John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars is a 2001 movie directed by John Carpenter. Starring Natasha Henstridge, Ice Cube, Jason Statham, Clea DuVall, Pam Grier, and Joanna Cassidy.

Plot: A story of human colonists on Mars who must be rescued after becoming possessed by vengeful Martian ghosts.

Production:

Although Mars has a day/night cycle almost identical in length to Earth’s, most of the movie is set at night. Mars is shown only once in the daytime, in a flashback when a scientist describes how she found and opened a “Pandora’s Box”, unleashing the alien spirits.

Much of the movie was filmed in a New Mexican gypsum mine. The pure white gypsum had to be dyed with thousands of gallons of biodegradable red food dye to recreate the Martian landscape.

As our first official post for TheCelebrityScoop.com, I’d like to start off with an absolutely stunning and horribly underrated actress that I’ve lusted for ever since her first big role in the 1995 sci-fi/horror flick, SPECIES. The ridiculously hot Natasha Henstridge has sadly been out of the spotlight for a while but our fellow partners in crime (the paparazzi) were present on the warm beaches of Malibu to catch a glimpse of this blonde beauty in a nice thong bikini. Depending on what body type you find sexy, you might drool over these photos or you might literally look away. I like a girl with a build so I’m happy to see these photos for sure. Now that this is a series (did you see the vol. II in the title?), I’ve really got stay on top of new music (which sometimes includes culture).

But first off, a quick thank you. Thank you to the LA Times for calling Grizzly Bear overrated! Nothing against the guys, but the music is really so-so. Granted, I still haven’t really gotten into Animal Collective either, who were the “it” band  6 months ago when “Merriweather Post Pavillion” came out. Nonetheless, LA Times’ overrated/underrated gallery claims Grizzly Bear and Zoey Deschanel overrated, Mad Men and Nine Inch Nails underrated. Heres’ the excerpt on GB:

OVERRATED

Grizzly Bear: We’re suckers for hearing the band of the moment, and the quartet’s new album, “Veckatimest,” is touted as this summer’s must-hear. Though the first single, “Two Weeks,” is an addictively airy confection, the rest of this ornate, harmony-rich album left us kind of cold. Each song is undeniably pretty but feels like an impossibly delicate construct, making us wonder whether there’s any blood underneath it all.

Now to the music. I hit up Rhino Records in Claremont last week and got some gems. Raided the uber cheap used section for some An Angle, Brandston, Eisley and a couple other randoms. Haven’t gotten to those yet.

The good stuff though was in the new Portugal. The Man and an album from a band I just started listening to: “The Meek Shall Inherit What’s Left” by Kiss Kiss.

Portugal does it again, with another great album. I can’t get enough of this band. Listened maybe three times through the new one (which has great artwork), and I’ll definitely approve. A more thorough review to come soon.

Kiss Kiss, which I have just noticed from checking out their myspace, has a concert scheduled in space. Yes, space. This could be completely untrue, but their tour schedule is claiming an appearance at the international space station in 2010. Somehow I doubt that, but hey I’d be down! This band has rich strings to complement some slightly avant-garde rock. The falsetto voice, slightly imperfect, is a great match and you can really hear the anguish in a few tracks. Pretty epic music, so I like it a lot. A bit like …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead or Vendetta Red.

Also checked out Spinnerette, a new group from former Distillers‘ frontwoman Brody Dalle. She’s the wife of Queens of the Stone Age front man Josh Hommes. Rolling Stone article here.

Also checked out War Tapes and Parachute at the listening stations. Stellar, but I’ll download.

Also bought 4 old school DVDs for $2.99 each: Johnny Mnemonic, Code 46, DeRailed, Species. My favorite so far (I’ve only watched Species and Code 46) is Species. Who knew that the blazing hot Natasha Henstridge walked around half the movie butt naked? Sexy, indeed.

Grand total? 4 DVDs, 6 CDs for $40. Not bad.

He thinks she set it up. After all, who irons naked and checks out their ass in front of a mirror? … What’s better than some good ole’ beirut? The Rose Alley Ale House is bringing beirut (pronounced bay-root) to New Bedford with an assist from USA Pub Pong. Aug. 11 is the date for the first beirut tourney at the Rose, located on Front Street. The fun starts at 9 p.m. with one of the owners saying he’s expecting somewhere around 20 teams to participate at either $10 or $20 fee per team. The winner will take home some cash. Check back at the bar’s Web site, www.drinkrosealley.com, soon for details and visit USA Pub Pong for official tournament rules. Depending on how successful it is, beirut could become a weekly event at the Ale House.  … Speaking of cups, happy 11th birthday to Massachusetts resident Steven Purugganan, the world record holder in sport stacking. Huh? Take 12 plastic cups and stack them 3-6-3, three on the bottom, six on top and top if off with three more. Sport stacking was originally made famous on the Tonight Show in the ’80s and Purugganan, who lives near Springfield in Longmeadow, can do it faster than anyone on the planet: 2.54 seconds. He’s been on the front page of the Wall Street Journal as well as Time and ESPN The Magazine. … How many of you saw Species when it came out in 1995? Not many I bet considering it’s kind of a weak science fiction movie about an alien trapped in a hot lady’s body. But it’s worth another glace 14 years later. The cast is decent with Michael Madson and Forrest Whitiker, and Natasha Henstridge’s boobs are just all over the place. Funny thing about Henstridge: She provided the voice for a substitute teacher in one episode of South Park, and the credits list her as “the chick from Species.” … Happy 32nd birthday to actress Jaime Pressly. Did you know that Pressly, who posed naked in Playboy twice, passed on the flight that crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11 because she didn’t want to take such an early flight? … Happy 35th birthday to actress Hilary Swank, who won an Academy Award for playing a boxer in “Million Dollar Baby.” Swank used to be married to actor Chad Lowe (younger brother of Rob Lowe who appeared in several episodes of the past season of 24) but they got divorced last year. She now bangs her agent.

Stan Lee will be a Comic-Con on Thursday introducing his latest project Time Jumper with Natasha Henstidge as the voice of the lead villain. ”Time Jumper’ is a little bit different than anything that I have done before,” Lee said as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “We think it is a brand new concept and something that could really be a winner.” For the Full Story, click: TIME JUMPER

Last Sunday I went for a hike on the trail in my neighborhood and had two celebrity sightings.  One was Ed Begley Jr. (I actually heard his voice and knew it was him before I saw him, proof that I really do watch too much TV).  The other was Natasha Henstridge.  It was a strange coincidence that I saw her, since just days before I had read this article:

In person, I was struck by how unbelievably gorgeous she is, completely dressed down in workout clothes and without a scrap of make up.  When I first read the article, I actually felt sympathy for her. She looks so big in the pictures, especially when compared to images of her from the 90s or even a few years ago when she was so much thinner.  In person, she looks to be maybe a size 8 (ever since I worked at the Gap, I have the gift of guessing someone’s size just by looking at them; it is a ridiculous skill to have).  Why am I feeling sympathy for someone who is 5′ 10″ and a size 8? Isn’t that healthy?

Even though the headline hints at anorexia, my first thought was that she looks great and I felt jealous because I’m not as thin.  Is that wrong?  I am also an arguably healthy size for my height.  I eat lots of fruits and vegetables, drink water all day, stick to low fat foods and work out 3-4 times a week.  I know that I will not be any thinner unless I do something drastic to my routine, like stop eating entirely.  The thought has crossed my mind.

I’m always somewhat torn on the whole “Thinning of Hollywood” argument.  On the one hand, I get it.  I had the opportunity to be at an industry party a few years ago; it was as though I’d walked into my TV set. Almost any actor you can think of from film and television was in the room…and I’ve never felt so terrible about myself in my life.  People who seem reasonably “curvy” on TV are stick figures in reality.  The camera may add more than 10 pounds.  Are these women really just perpetuating unhealthy body image amongst the youth (and in my case, not so youth) of society?  But when I hear people go on about ridiculous weight and beauty standards for women, I usually end up thinking ”Are these just the rantings of the overweight and unattractive?”  Is that sentiment in itself proof that these unreasonable standards have permeated the subconscious of men and women alike?

In general, I think it all comes down to perception and influence.   My own insecurities could stem from living in Los Angeles, where the ratio of beautiful people to normal people is much higher than other places in the country (except maybe New York).  But I really don’t feel like moving.

PS:  The Daily Mail is not my only source of news, and I actually don’t read tabloids besides this one. But I think that, if you must read tabloids, the British rags are the way to go. They’re wonderfully judgemental and entertaining.

Experts quickly conclude there will be no lasting ramifications. Then strange anomalies begin to manifest themselves on Earth. It’s a race against time as the two celestial bodies are drawn closer and closer to impact.
