If you’re at all worried about the temperature on the MuTate site under the Westway at the moment, rest assured they have some lovely heaters to keep things warm.

But our best tip is to head to either the bar and get yourself some hot punch, or to Andi and Neneh’s Fingerlick food stand and get the rum hot chocolate – yum.

Or you could just stand close to Larry as he breathes flames… (maybe don’t do this one actually or we’ll get in trouble!)

Now here’s a song that takes me back.

When I worked in a movie theater during college, we used to play these MovieTunes CDs on repeat all day. They still use them today, at least until ‘The Twenty’ starts. The CDs are about 45 minutes long and feature a dozen or so songs from new and upcoming releases, as well as some promotional banter between tracks.

They are harmless enough for patrons of the theater, who likely hear each song once, if that. But working an 8 hour shift means hearing each of those songs about a dozen times per day, four or five days per week. Lots of potential for hair-pulling.

But the mixes were actually pretty good. I remember when Lyle Lovett’s ‘You’ve Been So Good Up to Now’ turned up on one of them, a co-worker of mine would always sing along to the “one bad move” line and turn his broom into a guitar.

Neneh Cherry’s ‘Buddy X’ was one of those Movie Tune songs I really liked. I wound up buying the album, Homebrew, and really enjoyed that, too (Movie Tunes would be thrilled!). It had the same sort of hip hop, pop and R&B blend that worked for Lauryn Hill and Arrested Development.

Cherry pretty much fell off the face of the earth after Homebrew ran its course, though her brother, Eagle Eye, had a short window of fame himself.

My wife and I are watching VH1’s “100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the ’80s” marathon.  While we only have a four-year age difference between us, it’s interesting to compare which songs we hold fondly in our memories.  Her favorite songs tend to fall around the late ’80s and mine fall in the middle of the decade.  Ah, the influence of those seventh grade mixers where we all awkwardly stood off to the side watching a few of the cool kids dance to such great songs as T’Pau’s “Heart and Soul” or Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy.”

One of the songs where we had some overlap in our pleasant reminiscing was Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance.”

Written by Cherry in 1986, it was originally released as a B-Side by her future husband, Cameron McVey, when he was a part of Morgan-McVey.  Originally called “Looking Good (With the Wild Bunch), the song was inspired by Malcolm McLaren’s 1982 song, “Buffalo Gals.”

Cherry released her own version in 1989 on her Raw Like Sushi album.  It eventually hit the #3 spot on both the U.S. Hot 100 and the U.K. singles charts.

Acoustic guitar master Michael Hedges, regularly played a version using only an acoustic guitar and a sequencer.  Hedges died tragically at the age of 43 in a car accident.  Here he is in 1990.

Finally, English indie rockers, the Rifles, do a Clash-like version.

Who’s looking good in every way?

Konstnären Moki Cherry blev 66 år. Hon avled  i sömnen i sitt svenska sommarhem, Tågarps skola i Skåne.

”Mokis mästerverk är hennes liv”, har sonen Eagle-Eye sagt. ”Varm och tuff”, säger Steve Roney som bodde  granne med familjen Cherry i Skåne.

Året är 1971. Modernas Museet arrangerar utställningen ”Utopier och visioner”. Familjen Cherry – mamma Moki, pappa Don och barnen Neneh och Eagle-Eye – har tillfälligt bosatt sig i det gamla fängelset på Skeppsholmen, bredvid museet. Till utställningen hör en stor dome, ett slags kupol, som konstruerats av arkitekten Bengt Carling och inretts av Moki. En målad lotusblomma på golvet, tygapplikationer på väggarna och rummet har blivit ett kuddlandskap. 

Till domen kom svenska och utländska musiker – som Tommy Koverhult, Maffy Falay och Nana Vasconcelos – för att spela med Don Cherry, även Moki och barnen var med. Ja, alla kunde delta. Smakprov på musiken finns på dubbel-LP:n ”Organic Music” med Mokis målade skivomslag.      

Moki Cherry växte upp som Monika Karlsson i Norrbotten. Pappa var stins och mamma jobbade på posten. På 60-talet reste hon till Stockholm för att studera på Beckmans. Hon mötte Susanna Beckman och Tonie Roos, också blivande konstnärer och vänner för livet. Så långt fram som på 2000-talet ställde de ut tillsammans i Malmö och Landskrona. ”Allt verkar vara fest” (arbetet och hela livet) skrev en recensent när kvinnornas vänskap dokumenterades i K-Special på TV.

Monika mötte den afrikanske musikern Ahmadu Jarr och fick dottern Neneh, som följde med mamma till Beckmans i en korg. Trumpetaren Don Cherry träffade hon på jazzklubben Gyllene Cirkeln. De gifte sig, fick sonen Eagle-Eye och flyttade med bägge barnen till Tågarps gamla skola i Skåne. När familjen Roney också köpt ett hus i närheten startades Kulturföreningen Tågarps skola med barnteater som en av verksamheterna.

Moki Cherry och Anita Roney ledde en musikteatergrupp med traktens barn. Alltid premiär i Tågarps skola och sen ut på turné, en av barnens föräldrar var busschaufför, till Moderna Museet,  Göteborg, Lund och Köpenhamn. Bland de unga skådespelarna fanns Eagle-Eye Cherry och Chanti Roney.

Hon var en internationell konstnär – ja, en världskonstnär. Moki Cherry hämtade intryck från flera världsdelar, inte minst Afrika. Hon hade flera uttryck också, arbetade i olika material. Efter arbetet i textil, bland annat stora applikationer som blev scenografi vid Don Cherrys konserter, började hon göra ett slags afrikansk lampor, som hon sågade ut i plywood och målade afrikanska figurer på. De senaste åren, som i somras på Galleri Kleerup i Stockholm, ägnade hon sig åt foto- och bildkollage.

Hennes konst är lekfull, färg- och livsglad men har också en ilsken ton. Humor möter allvar. Samhällskritiken blev än mer tydlig, vissa kritiker menade övertydlig, i hennes bildkollage, då hon kunde sammanföra en annons för kvinnliga underkläder med ett foto på kvinnor i burka.

Moki Cherry ställde ut i Sverige och New York och även på Martinique. Tyvärr fick hon aldrig det genombrott hon hade förtjänat. ”Hon var ledsen”, säger Gert-Olle Göransson, som hade en utställning med Mokis afrikanska lampor på Galleri Ping-Pong i Malmö , ”för att hennes konst inte uppmärksammades.”  

Moki Cherry ville bli erkänd som konstnär men inte till varje pris. Hon ville undvika det kommersiella. För att försörja sig jobbade hon som TV-scenograf  på Apolloteatern i New York och även med webbdesign. Men hon gjorde ingen hemsida åt sig själv. Det är inte Inte så lätt att hitta hennes konst på nätet.

Från slutet av 70-talet bodde familjen Cherry halva året i ett loft på Long Island. Också Tonie Roos bodde i New York och har många minnen av gemensamma upplevelser. Som när Moki och Tonie skulle ställa ut i en teaterfojé men teatern gick i konkurs. Då ordnade Moki snabbt tre nya lokaler: en privatbostad, en damfrisering och en restaurang. Eller när de två partytejerna gjorde stan, de hade inga pengar men blev lika glatt mottagna på enkla bakgåedar som glamourösa partyn.

”Moki älskade det vackra”, säger Tonie. ”Livet skulle vara vackert, varje liten måltid skulle vara vacker.” Skolan i Tågarp blev ett Moki Karlsson-hus. Trädgården skulle blomma och grönska. När Don, Moki och barnen åkte på turné i Europa med folkvagnsbuss tog hon med sig ett spritkök, en vacker duk och fint porslin.

Begravningen skedde den 25 september i Farstorps kyrka i Skåne. Där fanns familjen, släkt och vänner från många länder och  folk från Göingetrakten. Barnbarnet Naima läste mormors favoritdikt ”Ode to Silence” och den italienske gitarristen  Jayadeva spelade och sjöng ”Butterfly Friend” med musik av Don Cherry och text av Moki.

När kistan sänktes i jorden sjöng barnbarnet Tyson en negro spiritual och allt fler sjöng med. Efteråt fortsatte många till Tågarps skola för att minnas Moki Cherry med tal, fler dikter och mer musik. ”Det var årets fest”, säger en av vännerna. ”Man trodde att Moki och Don komma in och vara med på festen”, säger en annan.

Och det var hon väl, Moki, hon som älskade fester. Både Moki och Don Cherry (som dog 1995) var nog med.

Karma Culture 2 is a compilation that came out a few years back and I think it is now deleted. However, it is still available from CD Universe and Amazon (at different prices.)

It’s a double CD of superb chillout tunes with a global flavour, with some top names included: Genetic Drugs, The Nasha Experience, Natacha Atlas, Oojami, Midival Punditz, Ges-E, and Trilok Gurtu with Neneh Cherry among several others. Oh, and the last track on disk 2 was us! Which is why, every now and again, I like to remind people of this CD’s existence.

“Manchild” was the second single from swedish singer Neneh Cherry’s 1989 debut album “Raw Like Sushi“. It failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 (go figure), but went to number five on the UK chart.

The track was co-written by Cherry, McVey, and Massive Attack’s Robert Delnaja.
