Michelle Obama puts herself at the mercy of an "External Locus of Power"...

Bite me: global newswire Reuters’ third most-read story at the moment is a long feature on the debate over agricultural production titled “The Fight Over the Future of Food“. It’s a topical issue, no doubt.

Lord Stern, a former chief economist of the World Bank and UK climate change advisor ensured it got even more attention when he told everyone to give up eating meat last month, claiming:

Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better.

The old hippy: you can be as Stern as you like, M’lud, you won’t tear me away from my bacon and eggs…

But Reuter’s piece, for all its topicality and apparent attempt to provide “balance” through comparing and contrasting — like some undergrad essay — organic and biotech approaches to increasing food production, smells a little funny. It starts with the lead:

Giuseppe Oglio’s farm near Milan looks like it’s suffering from neglect. Weeds run rampant amid the rice fields and clover grows unchecked around his millet crop….

… Nearly 5,000 miles away, in laboratories in St. Louis, Missouri, hundreds of scientists at the world’s biggest seed company, Monsanto, also want to feed the world, only their tools of choice are laser beams and petri dishes.

While this may be a mere literary device for the sake of an eye-catching juxtaposition, note the derogatory choice of adjectives for the organic farmer from the very off: “unchecked”, “rampant”, “neglect” and the choice of instruments — lasers, petri dishes — that epitomise scientific neutrality for Monsanto.

This supposed division between submission to the essential anarchy of nature (letting weeds run rampant) and the innovative scientists working around the clock to feed the hungry seems to be becoming — if you’ll excuse the pun — a staple of the debate between “conventional” and “organic” farming method. A few examples:

An article in Farmer’s Weekly entitled “Take Charge of your own Destiny” in which author Matthew Naylor posits a division between conventional farmers who have an ‘Internal Locus of Control’ and take charge of their own destiny and “hippies” who believe in an ‘External Locus of Power’ and put themselves at the mercy of fate.

Dr. Matt Ridley, who in his laughable essay “Genetically modified crops and the perils of rejecting innovation” written for the Policy Exchange think tank claims that “Nostalgic urban dwellers would prefer farmers to leave fields fallow, to grow oats for horses, to tolerate cornflowers in wheat and bees in clover, and not to pollute streams with nitrate run-off.” (A straw man if ever there was one; and would Ridley prefer to pollute streams then?)

I’ll return to point out briefly what a false dichotomy Ridley, Naylor and now Reuters are positing, but first things first, that whole Monsanto petri dish thing…

Photo courtesy of Nic Ut. Agent Orange courtesy of Monsanto.

Lets get one thing crystal clear from the offset: there is nothing remotely detached, scientifically neutral or altruistic about Monsanto; in fact its track record shows it is dedicated, essentially, to destruction.

It was heavily involved in the Manhatten Project to create the first atomic bomb; it manufactured the Agent Orange used extensively throughout the Vietnam War (that iconic picture of the little naked, napalmed girl running down the street? Thanks in part to a Monsanto product) and it now provides DynCorp with Round Up Ultra to spray on the rainforests of Colombia, killing coca plants but also Ecuadorian children. Feel the love.

“Want to feed the world” and “the petri dish” indeed… What utter bullshit. (For more comprehensive, less polemical background on Monsanto’s Machiavellian ways on everything from PCBs to Dioxins and GM Cotton, check out Crocodyl’s page on them here.)

To return to Reuters’ article: Whilst I don’t have time to deconstruct it paragraph by paragraph, along with the points I’ve noted above, a few examples of a narrative that is superficial at best, mendacious at worst stand out:

Affluent consumers may prefer the Oglios of the world to the Monsantos, but their skittishness about high-tech agriculture is making it more difficult to grapple with the mounting crisis over the lack of food.

This is (or should be) a debate about the long-term efficacy of agricultural production and its broader knock-on effect on the biosphere, not the “skittishness” of affluent customers, which is another straw man and utterly irrelevant. It is not a handful of a few rich consumers who are hampering the ability of scientists to grapple with the food crisis Monsanto to maximise it’s profits (would that the simple consumer were that powerful) but legitimate concerns about the threat posed by GMOs to biodiversity and the ability of farmers to have control of their own seed supply.

Meanwhile, neglected by Reuters, there is a growing consensus in the scientific community that industrial agricultural production has wreaked havoc on soil quality and must be curtailed or vitiated with organic/non traditional methods before further damage is done and yields drop significantly.

Drought in the central India state of Madhya Pradesh

The authors of the article turn to India:

India sorely needs another Green Revolution,” said Kushagra Nayan Bajaj, joint managing director of Bajaj Hinduthan, India’s top sugar producer, which is importing raw sugar after a drought hit the domestic cane crop. But a second green revolution would face a strong counterinsurgency, even in a place like India that benefited so profoundly from the first one…

India’s Green Revolution is actually on the verge of collapse as water tables drop massively, pests increase resistance to herbicides and the amount of fertiliser they need triples as soil quality drops. As National Public Radio reported in April this year:

[Farmers] gathered on a recent morning in a stone-paved courtyard to explain why the famed “bread basket” of India is heading toward collapse. Their comparatively small region, Punjab, grows far more wheat and rice for India than any other region.

But now these farmers are running out of groundwater. They have to buy three times as much fertilizer as they did 30 years ago to grow the same amount of crops. They blitz their crops with pesticides, but insects have become so resistant that they still often destroy large portions of crops.

“That benefited so profoundly from the first one”? That’s a little unbalanced then, isn’t it? The authors also go on to claim that “India has so far allowed GM seeds only for cotton, which has boosted productivity”. Well… if you’re a Monsanto researcher, that’s what you claim anyway.

Bt Cotton can actually be argued to have been a major fuck-up and has attracted considerable controversy in India, with some blaming the debt incurred by farmers from buying the seed for a spate of suicides. As Crocodyl’s backgrounder notes:

Farmers around the world have experienced problems with Monsanto’s Bt cotton. Researchers from Cornell University reported in July 2006 that Chinese GM cotton farmers are losing money due to ’secondary’ pests: “After seven years, populations of other insects — such as mirids — have increased so much that farmers are now having to spray their crops up to 20 times a growing season to control them, according to the study of 481 Chinese farmers in five major cotton-producing provinces.”

In India, Bt cotton is prohibited in Kerala and Orissa. After crop failures were reported in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, the Genetic Engineering Approvals Committee (GEAC) refused to renew the company’s license for 3 varieties. In addition, the office of director general of investigation and registration (DGIR) submitted a preliminary investigation report to the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practicies Commission on March 29, 2006 charging Monsanto for setting unreasonably high rates for Bt cotton.

Just three examples plucked at random after a very cursory read of the article, but enough to convince me that it is framing the debate in an entirely unsatisfactory way. The reporters, by setting the parameters of a discussion and giving the illusion of balance by weighing up two approaches, in actual fact are serving to neutralise the broader debate; for if we are going to talk dichotomies, the “fight” for the future of food is more one between people and profit than Monsanto and the weeds.

Just for the record, Thomson Reuters’ CEO is also a director of Merck Co., a pharmaceutical major that has been actively seeking out biotech acquisitions… food for thought, no? While he would no-doubt never interfere in the editorial process of a reputable newswire, one wonders if a more cogent critique of the biotech industry would find its way into print at the firm given the above fact…

Mostly stinky. Very stinky. But still cool. We poured water on it and it wouldn’t go out even. That’s always fun. And now I need to go to bed so I can get up for service tomorrow *hopskipjumpsquee*. Gotta go into it with a happy mindset. I wont be with someone who dislikes me. I wont be with someone who brings me down. I wont be with someone who has rage problems and makes me feel panicky. There. Good thoughts done. Now it’ll be great!..I wonder if there is a person who is all of those things rolled into one…man I would hate that person.

I highly recommend Philip Caputo’s “A Rumor of War,” which I have just completed. Caputo was a Marine lieutenant who served for nearly a year in Vietnam and later went on to become a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist.

The book is a work of non-fiction, a virtual day by day account of the madness that was Vietnam. The author takes pains to make no overt political analysis or judgment, but along the undercurrent flows the unmistakable notion that political ambition and mindless bureaucracy at the highest levels sent hundreds of thousands to senseless death and suffering.

For me the experience of reading “A Rumor of War” was a reminder, one that in truth I shouldn’t need, that the United States has a long history of wartime atrocity. It didn’t all begin with George W. Bush. From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli; from tubercular blankets and other forms of genocide perpetrated on the First Nations peoples to training grounds for Latin American Death Squad colonels at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Here’s what I learned about U.S. military practices in Vietnam forty some years ago that have eerie echoes today:

Although on paper the U.S. military treated prisoners of war according to the Geneva Conventions, they routinely turned over captured suspected Viet Cong to the ARVN (South Vietnamese Army) to be tortured and killed. This has been the case with the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan where prisoners have been turned over to local armies for torture and death; not to mention extraordinary rendition.

In Vietnam Mai Lai was probably the tip of the iceberg. U.S. ground forces routinely used white phosphorous grenades to incinerate entire villages. Apparently U.S. supplied white phosphorous was used by the Israeli military in its recent massacre of civilians in Gaza.

The military leaders in Vietnam were obsessed with kill ratios. They wanted favorable stats on the number of Viet Cong killed. The policy handed down was as follows: if it’s dead and it’s Vietnamese, then it’s VC. One thinks of Colombia, a U.S. client state, where U.S. trained Colombian military have gone as far as killing civilians and dressing their corpses as guerrillas in order to up the count.

Caputo points out certain ironies, that, for example, it was forbidden to execute a Viet Cong prisoner while it was legitimate to kill him at long range; that it was forbidden to use white phosphorous grenades on civilians while at the same time napalming them from the air. He concluded that when in doubt you could always get away with killing at a distance with high tech weapons. Today’s overall U.S. military strategy from Iraq to Afghanistan to Pakistan is to bombard with so-called smart weapons. Unmanned Predator Missiles are a favorite.

In Caputo’s account we see U.S. marines growing frustrated and vengeful towards Vietnamese villagers who gave aid to the Viet Cong. This is a natural reaction because, after all, it is the Viet Cong who are intent on killing U.S. marines. It is what led to a number of atrocities committed against Vietnamese civilians, including children and the elderly. A marine, of course, has been trained to the bone to take orders without question. That he should be in Vietnam, 10,000 miles from home, fighting a guerrilla army made up of Vietnamese for the purpose of Vietnamese national liberation – this is not supposed to occur to him. So, while the war criminals in Washington, those who put him there in the first place for reasons that have nothing to do with the fundamental interests of either the Vietnamese or the American people, act with impunity; the marine grunt finds himself turning into a desensitized and dehumanized killing machine.

The tragic and undeniable conclusion is that fundamentally no lessons were learned from the Vietnam debacle (where hundreds of thousands of Americans and millions of Vietnamese were killed and wounded). You do not win the “hearts and minds” of a people (much less instil democratic values and institutions) by invading a country with overpowering weaponry administered by soldiers inculcated with racist stereotypes and triumphalist attitudes. Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, Bagram, extraordinary rendition, CIA torture chambers: these are today’s atrocities.

As the song goes: “When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?”

Napalm…

We foraged through the garbage dumps
scrounging for food to embellish our emaciated forms,
in adolescent years
searching for the objects which could produce
some small sum for our families.

We did this – not knowing, this was our time to be children.

Planes….
we could hear the whirring of the bombs
then the implosion
as they decimated the landscape
leveled our villages
took and covered our parents -
as the fires of the napalm seared our skin.
We cried the wail of orphans
and sang the songs of those
too young to understand.

We did this – not knowing, this was our time to be children.

We marched, shackled at first at the ankles
then released to march again
a Kalashnikov AK – 47 strapped on our backs
a new pair of combat boots,
we murdered women, children,
our ancestors, our countrymen,
this was our education
this our mission.

We did this – not knowing, this was our time to be children.

Grabbed from the bosoms of our mothers
sold and carried off
carted across the sea
housekeeping in the shadows on Park Avenue
locked in small rooms
adjacent to the pantries we cleaned.

We were sold to service those whose deranged minds
sought consolation in power over the powerless -
we watched our replacements come at age 9.

This was our lot – not knowing, this was our time to be children.

They wrapped our feet when we were four
and did not remove the Golden Lotus binding,
on crippled toes, carried burdens like pack animals.

Across another continent without anesthesia,
elders took pieces of broken glass
snipped our clitoris
stitches of thorns used to control our bleeding.

Our fathers came into our beds
their weight atop us paled
the weight atop our minds.
We carried these rocks like the stone of our countenance.

when they did these things

We did not know – this was our time to be children.

When you heard you cried for us -
– by then, we no longer knew of tears

You told us that if you knew
you would have wrapped us
swaddled us in a warm blanket
like the one in your layette
comforted us, brushed our hair
told us fairy tales, taken us to the zoo
let us pet the lambs at the farmer’s fair
swim in a crystal blue pool
dive from the board
listen to music, and dance…
kick a soccer ball
these were the things, you said,
that children did -

except – there was no longer time for those things

the time to be children had passed
along with our innocence.

When all this transpired – we did not know

it was our time to be children.

Current News About PTSD

Most combat veterans that have PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, do not talk about it. Many are heavy drinkers attempting to drowned the disorder to keep the monster at bay. Booze and drugs do not work. They make the vampire worse. Get your life back. Support and understanding is out there.

__________________________

What is post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD (visit this source for more information)?

PTSD is a real illness. You can get PTSD after living through or seeing a dangerous event, such as war, a hurricane, or bad accident. PTSD makes you feel stressed and afraid after the danger is over. It affects your life and the people around you.

If you have PTSD, you can get treatment and feel better.

Who gets PTSD?

PTSD can happen to anyone at any age. Children get PTSD too.

You don’t have to be physically hurt to get PTSD. You can get it after you see other people, such as a friend or family member, get hurt.

What causes PTSD?

Living through or seeing something that’s upsetting and dangerous can cause PTSD. This can include:

Being a victim of or seeing violence

The death or serious illness of a loved one

War or combat

Car accidents and plane crashes

Hurricanes, tornadoes, and fires

Violent crimes, like a robbery or shooting.

There are many other things that can cause PTSD. Talk to your doctor if you are troubled by something that happened to you or someone you care about.

Combat PTSD: What are the Symptoms?

http://ptsdcombat.blogspot.com/2006/03/combat-ptsd-what-are-symptoms.htmlIntrusive – Re-experiencing of the traumatic event(s)

Distressing recollections

Flashbacks (feeling as if you’re back in combat while awake)

Nightmares (frequent recurrent combat images while asleep)

Feeling anxious or fearful (as if you’re back in the combat zone again)

Avoidant – Drawing inward or becoming emotionally numb

Extensive and active avoidance of activities, places, thoughts, feelings, memories, people, or conversations related to or that remind you of your combat experiences

Loss of interest

Feeling detached from others (finding it hard to have loving feelings or experiencing any strong emotions)

Feeling disconnected from the world around you and things that happen to you

Restricting your emotions

Trouble remembering important parts of what happened during the trauma

Shutting down (feeling emotionally and/or physically numb)

Things around you seem strange or unreal

Feeling strange and/or experiencing weird physical sensations

Not feeling pain or other sensations

________________________

Since returning from Vietnam in 1966, I couldn’t put a term to the symptoms I was experiencing. For fifteen years, I was a heavy drinker and never talked about what happened. The nightmares that are called flashbacks came at night and were vivid and real. There are many nights even now where I will wake and listen for warning sounds that danger is near. I’ll reach for the weapon I keep close to where I sleep to make sure it is still there.

I teach a class on Documenting International Affairs at The New School. We talk about and watch (in and outside class) all the usual subjects–Why We Fight, Rambo II, Star Wars, Hearts and Minds, Cry Freedom–but we also talk about great filmmakers like the German Harun Farocki, whose 22 minute film, “Inextinguishable Fire” (it came out in 1969) about the use of napalm during the Vietnam War, is still, for me at least, brilliant in the way it messes with the accepted notions of documentary.

Watch it.

(“Our apologies, good friends, for the fracture of good order, the burning of paper instead of children…”)

“Some 10 or 12 of us (the number is still uncertain) will, if all goes well (ill?) take our religious bodies during this week to a draft center in or near Baltimore. There we shall, of purpose and forethought, remove the 1-A files, sprinkle them in the public street with homemade napalm, and set them afire. For which act we shall, beyond doubt, be placed behind bars for some portion of our natural lives, in consequence of our inability to live and die content in the plagued city, to say “peace peace” when there is no peace, to keep the poor poor, the home- less, the thirsty and hungry homeless, thirsty and hungry.

“Our apologies, good friends, for the fracture of good order, the burning of paper instead of children, the angering of the orderlies in the front parlor of the charnel house. We could not, so help us God, do otherwise.

“For we are sick at heart, our hearts give us no rest for thinking of the Land of Burning Children. And for thinking of that other Child, of whom the poet Luke speaks. The infant was taken up in the arms of an old man, whose tongue grew resonant and vatic at the touch of that beauty.

“And the old man spoke; this child is set for the fall and rise of many in Israel, a sign that is spoken against. Small consolation; a child born to make trouble, and to die for it, the First Jew (not the last) to be subject of a ‘definitive solution.’ He sets up the cross and dies on it; in the Rose Garden of the executive mansion, on the D.C. Mall, in the courtyard of the Pentagon.

“We see the sign, we read the direction: you must bear with us, for his sake. Or if you will not, the consequences are our own. For it will be easy, after all, to discredit us. Our record is bad; trouble makers in church and state, a priest married despite his vows, two convicted felons.

“We have jail records, we have been turbulent, uncharitable, we have failed in love for the brethren, have yielded to fear and despair and pride, often in our lives. Forgive us. We are no more, when the truth is told, than ignorant beset men, jockeying against all chance, at the hour of death, for a place at the right hand of the dying one.

“We act against the law at a time of the Poor People’s March, at a time moreover when the government is announcing ever more massive paramilitary means to confront disorder in the cities. It is announced that a computerized center is being built in the Pentagon at a cost of some seven millions of dollars, to offer instant response to outbreaks anywhere in the land; that moreover, the government takes so serious a view of civil disorder, that federal troops, with war experience in Vietnam, will have first responsibility to quell civil disorder. The implications of all this must strike horror in the mind of any thinking man.

“The war in Vietnam is more and more literally brought home to us. Its inmost meaning strikes the American ghettos; in servitude to the affluent. We must resist and protest this crime.

“Finally, we stretch out our hands to our brothers throughout the world. We who are priests, to our fellow priests. All of us who act against the law, turn to the poor of the world, to the Vietnamese, to the victims, to the soldiers who kill and die, for the wrong reasons, for no reason at all, because they were so ordered—by the authorities of that public order which is in effect a massive institutionalized disorder.

“We say: killing is disorder, life and gentleness and community and unselfishness is the only order we recog- nize. For the sake of that order, we risk our liberty, our good name.

“The time is past when good men can remain silent, when obedience can segregate men from public risk, when the poor can die without defense. We ask our fellow Christians to consider in their hearts a question which has tortured us, night and day, since the war began. How many must die before our voices are heard, how many must be tortured, dislocated, starved, maddened? How long must the world’s resources be raped in the service of legalized murder? When, at what point, will you say no to this war? We have chosen to say, with the gift of our liberty, if necessary our lives: the violence stops here, the death stops here, the suppression of the truth stops here, this war stops here.

“We wish also to place in question, by this act, all suppositions about normal times, about longings for an untroubled life in a somnolent church, about a neat time-table of ecclesiastical renewal which in respect to the needs of men, amounts to another form of time serving.

“Redeem the times! The times are inexpressibly evil. Christians pay conscious, indeed religious tribute, to Caesar and Mars; by the approval of overkill tactics, by brinkmanship, by nuclear liturgies, by racism, by support of genocide. They embrace their society with all their heart, and abandon the cross. They pay lip service to Christ and military service to the powers of death. And yet, and yet, the times are inexhaustibly good, solaced by the courage and hope of many. The truth rules, Christ is not forsaken.

“In a time of death, some men —the resisters, those who work hardily for social change, those who preach and embrace the unpalatable truth— such men overcome death, their lives are bathed in the light of the resurrection, the truth has set them free. In the jaws of death, of contumely, of good and ill report, they proclaim their love of the brethren. We think of such men, in the world, in our nation, in the churches; and the stone in our breast is dissolved; we take heart once more.”

1) Did the people of Viet Nam use lanterns of stone?

2) Did they hold ceremonies to reverence the opening of buds?

3) Were they inclined to quiet laughter?

4) Did they use bone and ivory, jade and silver, for ornament?

5) Had they an epic poem?

6) Did they distinguish between speech and singing?

Sir, their light hearts turned to stone. It is not remembered whether in gardens stone lanterns illumined pleasant ways.

Perhaps they gathered once to delight in blossom, but after their children were killed there were no more buds.

Sir, laughter is bitter to the burned mouth.

A dream ago, perhaps. Ornament is for joy. All the bones were charred. Remember, most were peasants; their life was in rice and bamboo.

When peaceful clouds were reflected in the paddies and the water buffalo stepped surely along terraces, maybe fathers told their sons old tales. When bombs smashed those mirrors there was time only to scream.

There is an echo yet of their speech which was like a song. It was reported their singing resembled the flight of moths in moonlight. Who can say? It is silent now.

A press release by Survival International: “An article implying Peruvian Indians should be bom

A press release by Survival International:

“An article implying Peruvian Indians should be bombed with napalm has been named by human rights organisation Survival International as the ‘most racist article’ published in the last year by the mainstream media.

The article was published in the Peruvian national newspaper Correo. It calls indigenous people ‘savages’, ‘Palaeolithic’ and ‘primitive’; says that their languages have no more than eighty words; and declares that, in the protests that have recently engulfed much of Peru’s Amazon, they were manipulated by ‘communist excrement’.

‘For those of you who still think of these ‘ethnic groups’ as ‘good’, ‘naïve’ and ‘pure’, I will remind you that it was these same people who perfected the art of shrinking the heads of their enemies and wearing them on the belts holding up their loincloths. If the ‘natives’ didn’t shrink the heads of the policemen they killed (in the recent protests) and eat their remains, it was only because there wasn’t time.’

The article also attacks three indigenous congresswomen, ridiculing their names and referring to them as the ‘three starlets in the parliamentary sewers’. Its response to the indigenous protests against the exploitation of natural resources on their land is: ‘Get f****d, loincloths and all’. The penultimate sentence is: ‘I don’t know what keeps the president from providing the air force with all the napalm necessary.’

The ‘most racist article of the year’ award is part of Survival’s ‘Stamp it Out’ campaign which aims to challenge racist descriptions of indigenous peoples in the world’s media. The winner receives a certificate inscribed with a quotation from Lakota Sioux author Luther Standing Bear: ‘All the years of calling the Indian a savage has never made him one.’

Stamp it Out is supported by eminent journalists such as the BBC’s World Affairs correspondent John Simpson, George Monbiot, John Vidal, and best-selling authors Tim Butcher and Simon Garfield.

Survival’s director, Stephen Corry, said today, ‘This article makes depressing reading for anyone who thinks newspapers should educate and inform their readers. We hope the publicity this award receives will make the paper think twice before printing such offensive rubbish again.’

Read an English translation of the article

Metafisici.
