It’s useful to be able to “round” dates to a specific weekday, because, for example meeting dates should be on a Friday afternoon.  Well, that’s my story anyway!  Here’s the OpenOffice Calc code to do this:

=5-WEEKDAY(A1;2)+A1

Put the date into cell A1, and out will pop a Friday.  Which Friday?  The one after Monday or before Saturday and Sunday.

Anda mungkin pernah melakukan pencarian satu atau sejumlah dokumen. Banyak format yang didukung untuk penulisan dokumen, mulai dari format Microsoft Word (*.doc), Open Office (*.odt), Web (*.htm,*.html) atau format yang paling sederhana yaitu plain text (*.txt) & rich text format (*.rtf).

Metode pencarian dapat berbeda-beda. Umumnya, jika kita mengisikan kata kunci lebih dari satu, maka dua atau lebih kata kunci tersebut dianggap terletak berdampingan.

Metode lain yang populer adalah dengan trik near(est) searching. Trik ini mengijinkan anda untuk mencari lebih dari satu kata-kunci yang di antara satu kata kunci dengan kata kunci lainnya terletak di lokasi yang berbeda (terpisahkan oleh satu atau beberapa kata). Google menggunakan hal ini. Jadi kalau anda mencari dua kata kunci “system protection”, mungkin anda dapat menemukan artikel yang berisi seperti ini “this system is …, protection must be configured”. Lihatlah bahwa dari artikel yang diketemukan, letak dari kata kunci “system” dengan kata kunci “protection” tidak berdampingan.

Lebih maju lagi (atau mungkin sudah ada …) dapat dilihat di fungsi help pada Windows Operating System. Anggaplah anda ingin mencari dua kata kunci di artikel help (Windows OS). Tidak hanya kedua kata kunci diketemukan (walaupun keduanya terpisah oleh kata-kata lainnya), tetapi lokasi dari kedua kata kunci tersebut juga dapat diketahui.

Pengembangan berikutnya adalah meskipun, kedua kata kunci dibalik posisinya, dari “system protection” menjadi “protection system”, sistem pencarian juga dapat mencarinya. Lebih lanjut, hasil pencarian dilengkapi dengan penilaian relevansi seperti yang ada di Google, dimana artikel yang dianggap memiliki relevansi tertinggi diletakkan di urutan paling atas.

Saya belum menemukan program search engine dengan karakteristik di atas yang dipergunakan di lingkungan desktop computer (offline searching). Atau pengetahuan saya saja yang belum memadai. “ExtremeFind” adalah program search engine dengan keseluruhan karakteristik di atas, dipergunakan untuk offline searching. Program ini saya buat sebagai experimental project di masa lalu.

Saya ingin perbandingan dengan kenyataan yang ada mengenai sampai seberapa jauh program saya ini mempunyai nilai manfaat. Kelemahan program ini tidak dapat mencari di dokumen dengan format yang populer seperti Microsoft Word (*,doc) dan lainnya. Program ini hanya dapat melakukan pencarian di dokumen dengan format plain text (*.txt).

Kelebihan program ini selain dari memiliki karakteristik – trik pencarian yang telah disebutkan di atas, juga mampu menunjukkan lokasi tepatnya di suatu dokumen yang telah dibuka tanpa menggulung layar (tanpa melakukan scrolling melainkan auto find next).

Uniknya sambil tetap mengijinkan anda melakukan auto find next, program juga tetap melakukan pencarian di lokasi berikutnya (find next) dengan tetap mempertahankan trik pencarian sebagaimana yang dijelaskan sebelumnya (yang mana sifat ini belum saya temukan di search engine lainnya yang pernah ada).

* Quick Tutorial *

1. Sebelum melakukan pencarian, program akan menelusuri keseluruhan folder+subfolder dan mencatatnya, ini dilakukan agar dapat diketahui sampai berapa lama lagi pencarian akan berakhir. Kelemahannya, setiap memulai pencarian akan sangat lama menunggu mendaftar keseluruhan folder+subfolder. Saran saya, hanya untuk pertama kali saja lakukan pencarian dari directory “C:” untuk mendaftarkan keseluruhan folder+subfolder (sekaligus dapat langsung mencari kata kunci). Untuk pencarian kedua atau selanjutnya, matikanlah fungsi pencarian folder+subfolder, dengan tidak mencentang (tidak menandai) di bagian “Update Directories”. Fungsi lainnya dapat anda explorasi dan dicoba sendiri.

2. Telah di uji coba pada Windows 98, XP dan berjalan baik. Dalam pengujian dengan Windows Vista mengalami kegagalan (belum kompatibel). Saya belum sempat melakukan “coding” ulang.

3. Jika dengan keterbatasan pencarian hanya pada format plain text (*.txt) sangat mengurangi nilai dari program ini, cobalah lakukan pencarian hanya pada file-file pemrograman (cocok untuk programmer), karena file-file pemrograman (non-web) cenderung berbentuk plain text (Borland, Visual Basic, dan lain-lain)

Find out who Circe is, find out who your friends are, and who your enemies are. Ignore the Rakshana’s requests and continue employing your magic.

I finished The Sweet Far Thing last night, and was struck in awe (well, awestruck). It wasn’t the ending I was hoping for, but strangely, it fit nicely. Libba Bray is far more talented and descriptive than Stephenie Meyer is in Twilight and the other novels. C’mon! Who doesn’t love an author who puts “She has never lived in the Victorian era, is not British, and has no superpowers, though if she did they would involve being able to eat her weight in Swedish fish without feeling the urgent need to shave her tongue afterward” in the ABOUT THE AUTHOR section? Bray’s ideas are fresh and original. If you do not love her, you must be mad.

Anyway, have someone pry Twilight out of your hands and read and remember A Great and Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels, and The Sweet Far Thing. Instead of viewing that ghastly Twilight movie, read! I get angry if somebody compares Twilight to Harry Potter, but if one were to compare Gemma Doyle to Harry Potter, I actually would not mind. Nothing will ever beat HP, but I believe that Gemma comes pretty close.

Have you checked in adjoining counties and/or states (depending on where they were) for some record of lost ancestors?  In the past, it was common to go to the nearest (or in the case of mountains, rivers, etc.) place to record records, not necessarily the “correct” place.  In addition, what may be one county in this century, may not have been the same county in the time period you are looking in.

Well, I am really missing someone. I cant say who. My day, my nights were all spent with that person. And now when she isn’t there, I am missing her terribly. I am happy there is no work that has come up today. Again idle time and some follow ups.

Why am I missing her? I never bothered about anyone in life. I really didn’t care who came and who went out of my life. But why her out of all the oddities? Oh my God! I keep rehearsing what I should tell her about this and about that through out my day. I realise now that she has made me see and appreciate the small things in life. I never ever felt dull at any point of the day due to my existence. I keep reminding myself to see those small things that she has taught me in her own way. She has become my nearest and dearest even without me knowing.

Oh God! Am I falling into some kind of trap or is it a feeling that has arisen genuinely!!! Guide me Lord!

A new service promises Londoners they’ll never have to spend much time looking for the loo.

Westminster City Council, which covers London’s bustling Oxford Street, the West End, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Thursday launched “SatLav” – a toilet-finding service for cell phone users.

Tourists, theatregoers, shoppers and pub patrons in London’s West End can now text the word “toilet” – and receive a text back with the address of the nearest public facility.

The system, which covers 40 public toilets, pinpoints the caller’s position by measuring the strength of the phone signal.

The texts cost about 50 cents, and most of Westminster’s toilets are free. (link)
