ESTERO — Estero coach Rich Dombroski beat the “year of firsts” into the ground.

The steady, stubborn words propelled the Wildcats to keep pushing after a close loss to 5A-11 leader Cape Coral in early October.

Dombroski repeats it because he wants to remind, motivate and induce feeling.

A win at Lehigh (3-5, 3-1 5A-11) Friday night will assure Estero (5-3, 3-2) a spot in the playoffs and a winning record for the first time in a decade.

Cape Coral (5-3, 4-0) has already clinched the 5A-11 title. The Estero-Lehigh winner will finish runner-up in district.

The Wildcats understand the game’s significance. Dombroski assured that.

“We had a good week of practice and the kids are excited,” Dombroski said. “We’re focused and we know what’s at stake. I’ve talked all year about making this the first time in 10 years that we make the playoffs and have a winning season. Now we can make it happen.”

Estero played for the opportunity all year.

After losing three straight to start the season, Estero won three in row, led by the resurgent passing of senior quarterback Ryan Sides.

A fourth quarter turnover and resulting 44-42 loss to Cape Coral on Oct. 6 rekindled memories of last season’s late collapse.

Then an improved running game and disciplined defense carried Estero to back-to-back district wins, including last week’s 27-14 victory over Cape Coral-Mariner, where running back Eric McFadden ran for 286 yards and three touchdowns.

Now Dombroski can talk tough.

“I told the kids, Lehigh is no better than some teams we beat and no better than some teams who we lost to,” Dombroski said. “We just need to play our game. We’re going to score points. If our defense steps up and we win the turnover battle, we have a good shot of winning.”

Still, Dombroski stays wary of Leigh’s potential.

The Lightning struggled with injuries all season, losing three straight to start the year.

Winless in games outside of district play this season, Lehigh made the playoffs in 2009-10 as a 3A-12 team.

“Look beyond Lehigh’s record and they’re a good football team,” Dombroski said. “They’ve been one of the top programs in our area for a while. They have athletes and they’re large up front, which is a problem because we’re undersized. We haven’t seen speed like them since East Lee (Sept. 23). They’ll be at their best.”

Dombroski won’t be greedy.

He thinks big-picture, realizing a loss against Lehigh would eliminate Estero from playoff contention, but not prevent a winning season if the Wildcats beat Bishop Verot to close the year.

But he can’t hide his thirst for firsts.

“To beat a caliber team like Lehigh would be icing on the cake,” Dombroski said. “We have to play a perfect game. If we don’t come out on top, good things have happened this year either way.”

The footage also included a video of the woman and her boyfriend, who lived with her in the apartment, having sex.

The woman’s father said Bennett was the couple’s roommate, and that the crime, which is a misdemeanor offense, amounts to “visually raping” his daughter.

“It’s your own home. There is the ultimate expectation of privacy, and that was violated,” he said.

During the Sheriff’s Office’s investigation, investigators found three holes in the woman’s bathroom, as well as three holes in the wall of Bennett’s adjacent room. (NOTE: NEW TENANTS PLEASE FILL IN ALL HOLES ON EVERY WALL!!!!)

The couple first discovered something was amiss when their neighbor found public files on his video game system that he hadn’t seen before. As he opened the items in a folder called “Dave’s files”, he discovered the videos, according to reports. The victim’s father said the four units in the apartment building shared the same wireless router.

The neighbor, who is a family friend of one of the victims, called the couple when he discovered the videos. They rushed home from work to confirm that they were the ones in the images.

The couple told investigators they never gave permission to be videotaped.

As of Tuesday, Bennett remained behind bars. During his first appearance in court, a judge tripled Bennett’s bond to $105,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 23.

Store Clerk Shoots And Kills Would Be Robber

In a story from Naples, FL this morning, a store clerk has shot and killed a would be robber as he tried to take her 1 year old baby out the door after attempting to rob the business.

The store’s owner said that his grandaughter, Elizabeth Easterly was in the 24 hour food store alone with her 1 and 2 year old children when the man stormed in, demanding money, and then grabbed the stroller that the one year old was stting in and was heading out the door when Easterly shot him.

The perp was taken to a local hospital where he died of the gunshot injury.

Ms. Easterly was more than justified in protecting her child in this situation in my eyes. However, Why were they there in the first place? Even I would not have brought young children into a situatuion like that where something like this could happen. But then again, that’s me, and my opinion.

Drunk Mom Arrested After Son Calls 911

A drunken mother was arrested outside of Ormond Beach, FL after her son called 911 to report that his mother was ‘drunk, and out of control at the time’

Patricia Siciliano was apparently driving at speeds around 100 miles an hour down I-95 when her son pleaded with her to slow down, and stop the car, because he didn’t want to die, according to a report filed on the WESH News Website

The young man said that he had to pull his mother out of the way to get the car off to the side of the road, and eventually the family ran out of gas, and were marooned there before the young man called authorties. The family was on the way home from a concert at Destination Daytona.

Apparently, Siciliano punched her husband in the face several times, and while her son was trying to get the car stopped, punched, bit, and scratched her own son.

Just as officers pulled up, the young man was heard saying that his mother “wasn’t a very smart drunk”, and true to form, she wrestled with officers, and even spat on them as they tried to take her into custody.

Siciliano has been charged with 3 counts Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting arrest without violence,  Domestic Abuse, and Child Abouse Without Great Harm.

I don’t need to say anything…Her son said it for us. “She’s NOT a very smart drunk”…

Pirate Radio Measure Advances In FL House

In a statement saying that bootlegging costs the state millions of dollars in tax revenues, The State House Criminal Justice Subcommittee approved measure HB189 which will allow easier access for the music industry to procecute pirates, in a story on WCTV.tv  The bill would carry a hefty fine if passed by the full house, and could reach in upwards of $250,000.00

The measure was passed easily, but concerns were raised that the bill did not adress internet pirating, and hurt low income floridians that chose to sell copies of pirated music videos, and music at local flea markets.

Being a former DJ, I know this is a HUGE issue everywhere. My opinion? Buy your Music Legitimately, and if your brocasting it, you better have permission from that artist, and songwriter if necessary, with some kind of written verfcation to back it up, or pay the royalties. If not, it’s not just the state you have to worry about. This is NO joke.

NAPLES — For Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain, Naples is a buttress of financial support alongside other, much bigger, gold mines like Houston and Atlanta.

The small but wealthy Naples metropolitan area is home to pockets of staunch support for Bachmann, the Minnesota congresswoman, and Cain, the Georgia businessman, and their followers are showing it with their checkbooks, according to the most recent campaign finance figures.

Between the two candidates, Bachmann has pulled the most cash from here: $43,325, as of June 30, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics. Only donors in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, in her home state, have given her more.

Cain is generating most of his contributions from Atlanta, followed by Houston, Dallas and then Naples, which has given $23,000 to that campaign.

Frank Torres, a political strategist in Central Florida, said money gushing from Naples is no surprise.

Campaigns “identify these pockets of potential, well-funded support,” he said. “Herman Cain has been making the rounds in Florida for quite some time.”

Cain visited Naples in June and was greeted by supporters, including radio show host Joe Whitehead and Barron Collier Cos. Chairman Lamar Gable, a Democrat. Bachmann was well-received at an August stop in Naples.

As national attention turns to Orlando this weekend for a mock primary, some Collier County Republicans say they are standing behind Cain and Bachmann, who have struggled recently in national and statewide opinion polls.

“I find (Cain) extremely refreshing,” said Lavigne Kirkpatrick, the state committeewoman on the county’s Republican Executive Committee.

She said she will vote for Cain as one of about 100 Collier County delegates in Saturday’s straw poll. Like other Republicans, Kirkpatrick said it is important to nominate someone who can beat President Barack Obama in next year’s election.

“I think he’s the only one that can beat Obama,” Kirkpatrick said. “I would really like to see Herman Cain debate Obama. I’d buy a front-row ticket to that.”

Both Cain and Bachmann have attracted support beyond the Republican mainstream.

Cain, who lacks any political experience, has the backing of many, like Kirkpatrick, who laud his outsider status and business success. And Bachmann is a favorite of the tea party movement, which she vowed to champion when she announced her candidacy in June.

“We do have a lot of Naples tea party people who really do like Bachmann,” said Barry Willoughby, founder of the Naples tea party organization, who said he still is undecided.

Other candidates are making money here, too, but their campaigns are hardly living off those earnings. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney drew $69,750 from Naples — a small fraction of a multimillion-dollar fundraising effort that has cashed in $2.9 million from New York City and Boston alone, according to the figures.

As potentially successful nominees emerge, Torres predicts Naples money will become even more earnestly sought.

“Expect the winner of the straw poll to become a frequent visitor of Naples,” he said.

Running, biking and swimming are all activities that require the hip, knee and shoulder joints to function properly and pain-free. That’s why Dr. Robert J. Zehr and the Zehr Center for Orthopaedics are sponsoring the inaugural Galloway Captiva Triathlon at South Seas Island Resort on September 18, 2011.

“People often think that joint pain is the beginning of the end of their active lifestyle. That’s not necessarily true,” says Dr. Zehr. “There are several treatment options to ease the pain of arthritic joints. And if joint replacement surgery is required, new surgical methods can restore a patient’s activity level and provide a pain-free life.”

The direct anterior approach to total hip replacement is one of those methods. It is minimally invasive, more accurate and less restrictive than the conventional approach. Using an incision of no more than 4,” the procedure is accomplished without cutting muscle or detaching it from the bone. The real time use of a specialized X-ray machine known as a fluoroscope allows the surgeon to see the placement of the component parts of the hip replacement and to make adjustments immediately to give the patient the most accurately placed hip prosthesis and to have the most equal leg lengths before leaving the operating room. After conventional hip replacement surgery, patients must limit flexing of the hip to no more than 60 to 90 degrees, which complicates normal activities like sitting in a chair, on a toilet seat, putting on shoes or getting into a car. Simply climbing stairs may also be more difficult during recovery when following the conventional replacement surgery. These restrictions, simply do not apply after hip replacement using the direct anterior approach technique.

In December of 2008 Sue Ann Miller, 62, had her right hip replaced by Dr. Zehr using the direct anterior approach technique. Six months later she was back to competing in sprint triathlons and has participated in several events since, including two half-marathons. Miller will be competing in the inaugural Galloway Captiva Triathlon.

“Those results are not unusual,” Dr. Zehr explains. “Patients receiving hip replacements with the direct anterior approach are up and walking within hours of the surgery with the aid of a walker or a cane. The hospital stay is usually two days and most patients can return to regular activities like golf, biking and distance walking in as few as four weeks.”

The learning curve for this technique is pretty steep according to Dr. Zehr. The use of a specialized operating table, the hana arthroplasty table, aids the surgeon, but not every hospital can afford one. These factors combine to make the direct anterior approach to hip replacement a highly specialized technique, used by fewer than 5% of orthopedic surgeons nationally.

ESTERO — The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team split its senior day doubleheader Saturday, shutting out Belmont 6-0 in the opener but dropping the nightcap 7-4.

The doubleheader split loss drops FGCU (28-22, 11-3 Atlantic Sun) one game behind Jacksonville in the A-Sun standings with six games remaining. The Eagles and Dolphins play a doubleheader in Jacksonville on Monday that could ultimately decide the conference regular-season champion.

“Nothing’s changed,” FGCU coach David Deiros said. “We still control our destiny, but our margin of error just went down to zero.”

On Saturday, senior right-hander Cat McDaniel (14-9) needed only one run from the FGCU offense to earn the win in Game 1. And she got it in the first inning from a solo shot to right field by fellow senior Courtney Platt, who is batting .413 this season.

“I thought I was way ahead of it,” said Platt, a Gulf Coast High grad. “The wind was going out, so I had a little help.”

McDaniel pitched six shutout innings, giving up three hits and striking out five.

“Catherine (McDaniel) again showed why this is the best season she’s had,” Deiros said. “We’ve got to ride her for a little while longer.”

Senior Kelci Breaux (6-6) came in to pitch a flawless seventh to finish the game.

After Platt’s home run in the first, FGCU’s Regan Knapik drove in Emily Lanier with a sacrifice fly to put FGCU ahead 2-0 in the second.

Center fielder Mariah Fernandez, who went 4-7 on the day with three RBIs, drove in Platt and Tori Williams in the fourth. Fernandez then crossed home plate after Lanier reached on an error by Belmont right fielder Ashley Hammer. FGCU led 5-0 after four.

In Game 2, Belmont (10-31, 3-11) blew up in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits off junior righty Stephanie Sullivan (6-6). The Bruins were helped by two FGCU errors in the field to take their first lead of the day at 4-2. A double by Julie Harmon scored Kelley Cash to give the Bruins a three-run lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

Breaux pitched the final two-plus innings for FGCU, giving up three runs on seven hits.

The Eagles rallied to cut the deficit to one with RBIs from Fernandez and Kristen Bembnoski, but Belmont tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh.

The Bruins did not allow the Eagles, who stranded eleven runners, to reach first in the bottom of the inning.
