You Dell (s dell) Mini 10v netbook owners who can’t wait to try the early builds of Google (s goog) Chrome OS on your system don’t have to wait any longer. You don’t even have to run it in a virtual machine like Kevin did, because Dell has you covered. Some folks at Dell spent some time with Chrome and got it running on a Mini 10v. They got the drivers working properly, although Wi-Fi is a bit flaky, and put it all together in a neat package for owners to download. Note that the download is a whopping 8 GB, and you should follow the instructions to get it working properly.

It’s nice to see Dell jump on Chrome OS so quickly. It bodes well that Dell might be officially supporting Chrome in the future.

Netbooks, low-cost portable computers optimized for web usage, are continuing to sell at a torrid pace, with Acer expecting 50 percent growth in the global netbook market in 2010, to 42 million units. In the meantime, standard technologies, operating systems and other options in these diminutive systems are undergoing rapid shifts. Here are eight up-to-date tips to keep in mind if you’re in the market for a new netbook.

Don’t Settle for a Tiny Display. As Om has pointed out, netbook specifications continue to encroach on standard laptop specs, to the point that the real differences between them are blurring. And as The Register and market researchers at Canalys report, in 2010, many netbook manufacturers will be emphasizing systems with 12-inch displays, to possibly broadly replace those with screens of just 10 inches. You can already find systems with larger displays, and indeed, you’ll likely have a better experience with them.

Don’t Go for a Tiny Keyboard. Many netbooks come with chiclet-style keyboards that can make typing difficult, but this is rapidly changing. As PCMag.com notes, many new netbooks, such as the Toshiba mini NB205, come with full-size keyboards. I’m also a fan of the keyboards on the Acer Aspire One and Dell Mini 10v systems. Get a keyboard that won’t cramp your style — that’s where the market is headed.

Consider the OS Up Front. Linux-based netbooks continue to offer low price points and often come with good open source applications. Next year, Google (s goog) will attempt to redefine the netbook with its Linux-based Chrome OS, focused on cloud applications. In the meantime, Microsoft’s (s MSFT) new Windows 7 operating system is squarely aimed at the netbook market, and netbook manufacturers are reporting that it’s ushering in strong sales. As always, consider what types of applications you’ll use as you weigh various operating systems.

Free Apps Can Improve Your Experience. When evaluating a netbook’s platform and what you’ll do with it, don’t forget that there are many free and open source utilities and applications that make navigating, handling hardware resources and other tasks easier. You can find 10 good ideas here.

Complement Low Local Storage With a USB Drive. Netbooks typically make many compromises in terms of local resources when compared to larger laptops, with storage among the most common. You can complement low local storage with an inexpensive, external USB Flash drive, however. There are also useful web sites, especially PortableApps, that you can use to stock up your Flash drive with useful, free applications.

Check the Battery Life. Many netbooks offer outstanding battery life — in some cases, all-day power — but not all of them. Make sure to check reviews of the netbook you’re considering for battery life tests. And once you’ve become a netbook owner, remember to follow best practices — especially turning the brightness down — in order to maximize its battery life.

Take a Hands-On Test Drive. While there are many good deals online for netbooks, if possible, I recommend going to a retail outlet to do a hands-on test drive. Because netbooks are practically defined by the compromises they make, this can help you identify any problems that you might find intolerable over time.

Pointing Devices Matter. Speaking of personal preferences, people always vary widely in terms of the pointing devices they favor. For example, I’ve tried many netbooks that I would never buy simply because the highly sensitive trackpads on them bother me. This is another reason why a hands-on test drive makes a lot of sense.

Via Golem. Thx!

2 – Procure utilizar conectores soldados. Quanto maior o cabo, maior a perda.

A resposta é sim.

Smartbooks are an emerging class of computing devices that, basically, are to netbooks what netbooks

Smartbooks are an emerging class of computing devices that, basically, are to netbooks what netbooks are to notebooks: smaller, cheaper, less powerful, and (possibly) handier. They’re an idea being promoted by chipmakers Qualcomm and Freescale, whose CPUs will be inside the machines (which won’t run Windows).

Trouble is, there’s already a smartbook. It’s a German company, and as TechCrunch’s Robin Wauters is reporting, it’s decided to protect its trademark by going after use of the term to describe these mini-netbooks.

The whole situation is reminiscent of Psion’s period of trying to stomp out use of “netbook” (which was soon resolved). This time, though, I’d shed no tears if the chip companies and others behind the new gadgets were forced to to find a new name for their platform. Unless you want to argue that smartbooks are, indeed, the smartest computing device to date, the term isn’t descriptive. Unlike “desktop” or “notebook” it’s just marketingspeak. Even “smartphone” is clearer, since smartphones are indeed smarter than mere phones.

The category is tough to describe in a clear way: Intel’s similar MID (Mobile Internet Device) concept isn’t very helpful or alluring. But here are few stabs at new terminology, just in case we need it:

Netnetbook

Netbookerino

Tinybook

Smallishbook

Leanbook

Kneetop

Netpaperback

Any other candidates?

The real question about smartbooks, of course, is whether the world needs ‘em. I’m looking forward to seeing some examples in person in January at the Consumer Electronics Show. Historically, the track record of devices too big to fit in a pocket and too limited to serve as full-blown computers has been crummy. (Sorry, UMPCs.) But with the rise of smartphones and the decline of operating systems as the defining factor that determines what you can do with a computer, smartbooks aren’t an inherently nutty idea.

The X120 is your basic Intel Atom (s intc) powered netbook with a 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM and Microsoft Windows XP (s msft). LG expects the six-cell battery to last for seven hours. Along with Wi-Fi, the 2.8 pound X120 includes an HSPA radio tuned to AT&T’s (s t) 3G frequencies, making it a perfect candidate for a data plan. That’s exactly what you’ll need, too — a $60 monthly data plan — to grab the X120 for $179.99 at your local Radio Shack.

LG also integrated Splashtop’s instant on solution for quick access to key applications an a connected browser. A dedicated “SmartOn” button boots the netbook into a basic Linux partition, making you productive in five seconds. When I last chatted with the DeviceVM folks — creators of Splashtop – nearly a year ago, they were still working on getting their product to work with 3G connections like the one included with the X120. I expect they have that ironed out now, but I’ll ping them directly to verify. As nice as a five-second boot time is, I’d want to use the browser wherever I am.

In its heyday, DELL, as now, assembled and sold desktops and laptops, primarily to business and gove

In its heyday, DELL, as now, assembled and sold desktops and laptops, primarily to business and government but also to consumers. The desktops were utilitarian, the laptops not particularly stylish and a bit heavier than others. But all DELL’s products were serviceable and they were cheap.

DELL’s advantages…

DELL had several advantages over its competition:

1. it dealt directly with the end consumer, assembling machines to order. So it had virtually no finished goods inventory

2. component manufacturers suffered from chronic overcapacity. So their prices were generally falling. DELL took delivery of parts on the day a machine was assembled and sold, rather than having a finished machine sitting on a shelf for three months before purchase. This gave the company a several percentage point cost of goods advantage over rivals.

3. competitors were weak. IBM wasn’t sending its best and brightest to make PCs. A Jobs-less AAPL was drifting. Compaq was very inefficient, as was HP. HP then compounded its problems by hiring Carly Fiorina–a marketer with little manufacturing experience–and acquiring Compaq.

4. DELL uses a negative working capital business model. That is, customers pay for their DELL computers at present on average 36 days earlier than DELL pays its suppliers and workers for making the machines. Also, DELL receives payment for warranty or other service contracts in advance. When short-term interest rates were higher than now, DELL could earn hundreds of millions of dollars in interest income on these “floating” balances.

..where did they all go?

What happened is this:

1. component making became more sophisticated and expensive. Suppliers consolidated or dropped out of the business. Chronic overcapacity abated. We now appear to be entering, if anything, a period of component shortage.

2. IBM sold its PC-making business to Lenovo. Jobs returned to AAPL. Fiorina was shown the door at HPQ, which promptly hired a veteran manufacturing manager, Mark Hurd, from NCR. Acer and ASUS emerged as global players in the PC market with low-cost netbooks.

3. Consumer tastes shifted from heavy and clunky to smartphones, netboooks and sleeker Macs. DELL didn’t adjust, although it’s trying to do so now.

4. Vista arrived, causing consumer disenchantment with MSFT-driven computers and encouraging businesses to stay with Windows XP.

5. The Great Recession developed. Not only did this reduce demand, but it lowered short-term interest rates to almost nothing, all but erasing DELL’s once significant interest income.

Not all the issues were external, however.

6. DELL’s quality control and customer service, at least in its consumer business, slipped badly.

Where to from here?

Michael Dell, the company founder, returned to the helm to right a troubled ship in early 2007.

His initial goals were to reduce manufacturing costs and increase production efficiency, in order to raise margins and reverse a sharp slippage in the effectiveness of the company’s negative working capital model.

DELL has also been trying to rationalize product lines (fewer models) and simplify product design. To this end, it is increasingly turning away from its own manufacturing plants and using contract manufacturers.

I’ve read that Mr. Dell also at least initially wanted to expand the company’s consumer device offerings. But I can see no specific evidence of this desire in company documents on the website. And in any event, it seems to me that this market–which is now iPhone, iTouch, Blackberry, Android, netbook–has pretty much run away from DELL.

(By the way, I’ve found the company website much more open and accessible than it was a few years ago, when it was impossible, even as a professional investor, to arrange to get on the company’s email alert list. The new reporting format this year is also a big step up in delivering relevant investor data.)

International expansion is another theme.

So to is creation of a much larger service business, so that DELL can have more recurring revenue and be less dependent on the PC replacement cycle with large enterprises and government entities. Hence, the $4 billion (cash) Perot Systems acquisition, which has just closed.

A tough row to hoe

To sum up: DELL appears to have decided to start down the same path that IBM began to tread in the late Nineties and onto which HPQ turned two years or so ago. This seems to be the natural evolution of the IT business–from hardware to software and services. Two big issues for DELL: it’s a little late to the game, and the competition is not only ahead of it in this move, but also much less concentrated than DELL is on enterprise and government PCs and servers (about 80% of the company’s business).

Progress so far is hard to assess

This is partly due to the recession itself, partly to DELL having to try to restructure the corporate house during an economic tornado. I’m not sure how the reorganization is faring, but then I’m not an expert on DELL. But I didn’t get the sense from listening to last week’s conference call that professional Wall Street tech analysts have a much better idea than I do. So maybe lack of communication from DELL also plays a part.

Do we as investors need to know?…probably not.

In a case like this, the relevant investment question is: do I need to know this information, or can I make a decision about the stock without it? Here, my guess is it’s unlikely that we’ll get strong earnings acceleration from ongoing cost-cutting. If anything, we may get further unusual losses. So restructuring is probably a neutral or a mild negative.

Things probably can’t get any worse in the consumer business, since results are close to zero now and DELL seems determined to protect margins at the expense of incremental sales. Public will go its own counter-cyclical way. Half of small and medium business customers have already upgraded to Windows 7.

Therefore, the next big potential lift to earnings, I think, will come as and when enterprise customers start to buy new PCs again. This is unlikely to happen before yearend–and possibly not before the middle of next year. So my conclusion on DELL is the best course of action is to watch and wait.

One more post

I have one more post to do on DELL–an analysis of its negative working capital situation and what constraints it potentially places on the company. It will be out in the next day or two.

I’ve completed a blog entry for every single day of this trip (over 100 now, crikey) before arriving here at Chez Haslam in St Jean d’Angely and my mild OCD/OPCD won’t let break that pattern when I’ve only a few more to go. The problem is I’m not really traveling per se, I’m just dropping in at my friend’s gaff to catch up and relax, that’s a bit of a problem for a travel diary.

So the entries until I depart for Paris on Saturday may (will) be somewhat more banal and mundane than usual, the silver lining they will also be much shorter.

When I get over to New Zealand (and beyond) there will be a much larger gap between posts (1 or 2 a week maybe) when stationed in one place and then when I’m on the move I”ll revert to the one a day plan that has served me since the beginning of April.

Today I’ve printed off my NZ visa, researched netbooks (this is looking likely), ate homemade chocolate and beetroot cake for lunch and homemade meatballs with spaghetti for tea, drank a little wine and beer and watched ‘Come Dine With Me’ on the Channel 4 on demand web channel. It’s been all go really.

The photo is from somewhere between Madrid and Bilbao. Stop by this time tomorrow folks for another exciting entry of STBB.

Mein Kommentar dazu
