Another year, another ARIA Awards, Australia’s “Grammys” recognizing Australia’s finest – except the winner of the breakthrough single and album Ladyhawke is a New Zealander and the winners of the best rock album AC/DC haven’t lived or worked in Australia for years and years and years. The crowning moment in Australia’s music year also left Australia’s finest playing second fiddle as the award ceremony producers put their energies into promoting the latest release from English superstar Robbie Williams

OK – Robbie Williams equals ratings. The Awards had moved TV network and there would have had to be a carrot to get Nine across the line. The networks aren’t exactly  jumping at the chance to present the ARIAs.

Ladyhawk and AC/DC’s wins are problematic. Where exactly do we draw the line? We’ve been lauding Kylie Minogue as an “Australian” recording artist for years, although in that very successful career she’s only ever recorded ONE single in Australia, the original version of ‘Locomotion’ that song then re-recorded by Stock-Aitken-Waterman for its international release. The year Natalie Imbruglia walked away with all those ARIAs who were the actual Australias who deserved to be recognized, who strived and excelled?  Natalie didn’t live in Australia, didn’t record in Australia, wasn’t managed by Australians. What was her contribution? But she’d once lived here.

I don’t want us to be ridiculously parochial about who or what is Australian, but the end result SHOULD be to reward and recognize those who have signed, recorded, produced or performed music for Australia during the year under consideration. The rest of the world is going to bow to Kylie and AC/DC. This is our chance to show the nation and the rest of the world what else we’ve got. Despite what I’ve said above, I  don’t have a problem with embracing Ladyhawke. She’s decided to base herself here. But then so did Ben Folds.

Empire Of The Sun deserve every accolade received – collected four gongs including Album of the Year, Best Group, Single of the Year and Best Pop Release for the band’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘Walking on a Dream’. Led by eccentric “genius” (I do not use the term lightly) Luke Steele it’s the latest episode in a career worth treasuring and protecting. Without success and recognition the shutters will come down on Luke and Australia may not ever again or not for a long time make outrageously ambitious music like this.

The irony is of course that former EMI CEO John O`Donnell was presumably sidelined by the global EMI for paying too much attention to his Australian catalogue, including Empire Of The Sun.

And, although, as I have said earlier that  Jessica Mauboy became the first Australian Idol artist to achieve more than statistical recognition at the ARIAs, Jessica Mauboy scored in only one of the seven awards for which she was nominated, Highest-selling Single. Doh!

Did this year’s ARIAs really reflect the year we’ve had in Australian music? Did it reward those who really excelled? Did it give hope to those who are waiting in the wings?

#164 – Natalie Imbruglia – “Torn” – (1998)

This one was terribly overplayed, unfortunately – to almost Aerosmith proportions. There were other singles, but none nearly as popular as this one – however fortunately or unfortunately that may be.

So, with innovation comes new ways of doing the things we used to do before–ways to make what you do faster and easier so you can quickly move on and do something else.  Unless that something is trying to download international music on iTunes in the US.  Even if iTunes in say the UK has the album that you are trying to download, apparently if you live in the US you don’t have access to those albums and hence you have to buy the actual physical imported CD.  And the only game left in town is Amazon.com–which is good but you still have to wait like a week for your music to arrive, and by the time you pay shipping and handling it costs you double what most other albums cost.  But, Natalie is worth it.  (This is where my friends and my wife start making fun of me.  I love you baby!)

Natalie took the alternative music world by storm in the late 90’s with Torn–and as that scene faded to the background so did she…in the US anyway.  But, with her 4th studio album she proves that she’s still a master at making the alternative pop music she’s always made.  From the super radio friendly Scars to the almost dance inspired Want to the funky first single (co-written with Coldplay’s Chris Martin) Wild About It she shows her range well on this album.  To put it simply, this album is exactly what her fans have come to expect from her–and why we love her music.  It is a more than solid addition to her catalog that stands up well with her other albums.

Not that likely you’ve heard her other albums if you live in the US though.  Left of the Middle, her first album which Torn on it, was a huge success world wide, but White Lilies Island, which was released in the US, didn’t sell well at all–which is probably why Counting Down the Days was never released in the US even though it reached number 1 in the UK and was among the 100 top selling albums of 2005.  I paid a lot for that one too.  And her greatest hits album.  But more on that later.

As mentioned previously, Chris Martin did help write Wild About It and according to the man himself that wasn’t the only one.  And it was rumored but now it has been confirmed that Lucas was left off of Coldplay’s recording sessions for Viva la Vida.  I almost can’t imagine the way it would sound played by them…almost.  Natalie release this album on her own record label-Malabar Records-and on Island records after departing from Brightside Recordings and it took her nearly 4 years to complete.  A time line that is nothing new for her fans that are used to her taking her time to get the music just right.  If you are familiar with her music at all–if you liked Torn back in the day, or maybe you remember Wrong Impression from the 2nd album, you should not only order this album immediately but you should also order Counting Down the Days with it because these 2 albums are not to be missed in my opinion–plus it might put you over the limit for free shipping on Amazon.com.

And, if there is any of chance that Natalie is reading this or someone who knows Natalie–you’ve still got fans in the US, so let’s get some US distribution!  Maybe I’ll even do it myself…if I had the money…or could get it.  Oh well, how about this:  I’ll keep spreading the good word and you can hook a brother up with music that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and physical space on a shelf to store?  No–Ok, just checking.  Worth a shot!

Natalie Imbruglia's Come To Life came out in the UK last month

Style: part folk-rocky Lilith fare, part hyped-up synth pop, with moments of extreme quirk

First reactions: When I blogged about Want, the lead single for Natalia Imbruglia’s newest album, I remarked that I was eager to listen to the full album. Want, a synthesized clubby piece, exhibits such departure for Natalie, whose style across the years has been characterized by soulful mid-tempo ballads full of strummy guitar lines, much like her mega-hit Torn. Most of the tracks on Come To Life are nothing like Want, however, and in some ways it’s like you’re listening to three different albums, smushed together. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it took some getting used to, Want being such an atypical (anti-thetical) teaser track.

Sounds like: early 2000s Natalie, with moments of Kylie Minogue and Coldplay (the tracks Chris Martin contributed to are pretty obvious)

Best/Middling/Worst tracks: It is tricky to qualify the tracks on Come To Life like I would on any other album, because it depends on which style on the album you are most inclined towards. I’m a fan of the Kylie-esque synth stuff, so my favorites are Want, Cameo and Wild About It. But honestly there is no one song on the album that I think is bad, though there are some tracks that aren’t to my personal taste. The various tracks accomplish different things, and I can see a large cross section of music fans enjoying it. That said, those who were hoping that Want signified a new direction for Natalie will be either happy or disappointed to hear that about half the album is still pretty typical of her style, especially All The Roses (a melancholy ballad, reminiscent of Shiver), My God and Scars.

The album version of Want is a real treat, as it is longer than the radio/video edit, and has some more complex orchestrations at the beginning and end, making it a more satisfying track overall. Thinking on how I feel about Want now that it’s been on my playlist for a month, I’d say my only criticism of it is that it feels somewhat truncated. The album version is a perfect answer to this. Cameo is Want 2.0, and like Want, it features a slinky synth base, and has a delightful playful, naughty tone. It’s Natalie’s most Kylie-esque track — there are definitely moments where you have to listen hard to distinguish the two.

Wild About It is a unique track on Come To Life; it is unlike any of the other songs, and generally unlike anything I’ve heard from Natalie. From the playful, clinky percussion line that runs through, to the punchy lyrics, underscored by a strumming bass, it’s a joyful track, that’s simply fun to listen to. Natalie recorded a video for the song this summer, though it wasn’t an official single. It’s cute, and make me like the song even more.

Then there’s the Chris Martin tracks, the most obvious of which is Fun, which could have been a Coldplay song if worked a little differently. Lukas and Want are the other two Martin-penned tracks, and you can definitely hear them going together. I would also throw Twenty in with this bunch, in that it has a similar whimsical pop quality, but Twenty is less “skipable” than I’m finding Fun and Lukas are on subsequent listens.

WYUT and All The Roses are in the “middling” category for me — I enjoy them, don’t skip past them to get to other tracks (they are surrounded by Want, Cameo and Wild About It, so that says a lot), but when I pull up Come To Life on my playlist I don’t go to them first.

Verdict: A good album with a few more promising potential singles, but I personally wish more of the album leaned in the direction of Kylie-esque pop. I’m kind of over the strummy guitar songs and the Coldplay stuff, but I know there are plenty of people for whom those aspects of Come To Life will appeal. You can actually almost split the album down the middle — tracks 1-5 are “old school” Natalie + Coldplay and tracks 6-10 have an edgier pop feel. Right now it looks like Want, Cameo and Wild About It are the tracks that, in a year’s time, I’ll still be listening to.

Chi parla è Natalie Imbruglia, Chris è Chris Martin, il leader dei Coldplay con il quale ha collaborato per il nuovo disco ‘Come to life’. “Lui è diretto fino alla brutalità: ‘Questa fa schifo, tagliala. Questa è grandiosa. Questa è da rifare’. Ci siamo messi lì a smontare e rimontare i brani daccapo. Il risultato è stato fantastico, – spiega la cantante al settimanale ‘Donna Moderna’, – ma io ho rischiato la crisi di nervi. Una volta non ce l’avrei mai fatta”.  

Rihanna premiata come donna dell’anno

Dal dolore alla creatività il passo è breve. Mentre scriveva il suo nuovo album, ‘Rated R’, Rihanna ha dovuto abbassare la guardia e trarre da un’intimità piena di dolore la forza di esprimere se stessa attraverso la musica. Il dolore è quello provocatogli dall’ormai notissima aggressione ricevuta dall’ex Chris Brown nel febbraio scorso mentre il disco è quello che uscirà il 23 novembre prossimo.  

“Normalmente sono una persona molto controllata e divento vulnerabile quando cerco di parlare di emozioni e fatti personali”, ha detto a ‘People’ la cantante 21enne, al gala tenutosi ieri sera a New York per i Glamour Women of the Year Awards, dove è stata premiata tra le donne dell’anno. Rihanna ha spiegato infatti che l’ispirazione per il nuovo album le è arrivata “dalle esperienze personali mixate con il rock e l’hip hop”. Dopo la sua dolorosa vicenda personale (quello di Brown fu un vero e proprio pestaggio, che le lasciò segni evidenti non solo nell’animo) la cantante ha deciso di parlare alle donne della necessità di non tollerare la violenza domestica per aiutare chi attraversa questo dramma. “Sono una donna, un essere umano. Ho attraversato una situazione reale che riguarda moltissime donne nel mondo ogni giorno. Ed è una bella cosa avere l’opportunità di dare voce a queste donne”.  

Nell’accettare il premio per la donna dell’anno, consegnatogli dalla modella Iman, Rihanna è arrivata sul palco con le lacrime agli occhi (“colpa della Pms (sindrome premestruale, ndr.)”, ha detto scherzando, prima di ringraziare gli amici, il suo mentore Jay-Z, sua madre e sua nonna. Settimo figlio senza Brad per Angelina?

Secondo alcune indiscrezioni, riportate dal magazine americano OK!, Angie avrebbe intenzione, dopo aver adottato bambini in Africa e in Asia, di far entrare nella sua già numerosa famiglia una bimba originaria della Siria. Ma stavolta senza l’appoggio di Brad Pitt. Una fonte ha infatti dichiarato che l’attore ha messo in chiaro quanto per lui sia già molto faticoso stare dietro a sei bambini e che non ha nessuna intenzione di averne un settimo: “L’idea di un altro figlio – ha spiegato il bene informato – sembra ridicola ma Angelina è determinata a completare la sua famiglia arcobaleno”. Not only Robbie Williams but Natalie Imbruglia is also back with a new album (at least on iTunes).

Throughout her career Natalie always sang such joyful and lovable songs.

With ‘Come to Life’ she stays on this way and I’m so glad about that. The album contains a beautiful selection of uplifting songs, great singing and an attractive cover image.

Ospite del format MySpace Secret Show, Natalie Imbruglia si è esibita il 5 Novembre ai Magazzini Generali di Milano.

L’occasione funge da showcase per presentare, in un’oretta di live, i brani del nuovo album Come To Life (di cui vi ho parlato QUI): la cantautrice si muove sicura nell’interpretazione (sempre pulita, ma mai davvero accattivante) del suo pop rock garbato, intrattenendo il pubblico con uno spettacolo all’insegna della semplicità. Alcuni brani funzionano così così, altri ci guadagnao (a partire dal singolo Want, decisamente pià coinvolgente eseguito dal vivo). Tutto piacevole, nulla colpisce davvero o lascia il segno.

Gli applausi maggiori, ovviamente, vanno alla manciata di hit del passato della bella australiana: Shiver,  Big Mistake, Wishing I Was There e la famosisima Torn, che ancora tutti cantano a memoria.

Non è propriamente un animale da palcoscenico la Imbruglia e il suo percorso ostinatamente in bilico fra le sue aspirazioni da cantautrice rock e un appeal evidentemente pop si rivelano un gran limite nella dimensione il live. Proprio perchè il suo show non può eccellere nè in una dimensione nè nell’altra: poca energia, impatto sonoro e credibilità per il rock, pochi lustrini, sfarzo e ammiccamenti per il pop.

Questa volta, i suoi occhioni blu perennemente sgranati…non scatenano l’applauso. Peccato!

Certo una puntata monotematica dedicata al Festival di Sanremo e con Valeria Marini co-conduttrice, non è esattamente il guizzo creativo che ti aspettavi per risollevare le sorti di X-Factor…ma questo ci tocca. Ed eccomi a commentare anche questo appuntamento numero 9. Spendo due parole su ogni concorrenti perchè ormai sono davvero pochi:

1. Silver, sarà pure tanto fresco e carino ma ricorda in maniera inquietante Gianni Morandi. E’ davvero incolore…tristezza.
2. Giuliano, lo sguardo da cane bastonato non aiuta…ed è un peccato perchè la performance vocale non è niente male. Un nuovo Fausto Leali (ne sentivamo l’esigenza, lo so).
3. Yavanna, questa settimana mi sono proprio piaciute. Peccato siano così discontinue e che il concetto di gruppo al femminile è qualcosa di non radicato nel pop italiano (fatta eccezione per le indimenticabili Lollipop, sia chiaro).
4. Chiara, è davvero strepitosa. E’ uscita indenne anche dal confronto impossibile con la divina Mina. Un talento….punto.
5. Sofia è un’altra invisibile. Solo che non ce la togliamo più dalle palle…quindi inizia ad essere anche molesta.
6. Marco, intenso ed emozionante. Arriva a scuotere l’anima e non è davvero cosa da poco. Meno che mai in un talent show.

Gli ospiti di questa settimana sono The Bastard Sons of Dioniso (che, per quanto lontanissimi dai miei gusti musicali, si confermano una delle realtà più interessanti usciti dalle passate edizioni di X-Factor) e la bellissima Natalie Imbruglia, a cui va tutto il nostro affetto per come ha sopportato il fastidioso Francesco Facchinetti. Al ballottaggio finiscono Chiara (roba da fantascienza…ce le avete le orecchie?) e Sofia: esce (grazie Mara Maionchi!) quest’ultima. Ho temuto davvero il peggio.
