In the era of digital music downloads, very few of us actually buy full albums anymore.  For a while now, I’ve used iTunes to purchase singles, or I’ve added them to my playlist on Playlist.com.  Not long ago, I read an interview with Tori Amos where she decried this trend of the digital music age, saying that when an artist creates an album, they’re really telling a story.  When someone pulls out bits and pieces of that story, they’re missing out on the experience as the artist intended.  I discussed this with a colleague of mine recently, who made the point that some musicians who are truly artists (such as Tori Amos), really are telling stories, while other musicians  (like Brittney or Lady GaGa) are just making singles.

In light of all of this, I’ve decided to stop buying singles and start buying albums again.  In fact, I may even buy the actual physical CDs instead of just downloading from iTunes. I can always rip the files later if I feel like adding them to my iPod.

So, in the spirit of listening to an entire album, I have made a list of albums I’ve purchased in the last few years that are great from beginning to end.  To be fair, there are several albums I’ve bought in the recent past that I really don’t like in their entirety, but it’s always a crap shoot.  Like anything in life, the best experiences follow risks taken.

Natalie Walker – Urban Angel: Technically “electronic,” but very mellow and really cool; her voice is amazing

Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos – The Dust of Retreat: Don’t let the name fool you; they are not bizarre or weird, just an indie pop band out of Indiana

Adele – 19: More commercially successful than a lot of the albums I’ve purchased recently, so this is not such a revelation, but it’s a truly spectacular album so it’s definitely worth a mention

The Kooks – Konk: This is an indie rock band out of England. Their music is super catchy and lots of fun – this album always puts me in a good mood

Rodrigo y Gabriela – Rodrigo y Gabriela: They are a guitar duo out of Mexico, and all the songs are instrumental. If that sound bizarre, give it a whirl anyway. At the very least, it’s cool background music for a summer party (margaritas optional)

You already know how I feel about the Trashcan Sinatras recent release In the Music, so I will not nag by mentioning it again here (even though it’s awesome). 

I am open to any and all recommendations you may have for me.

PS: I recently purchased Tori Amos’ new album Abnormally Attracted to Sin.  I am disappointed to report that I find it a little bit strange, but I’m trying really hard to give it a chance. I’m hoping it’s one of those albums that grows on you over time.

Hace un tiempo me leí los 11 volúmenes de Caballero Vampiro o Vampire Knight y la verdad es que me encantó, esa idea oscura de un romance con un ser que podrìa devorarte al tiempo de amarte es cautivante (jejeje) se que muchos dirían que quizás sea una forma enfermiza de verlo, pero es el sueño de toda mujer vivir una relación tan intensa que te consuma el alma de tanta pasión e intensidad….

Caballero Vampiro

Aunque todos ya conocemos la sinopsis de este manga shōjo de Matsuri Hino; debo mencionar que trata de sacrificios que a veces por diversas razones realizamos por aquellos a los que veneramos. Apostarìa que más de una quisieran ser Yuuki (ser capaces de encontrar un Kaname Kuran) ufff!!!! si existieran versiones de Kaname en la realidad, el tiempo de vida de las fèminas disminuirian en picada. Nos olvidariamos de respirar de tantos suspiros. Este manga por el momento se encuentra bajo publicaciones mensuales en Asia; por lo que aún nos queda mucho tiempo de Vampire Knight. Sòlo no desesperen por los nuevos volúmenes que dentro de poco nos sorprende esta fabulosa historia. Los volumenes los pueden encontrar en el blog de fantasymanga; el grupo de traductoras a cargo de VKnight.. Y para agregar el componente musical del manga les digo que he elegido una bellísima canción ”Waking Dream” de Natalie Walker el cual lo pueden encontrar en su Cd Urban Angel.

La primera vez que la escuche me sentì transportada por su dulce voz y sus tiernas letras; es por esto que considero que està acorde a Vampire Knight, juntos son una mezcla de Romance y Ternura, cualidades que nos derriten a tod@s. Espero que Disfruten de la lectura y de la música que les recomiendo en la noche de hoy….. Les dejo, puesto que mañana regreso a la faena laboral y un grato cigarrillo me està esperando.

- With You, de Natalie Walker. La petite fille de Chuck Norris paraît-il. Quoiqu’il en soit, elle est jolie, elle chante bien, et cette petite balade est vraiment très sympatique.

- Final Fantasy 6 Deadly Promise, trouvable sur l’excellent site Ocremix.org. Tout le monde a déjà joué au meilleur Final Fantasy qui soit je pense ( oui, le 6. Et oui, tout le monde. ), et bien entendu, tout le monde se souvient de cette scène hallucinante qu’est la scène de l’Opéra. Et bien un artiste a revisité la chose, en plus heavy, et ça donne ça. Miam.

With two solo albums under her belt, it’s clear that Natalie Walker is coming into her own. Like many of the other artists I’ve come across and blogged about in the HEARD segment, Natalie’s music has appeared on many of my secret TV vices like 90210, Smallville and The City. Her music is funky, elegant and all together beautiful and I am so glad I found her! Check out her Quicksand video from her first album, Urban Angel.

The last point on that list meant I found out that Rudimental’s funky tune “Sexy Sexy (All Up On Me)” which is errr rather sexy (Natalie your vocals are alot and I love your ‘fro), has made it onto one of them retarded “Best of Spring Winter Summer R&B 2009 volume 63″ compilations.

Marcus Nasty has been hammering this for weeks on his Rinse show (if you dont know about his show then fall back, go home, your parring yourself) and it should now get some deserved mainstream exposure, these are type of tunes to push the scene forward and ensure it will not be a flash in the pan, recording a nursery rhyme lyric with a musical chair dance over some jacked next riddim is not helping anyone.

Back to the tune in question, quite why its on an R&B compilation I don’t know (answers pon a postcard to usual address please) but alas never look a gift horse in the mouth and all that, so go find and buy.

Ganz im Ernst, ich habe absolut gar nichts gegen Pop. Der muss natürlich gut gemacht sein, dann passt das schon. Aber auf was ich da gerade via Twitter gestoßen bin, also so was ist mir dann doch zu viel. Es geht hier nicht um die Queen of Pop, aber die mehr oder weniger legitime Nachfolgern Britney Spears. Was die in ihrem neuen Video abliefert erinnert mich mehr an einen perfekten Plan, als an Musik. Es werden alle Register gezogen, die in einem Video zu ziehen sind. So hat sie natürlich ihre Nacktszenen, ohne jedoch wirklich etwas zu zeigen. Was dann aber doch um so deutlicher gezeigt wird, ist das Handy einer in Deutschland nicht skandalfreien Firma. Product placement in seiner scharmlosen Reinkultur. Wie dem auch sei, natürlich kann das Video nicht eingebettet werden, was mir auch eine Entscheidung abnimmt, die gar keine ist. Britney im meinem Blog geht einfach nicht. Was aber noch seine Erwähnung finden sollte, ist die Zahl der Viewer, die nach drei Tagen nur knapp die 1.500.000 unterschreitet. Comeback scheint zu klappen. Kommen wir nun aber zur Musik:

Ehre, wem Ehre gebührt

Am Telfon wurde ich gerade mit zwei weiteren Tipps versorgt, die zweifellos eine Erwähnung verdient haben. Fangen wir mit Natalie Walker (Homepage) alias Daughter Darling an. Hierzu gibt es zwei gleiche Meinungen, die ich seit heute auch für mich adaptiere. Als die Sängerin noch unter den Namen Daugther Darling musizierte, gefiel sie mir deutlich besser. Mehr dazu auch bei 78s, dort kann man sich auch einige Song anhören. Der Vergleich fällt leicht, hat sie schließlich zwei MySpace Seiten. Daughter Darlin und Natalie Walker.

Eines hat sie aber mit ihrer Neuausrichtung erreicht, ein Song wurde in der Serie Gray`s Anatomy untergebracht. Das bringt mich also gleich zur nächsten Künstlerin namentlich Esthero, die ebenfalls in der gleichen Serie ihre Öffentlichkeit finden sollte. Beide heben sich durchaus von dem herrschenden Einheitsbrei ab, und stehen in Punkto Klickzahlen auch deutlich unter der oben erwähnten. Daher nun schon mal zwei Videos zum reinhören und weitersagen. Verdient hätten sie es!
