Sometimes I’m in the mood for a great kung-fu/action flick and Ninja Assassin fit the bill perfectly. It even had a halfway decent plot and characters I got into. It’s about a young orphan who is adopted by a Ninja master, given the name Raizo and is made to devote his life to becoming a cold, silent killer. After years brutality, Raizo has enough and turns his back on his ‘father’, and makes his way out into the world, taking revenge on his fellow ‘brothers’ for their crimes. Raizo teams up with a Europol investigator when she becomes a target of his former clan for digging a little too deep into the shadowy Ninja world.

If you’re looking for reality, this is not your film. It’s fun, and full of bloody battles, reminiscent of one of my husband’s old video games, from the unhuman amounts of blood to the sound effects. Rain, who plays Raizo does an amazing job as the lone-wolf Ninja. His physical abilities were impressive. I even liked Naomie Harris’ character, Mika – she did a great job on the acting – never over the top. Other supporting cast includes Rick Yoon as Raizo’s ‘brother’ and nemesis and Ben Mile’s as Mika’s boss. Director James McTeigue also did V for Vendetta.

If you liked Kill Bill, I think you’ll dig this one.

4 out of 5

Add’l Info: Released: Nov 25, 2009 • Runtime: 99 mins • Rated R for strong bloody stylized violence throughout, and language • Photo courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures’, Legendary Pictures’ and Dark Castle Entertainment – Photo by Juliana Malucelli via allmoviephotos.net

Oh joy! In less than a month, the Masterpiece Classic season begins on PBS offering another incredible lineup of quality period and contemporary drama’s. This is my favorite time of year for television and this season certainly aims to please offering some old classics and new surprises.

Masterpiece is branching out a bit this year in scope. Not only will we enjoy new adaptations of classic bonnet drama’s set in Regency and Victorian times, we will be offered more contemporary fare from the twentieth century. I am intrigued by the diversity of stories chosen and the top notch casting. Which new productions this season am I looking forward to with rapt anticipation? Well, of course as a Jane Austen enthusiast I am excited about the new adaptation Emma, but also a return to the delightful Victorian village of Cranford, and a certain dashing and adventurous British army officer in a red coat, Richard Sharpe. La!

I look forward to many Sunday evenings curled up in front of the tellie with a glass of wine and giddy expectation of some excellent entertainment. Here is a preview of the winter-spring season. Actress Laura Linney hosts the broadcasts, airing Sundays, 9:00 p.m. ET on PBS.

Cranford (Encore Presentation) – December 20, 2009-January 3, 2010

Adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell’s popular novel set in a small English village in 1842 on the brink of change — where some find romance and opportunity, and others fear the breakdown of social order. Cranford stars Dame Judi Dench (Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice 2005), Simon Woods (Charles Bingley Pride and Prejudice 2005) and Julia McKenzie (Miss Marple). Three episodes (Episode one 120 minutes; episode two 60 minutes; episode three 120 minutes)

Return to Cranford – January 10 – 17, 2010

Dame Judi Dench returns in the highly anticipated sequel to the Emmy-nominated Cranford miniseries, featuring Imelda Staunton (Charlotte Palmer in Sense and Sensibility 1995), Tom Hiddleston (John Plumptre in Miss Austen Regrets) in the acclaimed story of everyday life in a small Cheshire market town. (Two 90-minute episodes)

Emma – January 24 – February 14, 2010

A lavish new four-hour adaptation of one of Jane Austen’s most popular novels stars Romola Garai (Atonement) as the “handsome, clever and rich” but misguided heroine of Highbury Miss Emma Woodhouse. The cast includes Sir Michael Gambon as valetudinarian Mr. Woodhouse and Jonny Lee Miller (Edmund Bertam in Mansfield Park 1999) as her reproachful neighbor Mr. Knightley. Any Janeite worth her syllabub will be glued to the screen for this one. Three episodes (Episode one 120 minutes; episodes two and three 60 minutes)

Northanger Abbey (Encore Presentation) – February 14, 2010

In Jane Austen’s Gothic parody adapted by renowned screenwriter Andrew Davies, naïve and impressionable Catherine Morland (Felicity Jones) travels to Bath at the end of the eighteenth century in hopes of befalling a romantic adventure like the heroines in the Gothic romances that she is so fascinated with. There she meets the witty and charming Henry Tilney (JJ Feild) who invites her to his family estate of Northanger Abbey, a creepy medieval house where her vivid imagination and lurid fantasies multiply jeopardizing her budding relationship with her new suitor and his family. One 90-minute episode.

Persuasion (Encore Presentation) – February 21, 2010

In this adaptation of Jane Austen’s last and most poignant novel, heroine Ann Elliot (Sally Hawkins) is a young woman of seven and twenty years destined for spinsterhood after refusing a proposal by a young naval officer Frederick Wentworth (Rupert Penry-Jones) eight years prior. When her spurned suitor reappears as a successful and wealthy Captain looking for a wife, Ann is certain that her opportunity for love and happiness has passed her by. A moving story that reflects upon lost opportunities and renewed hope. One 90-minute episode.

The 39 Steps – February 28, 2010

Filled with romance and humor, this adaptation of the popular John Buchan adventure novel, set on the eve of World War I, stars Rupert Penry-Jones (Captain Wentworth in Persuasion 2007) as Richard Hannay, a mining engineer caught up in a conspiracy following the death of a British spy found in his apartment. One 90-minute episode.

Sharpe – March 28 and April 04, 2010

Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings) has made a career out of his multiple appearances as the dashing British army officer Richard Sharpe, a rough diamond who has risen through the ranks of the army on the back of his brave exploits. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, Sharpe is based on the popular novels of Bernard Cornwall. In the first episode, Sharpe’s Challenge, dispatches from India warn that a local maharaja is threatening British interests. Sharpe is sent on what turns out to be his most dangerous mission to date and in Sharpe’s Peril, he is traveling across India in 1818, escorting the beautiful Marie-Angelique Bonnet to meet her fiancé. Little does our hero know that he will inadvertently stumble across a massive opium trafficking ring. Two 120-minute episode.

The Diary of Anne Frank – April 11, 2010

This new, authentic adaptation of Anne Frank’s feisty, poignant and timeless account of her life in a cramped hidden annex during World War II features a remarkable performance by newcomer Ellie Kendrick (An Education), who brings to life the eloquent reflections of a teenage girl trying to live an ordinary life in extraordinary circumstances. One 120-minute episode.

Small Island – April 18 – 25, 2010

Adapted from the award-winning 2004 novel, this miniseries stars Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean, White Teeth) as Hortense, an ambitious young Jamaican woman thrust into the grit of 1940s post-war London. Two 90-minute episodes.

Be sure to check out the Masterpiece website for additional information on casting, story synopsis and programs streaming free online, the day after broadcast.

And I’ll tell you why, it was a good, robust, action flick, complete with “hot” eye candy characters, killer effects & fight choreography with complimentary breath-taking camera angles. It even had humor thrown in there… All was complete when a Europol agent has Raizo on lockdown then comments, “He doesn’t look like a killing machine to me. He looks more like he should be in a boy band…”

Of course Raizo’s reaction to this plus the knowledge that the actor is in fact a pop icon in his own right was an intellectual Schwing! I can appreciate it. Not to mention Rain’s (Raizo) super silky voice (noted whenever he’s speaking to Mikka – hmmm) goes along way to define his character as a no holds barred killer who a random woman puts her trust in. (Not like she really had any other choice though).

I definitely will be watching it again, likely twice more. What can I say, I liked the blade wielding, flips & kicks, punches, blood-letting, sarcastic manner of the characters and tone of the film. For the people out there that said the plot was “paper-thin”- hheeeelllllloooooo, is anybody home? You don’t see this type of flick for plot or storyline, I’m happy it actually had one that actually makes sense (not like that whole X-Men fiasco) at the time. If you want to see a plot go see “The Blind Side” or “Precious”.

If you want a movie that makes you involuntarily emanate sounds of awe, then see this one. I did a video review, see below. As always, naysayers welcome!

Theatrical Poster Ninja Assassin is a 2009 action-slasher movie written my J. Michael Straczynski an

Theatrical Poster

Ninja Assassin is a 2009 action-slasher movie written my J. Michael Straczynski and produced by the Wachowski Brothers.

Cast: Rain (Raizo), Naomie Harris (Mika Coretti), Rick Yune (Takeshi), Sho Kosugi (Lord Ozunu), and Ben Miles (Ryan Maslow).

Ninja Assassin is about a secret ninja clan called the Ozunu clan, who raises orphans to be the world’s greatest assassins. However, afte the execution of his best friend, Raizo betrays the clan and is on the run from the ninjas bent on capturing him. Mika Coretti is a Europol agent, who manages to link a money trail to the Ozunu clan. Now, she’s the next target of the Ozunu ninjas, and is saved by Raizo. Now, it’s pretty much a game of cat-and-mouse between the team of Raizo and Mika and the Ozunu ninjas.

The public who have watched this movie have given it about a B+, while it received overwhelmingly bad reviews from critics. It is rumored that the only good review that the film has gotten from mainstream critic is from Chris Nashawaty from Entertainment Weekly. Nashawaty describes the movie like such: “…this slick slice of martial arts mayhem from the producers of The Matrix is awash in blood. It spurts and sprays in geysers, and it never lets up. There’s a brutal (and admittedly very cool) fight scene every five minutes. But let’s be honest; killing is the film’s business…and business is good.”

Alright; I’m going to be honest. The only reason I went to see this movie was because I’m pretty much in love with Rain, the film’s lead, and I wanted to see that beautiful body of his. (In that aspect, this film gave me everything I wanted and more.)

I’ve read a lot of fan reviews; some hated it, some loved it. A lot of fans were expecting a lot more than this film was capable of. It was not written to be an A-list, Oscar-nominated movie; it was just for entertainment. A lot of fans were surprised at how gory the movie was, saying that it’s not a movie for children. HELLO! This is an R-rated flick–you’re probably not going to take young children to see it anyway!

Overall, the film isn’t as bad as critics make it out to be. Yes, the plot is pretty weak (you can tell that it was a script that was written in little over two days), and the gore is way to computerized, too much is going on, and the deaths are unbelievable, but it’s still entertaining. If you’re going for a good time, you’ll get it. If you’re going for action, you’ll get it. If your going for sexy guys, you’ll get it. I’d most definitely give it a watch.

Overall Rating:

3/5

Reason for Rating:

Good acting, amazing fight scenes, and pretty daddgum entertaining. However, the plot could use work, the deaths and the blood could be a little more convincing, and some aspects could be edited out or elaborated on. Overall, not bad.

Ok folks. I saw the film opening day, and I was kind of disapointed that the theater I went to pushed it to a tiny side theater. Oh’s well’s. Here goes.

When you see a Wachowski brothers movie you have to expect the unexpected. They pull out all the stops visually and sometimes things don’t make the most sense the first time around. Unless you’re REALLY paying attention – and believe when Rain’s on screen, I’m paying attention! First of all, this film did not let Rain stretch his acting muscles – just his physical ones. (Which, as a squeeling fan-girl I appreciated very much.) His English is much improved over older clips and songs, I know he’s working hard and that over time his abilities will increase 10 fold. That said, what did I think of the movie? Man, what a bloody, bloody splash fest of a film THAT was! Dear me. I was prepared slightly by the local newspaper reviewer. (“Ninja Assassin sets a new standard for film gore.”) So, I knew it was going to be bad, but not bad enough to make this non-squeemish girl cringe and try VERY hard not to look away. I will say this, if you can make it through the opening scene, things get better and if I may say so – a bit more stylized and less, um, blech-y. Naomie Harris was very good in her role and I liked her. She was a good strong character who wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty, but knew better than to just jump into the middle of a fight thinking she could help (most of the time.) I was disapointed by how little dialogue that Rain had. Did the directors think he couldn’t handle it, or was it part of his ninja character that he had to stay mysteriously quiet? I’m not entirely sure. I do know that I probably got a few dirty/quizical looks or questioning thoughts during one scene where a random henchman-like character says: **SPOILER ALER** “He doesn’t look like a killing machine to me, He looks like he belongs in a boy band.” OH MAN. That almost had me on the floor rolling with laughter. I had to cover my mouth and take deep breaths to calm down. In the heavier fight scenes Rain wowed and proved that his 8am-5pm everyday for 9 months training paid off – in a big way. I only spotted a few scenes that were obviously his stunt double. Other wise the man whooshed his way through the choreography. I remember thinking 3/4 of the way through the movie “Poor Rick Yune!” Poor man has only one scene in which you can actual see his face, not very good for an actor that already has very few apperances in films. I find it funny that for most of the articles about this film he was billed before Rain. Kind of ironic if you ask me. In all, this film really was all about the action, and it’s nearly non-stop. I think critics are generally full of crap and they get movies wrong. Most of them are looking for films to be artsy, realistic and have deep meanings. In general, the public like movies that are entertaining and show them something they don’t see in daily life or have never seen before and in this sense, Ninja Assassin delivers. I want to warn anyone who is slighly squeemish or can’t handle violence against seeing this movie. Wait for the DVD and fast forward through the tough stuff and you’ll get to at least see Rain for a few minutes! My final rating: 6.5/7 out of 10.

I’ve had a pretty steady “love-love” relationship with the filmmakers, Larry and A

I’ve had a pretty steady “love-love” relationship with the filmmakers, Larry and Andy Wachowski. Their first major stab at writing/directing, BOUND, was a magnificent thriller/noir movie that just happened to feature women as both the anti-hero(ine) and the femme fatale. With a great performance from both women (Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly, respectively), and the main villain of the piece, Caesar (played by the irascible Joe Pantoliono, who I have followed and loved through his career, in the similar role of the pimp in RISKY BUSINESS, to the sidekick of Tommy Lee Jones’ Federal Marshall in the THE FUGITIVE movies, and finally to his appearance in the Wachowski’s THE MATRIX.), the movie is stylish, sleek and most of all gave us the introduction to these movie-makers that I don’t know if their previous screen-writing venture did, in ASSASSINS.

Of course, then THE MATRIX, and it’s sequels, came along and changed everything. It changed the state of science fiction movies, the way action was done – either earnestly or as satire, and most of all these two men, sparked another filmic universe; that has really been equalled in my eyes by Peter Jackson, Quentin Tarantino and Alfred Hitchcock. (I’m sure there’s more, but those are the main ones I could think of.) You can tell a movie made by the Wachowski Brothers, from the way certain things are shot, from dialogue (in the Wachowski’s case, there always tends to be the quasi-zen, bullshit philosophy), and a repeating of certain actors. Whether it’s Pantoliono, Hugo Weaving (MATRIX and V FOR VENDETTA), Randall Duk Kim (MATRIX SEQUELS) and now the Korean pop star Rain, who was featured in SPEED RACER and now is the lead in the Wachowski Brothers’ produced, James McTeigue directed (same setup as V FOR VENDETTA, only the Wachowski’s didn’t write this screenplay) NINJA ASSASSIN.

It’s necessary to mention the V FOR VENDETTA setup, because this gives us our second – or third if you count the apparent refilming of the Nicole Kidman movie THE INVASION, which is a remake of the tried and true idea of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS – look at the directing chops of McTeigue. V FOR VENDETTA also stands out as the Wachowski’s foray into literal adaptation – as their no arguing that their previous movie were “inspired by” other’s works before, V FOR VENDETTA was based off the great graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. The action moved away from the patented Wachowski-inspired look of bullet time, and instead gave us blade lines. A tradition stooped in comic book art, but something that took what had become played out, and added another level to it. V FOR VENDETTA has become my favorite movie of these filmmakers; despite it’s going astray of the comic book’s intentions; and being more vital than their own work in THE MATRIX universe. (It might be said that the sequels lessened the impact or tainted the work of the original, but I just think that VENDETTA is more about trying to create a new world, and THE MATRIX is more about destroying an old one. And there is a fine line, and possibly a non-sensical viewpoint in that opinion.)

Written from an original story by Matthew Sand, and then gone over again by screen-comic book-television writer J. Michael Straczynski, NINJA ASSASSIN sadly lacks some of the finer points that we’ve gotten in the past from the creative minds behind this movie (and oddly, that even includes Strazcynski’s previous Oscar contender, CHANGELING). There’s certainly the action, the stylized violence – that most closely resembles V FOR VENDETTA – and there’s a little of the dialogue that I’ve come to expect (something about how a tattoo reveals not who the man is, but what kind of man he is…Not completely sure), but the storytelling is off. Even without it being a movie with the creative pedigree it has, there’s a fine action movie here, but there’s just something in the incorporation of the woman government agent out of her depth, the needless training montage of our hero in his apartment alone flinging around throwing stars and blades on chains, and even some of the hackneyed plot devices, that makes the movie less than the sum of it’s parts.

The movie only really works in it’s basest form. The action, and fight scenes between good ninja and bad ninja, ninja against military forces, and the numerous training flashbacks showing us this secret clan that kidnaps children turning them into deadly assassins. The opening five minutes of the movie really are kind of the peak of the piece. The top of a man’s head is chopped off, leaving us to see his lower jaw and tongue flopping, before he falls down dead and a flurry of super-speed throwing stars come through and eviscerate an entire gang of incessant, wannabe gangsters. I thought that this was a setup for a movie that would continue to raise the stakes, and take us even further into the world of, well, ninja assassins. Instead we cut from that to two government agents talking about ninjas; played by the ever watchable – both for talent and for looks – Naomie Harris (who you might not recognize from the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies and Michael Mann’s MIAMI VICE retread) and Ben Miles, who was the television secretary for the government, Dascomb, in V FOR VENDETTA. From there we cut to a scene of Raizo (Rain), doing laundry and a vague fight, that we only see a few moments of and then the vague outcome. Then it’s back to the Europol agents, talking. Then Raizo again, in his apartment, training. Needless to say, I understand that the movie can’t be wall-to-wall ninja mayhem, but this really kind of killed the flow of the movie.

Luckily, we then get the insight into where Raizo came from, the harsh conditions he was trained in – and this movie spares no children the brunt of physical violence – and then finally, it seems the inevitable meeting between Harris’ agent, Mika, and Raizo. When we do get our first glimpses of the ninja, momentarily in the opening scene, and then in the attack on Mika; there’s some awesome cinematic and special effects tricks used to show the stealthiness of how the ninjas move and blend into shadows. There’s a touch of fantasy in the way they turn into blurs and seem to move faster than the camera – or eye – can see; how they can materialize out of shadows that shouldn’t be able to contain a human form, and of course the mass amounts of mayhem.

One thing that came to mind as I watched masses of both ninja and military forced being dismembered and shredded to pieces either by bullets or bladed weapons, was the difference in how I felt about the violence; especially in contrast to say 2012, where we’re basically treated to the obliteration of the human (and I’d dare say all life’s) population. In that movie it was really disconcerting to see all this destruction on a screen (rated PG-13, nonetheless), and the main point of view we followed was the near hijinks of a few – argumentatively undeserving – souls, outrunning earthquakes, falling skyscrapers and big wave surfing aircraft carriers. In NINJA ASSASSIN, we see every person that dies, on-screen, or we see the results of this violence in the form of (barely) survivors being carried away from the battlefield. It was a strange feeling, and I’m not entirely sure what, or how I feel about it.

But, NINJA ASSASSIN is worth seeing if you love ninjas, oceans of blood and body parts; but if you’re looking for a real story – even one as ham-handed as the Wachowskis can be – probably better to pop in that V FOR VENDETTA dvd again, instead. It’s a far more rewarding experience.

**And as much as one of my favorite moments in the trailer is the ninja being run over by the car, at the end, that whole scene is just ridiculous to think that ninjas wouldn’t think of a better way of catching their prey, than by running through the streets of a major city. Just seemed silly.

V for Vendetta director James McTeigue re-teams with that film’s producers Larry and Andy Wachowski for this action-packed tale of a skilled assassin who was trained by a mythical secret society, and patiently awaits the day he will avenge the death of his best friend. Swept off the streets as a young boy, Raizo (Korean pop star Rain) is transformed into an unstoppable killing machine by a secret society known as the Ozunu Clan. The Ozunu Clan is so proficient at keeping their existence a secret that most people think they are only a myth, but the moment Ozuno assassins kill Raizo’s friend, their days in the shadows are numbered. In the aftermath of that killing, Raizo manages to break free from the gang, subsequently biding his time until the day he can take the entire Ozunu Clan down.
Later, in Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) discovers a money trail connecting multiple political murders to a mysterious network of elusive assassins from the Far East. While her superior Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles) orders Mika to back down and stop asking questions, she stealthily begins searching through classified agency files on a relentless mission to discover the truth about the murders. Singled out as a target as a direct result of her investigation, Mika is marked for death by lethal Ozunu assassin Takeshi (Rick Yune). Just as Mika is about to be silenced forever, Raizo saves her from certain death. But Raizo knows that Takeshi and the rest of the Ozuno Clan won’t stop until he and Mika are both dead. Now, as Raizo and Mika are hunted through the winding streets of Europe, their only hope for survival is to trust one another and stay alive long enough to bring the Ozunu empire crumbling to the ground.
