I had promised more pictures because I did something.  Don’t ask me what I did, ’cause I don’t remember, but I promised more pictures and, with the holidays upon us, I have no photo shoots planned for a while.  So, here are some oldies.  But goodies.  Nerds are people too, after all.  And, I don’t cook, so there’s no opportunity for the scantily-clad cook pictures on Turkey-day, either.  If I cooked, my whole family would be dead.  So, enjoy these instead.

…gibt es auf einer Seite namens Golden Age Comic Book Series, die ich heute grade via Nerdcore entdeckt habe. Übrigens ist das hier grade eine Premiere: Der erste Blogeintrag, den ich aus der Uni, ganauergesagt von einbem Stabi-Computer schreibe. Und das alles nur weil eine gewisse Person mir verboten hat nach Hause zu gehen Aber zurück zum Film. Neben Bildern von sehr interessanten Vintage-Comics  oder auch von Marilyn Monroe gibt es hier auch extrem coole alte Filmposter zu finden, z.B. alte Horror-Schinken mit Bela Lugosi und Boris Karloff oder aus dem (S)Exploitation-Genre (zu deutsch frei übersetzt etwa:  Softporno mit künstlerischem Anspruch) . Beispiele für beides siehe unten. Allesamt sehr künstlerisch gestaltete Poster zu Filmen, von denen man nicht gadacht hätte, das es sie geben könnte. Leider ist kein Shop dabei, wo man die Dinger kaufen könnte – muss ich doch wieder auf’m Flohmarkt am Sonntag schauen.

The highlight of my day?  Using my XBox Live account to update my Facebook.

I finally have a reason to use my messenger keypad other than entering XBL Points Card codes!  Oh, the nerdiness.  Now, to put my daughter to bed so I can play some more Dragon Age: Origins.

Okay, so the OAD (Oxford American Dictionary) isn’t exactly the OED (substitute “English” for “American”), but word-of-the-year-ness is nevertheless forthcoming.  Tah-dah!

“Unfriend” has been named the word of the year by the New Oxford American Dictionary, chosen from a list of finalists with a tech-savvy bent.Unfriend was defined as a verb that means to remove someone as a “friend” on a social networking site such as Facebook.

“It has both currency and potential longevity,” said Christine Lindberg, senior lexicographer for Oxford’s U.S. dictionary program, in a statement.

“In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year.”

I’ve always preferred “defriend” to “unfriend”, but I guess that’s just me.  Some other interesting contenders this year

In technology, there was “hashtag,” which is the hash sign added to a word or phrase that lets Twitter users search for tweets similarly tagged; “intexticated” for when people are distracted by texting while driving, and “sexting,” which is the sending of sexually explicit SMSes and pictures by cellphone.

Finalists from the economy included “freemium,” meaning a business model in which some basic services are provided for free, and “funemployed,” referring to people taking advantage of newly unemployed status to have fun or pursue other interests.

In the political and current affairs section, finalists included “birther,” meaning conspiracy theorists challenging President Barack Obama’s U.S. birth certificate, and “choice mom,” a person who chooses to be a single mother.

Novelty words making the shortlist were “deleb,” meaning a dead celebrity, and “tramp stamp,” referring to a tattoo on the lower back, usually on a woman.

And, apparently, there’s just no getting away from the birthers.  Sigh.

Das Prinzip Wikipedia verändert neben vielem anderen auch das Verhältnis zu uns selbst, auch indem wir das Internet zunehmend als externes Gedächtnis nutzen. Japanese engineers have taken us one step closer to the robot revolution by developing a machine inspired by the movie Aliens.

The Dual-Arm Power Amplication Robot by Activelink gives users superhuman strength and resembles the hydraulic exoskeleton worn by Sigourney Weaver in the climactic scene of the sci-fi classic.

My debut post will feature perhaps my favorite rapper, whose hoody, though now a bit oversized, I love to wear with pride. You may have heard his voice on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, on his popular song Fett’s Vette, or maybe you haven’t…

His name is Chris Ward, but he is more well known by his moniker: mc chris. And yes, it is meant to be lower case, without periods. mc chris has a very high pitched voice and knows it, but I will ask you to look beyond the novelty of a 34 year old white male that sounds funny, raps, and raps about things like candy and star wars. Because, mc chris deserves better than that.

When it comes to music, I’m a sucker for lyrics. I believe that this is where my love of rap music comes from; clever, well-rhymed lyrics, that “flow” smoothly. And mc chris has flow. Though the lyrics in his songs may not always be the most mature, or the most politically correct, or the most child-friendly, I can’t think of too many of his songs in which the lyrics aren’t very well-written. His songs are often allusive to pop culture, very often 80’s pop culture, and though I don’t get half of them at first, upon looking them up I often have to fight to hide a smile because of how cleverly placed they are.

When it comes to content, mc chris is all over the board. From songs about his trouble with women, to songs about bounty hunters and their vehicles, to songs about drugs or candy. And I really can’t help but emphasize that they “flow,” though it is hard for me to put into words exactly how or why. One artist that you may have heard of,

I’m basically posting this, because there is absolutely NO way you guys would believe this story on its own. So here is the pictorial proof that someone went there.

I wasn’t one of those guys that HAD to have a geek groom’s cake. Seriously, Lauren pushed for it, but I respectfully declined. I don’t know why I didn’t get on board with the idea, really. It was my wedding day after all, not my 7th birthday. I didn’t care what my cake looked like as long as it was delicious. Which by the way, it totally was. Italian Cream Cake with sugared grapes, pecans, and buttered coconut icing…I still have dreams about that cake. But I’m getting off topic.

While I have seen many cool grooms’ cakes that make me feel a tinge of regret that I didn’t geek out, this most definitely isn’t one of those cakes.

Chris Trevas is a Star Wars artist. That’s cool. He makes his living drawing and painting cool Star Wars stuff. Color me envious. It makes sense that his groomsmen would be Storm Troopers, or that they might exit the service to the Imperial March. But Chris, this is just…too much.

Ultra Geek

I feel like this is ripe with puns, but my brain isn’t coming up with anything great right now, so I’ll present it in its original teh awesome state.  And here I thought our government was wasting grant money on ridiculous shit!

Work done in the name of science is earnest, educational, and occasionally downright dumb.

A paper published in the current issue of Physical Review Letters describes research done on the author’s bathroom rug. The author investigated everything about wrinkles in rugs — known also as rucks — including how they form, how they move, and what happens when they interact.

Bumps in bathmats?

“It’s always used as an analogy for lots of things in physics,” said Physicist Dominic Vella from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, adding that in order to know for sure if these analogies are accurate, “you have to first understand the physics of the ruck in the rug.”

Confirming analogies is fine in your free time, but Vella’s work was nurtured and encouraged by a generous grant from The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, an educational trust that supports research in science and engineering in England. And the Royal Commission is run by the Duke of Edinburgh. In other words, his royal highness Prince Philip gave Vella money to study his bathmat.

To be fair, the team’s works is quite interesting. Vella’s team studied the form that bumps take, how well they hold that shape and how fast they move across a flat surface. First, Vella and his team tested rubber mats of different thicknesses on a variety of flat surfaces. After observing how a wrinkle in the rubber mat developed on wood, sandpaper and metal, the team compared it to the behavior of Vella’s own bathroom rug on the same surfaces. To see how these wrinkles move, the team used a high-speed camera to film the mats while a team member waved one end up and down.

They found that larger wrinkles have an easier time supporting themselves no matter what kind of surface the rug sits on. Smaller bumps smooth out quickly unless there’s a lot of friction holding them up from the surface below. For most types of carpet Vella tested, moving bumps travel at around one meter per second, though smaller ones tend to move faster than larger ones. When two wrinkles collide, they combine to form a bigger one that moves even faster.

I’m really getting into D&D lately. I play the online game and I bought the older version of the books. I think I might try and join a campaign at a local collector’s shop. I think they have games every Saturday.

I mostly want to be the Dungeon Master and referee the game for my nephew. I would love to just make up adventures and exciting experiences. This whole imagination thing might be a good learning experience.
