Now for my Muslim friends specially, I wanted to discuss its presence and importance in Islam. As Islam is so diverse in its nature, Navroz is not celebrated by every sect as some sects didn’t take forward this tradition with them but we can see that it existed even in the era of Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H.). When Hazrat Salman Farsi entered into the circle Islam, Hazrat Muhammad being a keen observer and respecter of diversity, gave Navroz in the course of his life. Our Prophet also prayed for Muslims on this special day so with the entrance of Hazrat Salman Farsi Islam also got a gift of Navroz. Then the ritual also became a more important facet of Islam when the son of Hazrat Ali, Hazrat Hussain got married with SheharBano, the daughter of Iranian King.

Zahira Dhalwani, from Ottawa, has just composed a Navroz Mubarak song (a song of Hope and New Beginnings) for all to listen to and share with family and friends. (Lyrics/music composition, vocals and recording by Zahira).

She has also released a Canadian Golden Jubilee CD called Shukriya whose tracks 1 (Shukriya) and 3 (Aavechhe Mawla Maara) were included in Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Golden Jubilee Visit to Ottawa Arrival video (available for viewing at TheIsmaili.org). The 7 tracks on Shukriya were also composed, sung and recorded by her.   Shukriya is available at all Canadian Jamati Literature Counters.

Few festivals cross the boundaries of both culture and religion. Noruz begins today in Iran, but the thoroughly ecumenical holiday is also celebrated in central Asia and the Caucasus, and among Kurds, Ismailis and Parsees. The majority of the people sprucing up their homes and calling their mothers are Shia Muslims, but Noruz originated as a Zoroastrian holy day.

About Nowruz:

Nowrūz Persian نوروز /Kurdish نه‌ورۆز /noʊruz/ ↔ [noʊɾuːz]; with various local pronunciations and spellings, meaning ‘New Day’)/Turkish Nevruz is the traditional new year holiday celebrated by Iranian peoples, having its roots in Ancient Iran. Apart from the Iranian cultural continent (Greater Iran), the celebration has spread in many other parts of the world, including parts of Central Asia, South Asia, Northwestern China, the Crimea, and some ethnic groups in Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo and the Republic of Macedonia.

Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the Iranian year and is a secular holiday. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox, which usually occurs on March 21 or the previous/following day depending on where it is observed. As well as being a Zoroastrian holiday and having significance amongst the Zoroastrian ancestors of modern Iranians. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the Jewish festival of Purim, is probably adopted from the Persian New Year.

The term Nowruz first appeared in Persian records in the second century AD, but it was also an important day during the time of the Achaemenids (c. 648-330 BC), where kings from different nations under the Persian empire used to bring gifts to the emperor (Shahanshah) of Persia on Nowruz.

Today is Pateti, the Parsi New Year. This is according to the Shehanshahi calendar, different from the Iranian calendar which celebrates 21 March, Spring Equinox as Navroz. Though we celebrate both, Pateti is celebrated more by Parsis, and Navroz by Iranis.  Happy New Year!

Today is an awesome day – 21st March 2008 because many religions are celebrating different religious and auspicious occassions on the same date. This shows diversity in faith and we all need to embrace it with respect for each other. Every religion teaches many good things so one should follow one which brings him/her the satisfaction and let others follow this practice too.

Today the muslims are celebrating Eid-e-Miladun Nabi of our beloved Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H.

Zorastrians and Muslims are celebrating Navroz, the new year and arrival of spring.

Mawlid al-Nabiy, the anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, is one of the three largest celebrations of the Islamic calendar. Muslims in Canada and around the world celebrate the Prophet’s birth, life, and teachings with prayers, readings from the Qu’ran, feasts, good deeds, and compassion toward the poor.
