After an interesting week in the NBA, I bring you the Power Rankings for Week 4. Combine the return

After an interesting week in the NBA, I bring you the Power Rankings for Week 4. Combine the return of Pau Gasol to the Lakers with a 3-0 week, a loss by the Hawks and Suns to the Hornets, and a Boston mini-free fall, the Lakers move back up to the top while the Celts drop all the way down to 10 on the list this week after losing three of five and needing a buzzer-beater to beat the lowly Knicks yesterday. Here are the rest of the rankings.

5. Dallas Mavericks (10-3)– Dallas is a team that is surprisingly flying under the radar despite some pretty big wins. They took out the Spurs at home in overtime but struggled against an injury-depleted line-up. However with no big losses and wins against the Spurs, Lakers and Bucks, the Mavs are right now a top five team in the league.

4. Orlando Magic (11-3) – Despite losing Jameer Nelson to a knee-injury for a couple of weeks, the Magic keep rolling along with wins. Vince Carter has stepped in and carried the scoring load for the defending Eastern Conference champs.

3. Phoenix Suns (11-3) – The Suns continue to surprise, whether by the games they win or lose. Rolling along and currently in first in the Pacific division, the Suns have plenty of wins, with their only losses coming to last years Finalists the Lakers and Magic. That was until they were shocked by the Hornets, however they continue to exceed expectations and give the Lakers a run for their money in the division, for now.

2. Atlanta Hawks (11-3) – Surprisingly, we’re four weeks into the season and the Atlanta Hawks are still the East’s cream of the crop. They have taken on all comers and had big win after big win, but a loss to New Orleans dropped them from the perch in the Power Rankings. With a big game against Orlando this week the Hawks will have another opportunity to prove they belong in the conversation of championship contenders.

1. Los Angeles Lakers (10-3) – What a difference a week makes huh? Last week the Lakers were reeling from back-to-back losses to Denver and Houston, having lethargic second halves in both games and losing pretty badly. Fast-forward to this week, the Lakers get Pau Gasol back and suddenly again are the deepest, most dangerous team in the league. I don’t care if you’re a Laker hater or not but Kobe’s behind the backboard shot last night against the Thunder was INSANE, and any Laker game you watch has the potential for a Shannon Brown dunk on someone.

Kobe Bryant is the best basketball player I have ever seen. There I said it! Before you get angry a

Kobe Bryant is the best basketball player I have ever seen. There I said it! Before you get angry and call me crazy, allow me to state his case. Yes, Michael Jordan elevated the game. There is no question about it – he raised the bar. MJ had every ballplayer, male and female alike, high school, college, weekend warrior, or average hoopster, wanting to be like Mike.

Having acknowledged his tremendous influence on the game globally, brings me to why I make such a claim. MJ influenced the game of today that every player that ever plays from now on will always be compared to him. So, if one looks at the players of today as his children, which one best reflects his father?

Kobe is at this stage of his career and one could say he is just reaching his prime. However, he is a better shooter than MJ, has better handles, has a better left hand, and the same killer instinct. He is also as fierce a defender. I can hear the fellas in my barbershop now, “you crazy!” Were it not for Colorado, and the Shaq incidents, many would have conceded this quite some time ago. When Kobe’s name is mentioned, his critics only talk about off the court behavior. What about MJ’s records and achievements? As was said, Kobe is just now reaching his prime and has more championships than MJ did at this stage. However, whether or not he gets MJ’s records in and of themselves is no real measure, for Kobe’s NBA is filled with MJ imitators. Today’s league has many more talented players for whom the game just comes easily.

In 1984, when MJ entered the league, many of these players were not born, and others were toddlers, they learned the game by watching Jordan. They wore his shoes, wore baggy shorts because of him, some even tried to stick their tongues out in a similar fashion. With all of that, Kobe still dominates a league built on the Jordan brand. He more than any player since, not just resembles MJ, but also has shown the work ethic to build on that brand. Bryant is fueled by the hatred, whatever he is challenged to do he does. Jordan never had to play through a Colorado type incident, people chanting rapist, flying to court then back to work, all the while excelling at his craft. Jordan’s image was so carefully protected; one wonders how it would have held up under such trial.

MJ too spoke harshly to teammates. It is revisionist history to make it appear as though everyone who played alongside Jordan just loved him. He helped get a coach fired; players traded, and early on was considered selfish on the court. This is not to take anything away from him, only to say that when you are that driven, that focused and the fire burns that hot in you, people will be affected in different ways.

When questioned away from the spotlight, most of the players in the NBA admit that Kobe is the best among them. LeBron (James) may be bigger, stronger and faster, but does not have that killer instinct. He is a businessman and basketball player but, Kobe (like Mike), was born to play basketball. The league is filled with great talent, I would rank Dwayne Wade behind Kobe, however, LeBron, Carmelo (Anthony) and others are making a name for themselves.

So there it is my case for Kobe as the best. Not the best person, teammate, husband or father, just the best at his profession. I hope my doctor is a good husband, but I definitely need him to be a great doctor. My barber may not like the person who works in the chair next to him, but please don’t let that affect my Saturday appointment. Likewise, Kobe may not be many things but the one thing he is is a phenomenal basketball player… the best I have ever seen. Let the hate continue!

For anybody familiar with his 5,000 word columns on espn, that Bill Simmons’ The Book of Baske

For anybody familiar with his 5,000 word columns on espn, that Bill Simmons’ The Book of Basketball clocked it at damn near 700 pages is not any sort of surprise. In its hardcover form, lugging it on my commute represented legitimate weight lifting. It also made me look smarter, like a PhD candidate or something. Of course, I probably needed to take the cover flap off to obscure what I was reading. But I digress. The book is Bill Simmons’ take on the history of the NBA. He has opined in his columns that basketball is his favorite sport and the Celtics, his first love. Sometimes I wondered if his columns were just homerism, and on the football and baseball angles, they certainly were. However, his knowledge and passion for basketball is real – the sheer amount of research that went into this book is incredible.

As for the quality of the book itself? Well, the above paragraph probably describes the book quite nicely – it is packed to the gills with information, rantings and his passion – it is also very very long. For instance, his section on the 96 best players of all time ends up taking nearly half the book’s length. The book is full of lists – the best teams of all time, his all-this, all-that, Simmons’ recapping of the entirety of the history of the NBA and how eras fundamentally differ. The individual sections are a mixture of new information, but they also contain a decent amount of material from his columns that seem reworked. Of course, I have a disorder that compelled to read all of these columns, so I know them – but that’s me not having a life. But I try to be objective. Simmons’ voice, to the unfamiliar, is as pop culture-littered as Chuck Klosterman, without necessarily the verbal flair. Klosterman is an outsider to life’s rich pageant – Simmons is in the fray. Whether that makes a great writer, I am not sure, but it makes a sure voice with authority and perspective – an essential for the good essayist. Indeed, some of the chapters are brilliant. In particular, his painstakingly detailed breakdown of Russell vs Chamberlain was an eye opener and provided a more educated assessment than any I have encountered.

Also interesting his his introduction of “The Secret”, the inspiration for his book. Simmons advances that there is a specific trait to winning in a team setting, that is tangible and true. He tries to define it – frames it as a “force” of sorts. The sort of trait that forces athletes to simply not be able to properly articulate to media types or fans. Indeed anybody on a good team understands it, that ubuntu sort of magic. But then he pooh poohs statistical analysis in defending his secret analysis, although indeed the work done in that end is getting at the same questions he is – but using data instead of anecdotal evidence. Fortunately, he acknowledges some of this in footnotes – copious and a comic device here. Ultimately the book is not precisely a page turner – but it plays well as a kind of super-almanac. The sections are all engaging and interesting – though it does not beg to be read in order as I did. But it is a good book to have in the collection, no doubt.

I’ve compiled a list of the NBA’s most underrated and least talked about ballers who have ridiculous upside. So wake up, get your coffee and don’t sleep on the following:

CDR leads the Nets in scoring.

Chris Douglas-Roberts: I love guys with two last names. The second-year stud who was a teammate of Derrick Rose at Memphis has come into his own depsite playing for the woeful Nets. He is currently averaging over 18 points and 5 rebounds per game while leading the Nets in scoring. At 6′7” Douglas-Roberts is an above average perimeter defender and getting better.

Luis Scola: The 6′9 import from Argentina made a little name for himself last year during the Rockets series with the Lakers. But this year he has taken it to a new level averaging a double-double (15 point and 10 rebounds). A scrappy defender, Scola has that ability to get under the skin of opponenets and do ‘dirt.’

Jason Thompson: In his second year removed from uknown Rider University, this power foward is making strides for the Sacremento Kings starting in every game this year. While we hear little of west coast teams other the Lakeshow, Thompson has an impressive 14.5 point and 9.5 rebound per game average. The Kings are +20 when he’s on the court.

Russell Westbrook: Oklahoma City does have a team, the Thunder. He will soon be a household name; Westbrook has been a star since last year coming out of UCLA. His points and assists are up from his rookie year and he fills up stat sheets: 16.4 points, 7.1 assists, and 5 rebounds per game as a 6′3” guard.

Is Marc better than Pau?

Marc Gasol:

While his brother gets all the ’pub’ in L.A., dare I say Marc in Memphis is as good? Known as a good back to the basket and help-side defender, Marc is having a career year with 15 points and 11 boards a game. He is shooting over 60% while leading the team in blocks and ranks second in steals.

Kevin Martin: This kid has been on the rise over the past two seasons, and if you haven’t heard of him, you should. Despite only playing in five games this year, the 6′7” skinny guard (a career 17 point per game scorer) is averaging 30 points per game and shooting 44% from the arc. He is a scoring phenom.

Granger is the modern day Scottie Pippen.

Danny Granger: Another player that you should know about. Probably the most known on this list, Granger is the Pacer’s do-it-all guy. Having a career year with 24 ppg and just under 7 rpg, the versatile 6′8” forward is a modern day Scottie Pippen and fills up the offensive and defensive stat sheet.

Brook Lopez: I hated this guy in college, but the big man out of Stanford is one of the only good things happening for the New Jersey Nets. In a league with no centers, Lopez is developing into a guy who can score in the post and defend the basket. He’s getting 17 and 9 while blocking 2.7 shots per game.

Ryan Anderson: By no means a star, Anderson has added another piece to the 2009 Eastern Conference champion Orlando Magic. Hedo Turkoglu departed for Toronto, but the 6′11” sharp shooting Anderson will be a key to Orlando’s success. A spot starter averaging 13 ppg and 4 rpg in his second year, Anderson can stretch the defense giving Dwight Howard room to operate and an option to pass out of double teams.

Tyreke Evans:This kid is turning out to be a personal favorite of mine. The rookie who took over for Derrick Rose after leaving Memphis is another young talent in Sacremento. His physically imposing 6′6” 220 lb frame makes him a tough match up for any NBA guard. Evans is getting 18, 4.5 and 4.5 in his first 11 games with the Kings and should challenge Brandon Jennings for rookie of the year. Still developing, Evans has a tremendous upside offensively and has shown good insticts on the defensive end.

New York area sports have triumphed in the past few years- the Giants and Eli Manning represent the city well in the NFL, and won a Super Bowl in 2007; the Yankees won the World Series this past season, and the Rangers and New Jersey Devils have boasted successful ice hockey teams.
The praise for NY sports stops when you talk about the NBA.
The Big Apple is represented by the Knicks and the (New Jersey) Nets. The Knicks are 3-18 with many woes and close games. The Nets have a zero in the win column and are still seeking their first win after 13 losses.
Going into Saturday’s game, the Nets probably felt confident. They were playing a (then) 2-17 team and their most valuable player, Devin Harris, would be returning from a sidelining groin injury.
Despite playing a good game, Harris wasn’t the star of the game.
No, that title belongs to Knicks guard Nate Robinson.
With his team up 98-91 and milliseconds remaining in the game, Robinson made a buzzer shot. In the oppo-Nets (haha, get it?) basket. Despite the fact it didn’t count, Robinson’s teammates seemed disgusted, and it was obvious Knicks’ coach Mike D’Antoni was. D’Antoni chewed Robinson apart once he got to the bench, however, Robinson played in the Celtics/Knicks game.

Maybe this is why so many hoops fans favor NCAA basketball over the NBA? Superfluous attitude, arrogance and a whole lot of nerve were displayed with the shot. You don’t see that kind of stuff in college hoops.
Perhaps the frat-boy is more mature than the professional basketball player.

Gewinner

Danke nochmal an “The Dream“. Allen Iverson, you hear me??

Atlanta Hawks

Dallas Mavericks
10-3? 5-game-winning-streak? Was hab ich verpasst? Weiter so!

Verlierer
Orlando Magic

Dann die “I could be really good” Sache mit den Cleveland Browns. Come on King, Get Focused! Play Ball!

Chris Paul & Byron Scott
Was ist hier los?

Allen Iverson
Wars das? Raus in Memphis? (Imagine That!) Was kommt als Nächstes? Iverson in Ludwigsburg? Bei Alba?

Normally you watch your system for a few games to see if it works. But I’m just jumping in and using it, so here it goes.

There weren’t any games I could as they were tonight so I decided to use a teaser which the system did accept. Keep in mind that while I’m sharing my SU and O/U picks, the spread is the only thing my system tells me about so that is what I’m actually betting on.

4pt teaser:

CHI vs POR; POR -3, o-184

MIN vs LAC; LAC -1.5, o-191.5

I like both of those picks. The system also called the Bucks covering their +9 point spread against Memphis, and I normally would take that but with Redd and Bogut out I’m just not comfortable with making that call. 9 points is a lot and I really think the Grizzlies are overrated here, but with two of their stars out and Redd expecting to return shortly, I could see the Bucks tanking this one.

What value would you attach to talent? What price would you be willing to pay someone for their dedication? How about for your intensity and even plain old ability? Seriously … take a moment and think about this. If you had spent all or most of your childhood, adolescence and young adulthood training and preparing to do what you love to do (on a professional level) what things would you want someone to consider when they negotiate your salary?

Think like a professional athlete for a moment. I think my perspective would have to be explained by showing you what these men and women hear on a pretty regular basis from:

Team Owners:

“Remember now, if you get hurt on the job, there is no workman’s compensation. You are expected to, within reason, get up, shake it off, and keep it moving. Maybe you didn’t sleep well the night before. Who cares? GO TO WORK! Even if a close family member or friend dies, if you are scheduled to work, you will go to work.”

It isn’t just your boss who expects this – he or she is mostly concerned about the thousands of screaming fans in attendance, and possibly millions more watching at home or from various sports bars and other venues. Your team’s owner knows who is going to watch you, critique your performance, take pictures of you at your very worst moment, and plaster these images all over the internet, television and newspapers. He also knows how this will affect the franchise…the brand. You are, after all, a PRODUCT.

Vendors:

“You see, we depend upon you. We are able to make OUR living because of what YOU do. Our clients turn to you for entertainment. We plan major events around what you are doing. We need to sell hot dogs and beer…you can’t let us down now! What will happen to us?”

Endorsers:

“Listen…I need to sell my (insert anything and everything you can possibly think of) and if I put your face on the (insert packaging description), I am sure that my profits will increase! Yes, I will give you a very small percentage of my earnings, but I will complain about it, because you are already making all that money for, I mean … that team is already paying you a hefty salary. I do not care how many expenses you have, I just want to get paid!”

Fans:

“GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME! I can’t believe you dropped that ball! We’re not going to make it to the playoffs this year because of YOU. No home field advantage? What the… What do you mean you have a torn rotator cuff? Suck it UP! All my life I dreamed of playing professional sports…now that I can live through you (since it didn’t work out for me) PLAY THE GAME THE WAY I WOULD HAVE PLAYED IT! What kind of role model ARE you? I want my kids to be able to look up to you! I can’t be a good example as a parent, so I’ve chosen YOU, sports figure, to put on a pedestal and if you do ANYTHING wrong, I will make sure you never play in this league again!”

Granted, if things are going very well for you and your sport, this makes everyone happy and your salary is justified. (Umm…how often does THAT happen?)

Still think professional athletes are overpaid? Tell me what you REALLY think. I’m just sayin…

Destacados:

Paul Pierce: 33-9-6, 6 triples, 1 robo, 2 gorros, 9/17 en campo y 9/10 en libres. Perdió 3 balones y tuvo un domingo especialmente inspirado

A.Bynum: 25-9-0, 1 robos, 2 tapones, 9/11 en campo y 7/7 en libres. Casi infalible

Kobe: 26-6-7, 2 robos, 4/4 en libres y 0 pérdidas. Consistente

Al Harrington: 30-9-2, 5 triples, 1 robo, 10/21 en campo y 5/6 en libres. Gran sexto hombre, pero racheado

Wade: 31-6-3, 3 triples, 1 robo, 3 gorros, 12/21 en campo. Notable

Nash: 20-0-9, 1 triple, 7/8 en campo y 5/5 en libres. Otro consistente

David Lee: 22-15-3, 1 robo, 7/12 en campo y 8/9 en libres. Perdió 5 balones. Un borrón en su gran partido

Jason Williams: 16-5-3, 2 triples, 2 robos, 5/9 en campo y 4/4 en libres. No perdió balones. Gran vuelta de este veterano

Troy Murphy Trophy

K.Perkins: 16-13-1, 4 gorros, 6/7 en campo. Contundencia
