Last time I heard anything about Ridge Racer, people were still poking fun at that Sony exec for saying “Ridddggee Raaacccuuurrr” at Sony’s e3 press conference a few years back. I wasn’t terribly interested in the game as I don’t care for racers on the consoles but Ridge Racer used to be in arcades as well. In fact the last time RR was in arcades was in 2001 with Ridge Racer V: Arcade Battle. Now we have word that Namco Bandai has trademarked the name Ridge Racer Accelerated in Japan. Link that up with a rumor I heard not long that Namco was working on a new racing title for arcades and you have to wonder, could Namco be planning on bringing RR back to coin-op land? It’s certainly possible, especially where it appears that companies won’t be letting up on developing new racing games anytime soon. What are your thoughts?

Microsoft Vs The Mods!

No This isn’t Paul Weller releasing his own console, but Microsoft has found itself embroiled in a lawsuit over its decision to ban some Xbox 360 owners from Xbox Live.

Texas law company Abingdon IP is searching for gamers to join a class-action suit against Microsoft. The problem has arisen since the computer giant decided to ban gamers from Xbox live who had modded their consoles to play pirated games. It is estimated that some 600,000 XBL accounts who cut dead.

The law firm, Abingdon IP claims that the ban is unlawful and that it believes Microsoft is obtaining information from consoles illegally.

They also claim that the timing of the ban is suspect, saying that Microsoft timed the ban “to avoid putting people off signing up for Xbox Live so they could play the recent Halo and Call of Duty blockbusters online”.

It says that if Microsoft had carried out the ban before these releases, sales of both games and Xbox Live subscriptions would have suffered.

The official word from Microsoft has been “All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live.”

If the law firm, who are actively seeking users who have had their accounts stopped, are successful it will be a landmark day for pirates everywhere!

Tekken It Back!

News arrives that Tekken 6 has gone gold (gone into production) on PSP, with a release date for Europe and UK for December 11th.

With all the features from the console versions Tekken 6 PSP adds ad-hoc wi-fi versus battling.

In addition to containing all 18 battle stages and 40 playable characters in the home console version of TEKKEN 6, the PSP game also supports ad-hoc multiplayer versus battles fought across four additional stages. Battle modes include Arcade, Story, Ghost, Challenge and Practice, while the ad-hoc wi-fi features include the ability to send and receive ghost data allowing fights against opponents’ characters even when not connected with them.

The Screen shots are looking great, we will have a review as soon as we can!

The producer of Tekken 6 told Playstation Europe that his team is planning the creation of additional DLC for this new fighting video game. What ever it is that they are planning, which sounds like it will be more than just a new outfit, it will be free.

When the Namco Bandai producer, Katsuhiro Harada, was asked if there are any plans for further downloadable content, and he responded in saying that there is a strong possibility that there will. If there is in fact one planned, he said that it would be free to the players as well.

This is pretty good news, because it makes it known that this is not just a quick patchup or fix. This seems to be truly added on content that you will be able to download for use. This is a good idea considering the issues the game had at first. Tekken 6 had online lag issues at first, that warranted the release of a patch to fix the networking issues. So I am pretty sure that they feel compelled to release any downloadable content that they would create for free, sort of in good faith as a response to their initial mess up.

The only issue I can see with making it free is that it would not be exclusive anymore. There are actually people out there that enjoy paying for their content, because it makes them stick out while playing online and it makes them exclusive in a way. Well, what ever the case is, if they do release new content for the game, it is good to know that we, the gamers, will be able to download it for free.

The King of Iron Fist Tournament returns with the latest installment, Tekken 6. The Tekken series ha

The King of Iron Fist Tournament returns with the latest installment, Tekken 6. The Tekken series has become a top contender in the fighting game industy, and this year has truly been a game for Fighting game fans with releases of major titles like Blazblue and Street Fighter IV. Does Tekken have what it takes to knockout the competition and go to the top?

Tekken 6 does not stray far from the formula that has kept the series going. The system uses four buttons to control the limbs of the characters, but its much simpler than it sounds. You use the buttons in combonation with directional pad inputs to create moves that can chain to combos, in true fighting game fashion. While not completly new, the gameplay has receieved refinements that change up gameplay styles. Added into is the Rage System that activates as a characters life dips to a low point. While not changing actually gameplay, it leads to quicker matchs and some tricky situations. Characters also now bounce much more when they hit the floor, which allows the other player to continue a combo after smacking a character down to the floor. This makes for some truly amazing combos. While characters themselves have seen moveset refinements and additions, the characters are mostly faithful to their previous counter-parts. The new characters are welcome additions to the tekken roster, adding even more variety to the mix. Characters like Bob and Lars add new and interesting fighting styles to the game.

While gameplay itself hasn’t changed much, the amount of different modes has increased. Added in is online multi-player that allows two players to battle it out in player matchs or ranked matchs with their customized characters or normal characters. While online is a great addition, it still has problems such as input lag that are present in both versions. Also added is a new campaign mode that is essentially the story mode of the game. The campagin mode revolves around the characters Lars and Alisa. The campagin is a throwback to previous tekken force modes, allowing players to play an arcade-style brawler campaign that uses moves for characters from the main game. While this sounds great, it lacks alot because it is repetative in gameplay and the control scheme is problamatic. While it is a nice addition, the reason to play the campaign mode is to gain more in-game money to customize your characters. Character customization is a feature from the previous tekken that has become even more defined in this installment, with more options of clothing for characters being made available for purchase as you progress through the campaign. The customization feature is vast and allows people to make very unique looking characters to use.

The style in Tekken 6 hasn’t changed much, with most character models staying relativly similar to their previous Tekken models. Tekken 6 keeps the intense, cinamatic vibe that previous installments had with detailed level structure and impressive effects. But, for Tekken fans what really matters is the gameplay, and as im sure you can tell at this point, the gameplay is good…very good. With the deepest combat out of the whole series and some of the most fun characters in the series, Tekken 6 truely stands out from the pack, and with the amount of fighting games this year it has alot of contenders. Tekken 6 is a must-buy for Tekken fans, and if your a fighting game fan or just slightly interested in Tekken, I think Tekken 6 may just suprise you.

The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces uses the Wii’s nunchuk as a flight stick to control intense arcade-style aerial combat. I’ve put in word with Namco Bandai’s North American publishing arm for information on North America and when I hear back I will update you.

For those who passed on the console version released earlier this month, or just bummed with the lag

For those who passed on the console version released earlier this month, or just bummed with the laggy online multiplayer, you just might find something different with the PSP version of the game. Namco Bandai has so far built a strong reputation with their PSP fighting game ports with Tekken: Dark Ressurection and more recently Soul Calibur:Broken Destiny. Providing exclusive content, improvement tweaks, and unbelievable graphics for the PSP, each port solidified itself as a legitmate and unique version of the original game. With Tekken 6, all 40 characters will be present from the console version, 4 new stages will be included, and we also see the return of the ability to transfer ghost data. With the recent announcement of adhocParty coming to North America, players will also be able to battle locally or online (via PS3) both via ad-hoc multiplayer. Tekken 6 for the PSP is slated for release Nov/24/2009; now the question for me is whether I can justify buy two versions of the same game. Tekken 6? Yes. Sean C.

Official release below:}

SANTA CLARA, Calif., (Nov. 18, 2009) — Fighting during the holidays has never been this fun as NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. announced today that TEKKEN®6 has gone gold for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system and will be available nationwide on Nov. 24, 2009. Just in time to help shake off the Thanksgiving tryptophan blues, TEKKEN 6 retains all the intensity of its console brethren while providing an extensive single player experience with challenging gameplay modes and robust features. The latest iteration in the TEKKEN series is ready to go. Are you?

With an illustrious 14 year legacy, TEKKEN 6 brings the blockbuster fighting franchise onto multiple platforms for the first time with uncompromising quality, a robust gameplay experience, and the largest roster ever seen in the series. Players can test their might in a variety of game modes such as Arcade, Story, Time Attack, Survival, and Gold Rush to collect in-game money, customization items and view character specific storylines. In addition to containing all 18 battle stages and 40 playable characters found in the home console version, TEKKEN 6 for the PSP system will also support ad-hoc multiplayer battles across an additional four stages. Furthermore, players will have the ability to transfer ghost data allowing fights against opponents’ characters even when not connected with them.

Is that just Tekken the piss?

..I will always be a Tekken nut. The game was never about winning for me. Just learning moves and combos… and competing against the next guy.. Showing off at tournaments.. Sweet.

I love the buzz of a great fight, regardless of winning or losing.

And so, here comes Tekken 6: A game that tests my fighting mantra greatly. I’ll get to that issue shortly.

It’s been a long wait for the sixth (technically eighth) instalment. Was it worth the wait? I’d say it was, definitely. But then, I’m a hardcore Tekken fan.

Tekken isn’t for everybody, but this latest edition is noticeably far more accessible to newcomers. There’s now a huge roster of 40 characters to choose from (why the animals keep returning, I’ll never know), and more modes and options to get stuck into.

The first new addition that comes to mind is Scenario Campaign mode, a kind of 3D-Streets of Rage (You don’t know Streets of Rage? Shame on you). At first, you’ll be cursing at the camera and controls here, but something about it is very addictive, and you soon forgive these minor issues. Especially as, over time, you realise you need to play this mode to earn many of the achievements in the game.

Speaking of achievements, characters are seriously customisable now. You can adorn your favourite fighters in all sorts of attire arrangements, with a crazy amount of hats, shoes, Asics tracksuits, etc. to choose from. I have to admit having great fun dressing Law up as my hero, Bruce Lee, but I won’t talk about that here.

The avatars themselves look real nice. The attention to detail with muscle definition and facial expression can’t be ignored and the characters pretty much fill up the entire screen, set in some gorgeous-looking Arenas.

The arenas themselves are great to look at, and are now (mostly) more interactive than those seen in Tekken 4, with fighters crashing through walls or floors into different areas in much the same way as in Dead or Alive. Not much more than a gimmick, but a nice gimmick all the same.

Anyway – enough praise.

The thing about recent instalments of ‘The King of Iron Fist Tournament’ that REALLY annoys me… Are those ‘wonderful’ Boss characters. The kind of character who is three times bigger than yourself, and has a move list that will render you immobile, and unable to fight back.

Jinpachi Mishima was ‘The Daddy’ in the last tournament. He was bad enough, freezing you with almost every move, and seemingly intangible, as your punches and kicks seem to just pass through his belly.

Enter ‘Azazel’ – a whole new ball game. Bring back Jinpachi.

You WILL shout at the TV. Also, Playstation 3 controllers are pricey, so I suggest you go easy on them. *Tip* they might be shaped like a boomerang but they sure as hell don’t come back!

To go back to my ‘Tekken Mantra’, I don’t fight to win, just for the fun of it. I don’t care if I lose, generally. Here’s a boss who cannot be beat unless you ‘play cheap’ – I won’t go into detail, but you’ll need to find a couple of moves, and/or combos, and keep using them, no matter what. My issue is that, even after 13-odd fights with Azazel, with his constant tail swipes, and sudden teleportations, I’d rather lose looking good, than win like that.

But methinks I take this too seriously! Whatever – you’ll see…

You’ll be thankful for ‘Ghost Mode’, which returns from Tekken 5, allowing you to fight renditions of real players around the globe – it’s basically the same as Arcade Mode, but without Azazel. Nice.

To fans of the storyline? Don’t hold your breath. Endings leave you feeling cheated now. Scenario Campaign mode is where all that stuff is, and then some.

There is also a slight issue with loading times; it is vital that you install the game before playing, to improve loading speeds, which, even after installation, are.. not as great as previous games in the series. Considering the huge amount of content in Tekken 6 itself, the loading is easily overlooked, with time.

Anyway, ignoring the last boss (and one bonus character), I love Tekken, as always. Once the online mode is smoothed out and updated (new Scenario co-op modes in the pipeline, etc.), it’ll be even better. This is definitely the best of the bunch, but again, I can’t help thinking that it would be so much better if they got rid of that damned bear, kangaroo, panda, and that fucking boss..

Howdy: * Motions are top notch.

* Soundtrack is really good

* Tons of unlockables and customization.

See Ya’: No Motion Plus

Not enough songs.

I’m a cheerleader.

Let me just say this up front. When I first put this game, We Cheer 2, in my Wii I was not expecting much. I’m a near 30 year old man standing in front of my TV waving digital pom poms. If that’s not a recipe for message board fodder, I don’t know what is. Let me also say this. Don’t judge a game by its title. We Cheer 2 is a lot of fun.

The premise of the game is simple. You follow on screen prompts with either one or two Wii Remotes acting as your pom poms. The better you perform those actions the more points you get. You’ll do a wide variety of motions from throwing your hands up or to the side, to making big wide circular motions and a lot of interesting stuff in between. There are two single player modes that you can pick from. The first is just a simple competition where you pick one of the game’s 30 licensed tracks and try to get as high a score as you can. The second is the games “story” mode. You’ve joined a cheerleading squad that is trying to win the championship. During the game’s brief story your captain goes down and you’re the only one that knows the moves and you have to lead the squad to victory.

The movement is controlled with either one remote in your hand or two. Namco Bandai made the right move in getting rid of the Nunchuk. Anyone that has tried to use it in rhythm games knows that the motion sensing of the Nunchuk just isn’t good enough to handle fast paced games like this. The addition of the second Wii Remote gives you the same weight in both hands and a better sensitivity to help nail the routine. The problem is that even the Wii Remote doesn’t recognize every gesture you do and now that Motion Plus is out it seems like a very curious omission. The gestures themselves vary quite nicely and mean the routines never really get old. You’re graded on each move you do with some form of feedback. If the move was labeled as “Cool” you performed it perfectly. You’ll also see indicators telling you if you were too fast or too slow. It really lets you know how you’re doing and you’re able to adjust during the song to help increase your score. Each song has some motion that will make it stand out from the others and there are a very large variety of motions that you’ll do. Each song will have one or more points where you’ll be asked to hit motions for bonus points and every motion you do perform will add a letter to some message at the bottom of the screen. When you’ve finished that section you’ll go into bonus mode where you shake the Wii Remotes as fast as you can to score a ton of bonus points. The more letters you have of the phrase, the longer your bonus time lasts. When you have friends over that want to play you can go into Multi-player mode and cheer together to see who has the best moves. The game supports up to four players each using one Wii Remote.

The soundtrack is what you’d expect if you were going to a high school cheerleading competition. It has the classics like Tubthumping or Get Ready For This. It also has a lot of newer stuff from many artists you’d see on the Disney Channel like Miley Cyrus, Ashley Tisdale and Demi Lavato. Overall the soundtrack fits perfectly with the game, and while it could have more songs the ones it does have are very nice to cheer to.

Each of the modes will award you with Cheer Points. These increase your experience after every competition and you go up in rank when you’ve reached a certain number of points. You start out as a trainee and the goal is to make it to captain. This serves to let you know just how well you’re doing and how long you’ve been playing. Cheer Points are used to purchase many of the game’s different unlockables, most of which come in the form of new outfits that you can use to customize your cheerleader. Everything is customizable from the pattern on the clothes, to the style of clothing you’re wearing. You can also customize the colors and the name of your squad so you can fulfill your dream of cheering for you dear old high school. My squad was decked out in uniforms that were near perfect matches for my old high school in Pampa, TX. You can play as either a boy or a girl and there are 200 different things that can be unlocked. As you perform better you’ll also open up new venues and new members will join the squad. You can customize the roster to your liking, but this seems to mainly be for looks as the cheerleaders seem to be all identical to each other.

The game is definitely one of those don’t judge a book by its cover moments. I went into the game not expecting much or to have fun and was completely surprised when I found myself playing more and more. The motions are all fresh and the game will give you a workout. I was sweating by the end of just a handful of songs. It fits the target audience of tween girls perfectly and I have no doubt that any young girls out there would love the game. The soundtrack is exactly what they would have on their iPod. It’s easy to dismiss a game like this, but you’d be wrong. Aside from the curious lack of Motion Plus support and a soundtrack that I would have liked to see expanded the game is fun and if you have daughters that like these rhythm games you’d have fun playing along with them.

Final Score: 3/5 Average

Review copy of the game provided by Namco Bandai.

Like most things in life, there are leaders and there are followers and the gaming industry is no ex

Like most things in life, there are leaders and there are followers and the gaming industry is no exception. There are games that try to push the genre forward (or aspects of the genre at least). Then there are games that lazily follow behind. It’s not that these game are horrible, far from it in fact. If this game came out years ago it would have probably gotten a great reception. Sadly MagnaCarta2 came out in 2009 and it just doesn’t measure up.

token spikey-haired warrior...(check)

First off Magna Carta 2 is actually the third installment. The first was a PC game in 2001, then came the 2005 Magna Carta: Tears of Blood For the PS2. The installment of the series follows a story set in the war-torn Lanzheim Continent and centers around a male character named Juto, who cannot remember his past (Like that’s never happened before… maybe his name should be Cloud and not Juto).

What anime game would be complete withough mech-like monsters to fight?

The game play mixes strategic turn-based and real-time elements and the player controls up to three party members. When you encounter an enemy the player has the option of switching from Movement Mode to Combat Mode and there is no loading screen when entering a fight (which is nice). During a fight, players can switch control of party members and customize AI for those the player is not controlling.

You usual flame throwing warrior...

As I said, years ago this game might have been refreshing because, as you may remember, both the Xbox and the 360 had a severe lack in RPGs especially Japanese RPGs. But since then we’ve had games like Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Fable 2; even Japanese RPG’s like Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata. Each brought something refreshing to the genre or the system. So now the bar has been raised pretty high and pretty graphics just don’t cut it anymore. Once you take that away it’s really hard for a game like Magna Carta 2 to compete.

Pros

The graphics and sound, while nothing to write home about, still live up to the standard one would expect for a “this” gen system. Other than that there isn’t much to write home about this game. Character designs are pretty anime-influenced so if you like that kinda thing this may get some extra points from you.

The battle system has the interesting element of having to chain through your characters during battle so that you don’t run out of stamina. This keeps the game from being a button masher and forces you to make use of everyone. Each character has two styles of attack. It’s a system that this game swagger jacked from Star Ocean (surprise). The weapons also have an enhancement system that works like…you guessed it, Materia (surprise again ). But hey, if your going to take ideas from games you might as well go with ideas that worked right?

Cons

Though the graphics are nice, can we get some original designs please?! This game is not a JRPG. It was created by a Korean game company. But everything about the visuals just screams mediocre fantasy based anime. The amnesia hero, the country swept up in war, the sassy princess, the spikey haired teammates, all of these just make the clichés too many to count.

Then there are the seemingly endless pages of text! As I said years ago this wouldn’t have mattered so much. However, pesky developers like Bioware and others who insist on recording all dialogue for a more immersive experience, make games with this massive amount of text in this game feel like crime against gaming!

Here’s the Deal

Here is the deal: As far as games go…this is a Frankenstein …or rather a Godzilla of JRPG clichés. It’s not a total horror flick but the fact that it’s so boringly mediocre makes it in fact worse than a REALLY bad game. RPG’s as a genre are constantly evolving. New systems of fighting, original stories, fresh and dimensional characters, games that don’t try to improve on what’s come before will no doubt fall by the way side. Magna Carta 2 recently released but because of lack of originality, it won’t be long before people will be saying Magna Carta who?

Now some of you might know Tales series from Namco, the last installment they had released is Tales of Vesperia on the Xbox360 (formerly an exclusive to the xbox360) and Playstation 3. Bandai Namco Games Japan has opened up a new teaser site for their new RPG Title Project K. There is currently no news on as to what it is, for what console it is or even if it is a Tales game or not. There have been, however, hints about the game presumably being an upcoming Tales game for the Nintendo Wii,DS or PS3.

When they had updated the Namdai news list about this update, it was originally filed under “Nintendo DS” with the DS icon. Either they accidentally posted it early, or they just made a mistake in posting. This has now been fixed though with a new icon, indicating that it is a home game.

Also, despite Namco Bandai’s many subsites for their games, only the Tales Channel has a link leading to Project K’s teaser site. Because of this, many are now speculating that this could be a new Tales game. There are also some who believe that it’s a Sergeant Keroro game. The teaser site will be updated seven days from now according to its countdown. We will just have to wait and see if this is really a new Tales series or not.

Namco Bandai is looking to release a Tekken 6 update that will eliminate the online lag, and improve the over all experience, which many reviews have been complaining about.

The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 online experience was widely ridiculed for the annoying abundance of lag, even seen in my own Tekken 6 Review. It does not have to do with your individual connection either, because many of the major reviews out there complained about the very same topic as well. This problem with online lag led to the disappointment of many of those who are fans of the fighting franchise. Namco Bandai is planning on releasing this downloadable update as soon as it has been properly tested and verified for working.

This update will be extremely enjoyed by many gamers. If you go online and read about some of the experiences that some are having while playing this game online, you will read tales of people abusing the lag to link combos that you will not be able to break out of. Not to mention the fact that the combos are hard enough to execute when you have a one or two second delay of the input from your controller. Then those who do manage to successfully get out their combos manage to link it into a juggling combo, which only causes further frustration within the players. So the release of an update to fix this online lag in Tekken 6 is a great thing. Namco Bandai is expected to reveal more information and a release date in the near future.
