Egypt’s Head of Antiquities, Dr Zahi Hawass, is a man on a mission: to try to persuade some of the world’s leading museums to repatriate several of the greatest treasures of ancient Egypt — starting with the bust of Nefertiti, from Berlin. A man who courts publicity by his style — he is not known as the Indiana Jones of Egyptology for nothing — he has ensured plentiful coverage for his quest during the past few days in London, as one of the artefacts he is after is the Rosetta Stone, the tablet seized by the Napoleonic French before being bagged by the British, and which provided the key to understanding hieroglyphics. The Stone is in the British Museum and that august institution has just as strong an intention of hanging on to it as it does to the Parthenon (‘Elgin’) Marbles. However, that has not dissuaded the tenacious Dr Hawass from running his campaign to get his six target objects back to Egypt in time for the opening of the Egyptian Grand Museum in about five years’ time.

This evening, Dr Hawass was the guest speaker at a sell-out dinner of the Political and Economic Circle of the National Liberal Club in London, where he also enlightened us with some of the fruits of his research over the past 18 months using DNA testing on mummies in the Valley of the Kings (quite a departure for someone whose earlier career was based almost entirely in and around the pyramids of Giza). Two separate laboratories in Cairo worked on the relevant material, some of it from the mummy of King Tutankhamun; Dr Hawass hopes that we may therefore not only learn who King Tut’s father was, but also solve the mystery of what the young monarch died from. An institute in the United States is currently doing extra research on the material, but Dr Hawass hopes to be in a position very shortly to announce the dramatic findings at a press conference in the Valley of the Kings. In the meantime, he is promoting a couple of new books, including a beautiful coffee table tome on some of the treasures of the current Egyptian Museum, with magnificent pictures by Sandro Vannini (Heritage World Press, £35).

We’re on a famous syllable now: nefer, the Egyptian word for beautiful or, as in this case, good. It has sounded down the ages in the names of some of Egypt’s most famous queens:

Nefertari, “the most beautiful of them all”.

So what symbol did the Egyptians choose to represent the sound of good and beautiful? Have a look and see if you can tell what it is:

Nope? Give up? OK, I’ll tell you. It’s the heart and windpipe, possibly of an ox. Aaaah, of course! You’re smacking yourself on the forehead now, aren’t you? What else would you use to convey the sound for good or beautiful? Well, I suppose these abstract concepts are hard to draw. You have to reach for the practical, and the practical can be pretty earthy. I suppose that, as writing was invented to keep inventories of valuable commodities, the butchered components of an expensive animal like an ox would be something you would want to itemise on a list. The sound is just a coincidence. When writing is developing beyond the practical to capture abstract qualities, if a symbol already exists for that sound, that’s what you use. So, they used the heart and windpipe for nefer, meaning good or beautiful.

Or rather, in this case:

The nefer hieroglyph is a triliteral, conveying in one symbol the sound of three consonants: n, f and r. The second and third of these letters are written out more fully in other examples:

However, in the case of our offering formula, like nebet in the previous post, the adjective is feminine, to agree with khet, “thing”. You could put a loaf of bread after it, to stand for the “t” if you wanted, but as it’s a formula and things tend ot get compressed in formulae, the scribe hasn’t bothered in this example. To draw the nefer sign, I usually start with the downward stroke, loop it around to make a squat little jar shape for it to stand on, cross the upright like a Roman t (I usually cross it twice, as the Egyptians often did, too) and then put in the details on the jar shape: a little crescent above, and a little loop below.

Here are a couple of examples of the real hieroglyph, one a sculpted relief, the other an inlay in semi-precious stone:

You can see the internal markings of the heart carved into the limestone, but not into the tiny bit of gemstone – too fiddly, perhaps, when you have a lot of them to do.

Again, I did consider putting a picture of a real, gory specimen on the blog – but if you really want to see one, you know where to look. I’m not squeamish, but I don’t want to put people off.

So, if you fancy one of your colleagues but don’t know how to tell them, you can write the hieroglyph for beautiful on their whiteboard, and take it from there. Or, if you really loathe them but are forced to write the offering formula on their birthday card because you’ve done it for yourself, you can console yourself that what you’re drawing for them is something really gory. Fill in those details with relish!

Ah, claro, a segunda pergunta: pra quê?

________________________________

In Berlin’s reconstructed Neues Museum, open for the first time in more than 70 years, the queen gets her own room. The exquisite 3,400-year-old bust of Nefertiti gazes alluringly from her perch under a coffered cupola, the star exhibit of what is the last of five museums to reopen its doors on Museum Island, just in time for the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

From the NYT today: When Ancient Artifacts Become Political Pawns

Zahi Hawass has been demanding the return of a lot of Egyptian artifacts lately, from Berlin, the Louvre, and the British Museum. Many critics have noted the nationalistic and political reasons for this behavior, linking it to a stagnant Egyptian government desperate to show the Egyptian people some kind of progress or victory. When an Egyptian was passed over or turned down for the position of head of UNESCO, it fell to Hawass to recover face for Mubarak’s government.

Getting back Nefertiti would help on that score. So might flexing some archaeological muscle, even with no realistic expectation the bust will be returned. Either way, art becomes a political football.

That’s what restitution often comes down to these days.

Nationalism by other means.

Politics by proxy.

Scrive Giuliana Altamura:

Home at last:
The Bust of Nefertiti in Berlin’s New Museum
(14th century BCE)

IT TOOK ONLY A few hours to obliterate Berlin’s New Museum, the brightest jewel in the capital’s proud crown of cultural heritage sites. British bombs blasted holes through its roof on the night of November 22/23, 1943 and then the flames took over the job. A further bombing in February, 1945 finished off the last undamaged wing. Pitched battles by SS and Red Army forces in the last days of the war destroyed what little had been preserved from the flames, leaving only blackened walls and shattered exhibition rooms behind.

The museum itself had already closed at the oubreak of war in 1939. This means that its more mobile treasures were hidden away in mine shafts and other protected sites, preserving most of them for later generations to view in a hodge-podge of museums scattered across Berlin. But these seventy years of improvisation are finally over, because on October 17, 2009 the New Museum finally reopened its doors, allowing visitors to admire some of the world’s greatest historical art collections at their original site.

Sleeping Beauty awakes

The New Museum was commissioned by Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1841…

Revamped Neues Museum Finally Opens in Berlin

For seven decades Berlin’s Neues Museum was a derelict, bomb-scarred shell — but finally it is back, boasting a star-studded cast including the 3,400-year-old bust of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti. German Chancellor Angela Merkel officially opens the restored museum on Friday.

It’s a day that took decades to arrive. One of the jewels of Berlin’s Museum Island complex will reopen its doors. The Neues Museum reopens on Friday, meaning that the entire ensemble of Berlin’s neoclassical galleries will be open for the first time since World War II.

Do follow the link to the full article, as there are some truly excellent photos there. Also, a hertening extra from the article:

The star of the show will be the limestone-and-stucco bust of Nefertiti, which has been in Germany since 1913. Reflecting her status in the world of art history, the beautiful object will reside alone in a dome-ceilinged room which overlooks the length of the museum.

It’s always make me smile to see Egyptian art get pride of place… biased a know, but in this case I think almost everyone would agree it’s a place rightfully occupied.

The restoration of the Neues is a major achievement, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s been executed, as much of the original structure has been preserved, complete with it’s battle scars.

Ancient Egyptian art is five thousand years old. We are all familiar with its distinctive representation and style, and of course, with the historical figures which made its art and culture famous the world over: Ramesses the Great, Nefertiti (below right), Akhenaten, and of course, King Tut-Ankh-Amun. Expressed in painting, sculpture and architecture, the art forms of the Ancient Egyptians are symbolic and fascinating, and of course intended to keep history alive.

In a narrow sense, Ancient Egyptian art refers to the canonical 2D and 3D art developed in Egypt circa 3000 BC and used until approximately the 3rd century. The majority of elements in Egyptian art remained remarkably stable during that time period without incorporating any outside influences. The same basic conventions and quality of observation started at a high level and remained near that level over that entire time period.

So what, you ask, are the most important influences that dominated the character and style of Ancient Egyptian art? Regularity of features, keen observation, and exact representation of 3D forms are all definite factors. Although we are still stunned today by the sheer beauty of tomb art in particular, “prettiness” was not as important to the Egyptians as completeness and exactness of representation.

Symbolism also played an important role in establishing a sense of order. Symbolism, ranging from the Pharaoh’s regalia (which symbolized his power to maintain order) to the individual symbols of Egyptian gods and goddesses, was omnipresent in Egyptian art. Animals were also considered symbolic figures. The most prevelant of these would be the cat, an animal strongly revered in those days, and representative of the cat goddess, Bastet. (below ).

Colors were also symbolic; blue and green represented the Nile and life, yellow stood for the sun god, and red represented power and vitality. As stilted as some of the human figures appear to us now in this day and age, the artists in Ancient Egypt show a sophisticated knowledge of anatomy and a close attention to detail, especially in their rendtions of animals.

Tomb art in particular had another important function, one that we find odd today. The painted figures, as well as ceramic figures, were intended to accompany the deceased upon his/her journey into the afterlife, either to keep him company or as slaves to serve his needs. Artists endeavoured to preserve everything of the present time as clearly and permanently as possible.

Basically, we could say that Egyptian art in all of its forms obeyed one law, and one law only: the mode of representing man, nature and the environment ramained almost identical for thousands of years, and the most admired artists were those who replicated the most admired styles of the past.

Next time we will take a look at other forms of Ancient Egyptian art and how they related to everyday life, as well as how gender roles were portrayed. Stay tuned.
