FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE TO PRESENT RECORDING ARTISTS NAS AND DAMIAN ‘JR. GONG’ MARLEY FOR SPECIAL PROGRAM

‘Distant Relatives’ Event Dec. 12 Will Feature Hip-Hop and Reggae Legends In Conversation Moderated by MTV VJ Sway, Made Possible by VTech

WASHINGTON (Nov. 18, 2009)—National Geographic Live will conclude its fall event series with a one-of-a-kind evening with some of hip-hop’s most legendary figures. “Distant Relatives,” sponsored by VTech, will feature hip-hop icon Nas and Grammy-winning artist Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, son of Bob Marley, in a discussion about the often under-appreciated evolution of and deep-rooted connections between reggae and hip-hop.

Joining them for this conversation, moderated by MTV VJ Sway, will be key players in the development of both musical genres, including Kool Herc, Rakim, Daddy U-Roy, King Jammy, Jeff Chang, Pat McKay, Waterflow and DJ Red Alert.

The event will take place at National Geographic’s Grosvenor Auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online at www.nglive.org, via telephone at (202) 857-7700, or in person at the National Geographic ticket office between
9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Tickets purchased online can be picked up in the lobby prior to the event.

Hip-hop, now a multibillion-dollar industry, originated as a vital form of cultural expression in Africa that was translocated by the slave trade to the Caribbean and the American colonies. It blossomed a half century ago in the dance halls of Kingston, Jamaica, and soon migrated to the parks jams and recreational centers of New York City, where the culture became known as hip-hop.

This evolution forms the basis of the “Distant Relatives” music project, a collaborative effort by Marley and Nas, which will comprise an album set for release in early 2010, a documentary film, performances and a series of public discussions, the first of which is this event hosted by National Geographic.

An open-mic party will be hosted at popular Washington nightclub Zanzibar following the event. National Geographic ticket holders will receive free admission with proof of purchase. For more information on the Zanzibar event, visit www.zanzibar-otw.com.

This event also will be streamed live and broadcast online at www.natgeomusic.net.

About “Distant Relatives”
“Distant Relatives” is an album created by two great artists to explore and celebrate the correlations and deep-rooted connections between reggae and hip-hop, tracing both sounds back to the African motherland that is both the cradle of humanity and the wellspring of mankind’s music. Unlike all previous collaborations between Jamaican and American artists, “Distant Relatives” is neither a remix nor a featured guest spot on a single track but a fully collaborative effort filling an entire album, opening new avenues of musical expression. Who better to fulfill this long-overdue mission? The youngest son of the legendary Bob Marley, and a hip-hop icon since 1991: Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and Nas, whose success as a duo was proved in 2006 with the double-Grammy-Award-winning “Road to Zion.”
In the midst of a very public and difficult divorce, Kelis has managed to come out with a new song. I actually like this track. The beat is catchy and her melodies are simple yet effective. The Lyrics are dope as well. Always a good mix!

Since Nas dropped Hip Hop Is Dead back in 2006, many of the 90s era of rap has tossed in their two cents echoing the sentiment that today’s age of Hip Hop has become too saturated with imitators and not enough innovation.

KRS-One recently made remarks towards the Def Jam label around the time of the Hip Hop Honors which was celebrating Def Jam’s 25th anniversary. Although he stated that the brand has helped to revolutionize rap, it has also been the catalyst in destroying the genre.

“Def Jam is the dopest label in Hip Hop, in the culture of Hip Hop. There really would be no Hip Hop as we know it today if it wasn’t for Def Jam, but you don’t get that respect without also being the label that single-handledly destroyed Hip Hop.”

After such a statement, there seemed to be nobody to counter that statement, not even one rap artist on Def Jam. Their silence seemed to only solidify what he stated.

Members of Triple Cs, however, have not sat well with the words with the Hip Hop legend and have even found sparks of him being a hypocrite. Speaking with Rollingout.com, Torch touched on the older generation calling the game dead, but not keeping in mind the way they initially came in the game.

“To top it all off, it’s like Hip Hop is dead, but when they had their run, the same people that say these things, they be in pictures with AKs. They forget all that now. You need your track record, do your homework and the same record that people are pointing their fingers, you gotta realize, every time you point finger, the other four are point right back at you.”

The picture in question references the album cover to 1987s Criminal Minded with the rapper draped in bullets and holding a firearm, as well as, the 1988 album By All Means Necessary..

He also added that the campaign against new Hip Hop is being lead by those that can’t adapt to the time and are suffering with their own musical projects.

“You notice it’s the people that always say ‘Hip Hop is dead,’ they ain’t got no money.”

The covers in question were actually politically driven and inspired by Malcolm X, but I guess no one really cares about history these days. The time then is similar, but nothing to the time now and people must find a way to realize that.

Clocking in at a total running time of 37 Minutes, Nas’ 10-Track long Illmatic is a no-questions-asked Hip Hop Classic. It is also one of the Albums included in the highly coveted list of albums The Source Magazine gave 5 mics (Pre-2005, when the entire process was bastardized by giving Lil’ Kim 5 mics). Since then, a very large number of albums, including all of Nas’ subsequent albums, have been weighed heavily against Illmatic to judge the quality.

“Halftime” was the first single off Illmatic, and demonstrates the Queens emcee’s ability to effortlessly rock the mic with unparallelled lyricism.

I think dude doesnt really know how small the internet base is when it comes to selling units.

When he created Thisis50, the traffic was so huge, the views, feedback and all, like millions per view, people commenting on his songs, videos sayin how dope they are, and he really thought it was a huge ammount of people watching and rooting for 50

After TOS low sales, he still aint learned.I mean, Elephant in the sand was a great tape and over here, it had like 500 000 downloads in a matter of days,50 thinking the same response would be for the album.
But he was wrong man

Same with Buddens, each time he hosts one of his dumb ass Live streams, there are like tens of thousands watchers, each Joe Budden thread in SOhh are over 10 000 views and yet, dude sells 14 000 online.

50 Cents First week Sales Thread in Sohh is over 150 000 views, MJ Death was only 50 000 or something, and yet, sales are low…Thats Becoz 90% of those people come there for entertainment, not music. Those are not rap fans anymore, those are bored people that like this whole Ross Said That, 50 said that, Ross Sold That, 50 is Selling this thing.

Hiphop Has Become somewhat of Entertainment, and 50 made it contrebute. With his pimping Curly etc.

Thats When rappers stop focusing on making dope music and think all their twitter followers will buy albums/

I mean Jim Jones and 50 have over 1 million followers on Twitter,Jesus Man, Not even a 10th of that bought the album. There are rappers who cant sell and they have 500 000 twitter followers.

I think twitter and other thisis networks shoulds be other way around, Instead
of a member joining the Twitter or Thisis and than leaking albums, etc, he/she would have to buy the album first at the Twitter store or Thisis50 store and with that given the
Confirmation code, than be able to follow/Join.

I mean, theoretically speaking, those 1.3 million people following 50 cent, why are they following him? 50 cent is a rapper,he sells CD’s for living, shouldnt his sales be 1.3 million?

Those people following him all have high speed internet access, computers and internet bill plans, and they cant afford 15 Dollars an album CD?

i think soon rappers will start eliminating THisis and Twitter…I think 50 will actually delete his twitter account or Thisi50 in spite of low sales.

As its clearly hurting the sales, rather than helping, as 50 Thought and overestimated it.

There’s an old expression I like: “Different isn’t better, it’s just differe

There’s an old expression I like: “Different isn’t better, it’s just different.”

When it comes to SSDs based around a SATA or SAS format — that’s pretty much the case in my view. Yes there are exceptional products suited for enterprise like Pliant and STEC. And, yes — there are more conventional items for consumers like Intel and OCZ (and about 20 others). And yes, the standard pacakge 3.5″ form factor for these devices make them suitable for shared storage as well as for integration into hetreogenous and homogenous storage environments like you might find in a typical data center. Embracing these SSDs you will find the usual manufacturers like EMC, NetApp, SUN, and others. Their use of SSD is evolutionary, easy to digest.

PCIe-based SSDs are very different. For one thing, they sit on the server system bus right next to the CPU. This is a direct attached (DAS) model that has numerous advantages for certain types of processing. We agree that not all PCIe-based SSDs are suitable for all applications — but in terms of applications that can take advantage of bandwidth, throughput, and latency enhancements, these devices are indeed a superior architecture.

There are some challenges:

1) Not all servers are created equal. PCIe-based devices require strict adherance to the PCIe specifications at the server level. Ping if you want to learn more about why this is critical.

2) Many servers do not have enough PCIe slots configure appropriately for PCIe devices. This is especially true when creating HIGH AVAILABILITY (or HA) environments.

3) Only a very few servers have enough of the right type of slots to be meaningful from a value perspective. It makes no sense to refresh a server for a PCIe-based SSD if you have to spend 2x or 3x to get the right slots, power, etc.

4) Applications may not be optimized for SSD DAS. No kidding. OLTP or DBMS applications that can take the most advantage of SSD DAS are optimized for high latency disk access over networks such as NAS. These applications are totally comfortable sending out 1000s or 10s of 1000s of transaction requests to build up a queue depth for the CPUs. The net result of this is that the CPUs appear very busy but in fact aren’t doing very much. These limitations are known and well defined. Over time, application vendors such as SUN, Oracle, and Microsoft will implement fixes to optimize PCIe-based storage.

Aside from these items, there is a discussion regarding suitability of NAND flash devices in the data center as well as the MLC/SLC issue. I’ll tackle those in another post. In my veiw, MySpace and Wine.com are leading the way — and there are many others who have not come forward publicly preferring to keep the ROI and GREEN advantages all to themselves.

The latest announcements from Fusion-io, Texas Memory Systems, Micron and others point out these differences. FULL DISCLOSURE: I am a former employe of Fusion-io.

UMTS protocols được chia thành 2 tầng (strata): 1. NAS (non access stratum) 2. AS (access stratum)

UMTS protocols được chia thành 2 tầng (strata):

1. NAS (non access stratum)
2. AS (access stratum)

Trag emerges political, releasing his Intelligent Hoodlum album. ‘Nuff respect, but he’s eclipsed by young rapper Nas. Trag falls prey to the streets where he discovers teen rappers Capone-N-Noreaga. After dissing Snoop Dogg, they get a record deal. Trag is hailed as a genius for masterminding their geo-political War Report album.
Capone is busted and Noreaga finds stardom, leaving Trag to starve. Then Trag’s mom ODs. At first Trag turns to crime, then finds inspiration, turning pain to beauty with underground albums Against All Odds and Still Reporting. Trag meets Nore to talk about making music together again, but cops pull up on ‘em, throwing Trag in jail. Out on bail, Trag is still reporting from the hood, keeping it real in Queensbridge.“

During the course of experimentation with 11gR2, I was given some space on a Sun Storage 7410 NAS.

During the course of experimentation with 11gR2, I was given some space on a Sun Storage 7410 NAS. In the past NAS meant using NFS with obscure mount options that seemed to vary from platform to platform. So, at first I went scrambling for the “best practices” to use with Oracle NAS on Solaris.

There is a nice Metalink article Note:359515.1 with the latest information for all platforms. This Metalink note does include the “tcp” option which is not necessary on Solaris. So it boiled down to the following mount options for using Oracle data files on NAS devices with Solaris.

rw,bg,hard,nointr,rsize=32768,
wsize=32768,noac,
forcedirectio, vers=3,suid

But wait, what about the new 11g feature to use direct NFS “dNFS”? More searching…

configuring dNFS on Solaris

This is a fairly simple process. Although Oracle dNFS configuration is fairly well documented for Linux, I will post my interpretation and commentary to help other Solaris users that might want to configure dNFS.

First, create mount the NFS share just as you would have in the past. Oracle still needs to see the file system from the OS point of view. You don’t have to use the mount options as in the past, but you might want them anyway for OS tools may access the mount. You would most likely place these options in the “/etc/vfstab” file, but I will just show the mount command.

mount -o

rw,bg,hard,nointr,rsize=32768,\
wsize=32768,noac,
forcedirectio,vers=3,suid \

toromondo.west:/export/glennf /ar1

Second, you have to link the direct NFS libraries in place of ODM. This is a little clunky, but not terrible.

cd $ORACLE_HOME/lib
cp libodm11.so libodm11.so_stub
ln -s libnfsodm11.so libodm11.so

Third, create the “$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/oranfstab” file. This file defines the various details Oracle needs to directly access the NFS share. You can configure multiple paths, so that Oracle can multiplex access to the NFS share. This is for redundancy and load balancing. There is another Metalink article ID:822481.1 that details how to configure dNFS with multiple paths across the same subnet and force the OS to not route packets. This is a great feature, which I will try once I get some more network plumbing. For now, I just did the most simple configuration as shown below.

cat $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/oranfstab
server: toromondo.west
path: toromondo.west
export: /export/glennf mount:/ar1

Finally, you will be able to see if this takes effect by looking at the “alert.log” file. When Oracle starts up it places debug information in the alert.log file so we can see if Oracle is using Direct NFS or not.

grep NFS alert_*.log
Oracle instance running with ODM: Oracle Direct NFS ODM Library Version 2.0
Direct NFS: attempting to mount /export/glennf on filer toromondo.west defined in oranfstab
Direct NFS: channel config is:
Direct NFS: mount complete dir /export/glennf on toromondo.west mntport 38844 nfsport 2049
Direct NFS: channel id [0] path [toromondo.west] to filer [toromondo.west] via local [] is UP
Direct NFS: channel id [1] path [toromondo.west] to filer [toromondo.west] via local [] is UP

That’s all there is to it. Hopefully, you will find this useful.
