Pivot is a new project from Microsoft Live Labs that looks very promising. It’s a system and interface for displaying and filtering large sets of information. From the Pivot website:

“Pivot makes it easier to interact with massive amounts of data in ways that are powerful, informative, and fun. We tried to step back and design an interaction model that accommodates the complexity and scale of information rather than the traditional structure of the Web.

When we use the Web today we treat the most fundamental scenarios as separate activities. Search takes us from many things to one, browsing moves us from one thing to another, and recommendations expose affinities that enable us to explore related topics. Can we do better by combining these scenarios into a more unified experience?

Pivot focuses on this intersection, enabling us to learn key lessons while attempting to broadly apply this philosophy to the Web. We hope that Pivot will inspire and fuel transformative experiences across the Web.”

That last bit is particularly interesting –the intersection of browse and search in particular. Of course, I wrote an entire chapter in Designing Web Navigation on integrating browse and search (see Chapter 11). There, I focused on more microscopic UI elements and techniques that web designers could readily implement. But at the heart of my argument is the fact that fundamentally, from an information seeking standpoint of the user, there really is not difference between browsing and search: people just want to find information.

Facetted search takes up a big chunk of Chapter 11 in DWN. And a good part of Pivot is an extension of faceted navigation. It’s really a big filter system using different facets–but a way more powerful way to do it, in what appears to be a much more direct and satisfying experience.

Notice also that the creators of Pivot talk about emotional connections and information experience in the trailer video. This is also something that distinquishes Pivot from other such inventions, I believe.

So, Pivot doesn’t appear to be a niche, scientific experiment with limited practical use. I think there are some quite valuable aspects to Pivot that hint at things to come. I’ll be interested to see where it goes.

CorelDRAW had its 20th anniversary just recently. If a software can stand for 20 years it couldn

CorelDRAW had its 20th anniversary just recently. If a software can stand for 20 years it couldn’t be that bad, right? But yes, it looks awkward and many people simply ignore it, since it is not “cool” enough. Its designer community isn’t large and the software itself has some disadvantages, which make it look a bit awkward. Let’s reviews some advantages and disadvantages of using this software.

Introduction

Why is that only people already addicted to CorelDRAW use it? Maybe they know something we don’t. In this article, I’ll review some of the issues with CorelDRAW. I think the developers of this software have created a sharp program, but not so user friendly.

CorelDRAW is very precise and reliable. All the tools give maximum control, but you must fight your way through to learn them. It’s definitely not the software that you can take for a quick spin and easily create great artwork.

The good news is that when you get used to its feature set, it becomes part of your thinking and can be a strong tool for creating astounding artwork. Let’s review a few pros and cons of CorelDRAW.

Er…How Do I Navigate?

First of all forget about the Space Bar equals Pan thesis. CorelDRAW has a navigator board but I must admit it’s not the real thing and most people don’t even know where it is (small box at the lower-right corner of the interface).

The easiest way to navigate is to zoom in and out to the pointer area with your mouse. This can be tricky sometimes if your mouse isn’t smooth enough. Sounds strange but once accustomed to this navigation technique you will get addicted to it. If you still feel lost grab the Hand Tool (H) to pan, and press spacebar to change back to the previous tool.

What About Freehand Brushes?

This is a real pain. CorelDraw’s freehand tools are only a concept but are nearly impossible to use them. Just try to do a quick hatching with the the freehand tool. You will end up with a mess, since you will continuously select the previously drawn lines.

It’s OK though, as this is not primarily freehand painting or sketching software. There are some other industry standard tools on the Corel palette (for example Painter) which excel in this field. But once again this is a week point since the core concept of the software is not to painting.

The World’s Best and Easiest Curves/Nodes Management

When you get down to the details you will be amazed how easy is to use the bezier tool and how precise its curve management is. If you are after vectorization then Corel Draw is great. Corel Draw is excellent software when it comes to vector tools. You have all the control over the nodes and curves with mathematical precision.

The right-click context menu makes vectorization so precise that technical illustration is easy to create. I take a deep bow in front of the team who developed this. This part is the strength of CorelDRAW from the dawn of vector software.

Super Fine Gradient Mesh

You need photo-realistic vectors? Just grab the super easy gradient mesh tool and you will make unbelievable vector portraits in no time. The Corel company has bundled photo-realistic art already in the version 8 clip art, and don’t forget the Hedy Lamar illustration on the cover of version 8. If you check the Corel community galleries you will find some gorgeous photo-realistic portraits, though the galleries are sometimes awkward and the community isn’t very exciting.

Highly Controllable Boolean Operations

I simply love this part of CorelDRAW. When you need to cut, weld, trim or intersect just open up the shaping docker and you have maximum control over the Boolean operations and the resulting shapes. Actually, you can base your style on these fine set of tools. Check them out for yourself.

Strange and Useful Effects

The effect palette is also a strength of CorelDRAW. I use these tools most of the time, especially the contour tool. Try some of this for extra options.

Color Separation and Prepress Goodness

If you’re working in the DTP business, CorelDRAW is your humble servant. It corrects your mistakes silently and makes color separation and prepress work as easy as it can be. The main concept of this software, the precision, has its word in the printing menu.

Screen Refreshing

If you want to spare yourself from getting upset, then don’t forget to press Command + W often to refresh the screen. CorelDRAW tends to forget to do this for you, which can be quite annoying sometimes.

Trace!

CorelDRAW has top notch tracing software integrated. It is quick, highly-customizable, and precise. Even if you don’t like other parts of the software, trying Corel Draw’s trace is a must. As a plus they have included a font recognition routine in the X4 version, which uses What the font! to find out what font was used on your scan. Nice idea!

Who uses CorelDraw Anyway?

Conclusion

CorelDRAW can be awkward, especially to new users, but powerful in the hands of a seasoned user. You must decide the right vector software for you.

If you are a fan of South Park, choose Corel Draw because all the characters, scenery, and props are drawn using this vector package, as wikipedia states.

Finally, below is some artwork from renowned vectorist Roberlan, which showcase the choosing a vector software platform controversy.

Having to compete with the likes of Garmin and TomTom is no easy task, but Navigon is hoping to woo

Having to compete with the likes of Garmin and TomTom is no easy task, but Navigon is hoping to woo some new customers with the Navigon 7200T. Now, in the past, we’ve always commended Navigon for offering feature-rich GPS for an affordable price, but we’ve had issues with the spotty performance and the complicated user interface. The 7200T follows a similar story line, but with a happier ending. The GPS offers an attractive design and plenty of features, including voice address entry, 3D landmark renderings, text-to-speech functionality, and integrated Bluetooth. The user interface and maps still aren’t as clean as a Garmin or a TomTom, but performance has improved and address entry by voice can be quite accurate with some training–better than the similarly featured TomTom GO 930. Plus at $499, it’s a more affordable alternative to the Garmin Nuvi 880, though you don’t get all the voice command features with the 7200T. Still if you’re in the market for a higher-end portable navigation device that won’t completely bust the bank, the Navigon 7200T is a decent choice.

Design
Like the Navigon 2000S, the Navigon 7200T features a slightly new design with a black matte casing rather than the lacquered finish of the company’s previous models. It still keeps the compact size, measuring 4.6 inches wide by 3.2 inches tall by 0.7 inch deep and weighing 6.5 ounces, so you can use it in multiple cars or take it with you on vacations for use with rental cars.

The 7200T’s display is slightly different from the company’s other models. The screen is completely flat and doesn’t have a beveled edge, so it gives the GPS a more sophisticated and streamlined look. The display measures 4.3 inches diagonally and is sharp and bright, making it easy to view maps. The touch screen is also more responsive than other Navigon units we’ve tested in the past. The onscreen keyboard is slightly larger than the Navigon 7100, so address entry was easier and more accurate. Also, the GPS features predictive text, so as you enter letters, it will automatically bring up possible result matches. Unfortunately, you only have the option of an ABC-formatted keyboard and not a QWERTY one.

The user interface is pretty intuitive. From the start menu , you have four main options: New Destination, My Destinations, Take Me Home, and Voice Entry. As we’ve noted in our other reviews, the Navigon interface isn’t quite as clean or easy as a TomTom or Garmin GPS. For example, if you simply want to go to the map screen, you have to tap Options first and then Show Map, whereas the other systems have direct shortcuts. The extra steps required on the Navigon 7200T, but it definitely made us appreciate the simplified interface of the other units.

There’s a power button on top of the unit, while there’s a microSD expansion slot, a reset hole, a mini USB port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom. Finally, there’s an external antenna jack on the back.

The Navigon 7200T comes packaged with a car charger, a vehicle mount (windshield and dashboard), a software CD, and reference material. The car mount is slightly different than the ones that shipped with previous Navigon units. It consists of a disc that attaches to the back of the GPS, and that piece connects to the arm of the mount. There’s a bit of assembly required, but it’s quite easy. What’s difficult is removing the unit from the disc; there’s a little release lever at the bottom, but we still had problems. The good news is the mount securely held the 7200T in place during our road tests.

Features
The Navigon 7200T includes maps of the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. To plan a trip, you can enter a location by specific address, point of interest, recent destination, user-defined home, and so forth. Of course, the big news is that you can enter addresses by voice. When you first use the voice command system, you do a little test read in your car so the GPS can learn your voice and the environment in which you’ll be using the 7200T. The first couple of times we used the voice entry system, the results weren’t very accurate, but the more we used it, the better it got (check out the Performance section for more details). Unfortunately, unlike the Garmin Nuvi 880, the voice command system is limited to just address entry and can’t be used for other tasks.

The 7200T can calculate routes in one of three ways–fast, optimum, and short–and gives you the option to allow or avoid highways and toll roads. There are also pedestrian and bicycle modes. In addition, the 7200T offers free real-time traffic updates for life, so you can know the road condition before hitting the road or finding alternative routes if you happen to get caught in traffic. If there are any incidents along your route, you’ll see a little exclamation point on your map screen (as well as get an audible cue) and by tapping it, it will bring up a list of congested areas. You can select a specific incident and get more details on the problem or choose to ignore it.

Ever since the Garmin Nuvi 880 was announced at CES 2008, we’ve been excited to get our hands

Ever since the Garmin Nuvi 880 was announced at CES 2008, we’ve been excited to get our hands on this portable navigation system. Given the good track record of the other Nuvi series devices, we expected more of the same, solid feature list and good performance. However, we were most looking forward to taking its speech recognition capabilities out for a test drive. To be honest, we were a bit weary since we’ve tried other such-equipped GPS devices, including the Magellan Maestro 4250 and the TomTom GO 930, and while they worked, there weren’t the most accurate and the capabilities were limited. This isn’t so with the Nuvi 880. We were blown away at the accuracy of the speech recognition, the range of features you can use it with, and its overall ease of use. This, in combination with the navigation offerings, sleek design, and solid performance, makes it worthy of our Editors’ Choice award. The only downfall is that you’re going to pay for these features. The Garmin Nuvi 880 has a price tag of $ 1,071.41, but you can probably find it for a bit less online.

Design
Like the rest of the Nuvi series, the Garmin Nuvi 880 is sleek, compact, and simple. It measures 4.9 inches wide by 3.1 inches high by 0.7 inch deep and weighs 6.2 ounces for easy portability between vehicles. The small size also comes in handy when using the it outside of the car as an entertainment device or travel aid, since the Nuvi comes loaded with games and travel tools.

Another benefit is the Nuvi 880’s spacious 4.3-inch touch screen. With a 480×272-pixel resolution, the display is bright and easy to read, whether you’re reading maps or using the other features. You can adjust the screen’s brightness and there’s an automatic mode that switches the map colors for optimal viewing during the day or night. The touch screen was responsive to our commands, and the onscreen keyboard is available in QWERTY or ABC format. The keyboard is on the small side, so users with larger fingers might have some problems. The good news is that it has predictive text, so it will automatically pull up possible search results as soon as you start inputting a couple of letters.

The user interface and software is intuitive. All the icons and menus are clearly marked, and we found that you could pretty much figure out the basic operations just by playing with the device. However, for some advanced tasks such as planning a multidestination trip or setting up Bluetooth, you might want to consult the user manual.

On the left spine, you will find a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD expansion slot, and a mini USB port. There’s a power button on top, and the bottom of the unit holds an external antenna jack and power/cradle connector.

The Garmin Nuvi 880 comes packaged with a vehicle mount (windshield and dash), a car charger, a USB cable, a speech recognition remote control, and reference material. The vehicle mount is simple to install and attach, and it securely held the Nuvi 880 in our road tests. We found it interesting that there is a separate remote control for the speech recognition capabilities. On other systems with this technology, it is simply built into the device. The control consists of on and off buttons to activate the feature, and a rubber strap so you can attach it to some place in your car, such as the steering wheel. It’s a bit of an eyesore, but we’re willing to overlook this minor inconvenience since the accuracy of the speech recognition capabilities are the best we’ve seen to date (see Performance for more).

Features
The Garmin Nuvi 880 comes preloaded with City Navigator NT maps of North America and millions of points of interest. Perhaps the biggest highlight, though, is its speech recognition capabilities. We’ve seen this technology in other systems, such as the Magellan Maestro 4250 and TomTom GO 930, but the Nuvi 880 is the most impressive with the breadth of its capabilities and accuracy. In all, you can use voice commands to perform 30 functions, including entering addresses, adjusting the system volume, activating the hands-free speaker system, playing/stopping the music player, viewing the trip computer, and accessing MSN Direct services.

To start planning a trip, whether by using your voice or the touch screen, you can enter a specific address, choose a POI, or select a location from the Recently Found or Favorites list. The Nuvi 880 can store up to 500 favorites/locations. In addition, it supports multidestination trips and you can add waypoints on the fly. You have your choice of three route preferences (faster time, shorter distance, or off-road) and three usage modes (automobile, bicycle, or pedestrian). You can avoid certain road types if you choose, such as toll roads and highways. There’s also a detour function if you want to avoid a certain part of the given route and if you happen to get off track, the Nuvi 880 can do automatic route recalculations. If you don’t need guidance, you can just have the Nuvi track your movements by tapping View Map.

I am falling behind in my schedule, and several posts will only be published in the beginning of nex

I am falling behind in my schedule, and several posts will only be published in the beginning of next year. However, I didn’t want to postpone this one as this is by far the number one request: how to split the tabs row, on my Easy Tabs solution.

This post explains how you can tweak the Easy Tabs v2 to achieve this. The option will be included in the next public release of the Easy Tabs Web Part.

To split the tabs row into two, follow these steps:

- include the Easy Tabs Web Part in your page. This is a Content Editor Web Part that contains a script.

- edit it, using the source editor of the CEWP.

- find this line of code:
activateTab(ActiveTab);

- replace it with:
var splitdiv = document.createElement(“div”);
var index = Math.floor(TabsTD.childNodes.length*0.5);
TabsTD.insertBefore(splitdiv,TabsTD.childNodes[index]);
activateTab(ActiveTab);

Basically, what we’re doing is simply add a “line break” in the middle of the tabs row (hence the 0.5 in the script).

You can of course add more than one line break, for example:
var splitdiv1 = document.createElement(“div”);
var index1 = Math.floor(TabsTD.childNodes.length*0.7);
TabsTD.insertBefore(splitdiv1,TabsTD.childNodes[index1]);
var splitdiv2 = document.createElement(“div”);
var index2 = Math.floor(TabsTD.childNodes.length*0.3);
TabsTD.insertBefore(splitdiv2,TabsTD.childNodes[index2]);
activateTab(ActiveTab);

Adjust the split values (0.3 and 0.7 in the above example) to your own needs.

Hope this helps!

Note: if you attended the Easy Tabs workshop, the split option is included in your Easy Tabs version (3.1). If you need more than two rows, here is a solution I have already posted on the Stump the Panel forum:

This is the current split function in v 3.1 (written in jQuery):
//split
if (ET001_split == “Yes”) {
var splitindex = Math.floor($(ET001_TabContainer).children().length*0.5-1);
$(ET001_TabContainer).children().eq(splitindex).after(“<div style=’font-size:0px;’></div>”);}

splitindex is the index at which the row will be split. If you have 16 tabs, then:
splitindex = 7 (indexing starts at 0 in JavaScript)

You can change this calculation to include more splits, for example:
//split
if (ET001_split == “Yes”) {
var splitindex = Math.floor($(ET001_TabContainer).children().length*0.3-1);
$(ET001_TabContainer).children().eq(splitindex*2).after(“<div style=’font-size:0px;’></div>”);
$(ET001_TabContainer).children().eq(splitindex).after(“<div style=’font-size:0px;’></div>”);}

Or you can force your own values:
//split
$(ET001_TabContainer).children().eq(5).after(“<div style=’font-size:0px;’></div>”);
$(ET001_TabContainer).children().eq(11).after(“<div style=’font-size:0px;’></div>”);

And if your users ask for too many rows…switch to a Quick Menu Web Part!

Today while at work I was working to clean up our intranet’s site directory in SharePoint.

I noticed that the Navigation menu in one of our sites was only listing 50 page links, even though there were plenty more pages within that particular site.

Since I knew there were more and that this was probably the result of some inherent limit, I dug around and found this post which explains how to modify your web.config. It basically boils down to adding a property DynamicChildLimit=”XX” to the following entries in the web.config file, where XX is 0 (no limit) or whatever numeric limit you decide. By default it is 50. (The web.config file to modify is usually located in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80, with the last portion being whatever port number MOSS is running from).

Set the limit to 0 to give yourself flexibility.

«©NCSX» Sony and Zenrin collaborate to produce software titled Minna no Navi that maps the entirety of Japan from the urban jungle to the uncluttered expanse of the countryside. According to the product specs, detailed maps of over 1,100 cities are included. Utilizing Sony’s NAV-U software engine which is used in Sony’s pwn personal navigation devices, Minna no Navi provides a user-friendly menu system that allows anyone (well, most anyone) to use Sony’s PlaceEngine software to figure out where he/she is and what’s nearby. A social utility called PetaMap can also be accessed to share information on hotspots and places of interest with other PSP users. For example, if you’ve just enjoyed a really mediocre beef bowl at a Yoshinoya in Osaka, simply mark the location on the map so that others can also enjoy some really mediocre beef bowl. The software may also be used to map out routes from point A to point B and view detailed 2D and 3D street maps of Japan. In essence, the software turns the PSP into a full-featured personal navigation device at a reasonable cost.

The Minna no Navi bundle package includes the navigation software and a Sony PSP GPS Receiver so users can get their bearings. Once the bearings have been gotten, the PSP may be used to play a game or watch a movie UMD. Versatility, that’s what the PSP is all about.

The first production of Minna no Navi includes a bonus bottle holder that’s being given away in 100% ratio.

Locating information quickly and efficiently is the goal for any successful organization. SharePoint

Locating information quickly and efficiently is the goal for any successful organization. SharePoint 2010 handles this task brilliantly with its metadata service, refinement searches, tags, etc. On top of that, I believe this nice little addition of configuring navigation hierarchies for lists and documents libraries will be one of the first things utilized out of the gates. Think about a library with thousands of items and being only a few clicks away from the document you need! Here is a walkthrough on how to configure navigation hierarchies:

Limitations:

Navigation hierarchies can only be based off of the following column types: content type, single-value choice field, or managed metadata field

What we have to start with:

A document library storing companywide policies and standards

A single-value choice field column called Division for each branch or department in my company

Now, let’s configure the navigation hierarchy:

From the ribbon UI, click Library Settings under the Library tab

Select Metadata navigation settings

Under Configure Navigation Hierarchies, add the column over to the Selected Hierarchy Fields and click Ok

Go back to your list or document library and you will see on the left hand side a tree view listing your field

Click the field to expand its values

Click on one of the metadata values to filter the list view!

And within five minutes you have a list or library that can be filtered!
