here’s an early preview of my EAST jersey…hoping to get this done by tomorrow night coz i’ll be away for 3 days for which i will have no internet connectivity…i think the numbers are the only things that needs to be done here…

NBA Live 2006 does a little bit better with the system, but not much improved. The franchise mode is better, and the game is fun to watch, graphics and audio are good. Also this is still a fun basketball game for people to play against each other. However, the superstar abilities can be imbalanced and the graphics engine is again. Overall though, it is still a fun game and if you like to upgrade every year, go for it.

Pros:

+ Superstar abilities are fun to watch

+ Still a fun arcade-style basketball game

+ Marginal improvements in depth to franchise mode

Cons:

- Not all superstars are useful

- Superstar abilities can be imbalanced

- Graphics engine is aging

I remember a simpler time. It was called last year. Up to then, the playing of games was a reward in itself. I dedicated weeks of my life to San Andreas, hunting down Unique Jumps for no other prize than the knowledge I’d jumped it. When my wife would ask me, “Why did you go on that murderous rampage?”, I’d tell her. “Because it was there. Plus, the Bradly Guide told me.” I also flew a Cessna real time from Glasgow Airport to JFK in Flight Simulation 2005 (only to crash on final approach) just because I had nothing else planned that day. I didn’t expect to be rewarded for it, even if I had been able to land safely.

When I was playing online with my co-xbobber, it was usually just to catch up, shoot bad guys and enjoy the fact that I’d get mown down at the exact same spot on the stairs during the Hotel mission of Black Arrow.

Then the world changed. Forever.

And ever.

I realised this when I was sitting with glassy eyes, simulating a season on NBA Live 06 after spending an entire afternoon simulating seasons on Madden 06 and with the plan to simulate a season on NHL 2K7 later on.

When did I stop playing games and just start simulating them? Why do I need a £300 console on a £500 TV to do this, when I’m pretty sure I can get Excel to do something similar? High-Def season simulation doesn’t really require the HD bit, does it?

Of course, the reason is obvious. I’ve become an Achievement Point magpie. I wasn’t always this way.

Like most things, it starts small. First night with my 360, I picked up 20 Achievement Points and, yes, I admit it, I got a little buzz out of it. My fellow xbobber phoned me to congratulate me. It felt like I was coming home. Over the next couple of months, I would add to my total, but not with any particular zeal. I was on 1800 or so when I bought Test Drive Unlimited and it was at this point that I think the obsession really kicked in. 700 odd points in a fairly short period of time and suddenly I was within sniffing distance of Steve (not literally), maybe around 1400 behind.

That was when I entered “easy 360 achievements” into Google and the path downwards was plotted in and confirmed.

I bought Madden the next day and 2 hours of fairly dull gameplay later, I’d amassed 600 points. Two days later, I’d sat for another few hours and watched 30 seasons being simulated. Not the most exciting afternoon of my life, but strangely better than actually playing Madden 06 properly. 1000 points. Just like that.

Steve phoned to query the sudden spike in my Gamerscore. I don’t think it was something he was precious about beforehand, but suddenly there was a sense of worry in his voice. I told him I’d have passed his total by later that day. The reason I could be so confident about this was because I’d just bought NBA 2K6 and NBA Live 06 because I couldn’t remember which was supposed to be the easiest and their covers are really similar.

I gave NBA 2K6 a whirl, used the sliders (a Godsend to the AP addict), set the game time to 12 minute quarters as had been advised and realised at the end of the first quarter (76-1 ahead) that it might not take quite as long as anticipated. Still, 1000 points in an hour can’t be that bad.

Playing four games of NBA Live 06 and simulating eight seasons got me 960 points. The remaining 40 need someone who’ll let me beat them online, but no one ever seems to play it. Negotiations are underway to buy another xbox and copy of the game so I can simulate a friend to play it with.

So that’s me. 2960 points in exchange for £60. Seems fair enough. If only Steve hadn’t gone out to buy the games himself … that’s where the plan falls down.
