I was lucky enough to get Psoriasis when I was 13 years old. I think it started in my scalp, then continued down around and in my ears, then some of my face, before it settled nicely on my elbows, knees, ankles and spots here and there on my legs. If you have never heard of Psoriasis before or don’t really know what it is, it s a skin condition caused by a hereditary predisposition or gene. It might lie dormant for years without any symptoms before it decides to come out in full bloom. What really happens to your skin is an overproduction of skin cells, so you are left with way to many cells to cover you skin as per normal, and the leftovers starts forming scales. The scales itch, falls off and leaves you with sore, thin and pink skin. Hurray! Anyone who has just hit puberty would love to have itchy, scaly skin, right? Lucky girl I was!

Well, not quite. Unfortunately there is not much you can do about Psoriasis and the researchers and scientists are still scratching their heads to figure out how to stop it from happening. I don’t trust scientist, and after years and years of going to doctor after doctor giving me steroid creams, I decided I don’t like doctors either. So I stopped using the creams. They don’t work that well anyway and you just end up getting immune and you need stronger creams. And so on. Now you are probably wondering why I am telling you this? Having had Psoriasis for more than half my life, I have tried many, many things to get rid of the symptoms and have beautiful, non-scaly skin. You have already heard my banana-peel story, I tried shots of Aloe Vera every day, I tried bathing in salt water in my bath tub and I tried any other miracle cure I heard of. Nothing really helped that much, and as soon as I stopped using it, the psoriasis flared up again.

Picture from here

As the years has gone by, I have really started to understand that we are what we eat. Like seriously, the food we put in our mouth is the building blocks of our body; bones, skin, teeth, eyes and brain. When we eat certain things, we feel strong and energetic and when we eat other things, we might start sneezing. When living with Psoriasis, there is a very long list of things you should avoid eating to get better. I will share a list of to do and not to do with you. This may not be that interesting for people without Psoriasis, but it might be worth a try even if you have a different skin condition. This is the only diet I have ever stuck to, not for the reason to lose weight, but to clear my skin. And it actually worked. If you know anyone with Psoriasis who would benefit from this, please share the link with them!

Usually there is one major primary trigger that activates the Psoriasis the first time, such as hitting puberty, injury or infection, stress, anxiety or taking certain drugs. When you have it, there are secondary triggers that makes it worse. Below is a list of what you should avoid if you have Psoriasis;

High intake of tomatoes, chillies, capsicums, curries, citrus, berries, pineapples, kiwi fruit, peas, soft drinks (carbonated), chocolate, cakes, ice cream (any sweets), tea, coffee, pork, red meat, sausages (processed meat), potatoes, alcohol (red wine and champagne are the worst), smoked fish, smoked/processed meat, lentils, ALL dairy products, vinegar, additives, tomato sauce and salt.

Stay away from emotional stress and worry. Get help with anxiety. If you have an overactive mind, this may release stress hormones and work in the same manner.

Stay away from chemical exposure. Always wear gloves when cleaning the house. Don’t smoke. Don’t dye or perm your hair. Try to avoid paint, insecticides and don’t wear anything with nickel.

If you are constipated, have diarrhoea or IBS, get help for this.

Now you might wonder if there is anything left to do or eat. There is a few pointers of things you should do and should eat too:

Drink plenty of water, my opinion on water here - at least two litres a day.

Eat lots of green vegetables such as spinach, beans, snow peas, broccoli, celery, lettuce, watercress, chinese greens and the list goes on. If it’s green, it’s good!

Try Yoga or Meditation if you are stressed or have an overactive mind.

In addition to this things such as plant pollen, yeast, hot showers, cold weather, central heating and air condition may make the Psoriasis worse. I find mine is at its worst when I am in Norway in winter, where it’s freezing outside, warm inside with the fire burning, I am eating more cheese and chocolate than I normally would and probably drinking more wine than normal too. I followed the above strictly for 3 months, eating a shed load of green vegetables a day, fish or chicken as my protein and lots and lots of green salads. It was hard at times, but my skin was clearer than it has been for 15 years. Finally I had soft elbows (I did almost start to cry!!). When I started reintroducing foods on the ‘no’ list, a few spots came creeping back, but now I know how to manage it. I also found an all natural cream that works really well with Psoriasis skin. I will tell you more about that later.

In the world of Psoriasis I actually have to consider myself lucky, as I have the drop-type (guttate) of the condition that doesn’t get as thick as many other types. I guess I can consider myself lucky for being generally health conscious as well, and trying to keep it under control with what I eat. If you have Psoriasis and would like to know more about how I treat mine, please contact me (you find my contact details in the Contact box above) or if you have a simple question leave a comment below. Even if you don’t have the condition yourself, I hope you did learn something new today

PS; I didn’t put any pictures of Psoriasis skin, if you wish to know how it looks, please use Google.

Thekkady has one of the largest wildlife sanctuary in India is a dream destination. The Country’s sole Tiger reserve, Periyar, with its bountiful treasures of tropical flora and fauna is the ultimate reservoir of many an endangered species and a rich tribal culture.

The most popular activity that a tourist can enjoy in Thekkady is boating in the Periyar lake. One can see the wild animals along the bank of the river foraging, bathing, drinking and resting. It would be a greater fun if one is lucky enough to see the elephants playing with their babies in the lake.

What grounds you?

For me, having roots and a strong identity entwined within a past that continues to live through my very breath nurtures the constancy of my soul. To belong without question – as a birthright – keeps the blood flowing in the right direction, so to speak. Yet setting out to find words which describe ties to our ancestors and to our natural world is not an easy endeavour.

Searching for passages that convey the depth of these ties was, therefore, challenging. Found renditions of rarely expressed thoughts are sometimes incomplete, superficial, and occasionally prosaic. Depicting thoughts into words which capture our correspondent intentions is not an easy undertaking, particularly when we want to concisely communicate the profound and the complex. Fortunately, it was not an impossible feat for I happened upon this moving message:

“I am of the same spirit as my ancestors, indestructible and free. It is this same indomitable spirit that connects me to the eternal strand woven into all of creation, animated by its divine Source, regardless of time, matter and space. I am the container of the past, the present and the future. I am part of the tree of transcendence. I live with its roots embracing the earth, I am one with its branches merging with the sky. And together with the rest of my Kapwa, we shall unravel the promise of freedom, whether fighting for it in the streets of EDSA or Egypt, or realizing it in the deepest frontiers of the inner self, and in the realms beyond.”

by Mila Anguluan-Coger (“Reflective weavings on my inner banig” at http://www.babaylan.net/wordpress/category/babaylan-and-community-healing/)

The eloquent passage above could not have better explained that feeling of being one with that from which we sprung and with those from whom we inherit our selves. Thank you, Mila, for making this feeling known to consciousness. Such feeling of connectedness is a gift that has been lost in a realm where logic and reason reign. The unexplainable is easy to dismiss. And yet, during those moments of connection — we know, KNOW — a priori, that the experience is real.

Further gratitude to Perla Daly who created a mandala that symbolically synthesizes the same subconscious non-verbal connections with magnificent vibrance, as seen below. Those who are interested in purchasing her work can follow the appropriate links to order on her website at http://bagongpinay.org/bmandala/

The day I have been waiting for! My first bodybuilding competition was on Saturday. INBA Perth Class

The day I have been waiting for! My first bodybuilding competition was on Saturday. INBA Perth Classic 2013.
I was in Bikini division, tall class.

So my day went a little like this;

The night before I got a base tan done and slept in it – the darker the better!

Early morning we got up and tan the dogs, packed the car and headed off.

Its a 300km+ drive to Perth for us and we were running late so it was a bit of a rush. Gavin drove the first 150kms so I could rest, then we stopped and he got some lunch. Filling the car with the smell of meat pies! Damn it, I was hungry. So I drove the other half of the way.

We arrived at our accommodation and it was late. I needed to have quick shower so I used the shower in a friend (and fellow competitor) ‘s room. I didn’t have time to unpack my things so we just showered and ran.

Next was my stage tan, at first I didn’t think it was that necessary but Im so glad I got it done. It made me look so much leaner, muscular and ready.

After my tan , which was really cold going on…. I stood in the park in the sun for a bit so I was super dry, then we headed back to the hotel. My friend got our room ready which was super helpful, this was the view.

Really lovely place!

My lovely hair and makeup girl, who is an old friend from high school was waiting when we got there and as we were running late she had a big job to do!

In a short period of time she had me looking show ready with flawless skin, big hair and sexy eyes.

We headed off to the venue, at first getting lost but luckily still arriving 10 mins early.

It was all go! As soon as we got in the door I went to the competitors room and Gav (boyfriend) and Kat (hair and makeup/friend) went to find a spot to watch.

In the competitors room there was so many people from all different divisions, doing tan touch ups, pumping up for stage, eating and getting ready.

Its all very exciting, Sami (friend/figure competitor) and her partner Adam had a spot ready for me which was handy to put down my bags of stuff!

First up the bikini girls had to do a mock run through which was helpful, before we lined up backstage ready for the show to start.

Short class was on first, then us, Bikini Tall Class!

It was so nerve racking and I kept chatting to the girls about their trainers, coaches, gyms, lives. It was great to meet so many lovely people.

It was time! We filed out in order and lined up on stage, wow, so many people, the lights are super bright and its really full on. One at a time we come to the front of the stage, do 4 quarter turns and return to the back, in line.

After running through all the girls, the judges call forward a few girls at a time for comparisons, this means more quarter turns with 2-4 other girls at the front of the stage, then they will do the same with the other girls before we reform a line and leave the stage.

We are called out for presentations we line up at the front of the stage. They tell us that the finalists will be called and should take a step back. OMG ’16′ is called! Thats me! I couldn’t believe it! Once the three finalists are called, the rest of the competitors get their medallions and bags and leave the stage. Now its trophy time!

Aaaaaaand 3rd place goes to………
Number 16, Vanessa Carley!

I was so happy!!!!!!

I have never won anything before, never placed, I don’t have a medal, trophy or ribbon for anything. Now I do!

I am so proud, 14hr days, no coach, living in the country and my first comp, I got 3rd!!!!

Anyway, that night I ate chocolate (before the above photos actually) and I had my first alcoholic drink in over 12 months.

Now I have some diet and workout changes to make, Ill talk more about that soon.

Thanks for all your love and support

The Qi beauty facial is unlike anything in the beauty world, this is undeniable. Unique in its approach to ageing, and difficult to communicate the experience with mere words, allow me to take you on a journey of Qi. Imagine you are lying draped, surrounded by the organic aromas of patchouli, sea buckthorn, calendula, rosewood, nerolina and a gentle breeze carrying Australian bush flowers across your face in a spritz to prepare you for the experience ahead.

Qi beauty Facial Treatment

The first of specifically designed 1000 gold Qi micro-magnets is placed onto the face to stimulate deep meditation, this is where your journey begins. For a moment you feel so far away, yet aware of the gentle rhythm of the Qi matrix, created at the hands of your Qi therapist. As your mind and body is reconnected with Qi, your skin becomes alert and more receptive as deeper layers are realigned to accept the positive stimulation of the Qi micro-magnets. Qi beauty takes this opportunity to feed skin the nutrients it needs for health, correcting deficiencies caused by daily exposure to free radicals.

The energetic properties and nutrients contained within the natural Australian products applied generously have been hand selected for their calming and soothing properties. A favorite is Qi beauty’s pure Seabuck Thorn Oil. Containing over 190 nutritional compounds, we call it a superfood for skin. The 1000 gold Qi magnets are efficiently threaded along the acupuncture meridians over your face to connect Qi beauty’s essential 12 point matrix and create a network of Qi for energy. Simultaneously your Qi beauty practitioner is applying exquisite blends of nutrient rich food for skin. By now, you are in a deep state of relaxation, and encouraged to maintain this peaceful state throughout your facial treatment.

Whilst you drift between the aromas of Australian botanicals and bush flower essences, your skin is rendered energetic by your personalized Qi beauty micro-magnet matrix, altering the behavior of deeper skin layers to allow biologically occurring compounds to repair skin as they once did. This is the activation process. Awakening your skin and assisting natural repair with Qi activation and nutrient rich formulas. With every facial treatment, your Qi beauty practitioner will adapt your facial treatment matrix to continuously improve skin condition, appearance and work to correct deficiencies caused by free radicals.

The success of Qi beauty’s signature gold facial has let to the creation of the ionic skincare and ActiV88 serum formulas now available around Australia by certified Qi beauty therapists. The Qi beauty facial is available in New Zealand at the Langham Hotel known as the ‘Ming’ facial and Patrice Hardy Acupuncture Clinic. Qi beauty is soon to expand into Canada, where the treatments offered by Qi beauty international have been recognized in the natural health industry for its honest approach to natural age control, providing women a real solution to the affects of ageing caused by Qi deficiency.

Qi beauty distinguishes themselves in the beauty industry through their integration of magnetic energy and minerals in their products. Using clinically tested magnets, at a specific gauss not to alter skin pH, but to encourage balance and stability, Qi beauty has created an age control solution with the support of science, essence of nature and philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

(Almost) Everyone knows how important it is to wash their hands… Washing hands from time to ti

(Almost) Everyone knows how important it is to wash their hands…

Washing hands from time to time throughout the day is a good idea for many reasons.

It is normal to assume soap is harmless, right? I mean really… it’s just soap. What could possibly be in it?

If you look at the back of most soap dispensers you will see a pretty lengthy list of chemicals. Yeah, yeah… I know. I’ve already lectured about these ingredients in other posts so I will cut to the chase.

My advice as always is to seek out a natural soap with ingredients that are not harmful, but I want to point out one of the WORST ingredients that you might be exposing yourself to every single day:

What is it?

Triclosan is an antibacterial compound that was used primarily in hospital settings, but has been mainstreamed into every day household and personal care products over the last decade. It is most often seen in soaps, cleaners, deodorants and hand sanitizers. Its job is to prevent bacterial growth.

Why is this a problem?

First of all, it isn’t necessary. The FDA says it is no more likely to prevent illness than good old soap and water. Second, it isn’t good for human health or the environment. It can disrupt hormone levels in people, especially the thyroid. Through wastewater, it ends up in lakes and streams, where it is extremely toxic to aquatic life! Over time, it also creates bacterial resistance to antibiotics, which encourages superbugs.

What can we do about it?

STOP USING IT.

Next time you buy hand soap, household cleaners or personal care products, read your labels! If a product is ANTIBACTERIAL, there is a good chance it contains Triclosan.

Most hand soaps have some pretty toxic ingredients in them. I have 2 kids and we are constantly washing our hands. For the amount of times we are exposed to soap each day, it is important to be picky about the ingredients.

I couldn’t find a natural hand soap that met my standards without breaking the bank.

MAKE YOUR OWN.

It is a piece of cake and dirt cheap!

Where can you purchase these ingredients?

Dr. Bronner’s Castille Soap – Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Whole Foods, Amazon

Essential Oils – Whole Foods, GNC, Vitamin Shoppe

Dispensers - I have glass ones like this in my kitchen and bathrooms.

Before the glass I bought and refilled Method foaming soap bottles.

You can also find some on Amazon!

ENCORE:

If you use hand sanitizer, skip the Triclosan and use an alcohol based one such as EO Essential Oil Organic Hand Sanitizer Spray. I always keep one of these in my bag.

I am a very scary person. So, when major events occur I think the worst. Like with everything that has been going on I have come to the assumption that 2012 wasn’t the end of the world, but the beginning of the end. I mean all the crimes and terrorism, Boston Bombing, Sandy Hook, Batman Theater Shooting, Sikh Temple, war threats (Korea, etc), and even the three scandals. Plus, natural disasters the recent flurry of tornadoes, Hurricane Sandy, tons of others I don’t remember. I have also had quite a few deaths around me since the toward the end of 2012. Even my friends have each had at least had 2 deaths around them. Now, if you were as scary as me your first assumption is “Damn,we are all slowly going to die!” Even if it isn’t the end I sure as hell believe its the end of the world as we know it. Oh yeah, and economy lol.

Well let me just start off by saying this is an amazing week for me!! Friday is my last day of sophomore year!!! WOO HOO!! I am SOOO excited. This Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I have a half-day at school for finals. I am ready for summer!!

ANYWAY, my 16th birthday is coming up on Monday. I don’t want to do anything big, because thats just not me. Well, my parents surprised me with an amazing present. THEY BOUGHT ME TAYLOR SWIFT TICKETS!!! I get to see Taylor Swift in concert the day after my birthday!! Crazy right?! I literally started crying when they showed me the tickets. And after this long stressful year, I don’t think I could ask for anything better.

BUT, my dad told me he’s getting me an iPhone also!! And no, I’m not some spoiled brat. I actually never ask for anything, and I do all my chores around the house 24/7 without being asked. I’m a very responsible teenager So thats my amazing surprise this week. IM SO HAPPY!!!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week so far! Comment down below!

I love beets. Always have. Some things we hate as children and just grow into them, but beets and I have always been cool with each other. As a child I used to eat them raw, plucked right from the ground. All you need to do it peel back that outer layer and feast on the inside. Yesterday at school I did just that – walking around, peeling off the skin, and taking bites out of the raw beet. It seemed completely natural, and only after the third or fourth comment from a classmate did I realize that not everyone feels the same.

Let me just say that beets are wonderful for you, they’re high in important vitamins and minerals like potassium, magnesium, fiber and phosphorus, as well as Vitamins A, B & C. Beets are also such a versatile vegetable, while some are grown for the root portion, others are grown for their greens!

While the variety on the left produced a beet, neither of these are grown for the root portion. These came from Birds and Bees Farm!

Beet greens can be braised, sauteed, juiced or even turned into chips! I followed the same technique as with kale chips and they came out a great tasting crunchy snack. (Every time I make beet chips in the oven it reminds me of just how much I wish I had a dehydrator!)

If you’re not a beet fan, or haven’t given them a good enough chance, I hope that I have encouraged you to do so!

We had a rather eventful week. We delivered our first sale to a restaurant. We harvested our first CSA shares. The first shares were not as full as we would have liked them to be, but we had enough for everyone to have several varieties of vegetables. Here in the next couple of weeks, I anticipate some pretty abundant harvests. Unfortunately the business that agreed to be our Monday pick up/drop off location was closed a couple of days before our first CSA hares were due to be dropped off. We had to scramble to make arrangements with everyone about getting ther shares, and have yet to find a permamnent solution. We have also been battling pests. Flea beetles, white flies, and cabbage worms are present. We’ve done a lot of picking and squashing, but had to pull out the reinforcements by using kaolin clay and diatomaceous earth. As far as cabbage worms go, I check the cabbages every day, picking and squishing when the camouflaged creatures give themselves up with their giant munch holes. Other than that we have been quite busy with normal farm procedures like prepping, planting, seeding, watering, weeding, thinning, and turning compost. The storm last night tore the cover off of our small greenhouse. Considering that is the worst thing that happened after the damage done in Oklahoma this week I am left quite blessed. Our hearts go out to all of those affected.

This recipe takes me back to childhood. My grandmother used to make this all the time. I generally use balsamic vinegar instead, but this would be just as good.
