I recently found myself at a newsstand, staring in disbelief at a magazine. I initially thought it was some kind of parody, but it wasn’t “The Onion,” it was “The Atlantic.” Yes, the venerable “Atlantic,” founded by such literary luminaries as Emerson, Longfellow, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. On the cover of the December 2009 issue is a photograph of a Christian cross bedecked with signs reading “Foreclosure” and “For Sale,” along with this headline: “Did Christianity Cause The Crash? How Preachers Are Spreading a Gospel of Debt.”

Yes, I did. I did do that.

For a moment I pictured myself dressed as Urkel, standing in the smoking rubble of a demolished US Treasury Building, pointing at the mess and sheepishly, nasally intoning, “Did I do that?”
In all fairness, the article does refer specifically to the chicanery of the name-it-and-claim-it prosperity frauds. I have long been disturbed by cashier-clergymen like Peter Popoff and Benny Hinn, though my objections are mainly theological in character. But to blame bad doctrine, heretical though it may be, for the global economic collapse is absurd. (Unless, of course, Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd have been ordained and are now co-hosting a new “PTL Club” television program.)

I'm so glad I'm a part of the family of Dodd.

            The article aside, however, the cover draws no distinction between health-and-wealth con men and legitimate, sincere, biblical believers. Call me paranoid, but I wonder if this isn’t an early and mild precursor to persecution.
            I use the phrase “early and mild precursor” advisedly. In Islamic regions, in parts of India, and in communist nations like China and North Korea, persecution simply comes with being a Christ-follower; here in the States, on the other hand, the church has it relatively soft and cushy right now. But could magazine covers like this one be a foretaste of the near future?
            If so, the first requirement would be a real or ginned-up crisis – the kind that inspires mob mentality and fear. After that, the scapegoating can begin in earnest. History bears this out: When Emperor Nero wanted to initiate his own campaign of anti-Christian persecution, he did it by pinning a disaster on them. In 64 A.D., a fire destroyed 10 of the 14 wards of Rome. The citizens suspected Nero was behind the fire. In his Annals of Imperial Rome (XV.44), the Roman historian Tacitus wrote an account of Nero’s response:
            “Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called ‘Christians’ by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus…Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted.”
            Nero killed two birds with one stone. He coerced confessions to dodge the blame, and he finally had a viable rationalization for persecuting Christians.
            Maybe you’re saying, “Well, O Paranoid One, this magazine cover does hit on Christianity, but other faiths take a beating in the media too.” Hm. Let’s contrast the Atlantic cover against one recent incident: The Fort Hood Massacre.
            The Culture and Media Institute is a conservative group that monitors media trends for signs of liberal bias. They recently published a study entitled, “PC News: Networks Downplay Terrorism, Muslim Connection in Ft. Hood Attack.” Some highlights:
            “85 percent of the broadcast stories didn’t mention the word ‘terror.’ ABC, CBS, and NBC evening news

ABC News reports that the gunman was not shouting "Allahu Akbar," but was, in fact, just singing "Rock the Casbah."

referenced terrorism connections to the Fort Hood attack just seven times in 48 reports.”
            Only “twenty-nine percent of evening news reports mentioned that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was a Muslim. Of those, half (7 out of 14) defended the religion or included experts to do so.”
            Remember the slaying of abortionist George Tiller? It seemed like every news outlet in America was describing it as “domestic terrorism,” and many in the media didn’t even wait for the capture of a suspect before connecting Pro-Life Christian teachings and rhetoric to the murder. So, while the cover of “The Atlantic” whispers that Christianity caused the recession, it seems the major news networks would have us believe that Islamic jihadist teachings and terrorism played no role in the Fort Hood Massacre.
            Am I paranoid? I can only paraphrase Joseph Heller or Kurt Cobain or the anonymous bumper sticker sloganeer who first observed, “I may be paranoid, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that ‘they’ aren’t out to get me.” (Insert eerie Theremin solo here!)
            So watch and pray, believers, but most of all, trust, because “God hath not given us the spirit of fear.” And we can be sure this hasn’t taken our Savior by surprise: In Matthew 10:22, Jesus said, “And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”

Nero Fiddling, Masada, and the Christian Persecutions

We continue in this chapter (Chapter 16) with a history of Christian persecutions by the empire.

Gibbon begins this section with a single page-long paragraph, a mellifluous paean of faith, proclaiming the inestimable riches and unapproachable excellence of Christianity and its author, Jesus. This marks the beginning of a wild see-sawing of arguments – first, a few paragraphs of righteously triumphant absolute blinkered orthodoxy, followed by page after page of cutting sarcasm regarding Christianity and the early church.

It makes for somewhat schizophrenic reading.

And oftentimes the doctrine-followed-by-skepticism schtik seems contrived to me – patently a sop offered to conservative churchgoers to soften the blow of devastating attacks to follow. This pattern happens more than once in this chapter.

Also there’s a little anti-Catholic (anti-Pope), and anti-semitism rearing their ugly heads in this section (and previous ones) – just instances of late 18th century English cultural values of the upper class showing up as expected.

The Story
Why were the Christians Hated?

Gibbon starts with a very eloquent exercise in praise of the excellence of Jesus and Christianity in general

He makes the point that the empire was built on paranoia: that all emperors from the very beginning have been very suspicious of voluntary associations, or secret societies of citizens, and that Christianity at times looked very much like a terrorist/political group to the empire

Christians also liked to point out (making it worse for themselves) that Christians acknowledged/served a much higher authority than a Roman magistrate (or emperor)

Christians also liked to warn of the impending end of the world, and all the horrible catastrophes of the Apocalypse to come – not exactly the most patriotic talk

It was also common knowledge that Christians ate babies, had midnight incestuous orgies, held secret meetings which included the drinking of blood, were insufferably proud, stubborn, and usually lower-class, and were the most wicked, depraved of human kind

Christians protested that their morals, laws, and books prohibited anything even approaching such inhuman conduct, but often hinted darkly that maybe Gnostics, or a heretical sect of Christianity might be doing some of those things (another case of making things worse for themselves)

Gibbon notes that a pagan judge would hardly be able to distinguish between two people/Christians arguing about the nature of the trinity and accusing the other of heresy and horrible crimes – so the vicious rumors would have seemed to have had some independent verification

History of the Persecutions

Gibbon notes that the Roman empire had hardly any martyrs, or extensive periods of violent persecution in any form similar to that of Europe in the last 3 centuries (1500’s-1700’s) – Christians are far more violent and bloodthirsty towards each other than the pagan empire ever was towards the Christians

Gibbons themes on Persecutions

He notes 4 points about the persecutions (which go against popular historical conceptions)

1. It was almost 2 centuries before they started (took a long time to start)

2. Romans proceeded with caution and reluctance whenever they did prosecute Christians

3. Romans were moderate in their punishments (notwithstanding the fantastic embellishments of monks writing martyr’s histories in centuries to come)

4. The periods of persecution were very short, and were interspersed with very long periods of peace

The History of the Persecutions

At first Christians were disregarded as a minor sect of the Jews

First recorded persecution is Nero (Nero blamed the great fire in Rome on the Christians and tortured and killed them after the fire was controlled as punishment)

Nero 'fiddles' while Rome burns - then persecutes the Christians - Gibbon senses something false in the whole story - the fiddling makes no sense, and the Christian persecution seems bizarre

The First Persecution
Nero Fiddling While Rome Burned – and then Crucifying the Christians
Gibbon rejects out of hand the idea of the fiddling, then goes on to confirm that both Tacitus and Seutonius record the persecutions as historical fact. Gibbon goes on to question the specific details Tacitus relates (he had to be writing all this 3 or 4 decades later, after the fact). Then he wonders why the Jewish population, rather than the “obscure and innocent” Christians were not implicated. There are strains of anti-semitism here and there in his text – here he speculates that perhaps the Jews were implicated, and that Poppaea (Nero’s mistress – and possibly a Hebrew (per the ancient Jewish historian Josephus) might have used her influence to push suspicion away from the Jews and implicate the GALILEANS (capitals are Gibbon’s). The same name could either have meant the radical, anti-Roman political jewish group headed by Judas in Palestine, or the very small group of Christians in Rome.

A very roundabout way to say the Jews (once again) betrayed the Christians. A strange, and unlikely speculation about why Christians were Nero’s scapegoats.

Masada, the Jewish stronghold taken by the Romans in the 70's (under Claudius) - the men killed their wives and children first then took their own lives just before the Romans breached the wall. That ramp/road you see in the picture is the ACTUAL SIEGE RAMP built by the Romans to take the fortress almost 2000 years ago

Interestingly, Gibbon also describes in a footnote (DEF, v.1, ch.16, fn.42) Judas’ grandson Eleazar defending a mountaintop against Roman siege (during Claudius reign a few decades later) and dying to a man, after first killing their wives and sons and daughters. Odd to hear of Masada, being referenced as an unknown, strange historical interlude in a text from the later 1770’s

It is this common belief in One God who created everything that has bound the varying races together into a perfectly woven nation called Israel. It was the only nation on earth where strangers (foreigners) could become full fledged family members without ever being ostracized or reminded that they weren’t really blood brothers. For no one was a blood brother! That was the point! Their blood tie was their common ancestry in Adam and Eve, and not the nation of their fathers.

Only one other nation on earth has taken the identical view toward his fellow man. No matter what nation a person is born into, the United States of America adopted them, and they became full fledged citizens with all the rights of a home born son!

It is interesting to note the United States was founded during the days of the Spanish Inquisition of Rome. The witch-hunts were conducted by the same people who protested a century before against the lies being taught by the Roman Church in Europe. America began with the very same principles as Israel.

While other nations will let you come and join them, you will always be a foreigner amongst their ranks; and when the economy begins to slip, they will always blame you for it. Although the United States was founded upon the same God of Israel, and the same principles of Israel, and the same Bible as Israel, it is beginning to show the earmarks similar to other heathen nations.

When this type of thinking emerges, let the Jews beware! Most Jews who read this will be thinking, Not in America; I’m American! Well the German Jews of the 1930’s had the same flaw in their reasoning. It was their land. They were German citizens. Their families had lived in Germany for centuries. They had just as much right to be there as anyone else. I’ve heard every type of argument; but that didn’t stop Hitler’s ovens from consuming them.

Remember Abraham? He had the sense to listen to God. He believed what God told him. He had the brains to get out of Babylon when the message came, before it was too late. Even Jesus warned the Jews to get out of town when you see hatred on the rise (see Matthew Chapter 24).

Today’s Israel is seeded with Jews who couldn’t believe what I am telling you, until the citizens in their own countries turned against them. This is similar to the days of Emperor Nero when he burned Rome to blame the Jews.

The Jews couldn’t understand it. Their families had lived in those nations for centuries. Yet, the Jews are always considered foreigners when trouble begins. Scapegoats, because their belief in God differs from the other citizens of the land.

It is this difference that forged the new branch of the human tree known as the Jews; and it is this difference that continually causes the other branches of the human race, amongst whom Jews live, to vomit them out!

The first signal is poverty on the rise and a collapsing economy. The last sign is the winds of war blowing on the horizon; when people begin to discuss the possibility of war. This process is similar to the first heart transplants. The operations were successful. Everything functioned perfectly; but the body rejected the foreign part, and the patient died!

Continuo a sentire in lontananza rumore di spari, ma non sono preoccupato. Qui ci sono cancelli e alte mura. Il vecchietto che mi cucina sembra non preoccuparsene neanche. Ha gli occhi cerulei e la pelle scura. Cammina lento, a piccole passettini. Eppure è ancora forte. Stamattina l’ho visto sollevare con agilità un sacco di patate da almeno 30 chili. Fuori dal cancello sembra tutto spento. Le strade, piene di tuc-tuc di giorno e di venditori ambulanti instancabili, sono ora silenziose e leggere. Dalla veranda si sentono le zampe dei cani randagi che cercano gli avanzi della giornata. Sembra impossibile che a pochi chilometri si spari e si ammazzi. Questa guerra a macchia di leopardo ti sorprende sempre. Ieri credevamo che gli sfollati sarebbero arrivati da Nord, mentre oggi si sono presentati dalla opposta. Tiri sù tende e le rismonti per rimetterle sù. Scavi pozzi, distribuisci lanterne a gas, sapone, secchi di plastica. Dopo i primi tempi non distingui più le facce. Diventano una massa unica che continua a moltiplicarsi all’infinito. Sembra di distribuire sempre le stesse scatole di cartone agli stessi disperati. Cambia la scenografia e il tempo in questo nostro piccolo circo che mettiamo su ogni mattina. Non so mai cosa rispondere a chi mi chiede: e ora cosa ci succede? Quando finirà? Chi ci darà da mangiare? Non lo sai, non sai niente, mai. Un po’ perché non devi sapere; un po’ perché il Governo non vuole che tu sappia. Distribuisci sapone, lanterne e secchi e il tuo mondo finisce lì. Per ogni blocco di sapone che dai via sono almeno 4 o 5 casi di dissenteria evitati. Per ogni lanterna a gas, 30, 40 pasti caldi che si cucinano. Ogni secchio porterà acqua ad una famiglia per sei mesi. Basta, non ti chiedi altro, non pensi altro. Come un monaco buddista guardi al tuo piccolo pezzo di montagna e cammini un passo alla volta verso la cima. Non ti guardi indietro né di lato, solo davanti. E mai in alto.

Fa caldo stasera. Sento sbattere sulla zanzariera le furiose mosche che mi annusano e non possono entrare. Decido di farmi una doccia calda e sciogliere anche questa giornata insieme allo sporco. Il piccolo bagno ha le stesse mattonelle che aveva in cucina mia nonna, forse 15 anni fa. Marrone chiaro con una povera felce disegnata al centro. Mi svesto della maglietta celeste e dei pantaloni lunghi color khaki e, guardandoli appoggiati alla finestra aperta, mi sento uno stereotipo che cammina. Mi mancano gli occhiali da sole e il cappellino e potrei essere uscito da una brochure per le adozioni a distanza. Entro e l’acqua spegne i pensieri. Mi scorre addosso senza domande o pretese. Non vuole nulla da me. Vuole solo correre via, giù nei tubi, verso il proprio fiume, verso il mare per poi ricominciare da capo sulle nuvole. A occhi chiusi sento una scarica di kalashnikov appena fuori dalla finestra, oltre il muro di cinta. Mi guardo, insaponato, nudo, dentro un box doccia di vetro. Respiro rapido, uscire e buttarsi a terra, restare immobili, urlare, tutte sembrano opzioni un po’ ridicole. Nel frattempo qualcuno fuori corre via, urlando frasi incomprensibili ai compagni o agli avversari e torna il silenzio. Chiudo gli occhi di nuovo e tremo un po’, cercando con le mani lo shampoo che è caduto dal portasapone lasciando uno sbafo blu sul vetro, come un arco o, penso indifferente, come uno sbuffo di sangue.

As the economy rolls along like a marble on a pebble beach and the stock market continues its own bumpy road to recovery, apocalyptic thought is again on the rise. It is when times are bad that apocalyptic comes in most useful. Individuals who feel that this world has run out of possibilities generally look to a new future world where things will be radically different. That’s why people flock to movies like 2012 and dream of a new day, a new era.

That’s the way it has always been. Jews being tortured to death under Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Seleucid tyrant, looked for that day when Michael would take on the “Prince of Persia” and the new world would gush in and overtake this one. Almost two centuries later the early Christian movement, suffering at the hands of Roman emperors such as Nero and Diocletian, reveled in the visions of Revelation — the new world coming. Rental property is free in the New Jerusalem! The earliest exemplars of apocalyptic thinking appear to go back to the ancient Zoroastrians. This early Iranian religion (which may have originated in Afghanistan) took comfort in a dualistic world where good and evil constantly struggled until a cosmic conflict would result in the ultimate destruction of evil. It helped to explain why things could be so bad for good people in the here-and-now.

2012, however, derives from concerns that the Mayan calendar seems to have run out of space at that time slot just over three years from now. Otherwise intelligent people panic; this is an apocalypse of the secular kind! Experts on the Maya (among which I am not) explain that the Mayans use(d) many calendars (there are still Mayans around). Their large-scale, 5000 year calendar may run out on December 21, 2012, but that doesn’t mean the end of the world. In fact, that calendar only began on August 11, 3114 BCE, about 4.5 billion years after the creation of the earth. It was not meant as a road-map to the cosmos. The real apocalypse is in the minds of those suffering from their own private ills in this world. Ever since Zarathustra spoke, people have had an alternative, better future to anticipate.

Tutto è ancora calmo e silenzioso, tutti vogliono ancora riposare. I vetri lentamente iniziano ad appannarsi e qualche passeggero già sonnecchia.
Una ragazza (o forse dovrei dire donna) sulla trentina siede poco avanti a me, nella fila di fianco. E’ vestita bene, di nero e grigio. Ha un volto ancora giovane e un piercing minuscolo sul naso.
La osservo mentre gli archi di All is full of love si mescolano nell’aria.
Uno strano ombrello, in quello che sembra essere ferro battuto, con una stoffa argentata che si chiude in un vaporoso fiore, penzola di fianco a lei.
Ogni suo oggetto o atteggiamento la rende più bella di quanto realmente non sia.
I suoi capelli a caschetto neri, il viso piccolo e appuntito, mi ricordano mia cugina. Mi ricorda qualcosa che vedevo da piccolo, un’idea che mi ero fatto dell’”essere grandi”, una vita che vedevo nei telefilm che guardavano gli adolescenti del tempo, tra Friends e Daria.
Prende un piccolo specchietto grigio e inizia a mettersi un rossetto scuro -che sembra essere di muji, in una scatola trasparente- con dei piccoli colpetti sulle labbra, frettolosamente.
Mi da l’idea di una che appena arrivata a Milano correrà in ufficio, tra fax e e-mail.
I piccoli carillon e cristalli della canzone accompagnano i suoi gesti, e io continuo a guardarla sorridendo.
Forse perchè vorrei essere lei, forse perchè osservarla mi rende sereno.
Prende la sua borsa e ne tira fuori una coppola in lana grigia, che immagino essere morbidissima. Poi un Ipod nero e si mette ad ascoltare la radio, mentre io sento e mi ripeto “all is full of love”.
Tutto è così bello e calmo, e nessuno sembra accorgersene.
Forse dovrebbero solo imparare a guardare i colori e sorridere.
Forse è che spero sempre, in tutto.
E nonostante molte cose siano irrealizzabili, esse mi rendono felice.
