Last night, I went to a council meeting at Kingston that ended up voting down some apparently minor amendments to the planning permit for the social housing development at 999 Nepean Highway, Moorabbin, behind Kingston Arts Centre.

I have the council papers with me, but they’re turgid as these sorts of documents tend to be. I won’t pretend to have more than a passing knowledge of what these amendments were about: something about the visibility of clothing on clotheslines (I wonder if social housing tenants are over-represented in purchases of G and T-strings?), a slight increase in parking spaces, and third-party rights and the council having right of veto, or recourse to VCAT, if the developer ever decides to sell any of the units.

Whatever – they were voted down. And a few of the arguments about the merits of the development were rehashed. Which is fair enough. Emotions have run high on both sides over several months. The gallery was populated by maybe a dozen people who were quite vocal in their opposition to the development, often interjecting and booing and cheering.

…But the show goes on

Afterwards I had to ask a council officer what the vote meant – did this mean the development would be canned? No, she said – it just meant the original permit now stands. The status quo was maintained.

I wandered over to councillors Peter Shewan (who voted for the amendment) and Ron Brownlees (against) . They were pretty approachable. Then I went off to introduce myself to Councillor Paul Peulich, who was chatting to some of the protesters.

Talk to the hand

I introduced myself, by my full name and identifying myself as the author of this blog. “I know,” he said, waving his hand dismissively and turning away from me. I tried again, and succeeded in asking him a few questions:

EL: Have you ever supported a social housing development while you’ve been on council? Are you totally against social housing, or do you think it has some place in tackling the housing crisis?

His answer was bland as milk: “Social housing needs to be investigated properly.” He added something about “the consequences”.

EL: So where do you stand on the housing crisis?

PP: “I’m very concerned about housing affordability”.

EL: So what are you doing about it?

PP: I’m on the [??] housing taskforce. [a council thing? I’m not sure].

EL: And what’s your solution to the housing crisis?

PP: You’ll have to wait till February. [Presumably when this taskforce reports back? I don’t know.]

And so he walked off into the bowels of Kingston Council, where I could not follow.

Idea-free zone

So, let me get this straight. Cr Paul Peulich has been very active on the housing issue, producing leaflets calling the Kingston social housing development “Vandalism”. Check them out – they’re still on his website.

Those leaflets helped generate a wave of opposition to the development, resulting in the signing of some 2500 petitions – Cr Peulich’s own estimate.

Yet when asked for his views by a short, bespectacled mum approaching early middle age and with a passing resemblance to Anna Mouskouri (that’d be me) – he appears to crumble.

And he becomes a total ideas-free zone.

(Just till February? You be the judge).

Then he asked me not to quote him on anything that he’d said.

Wha?

I told him in not so many words to dream on.

At that point, one of the protesters, a man with a passing resemblance to Stan Zemanek, interrupted and told me I should respect Cr Peulich’s desire not to be quoted.

Again I said no; that I’d identified myself by my full name and as the author of this blog, of which he was well aware (he’s on my email list along with other local pollies). And besides, I was a constituent talking to a politician at a council meeting. Hard to think of a more public setting.

(I later introduced myself to Peulich’s supporter, a guy called Stephen Hartney (not sure of the spelling) , who gave me a grilling. Do you own your own home? No. Do you live in social housing? No. Are you the Greens candidate? No. I don’t and never have belonged to any political party. Did you write a letter to the local paper? Bingo. Yep. And then, because I was hovering around him, a question along the lines of, so what do you want?. I said, I’m engaging in debate with a fellow citizen.

“Well I respect your views,” he said, words to that effect. “And I hope you respect mine.”

I replied, “I respect your right to express your views. There’s a difference.”

Anyway, getting back to Paul Peulich.

There are few things I respect more than a politician who will defend his or her principles and argue their case despite rotten tomatoes and eggs being hurled at them.

On the other hand, there are few things I respect less than politicians who are comfortable expressing what they really think only in the company of like-minded souls among whom they feel cosseted. Who can’t be bothered defending the principles they presumably want to be elected on.

True Believers

When Kevin Rudd was elected prime minister, he implicitly rebuked Paul Keating over his 1993 “true believers” victory speech. Rudd said he was there to represent all Australians.

Paul Peulich could learn something from this.

I more than get the fact that Paul Peulich and I are on opposing sides when it comes to this issue. But when a politician refuses point blank to engage in discussion with a constituent who’s being relatively civil …well, frankly, that’s just laziness. Or contempt. Or both.

Years ago, when Paul Peulich was probably still listening to New Kids on the Block, I worked as an electorate officer for a politician who voted for the GST. It was our duty to field many, many angry callers over a couple of months. Some days we got very little work done because the phones ran hot, and it was very draining to be on the receiving end of so much anger.

But we were expected to be calm and patient and state the pro-GST case. It was only when someone stepped over the line – that is, swearing or name-calling, that all bets were off and we were allowed to hang up. We owed the constituents a hearing. This was regardless of where we stood on the issue – any many of us staffers personally opposed the tax.

Hearing differences

This is why I came away from a meeting last month with the new Glen Eira councillor, Oscar Lobo, with a good deal of respect.

Cr Lobo and I may not see eye to eye on the nearby social housing development at 973 Nepean Highway (this will be the subject of a forthcoming post). However, it was Cr Lobo who actually asked to meet up with me after I sent all councillors at Glen Eira and Kingston an email when I began this blog in October, asking for their views on social housing.

I got one hour with Cr Lobo ranging widely over all sorts of issues at a very busy period for him, when he was being swamped with well-wishers and constituent inquiries. Now I don’t expect politicians, local or otherwise, to go to these lengths. And I expect Cr Lobo may by necessity soon become more frugal with his time. But it was a great start, and it told me he’s serious about engaging with his electorate.

So when a politician like Paul Peulich decides that the issues I raise, the questions I ask, are not worth responding to because I happen to hold opposing views … I get annoyed.

Estudiando la lírica griega antigua en clase hacíamos mención a la importancia de la música que acompañaba a las composiciones poéticas. También comentábamos que los temas de la poesía lírica griega están sacados de la vida misma.

Una de las composiciones líricas populares era el canto de boda, que se conoce con el nombre de Epitalamio. Un coro entonaba estos cantos de tema diverso (deseos de felicidad para los novios, celebración de la belleza de la pareja, etc.). La poetisa Safo de Lesbos cultivó este género. Recordé, después de la clase, una película bélica que se desarrolla en una isla griega del Mar Egeo, recordé la escena de boda y, en ella, una hermosa canción con partes solistas y con partes corales. La película es “Los cañones de Navarone” y la pieza musical una canción griega popular conocida como “Γιαλό, Γιαλό”  (3) que, según la información que he podido leer,  es una canción de enamorados y un himno al Mar Mediterráneo.

Sabe aquelas musicas que parecem ter um brilho todo especial, que mesmo regravadas trocentas vezes nao perdem em nada todo o seu encanto, quando nao enaltecem todo o seu brilho? Ou aquelas que sempre tem uma mensagem promissora que ate com o passar do tempo rejuvenesce na voz de novos talentos? Pra começar que tal uma bem antiga que faz parte do Cantor Cristao e se tornou  um ícone mundial: Amazing Grace!

A historia da canção é bem curiosa: Amazing Grace (Sublime Graça) foi escrita por John Newton, um ex-oficial da Marinha Inglesa, que trabalhava como traficante de escravos. Certa vez, em uma das viagens o navio de John foi atingido por forte tempestade e teve que conduzir a embarcação só, pois o marinheiro que o fazia fora lançado ao mar. Sobre esse episodio, ele disse que durante a tempestade percebeu quão era sua fragilidade e quão desamparado estava, e se não fosse a Maravilhosa Graça de Deus não teria sobrevivido ao fato.

Aos poucos, Newton foi percebendo a fragilidade da natureza humana, então torno-se cristão e abandonou o trafico de escravos, o que culminou com a composição de Amazing Grace.

A canção é sem dúvida uma das mais famosas e mais conhecidas canções mundiais, principalmente nos Estados Unidos, onde a canção se foi adotada como símbolo da nação americana. Sua letra nos fala da graça de Deus, maior presente que Deus nos deu, como forma de perdão e amor.

Algunos datos de NANA MOUSKOURI:

• Inició su carrera a temprana edad y se estableció con su familia en Atenas, donde su padre trabajaba como proyeccionista de cine, ahí comenzó el amor de Nana por el arte, especialmente la música.

• Al comenzar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Nana continuó con sus estudios, gracias al apoyo de su profesor de música y permaneció en el conservatorio hasta 1950.

• Luego cantó en pequeños clubes nocturnos, donde Harry Belafonte la daría a conocer posteriormente.

• Al percatarse de estas ‘escapadas’ de Nana a los clubes de jazz la echó del conservatorio, y como ella menciona: Mi maestro me dijo: jazz o clásica, y yo opté por la música.

• Perteneció como vocalista al grupo “los Atenienses”, donde conoció a su marido George Petsilas, del cual se separó después. Años más tarde se casó con André Chapelle, quien era y sigue siendo su productor.

• Desde 1959 en adelante, se inician los triunfos para Nana, gracias a sus experiencias con diversos géneros musicales (Pop, Jazz, Folclórica, Clásica, Gospel, etc.)

• Ganó dos premios de la canción griega. Su primer triunfo internacional fue en 1960, en el Festival Internacional del Mediterráno en Barcelona. También fue premiada su canción Nunca en Domingo. Un año después, le siguió el León de Oro de Berlín, por la música del documental Grecia, Tierra de Sueños.

• En ese mismo año gana su primer disco de oro por la canción Weisse Rosen aus Athen (La Rosa blanca de Atenas). En 1963 representó a Luxemburgo en el Festival de la Canción de Eurovisión con “À force de prier” quedando en 8ª posición.

• Desde entonces, Nana se convirtió en una celebridad mundial, en donde a cada concierto que suele presentarse, se agotaban las entradas, Ganó también otros premios y grabó alrededor de 300 álbumes, que en los años 1980 y 1990 consolidaron aún más su carrera musical. Su más destacada característica es que ha grabado innumerables canciones en griego, inglés, francés, español, latín, alemán, hebreo, japonés, entre otros.

• Admirada tanto por personas ricas y de la realeza europea, como por las personas comunes, sus cualidades son la inteligencia y la hermosura, además de una angelical voz producto de una anomalía en sus cuerdas vocales y de una gran preparación.

• Posteriormente, incursionó en la política, reprobando la dictadura militar griega y apoyando la democracia hasta su restitución en 1974. Su amor por los niños la llevó a ser embajadora de la UNICEF en 1993 y luego a representar a Grecia en el Parlamento Europeo en 1994.

• Para cerrar con broche de oro esta excelsa carrera y despedirse de sus fans, Nana planeó una Gira de despedida (Farewell World Tour) por todo el mundo, que comenzó en el 2005 y terminó el 24 de julio del 2008 en el Teatro de Herod Atticus en Atenas.

• En toda su carrera ha vendido más de 350 millones de discos en todo el mundo, siendo una de las solistas más exitosas.

Je souffre d’épuisement de la testostérone!  Ça se peut-tu?  ben je viens de l’inventer…

Ben finalement, pour revenir à avant hier, j’ai indiqué au gars à p’tit-bedon que je ne savais pas ce que je voulais et que je voulais prendre mon temps… Je crois qu’il n’a pas torp aimé ça.  L’autre à la voix de Nana Mouskouri qui avait un souper, mon mécanicien pas de nouvelle.  ben je suis sorti et on repart le bal.  Ce fut une soirée ok, mais sans plus.  J’ai revu mon bel Italien, Nous étions sur la terrasse du bar S. là je me suis trouvé drôle parce que nous avons découvert que nous étions 2 tops…. Ben évidemment que mon Bel Italien, me dit “Cé qué tu n’a pas rencontré le bon et que tu vas woir, si je m’occupe de toi et bla bla bla….”  Je le trouve dôle, par ce que c’est le réflexe des tops de toujorus évangéliser pour leur paroisse.  Et tiens, je décide de lui servir le même pas froid, alors je me mets à lui reservir la recette, mais cette fois-ci à vois haute…” Tu sais c’est que si tu avais rencontré le bon tu te laissserais faire et que si je te travaille le…. pendant 1 heure tu ne pourrais résister à rejoindre le paradis promis…”  Je vous dis pas la tête des gens autour qui évidemment riaient, mais plus encore de voir la tête de mon bel Italien complètement estomacqué….  Bon je suis parti me promonner parce que c’est un jeu avec lui, quand il sera prêt on verra….

Je continue mon périple, tiens il ne me reste plus de cigarette, je vais en acheter. Puis, puisque je suis près du Bar A, je fais un saut… Ah mon beau p’tit barman Trash… pas celui qui m’a fait bavé (histoire trop longue à raconter ici), Il me voit, je le vois, nous nous voyons…. Je lui dit Salut monsieur S. il dit c’est quoi ton nom, je lui dit pas important et il insiste, je lui dit et il me regarde dans les yeux, je vous dit pas y’Avait des flammes c’est certain…. Il me donne la bière et il grondre, wooooofff. Je continue dans le bar et je vois un de mes ex, monsieur B, parce qu’il est blond, vous savez les blonds pâles surfeur boy… Ah le p’tit maudit que j’ai eu du plaisir avec lui, il était gâté par la vie si vous voyez ce que je veux dire… Je lui fait le bonjour et il cruse le barman, mon barman… lol… il me dit en tout cas le barman me trouve bien de son goût… Je lui répond non merci pour les barmans, j’ai déjà donné pour la cause… Pendant ce temps le barman sous mes yeux s’en va à la toilette, je le suis (heille les vilaines pensées, quand-même!, je vous arrête, il ne s’est rien passé, je suis une vilaine qui a de la classe…) Je suis près de l’entrée des toilettes et je lui dit “heille le ti cliss !” en lui prenant le t-shirt par le cou, et je réalise qu’il a un harnais de cuir sous le tee-shirt.. “Woooofffff !” que je lui fais, et le laisse dans son intimité…

Je continue et je vais relancer mon DJ, lui yé hot, une vraie bête, un animal, je passe près du DJ boot et le regarde comme un animal en cage, je fais cela à toutes les fois et il en fait autant il arrête et me regarde, un regard qui en dit long… puis c’est fini je repars, comme un teaser… j’aime ça! lol et je le refais à toutes les fois…. On aime ça on dirait….

Bref, je repars, bon y’en a d’autres mais rien d’inspirant.  J’arrives au bar S. et je me promène, je vois un beau barbu blond il est jeune, et grand et sexy… je continue, puis pendant la soirée je monte au 2ième et la j’arrive en haut de l’escalier et c’est lui face à face… On se regarde droit dans les yeux et ailleurs, on ne s’est pas senti, mais bon… Je lui demande son âge et il rit, on se tâte, rien de porno je vous l’assure…. Bref il a le même âge que moi.  Je nous contemplais en me disant, mon dieu, que pour les hétéros cela doit être difficle à comprendre, c’est comme si un gars voit une fille, la regarde dans les yeux et il l’embrasse… pas trop de préliminaires, on se rencontre et si on est intéressé on y va….. Bref, je redescens et et il me suis, la rencontre de base est faite.  Je continue, et il passe à côté de moi… Il s’arrête et me prend para la taille nous écoutons la musique ensemble que c’est romantique… puis il me dit à l’oreille, le gars à côté de lui c’est son chum…. Oups, une scratch sur le vinyle… Il est clair qu’il a envie avec son chum de ‘amuser… Il me le présente… puis le bonjour… puis oups je me pousse, bonne soirée les boys. Ce n’est pas qu’ils n’étaient pas sexys, mais les trios, je ne suis pas friant, en tout cas pas ce soir là.

La soirée continue, je remonte en haut, j’vous jure j’vous dis pas comment je peux marcher pendant une soirée, mais c’est certain que je me rend à québec tous les week-end.  En haut et je vais au fond de la piste de danse. Un beau brand barbu sauvage me voit et je le vois. Il s’installe derrière moi. je le sens à côté je danse, le dJ en haut est très bon, la musique est vraiment bonne, je comprend pas qu’il n’y est pas plus de monde.  Bref il fait chaud et j’enlève mon t-Shirt, vous comprennez la danse, la musique, j’ai besoin d’avoir de l’air.  Surprise, il en fait autant.. je le regarde discrètement et il en fait autant.  Bon après, 10 minutes j’ai mon voyage, il danse et c’est tout, pis moi faire les premiers pas, pas trop mon genre… Je pars en bas et je me promène, autour de la piste de danse, la terrasse etc… pis je retourne en dedans et dans un coin je le vois.  Là je lui jette un regard mortel, je me flanque littéralement devant lui et le regarde dans les yeux… Wow que je suis fier (faut dire qu’il est grand, virile et intimidant!) et je repars sans rien dire… ben là s’il comprend pas, c’est qu’il est con ou que je ne l’intéresse pas ou qu’il ne sait pas comment réagir et d’après moi c’est l’option 3…

Je m’en vais danser et il passe près de moi et là je lui demande son nom, il se présente, j’ai pas bien compris son nom, mais boof est-ce si important?  Et la, je vous dit pas oufff… on a dansé en se plottant au ralenti, vous savez quand le beat c’est toi qui le fais et que le rythme devient lent et je vous l’assure…. même le hit de Madonna celebration ne nous a pas arrêtés, lol.. Et oui j’ai passé la nuit chez lui et rentré ce matin à 1oh00.

je lui ai redemandé son nom et me répond monsieur B. et je lui dit que ce n’est pas son nom… (en fait je ne savais pas s’il était arabe, libanais, turc, grec… vous savez les mecs avec les yeux presque noirs et poilus à la virile sur l’estomac…) Il me dit son vrai nom et ce n’est pas un nom du Sageunay… lol  c’est ce matin en enfilant mes bottes que j’ai vue dans son loft des trucs de décoration libanaise, alors je présume qu’il est un beau libannais. Il vient de  terminer une relation de 4 ans avec son copainl le 11 septembre.  Je crois qu’il doit régler ça et je lui dit qu’il devrait le rappeler, ça se voit qu’il est dérangé par ça… dommage c’est pas rien 4 ans….Il me dit que non c’est vraiement terminé. J’suis certain que dans une semaine ils seront de retour ensemble. Ce ne sera pas mon prince charmant….

Je repars et j’ai faim… je vais manger de la marde de clown…  “Macdonald”  (J’ajoute ce mot c’est bon pour le ranking de ce site, un keyword qui drive du tourisme à mon blogue… En attendant que je puisse vivre de ce blogue… La vilaine Charrue) et je vais faire une sieste parce que je suis épuisé de la testostérone.

Bonne journée et je ne désespère pas! je vais le trouver mon prince, tiens je devrais repenser à mon board….

I’ve been unable to get this old West Indian song, from the 1960 album The Many Voices of Miriam Makeba, out of my mind. Makeba recalls an exchange of admiring glances in a marketplace which result in a kiss. The simple assertion that love tastes like strawberries is sweet, but this seems like a fleeting, doomed affair.

The lyrics start off a little trippy.

Somebody I’ll do a posting about lyrics which are trippy which were written before people started tripping. And I know someone’s going to say that LSD was invented in the 1930s, but it wasn’t mainstream until much later. In general, this recording doesn’t sound 50 years old to me. It sounds like stuff Makeba recorded in the late 70s. So it sounds 30 years old to me. What’s wrong with me? I’m having more and more of a problem enjoying “the contemporary.” Someone in my comments a while ago called this a conceit. They called me a poseur! Anonymously! Well, whatever. I ams what I ams and that’s all that I ams, a la Popeye.
