Although it is supposed to rain tomorrow, the cleanup will still take place. Personally, if it is pouring out, I won’t actually do any cleaning on Saturday but will pick up supplies and go out on my own on Sunday or another day in the week. The Sentinel did post an article about the clean up as well.

Put on your walking shoes, grab a hat and prepare to make your community a prettier place.

On Saturday, the Downtown Neighborhood Connection will be hosting the third annual Carlisle clean-up day. Volunteers will meet at First Presbyterian Church on The Square just before 10 a.m. and work until noon.

“It’s a community clean-up with the neighborhood groups coming out,” event organizer Laura Beaver said.

After the groups assemble at the church, they will be given maps showing different areas and they will be assigned to different sections.

“There are designated places on east and west sides of Carlisle to deposit trash,” Beaver said.

PennDOT has provided vests and gloves for the volunteers to wear, so they will be highly visible. The DNC will provide old borough bags for trash to be collected in, and there will be a pick-up truck available to haul large items to the drop-off sites. The borough will collect the trash from the deposit sites later.

“This is just to get everybody out in the community to clean up a little bit of their neighborhoods,” Beaver said. Generally, the turnout has been about 20 people from the east side, 16 on the west side and 12 to 15 from the south side of the borough.

“We’re meeting at The Square, so downtown businesses would see us leaving and going, give us more visibility as a group,” Beaver added. “It’s a good way to meet some of your neighbors. People come out and they’re usually paired up with buddies. It’s a great way to walk around Carlisle to see what’s going on.”

The DNC tries to do a borough clean-up twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

“This is a rain-or-shine event,” Beaver cautioned. Because of events scheduled for Easter weekend, the group wants the clean-up done in advance.

On Saturday, April 23, the East Side Neighbors are hosting an Easter egg hunt for the community beginning at 2 p.m. at Biddle Mission Park, 311 E. North St. The event is open to children ages 1 to 12 who will need to bring their own baskets. Prior to the egg hunt, there will be craft time.

For more information, or to volunteer for the clean-up, contact Beaver at lebocean@embarqmail.com or at 240-0709. Preregistration for the clean-up is not required; volunteers can show up the day of the event as well.

Spring is in the air! And it’s time to do a little cleaning on our streets. We all see the trash in the streets, maybe occasionally we pick some up, but it can be a bit overwhelming at times. So, we are getting together as a neighborhood, with some outside help, to clean our streets! This cleanup will cover the southside of Adair Park from Lexington Ave to Elbert St. The next one will cover the northside. We will meet in Adair Park I under the pavilion by 9am to get into groups and have a little breakfast. We will split up into teams, each one taking a street, and head out. This should wrap up by at least noon, where we will come back, turn in tools (provided by Atlanta ToolBank) and head home. This is such a great time to meet neighbors and hang out with those you know. Sure, picking up trash isn’t the most glamorous job and is hard work at times, but the joy in seeing clean streets plus the people you meet make it so worthwhile. Check out pictures from previous cleanups and park renovations here.

Please RSVP by emailing communications@adairpark.com or calling Chenee Joseph at 678-463-6315. We need to get a headcount. All you need to bring is gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. We will provide breakfast, trash bags, tools and water.

Not to mention, since we cannot do a cleanup without a party, we are having a meet-n-greet from 2pm-5pm that same day! This gives everyone time to head home, grab a bite to eat, shower and come back. This will take place at 830 Brookline Street. Light refreshments will be provided. Even if you can’t make the cleanup, come visit with some neighbors at the meet-n-greet!

For some strange reason, people must feel compelled — compelled, I say, to roll down their window(s) and throw out their trash when they stop on Acorn Oak to turn onto South Millbend. I walk Fred that way pretty often, and the trash really piles up right there. Usually I have a plastic bag with me, and if it isn’t full of the unmentionable substance, I’ll stoop down and pick up some of the big pieces before Fred insists that we move along. Fred isn’t big on waiting around. He’s got places to go!

Someone else is picking up trash along Acorn Oak. A neighbor mentioned a name to me, and now I can’t recall it. Whoever you are, thank you. You’re helping to keep the neighborhood up, and I, for one, appreciate your efforts! I’m sure others do too. Every little bit of effort helps.

The county sent a street-sweeper around not long ago, and it sure was good to see it at that corner especially, but now, of course, the litter has reappeared. It blows into the trees, or out into the street, gets run over and smashed by cars. Ugly. Unnecessary. I wish there was something we could do about it, but I guess we’ll just have to be litter-getters for now. Try taking a little plastic bag with you on your next walk. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can fill it up. It’s good exercise too. Walk, stoop, bend. Walk, stoop, bend. Burn some calories! And it makes you feel good too.

OAKLAND (CBS/KCBS) — One of Oakland’s toughest neighborhoods received several high-profile visitors on Saturday in an effort to improve the region one resident at a time.

98th Avenue and D Street was the scene of a violent homicide a little more than a week ago and it’s also where upwards of 1,500 arrests have been made within the past five years.

A spot that newly elected Mayor Jean Quan chose to be the first of the city’s crime beats for a walk and knock.

[worldnow id=5452485 width=480 height=360 type=video]

Quan says it’s her belief that organizing the community and getting everyone on the same page, is a recipe for turning troubled neighborhoods around.

“We’re going to tell people about the re-organization of their neighborhood crime council,” said Quan.

In addition, Quan handed out pamphlets and phone numbers that would connect residents to vital, free city services.

Assistant Police Chief Howard Jordan commended Quan on staying true to her commitment.

“We intend to support her residents here in any way we can,” he said.

Most of the residents applauded the idea of their mayor doing some grass roots organizing.

“Maybe they’ll help get the city back in good condition,” said one hopeful resident.

Quan said the idea is for residents to be energized and to really take back their streets, but she’ll be back for as long as it takes to make a difference.

“We’re going to have to work. Change is not easy, but I think if you don’t try, you don’t get change either,” concluded the new mayor.

This past Saturday Carlisle held it’s borough wide fall clean up campaign. The West Side Neig

This past Saturday Carlisle held it’s borough wide fall clean up campaign. The West Side Neighbors teamed up with the other neighborhood organizations in the area to clean up the streets. We will having another one in the Spring around Earth day in case you missed this one. The Sentinel wrote up a nice piece about the clean up.

Carlisle neighbors team up against trash

Shari Minnich quickly pushed her loaded grocery cart through the crosswalk at the intersection of Bedford and North Streets. Minnich was not finishing up a shopping trip, but instead transporting overflowing garbage bags back to Carlisle Alliance Church as part of the Fall Cleanup Day sponsored by the five neighborhood associations in Carlisle.

Minnich said she found the shopping cart in an alley within the first 10 seconds of the two-hour cleanup and said it helped a lot to transport the heavy garbage bags back to the church.

The shopping cart was not the only unique find Minnich picked up with her cleaning partner, Downtown Neighborhood Connection president Laura Beaver.

“We also found some weights,” Beaver said. “We were going to work out as we walked.”

Both women belong to the East Side Neighbors Association, which has been holding cleanup events like the one Saturday for the past three years now.

“We just felt it was the responsible thing to do,” Association President Curtis Hetrick said.

Working together

This year was the first time the five neighborhood associations collaborated and held their cleanup events on the same day.

Members of the ABC Northwest Crimewatch, the East Side Neighbors Association, the Pitt Street Pride Neighborhood Association, the South of South Neighborhood Association and the West Side Neighbors all teamed up to glean the streets and alleys of the borough for litter.

In addition, Elm Street Program Manager Deb Fulham-Winston said 12 Girl Scouts and seven students from Dickinson College, members of both The Keystones, a male student group interested in community service, and the Tree House Sorority, joined the cleanup efforts.

Curtis Hetrick said the East Side Neighbors Association is hoping to continue that partnership with the other associations in the future and further coordinate their cleanup events. Fulham-Winston said they hold two such cleanup days every year – in the fall and in the spring, near Earth Day.

Low turnout

However, while every volunteer helped, Beaver said she was disappointed in the turnout.

“We didn’t get a bunch of volunteers, not as many as we had hoped,” Beaver said.

Danelle Bowermaster, another member of the East Side Neighbors Association, said the number of residents from previous years was down. She said the group changed the cleanup from a morning event to an afternoon event, hoping more people would get involved, but that the time change did not make a difference.

Bowermaster, who was teamed up with Curtis Hetrick’s wife, Betsy, said the women had a great time picking up trash and meeting people in the neighborhood.

While they didn’t find anything like a shopping cart or weights, Betsy Hetrick said they picked up plenty of Halloween candy and wrappers.

“It was nice to do this after the Halloween parade,” she said of the extra trash from Monday’s event.

>I am hoping for some responses for things that others do to stay motivated in being a part of trying to improve their neighborhoods. I have been organizing a monthly cleanup in Edgewood for almost two years now, started the Friends of Edgewood Recreation Center, started a community garden for Edgewood at the rec center, trying to get us an outdoor movie night at the rec, and numerous other projects including the Tuesday walk/run/bike group for Edgewood and this blog.

Maybe I’m burned out or just fustrated by the things that still go on in this neighborhood that I see everyday as I walk my dogs. Trash is still thrown everywhere, kids throw rocks at each other/other people/houses/cars, anything new is not appreciated/destroyed – I could go on and on. I guess my big question to myself lately is why should I keep picking up the trash – I don’t litter. Why should I spend so much time trying to get Edgewood new projects and services if I will have to maintain them as well – why can’t I just wait for someone else to do the work? I have many great neighbors who do just that wait for things to get better instead of help them along. Am I really making any difference? Are there any others in the community that feel the same way?

I was on holiday for almost three weeks and since then have been catching up with work, community and social obligations. I am back now and promise to keep up with the blog better!!

This past Saturday was the Edgewood Monthly Neighborhood Cleanup and it was expanded to plant flowers and a community garden at the Edgewood Rec Center. There were many volunteers, young and old, throughout the course of the day and I had a great time working with everyone! The above picture is just some of the group that was there.

Also on Saturday was the Meet the Met celebration for the Metropolitan Branch trail and while I was only there early in the morning I was very impressed. There were booths from many of the community organizations and corporate sponsors, they planted a community garden along the trail, there were bikes to rent and prizes being given away, music, and a community arts and crafts sale that I believe will be going on every Saturday in June!

First of all, a Happy belated Earth Day to all! We hope that you spent your Earth Day in an environmentally-sound fashion – biking to work, taking a shorter shower, turning down your heat or A/C, etc.

Secondly, you may have noticed that we have a new look! We have finally implemented the new Ecossentials logo, created by Typework Studio, right here in Buffalo, NY! Our main website is coming along as well, and we hope to have something to show you on that front very soon – thank you for your patience!

Ecossentials will be celebrating Earth Day by visiting the Green Living Show in Toronto, where we hope to find some new products and projects to bring back stateside for you!

Have a great weekend all. Make it a great opportunity to get outside, get some exercise and perhaps participate in a neighborhood clean-up!

Here are some great neighborhood clean-up opportunities going on in your area this weekend:

The group meets in front of the Edgewood Rec Center at the corner of 3rd and Evarts NE at 10:30 a.m.

The cleanup is sponsored by the Friends of Edgewood Recreation Center and occurs the first Saturday of every month same time and location. The group picks up trash around the neighborhood including the rec center. If you cannot attend maybe try to help out by cleaning in front of your house or block.

The Friends of Edgewood Recreation Center is also starting a fundraiser for projects at the center and they are selling oval Edgewood bumper stickers (see above picture). They are five dollars each and 100% of the proceeds go to projects at the center. You can get one at the cleanup or by contacting the group.

Women act more ecologically, but climate change is taking a harsher toll them than on men, according to a new UN report.

Public transportation usage is growing in unexpected places. While Boston, New York City, the District and other East Coast cities already have high ridership numbers, more people are climbing aboard trains and buses in Detroit, San Antonio, Phoenix, Charlotte, N.C. and other unexpected spots around the country. Officials speculate that gas prices and economic uncertainty is getting more people aboard. Read the whole story.

Barry Farm (Re)mixed is getting lots of support for a neighborhood cleanup this weekend. But I think they are still in need of someone with a lawnmower. If you have one, consider joining the crew.

Park View has a photo essay questioning whether those neighborhood welcome to … signs add or detract from the loveliness of historic districts.

Go read DC Mud today on how the expansion of the Panama Canal may mean Capitol Hill is “about to get its own Big Dig - a $174 million capital improvement project that will unearth the long-buried tunnel south of the Capitol Building to widen and deepen the antiquated freight line.

Ahead of next month’s Copenhagen climate summit, countries are unveiling plans and pledges to cut emission. One notable exception to the trend – the United States.

We had a very successful neighborhood ‘Pay it Forward’ cleanup event this past Saturday.

We had a very successful neighborhood ‘Pay it Forward’ cleanup event this past Saturday. We had over 25 participants and we cleaned up over 15 homes. This is an event that we definitely need to do again in the future. For those of you that missed it, here is the gist of the Pay it Forward event:

1) Volunteer for the neighborhood cleanup

2) T.R.E. and the Greater Towers Community Association (“GTCA”) members will help clean up your yard, driveway, walkway and any trash or debris.

3) You ’Pay it Forward’ by helping us clean your neighbors yard

Therefore, you win (free yard cleaning), your neighbor wins (free yard cleaning), the community wins (neighborhood connections and clean homes). We want to thank all of the participants for their efforts in making this a success! Great Work!

Graffiti is a growing problem in our neighborhoods. I have seen it popping up alot more often. The worst seems to be the North side exit doors of the old movie theater on 200 North and 200 West. Provo City has been great about removing it within 24 hours from the time that it was reported. Here is where the city needs our help. If you see ANY graffiti anywhere in the neighborhood please follow this link to report it anonymously:
