<p>La introducción del procesador Core i7 de Intel en los iMac de gama alta no habrían podido ser mejores. Según las últimas pruebas de rendimiento realizadas por Macworld, <strong>el rendimiento del iMac con Core i7 supera incluso al del Mac Pro con el procesador Intel Xeon </strong>de 8 núcleos.</p>
<p>Así, <strong>el iMac se convierte en una opción más asequible que el Mac Pro para conseguir un ordenador potente</strong>, ya que las aplicaciones del iMac “tan sólo” cuestan unos <strong>500 dólares</strong> aproximadamente, mientras que el coste de las ampliaciones del Mac Pro equivalente se van a los 2600 dólares.</p>
<p>Eso sin contar la pantalla LED de 27 pulgadas que viene incluída con el iMac, cosa que no pasa con el Mac Pro. <strong>Quizás haya llegado la hora de actualizar la gama de los LED Cinema Display junto con los procesadores del Mac Pro</strong> para que este vuelva a ser, realmente, el ordenador más potente y grande que Apple nos ofrezca.</p>

Queste CPU tutte quad core sfruttano la nuova architettura denominata Nehalem e piano piano andranno a sostituire gli Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad e Core 2 Extreme.</p>
<p>La serie <a href="http://www.intel.com/products/processor/corei7EE/index.htm">Core i7 Extreme Edition</a> raggiunge i 3,33 GHr ed è la più adatta alle operazioni di overclocking.</p>
<p>Le principali novità sono:</p>
<ul>
<li>nuovo socket (LGA 1366 ed LGA 1156),</li>
<li>nuovo bus seriale,</li>
<li>controller della RAM integrata (eliminato quindi il northbridge),</li>
<li>i quad core sono nativi ovvero non sono 2 dual core uniti,</li>
<li>nuova gerarchia della cache (ora a 3 livelli).</li>

<p>Nehalem is essentially a completely new family of Intel processors which have brought back Hyper Threading, feature an integrated memory controller (yes, AMD did that first) supporting DDR3 RAM, and have done away with the Front Side Bus (FSB) through Quick Path architecture (in an implementation not too different from AMD&#8217;s Hyper Transport) which allows for 25.6 GB/sec link: double the bandwidth as the X48 chipset&#8217;s 1.6 GHz FSB. Nehalem also can dynamically manage darn near everything: power, threads, cache, cores and bus.</p>

<p>They plan to launch these four 32nm dual-core Arrandale CPUs (Calpella platform):</p>

<li>Core i5-430M</li>
<li>Core i3-350M</li>
<li>Core i3-330M</li>
</ul>
<p>The Arrandale CPU is based on the Nehalem architecture that was first introduced into Macs earlier this year. These processors are rumored to be available in mainstream as well as low-voltage variants which can be used in the MacBook Air. They are expected to provide significant performance boosts.</p>

Тази нова платформа съдържа Intel Core i7 &#8220;Clarksfield&#8221; мобилен процесор и новият Intel PM55 Express чипсет. Полученият резултат поставя мобилните компютри с още една позиция по-нагоре спрямо настолните.<br />

<p>Базирани на актуалната 45нм Nehalem микро-архитектура, продуктова линия процесори Intel Core i7 се състои от три модела:Core i7-920XM Extreme Edition, Core i7-820QM и Core i7-720QM. С контролер на паметта вече на самия процесор и IO контролиран от чипсета, производителността на тези процесори е по-конкурентна отвсякога спрямо настолните варианти.</p>

<p>920XM и 820QM притежават 8MB кеш L3, докато 720QM &#8211; 6MB L3. Говорейки за производителност, тук е момента да се спомене, че Core i7 920Xm Extreme Edition подлежи на овърклок, докато останалите два модела,  могат да бъдат контролирани единствено от Intel Turbo Boost технологията.</p>

The 10C531 build was seeded to developers a few days ago, and seems include references to MacBook Pro 6.1 and MacBook Pro 6.2 models which have yet to be released.</p>
<p>This immediately raised attention considering the latest MacBoopk Pros are designated a 5.x model number. Previous reports had made note that the Nehalem (Core i7) processors would be suitable for MacBook Pros by late 2009/early 2010.</p>

I&#8217;d have used the village idiot quip but I got beat to it by the guys at <a href="http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2009/10/23/theres-a-village-somewhere-missing-an-idiot/">Data Center Knowledge</a>.</p>
<p>In an overly simplistic analysis (and probably a reading of goat entrails), Cramer has concluded that since servers based on Intel&#8217;s Nehalem CPU can replace 8 older servers, data centers everywhere are going to end up with tons of empty space and the whole industry will collapse. I can only conclude he has a secret deal to shill for Intel.</p>
<p>First of all, the 8 older servers replaced sounds like something read off a marketing brochure, sort of like 4 out of 5 dentists recommend. I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;d try replacing 8 of my servers with one Nehalem based server. Of course, it probably sounds good to people who don&#8217;t know anything about tech.</p>
<p>Of course, this also that every bump in server technology has only increased the demand for more servers and hence, more data center space. Recent reports are that data center demand is growing 3x the rate of supply. The only data centers I&#8217;m aware of anywhere with tons of empty floor space to burn are the older facilities that just ran out of power capacity, leaving them with floor space and no more power.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure all the big boys that have been building data center space in leaps and bounds are going to be so disappointed that Intel&#8217;s wonder chip is going to make these huge facilities all obsolete overnight. </p>
<p>Jim, in recognition of this award, we are pleased to present you with a multi-colored wig and a squeaky red nose. Wear them with pride!</p>

<p>Arrivano anche in primi processori quad core per portatili basati su architettura Nehalem. La presentazione dei chip è avvenuta oggi, all&#8217;Intel Developer forum dove le componenti sono state al centro di uno dei keynote organizzati dalla società di Santa Clara. Si tratta dei Core i7 e dei Core i7 Extreme Edition, Noti in precedenza con il nome in codice &#8220;Clarksfield&#8221;.</p>
<p><!--more-->Tra le tecnologie che caratterizzano i Core i7 c&#8217;è Turbo Boost, che è in grado di accelerare la velocità di clock del processore fino al 75% in base al carico di lavoro, Hyper-Threading, supporto di 2 canali di memoria DDR3 a 1.333 MHz e grafica completa PCI Express 2.0 1 x16 o 2 x8. I notebook dotati di processore Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition per PC portatili supportano Intel XMP (Intel Extreme Memory Profiles) e Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, la una evoluta utility di regolazione che rende possibile l&#8217;overclock. Inoltre, il chipset Intel® PM55 Express consente a workstation di fascia alta e a notebook per videogame di supportare funzionalità come la tecnologia di storage Intel Matrix, Intel High Definition Audio e un numero maggiore di interfacce I/O.</p>
<p>La velocità dei processori vanno da 1,6 GHz a 3,2 GHz a seconda dei modelli e dell&#8217;attivazione della modalità Turbo Boost su 8MB di cache di secondo livello.</p>
<p>Asus, Dell, HP e Toshiba, hanno iniziato a fornire oggi notebook basati sui processori Intel Core i7 per PC portatili, con sistemi aggiuntivi prodotti dagli OEM disponibili nei prossimi mesi.</p>
<p>La possibilità che tra i clienti di Intel ci sia anche Apple è legato ad alcune scelte strategiche di Cupertino. Clarksfield ha consumi da 45 a 55W, decisamente superiori a quelli che caratterizzano gli attuali Nehalem (35W) ma i nuovi chip non hanno necessità del Northbridge (CPU, Ram e PCI Express comunicano direttamente con il processore) e questo comporta una sensibile riduzione dell&#8217;assorbimento di energia che potrebbe, a quel punto, essere simile a quella dei Nehalem usati oggi dai MacBook Pro. Resta da vedere se Apple vuole puntare (per il marketing) a dare evidenza ai quad core o restare ancorata al trend degli ultimi mesi, puntando ad un ulteriore incremento dell&#8217;autonomia.</p>
<p>Nel caso imboccasse la seconda strada, Cupertino potrebbe essere costretta ad attendere i processori &#8220;Arrandale&#8221;, che portano al prossimo livello la microarchitettura Nehalem. Si tratta di chip che integreranno il dual-core e la componente grafica nel package e abbineranno il processo di produzione a 32 nm a transistor con gate metallici ad alta costante k (high k) di seconda generazione. L&#8217;obbiettivo sono prestazioni ed efficienza energetica nei PC portatili mainstream che arriveranno a superare i 3 GHz (fino a 3.33 GHz per la precisione) grazie a Turbo Boost. Il lancio del chip, di cui è stata data qualche anticipazione da David Perlmutter, Executive Vice President e General Manager dell&#8217;Intel Architecture Group, non è molto distante; Intel potrebbe fornirli in quantità sufficiente alla produzione in serie entro la fine dell&#8217;anno.</p>
<p>Alla luce di quanto scritto se Arrandale appare il chip ideale per i MacBook Pro, Clarksfield sembra essere un prodotto già pronto per la revisione degli iMac. La combinazione del fatto che per i desktop non esiste un problema di consumo di batteria e il fatto che grazie ai progressi tecnologici la dispersione di calore non sarebbe molto superiore a quello dei Nehalem, potrebbe spingere Apple a puntare su di essi.</p>
<p>Per capire se Clarksfield avrà l&#8217;incarico di far girare Mac Os Leopard non dovremo attendere molto; il rinnovo degli iMac è ormai all&#8217;orizzonte.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>&#8220;Not many people have debated that Intel&#8217;s Nehalem architecture is the fastest available for consumer desktop computers since it was released last year, but quite a few have complained about the cost of the platform.</p>
<p>Intel just released new Lynnfield-based processors under both the Core i7 and Core i5 names and tests are showing the new CPUs beating Nehalem in both performance-per-watt and performance-per-dollar tests to a startling degree.</p>
<p>And while raw performance probably still goes to the Nehalem-based Core i7 CPUs, the lower prices of motherboards and memory for Lynnfield processors will likely more than make up for it.&#8221;</p>
