Over Dec 11-13 I competed with my masters swim club, Minuteman, at the New England Short Course (Meters) Championships. Like last year, the meet was a ton of fun. Minuteman does such a fantastic job of bringing together beginner swimmers, people just looking to stay in shape, former collegiate athletes, and elite triathletes and providing a solid framework from which to improve. Unfortunately, we took 2^nd to Cambridge Masters this year (We won last year). I also fell just short of defending my High Point award and took 2^nd place in the high point standings. I swam surprisingly well given the fact that I had the flu earlier in the week.

All systems Go for Tucson

It’s official. I’ll be spending the first two months of 2010 in sunny, warm, not-snowy Tucson, AZ. The past two years, I’ve spent Jan & Feb at home before going out to Chula Vista, but I can’t say I’m too sad about altering that plan this year. Going to Chula Vista last month was a nice sneak preview of how pleasant base training is when you don’t have to sit on a trainer or run on a treadmill. So the condo we’re renting looks pretty sweet. The couple who owns the condo had to choose between renting it to me and Doug, (the triathletes), or a stripper from Reno. We think they made the right choice, although I’m not sure if they know that at times a triathlete’s outfit is pretty similar to a stripper’s (well, the speedo part at least…). Anyway, I leave on Monday and will spread the driving out over the following 5 days and arrive in Tucson on Jan 2^nd. This will be by far the longest road trip I’ve ever taken. In college I used to drive from Ann Arbor to Boston, but that doesn’t compare this cross-country trek…

If there was a single trading event for investors, traders, and speculators from early October to early December, it was not stocks and was not bonds.  It was not even the bet against the US Dollar.   It was the bright shiny yellow stuff… Gold.  Gold rose by over 20% in dollar-terms.  The DJIA is up close to 10% since then and the S&P is up almost 8% in the same period.  Longer-dated Treasury notes and bonds have not made any real money in that time.  Yet gold has pulled back now that the US Dollar has gotten off its back, and the pullback from the highs is now at about 10% in price.  We took a look at many issues to see if a top has been put in or if this pullback is a significant buying opportunity.

On top of tracking the key ETF, the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD).  We also wanted to take a look at the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX) and its three key components of Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE: ABX), Goldcorp Inc. (NYSE: GG), and Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM).  Even the Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDXJ) is worth noting here.

The first issue is the chart and what the technical patterns are saying.  Adam Hewison, a well-known technician and an affiliate of ours at INO, has provided a quick audio-video chart analysis.  His take is that gold has entered the silly season now that we are outside of the bands and on the backside of December 15.

We wanted to take our own look at this on the charts, and it seems very much a similar case.  After looking at the charts going back a year, gold could go back down to $1,050.00 or even closer to $1,000.00 per ounce before any long-term uptrend on the chart is violated.  Near-term is entirely different.  The bullish pattern has definitely been violated, and frankly this is what we’d refer to as a technical No Man’s Land.

Then there is the fundamental issue about gold and the ties to the Dollar and to interest rates.  It is true that the United States has been an outright violator of trust with our new deficit path and violations of the old debt ceiling.  We have billions, if not trillions, of dollars that may come into the money supply over the coming years.  The Chinese and the Middle East obviously want a hedge on protecting themselves from a weakening dollar.  The saving grace for the US greenback is Europe and the E.U. via the Euro.  Greece is in trouble with the ratings agencies.  Ireland, Spain, Austria, and other locales in Eastern Europe are potentially on the ropes.  The Brits are not a part of the Euro, but the Pound Sterling is at risk if it can’t quell the recent fears brought in by the ratings agencies.  Not everyone can hide in commodities, so any further developments in the E.U. would effectively take away the risk that the U.S. Dollar would further lose its position as the world’s reserve currency.

Then there is the notion of what will happen to US interest rates.  As of yesterday, the belief is that a Fed Funds hike will come in the summer of 2010.  That is too late if you take a snapshot today, but it is still now more likely.  A personal take is that this generally ramps faster and faster if strength or less weakness can remain.  The US Dollar Index may not be out of trouble entirely, but any rise in rates in the U.S. should offer at least a temporary floor to the US Dollar.  When was the last time you saw an interest rate cycle change and end on a “one and done” move by central banks?  If the US Dollar strengthens after a multi-year slide south, that will take away one of the major catalysts for gold bulls.

The recent pullback in gold has been seen in the gold miners and producers.  We usually take a look at the components inside the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX) to get a feel for the move between spot gold prices and the producers of gold.  That ETF is now down 18% from recent highs if you count the 5% slide today.  Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE: ABX) is the largest component, Goldcorp Inc. (NYSE: GG) is the second largest component, and Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) is the third largest component.  The total ETF weighting for those three alone is almost 34%.  Here is the percentage price drop seen in each from recent highs: Barrick down almost 20%, Goldcorp down 18%, and Newmont down almost 16%.  Keep in mind that this is after large losses today.

Then came the launch of the Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDXJ) in November.  This has been actively traded as traders look for leveraged bets on gold, and surprisingly it is only down about 16% from its post-launch highs.  ETFs of this cult caliber would be like having the second or third solar ETF or alternative energy ETF.  They may not mark a top, but they rarely come at any market or sector bottom.

There is a huge wild card for the gold sector which has yet to gather any steam.  Whether you like the CFTC or the administration of today, the reality is that its new directive is likely to be in force until the end of 2012 and it will not be even up for debate as to whether any real regime change in the U.S. is possible until after Congress’ mid-term elections.  That being said, imagine if the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) is deemed too large by regulators similar to what we have seen in energy ETF products, or even worse that it is an outright direct influence on the price of gold…. and therefor a direct cause of inflation.  Suddenly, there could be billions and billions worth of dollars in gold bullion hitting the market as the GLD is one of the top holders of gold in the world.  For the gold bulls, the good news is that this is not an alarm being sounded elsewhere by other market observers and it may never even come up as an issue.

Unfortunately this still leaves a question mark for beyond what is just the rest of 2009.  If you rate what economists, traders, and analysts all say on interviews and television report now compared to a month ago, that field is now looking just as split.  Dennis Gartman even sounded mixed in his latest call.  A final bit of insight here is that when these choppy patterns go into the technical no man’s land, it requires being right every day to be profitable.  What seems obvious now is that the straight line to $1,300.00 or $1,400.00 in gold is no longer one that is put in as a “definitely until told otherwise” status.

Thật ra cũng chẳng biết mô tả cảm giác thế nào, có cái gì đó vừa háo hức, vừa bỡ ngỡ, vừa vui sướng, vừa sợ (may mà chưa vừa mệt mỏi và vừa chán ) Đúng là đọc sách vở nhiều, mình cứ hình dung ra lúc đẻ xong là có cái gì đó vỡ òa ra, là của mình, rồi hạnh phúc làm mẹ dâng lên tột đỉnh, đúng là con mình rồi abc.. Thực ra ko phải vậy.

Trước đấy thì đau khiếp lên được (chưa đến nỗi đau muốn chết) nhưng muốn Nem ra thật nhanh nhanh cho xong chuyện đi. Chuyện đau đẻ cũng buồn cười, khi chưa đau thì mong ngóng từng ngày. Đêm hôm 18, sáng 19 khi có những cơn co đầu tiên, hai vợ chồng ôm nhau thật … hạnh phúc (ặc ặc) cho đến sáng thì chả thấy niềm vui đâu cả. Cả đêm đấy mình cứ lục tục, vừa gãi ngữa, vừa đau. Cũng buồn cười, mong những cơn co đến thật nhanh, thật mạnh, thật dồn dập (vì như thế là sắp đẻ) lại vừa sợ nó đến. Mẹ chồng sáng nghe tin lục tục chạy vào hỏi đau lắm hả con, mình nhăn nhó chưa kịp nói gì thì bà đã tốt quá, tốt rồi hic hic.

Nem tự cầm bình ty

Vì đầu Nem không lọt, tư thế nằm chéo (thảo nào bụng mẹ cứ nhọn hoắt) nên mình phải mổ. Lúc đấy mình nhớ đến Minh Toe, tình cảnh giống nhau. Mình ban đầu tưởng can đảm lắm, đẻ thường cho nó mấu, nhưng lúc đau quá rồi thì chỉ mong họ mổ nhanh nhanh để hết đau. Vì mổ nên chả có cảm giác gì cả, nhoằng cái thấy cái bụng rung rung, rồi có tiếng oe oe, rồi họ dí một cái đầu đen xì, một cặp mắt đen thao láo vào cho mình xem chưa đc 3 giây, bảo con chị đây. Mình chỉ kịp ôi ôi 2 tiếng, đang chuẩn bị khóc vì xúc động thì họ đã tha đi mất rồi. Thế là xong, việc còn lại là vá víu gì đấy (ngồi nghe mấy ông bà bác sĩ bình luận cái bụng xấu của mình, trước đó ở phòng đẻ đã chê chán rồi), rồi đẩy mình vào hậu phẫu nằm. Chẳng biết mình ở hậu phẫu bao nhiêu lâu (bị lấy mất kính nên ko nhìn đc đồng hồ), hình như cũng có hai tiếng thôi nhưng mình cảm tưởng như là cả đêm. Bà con xung quanh hình như ngủ la liệt, mình thì cứ thao láo chả ngủ nghê đc gì, chỉ ngóng sau cho mau mau đc rời khỏi cái phòng này (thế mà ối người muốn ở lại còn ko đc, mẹ mình cũng suýt cho mình ở đấy cả đêm luôn), hình dung ra cái giây phút đc thực sự ôm Nem vào lòng, rồi lo ko biết giờ nó ra sao, lại còn ghen với mọi người ở ngoài chắc giờ này đc bế nó chán rồi, trong khi mình còn nằm chết dí ở đây. Thế nên mình nằm ở hậu phậu rất ngoan, ko đòi hỏi kêu ca gì, mấy chị hộ lý bảo làm gì mình cũng làm ngay tắp lự (kiểu nghiêng người, lắc chân cho khỏi tê abc) để mong đạt tiêu chuẩn ra khỏi hậu phẫu. Nằm trong đấy còn nghe cả tiếng mẹ hỏi thăm bên ngoài mà ko trả lời đc, di động họ cũng ko cho gửi vào.

Thế mà lúc ra ngoài thì vẫn chẳng thấy Nem đâu, vì bà ngoại thấy phòng phụ sản kinh quá (1 phòng đến chục cái giường, mỗi cái giường bé tý mà 2 mẹ 2 con nằm chung, dưới đất là la liệt người nhà bệnh nhân nằm, ngốt đến phát sợ) nên gửi Nem ở lại cả đêm ở khoa sơ sinh. Vậy là đêm đấy vẫn chưa biết làm mẹ là thế nào. Cả đêm cứ chập chờn với những cơn đau mỏi, ngóng trời sáng để họ mang Nem đến. Mình tự dưng nhớ đến hình ảnh con cò trong dân gian phương Tây, em bé là do con cò mang đến. Mình cũng thấy rưa rứa, sáng hôm sau một cô hộ lý vác tới đưa cho mình 1 em bé, so số rồi bảo ký nhận, thế là mình đã là mẹ.

Họ đưa tới khá muộn, sát giờ đuổi ngưởi nhà bệnh nhân ra ngoài, nên mình chỉ kịp cầm bình sữa bà nội Nem đưa, thoắt cái đã thấy mình 1 thân một mình ôm một cái bọc mà chưa biết xử trí ra sao. Sau khi mạnh dạn cho Nem tu 1 ít sữa trong bình, chưa kịp mừng thì đã thấy con chớ hết ra rồi. Trong tay lúc đấy chẳng có gì, chẳng biết mọi người tha lôi đi đâu hết những thứ cần thiết, vết mổ vẫn còn đau nhức nhối, ko đứng dậy được, cũng ko nằm được, ko xoay ngang xoay dọc được. Rồi con khóc (híc mọi người phải nghe những tiếng khóc đầu tiên của Nem mới phê, ko phải là khóc, mà gào ré lên, cả phòng phát sợ) Mình lại càng cuống chả biết xử trí thế nào. Những bà mẹ khác (có thể đã có 1 con rồi) cũng đã có ít nhất 1 đêm làm quen với con, còn mình mới được có vài phút. 1 chị nào đấy bảo xem hay bỉm nó ướt, thì cũng ko phải. Vậy là cả sáng đấy mình ngồi gần như nguyên một tư thế, chỉ biết ôm ủ con để con thôi khóc.

Nhưng sau đó trở đi ( phải đến gần 1 tuần) thì mình vẫn chẳng biết làm gì vì 2 bà làm cho hết, luôn lấy cớ là vừa mổ nên yếu, thời gian còn tha hồ để tập chăm con. Suốt tuần đầu, thậm chí đến bây h mình vẫn còn ty tỵ với 2 bà. Buồn cười lúc nào cũng chỉ sợ Nem sẽ yêu và gắn bó với 2 bà hơn là với mẹ.

Mình vẫn nhớ cái đêm đầu tiên nằm cạnh con, bà ngoại bắt 2 mẹ con ngủ mà cả 2 đều  chống lệnh. Con nằm cạnh mình mắt ơở đen thao láo, nhìn mẹ thật dò xét, trong khi mẹ làm đủ điệu bộ để gây sự chú ý của con. Nem bây giờ vẫn nhìn mẹ nghiêm nghị lắm.

Trưa nay là hôm đầu tiên tắm cho con. Thật ra hôm qua đã tập tắm rồi, nhưng có bà ngoài đỡ. Con khóc váng lên đến nối tắm xong mẹ cũng khóc theo luôn. Tự dưng mới biết làm mẹ là thế nào.

I composed this song as a homage to Tim Burton’s famous movie “Edward Scissorhands”, but the story in the song has nothing to do with the movie. I wanted to explain the growing mentality during boyhood instead. The scissors are a symbol of juvenile violence.

I wrote about this back in February when the market was putting in its lows and everyone was wondering what their stock’s price target was or how low it was going to go. Today, after a pretty big run up, people are still wondering what their stock’s price target is, but now they’re wondering how high it’s going to go. Either way, it’s important for everyone to know how to calculate their stock’s price target.

You can do this by using either technicals or fundamentals. Today, I’m going to focus on fundamentals. And we’re going to use the P/E ratio to calculate it. Many people use P/E ratios to determine a company’s perceived undervaluation or overvaluation. But you can also use the P/E ratio to determine a stock’s upside and downside price targets as well.

The two most common P/E ratios used are the:
1. P/Es using the Trailing 12 months (or 4 quarters) of earnings
2. P/Es using the F1 (or Current Fiscal Year) Estimates

The calculation for the P/E ratio is simply price divided by earnings. For example: if a stock’s price is $30 and its earnings are $1.25, the P/E would be 24. If that stock’s earnings rose to $2.00, the P/E would now be lower at 15. ($30 price / $2.00 earnings = 15 P/E). And the most logical conclusion would be to see the stock’s price rise until its most recent multiple (or P/E ratio) of 24 was hit again.

Why is this so ‘logical’? Because if people had just been willing to pay 24 times earnings, they probably will again if they believe the company’s earnings will continue to improve. And in an environment where P/Es are increasing, they might be willing to pay even more.

You’ll also find that most of the time, a stock’s P/E ratio using EPS actuals is higher than its P/E ratio using its forward estimates. That’s because of the uncertainty regarding the projected earnings vs. the certainty of actual earnings. As the company continues to report (and meets its projections), the forward P/E ratio typically increases, which means the stock price increases as the earnings projections are coming to fruition. And as more optimism grows over future earnings growth, you may see the P/E ratio grow even more, getting even higher than its previous multiple.

So, the calculation to figure out your stock’s price target is below:
Price x ((current P/E) / (forward P/E)) = future price (or price target)
In other words, let’s say a stock’s price was $50 and its current P/E was 20. Let’s also say its forward P/E was 15. That’s: $50 * (20 / 15) = $66.50 price target. Another way of saying this is: 15 goes into 20, 1.33 times. So $50 times 1.33 equals your price target of $66.50.

The screen I’m running today, finds stocks with their P/Es under their average P/E over the last 5 years and that also have price targets of at least 20% or more above their current price.

The Parameters are:
* P/E less than Average P/E over the Last 5 Years
(I want the stock’s P/E to be less that the Average P/E over the Last 5 Years.)
* Price Target >= 1.2* the current price
(Looking for stocks whose price targets are at least 20% above their current price.)
* Zacks Rank less than or equal to 3
(No Sells or Strong Sells allowed.)

Here are 5 stocks that came thru this week’s screen:
AIRM – Air Methods Corp.
CNX – Consol Energy, Inc.
CWCO – Consolidated Water Co., Ltd.
NEM – Newmont Mining Corp.
NOVN – Noven Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
All are trading at least 20% below their projected price targets.

Nincsen különösebb oka, csak megint ez a “szeretek mindent és mindenkit” kedv van.

Olyan elégedetlen vagyok az életemmel.  Részben jogosan, mivel most is éppen blogolok ahelyett, hogy a hétfői pszichológia zh-ra tanulnék… De nem ez az egyetlen oka az elégedetlenségnek. Nem találom a helyem sem otthon, sem Esztergomban. Egy szóval sehol. Kezdek az otthoni légkörből kiszakadni, a sok gond miatt Esztergomba vágyom, viszont a koleszból is menekülni akarok. Amióta meghalt a papi, inkább szétesőben vannak a dolgok. Hihetetlenül hiányzik, és semmi nem tudja pótolni a hiányát. Ő az első ember, aki ennyire közel állt hozzám és el kellett veszíteni. Nem tudom, hogy mi értelme van az életnek akkor ha végig kell nézni, ahogy a szeretteink meghalnak.  Nem lehetne ezt valahogy kikerülni? Mondjuk, hogy egyszerre haljunk meg és akkor senkinek sem fáj?

Barátokban sem találom a másik felem. A Rékával olyan jó volt minden!  Számomra olyanok voltunk mint borsó és a héja, persze neki is meg volt az a barátja akivel így érezte. Sajnos az egyetem és a távolság szétválasztott. Nem hinném, hogy találok még egy ilyen barátot az életben. Néha úgy gondolom, hogy jobb egyedül, de mindig rájövök, hogy nem.

Na, nem akarom tovább fokozni ezt a depressziós hangulatot. Inkább feladok egy hirdetést, hogy ki akar a legjobb barátom lenni? (persze ez csak vicc volt)

O Departamento de Saúde Pública da Associação Nacional de Estudantes de Medicina vai comemorar o Dia Mundial da Diabetes com uma actividade a decorrer em Vendas Novas nos próximos dias 13, 14 e 15 de Novembro! O projecto conta com de 4 sessões de “educação para a saúde”, rastreios e sessões de exercício físico e acompanhamento nutricional. A partida será na sexta-feira dia 13 às 7h da manhã na estação de Coimbra B e a chegada será por volta das 19h de domingo no mesmo local!
