Ao se aproximar 600 pés da estação espacial a Atlantis faz uma rotação em backflip para expor o escudo térmico aos engenheiros e fotógrafos da estação Jeffrey Williams e Nicole Stott.

As fotos serão transmitidas para o controle da missão avaliar se o escudo térmico foi danificado durante o lançamento.

Astronaut Robert Satcher uses a digital still camera to expose take a self-portrait during the STS-129 mission’s first spacewalk. During the six-hour, 37-minute spacewalk, Satcher and astronaut Mike Foreman installed a spare S-band antenna structural assembly to the Z1 segment of the station’s truss, or backbone.

Satcher and Foreman also installed a set of cables for a future space-to-ground antenna on the Destiny laboratory and replaced a handrail on the Unity node with a new bracket used to route an ammonia cable that will be needed for the Tranquility node when it is delivered next year.

Destiny is the International Space Station’s primary research laboratory. It supports a wide range of experiments and studies that can contribute to health, safety and quality of life for people all over the world. The results of these experiments will allow scientists to better understand our world and ourselves and prepare us for future missions, to the Moon and Mars.

The Unity Node is a connecting passageway to living and work areas of the International Space Station. It is fabricated of aluminium and it is 5.5 metres (18 feet) long and 4.6 metres (15 feet) in diameter.  It has six hatches that serve as docking ports for other modules such as the U.S. Laboratory Module.

The Tranquillity Node, has being flown from Turin, Italy, on May 2009, and is slated to be installed on the International Space Station in early 2010. Tranquility will house a treadmill that NASA named the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill – or COLBERT.

The two spacewalkers also repositioned a cable connector on Unity, checked S0 truss cable connections and lubricated latching snares on the Kibo robotic arm and the station’s mobile base system.

A Missão Juno é a próxima missão que a NASA vai enviar a Júpiter e ao sistema joviano. A sonda irá penetrar nas nuvens da atmosfera joviana, procurando desvendar os mistérios da formação do Sistema Solar e, mais especificamente, de Júpiter.

A Juno será alimentada por painéis solares e irá mapear o campo gravitacional, os campos magnéticos e a composição da atmosfera. Estas medições serão conduzidas por radiômetros de microondas, magnetómetros, detetores de plasma, um espectómetro ultravioleta, um outro de infravermelhos, sensores gravitacionais e uma câmara a cores que transmitirá imagens para a Terra de cortar a respiração… A missão da Juno tem uma duração estimada de um ano, durante o qual a sonda completará 33 órbitas em torno de Júpiter.

O estudo de Júpiter é fundamental para a compreensão do processo de formação do Sistema Solar porque poderá explicar a formação dos gigantes gasosos planetários como Júpiter, Saturno e Úrano.

A missão não terá como missão estudar o fascinante satélite joviano Europa, com a intrigante possibilidade conter viva no fundo das fendas do seu extenso oceano de gelo, mas poderá contribuir para conhecer melhor o sistema onde se enquadra Europa e aumentar o conhecimento sobre a formação da nossa grande casa comum: o Sistema Solar.

Randy Bresnik y Mike Foreman durante el paseo espacial

Los radioaficionados cuentan desde hoy con una nueva antena en el espacio gracias a la labor de los astronautas Mike Foreman y Randy Bresnik, que concluyeron con éxito la segunda caminata espacial de la misión STS-129 del Atlantis a la Estación Espacial Internacional (EEI).

Ésta fue una de las tareas que acometieron durante las seis horas y ocho minutos que estuvieron en el espacio exterior y en las que también colocaron un adaptador al laboratorio europeo “Columbus”.   -—->>>  

La jornada comenzó a las 15:31 hora peninsular una hora más tarde de lo previsto, debido a que la pasada noche por segundo día consecutivo saltó la alarma de despresurización de la estación espacial.

Foreman y Bresnik tuvieron que salir de la esclusa de aire “Quest”, que prepara su sistema sanguíneo para prevenir problemas de descompresión, hasta que los equipos de control en la Tierra confirmaron que se trataba de una falsa alarma.

La comprobación de los sistemas duró unas dos horas y la NASA tuvo que reducir media hora la salida al exterior, lo que no impidió a los astronautas acometer todas las tareas que tenían en la agenda del día.

Durante la excursión extravehicular (EVA) Foreman y Bresnik tuvieron tiempo para instalar una antena sobre la viga principal para mejorar la transmisión de las cámaras de vídeo que llevan los astronautas sobre el casco. Además, reubicaran un dispositivo que registra el potencial eléctrico en torno a la estación y pusieron un gancho para adherir carga a la viga principal.

Momentos para el recuerdo

Ésta ha sido la primera salida al exterior de Bresnik, mientras que para Foreman será la segunda en esta misión y la quinta en su carrera profesional, ya que también participó en la misión STS del Endeavour en EL 2008.

Bresnik, que llevaba unas franjas discontinuas rojas en su traje para diferenciarse de Foreman, mostró su entusiasmo al traspasar la escotilla de la nave. “Aparte de cuando vi a mi esposa por primera vez, no creo que jamás he visto algo más hermoso”, dijo el astronauta cuando miró la Tierra a una distancia de 354 kilómetros. Para Bresnik este viaje es especial puesto que cuando vuelva a la Tierra conocerá a su hija, nacida durante su misión espacial. Bresnik y su esposa Rebecca son padres de un niño de tres años y medio de origen ucraniano, que adoptaron.

Ésta es la última misión que realizará la NASA este año a la EEI y será la penúltima que realice el Atlantis antes de que la agencia espacial retire el próximo año su flota de transbordadores -que completan el Discovery y el Endeavour.

La NASA ha enviado en el Atlantis 12.371 kilos de suministros para almacenar la mayor cantidad de repuestos y equipos en la estación, entre los hay dos giroscopios, dos infladores, dos tanques de nitrógeno y de amoníaco, además de varios experimentos.

La misión STS-129 tiene previsto una tercera y última salida el próximo lunes para colocar un tanque de oxígeno en la esclusa “Quest”, instalar dos experimentos para el estudio de materiales, y continuar con la conexión de cables para recibir el módulo Tranquility que llegará a la estación espacial en 2010.

La EEI, que orbita a unos 360 kilómetros sobre la Tierra, es un proyecto internacional en el que participan 16 países, entre ellos los miembros de la Agencia Espacial Europea, Rusia y Japón.

Omero ci dice che il concetto di bellezza e i canoni a cui si rifacevano i greci erano ben delineati e conosciuti con esempi e proiezioni che si tramandavano e si declamavano attraverso le invocazioni agli Deii simbolo di manifestazione rappresentativa di connotazioni e o particolari estetici riproducenti anche caratteristiche comportamentali.

La forma o meglio l’immagine degli Deii veniva a ed essere identificata anche con le prerogative caratteristiche della loro capacità di poter aiutare o malveare l’ essere umano.

Nel suo inno Omero ci tramanda una visione della bellezza femminile ben chiara.

Demetra ,nell’inno ,viene configurata come la Dea dalle belle chiome bionde, una Dea Augusta, quindi autorevole e con una corona portata sul capo, inoltre capace di dolore e rassegnazione davanti alla perdita della sua giovinezza, rappresentata dalla figlia Persefone, riacquistata poi attraverso l’accudimento del bambino da lei temporaneamente allevato.

Quindi la bellezza per i greci, o meglio per interpolazione  omerica, si manifesta in una donna seguendo  canoni estetici ben definiti.

Demeter una bella chioma bionda fluente, la figlia belle caviglie, la madre del piccolo, un ventre piatto e una vita sottile, anche dopo il parto, Ecate belle orecchie e  Persefone una voce altisonante, tenendo presente che le sue urla erano state udite proprio da Ecate, quindi capacità da parte della donna Persefone di saper gridare e manifestare  il disappunto innanzi ai sopprusi.

Inoltre il candore e la bellezza adolescenziale acerba e accattivante viene enfatizzato dai profumi e dai colori che devono essere colti e portati con se al fine di esserne orgogliosamente spavaldi davanti alla narcisistica adorazione di se.

Altre Dee sono chiamate a dare vita alla figura femminile  che veniva a rispecchiarsi nell’antica Grecia.

Queste erano Pallade ossia Athena e Artemidis, entrambe cacciatrici e donne battagliere ma pur sempre in evoluzione verso la maturità,

Quindi donne Dee che impersonano ognuna la totalità a cui deve tendere la bellezza femminile, la quale può sfiorire con l’età e con il suo avanzamento ma che  deve pur sempre seguire i cicli e la natura stessa della sua evoluzione.

Ci viene spiegato come l’abbandono della bellezza adolescenziale non avvenga mai scevro da una coercizione ma che pur essendo una cosa naturale non deve però subire la mortificazione di essere nascosta anzi tempo.

Le giovani  dovrebero mettere in mostra le proprie grazie e non nasconderle, ma farle uscire proprio come Persefone esce dall’oltretomba, accompagnata da Hermes, il corridore, la bellezza sfiorisce in modo veloce, ma la donna nella sua maternità e nel suo attaccamento al nutrimento universale cerca di divenire il polo,o meglio il  nucleo di unificazioni tra istanze estetiche diverse.

El mundo no terminará el 21 de diciembre de 2012, aseguró el lunes la agencia espacial estadounidense, en una curiosa campaña para intentar disipar los extendidos rumores alimentados por profetas del apocalipsis en internet y un próximo estreno de Hollywood.

La fecha coincidiría con una alineación de de los planetas del sistema solar, algo de mal augurio según la creencia popular.

El sombrío escenario se basa en afirmaciones de que el fin del mundo llegará cuando un oscuro “Planeta X”, también llamado Nibiru y presuntamente descubierto por los sumerios, choque con la Tierra

Si esa posibilidad de colisión fuera real, los astrónomos habrían detectado ese objeto “al menos durante la última década, y ahora sería visible a simple vista”, añadió. “Obviamente, no existe”.

Una colisión con nuestro planeta ya había sido anunciada por profetas para 2003. Desde entonces, la fecha fue postergada hasta el 21 de diciembre de 2012, que corresponde con el fin de un ciclo del calendario Maya.

La agencia subrayó que las colisiones catastróficas de la Tierra con cuerpos celestes son muy raras: la última se remonta a 65 millones de años atrás y se le atribuye la extinción de los dinosaurios.

Heboh kiamat yang akan terjadi di tahun 2012, sudah merebak kemana-mana. Dari obrolan kelas warung kopi sampai para pakar di NASA ikut bicara. Dari yang berandai-andai sampai yang sanggup menyajikan dukungan teori yang eksak. Lantas, apa yang dapat kita simak dari ‘kegaduhan’ tersebut?

Dilihat dari respon orang-orang terhadap topik hangat tersebut, menurut saya setidaknya ada dua hal yang bisa disimak,
pertama, adalah orang-orang yang dengan antusias alias berkeras menolak teori kiamat tahun 2012 itu. Karena ditinjau dari segi agama, tak ada satupun manusia yang dapat meramalkan dan menentukan tahun berapa akan terjadinya kiamat, apalagi sampai menentukan tanggal dan bulannya. Tentang hari H-nya, hanya Dia Sang Pencipta yang tahu, kapan Dia akan memusnahkan ciptaanNya. Sedangkan manusia? Boro-boro menentukan hari H-nya kiamat, jadual kereta api aja sering melenceng…..
kedua, adalah orang-orang yang dengan antusias ( sama antusiasnya dengan yang pertama diatas ) menerima terori kiamat. Dalam artian, entah mau terjadi tahun 2012 kek, entah 2 juta tahun lagi kek, entah 5 menit lagi kek, silahkan, welcome. Siap takut. Bahkan ada sementara orang yang berpendapat bahwa lebih cepat terjadinya ya lebih baik, karena toh kehidupan semakin hari semakin berat dan bobrok, makanya alangkah lebih baiknya kalau ‘ditiadakan’ sekalian, pasti deh bakal disambut dengan penuh sukacita……
Nah kawan, anda termasuk golongan yang mana? Pertama, kedua atau abstain? Jangan kawatir, you are not alone….
Semakin banyak isu-isu menghebohkan, semakin bagus. Setidaknya para blogger punya bahan untuk dijadikan artikel. Ya toh?

Last week it was ESA and Rosetta. This week, NASA had to go one up on the Europeans.

Waaaaay back in 2006, Cassini was able to image geysers shooting off of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. Since that discovery, the Cassini team has been able to swing the orbiting robot into a few really close passes to the moon.

A few days ago, they were able to capture this fantabulous shot!

FRANCE – Soirée du 5 novembre 1990 entre 19 h et 19 h 45.

A 19 heures, plusieurs milliers de témoignages venant des quatre coins de France et même d’Europe (notamment Londres) vont être reliés indiquant une observation massive d’un immense ensemble de lumières traversant de manière assez lente le ciel d’ouest en est. Diverses tailles d’ovnis furent aperçus, allant de quelques dizaines de mètres, de longues en forme triangulaires jusqu’aux probables vaisseaux mères de plusieurs centaines de mètres. En région parisienne, certains des employés des aéroports internationaux d’Orly et Roissy affirment avoir vu ce qu’ils décrivent comme étant un phénomène lumineux.  Ils en demandent alors confirmation au près des tours radar qui eux ne détectent absolument rien. Plus d’une semaine après le phénomène, le SEPRA continue de recevoir des appels de témoins désireux d’avoir des réponses sur ce qu’ils ont pu apercevoir. La NASA fait une réponse officielle le jeudi 8 novembre et affirme que pour le 5, il y avait eu la rentrée du troisième étage de la fusée soviétique Proton.

Ein Foto ist zwar an und für sich eine tolle Sache, aber manchmal reicht ein einzelnes Bild nicht aus. Zum Beispiel wenn man den Mars fotografieren will. Entweder knipst man ein Panoramafoto, auf dem ein großer roter Planet zu erkennen ist oder ein Foto mit einem Stein drauf, bei dem kein Mensch zuordnen kann, wo auf dem Planeten sich der Stein befindet.

Nun stehe ich eher selten vor der Aufgabe, den Mars fotografisch dokumentieren zu müssen. Jedoch die NASA. Die

Gigapan Technologie

hatte nämlich genau dieses Problem, als sie 2003 eine Sonde zum Mars schickten wollte. Das oben geschilderte Problem wurde gelöst und nebenbei eine tolle Erfindung gemacht: gigapan.

Bei einem Gigapan-Bild fotografiert eine Digitalkamera ihre Umwelt in vielen Bildern ab. Dabei geht die Kamera automatisch und systematisch von oben nach unten, verschiebt sich dann eine Spalte nach rechts, fängt wieder oben an zu fotografieren und geht die Reihe nach unten, dann wieder eine Spalte nach rechts, etc.
Am Ende werden die Einzelbilder zu einem einzigen riesigen Panoramabild zusammengesetzt. Dadurch kann man sowohl das große Ganze als auch Details erkennen, weil man in das Bild ganz nah hinein zoomen kann. Klingt kompliziert? Find ich auch. Schaut euch DAS mal an. Wahnsinn, oder??

Für Gigapan kann man jede beliebige Digitalkamera verwenden. Je besser die Kamera, desto besser das Resultat – aber theoretisch geht auch die 100-Euro-Aldi-Knipse. Um ein Gigapan zu bekommen, braucht man (nur) noch Gigapan-Epic, eine Plattform, die die Steuerung und Verarbeitung der Informationen übernimmt. Nicht ganz günstig, solch eine Plattform, aber unsere Uni hat sich ein solches Gerät geleistet. So bin ich nämlich in meinem Kurs „Writing and Producing for New Media“ überhaupt erst auf diese fantastische Technik gestoßen.

Und hier ist unser erster Versuch eines Gigapans von Hawaii zu sehen.

Nesse feriado de Zumbi teve “show” do N.A.S.A. no Circo Voador. E pra acompanhar a apresentação da dupla teve também os geniais Twelves e o irreverente Boss In Drama.

Cheguei la por volta das 23h e o Circo tava meio vazio. Estranhei um pouco, não entendi muito bem. Cerca de meia-hora depois os Twelves começaram a sua apresentação, sem fazer muito alarde, com meia dúzia de gatos pingados na pista. Eles pareciam até um pouco desanimados com a falta de gente. Mas o som que os caras lançaram, como sempre, foi excelente.

Aos poucos a pista foi enchendo, a galera chegando. Depois foi a vez do Boss In Drama. O cara é uma figura! Tem uma presença de palco muito legal, e fez um show muito bom também.

Em seguida, a atração mais esperada da noite, o N.A.S.A. Enquanto a produção dos caras ajeitava o palco, o Fatlip ficou lá em cima fazendo umas firulas, abriu seu Macbook e ficou gastando a onda, soltando um som pra ajudar a galera a passar o tempo.

Acho que por volta de 2h da manhã começou o N.A.S.A. O Squeek E. Clean muito louco gritando “Rioooooo” toda hora. Muito louca também a apresentação dos caras. Agitada pra caralho, botou a galera pra sacudir o tempo todo! E ao fundo umas projeções bem interessantes, feitas não sei por quem, que tinham trechos de filmes, clipes e documentários.

LONDON (Nov. 21) — Computer hackers have broken into a server at a well-respected climate change research center in Britain and posted hundreds of private e-mails and documents online — stoking debate over whether some scientists have overstated the case for man-made climate change.

The University of East Anglia, in eastern England, said in a statement Saturday that the hackers had entered the server and stolen data at its Climatic Research Unit, a leading global research center on climate change. The university said police are investigating the theft of the information, but could not confirm if all the materials posted online are genuine.

More than a decade of correspondence between leading British and U.S. scientists is included in about 1,000 e-mails and 3,000 documents posted on Web sites following the security breach last week.

Some climate change skeptics and bloggers claim the information shows scientists have overstated the case for global warming, and allege the documents contain proof that some researchers conspired to manipulate data.

The furor over the leaked data comes weeks before the U.N. climate conference in Copenhagen, when 192 nations will seek to reach a binding treaty to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases worldwide. Many officials — including U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon — regard the prospects of a pact being sealed at the meeting as bleak.

Within a decade, summers in the North Pole will be dramatically different: no ice and just an open sea. That is the prediction released Oct. 14 by explorers who have hiked through the area. Here, research vessels on an unrelated expedition break through ice near the North Pole in 2004.

A new report examines the human cost of climate change, which it said causes more than 300,000 deaths per year. The report, released in May, shows the impact of climate change on population displacement, malnutrition and diseases, such as malaria. “Climate change is not something waiting to happen,” said former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

In one leaked e-mail, the research center’s director, Phil Jones, writes to colleagues about graphs showing climate statistics over the last millennium. He alludes to a technique used by a fellow scientist to “hide the decline” in recent global temperatures. Some evidence appears to show a halt in a rise of global temperatures from about 1960, but is contradicted by other evidence which appears to show a rise in temperatures is continuing.

Jones wrote that, in compiling new data, he had “just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e., from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline,” according to a leaked e-mail, which the author confirmed was genuine.

One of the colleague referred to by Jones — Michael Mann, a professor of meteorology at Pennsylvania State University — did not immediately respond to requests for comment via telephone and e-mail.

The use of the word “trick” by Jones has been seized on by skeptics — who say his e-mail offers proof of collusion between scientists to distort evidence to support their assertion that human activity is influencing climate change.

“Words fail me,” Stephen McIntyre — a blogger whose climateaudit.org Web site challenges popular thinking on climate change — wrote on the site following the leak of the messages.

However, Jones denied manipulating evidence and insisted his comment had been taken out of context. “The word ‘trick’ was used here colloquially, as in a clever thing to do. It is ludicrous to suggest that it refers to anything untoward,” he said in a statement Saturday.

Jones did not indicate who “Keith” was in his e-mail.

Two other American scientists named in leaked e-mails — Gavin Schmidt of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, and Kevin Trenberth, of the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research, in Colorado — did not immediately return requests for comment.

The University of East Anglica said that information published on the Internet had been selected deliberately to undermine “the strong consensus that human activity is affecting the world’s climate in ways that are potentially dangerous.”

“The selective publication of some stolen e-mails and other papers taken out of context is mischievous and cannot be considered a genuine attempt to engage with this issue in a responsible way,” the university said in a statement.

In a talk marking the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species, a Nasa scientist said that Darwinian evolution will be the driving force of life anywhere in the universe, and we should use its predictions to decide where to look.

Dr John Baross, a researcher at the Nasa Astrobiology Institute, said: “I really feel that Darwinian evolution is a defining feature of all life.

“And so the limits of Darwinian evolution will define the range of planets that can support life – at least Earth-like life.”

Speaking at a public lecture at the Nasa Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, Dr Baross said that the Kepler Space Telescope’s mission, looking for Earth-like planets around other stars, made this an exciting time for astrobiology – the search for alien life.

He said: “I predict in the next five to ten years, we will make discoveries that will lead to theories and ideas at least as profound as Darwin’s.”

Dr Baross said that looking for alien life has always involved using the Earth as a model. While our understanding of how life began is incomplete, it seems clear that there are certain requirements.

All life on Earth needs water, carbon-based organic molecules, and an energy source, either solar or chemical. But alien life may not be entirely Earth-like. Dr Baross said: “I’d like to point out there are many different ways for non-Earth-like life to not use light or chemical energy but use some other form like radiation energy, wave energy, or ultraviolet energy.”

Similarly, the need for water may not be universal. Dr Baross said: “[Life may exist] in an organic solvent rather than liquid water on Titan, or… at temperatures of minus 100 degrees Celsius — there are a lot of ways to think of this because those conditions exist on other planetary bodies.”

So far, astronomers have found 403 “exoplanets” – planets outside our own solar system. While most of them are Jupiter-like gas giants hundreds or thousands of times bigger than the Earth, a few smaller ones have been found, and Kepler is expected to start finding many more over the next few years.

“I think all of us really believe that rocky planets, like Earth, are going to be found at some point,” said Baross.

More than 4,000 Caenorhabditis elegans worm were sent from the University of Nottingham to the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral.

They will spend 11 days in orbit more than 200 miles above the Earth, travelling 4.5 million miles, as part of a study on the muscle-wasting effects of space travel, the Times reports.

Known to scientists simply as C. Elegans, the species shares as much as 80 per cent of its genetic material with humans. Such similarities make it a reasonable laboratory model for research into human physiology.

Muscles do not have to work against gravity while in space, so they become weak. With astronauts destined to spend years at a time off the planet manning long-term missions to destinations such as the Moon and Mars, scientists are keen to establish how such degradation might be prevented.

“There’s a reasonable amount of variability in the muscle mass that’s lost due to space flight, with some losing 50 per cent, though on average it’s 5 to 15 per cent,” Nathaniel Szewczyk, of the university’s Institute for Clinical Research, told the paper.

“We need to figure out how we can deal with some of the medical problems associated with space flight, how do we deal with muscle atrophy and radiation? That’s what these worms will be helping us to do.”

The worms will be exposed to a drug that has been approved recently for use in preventing muscle wastage among cancer patients. The study is likely to pave the way for testing the drug on astronauts during future missions.

What exactly has Nasa found?
The equivalent of 24 gallons of frozen water, mixed in with the rock and dust that was thrown into the air when a rocket was deliberately crashed into a crater near the Moon’s south pole last month. It is far from the science fiction fantasy of an underground lake, but still pretty impressive for a satellite long dismissed as arid and dull.

Didn’t we know there was water on the Moon already?
Scientists have long suspected that there was water on the Moon, but have struggled to prove it. The sensors on orbital craft have detected evidence of hydrogen on the lunar surface, but the quantities were tiny. A major breakthrough came last September, when India announced that its Chandrayaan-1 craft had detected that chemical reactions producing water are still taking place.

Where does the water come from?
No one is certain. One theory suggests that hydrogen released by the Sun in solar winds could have reacted with compounds containing oxygen in the Moon rock, producing tiny amounts of H20. Another explanation proposes that the water came from vapour produced when comets and meteors crashed into the Moon’s surface.

What does this all mean?
Nasa has been so keen to find water on the Moon because it brings the dream of a permanent lunar base one step closer. If water exists in the quantities that Nasa now believes, it could be drunk by astronauts, turned into oxygen to make stations inhabitable and – most excitingly – converted into fuel. The Moon could then become the space equivalent of a service station – acting as a staging post for manned missions to Mars.
