Need for Speed Undercover Review EA’s Need for Speed Franchise hits an all-time low. sssssIf all you

Need for Speed Undercover Review

EA’s Need for Speed Franchise hits an all-time low.

sssssIf all you take from this review is that you shouldn’t buy Need For Speed Undercover, then this review has served its purpose. This game is bad, and if you’ve played the previous Need for Speed games, or other games such as Midnight Club Los Angeles, you’re going to be disappointed.

sssssAs per usual, there’s some sort of cover story for the game, and you’ll find yourself as an undercover cop attempting to infiltrate a crime syndicate. But the story just doesn’t flow well, with repetitive story-based missions revolving around you stealing cars or getting from point A to point B with no sort of real point as to why you’re doing it. There are also live cut-scenes intermittently throughotu the story, featuring real-life acting, but it tends to take away from the experience. While innovative at first, you’ll soon find that you’re either listening to your undercover supervisor Chase repeating the same statements that you need to go deeper and everything’s messed up, or listening to your gang repeatedly getting angry at you when you beat them at races, or complimenting you when you steal cars for them. That’s all there is to the story in essence and the ending is fairly predictable. Overall the storyline is just bad and doesn’t flow well at all.

sssssUnfortunately, the gameplay itself does not make up for the terrible storyline. While at first you’ll find the game modes Sprint (racing from one point to another), Escape (evading the police), Circuit (racing around in a circuit), Cop Takeout (taking out a certain number of cops), Cost to State (Performing $X amount of damage), Outruns (staying ahead of your opponent for 90 seconds) and Highway Battles (getting ahead of your opponent by 300m in a heavy density traffic area) exciting, you’ll soon find they’re all pretty much the same and get very bored. With other games like Midnight Club: Los Angeles, you’ll find yourself wanting to keep playing, and the game feels challenging so that when you finish it, you really feel rewarded. I think that a part of this is that you can press the down button at any time after a race to enter the nearest event, which feels like you’re just doing race after race without just driving for the heck of it. While destroying the feeling of an open space to explore, it at least makes the game that much quicker to finish. Additionally, you’ll find that you don’t really need money in Need for Speed:Undercover, as a fairly decent car can often compete with the fastest cars, and so there’s no real incentive to constantly be upgrading your car or buying a faster version.

sssssAdditionally, there a whole range of problems with how the game handles graphics. For instance, the background isn’t always completely loaded as you’re driving, which means that as you’re driving, you sometimes enter an area in a race that hasn’t been loaded yet and have to wait for it to load. Once the background is loaded, you’ll occassionally find walls appearing in front of you, cars being generated in your way, and funnily enough, cars even appearing randomly in mid-air. I’ve even had the misfortune of driving so far into an unloaded background that the game simply resets me before the area and inevitably loses me the race. Additionally, the way that walls are handled seems to be very strange, as while sometimes you will hit a wall and slow down, sometimes you’ll also be randomly flung into the air or flipped upside down. It takes away from the fun of the game as you’ll end up having to approach corners slower then normal simply to ensure you don’t hit one of these random bumps in the walls. The loading times are also ridiculous, as you’ll find yourself waiting 15-40 seconds for a race to load, and wait 10-25 seconds after a race for the game to auto-save. This means that effectively, you’ll probably end up spending 10-15% of the game simply waiting for games to load.

sssssOn top of all of these problems, the frame-rate can also be extremely terrible in some situations, such as at the start of races or during random intervals in the game. These frame-rate issues and the multitude of graphical problems turn what could have been a fun game into a very frustrating experience. As to the graphics themselves, they’re less than amazing. Cars and scenery look average, and to be honest, NFS:U looks a lot more like a PS2 game than something that belongs on the PS3. There really is absolutely nothing special about the graphics, and a whole lot more could have been done with them. On the other hand, the sound is quite good in terms of replicating what a car sounds like, but the background music is fairly repetitive and will always play the same tracks each time. If you’re going to play in short intervals, it almost feels like you’re listening to the same song on loop, especially as you’re unable to change the music.

sssssReplayability is there in the game, although why anyone would want to replay the races is beyond me. A total of 187 races exist in single-player, with a large amount of them focussed on sprint and circuit events. Additionally, multiplayer games are plentiful and you’ll have no trouble finding a game, and there is also a bonus event to be played online. While you have the typical circuit and dash (sprint) modes, you also have Cops and Robbers, where players must steal money from one point and deliver it to another point without other players taking them out (Think capture the flag). However, many players also simply leave the game on to get a trophy for participating in 119 games, and I’ve played games with other players where no other person is moving at all. This limits how fun this mode is as you’ll quite often find yourself being the only one who’s actually participating at all.

sssssLastly, even the trophies are not redeeming. A large majority of them are bronze, and centre on story-related items or relate to races you’ll have to do if you want to get the platinum trophy anyway. You’ll also have to finish all 187 races to get the coveted Platinum trophy, and well, this game really just doesn’t motivate you enough to do that. The trophies also come very slowly, and it almost seems like a waste of time to collect them.

sssssIn conclusion, EA has really let the franchise down with Need for Speed: Undercover, delivering a game with backwards ideas that really takes away from the game. You’ll find yourself frustrated throughout due to the random bugs and flaws, and really feeling like you’re playing a buggy PS2 game. By the end of it, you’ll be glad to just throw it out and move on.

Summary

Storyline: 4.0 – A very basic story that really doesn’t add anything to the experience.

Graphics: 4.0 – Problems with the frame-rate, random bugs and poor graphics really set this game backwards.

Sound: 6.0 – While the sound is alright, there are no options to change the background music and it quickly becomes repetitive and annoying.

Gameplay: 3.5 – Basic and unvarying gameplay that just doesn’t seem fun at all.

Replayability: 7.0 – While there is a lot of replayability in the game, there is very little incentive to go back for it.

Trophies: 4.5 – The trophies aren’t easy, don’t feel challenging, take a long time to get and you won’t be having fun getting them.

Overall: 4.5.

Rent it or Buy it?: Neither! Avoid this game if you can.

I managed to watch the rest of ‘Match Point’ in the end. Review available by following the Flixter link to your right (and down).

This day has just turned into a long and painful one. My bus to Brasov was at 14:35 (and takes about 3 hours) and I was at the station before 14:00 but you have to buy tickets from the driver. What I didn’t realise was that it is actually a minibus and when I went out of the inside waiting area at 14:25 it was already full. Boll~cks

So I now have to wait until 17:00 and I’ve no gurantee of getting on that. I’ve a feeling they might be funny about my bag as well because of the limited space. Boll•cks.

Mosquito repelent is high on my purchase list now, I’m sick of litteral little bleeders. Boll¥cks.

I’m also not appreciating the Romanian approach to queuing, I’m going to have to start dishing out some pain soon.

You have probably gathered I’m in a right mood now, my stinking hangover isn’t helping matters. It’s at times like these that I put on this by Paul Simon. I defy anyone not to sing along to that bad boy, if you don’t you must be a cylon. One of the highlights of my trip in the US of America was when that came on the radio while I was speeding through a beautiful forest on route from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. I’ve just found the bluegrass version.

I just gave an old man my seat and he and his daughter were very grateful. Surely that will get me a place on the next bus. You know, instant karma, ying and yang, tit for tat, no?

Need for Speed Undercover on the iPhone is making the time pass quicker than it might. I just bought myself a Golf GTI then added a spoiler and a bodykit, lowered the suspension and spray painted it black. Max power innit!

Some dodgy little gypsy kid (he looked about 3) just spent ages trying to get me to give him my phone by staring at me, pointing at it and speaking in Romanian. Not for a full jar of gypsy tears little gypsy kid, do one.

I’m on the bus now and am feeling most uncomfortable and a tad claustrophobic. There’s no luggage hold so my bag is between my legs in front of me which leaves little room for my legs. I think my right knee is going to be sore shortly. On the bright side it could be a lot longer trip than 3 hours so I’ll manage.

The driver charged me 22 lei, now the nice hostel girl had told me to hit him with an expletive if this be the case but without a bicycle in reserve, I didn’t think this to be a wise course of action. Grudgingly, I paid the man.

The journey went okay in the end, it only took about 2 and a half hours and half way through the guy next to me got off so I had plenty of room then. Jobs a good ‘n.

Brasov look an interesting place, I’ll be getting acquainted with it properly tomorrow.

The hostel seems good too. They give you a voucher for every night you’re there (in my case 3) to get a free beer. It’s local stuff called Ciucas (is that Toadfish from Neighbours on the left?). I don’t think I’m going to have any vouchers left in the morning.

I’ve not had many photo opportunites today so here is one of me gazing in the Transylvanian wilderness.

It’s back, and it’s the same size, same quality, and same level of badassery as before. It’s the weekly recap feature that some like to call ShoNTell.

PLAY
…

Eternal Sonata (360): A cutesy, fluffy Japanese role-playing game that’s bizarrely set in the mind of Chopin, and resorts to excessively simplistic brawler combat, unimaginative levelling-up and a whole host of tired J-RPG clichés, just shouldn’t be that good. And in this case it wasn’t. Eternal Sonata was very, very average, only saved by sparkling presentation, and by not suffering from the excessive padding that J-RPGs tend to. Sadly, that all went out the window with its ending, in which its characters bombarded me with deprecating comments about myself and humanity in general for half an hour. Hey, Eternal Sonata, if I was planning to do some soul-searching, I sure wouldn’t play a J-RPG. Also, if you’re going to be all preachy, maybe you should practise what you preach, you average game, you.

Need for Speed: Undercover (360): Yup, from one classic to another. There wasn’t anything drastically wrong about Need for Speed: Undercover, but there was almost nothing right about it either. Even the series’ typically entertaining B-movie cut scenes felt soulless. Why has this series felt such a burning need to reinvent itself over and over? Need for Speed: Undergound 2 remains one of the best, most enjoyable racers ever made, simply because it had no aspirations to be anything more than a simple, arcade-style racer with tons of things to do, and a genuinely impressive car customisation mode. Undercover suffered from trying to eat parts from lots of different racer pies, unable to decide whether it was Burnout Paradise or Gran Turismo 4 throughout its single-player campaign. This series needs to return to its Pimp My Ride roots before it loses all of its caché.

I got a need for speed, whoa-op!

Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3): I’ve already talked at length with Joe about this game on this week’s Big Red Potion, but one thing I do need to say, now that I’m free of the spoiler-free shackles – SPOILER – is that the Scarecrow scenes were awesome. OK, so like the rest of the game they were highly derivative, in this case of other mind-bending games like Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid 2, but they still provided a welcome break from the perfunctory hit-and-run gameplay. My only criticism with them is that I’d have liked to have seen more variety within the actual gameplay within them, but narrative-wise they were just top-notch. The initial one, which was set in Arkham Asylum’s morgue, was especially creepy. The cacophony of all those freezer doors banging, mixed in with the Scarecrow’s booming, persistent demands for me to leave, gave me a critical case of the heebie-jeebies.

AND…
—

8-bit Conviction: Eidos Community Manager Mike Oldman did some reimagining of some classic 8-bit games, based on the stylistic signposting that will be employed in Splinter Cell: Conviction. My favourite has to be Pac-Man: “EAT AND LEAVE” – my life motto, funnily enough. Art @ mycoldman on Flickr

8-bit Professor Layton: To continue the 8-bit reimagining theme, here’s a wonderful interpretation via Nonsak of what Professor Layton would look like on the NES. It’s splendid and all, but all it’s really made me do is start pining even more for Diabolical Box, which doesn’t come out until later this month, despite it already being out in the US. Post @ Tiny Cartridge

Need for Speed: Undercover. Ett bilspel. Seda

Need for Speed: Undercover.

There are some effects in video game that really annoy me. Don’t get me wrong, most of the graphics are useful or at least useless and awesome, but there are some that are useless, annoying and just bad.

Distance Fog

This one was used in the early days to hide the fact, that the content in the distance is not really there, because of the weak graphics hardware. But with current cards and LOD (Level Of Detail) this is no longer needed. When I wander around in some far of MMORPG, I want to see the next town I go to, not just a massive wall of fog and the gates popping up 5 yards before me. They could just show the skyline of the village or the walls or something.

This is even worth with mountains, mountains don’t just pop in. There are quite unmovable, they don’t jump at you from 30 yards away. It’s not that hard to render, about a hundred Polygons, maybe.

Real life rarely has distance fog. And it looks really stupid on a beautiful sunny day to be any kind of fog around. It’s not much that’s in the distance, some mountains, treetops and a church, if I could see that all is fine.

Pixel Shaders

Pixelshaders are the new thing in the industry and developers are going to town with it. But they should remember: Use only when needed. They are very useful for some things, like night vision or tv-effects. The grain-effect in Left 4 Dead is sublime, it is not over the top and only noticeable when you look for it, but it adds a lot of atmosphere. Or the TV-screen-effect of Battlefield 2142, when you enter a turret. It moves random lines around and makes it look like some video transportation errors are going on, very nice.

But, and I can’t stretch this enough, some of them are really really iritating. Most first person games are guilty of this, like Far-Cry, the newer Call of Duty or even Prototype. When your health gets low, your screen gets dirty or turns dark or red-ish. This is most annoying, because when your health gets low you need more and better overview over the situation and get cover or something.

The sound is affected to, it gets silent you hear your (characters) heartbeat slowing down. This is not what happens to hurt people. They get adrenaline and are on the height of their senses, at least for a short while. They don’t just fade away. Plus it’s an ass-move gameplaywise. At the moment where I need my senses the most, they get taken away from me. Please bring back the health meter and leave my screen alone.

Lens Flares

This is one where I can only grab my head and ask: Why? Although it is mostly older games like Serious Sam or my beloved Freelancer, why do there need to be lens flares in first person games? Does the character have cameras in my eyes or what? When I look at the sun, it goes brown and leaves after shadows.

I can get it a tiny bit for third person games, because they want to be like a movie or something, but camera operators usually try to combat lens flares, because it makes the movie look like, you know, a movie and not as if you are really there.

Lens flares of any kind in games or movies take away the immersion, it make the thing look less real, so why use resources to make it. You could just go back to Pong if you don’t want more realism.

Motion-Blur

This is my most hated effect of all, because it is overused, annoying, hurts the eyes and can’t be turned off sometimes.

Heaviest offender to my knowledge is Need for Speed: Undercover. Previous Need for Speed’s had it too, but this one takes the cake: It blurs the sky and distance objects. Have you ever driven so fast in any car that the sky was blurred? No, because you can’t, it is miles away and you would have to go mach 20 at least to see it blur on a very rainy day. Distance objects don’t blur, cause they move slower on your eye (or the projection created there).

The only thing blurry are the streets and maybe, maybe foiliage close to the road, but not the sky. What are they going to blur next? The sun?

Luckily in Need for Speed: Undercover you can turn it off by setting World Effects to off or minimum, which also removes the distracting glowing roads.

“Need for Speed undercover”
