Times Mac

4. Times (30$) Wer es den “Mac way” haben will, allerdings mit 30$ auch der teuerste.

Moja przesiadka na 10.6 spowodowała m.in. zmianę używanego czytnika RSS.

I had a very vague idea of what are feeds, but I had never used any. This is my first attemps at understanding the funda of Feeds.

You see that two small orange icons in top right corner of my blog. Those are Feeds .. RSS to be precise. RSS stands for (Rich Site Summary).

Oky So what is an RSS Feed?

I see “RSS”, “XML”, and “Atom” out there, but I don’t know how I might use these links when I find them.

Technically — > RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

Non Technically —-> Feeds are a way for websites large and small to distribute their content well beyond just visitors using browsers. Feeds permitsubscription to regular updates, delivered automatically via a web portal, news reader, or in some cases good old email. Feeds also make it possible for site content to be packaged into “widgets,” “gadgets,” mobile devices, and other bite-sized technologies that make it possible to display blogs, podcasts, and major news/sports/weather/whatever headlines just about anywhere.

Links labeled “XML” or “RSS” or “Atom” are ways of saying that you can find out about updates to that site without having to visit the site in your web browser. These icons represent content in any format – text, audio or video – to which you can subscribe and read/watch/listen using a feed reader.

This feature is referred to as “syndication” or “aggregation”. Sometimes it’s just called subscribing. And these days, instead of one of these words, lots of sites will use a little orange button. The standard one looks like this: It’s also common to see buttons that say “RSS” or “XML”, which looks like this:

Who Publishes Feeds?

Anyone that publishes on the web can publish a feed. Blogs (or weblogs) were one of the first types of sites to offer feeds, Besides this Most of the biggest names on the web offer content feeds including major newspapers and news websites like USATODAY.com, BBC News Headlines, ABCNews, hobbyist sites, and even stores like CNET, Yahoo!,Amazon.com (including a podcast!).

How do I read feeds?

Just like when you want to watch a video clip or listen to music on the web, you need a “player” of some kind to subscribe to feeds. Good news: Most of these tools are free, and there are many to choose from, so you can find the one that best suits you.

The “player” for a feed is called a feed reader. This tool lets you subscribe to any feeds you want, checks automatically to see when they’re updated, and then displays the updates for you as they arrive.

Feed readers can run on your computer or you can sign up to use a feed-reader that runs on the web. If you use one of the web-based readers, you can access your feeds from anywhere you go, just by signing into the website that manages your feeds. If you use a feed reading program that installs on your computer, your feeds can be stored for you even if you’re not connected to the Internet.

A typical interface for a feed reader will display your feeds and the number of new (unread) entries within each of those feeds. You can also organize your feeds into categories and even clip and save your favorite entries (with certain applications).

What Feed Reader Should I Use?

Here’s a list some of the most popular tools

On the web: If you don’t want to have to install a program, many people choose My Yahoo!, Google Personalized Homepage, My MSN, or My AOL to read feeds right within the home page that their browser starts in. Other providers of web-based feed readers include Rojo. Bloglines, Attensa Online, or NewsGator Online. All of the web-based services are free.

On your computer: If you want a feed reading program that runs on your own computer, there are a few options. Anyone using the Mozilla Firefoxweb browser has support for feeds built-in, and Microsoft Windows users have support for feeds in Internet Explorer 7. Apple Macintosh users can also use the built-in support for feeds in the Safari web browser.

If you want a separate program to read feeds a variety of RSS Readers are available for different platforms. Some popular feed readers include Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac), FeedReader (Windows), and NewsGator (Windows – integrates with Outlook). If you’re on a Macintosh running OS X, the most popular feed reader is NetNewsWire, which can also connect to the web-based services.

Subscribing to Feeds

Once you’ve got a tool to read feeds, you’ll want to find some feeds worth reading. Many of the tools listed above provide some built-in feeds to get you started. Then, as you visit other sites on the web, you can keep your eyes open for links that say XML or RSS or Syndication, or for that orange button up above, and add the feeds you find interesting.

Publishing a Feed

If you’re taken by the convenience and power of being able to deliver information regularly right to the screens of anyone who’s interested, you might want to publish your own feed. The good news is, it’s surprisingly easy.

If you have a website, blog, audio/video content, or even photos, you can offer a feed of your content as an option. If you are using a popular blogging platform or publishing tool like TypePad, WordPress, or Blogger, you likely publish a feed automatically. Even other non-blogging sites like social photo-sharing service Flickr offer feeds of content you produce that others can retrieve. There are also tools on the market that can help transform traditional web content into the right format for distribution.

Why is This a Good Thing?

Technology evolution in online publishing has made it really easy to not only publish regular updates to web-based content, but also keep track of a large number of your favorite websites or blogs, without having to remember to check each site manually or clutter your email inbox. You can now streamline your online experience by subscribing to specific content feeds and aggregating this information in one place to be read when you’re ready.

Consumer Bottom Line: Subscribing to feeds makes it possible to review a large amount of online content in a very short time.

Publisher Bottom Line: Feeds permit instant distribution of content and the ability to make it “subscribable.”

Advertiser Bottom Line: Advertising in feeds overcomes many of the shortcomings that traditional marketing channels encounter including spam filters, delayed distribution, search engine rankings, and general inbox noise.

The reason as to why you would want to use a standalone application is that it can be used offline and provides features that can’t be done in a web browser. This pretty much completes NewsGator plans to settle down with Google Reader as the synchronisation location, rather than Newsgator Online.

As a Mac, user however, NNW 3.2 came as a big disappointment. Especially when you look at what NewsGator has been able to achieve with FeedDemon. I have been following the NNW updates religiously, since NNW decided to move to Google Reader.

During this period of instability, I also moved to Gruml, which shows great promise to be a very good offline client for Google Reader, for Mac users. It, obviously has a long way to go.

Article Actions, Gruml

I am very surprised by the lack of Google Reader features that are missing in NNW. Especially so, since the same company decided to make these available in their Windows equivalent. I am especially referring to sharing, liking, and sharing with notes and Twitter integration (Limited to sending articles to Twitterrific and I don’t use Twitterrific). Also, I cannot read items shared by others on NNW.

Article Actions, NetNewsWire

RSS Readers have a huge possibility, but a few seem to willing to exploit it and include features that makes the RSS experience valuable.

For now, it seems, I am switching between to Gruml and Google Reader for my feeds.

NewsGator released todayNetNewsWire 3.2 for OS X. At the end of July, NewsGator announced the ending

NewsGator released todayNetNewsWire 3.2 for OS X. At the end of July, NewsGator announced the ending of its news feed subscription service and released a beta version of NetNewsWire 3.2 with Google Reader synchronization.

The way NewsGator handled the ending of its service and migration to Google Reader left a lot to be desired. After sending out an email advising people to immediately switch to the beta, it received many complaints due to the numerous bugs and the large embedded ad in the bottom left of the window.

The ad was removed for remaining betas — until today, when it was brought back at half the previous size. To remove the ad you must purchase a license for $10. I’m not sure if this is a special introductory price or not, but for me $10 is a great deal and buying a license was a no-brainer.

As well as many bug fixes and speed optimizations, the official release restores the much-loved Clippings functionality that was missing from the initial beta. On the OS X platform there are now a few options brewing for native Google Reader support, providing healthy competition in this area, from which we all benefit.

Also released today was the long-awaited NetNewsWire 2.0 for iPhoneOS. In a similar manner to its desktop brother, there are now two versions of NetNewsWire for the handheld devices. The free version (iTunes link) remains available with full functionality but now contains ads. To remove the ads, NetNewsWire Premium (iTunes link) can be purchased. This premium version is available for an introductory price of $1.99 until October, at which point it will go up to $4.99.

As well as the obvious synchronization with Google Reader, version 2 contains Twitter and Instapaper integration. This is a complete rewrite of the application; it contains a new UI and is much faster than version 1.0. It does require iPhone OS 3.0, but I wonder who’s still on 2.2 these days? The ability to forward an article by email without leaving the app is great and I wish all apps would be updated to do that (I’m looking at you, Byline).

The biggest missing feature, which is a deal-breaker for me, is being able to set an article’s status as unread. In the FAQ, they recommend using the ’star’ function to flag the article instead of a ‘mark as unread’ function, but that doesn’t suit my workflow. While I’m impressed with the improvements, until I can set articles back to unread I need to stick with Byline for my Google Reader syncing. I think Byline is still faster, too. But as I said before, competition is a good thing.

Although much has been said about the death of RSS I, for one, still get most of my news via RSS fee

Although much has been said about the death of RSS I, for one, still get most of my news via RSS feeds every day. I find Twitter to be filled with too much extraneous junk, and services like Friendfeed and Facebook still don’t offer the feature set I want from my daily news aggregator. My RSS service of choice is Google Reader (s goog), which should come as no surprise as it is by far the most popular RSS Reader out there.

Getting your Google Reader fix is as simple as navigating to the website, but what I really want is a desktop solution that offers all of Google Reader’s features while giving me a Mac-like (s aapl) experience and offline access to downloaded articles. A year ago the choices in this space were almost nil, but thankfully we’ve seen several applications jump into the fray recently. Let’s take a look at each of the contenders.

NetNewsWire

Many Mac users will be familiar with NetNewsWire, which has long been one of the best RSS readers for the platform. I was thus thrilled to hear that the next version of NetNewsWire will be bringing Google Reader support.

NetNewsWire's interface should be familiar to many Mac users.

The current beta of NetNewsWire does support synchronization, starring and folders, but features such as sharing and liking items are still not available. Thankfully the developer has indicated that those features will be implemented. Unfortunately, there’s no word about future support for notes and tagging.

NetNewsWire offers excellent keyboard support, a built-in web browser as well as integration with Delicious and Instapaper. Lacking is Twitter or Facebook support. You can send articles directly to a blogging client on your computer, which is a nice feature. I also like the three pane interface that is offered as an alternative to the more traditional interface with articles on top and the preview below.

NetNewsWire also offers a 3-column view and a tabbed browser

Once the latest version of NetNewsWire gets out of beta, the combination of excellent user interface with reasonable Google Reader support will likely be compelling for many. It will still be missing some important features however, like notes, tagging or posting directly to Twitter and Facebook. This will likely keep me from using the software.

EventBox

Unlike other solutions on this list, EventBox is not singularly focused on RSS feeds. Instead it seeks to be the center of your online social life, with support for Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Digg and other services in addition to Google Reader support.

The user interface offers access to your folders and feeds, but given the multi-use nature of the software I have to say that it feels a bit like Google Reader has been shoehorned into a generic interface. There are no keyboard shortcuts for sharing and starring, for example, and no support for tagging or liking.

Google Reader shares the spotlight with other services in EventBox.

Given EventBox’s support for a wide variety of social networks, you might expect sharing items from Google Reader to those various networks would be easy. Unfortunately this isn’t the case. You can send an item to Twitter or Instapaper, but not directly to any of the other social networks that EventBox supports.

EventBox is still undergoing active development and the developer says they are specifically working on improving integration between services. Still, improving the Google Reader implementation doesn’t seem to be high on the priority list. Hopefully this changes in the future, but as of now it’s not a good choice for most Google Reader users.

Gruml

I have used both NetNewsWire and EventBox extensively in the past, but I have to admit that Gruml is new to me. To be fair, it’s new to many of us as the application just opened to a public beta a few weeks ago.

At first glance Gruml is a Google Reader power user’s dream. It has by far the most complete implementation of features amongst the three applications I looked at, including support for starring, sharing, liking, notes and tags. There’s also support for posting an article directly to Twitter.

Gruml packs in the features, but constant lag is a problem.

The user interface is similar to NetNewsWire’s, with the option of a standard mail-like interface or a three-column view. Like NetNewsWire, there is also a built-in web browser for viewing articles and solid keyboard navigation support. Unique to Gruml is a menu bar icon that shows you how many unread items you have and pops up a list of the most recent articles when you click on it.

Gruml also offers the most complete access to Google Reader interface features, for example you can view your starred, shared, liked and noted items. You may also view a list of all your feeds, see them organized by folder or view articles by tag.

Unfortunately not all is well with Gruml, as you might expect from an application that is still in Beta. The biggest problem is laggy performance. While using the application I experienced constant slowdowns. Even moving to a new article would sometimes summon a beach ball, as did attempting to mark all articles in a folder as read.

If the developers of Gruml can address these performance issues, however, it currently offers the greatest hope for a complete Google Reader experience on the Mac desktop.

Conclusion

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, Mac desktop clients for Google Reader are a new phenomenon. This can be seen clearly by the fact that all three pieces of software I looked at are still in Beta. As it stands today, I don’t find any of them offer the mix of features and performance I’m looking for, so I still use a Fluid SSB with Google Gears for offline support to access Google Reader. All three applications offer hope for the future, however, and I can easily see myself using one of these in a year.

What had been so great – if anything – about NeNewsWire for iPhone was that it was able

What had been so great – if anything – about NeNewsWire for iPhone was that it was able to sync the status of your feeds with the desktop application. This means that if you’ve already read an article on your Mac and then left your computer to…say…meet some friends and then checked again, the built-in NewsGator account support would show you the articles you’ve already read so you could continue with the next unread.

A few weeks ago, a new version of NetNewsWire for Mac was pushed out, discontinuing the company’s own synchronization service and switching to Google Reader Sync.

For me, this was the beginning of a major problem. First, the new NetNewsWire had no Clippings any more (which I tend to use quite often). Second, I somehow had to rearrange my Feed groups because I had never used Google Reader before. But these “issues” were fixed soon after the first update.

Now another Problem emerged. Regarding what was called the only feature of NetNewsWire for iPhone that (besides its name) made it look like belonging to its Big Brother on the Mac, namely the ability to sync with NewsGator, has been kind of removed because NetNewsWire on the Mac now syncs with Google. And for three weeks now, the iPhone Version still lacks an Update which includes Google Reader Sync, making the App show thousands of unread Feeds though I’ve already read them on my Mac and though making it nearly useless.

So, NewsGator, if it was really necessary to switch over to Google Reader Sync, please make NetNewsWire for iPhone do the same.

iFUN.de/iPhone :: Alles zum iPhone − Paper – Get on your Feeds: Schöner, kostenloser RSS-Reader.

Today CleanApp is doing its stuff on two applications which I have used a lot in my Mac days.

The first is NetNewsWire. I’ve been a fan of this app since I got my Mac, having been a FeedDemon user on Windows. It’s clean uncluttered layout was just what I wanted and the fact that in the early days I could keep my feeds in sync whether I was using NetNewsWire or FeedDemon was really handy. Truth is though, I only use Windows for one or two specific tasks these days and reading RSS feeds isn’t one of them so the sync feature is not really critical any more. Also, even though I installed NetNewsWire on the iPhone, it was more out of curiosity than anything else as I much prefer to read my news on my 24″ monitor. The actual nail in the coffin was the introduction of adverts in the newest releases of NetNewsWire. Yes I know I posted a tip on how to block the ads using LittleSnitch, and someone commented that you can also use your Hosts file to the same effect, but it’s more a case of not wanting to have to. How long would that tactic last before blocking ads would somehow mess up the app completely?

Vienna

So have I abandoned news feeds altogether? Not at all! I have switched to using Vienna instead. It has the same sort of nice uncluttered interface and most of the features that NetNewsWire had are there or will be at some point. Sure there are a couple of things I miss at the moment, like not being able to flag a news item from a button on the toolbar (you have to right-click/Ctrl-Click and choose from the menu instead). Also, if I double-click an item to see the full article in my browser, the colour of the item doesn’t change in Vienna to indicate that I’ve done this (in the past this proved useful for a few items I forgot to flag). Still, these are minor points and Vienna works just fine at the moment. Oh and one other thing… every time I see the word Vienna that song by Midge Ure in his Ultravox days pops into my head!! Please make it stop!

The other application that CleanApp has worked its magic on is Nambu. Now it seems these days that there’s no end of Twitter clients out there, each with their followers and for me Nambu was the one I used the most. However, the developers of Nambu have called time on it so it’s days are numbered. The Tr.im network is closing at the end of the year and they’ve said it’s unlikely Nambu will be developed any further. It’s a great shame but I respect their decision.

Now the question is what to replace it with? Well possible candidates are Twitterrific ($14.95) or Tweetie ($19.95 or ad-supported), but I really would prefer one that’s free and doesn’t contain adverts. My other main requirement is that it doesn’t require Adobe Air in order to run, so the search is on….

Addendum – there’s a new lease of life for Nambu. The developers aren’t going to can it and are currently working on the beta of a new version. Check out the Nambu blog for more information. Me? I’ve already registered for the beta!

Warum finden alle Google Reader so toll?

Please tell me!

The folks over at NewsGator have seemingly given up on consumer news feed syncing and have ceded to

The folks over at NewsGator have seemingly given up on consumer news feed syncing and have ceded to the superiority of Google Reader.

First it was NewsGator’s Windows syncing feed reader Feed Demon that got the switch from NewsGator syncing to Google Reader syncing. Now its the Mac client’s turn and the esteemed reader NetNewsWire has now switched syncing services too. Yeterday’s announcement by NewsGator states that its will be taking its NewsGator Online news feed reading and syncing service offline by the end of August. This leaves little time for NetNewsWire to fast track a stable switch to Google Reader syncing, but yesterday the first public beta of NetNewsWire 3.2 was made available.

There are a few differences between how NewsGator and Google Reader do their syncing. Notably Google Reader does not support folders within folders, which poses a problem for people who have organized their feeds in such a way. ‘Flagged’ items in NetNewsWire get transplanted as ‘Starred’ items in Google Reader, but the ’shared’ and ‘liked’ features are not supported yet.

Beyond the big change of where feeds are synced to, the new version supports sending articles to InstaPaper, sports a fancy new icon and has had a general code cleanup to boot. Being able to sync to NewsGator is not even an option anymore (due to NewsGator stopping their service) and neither is the previously available alternative option of syncing to .Mac or an FTP site. The Clippings functionality is also currently missing in action; they haven’t been deleted, but there is no way to access them.

Not all users are happy with the new beta, as can been seen on the NetNewsWire forum. NetNewsWire was originally a paid application, which was then turned into a free application by NewsGator. The new beta contains a relatively large ad embedded in the bottom left of the window. In the future, this can be turned off with a yet unannounced payment system of some sort, which of course has some people up in arms. While one can usually say “just stick with the existing version” this won’t apply beyond August when NewsGator shuts off its sync servers. But for a syncing service without any monthly fees, you’re always taking this risk. Personally, I’m happy to switch to Google Reader and can cope with ads. Developers need income too!

An updated version of NetNewsWires for the iPhone/iPod touch is also in the works that will support Google Reader syncing. The release date for this is currently unknown. For those that are interested, you can follow the progress of the new betas at nnwbeta.com and even follow the developer’s twitter account recounting the coding work.

English | Español I have been using NewsGator applications for quite a long time in order to be up-t

English | Español

I have been using NewsGator applications for quite a long time in order to be up-to-date on everything that goes on in technology and gaming, especially its Web version (NewsGator Online) and its Windows software (FeedDemon). However, this morning’s news from BradSoft surprised me about its planned changes.

NewsGator will no longer continue offering its free consumer version of NewsGator Online. It has been my favorite RSS aggregator. I was even using it more than the Windows app. It saves all of the feeds online, instead of storing it on my PC. Now I’m going to have to say adiós to it. Because it works together with NG Online, I’ve recently synchronized FeedDemon to work with Google Reader instead of with its own NG service. Enterprise clients will see no changes and will still use NG Online. NG recommends its users to download and install the latest version of their Windows and Mac software (NetNewsWire) to be able to synchronize it with Google Reader. An iPhone version of NNW is also available.

The company will also discontinue support the free consumer versions of NewsGator Inbox, NewsGator Go!, and NewsGator’s RSS features after August 31st. If you are a NewsGator user, you can go to its site to get more info such as instructions and FAQs.
