It was in 1915 in the Far East of Russia, when my great grandma was born. Her name is Park Din Ok and now she lives in Tashkent with her son and his family. She was born just before the October Revolution and in the year 1925, when Lenin’s NEP was passed, her father died. The mother married second time and she was taken to the family of her uncle. As a child she worked about the house and collected herbs. At the age of 16 Din Ok left her uncle’s house to study at boarding school in Nahodka. She studied there till 1937. By this year, the year of Stalin’s repressions, she had already finished 8 grades. Soon together with other Korean people she was deported to Kzyl-Orda, Kazakhstan.

It was very difficult to live in complete solitude without any connections, support, home or money. Fortunately, some time later she found her relatives, living near Tashkent in kolkhoz “Pravda”, and moved to them. There she succeeded to finish school and was planning to enter a teacher’s training college in Ashkhabad. Education was very important for her and she dreamed about teaching herself, about giving knowledge to other people. But the dreams were to fail because the Great Patriotic War burst out. So she went back to Tashkent where she met her future husband.

A new period of her life began. She has 4 children: a couple of boys and a couple of girls (one of them my grandma is). The time went; children grew up and got their own families. Today we live in different countries and don’t see each other often. So, every time I think about my great grandma I miss her very much. She is the only “ancestor” of mine that I have seen. She still works hard about the house: cooks, washes the dishes, etc. And what is most important, she is active, really intellectual and strong. About ten years ago she injured her leg. The fracture was so serious that she could lose any possibility to walk but she overcame this infirmity. That’s why I adore her inner strength and spiritual power.

Now, it is “your turn” Darija! (O: The day before we left Kathmandu we visited Bhaktapur. I think it was different than your stay, because than was the first day of Tihar. As the guide told us, the squares are usually empty (as far as something can be “empty” in Nepal) but than – because of the holiday - it was full of traders and little markets. In this way I think my pictures and the atmospheres are different, but I hope in a way it can substitute your lost pictures.

Viszonyításképp a távolság kb.

Bhaktapurból szinte teljesen kizárták a motorizációt.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, the man who authored “The Malay Dilemma”is sort of in a state of dilemma with his own retirement after 22 years in power. Initially, he was sacked from the UMNO Supreme Council by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the inaugural Prime Minister, and his book (1970) was banned. That was after the racial riot of May 13, 1969. However, a shrewd, cunning & clever politician that he is, he maneuvered his way back from the political wilderness, and on 16 July 1981 established himself as the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia. What sort of epitaph awaits him? Only time will tell . . . as it is, his political chess game is not over yet . . .

A doctor by profession, he was born in Alor Setar, Kedah in December 1925. Now 83 years young, he’s still mentally alert & physically fit, except for his heart. The youngest of nine children, his school teacher father was a half Indian, son of a Malayalee muslim from Kerala. Mahathir’s own mother, like his own father’s, was a Malay. In Malaysia, we refer these people of Indian-Malay mix as “Mamak”. He graduated as a medical doctor from King Edward VII Medical College (the present National University of Singapore) where he registered as an Indian. Dr. Siti Hasmah binti Haji Mohamad Ali, a fellow doctor & former classmate & a Malay, became his wife. Together they have four sons & three daughters – all filthy rich. To survive during the Japanese Occupation years, he once sold “goreng pisang” (banana fritter).

He is a bit confused about his racial origin, and like all the other migrants from Indonesia & the Arab world, he claims himself to be a “Bumiputra”, which literally means “sons of the soil” – the kind of status that enjoys all the special rights & privileges conferred by law & legislation. For all other racial components, though similarly born & bred in the country, they are denied of the same status, let alone to beget the entitlements.

People who are not native Malays in Malaysia are generally more ultra & extreme in their outlook. I guess they need to prove their loyalty, so to say. Generally too, they are more aggressive, competitive & able than the average lay-back & traditional easy-going Malays, who are largely confined to the rural areas or on the fringes of towns & cities, which historically were established by the Chinese. The Indian component, apart from those involved as labourers in the rubber estates, are also urban in nature engaged in trade & commerce to some extent or as professional.

During his time of political wilderness, Mahathir wrote and published his little book “The Malay Dilemma” in 1970. It was a political exercise & brilliant ploy to attract attention. In it he was attempting to explain as to why the Malays were lesser off than the Chinese, their lack of economic progress, the reasons for the racial riot of May 13, the contributory factors of incest, in-breeding, heredity & also the environment. He even criticised Tunku Abdul Rahman for favouring the Chinese in his administration. The crux of the matter was he wielded a lot of support from the UMNO & he was back on the political road. The rest they say is history.

He used & abused his political associates, criticising & condemning them once their usefulness was over. His political saga with his former deputy, Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is the famous or infamous one. There had been others like Tun Musa Hitam, also once a trusted deputy, Tun Ghaffar Baba, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, affectionately known as Pak Lah, the Prime Minister preceding the present Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak. The present one, raised & supported by him, now appeared to be going on his own way – not listening to him as like Pak Lah. All his big proposed projects have either been shelved or ignored completely. Mahathir is not standing by idly looking on. He is really fuming.

Mahathir is also known to be an outspoken critic of the Westerners. His tongue is either very lose or he’s a big mouth. His quarrels with George Soros, our former Prime Minister Paul Keating, the American or British never failed to hit the headlines. Even across the causeway, he’s not too friendly with Lee Kuan Yew. Here you can sense a tint of jealousy. Mahathir is far from his Singapore rival’s league in terms of recognition, respect & honour. Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew still commands attention in Singapore, he’s a much sought after speaker internationally, & he’s got his name edged in perpetuity in NUS – Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Singapore, without any natural resources, was doomed to fail after its separation from Malaysia, has outpaced & outrun Malaysia in more ways than one – all attributed to Lee Kuan Yew. Mahathir has a great distrust & distaste for the West – definite big critic for Western globalisation.

Prior to this date, there was the unspoken giving & taking that stood at least on a bearable proportion. Since then all hell broke lose and everything of economic value was forcefully ripped off by law & legislation (NEP). Tun Abdul Razak, the second Prime Minister, father of the present Prime Minister, initiated the move with new national education program of language switching from English to Bahasa Malaysia, and the introduction of NEP (New Economic Policy) doing away with the supposedly outdated 5-year Plan.

Nobody heeded the warning to be more politically involved instead of wholly concentrating on the economic side of affairs. The less competitive Malays wisely seized the political power & thereby established their standing. Everything became to be stamped & controlled by them. The dawn arrived frightfully sooner than imaginable. They have been taking 30% share of everything, without any monetary input or talent, that which you’ve been building through sweat & blood dwindled in size & significance overnight. Even all trading & commerce with China have to be through Pernas, the Malay controlled government agency. Progressively, marginalization set in for the Chinese & the Indians in all spheres of livelihood in the country – education, employment, business, government contracts and others.

Our family takes origin from a place called Unai ravine, which is far way from Almaty, in eastern Kazakhstan near to Semipalatinsk. We belong to a well-known tribe Naiman of Orta (Middle) Zhuz. My grandfather’s name is Zhangasy. He was born in the end of XIX century, in 1882 year, in a family of Bi-Sary. From Kazakh “bi” means judge and “sary” – yellow. So Bi-Sary, his father, was a judge which was elected by people for his honesty and nobility. Bi-Sary is origin of my surname Bissarinova.

As you can guess Zhangasy was born in quite wealthy family. As in early ages he became an orphan he had to make something for living. Time passed and he had his own mill with workers on his fields. Zhangasy participate in First World War and in Civil war. But after the October Revolution in 1917 all his fortune was taken away. He didn’t struggled a lot for it because he thought that the time came to become equal with everyone.

After some years he was volostnoi which means that he ruled in Unai acres. In years of NEP (New Economy Policy in 1920s) he made a new fortune, but the Soviet government took it away again. So he started to work with a famous ataman of those times, ataman Anenkov. But because of this, two officers came to shoot him, they were so drunk that they missed twice and didn’t understand that. My grandfather just pretended to be dead.

Then he moved to a big city, and for those times, it was Semipalatinsk. There, in the time of Second World War he was too old to fight, he met his second wife, Umit. She was a 19 years old widow with a child from her first husband, who died fighting against fascistic soldiers, and my grandfather was 59. When my father was born in 1959, my grandfather was 77.

Other interesting fact is that my fathers eldest sister from first marriage was 2 years elder than my fathers mother. After my father there were born a sister, but she had deadly disease caused by radiation of Semipalatinsk polygon. Zhangasy worked until 96, he wanted to work more, but the employers were afraid of his health. In spite of such age he felt very strong and healthy, also he was visited by gerontologists from Russia. After his retirement, he said that he won’t live for a long time anymore, because he needs to work to feel alive. He died in 1984 for two weeks to his 102 birthday.

I didn’t know him in real life, but I feel like I did. My father used to tell me a lot about him since I was a child. I’m proud to have such grandfather, he always helped poor people, when there were dzut [famine] (when a mass murrain [herd of cattle] and people had nothing to eat) he used to give them wheat bags. As I heard he was very strong until his last breath. My father used to ask which time my grandfather liked most, he answered – the time of Russian Imperia. He had a very vivid life, went through the most significant events for the last 100 years and had a big family. I wish I could have known him.

This is indeed scary…

(Sometimes people forget why exams are held in the first place. Image source: http://dailymail.co.uk)

Remember when a certain political party controlled media, blasted the non-Malays for questioning the Malay’s special rights? Or when some politicians played the racial card to garner the support from one particular race? The problem is and very often, the same media or politicians failed to mention as to why there has been some strong voices questioning on the said policies.

No one from the ruling front, although they know this is true, has admitted openly that sometimes, in order to make things better, certain things must be questioned and criticised.

Certainly any ideal policies that promote equality, improvement of quality of life and elimination of poverty is worth to be pursued aggressively. But the thing is, as with any “good” policies out there, good implementation and strict enforcement is something else to be desired. It is certainly something to be questioned when the same policies are abused and mismanaged to enrich a very few.

The concept of “Ketuanan Melayu” which has been actively pursued by the ruling political party, for example, has been in question for many reasons, simply because it’s meaning of the concept has not been conclusive, especially when the same people who are promoting this concept are also promoting other concepts (such as 1Malaysia) that are in direct violation of the first. Sometimes people get so confused.

But that is not what I wanted to elaborate here.

I don’t know why but the “Ketuanan Melayu” concept crossed my mind when I read Citizen Nades’s column titled “Learning the law the wrong way” and the part that got me concerned is this:-

The sad end to this saga is that the examiner who failed this student and 17 others was ordered to re-mark and make them pass. She refused and is now on the streets because her conscience refused to allow her to do so. She had set her own grading criteria which was approved by the university and stuck to it. One student got just four marks out of a possible 60 and for doing her job religiously, the examiner was labelled a “pengkhianat” (traitor).

The column did not say for sure why the examiner was asked to remark the failed students and make them pass. It could be due to certain constraint in the law school’s standards and quality.

Citizen Nades talked about law students and highlighted the scary thought of having these failed law students handling multi million contracts for the government in future. What happens if the same thing is happening in medical schools? Failed medical students who one day might be doing an open heart surgery on you or your loved ones.

In the case of the law students in Citizen Nades’ column, what should have happened is that failed student should have left failed and booted from law school. They never had the right qualities to be lawyers in the first place. They should not been forcefully passed, just to show the “right numbers” on some statistics.

At the very extreme, allow the retest several times but if in the end, these students still fail, then leave them failed. Their destiny lies elsewhere.

Its just a little bit of a penis and really doesnt interfere much with my life. the reason I haven’t talked about it is that its not a big deal to me. like come on. its not like we all go around talking about our vags. I think this is a great opportunity to make other multiple gendered people feel more comfortable with their bodies.
