I bought this SD Card for an upcoming trip to Italy because I would be renting a car while I was there. Having this European map was a lifesaver. It gave us the ability to go off of the beaten paths. I found the map to be very accurate…even within the complex streetscapes of Florence. If you missed a turn, it would recalculate your route accurately.
Once, I was driving on a highway that had several tolls. This was an inconvenience because there was a 5-minute traffic backup at many of the toll booths. Finally, I requested that my GPS find an alternate route without tolls. Off we drove onto 2-lane roads with breathtaking views of old towns, farms, orchards, churches, and lakes. We toured the Tuscan Italian countryside like I never thought we could. Also, I used it to take me to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italian beachside communities and the Port Civitavecchia.
I even used it while on my Mediterranean cruise. I would see land in the distance and wonder where we were. I just turned my GPS on and within a moment, I was able to see our location. I also used it in the Greek Isles…Mykonos to be exact. It’s great if you want to rent a scooter for a few hours and not lose your way.
Make sure that your GPS can accept this card. I had to do some research to see if this was compatible with my unit. I used the Garmin Nuvi 265W and it worked great.

Garmin City Navagator for Europe – Andrew B. Martorana – LeRoy, NY, USA
My wife and I were going to Europe, and having little knowledge or the languages, we bought the Garmin City Navigator for Europe. I must say, it was a godsend!!! We never could have gotten around with maps alone. We were even able to find our rental car every time we took walking tours. It is a very worthwhile investment
Not Happy – World Trav –
I purchased the SD card for the purpose of navigating the streets of various European cities via the “pedestrian option”. Unfortunately I ran in to difficulty because the GPS, more often than not, did not produce the correct route. When the route was correctly indicated the “turn left, turn right” responses were delayed and proved to be ineffective. I tried the card with a second Garmin unit and the same problems occurred.
Use of Gamin NUVI in Portugal – Warren A. Seitz – Surprise, AZ
Could not have driven in Portugal without the Garmin NUVI Europe road map information. Porto to Nazere to the Algarve to Lisbon – clear driving instruction and displays. Will never drive in a foreign (or the U.S.) country without our Garmin and up-to-date maps.

I am a volunteer in the search and rescue unit in Arizona. In our unit alone, we have 4 of the Garmin 60 csx and more volunteers will be adding this unit to their personal gear. We have found the 60 csx easy to program and be able to follow inputed waypoints easily. The screen is easy to view at a distance. It is extremely useful on the trackback feature after finding a lost subject and be able to follow the route back to base. It seems to be a rugged unit and so far and has stood up to some harsh road, weather, and trail travels. The signal strength is very good in canyons and under trees. The time after turn on to navigate is quicker then most other units I have used. I wish that Garmin would offer a TOPO map for state by state,as I have the Mountain West – South reigon and it is not detailed enough to show the FR roads we frequently have to travel.

Amateur tattooists are on the rise. Boys and girls with no formal training get a hold of tattoo guns

Amateur tattooists are on the rise. Boys and girls with no formal training get a hold of tattoo guns and become “artists” over night. Elin Glad asks how this looked upon amongst professionals and if it’s safe to get a tattoo from an amateur?

Tattooing has become very popular over the last years. TV-shows like Miami Ink, London Ink and LA Ink are helping the art of tattooing to gain even more popularity around the world. The tattoo trend has also inspired people with no previous experience in tattooing to buy tattoo guns on the internet. A search on eBay for tattoo guns has more than 8, 500 hits.

“I got my tattoo done in Alanya two years ago by a guy who worked at my hotel,” says Cathrin Hansen. “I was sceptical when I came to get my tattoo done. The conditions weren’t exactly sanitary He didn’t seem professional at all, but at least he used a new and clean needle. Coming back from my holiday, I’ve had to get some work done on it to make it straight and to fix the colouring,” Cathrin says.

“There is a big difference between pros and amateurs in general, but not in the standard of work done”

Will Geary, 19, is self-taught and has no formal training. “I’ve always had a love for tattoos and have tattooed myself, my friends and others,” Will says. Will himself has already gotten his throat, chest, left palm, inner finger tips, ankle, feet, toes and even his manhood tattooed. He has also got a left arm sleeve and a sleeve on the upper right leg. “Some of them I’ve done myself and some are done by a professional, ” Will says.

Will says even though it is nice to be in a proper tattoo studio, he is “pretty comfortable” tattooing himself. “Anyone can buy a tattoo gun, it just depends on where you’re using it, either in a tattoo parlour or in a bedroom,” he says.

“My favourite tattoo is the chest piece, ” Will says. ” But it was only done by a professional because I couldn’t reach myself. There is a big difference between pros and amateurs in general, but not in the standard of work done,” Will says. “I do plan on getting a job in the tattoo business and hope to have my own studio some day, ” he continues.

Liam Peskett, 20, works at The Electric Chair in Market Street in Falmouth. He tattoos clients daily and has also tattooed himself. “There is a massive difference between pros and amateurs,” Liam says. “There are always health risks, so absolutely everything has to be sterile. You use new equipment for each new client. The quality of the artwork will always be better from a pro as we have better tattooing techniques, equipment and knowledge,” he says.

Photo title: Liam Peskett tattoos Curt Nash. Taken by Ash Harrison.

People who tattoo with no professional training are often frowned upon by respectable tattoo artists and are called “scratchers”. ” I look down on it very strongly. I’ve worked my ass off, been very stressed and made a lot of sacrifices learning to tattoo. It’s a privilege, not a right. To see someone who doesn’t care about the learning process makes me very angry.”

When getting a tattoo done, there’s always a risk of getting an infection. When breaking the skin’s protective layer, you’re giving bacteria or viruses a chance to get in. “I never go to anyone who’s tattooing from home, or from an unlicensed studio. There are serious health risks involved. The quality of the artwork will be very different from what you get from a pro. I’ve seen a lot of nasty tattoos done by scratchers and lots of photos of infections and scarring,” Liam says.

A normal tattoo will heal in a week. “It’s different from person to person. Colour tattoos tend to be worked on a little more so can take a little longer,” Liam says. Your body interprets getting a tattoo as getting 2nd degree sunburn. “The tattoo may get a bit red and swollen. It will form a thin layer of scab, a lot like the peely skin you get from a sunburn. After this layer has flaked off, your tattoo is healed,” Liam explains.

When getting an infection you will notice that your tattoo gets more painful and red and you can feel a warmth coming from the tattooed area. Red streaks might appear around the tattoo, it can smell bad and pus might come out from it. “You will usually notice quite fast if you have an infection,” Liam says.

Getting an infection from being tattooed could be dangerous. The Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a bacteria discovered in recent tattoo infections. It is resistant to most anti-biotics and penicillin and difficult to treat. This infection is on of the common “hospital infections” and not common elsewhere. Many doctors might therefore try to treat it as a minor skin infection, causing the MRSA bacteria to spread throughout the body damaging skin, bone and internal organs. This fortunately happens rarely, but might make you more aware of professionalism and hygiene when choosing your tattoo artist.

Both classes of Creative marketing are really busy at the moment.

KM08 is making a marketing campaign for Tourism in Skåne under the watchful eye of their tutor Hans-Erik Duck in the course Lateral marketing. The class has been divided in to groups of four & five and they have their presentation at Thursday. It is the end of 7 weeks of hard work, long nights and careful studies of the market. From week 1-20 next year all the students are having internships and after that all that remains is the examination work that concludes the whole education.

KM09 is in the final weeks of the course commercial operation with Staffan Olofsson. Ten weeks has nearly past and I think they are all happy to start the next one! It is a very demanding course and some of them has been forced to confront their biggest fear; math! They have a presentation and one test to go next week. Next course is new media & technology with Anders Printz.

The format for Creative Marketing is focus on the business world. So far the students have been able to listen to Bodil Jönsson, Torbjörn Jörgensen and Stina Tjebbes. One class has visited TBWA in Copenhagen and listened to Paul Clements. Ivana Hrdlickova, information and communication manager at IKEA Försäljnings AB and Lars Carlson, senior advisor at Inter IKEA Systems have been giving lecturers. However, a lot, actually millions of customers choose to go directly to eBay top their holiday shopping online . This is because a lot of online consumers are able to purchase excellent finds on eBay. However, there are actually more ways to find the really good deals as you shop on eBay.

Every day, there are hundreds or even thousands of items that are listed on eBay which end with just a couple of bidders or even no bidders at all. This is because these are the items that are listed with misspelled descriptions or product titles. These misspelled items are not displayed when searched in eBay so there are just a few people who are able to locate them and bid on them. A lot of these items usually end up unsold.

I don’t feel like this is one of my best stories. I know Silje and Ceri, the students, so getting comments from them was easy. The tricky part was getting Nicola, the Communications Administrator for Nova International to actually comment on this at all. There was a press conference for the event the Friday before, but I wasn’t able to go to Portsmouth. Ben, the leader of Mr Men and Little Miss Running Team was easier to get a hold of, but he didn’t understand my accent at first.

I didn’t get any particularly strong quotes, and the story is kind of tame. I really annoyed me that I couldn’t get my photos developed in time for the deadline. I guess I’m just gonna have to do better on my next story!

Students Silje Marie Kristiansen and Ceri Mai Jones participated in the Bupa Great South Run in Southsea, Portsmouth on Sunday 25.

Mr Men and Little Miss Running Team is the running team for CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA which Silje and Ceri were part of this Saturday.

The passionate Illustration students have managed to collect £500. “We’ve been sponsored by friends, family and teachers, and have placed collecting buckets in bars and in the cafeteria at Woodlane,” Silje said. “We’ve been training a lot to be able to run the whole 10 miles and I for one have shaped up. This has been a very fun experience for us and we are considering running next year as well to see if our time has improved.” Silje said

“CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA are dependent on voluntary donations and our running team contributes a great deal to fighting Britain’s biggest childhood cancer,” said Ben, the leader of the running team. “You get loads of advice on how to get in shape for the run on our web page, so why not make it a fun project?” he asked.

“For the weekend we stayed at a pretty shabby hostel with two people we’d never met,” Silje said. “We had to sleep at the Plymouth train station for six hours on our way home,” she continued. “The train arrived in Falmouth in the morning giving us fifteen minutes to get to our lecture.” Despite the long journey and the not exactly five-star accommodation, Silje and Ceri were content. “It was for a good cause, so it was definitely worth it,” Silje said.

“If you want to help CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA In other ways than running there are lots of creative ways,” Ben said. “Quiz nights, flea markets or lotteries for example.”

There were around 21,000 runners participating in the BUPA Great South Run. “Runs are held all over England, in the US and even in Berlin,” said Nicola Hedley, Communications Administrator for Nova International, organisers of the Bupa Great South Run. The runners raise over 8 million pounds for a broad variety of charities every year. “We are proud to have world champion marathon runners like Catherine Ndereba participating in our runs, but you and your contribution is equally important to us,” Nicola said.

The difference between Wishful Thinking and Work is not Attitude. It is not in the quality of Imagin

The difference between Wishful Thinking and Work is not Attitude. It is not in the quality of Imagination. It is a Plan. Jet propulsion is potential until it lifts off the launch pad. I do a lot of Work without getting Ready. This wastes remaining fuel I need to get to the moon.

When I get Ready to Go shopping, it works best if I have a list. When I get Ready to climb a mountain, it works best if I have a list. My list is my Plan. It’s my map. My compass. If it doesn’t work, I make a more detailed list. When I Work with my Heart I get Ready with patience. It’s the whole list.

Each climbing team and Cult of One ascent group has Knowledge of who they need on their team. This is not Emotional Intelligence. It is Intelligence by Gestalt.

There’s a weatherman with Deep Reading Techniques. He can foretell within a few hundred feet in Time. He has courage. He tells you when Destiny is at Work on the Mountain.

Intelligence by Gestalt installs a navigator who needs no compass, no map or familiarity with the mountain. Knowledge of Time and Space is essential. A compass, map and experience are bonus. Experience only hurts when it teaches you Nothing. What is Missing may hurt longer. Time investment derivatives may require professional advice. Do not attempt alone above 12,000 feet.

The Blue Sky of Heaven meets mountain peak. This is a Meeting of Heaven and Earth. Materia of the world forms. This requires a logistical specialist for coordination. And where there is materia there is Work Moving Matter (WMM) and a porter for hefting those loads up the mountain keeps broken backs happy. It is preferable if this entity is a geologist and expert in the physics of snow.

It is spiritual mountain etiquette to bring back shells in same condition they ascended. Internal mountain & emergency medicine critically different than sea level. Convenient for aesthetics if this person is a chef, too. Healing herbs, nutrition and such.

For posterity, a photographer is useful.

Mt. Adams spoke to me about my cognitive and neuromuscular skills at higher altitude. (a) Will work with Dave and Thayne at Body link to devise a 20 minute routine of hand and finger exercises (b) Will resume juggling and body blade on balance board for proprioceptive and vestibular recruitment (c) include two 10 minute sessions on versaclimber (d) find windy environment to practice weekly tent assembly and pack loading (e) daily pack and repack pack (f) drop 15-20 pounds of gear – yikes! (g) review equipage (h) increase lower body strength (i) devise better methods for medicating and keeping glucometer warm

I measured my ability to recruit oxygen. I made note of the status of my lungs through the night. No significant symptoms of altitude sickness. (i) make note of diabetic diet, gorp, candies; (ii) gastric motility reduced at altitude and by diabetes.

Self care appropriate for extreme conditions. Good judgment exercised. Minimal soreness to muscles.

Without a trekking pole team there would be no climb. My goal was to test trekking poles. They are an essential part of my equipment. Many thanks to everyone who helped choose, navigate purchasing rituals, and provide the funds for a starving climber. There’s almost Everything Else at Wilderness. I must complete a category of Equipment Review, Camera, Fleece, Sleeping Bag &c.

I share my first attempts at digital photography. It’s not analog. It’s all my eyes and hands can manage. It’s heavier equipment. I’ll need a neutral density filter. And a wider angle lens. More batteries. A harness to keep the camera inside my coat so it doesn’t freeze. Along with my glucometer.

After an Ordeal Nothing builds confidence like a test of confidence. Thank you Mt. Adams. Thank you many hands and helpers. For scientific purposes, it was a busy 48 hours. Personally, it was an eternity in paradise.

I didn’t summit. Maybe in urgency to get Somebody Else down. No Body Else was on the mountain. Spirits of Warriors who used my lookout over the centuries. Weather broke within a few thousand feet of the summit. Wind gusting 70 mph. Snow and freezing rain. Dangerous conditions. Manageable. Not worth Unnecessary Trouble.

Week 18 on the Port Gamble to Talkeetna Trail. Seventy-Six Weeks to Get Ready for the Great One. Approach and Preparation are not Wishful Thinking. Mt. Adams Work List to follow.

Navigator

I have often worked with professionals who are on their way, climbing the corporate ladder. They

I have often worked with professionals who are on their way, climbing the corporate ladder. They’ve done everything right – taken the right jobs, worked harder than the people around them, developed good relationships with their leaders, and so on. And then…they hit a wall.

“You need to be more strategic,” they’re told.

“But what does that mean?!” they cry. And, often, they get very few specific answers.

Being Strategic seems to be like the It factor for a performer. People know it when they see it, but it is hard to pin down and put into words.

If you are struggling with this, consider:

Strategy – deals with the longer term, asks “where are we going and why?” and perhaps most importantly “where should we be going?”

Tactics – deal with the details of how to get there

To use another analogy. think of driving a car.

You can drive a car and reach a specific destination, even if you don’t know what that destination is, as long as someone navigates for you. You make tactical decisions and take action to brake, turn, and accelerate in the right places. Your ’strategic partner’ is your navigator. They know where are you are going – literally ’seeing the bigger picture’. If you do not know where you are are going, are you going to be able to add anything of value to a discussion about what route to take? No.

But, if you do know the destination, and have a broader knowledge of the world around you, you can say, “It would be better to take the 108 because there’s construction on the beltway.” Or, “There’s a better place that’s closer. Let’s go there instead.”

So, in the business world, if a key factor is having a broader view, how do you gain it? Here are some tips:

#1: Get to know more about the business world outside your company.

You have no excuse for not doing this. There are innumerable free or cheap resources. You have instant, online access to the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, the BBC. A forward-thinking periodical I absolutely love is Fast Company, and they have online access as well. There are a bazillion blogs and websites out there. Do you have an iPod? Go to iTunesU. You can download presentations from pre-eminent business leaders – for free.

#2: Pay attention to what is going on in your business community.

Again, there are many free or low-cost, easy-to-access resources. BizJournals operates Business Journals in 40 cities in the US, and have online resources, some free. I get a daily email blast of headlines and selected stories for my local area. It takes me probably less than 10 minutes a day to stay on top of what’s happening. If you have an Economic Development Commission or similar entity, they are usually excellent sources of information on what’s growing and changing in the area.

#3: Keep up with leading research in your field.

I’m not talking about the re-hashed stuff you see in most professional association journals. (Sorry, but it’s true, unless you’re in a medical/research/academic field. I do think they have their use, but it’s not in this arena.) Subscribe to a peer-reviewed academic journal or just search them online and buy copies of only the articles that interest you. Or, see the note above about iTunesU. Researchers from leading schools, including MIT, Stanford and Cambridge openly discuss their research – for free!

#4: Talk to others in your company outside of your department.

It sounds simplistic, but it’s astonishing how narrow most people’s views are! You know what I’m talking about – the silo effect. You’ve probably complained about it before. But, if you take the initiative to learn how your actions affect other departments, or what they are working on that might affect you, how do you think that will affect your decisions? Your actions?

When you implement the above practices, you are in a much better position to be a ‘navigator’, to get your head out of the day-to-day ‘how do we get there’, to speak up and influence the direction of your team or your company. Then, you are on your way to being Strategic.

Coming next…Strategic Self-Presentation
