tuck you Even though I liked the first game, the only thing I remember about it is Drake’s sweater;

tuck you

Even though I liked the first game, the only thing I remember about it is Drake’s sweater; it took quite a beating and still managed to have part of its hem caught on his belt. I also remember the Nazi submariner occupied by those men-creatures. Ooh, and I remember the final boss, Rico QTE.

Uncharted 2 is perhaps the only game where I can easily switch between – and enjoy, with satisfying rewards – the three approaches to combat. I can sneak around for stealth skills, squeeze the trigger or throw ow punchies. Like the rest of the game these transitions are fluid, with no added complexity to the button presses, and each approach has its benefits. With most game you’re provided a handful of ways to take down baddies yet the majority are superfluous so you end up performing the easiest one because it usually turns out to be the most efficient. In Uncharted 2 you can start off with stealth kills to lessen the baddie numbers, you can melee to conserve ammo, and you can go iron sights or fire blind. All of these are easy to perform, and each one pretty much has the same damage output; given you go for headshots, all the above approaches are one-hit kills.

The other half of Uncharted 2’s gameplay is just as entertaining. The jumps are easy to pull off, and missing one comes with barely noticeable load times and a respawn not too far away from the misstep.

gimme

The writing and performances – just as much fun as playing the game. The story is typical Baddie wants power, one man to save the day. But whatever. Execution is what’s important, and Uncharted 2 is a great escape. The banter between Drake and whoever happens to be the companion at the moment are enjoyable – like when you jump into the pool on the hotel roof. And not having the controls taken away from you during these moments are pluses. Not all conversations need to live in cutscenes.

Uncharted 2’s greatest strength is its pacing. The pattern is platforming-gunfight-platforming-gunfight. Both types of gameplay put you in interesting scenarios, mainly because the set pieces are fun to navigate and shoot through. A scene in particular: the first time you and Elena are alone. You have to jump on a post that consists of multiple signs pointing in different directions, and as you hang, baddies start pouring in from adjacent rooftops. Cover consists of the signs, where you have to constantly shuffle over and strafe to deal with the baddies coming from various directions. And this is also a great example of the game teaching you two different mechanics and combining them to give you a novel scenario; at this point you’ve already been platforming on signs, and obviously you already know how to fight. And it’s never repeated again, which makes the sequence stand out even more.

Another is a chase scene where you have to jump from truck to truck. In the hands of less proficient developers, you would be told which truck to jump on and when. For this game, your indicator is the truck on fire, and the truck you’re supposed to escape to, well, you better be looking in the right direction. It’s a frenetic sequence that doesn’t slow down to hold your hand.

And while the last boss was neither astounding or dull, at least the game ends on a humorous note – I can’t remember how the first game ended which most likely means it was either unimpressive or not offensive enough.

Actually, Uncharted 2’s last boss was a yawn-fest. The running sequence that follows – much more exciting. And it wasn’t even a QTE.

Intro

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a Playstation 3 exclusive developed by Naughty Dog that was released on October 13th 2009. Naughty Dog was previously behind the Jak & Daxter series for the Playstation 2 and of course Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. Like its predecessor Uncharted 2 is a third person action adventure puzzle solving game. It takes place after the events of Uncharted and again follows the adventures of Drake as he journeys off to explore remote lands like the lush forests of Borneo and the snow-covered mountains of Tibet in search of the lost treasures of the Marco Polo voyage.

After the universal praise Uncharted has received can Uncharted 2: Among Thieves live up to the hype and be that blockbuster title for the Playstation 3? Continue reading to find out.

Single Player

First off let’s get this out of the way since I am sure you know by now that Uncharted 2 is an amazing game and an enjoyable experience down to the very end. Naughty Dog took a model proven to be successful and improved on almost every aspect of the game.

All of the traditional gameplay mechanics like the gun play, puzzle solving and controls are back but have been revised to perfection. The gun play has been focused and no longer feels sporadic, the puzzles are better integrated into the story and the controls for grenade and melee kills have been refined. The combat is now a highlight with the new revisions and the inclusion of an effective stealth mechanic. But not to worry this isn’t simply Uncharted 1a.If you had a complaint with the first Uncharted its safe to say Naughty Dog has addressed and fixed that issue.

All of this is highlighted by the remarkable visuals which left me at times awe-struck by the beautiful vistas and finite detail. The variations of these environments were a breathe of fresh air, each meticulously filled with the right amount of light and color. The attention to detail doesn’t stop there as the audio including the voice acting and soundtrack was also top-notch. I don’t think I have ever played a game that was so fluid and natural from the plot progression right down to the character development. The attention to detail put forth in every aspect of the game truly makes this title stand out.

This detail kept me focused and in tuned with the game but more importantly the story. While the treasure hunting story may be generic it does have a few major plot twists but it’s not so convoluted or far-fetched that you lose interest, quite the opposite. While it wouldn’t hurt to play the original if at least for some character development the story for Uncharted 2 does stand alone.

One of the best parts of the game in my eyes is the distinct characters and their interactions with each other as well as their reactions to events. The dialogue is organic and was chosen to develop the characters and their relationship first then the story. The unique actions expressed by the characters felt real and were natural not to mention genuinely funny. The voice acting was done extremely well allowing the character to come alive on the screen making the game even more enjoyable and believable. The characters and their actions were so realistic that it gave motivation and purpose to continue on with the story.

The story evolves using various set pieces making you feel compelled to carry on to your next adventure. However playing the actual game is fun, the enemies are no longer bullet sponges and the gun play along with the cover system is integrated well allowing you to take down enemies with precision. The inclusion of new weapons was also a nice variation. The character movement while exploring is seamless even while traversing tough terrain or evading enemies. The overall pace of the game flowed well never having abrupt or awkward pauses between cut scenes or even between chapters. Again focusing the single player and further immersing you into the game.

Despite what seems like universal praise for the game there were some parts I personally did not like or think could have used some revision. While for the most part the controls have improved I still had issues during some of the platforming areas or while going in and out of cover when I did not want to. Another issue I had was with the early stealth mission, every aspect of that sequence felt out of touch and clunky. While I do appreciate the varied gameplay I do feel it could have been done in a different way. Lastly this could have been just me but early on I had trouble finding where I was suppose to go or what exactly I was to do, these issues seemed to go away as the story progressed and I got familiar with the game. None of these issues spoiled the game in my eyes but only highlighted the positives as they completely outshined the proposed negatives.

Multiplayer

The single player is an 11-13 hour thrill ride filled with distinct characters, varied puzzles, betrayal, fluid combat, organic dialogue and stunning visuals and sound all evenly paced and presented in a way like nothing. Not to mention plenty of reason to replay with different difficulty levels, skins, treasures to obtain and trophies to unlock. But as if that wasn’t enough Naughty Dog chose to also give us a robust multiplayer option as well.

The multiplayer is an excellent extension of the fantastic single player and not just a mode that was tacked on to simply add value. The multiplayer includes both a competitive and a cooperative multiplayer option. The competitive multiplayer has your traditional modes like Deathmatch and objective based modes like Capture the Flag or Plunder as well as Last Man Standing and Capture & Hold called Elimination and Turf War respectively. Each mode has a max of ten players or five on five and can be played on a variety of different maps. All of the maps use the environment straight from the single player allowing the player to scale vertically while still having cover play an integral part of the gameplay. The cooperative multiplayer on the other hand has a max of three players offering brief side missions that while separate from the single player story allow the three players to distinctly interact with each other to accomplish specific objectives. This mode also features its own version of survival mode but with a twist, the three players must capture the treasure while surviving hordes of enemies that gradually get harder.

Throughout multiplayer you obtain in game currency which can be used to purchase various boosters, unlock certain skins or making of videos. Like many online shooters of today full statistic tracking is available through their website. There are various medals to unlock and challenges to complete so there is always something to strive for. While both modes were fun and addicting I personally enjoyed the cooperative mode more than the competitive mode. The competitive mode is not a bad mode but to me lacks the ingredients I would want for a competitive experience. I felt the game unfavorably rewarded luck more than skill and also didn’t feel as precise as it needed to be or as I wanted it to be therefore it wasn’t for me. However with that said it still is an excellent casual competitive game but not one I would consistently play like Call of Duty 4. This does not affect my feelings of the game nor the multiplayer, as I think at its core it’s a wonderful mode and can be enjoyed.

Overall

Uncharted 2 has received universal praise from almost every reviewer and there is a reason for that, it’s a fantastic game. The single player is an unmatched experience in story telling while also being a standout graphically. The characters are molded into the story with such precision and detail that the story resembles a blockbuster movie. But most importantly the game is a complete joy to play. Both the competitive and cooperative multiplayer options are fun to play giving you another reason to never put this game down.

While the game obviously has its flaws the positives completely outshine those supposed negatives. The game completely lived up to the hype while simultaneously propelling Naughty Dog as one of the top developers for the Playstation 3. I personally can not wait for their next title. For these reasons and more I recommend to anyone with a Playstation 3 pick up and play this masterpiece created by Naughty Dog, it’s a must have experience and therefore a must have game. What are you waiting for… GO GET IT!

The wife’s take:

This is a newer section I hope to include in all future reviews, by its name I imagine you know what it is however I will explain further. In this section I will include one or two sentences about the game from my wife’s point of view. I find her female non-gamer point of view to be very enlightening and could be beneficial to some readers, plus she is kind enough to let me play these games in the first place. Let me emphasis that when I say non-gamer I mean that down to its core. I also want to make clear that these are her words and her thoughts therefore will not be included in my review “score” as they may completely vary. In the future depending on feedback I may actually make this a separate post so of course any and all feedback is welcomed. So without further a do here are my wifes thoughts on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

The puzzles were intriguing enough that I actually wanted to help solve them. The visuals and the overall play off the game was so well done that I didn’t have a problem watching someone play which made it feel like a cinematic experience. Plus the characters were witty and believable.

Yes, Drake is back and he is in like Flynn! Another definite contender for the game of the year awa

Yes, Drake is back and he is in like Flynn! Another definite contender for the game of the year award, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a definite must-play (heck, I believe must own) for the PS3 (yes, that other system).
Drake is in another treasure hunt (did we really believe he would stay out of trouble) for the treasure from Marco Polo’s lost fleet. Joining him during the adventure are some favorites (Sully) and some brand new characters like Chloe and Flynn. Flynn is, at first, your partner in an attempt to steal a treasure from a very well-guarded museum, but he betrays you and leaves you to rot in prison. Lucky for Nate that Chloe who, was also involved in the heist, found Sully and they break you out of prison to find the treasure that Flynn got you locked up so he could find. This starts your adventure through the wilderness, the streets and mountains facing military, militia, and something else for the Cintamani Stone.
The third-person shooter has a look similar to the beauty that was Batman: Arkham Asylum, depth and color that amaze and put you in the moment while integrating cutscenes so well that you never feel pushed out of the game. In fact, you almost feel like you are spending the entire time watching a movie. The camera work is perfectly done, featuring one of the more annoying habits from Uncharted of losing the ability to control the camera and changing it so it is only done when cinematic shots are needed and not when you need to see moments in the screen. A perfect example is on the second mission, you are scaling around a building and the camera pans down to see some guards are passing underneath you on the ground. This helps give more feeling and realism to the game and you do not need control of the camera, but as soon as you get around the dome, the camera is all yours to control.
Drake is able to jump, climb, swing, shoot and all of the other wonderful things from the first game that made it so much fun! Hidden throughout the levels are small treasures that can be collected to earn money to buy different clothes, weapons and “perks” like unlimited ammo that can be used once the game is beaten. Naughty Dog added a co-operative and competitive multiplayer area to this Uncharted, making the game more involved and interesting. The best parts of this game still remain the fun gameplay and the beautiful look (I mean, really, the snow sticks to the character…)
Uncharted 2 is an improvement on an excellent game, check it out and see for yourself.

Has Sony finally got itself the mythical system seller? The above question is a strange one to be as

Has Sony finally got itself the mythical system seller?

The above question is a strange one to be asking considering that Sony’s black behemoth of a console has been on the market for over 3 years. Also considering now that after a slow start there is a growing list of high quality console exclusives. But for me none of these exclusives can be considered to be a system seller. All of the system exclusives have all been far too Marmite like to be a true system seller. This game on the other hand could just be the one.

Nathan Drake’s first outing was quite rightly lauded as a very good game and possibly the first exclusive to hint at what the PS3 was truly capable of. But it fell short of true greatness due to a slightly repetitive structure and a slightly fiddly control system and camera. Naughty Dog this time round though have thrown the kitchen sink at it and it has paid off big time.

The game kicks in straight away no tutorials just in your face gameplay from the off. Nathan Drake comes round sat in a chair bleeding and wondering what is going on when all hell breaks loose and finds out that he is sat in a train that is hanging perilously over a very large frozen expanse. As he climbs his way to safety a set of flash backs play out letting you in on how he has managed to get himself in to this perilous situation. Story wise it is much like the first game a globe-trotting adventure where you are after a priceless ancient artefact and a horde of lost treasure. Meanwhile you are being outwitted and double crossed at every turn. Drake’s love interest and partner Sully return from the first game along with a new rival love interest and a new set of baddies. All of the voice acting and characterisation are top-notch leading to a collection of people you truly believe in and either care about or hate. In Nathan Drake, Naughty Dog have made one of the most charismatic, likeable video game lead characters ever created and the voice acting of Nolan North really brings him to life.

Now on to the games graphics which are quite simply breathtaking. In terms of art style they can be a little generic but then again it is trying to convince you that this is the real world so they would have to be. The level of detail in the games wide variety of backdrops is jaw dropping from jungles to snowy expanses through to urban landscapes they look mind-blowingly authentic. Add on to this the character’s animation both in terms of movement and the emotion shown on their faces as the story pans out is just fantastic. Uncharted 2 is without a shadow of a doubt this generations best looking game by a country mile. The word cinematic gets bandied about a lot in the video games world but for once it is a justifiable claim with this game.

The game plays exactly the same as last time out but things have been smoothed. The controls are less fiddly when trying to set up that long jump. And the camera behaves in a much better more cinematic way. This game is all about the huge set pieces and you really do lurch from one frantic perilous situation to the next. From hanging on for grim life in a crashed train to jumping from one exploding vehicle to another and onto a train again fighting it out with guns whilst trying to get the lead car. This is the Hollywood blockbuster done to the fullest and is an absolute thrill-a-minute ride. None of the gameplay elements are particularly original but it all works so well and ties together perfectly.

Add on a fun well balanced multiplayer game with both co-op and deathmatch modes and you have an incredible gaming package. One which I have no hesitation in proclaiming to be game of the year so far. Any gripes or grumbles that I could level at the game are so minor compared to the game as a whole they are not even worth mentioning. So back to my opening gambit I honestly do believe that if Sony back this with the right marketing campaign, Uncharted 2 is their mythical system seller as none of the other console giants have a game that is even comparable to the level of graphical fidelity, adventuring punch and story telling finesse on show here.

Rating 10 / 10

(again, flat out copying Kotaku’s review style)

Loved

The second (and third) time around. Sequences that previously required a couple stabs, like sniper bait, the showdown with the shotgun guys in the snow, truck hopping, or the train boss, I blew through on my first try. Anything that required pattern recognition to undertake no longer became an obstacle, and why should it? I was good enough if i had done it before, so it shouldn’t be challenge if I have to do it again (puzzles notwithstanding, I thought there should be a skip option, ala ratchet and clank). What I got hung up on, even a second and now third time through, were the pure combat sequences. Dolling out blind fire, ammo management, and grenade awareness (for lack of a better word), were facets I never had to consider playing through on normal, but find absolutely essential on crushing. Naughty Dog didn’t just make the enemy’s bullet sponges; they ramped up the intangibles as well.

Enemy AI. Enemy movement is a bit more tolerable than it was in Drake’s Fortune. With the original I would get frustrated when I would have a clean shot and then, a millisecond later, the guy would do some alien dodge sequence that would render my headshot useless. The bad guys had a greater tendency to slide around this time out, but their behavior is much more manageable. I’m also glad they brought back the anti-camp shit, where the AI usually won’t pop back up into an area where you’re waiting with the reticule. It keeps me on my toes, and even when I try, is quick to punish me with a grenade or something. Among Thieves always keeps you moving and always looking for another way around or an extra piece of cover to stick to and it rewards you by disallowing the AI to know your exact location at all times – if you managed to sneak around, they would keep firing at where they thought you were.

Level Design. I like the “arenas” much more this time out. The cathedral, the underground lab (with the mutants), and that shipping crate area toward the end of Drake Fortune had red herrings and sections that came off feeling cheap, or as if I was getting funneled into an area where I was probably going to get fucked up. Among Thieves treats their combat arenas more like a playground. The ice train yard versus the shotgun trio was perfect for running around, climbing over shit, and sneaking up behind them and the two leveled sniper/shotgun base in the monster was wonderfully balanced and, if you played your cards right, full of fun little places to unload on unsuspecting foes.

Art Direction – Touched on this a bit last time, but most, if not all, of the game boasted jaw dropping visuals. Play was critical of this, accepting that it was indisputably gorgeous but weary of Among Thieves choice of locations; did we need more urban warfare or another shootout through a train ride? I think yes, absolutely. Why not? The ruined parade in the streets of Nepal, despite the awkwardness of its location and the obvious allusions to Guns of the Patriots, proved an intriguing location. The crumbled urban warzone was tired, but draping it with vibrant colors and maintaining and unreal attention to detail at every possible instance made it extraordinary. Same goes for the train sequences; I was killed more times than I can count because I would lose myself staring at the scenery. Hoping from car to car was something that I think we’ve been doing since Bad Dudes, but Among Thieves made me feel like it was the first time I had ever done it (a helicopter implausibly, but awesomely, keeping Drake on his toes tends to do that).

Not So Much

AI friends – I liked the characters of Elena, Chloe, and Flynn, but their actual presence in the game was occasionally a source of pointless frustration. For example, if I got ahead of them when climbing somewhere, they would still engage their routine and, in effect, take priority over Drake and inadvertently push me off ledges and into oblivion. Chloe and Elena also had a penchant for taking up valuable cover real estate. They would either be positioned by an edge I wanted, or they would wander over to one, nudge me, and totally fuck up my shot. The villagers in Siege, with their tendency to knock me around or be standing exactly where I needed to be, didn’t help much either. That, and the games reliance to make their primary function to boost Drake up to ladders was a little weak, but they couldn’t get themselves killed, so it was hardly something to complain about.

Rube Goldberg Puzzles – I get why these were there, Drake needs to solve some puzzles god dammit, but when you sit back and examine the ridiculous crap you just did, and it all seems a bit silly. I had to arrange mirrors to bounce light into the forehead of two six foot faces, which allowed me to climb giant isosceles triangles, which, when done correctly, fell upon a giant face in the floor, which opened the mouth that also happened to be an underground passage. I got there, by the way, from moving the hands of a giant Indian statue, which drained a pool of water that lead to a secret passage. And I’m totally glossing over the ridiculous lengths required to access Shambhala. Again, it’s not bad, per say, just a little, “hey guys, what the hell was that?”

Uncharted 2 is poised to be game of the year for 2009, but is it really as perfect as all these review websites claim? I beg to differ. Uncharted 2 is an excellent game in the single player campaign, but the multiplayer is obviously flawed, yet no review sites even commented on the flaws that were apparent in the demo and still existed even after the first official patch released last week. The single player campaign is better than the first in terms of visuals and plot, which continues from the events of the first game.

Graphic and sound:

Uncharted 2 looks amazing, the content utilizes the complete 25GB available in the Blu-Ray disc to its full potential. Screen Based Ambient Occlusion is used in Uncharted 2, which is a real-time technique for rendering ambient occlusion. Few games such as Crysis and Gears of War 2 use this technique. Environments are based on real world locations and appear to be photo-realistic in some cases. Levels are expansive and require no visible load times or game data installation. Running water such as rivers and waterfalls look great, splashes from character and bullet impacts occur, although some objects do not have splash effects. Characters clothes show effects from the environment such as snow or wetness from water immersion. Character models look strikingly similar to their real life voice actor counterparts. Uncharted 2 is one of the most visually beautiful games ever created.

Background music in Uncharted 2 is almost non-existent, which is a good thing since the game has a semi-tactical feel to it and require the player to be aware of the surroundings. Voiceovers in Uncharted 2 are movie quality caliber with Nolan North and Emily Rose reprising their roles as Nathan Drake and Elena respectively. In addition, Claudia Black provides the voice for Chloe. Unlike most video game scripts filled with ridiculous one-liners that do not fit into the game world, Uncharted 2 provides dialogue that would be normally used in real life. Everything the actors say and emote is believable.

Gameplay and controls:

Uncharted 2 has a single player campaign similar to the first game and has added a multiplayer element in this installment. The single player campaign consists of 26 levels of action packed gameplay through various exotic locations such as Nepal, Borneo, Turkey, and others. The single player campaign has 5 difficulty levels ranging from very easy to crushing. Once the game is completed, the player can unlock artwork, behind the scenes videos, all of the game’s cutscenes, player skins, weapons, render modes, and tweaks. Any tweaks, render modes, and weapons unlocked can only be used in the highest difficulty level that was completed or lower. The multiplayer is the crux of Uncharted 2 though. Games consist of ranked or unranked matches of traditional deathmatch, elimination, plunder (similar to capture the flag), king of the hill, co-op, and co-op arena. Level cap is 60 and money is earned to purchase boosters, which add perks such as carrying an extra grenade or earning more money per kill. Money is not only used to purchase items, but also as experience for gaining levels.

For all the work that was put into Uncharted 2 multiplayer, the game is not without its flaws. Spawn points in Uncharted 2 are horrendous. The spawn points are random, meaning that at anytime, an enemy can spawn right behind you and get a cheap kill. This is not a rare event, this happens constantly, so be aware that you will be killed by the crap spawn point, not cheap players. No other game review site has reported this since they get advertising dollars from the same game companies they review. It is a broken system, which as of the most recent game update, has not been fixed and no plans are in effect to fix it. Ranking is pointless since anyone who can run-and-gun around the map will encounter random spawns and achieve cheap kills. The other issue is the grab effect that Drake automatically institutes when encountering a ledge. The auto-grab is essential for the single-player game, but honestly in the multiplayer it becomes more of a hindrance when a player is trying to jump down to the ground level and the character auto-grabs the ledge, thus leaving the player open to hostile fire.

Uncharted 2 also has the ability to automatically record video of multiplayer matches that can then be uploaded to Naughty Dog’s servers for viewing by other players. In addition, a player can link a Twitter account to Uncharted 2 and have it automatically post achievements/milestones in gameplay.

Overall thoughts:

The single player campaign is one of the most engrossing games I have ever played in terms of action and script. Anyone who is a fan of the Tomb Raider series should grab this and let the old relic of Lara Croft finally die away into gaming history. Between the visuals and the gameplay, this is game of the year for 2009. Multiplayer on the other hand is a different matter. Casual gamers will love the run-and-gun atmosphere of the game since it requires no tactical thought or strategy to rack up wins. Hardcore gamers will hate the arcade feel of the game and the horrendous random spawn points. Hopefully, Naughty Dog will listen to the complaints all over the player forums and patch the spawn points and the auto-grab issue. This is a definite must have game for the PS3 collectors out there. For the truly exclusive collectors, there is a Fortune Hunter Edition of the game that was available in limited quantities (only 200) given away through various contests and going on EBay for about $2,000. Fortunately, we don’t care for paying such an exorbitant price unless it’s a life-size Big Daddy from Bioshock.

I know this game has been out for a few weeks now; The reason this review is going up now is honestly because I couldn’t stop playing it. Now on with the review.

October 12, 2009. A date that will live in video game history, for the next couple years at least. Uncharted 2 is the best game I’ve played all year (So far). Between the physics, graphics, storyline, and voice acting, this game had very few flaws. Glitches were almost non existent. Naughty Dog also threw out an update last week to seal what small holes the game had.

Uncharted 2 takes a unique approach to a familiar action-adventure storyline. It’s kind of like Indiana Jones mixed with The Mummy laced with acid, to put it lightly. You play as the intrepid Nathan Drake. The game starts with you holding onto a train that is hanging off the side of a cliff. Through various well developed cut scenes you find yourself on a mission to find marco polo’s lost fleet. Which spirals you into a wild east asian journey to find the mystical city of Shamballa, with all of it’s riches, and dangers.

The storyline was developed so well for this game. It’s becoming more common practice in the last few years for games to have well developed plots and in depth characters. Several developers have been on the leading edge of this new gaming experience and Naughty Dog is definitely one of them.

When I was done with Uncharted 2, I felt wonderful. There is nothing I would have changed at that time about this game. Looking back at it and reading some reviews I can see where some people have complaints. I’ve seen reviews that knock Uncharted 2 down a peg for not being able to climb on everything and having it have a linear approach to getting through the levels. I see where these critics are coming from, but to put my two cents in; The game had so many elements that went above and beyond expectations. It’s only natural for a game developer to leave some stuff out, saving it for the next time around. The game was amazing, bottom line.

The graphics were stunning, it was like watching a high end CGI film during the cut scenes. The gameplay was amazing, I had no problems with any of the mechanics of gameplay. The physics were simply groundbreaking as well.

There is a section in the game when you are on a train and your character’s movements are disrupted by the movement of the train, simply amazing. The very last scene in this game give’s you that last minute adrenaline rush we all look for in an action-adventure game, and it delivers it flawlessly. Overall this game was a pure amazement to me the whole time I was playing it. Endless hours of “oh’s” and “ah’s” with a few “Holy crap!” sprinkled on top. This game is quite a contender for Best Game of the Year, but with all these other games on the horizon for the holiday season, like Assassin’s Creed 2, Modern Warfare 2, and Dragon Age: Origins, and more; It has quite the battle ahead of it. I am fully confident in saying it’s gonna be at least in the top three best games of this year, if not number one.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves deserves every fraction of a 10/10.

Es gibt viele Wege dieses Spiel zu beschreiben: Einzigartig, Bombastisch, Revolutionär… the list goes on and on.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Nolan… Er Nathan Returns in search of treasure in the second installment

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Nolan… Er Nathan Returns in search of treasure in the second installment of the Uncharted Series.

Treasure hunters rejoice, Treasure Hunter Nathan Drake, better known as “Nate”, is back again in hot pursuit of another historical, unsolved mystery. We return to Nate’s dangerous lifestyle roughly two years after the events in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, still finding himself wrapped up in gunfire, explosions, and unfortunately for him, more climbing.

One of the grand things about this game, something I wish to commend Naughty Dog and voice actor Nolan North on, is that you, the gamer, feel as if you really are Nathan Drake, almost as if your life is really on the line. Those two forces combined have brought on this large treasure of their own, duly named Uncharted. Mainly for the fact that with every new installment of the series, they seem to tackle something no one else has touched. With the flawless mixture of cut scenes and actual game play, the developers finally found the element that makes the game look dangerously close to realistic. This formula also plays on the gamer’s emotional strings, causing them to become lost in the story line. Whether it the more chipper moments or even the dark, depressive ones, the gamer is enticed to go on.

Wounded, and weakened, Drake awakens to the blurry outline of an old train car. Raising his bloodied hand into his slowly sharpening vision, he merely says, “That’s a lot of my blood…” before random objects begin to hurdle towards him. As we slowly get a view of where the objects are flying to, we catch sight of the large, snow capped mountains directly below the train car as it hang precariously off a nearby cliff. From that moment on, the game is off to a huge start. After being flung from the train car by gravity herself, you are forced to make your way up the wreckage of the trashed train car, as natural results of destruction thwart your trek upward. During all this, you come to notice one thing, the transition of the game play and cut scenes are perfect, it’s an instant movement.
As you are trying to escape the falling train car, you jump fervently to make it out in time. Suddenly you have no control and without knowing it you went straight into a cut scene of you leaping from the train to reach for the side of the cliff that you barely hang onto.

It seems Naughty Dog has perfected the one part of cinematics between cut scenes and game-play, making moments such as that seem, as many have said before, just like a movie. Not to say that we need to make games more like movies, because then that would become so much more boring on some game genres like FPS or RPGs, but they could take how amazing the graphics are and place them in the right spots. *Hint, hint gaming industry!*

The next thing you notice as you maneuver through the levels is that there is not a load screen in sight, minus the one that pops up when you first start the game and the one that loads the first level from the main menu. After that there is never a load icon nor a black screen moment as you walk through one part of the jungle to another. I personally love this about Uncharted 2, because it makes it feel… real. Which is the one thing I think we need to feel when playing a game. If it doesn’t feel or look real, how can we expect to be completely immersed in the game? Uncharted tapped into this and somehow managed to take away all the load screens, and was completely loved for it. In fact, many people have celebrated this exact trait as one of the top ideas that other games should take into consideration.

The graphics ARE stunning, without any other way to describe them. Things could not look better at the current level of progress in the gaming industry, giving Uncharted 2 my award for “Most realistic graphics in the industry in 2009”. I sometimes can’t tell the difference between the cut scenes and the real game, things just look that incredible. Knowing the gaming industry, the cinematics are normally better looking than the game-play, but Uncharted takes the cake. It goes without saying that Naughty Dog took the torch and ran all the way up the Himalayan Mountains, reached their peak and suddenly found some way to keep going up through the clouds.

It transcends all other graphics of the current era, whether it be from the tree branches and leaves blowing in the wind, to the beautiful and lush water effects, which are usually my favorite graphical aspect. Also the detail of the character models is so incredible that they take the time to pay attention to the minute, physical attributes, such as every cut, scar, burn, and bruise. If other developers follow along this path, then one day we’ll have the hardest time distinguishing between a video game character and ourselves.

The sound design is another part of what makes this game so spectacular. Everything from the wildlife all around you in the jungle to the snow crunching beneath your feet in the frozen mountains. Even the explosions are earth shattering and loud enough to leave your ears ringing. This game has so many sounds that were tested over and over again until it was brought to perfection.

The one thing that tops the charts in this department are the voice actors. The men and women who breathe life into the characters, like Drake and Elena, do it so well that they convey deep and moving emotions to the players, bringing the story forward and showing off how much power voice actors really have.

Nolan North returns as Drake and once again he pulls off Drake so well it feels that in most respects he is Drake. He makes the character his own, adding in his own personal touch of dialogue, when allowed to adlib. But even when he doesn’t, he carries such a hold on gamers who love Drake. With his smart mouth jabs, his detailed historical descriptions, even his comedy in the face of immediate danger give him such a strong personality in the gaming world. I mean, how many people do you know that manage to survive a falling apartment building, leap through a window just moments before crashing and can laugh while saying, “We… We were almost in that!”?

The action in this game is so intense, that every moment that you don’t expect something to happen, just before your eyes an explosion will occur, debris will fall blocking your path or the building itself falls down while you and everyone in it stumbles and falls. Literally everything inside the room will shift. From furniture, plants, to you and your enemies stumbling around as you try to hit your mark, while your cursor is thrown wildly around the screen at the mercy of the sliding room. Everything is so perfectly timed, it’s as if when you feel a sense of calm, the game engine realizes it and compensates by throwing you off guard with a huge explosion that knocks you off your feet. Your heart rate will increase, your mind will be on edge, and everything will change as you are thrown off balance once again.

Adding to the action, Uncharted 2 brought in a new silent takedown option, allowing Drake to take enemies who don’t realize he is there and knock them out or kill them. Adding a change of pace to the regular “Gun and Duck” game play, and utilizing these silent kills allows for a danger decrease from avoided fire fights. People may even use it just for the sheer joy of sneaking up on the mercs and just letting all your anger out on them. The game also allows you to simply push mercs off the rooftops or the side of a building, whatever your anger management coach recommends.

The story, overall, has such an engaging plot filled with twists and turns that you never expect, or maybe you did but still feel that sense of surprise when they happen. It starts out from showing you where you are at that point, finding you bleeding, confused, and hanging off a cliff. Which transitions to a string of flash backs telling just how you got from point A to point B, as you started out in the train. Then it takes you through a quick recap of how you made it through the train car. You are then sent forward to the final, and even more suspenseful, point C at the startling conclusion.

Things are never as they seem Among Thieves, (see how I did that?) and you should never expect things to ever stay constant, besides the action and the gunfire surrounding the frightening battle for the ultimate treasures. I believe that Naughty Dog is a big believer of a good story line as I am, seeing as how they created such a deep and ever changing plot in the original Uncharted and kept the same idea in this one.
Another aspect I loved from this game of treasure hunting was the collectables in the form of treasures hidden around the levels, which started out with 60 treasures in the first game now in this game has turned into 100. While you collect each one, you eventually get Playstation trophies for every 10 trophies, till you get number 100. Achievements are associated with kills from different guns, silent take-downs, and hidden actions done during game-play. Though there is a new addition this time around, each 5th trophy you grab, or any other achievement, earns you a sub achievement granting you a new title and allows you a certain amount of money to spend in the in-game shop on the main menu or pause menu. You can purchase anything from single player weapons, skins, render filters, to concept art.

I am a stickler for collectables and being a treasure fanatic at heart, I loved gathering treasures and even the occasional Secret Relic. It gave me a reason to explore the beautiful terrain and environments and see another side of a cultures treasure.

Overall, this game had very few flaws, yet it did have some downfalls. Not enough for me to change my opinion of it, but I did become aggravated at these downfalls, (who wouldn’t?). The constant jumping off of cliffs, missing the ledge I was aiming for, or rolling into a pit on pure accident. I mean, in the final level I fell three times trying to run away from an enemy and each of those times instead of jumping straight onto the next landmass, I fell to my death and had to restart that part. Another annoyance was that Drake, as great as he is, tends to grunt when he jumps up or forward. And those grunts do get… annoying… It’s the simple fact that “Argh!” over and over again does kind of irritate people after trying to jump onto a ledge you keep missing somehow. One other hindrance I found, were the controls were sometimes unresponsive or did the opposite action I was hoping for. When trying to change my cover, instead I would roll away from the barricade and launched me right into the line of fire, sometimes causing death. Overall, the flaws aren’t exactly big enough to cause me to change my score from all the spectacular aspects of the game.

In the end, this game was a blast, was amazing, and so powerful I have to say this is my game of the year. The Uncharted franchise is looking to launch at full steam ahead and from the rumors heard around the net, many people say that there is already hope from inner Uncharted members that the 3rd game exists, and supposedly will look better than #2. I also hear that they have enough adventures to go on for some time to come. So my hopes for a 3rd may be founded and I really wonder if any information will come out about it any time soon. I loved this game just like I loved the first. It maybe my inner treasure hunter coming out but either way I am in love with this series and many other works by Naughty Dog, such as Jak and Daxter and Crash Bandicoot, and I know that they continue to pump out such great titles as these.

My final score for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves gets 10 out of 10. For realistic graphics, amazing sound work, voice actors, an engaging story, powerful emotions along with an adventure steeped in historical drama, and action packed gun fights.

I will keep up with Naughty Dog till I’m probably old and gray, and if they keep producing great hits like this, I’ll die a happy man. My thanks go out to Naughty Dog, Nolan North, and the rest of the Uncharted 2 cast for making my video game filled life ten times more exciting and humorous. Now, I’m off to find another game to play, or replay, and get back to some more of my “World Famous” Reviews for all three fans I have out there. This is Gamer Jay, signing out, shutting down, and going to standby.
