We took a road trip to Western Massachusetts recently. Highlights included a trip to Herman Melville’s house, where he wrote Moby Dick.

Mass Moca and the new Sol LeWitt Installation, on view now through 2033. (It feels weird to type 2033!)

and a trip up Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Mass during peak foliage. Herman Melville could see this peak from his study, and took inspiration from it for Moby Dick because the snow covered profile reminded him of a Sperm Whale’s back.

It’s the post you have been waiting for! Or fearing. Or saying “meh” about. Or lau

It’s the post you have been waiting for! Or fearing. Or saying “meh” about. Or laughing at in an embarrassed manner. Well, let me tell you something, you who find Dungeons and Dragons hopelessly nerdy. It… is. But lots and lots of other things are as well. Hey, World of Warcraft player who “grinds” for 20 hours a week: do you *really* think your pastime is less nerdy than me hanging out with a bunch of my friends for 6 hours every other week? At least I have 5 guys pretending to slay the dragon with me (no, that last sentence does not help). For that matter, is there *really* a large difference between this and, say, poker night or being a “fan” of a sports franchise that has absolutely nothing in common with you save the fact that they play home games in a city near you and occasionally allow you to buy tickets to see them?

THE ANSWER IS NO. BE QUIET.

Moving on… I assume you have the DM’s guide, the Player’s Handbook, and the Monster Manual, since these are required to play the game. You also need dice, of course, and your mother’s basement. You can rent it out during the week to baseball statheads.

Monster Manual 2. I will give you Reason #1 why you need to buy the Monster Manual 2: the rust monster. Yes, for some reason this beast was left out of #1. It’s at once perhaps the stupidest monster idea and the greatest ever. Basically, when you encounter one, it is the DM telling you that you have too much cool stuff and he needs to balance the game, with feet. Now they have a new iteration of the rust monster called the dweomer stealer, which… steals dweomers. WTF is a dweomer? Anyway, it eats magic items the way the rust monster eats plate mail armor. I always find these things to be f’ing hilarious: they flat out suck but the fighter in your party who will charge at an adult red dragon will run from one of these things like a little beeyotch.

Featured on the cover, the Demogorgon. Yeah, it’s a two-headed baboon orangutan with tentacles for arms. Say that five times and you will become as autistic as Jenny McCarthy’s child.

Not featured, and by “not featured” I mean “they damn well better be in MM3″: blink dogs.

Dungeon Master’s Guide 2. I am really high on this guide, which could have been a really useless piece of crap… or could have been useful by having stuff in it that should have been in the original DMG. Instead, it’s a great supplement. It’s not as heavy on paragon-level attributes as it advertises, but that’s really fine with me – I think the other books that are out there do a good job of that, particularly if you choose to play in one of DnD’s pre-created gameworlds (more on one of them in a bit).

What the DMG II adds more than anything else is a really, really nice blueprint for adding some heavy RPG elements to your game. DnD has long been the last bastion of fantasy tactical wargaming before you dip over the edge and into Warhammer. It’s decidedly to the RP side of that but at the same time it’s built nowhere near, say, a White Wolf game of Fantasy Monster: The Adjective. 4E is deceptive in this regard: mechanically, it’s a lot more complicated for some classes and only a little bit less for others. Also, virtually all the powers, skills, abilities, magic items, and so on are designed to have some sort of direct application in combat.

The deceptive bit is that this “mechanics are everything” dynamic actually makes it *easier* to roleplay a character of your choice. First of all, there are lots and lots of decisions to make at every level for every character. No longer is your character development limited to a feat every other level, a few spells, and maybe a STR gain at 6th and 11th. Now, every time you gain a level, you literally add a new wrinkle to what your character does on the battlefield.

But that’s not all or anywhere near close to all. By moving all those BS skills like Cooking or Singing off the character sheet, you actually free your players to come up with their own backgrounds to a much greater extent. Was the character a master pastry chef (note: ridiculous example used for effect) before embarking on a life as a bard? Well, you just note it in the background and roleplay it. In 3rd, you had to spend skill points on Cooking: Pastry, skill points that would not be spent on things like Spot Hidden or Appraise and which would therefore make your character less aWesome than a guy who concentrated on nothing but combat.

The DMG2 expands on this by giving the intermediate GM a set of questions he can ask of all new characters as they’re being created. This allows the players to create a fairly complicated backstory without having to do a bunch of homework and in turn allows the DM to get something that he and the rest of the party can work with to generate a campaign around. This was, of course, possible before but it’s nice to see a game company codify things. Additionally, it provides a means of literally allowing the entire party to help provide flavor, more input in the world than “I choose to fight the goblins”, and to stay in the game when the plot calls for the party to split up or for some backstory or a major decision to be explored via a dream sequence.

Open Grave. I am not the biggest fan of zombie horror movies, or really horror movies in general. I guess that as far as horror movies go, I like zombie movies more than most other horror sub-genres. That being said, I *love* Shaun of the Dead and the video game Left For Dead and, let’s face it, what would be cooler than moving that meme into a fantasy roleplaying session (note: if you are not a DnD player I forbid you to answer this question)? Again, you could always do it without an official supplement, but Wizards of the Coast make it much, much easier with this bad boy.

Also, there are several mini-adventures in here – always helpful if you, like me, prefer pulling a campaign out of their own rear end rather than meticulously plan out every single dungeon yourself – and lots and lots of new undead monsters, including several different kinds of brains in assorted jars, disembodied hands if you want to go with an Addams Family theme, and lots more kinds of zombies and ghouls and so on (MM1 and MM2 have plenty of “normal” undead, so the baddies in here tend to be a little creative). On top of that, there are all the elements to play a 28 Days Later style campaign with zombie-ism caused by infection, undead that sprint after you, and so on.

Dungeon Delve. This supplement actually serves several purposes. For me, it is a wonderful piece of insta-encounter that allows me to cover for when the party I am DMing does something that I did not anticipate in a big way. Boom! “You see an abandoned keep”. That buys me 2 or 3 hours, including some extra RPing I like to throw in, and might just allow me to buy enough time to close the session and spend the next week or two figuring out what to do with the PC choices.

It also helps with more or less the exact opposite situation: if you don’t really want to DM but just want to send a party on a quick, level-appropriate one-shot before the regular DM gets back from vacation or perhaps just to test out how some character designs will work in combat, this Delve’s for you. You could theoretically take a party all the way from level 1 to 30 just by playing through this book. You’d have to fudge the XP a little bit and maybe hand out a few more magic items, but it could be done.

The third and perhaps most important thing that Delve does is plot out a whole bunch of sample encounters: 3 per level for a total of 90 in the book. You can read through this and get a great idea as to how to both set up an individual encounter that’s fun and challenging and also put together an entire day’s worth of matches. The dynamics of the encounter have changed a great deal from earlier versions. This book helps you to understand just *how* they’ve changed.

Eberron: The Campaign Guide and The Player’s Guide. Okay, I cheated on the last one because it’s two books. Since you really need both to run this gameworld, I still stand by it.

First, buying a pre-generated gameworld just plain saves time. There’s still a lot to learn about Eberron and you’d (eventually) do well to go out and buy all the 3.5 material that’s available for this world, but reading a couple hundred pages with pretty pictures and fancy graphs takes a whole heck of a lot less time than making everything up on your own. I know, I know, a lot of DMs do what they do precisely because they *get* to make up their own world, but here’s the thing: that’s really not your job as Dungeon Master. Your job as DM is to facilitate a good time through everyone involved. If that means having your party explore a detailed world because they’re all Storytellers, so be it. If that means getting into lots of combat because they’re all Slayers… well, that’s a perfectly legitmate reason to play as well. If you want to bring those Slayers out of their slaying shells and, you know, roleplay more and get into the milieu, the way to do it is not by forcing them to digest lots of world-related crap but to draw them in session by session.

Having a pre-genned world actually helps with this in that it allows you to take a step back and work more on the game-facilitation aspects of things. I know first-hand how tempting it is to just make your party play the game your way: after all, you’re the one who spent dozens of hours making that world and designing all those maps and creating all those world leaders, and now a bunch of jackoffs who couldn’t even create their own characters ahead of time want to sidestep your main plotline and just go break into houses??? ARGH. Anyway, the players aren’t hijacking things because they hate you, they’re trying to play the game their way. Using somebody else’s game world helps you to see that.

So… why Eberron and not Forgotten Realms? FR has pretty much become the generic gameworld DnD is based upon. That’s all well and good, and I guess if you are bringing older players back into the game, introducing Baldur’s Gate and Elminster and so on can help get them into it, but Eberron is just plain *different*. It’s a lot more Star Wars than the “points of light” system DnD calls its base. You’ve got individuals rather than races embracing good and evil, far-flung lands to explore, creative applications of magic that look a lot like technology (see: sending stones and the lightning rail), and lots of competing factions that can put together a really The Third Man kind of feel if you allow it to. There’s a good deal of Indiana Jones in this gameworld as well, not to mention The Maltese Falcon if you can think that way about an RPG. In its own way, it takes players just a little bit out of the genre without blowing up the game mechanics. And that, to me, is cool.

Last night I gave my first ever presentation on Project 2010 and Project Server 2010 to the Microsoft Office System Special Interest Group (MOSSIG) in Melbourne. This occasion marked a number of firsts:

The first time Project or Project Server had been presented at MOSSIG

The first time Project 2010 and Project Server 2010 had been seen by a number of people

and most importantly, the first time I have ever presented to a user group.

What I thought was going to be daunting, was actually quite exhilarating. I loved it. The presentation was very light on slides and heavy on showing off some of the awesome features of Project and Project Server 2010. Unfortunately the demo gods were against me, and one part of the demo died, but the rest behaved itself.

Anyway, why am I sharing this with you? Well I have been light on the blog posts here and have been spending my time absorbing all things Project 2010, getting my hands dirty on some big PS projects and starting a new blog where I can share my findings and thoughts with the community called EPMPIRE.COM.

I will be posting on all things Microsoft EPM over at EPMPIRE regularly, you can subscribe at http://epmpire.wordpress.com/feed/ or alternatively, go to www.epmpire.com and enter your email address to get the posts directly in your inbox.

Everyone knows what floppy disks are. They mark the real beginning of the evolution of data storage,

Everyone knows what floppy disks are. They mark the real beginning of the evolution of data storage, which meant smaller space and more capacity.

Yet, now they remain useless, as they only hold 1.44MB. I can’t even put a song onto that much.

But after you think about it, you can see that floppy disks are very versatile – in the same way as duct tape.

In fact, you could almost definitely make a floppy disk wallet.

But the thing that I really want to show you is a floppy disk NOTEPAD!

Floppy Notepad!

I must say, making it was simple.

Here’s what you’ll need:

2 Floppy disks with lock switches (more on that later)

A small stack of the paper of your choice

Scissors

A hole punch (preferably 3 hole)

A Pencil

Zip ties

First things first- Your floppy disk needs to have a lock/unlock switch. This is so 2 holes on the same side are exposed to put the zip tie through, as shown below:

Two Holes!

After, trace the outline of a floppy disk on a stack of no more than 4 sheets of your preferred paper (I used graph paper). Next, cut about 1/4 cm. inside from the lines you traced and cut out the square. After cutting out one stack, you can make another outline and do the same thing somewhere else on the paper(s).

Cutting...

After you should have a nice stack of papers.Split the stack into shorter stacks that can be done by a hole puncher. On the top paper of each stack put your floppy on it and trace the inside of the litle holes that are on the floppy disk.

Tracing the holes...

Next, go at the stacks with the hole puncher. Punch as close as you can to exactly centered to the tracings you made from the holes on the floppy (exactly centered might have you cutting through the edge of the paper). After, line all of the stacks and floppies up (one floppy on top, the stacks, then one floppy on the bottom). put the zip ties through the holes on the floppies, then the holes in the stac, then the other floppy. loop it around and tighten until it is VERY LOOSE!! You don’t want it tight or else it won’t be able to open or close! You should be able to have the two floppies open side by side with a little space in between, as shown below.

You need space between the disks!

Now you’re done! Trust me, everybody will be JEALOUS of how awesome it is.

Now go off and write…well…whatever needs to be written!

Go write... well...whatever needs to be written!

***I hope you enjoyed this special how-to, with “special” images. I’ll do something special for most of the major holidays in the future.***

An important lesson all journalists should use is to never belittle the secretary.
Because I am still what some might consider a rookie, you can take that statement for whatever you think it is worth, but I believe whole heartedly that when you make friends with the secretaries, dispatchers, clerks and so on, you can get whatever you need to get as soon as possible.
They are essentially the gatekeepers, or the keymasters (depending if you enjoy a good Ghostbusters reference from time to time), to the news.
Today I got the cell phone number for a trustee in the area, unfortunately the cell phone didn’t work because this trustee is camping down in my original southern neck of the woods. So I called back to the secretary and she gave me the landline to connect me to the cabin she was staying at, at a campground. Still no luck. Then, I called back and joked around a bit and threw some names around and got more phone numbers. BUT ALAS, the phone line is busy. I haven’t heard a busy signal in ages, thanks landline for bringing me out of my “everyone has voicemail” mentality.

Now, please, let me finish my story so I can prepare myself for a four-hour drive back to Dayton tonight.

What do you do on a Saturday morning? I’d like to say that I lounge around eating and doing blog-world stuff, relaxing and enjoying the sunshine…

Okay, I don’t have it bad. But last Saturday was pretty bad. Not only did I not wake up to brilliant fall sunshine and chirping birds and a warm bowl of oatmeal, but it was just like the school week—opening my eyes and wondering why it doesn’t seem like I’ve opened them at all. Good morning… 5:30 AM!

Why 5:30 AM? Because I had a brain-a-thon from 8:00 AM until 12:30 PM, which required me to wake up at 5:30 AM… and oh. my. Lord. x_x Who dares to say that sitting on your butt doesn’t take effort?! I was exhausted from head to toe—parts of my body that hadn’t even budged for the past seven hours were tired! And don’t even get me started on my hands and feet. Twirling pencils and swinging feet is totally sweat-inducing stuff… phew.

… Uh, yes, I was testing for four and a half hours. Yes, I woke up at 5:30 AM on a Saturday morning to take a test for four and a half hours. Yes, I am a nerd. o-o That’s a topic I could go on and on about, but that’s a ramble I’ll save for another day… Because like any other athlete, a nerd gets hungry too, yes?

Well, I was positively starving by the end of this test. Seven hours awake and four and a half hours on my butt equated to six hours (!!) without food. Six hours? No food? That’s just bait for cranky Candice. I think my brain cells were so malnourished at the end of the test that they were eating themselves. Pity the poor souls who had to listen to me spout incoherent (cranky) nonsense before I got something into my tummy! To hold back the demons, I pleaded with a fellow nerd to please oh please give me some of your cracker I’ll love you forever just please… SHARING IS CARING!

“. . .”

Yeah, I demolished her with that line.

I’m aware that lack of food + a few hours = hungry, but I like to say that I got hungry because I got the “brain munchies.” i.e., stomach is empty, brain is shriveled, brain robbed stomach. I suppose there’s a different cure for this for everyone, so I ask: How do you cure your brain munchies?

My cure was a lunch at Fire Works Pizza, a small establishment neighboring Tuscarora Mill serving (some? most?) local fare, and not just pizza, either. It totally sounded like my kind of place. Ironically, pizza doesn’t show up anywhere in this post…

To start off, we ordered a Fire Works salad to split three ways—but I ended up eating most of it If I can remember correctly, this had mozzarella, parmesan, cherry tomatoes, roast chicken, pepperoni, salami, and proscuitto on a bed of greens. My opinion? Well, I did say that I ended up eating most of it… and just look at that mozzarella <3 Maybe my short-term memory is failing me, and it wasn’t mozzarella?!… It was so fresh and creamy—kind of like feta cheese texture + mozzarella flavor. Love. The saltiness of the cured meats added a delightful savoriness, of course. You just can’t go wrong with salty meat and creamy cheese.

And, going against the name of the restaurant (and this post), I ordered a non-pizza item for my main course, the wood roasted vegetables with vidalias over creamy polenta.

Errrr… what?

Unfortunately, these vegetables, which included eggplant, vidalia onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes, were not very roasted at all. In fact, the bottom half of the bowl was filled with an oil-sauce soup—it honestly seemed more like a sautée if anything, and not a very delicious one, either. If I had a say in the names of the dishes, I would rename this one drowning in oil vegetables with explain what this means over ball of mashed corn. Mmmmm.

By the way, what does “over” mean again? I may be blind, but I can see that the polenta ball is clearly over the vegetables, not the other way around?

Fire Works Pizza, you lied about a completely useless characteristic. Regardless of what was over what, this dish was bad.

This failure of a dish is the reason why I ended up finishing off the salad, which was ten times tastier. I couldn’t eat more than a couple bites of the vegetables in this—they were so strangely mushy and saturated with oil. When I think “roasted,” I imagine crisp, charred edges and deep, toasty flavors… and I was sorely disappointed. The super-tart, squishy tomatoes added a uniquely unpleasant flavor to the whole mess, and the rest of the veggies all tasted the same. No individuality, boo.

On the other hand, the polenta was pretty good—buttery and rich—but it wasn’t very creamy. If something is creamy, shouldn’t it be able to melt in my mouth and give me a mouthgasm? Well, not this ball o’ butter. Oh Fire Works Pizza, why can’t you just make things mushy when they need to be? Why torture my poor “roasted” veggies??? :/

At least it looks yummy…

What was your most disappointing restaurant experience? I’d have to say the ones that made me throw up: Macaroni Grill (some cheesy pasta) and Ruby Tuesday’s (crab cake). >< I won’t let this one bad dish ruin my enthusiasm to return, though!! There’s still lots of tasty-sounding fare on their menu

Ohhh… and I have to ask…

Are YOU a nerd? o-o Come on, don’t be shy!

Hello there, how are you?

Today I was browsing the Internet, acquiring some knowledge if you prefer to call it like that, and I came across a posting that had the right path of creativity, therefore, I decided to re-invent it, edit it, and change it for your delightful entertainment. Hopefully all of us girls can identify.. By all means, if you want to add another point, be my guest, this list can only keep getting better, that way we will find PRINCE CHARMING…

My Boyfriend Application and Test

First, a little about me. I’m a 26-year-old, very good looking and intelligent Latina, with a full time Job and attending University. I’m tired of wasting my time, so I have formulated some mandatory criteria in part A, and part B is based on points.

Part A

1) You must be born male. I’ll need to see a birth certificate proving so.

2) You must own something to wear to a formal reception. And at least a couple formal shoes.
3) You must not own or ever wear Birkenstocks, crocs footwear or wrangler jeans. Or wear your jeans so low, that I can see the end of your briefs.
4) All your parts need to be in good working order, further testing will need to be conducted of course.
5) I can’t accept a regular drug user. Despite CA culture, I am including weed.
6) You must own at least four collared dress shirts. You need to look presentable standing next to me.
7) Your height must be proportional to your weight using the standard AMA guidelines. (fyi, I do prefer them taller than me, so you have to be at least 6 feet) .
You must have a couple photos which were taken in the last 2 months.
9) English must be your first language. However you need to have a pretty good understanding of Spanish and Latin culture, or at least a desire to learn.

If you meet all of the requirements above then you may continue, if not, then you are now dismissed but thank you for applying to be my boyfriend.

Now: give yourself two points for each of the following criteria you meet

Part B

1) You have (or are working on) a degree.
2) You own a car and have a valid driver’s license. Suspended for DUIs: minus 10 points.

3) If your car is better and newer than mine add 5 points
4) You’ve never worn Ed Hardy, Affliction or any other Christian Audigier affiliated brand.

5) If 80% of your shoes can be described as sneakers take minus 5 points.
6) You follow at least one professional sport.
7) You have skills in bed. Not because you think you do, because your past experiences have told you.
You are not a born again Christian, Jehovah’s Witness or any other kind of religious fanatic.
9) You have been to at least three countries outside of the US.
10) You don’t need to call a handy man if something breaks around the house.
11) You know how to cook a meal for two. (Eggs, instant noodles, sandwiches, lean cuisine do not count as a meal)

12) You actually do shores around the house, like doing dishes after I cooked, help cleaning the kitchen, bringing flowers, wine etc..
13) You like stepping out of your bubble and trying new things like different cuisine, bungee jumping, salsa dancing.
14) You can make it through a romantic comedy without complaining (don’t worry we don’t have to tell your friends).
15) You have a great sense of humor. Are people laughing with you, or at you?
16) You can plan a good date without any help or advice from me. “I don’t know, what do you want to do” isn’t an answer.
17) You work out and enjoy being physically active. I hit the gym regularly, you should too.
18) You have a job that requires more than a high school diploma.
19) You read books, or at least you read the newspaper, so we can talk about worldwide subjects.

(that’s kinda hot).
23) You’re competitive, and I don’t mean you like to battle it out on Wii with your buddies on the weekends.
24) You know how to dance.

25) You are spontaneous and creative.

26) You are secure about yourself and us. Meaning I’m not looking for a jealous, immature, insecure chauvinistic pig. People are going to check us out. Just enjoy the ride, at the end of the night I’m going home with you.

27) Last but not least, you can acknowledge when you screw up, and say sorry; flowers and a romantic dinner might help you get some points back.

If you scored between 20-35 pts, you can contact me, but I don’t have a lot of hope for our future relationship. If you did not score high enough, then please do not contact me, but if at some time in the future you are able to improve yourself and meet the minimum requirements, then you may re-apply.

You MUST respond with your age (this is a creeper free zone, 25-36 year olds only please) and your picture.

I thank you in advance for your application, however, only successful candidates will receive a response.

Da har jeg bestemt meg hvordan mitt eventuelle jule tre skal se ut i år, og det blir definitivt KULERE ENN DITT!

Each set comes with 7 ornaments, including 2-dimensional cutout versions of Wii, N64, Xbox 360, Dreamcast, NES, PS2 and Sega Genesis controllers. The ornaments each measure between 3 and 4 inches wide, so they’re a bit smaller than the real deals.

They’re available in 6 colors, including red, white, yellow, black, clear, and red-tinted acrylic, and can be found over at Digits’ Ponoko or Etsy shops for just $20 bucks a set.

Kult eller total nerdete det feteste som noengang har blitt laget innen julepynt? I’m in!

These are my top 5 programs that will bring out the inner geek in you and your Apple Mac.

• Geekbench
Geekbench is a benchmarking tool, as the name suggests. It’s free and can be downloaded onto most current Macs. Close all applications and it’ll measure the power. Then compete with a friend!

• Google Earth
OK – this might seem really, really obvious, but it isn’t. You see, on its own, Earth is a great tool for everyone, but under the Tools menu there is a realistic flight simulator game. It requires great skill and precision!

• Grapher
A graph drawing program simply built in to OS X. It’s under Utilities. Most people have never heard of it (but you had).

• Lockdown
A freebie (you can see where I’m going here) that locks down a Mac and whenever someone does anything to it, it sounds an alarm which is immutable, flashes the screen, emails a photo of the intruder and requires the correct paired Apple Remote to unlock. Applies to USB, keyboard, mouse, laptop power leads, FireWire, WiFi, whatever… And customisable too.

• Deeper
Use this utility to change many, many hidden settings on a Mac. You might want to modify the login screen’s information, change window minimisation behaviour, or a whole host of other things.

Enjoy! All are free – to the best of my knowledge – and all can be found on Sourceforge or via Google, if your Mac doesn’t have them already…

“Great scott!! how fast were we going? certainly 88mph!”
The Doctor åpner døra til The Tardis og ser spørrende ut mens han sier
“What?…What?….What?”

Aaaand the fun starts, make me the movie!
