What a day for basketball and hockey! It doesn’t look like there are any NBA games I can play

What a day for basketball and hockey! It doesn’t look like there are any NBA games I can play straight but I still have a few teasers to do.

Hockey, on the otherhand, has produced quite a few nice plays, but the moneyline is a little too weak for some of them to actually be playable. I don’t go less than -150.

By the way, the NHL game you can watch for free tonight is Chicago Blackhawks vs San Jose Sharks. It should be a good game. Just click on that link once the game starts and you should see a “watch live” button somewhere.

Also, this is going to be a quick pick day again as I am too busy to write out the full details. And I’m putting my O/U picks on hiatus until I find a good system for that.

First, my NBA picks:

DEN VS MIN; DEN -4.5 (bought 4)

NJ VS POR; POR -11.5 (bought 1)

GS VS SA; GS +17.5 (bought 4)

NY VS SAC; SAC +2.5 (bought 7)

I played Portland as a straight wager with a 1 point buy. I also included the Blazers in a few teasers, which included the other teams:

4pt teaser: POR -8.5, DEN -4.5, GS -17.5

7pt teaser: POR -5.5, DEN -1.5, GS -20.5

7pt teaser: SAC +2.5, DEN -1.5, GS -20.5

And for the NHL games, I just did a 3-team parlay as that makes the most sense. Why bet straight on a bunch of -200 teams when you can combine them to give you a 3-to-1 payout? Normally it’s not quite that good of a payout, I don’t think. I’m pretty sure sportsbook.com is doing some Thanksgiving promotion on parlays.

Parlay:

MON vs PIT

CAR vs ANA

TOR vs TB

There were others that showed up as strong games but since I’m just getting into the NHL again and this system is so new I didn’t want to get greedy. I’ll call them on here, but just know I didn’t bet on these.

PHI vs NYI

OTT vs NJ

BUF vs WAS

STL vs DAL

NAS vs COL

PHO vs CAL

Some of this week’s takeaways:

Given that the Celtics last year started out 27-3, that there is not one 2 loss team left this early in the season is kind of striking. The teams we expected to suck out loud (Grizzlies, Griffin-less Clippers, I’m looking at you) are actually just ordinarily mediocre.

A new #1 emerges in Portland. The Celtics slip to #3 on the strength (weakness) of a ghastly shooting night against the Magic and a very mediocre effort against the Knicks (and frankly, a fairly desultory one against the Warriors). As a fan, I was getting used to my Lester Hudson sightings.

Blazers winning on the strength of an efficient 6th ranked offense, which might not be highlighted by announcers because of their very slow tempo (2nd to last in the league). Their 2nd ranked defense has been a revelation too – Greg Oden is quietly having an outstanding season – and if he knew how to play without fouling, Bill Simmons’ homoerotic Kevin Durant love would be kind of unfounded.

Wow the Timberwolves are bad. With a good PG in Sessions and an interesting rookie in Flynn and a very capable post player, how they are so constipated offensively is hard to fathom. At least the Nets have been ravaged by injuries. (btw: how can Lawrence Frank be on the chopping block when his entire starting five and only all star has been hurt most of the season?)

Rockets are #6 still – and still, I am stunned.

Keith R.P. Warner, President of Highland Water LLC in Denver, Colorado, has been named Chief Executive Officer of the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation (CCF). The appointment was announced by Richard R.P. Warner, M.D., Medical Director of the Foundation, who said, “I am delighted that CCF’s Board of Directors has selected my son for the position of CEO. The Foundation was founded by my family and patients in the late 1960s to enable me to continue my research on this rare cancer. With Keith Warner’s appointment, the legacy of the Foundation will continue. His background in business and administration makes him the ideal CEO for the fifth decade and beyond of The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation.”

According to Keith Warner, “I am personally committed to changing the statistic that over 90% of all carcinoid/NET patients are initially incorrectly diagnosed and treated for the wrong disease. We must bring greater awareness to these rare cancers as we all look towards the day there is a cure for carcinoid/NET patients. I am very excited about the future of The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation as we work with carcinoid/NET patients, the medical and healthcare communities, corporations and foundations, and our Board of Directors.”

An entrepreneur, Mr. Warner has founded or acquired a number of companies ranging from the wine industry to management consulting. Since 2004 he has been President of Highland Water LLC, a supplier of industrial, commercial, and water treatment systems. He founded Strategicore Consulting, for which he provided extensive management consulting services to various technology, product, and service companies, including Pristine Health, a venture capital group; All Star Kids Fitness Center; and Stassen North America, a private label tea/herb manufacturer. He was Co-Founder and President of the Rocky Mountain Spice Company, a spice importer/food manufacturer, and Co-Founder and Vice President of Ready Care Industries, a distributor/manufacturer of locker room beauty care products. He has also worked for a Wall Street money management firm and in commercial real estate.

Mr. Warner earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Denver and a Master’s degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in marketing and finance, from Boston University, with national honors recognition.

On the eve of a new ‘Nets’ project workshop, whose theme is to see ‘where we are going’, it may be worth reading over these initial notes of participants’ thoughts. Other strands to the ‘nets’ thread might have been pursued since then, but these responses showed a common understanding that the basic nature of the systems we are examining is (in the words of one participant) ‘all about control’.

What are ‘nets’ used for?

- filtering, catching, hunting, hiding, separating , collecting, controlling, excluding, provoking, intriguing, alluding

What do they make you think of (associations)?

- camouflaging/ obscuring/ hiding, display/ façade,

- fire-walls/ filtering/ censoring/ entrapment,

- slipping through safety nets (homelessness),

The initiative for the ‘Nets’ project arose out of a group meditation on the ambiguous n

The initiative for the ‘Nets’ project arose out of a group meditation on the ambiguous nature of ocean nets, which have been appropriated to become the benign backdrop for a magical marine world of mermaids, starfish and sunken galleons – a fish and chip shop cliché – despite the fact that, with their increasingly destructive impact on the natural world, they are truly sinister. This ambiguity of nets suggested their potential as a metaphor for other ‘nets’ in the world, similarly operating to capture, to control, exclude. Now there is a group of artists (including those from 3 diverse university departments, in 3 diverse countries) viewing their own subjects of interest within such a ‘nets’ framework .

We are working up to exhibitions of ‘Nets’ artworks – maybe paintings, sculpture, architecture, design, performance art, as well as digital and virtual works. They will be representative of an artist’s personal and cultural reflections, as well as the opportunity for symbolic interpretations and postmodern reinterpretations. They may allude to socio-political aspects such as class, power, ideologies, etc; experiences of the world, personal to the artist or experienced by a social group.

In setting a broad scope of the ‘Nets’ project, we can adopt an inclusive definition of ‘art’. George Dickie is a Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at University of Illinois at Chicago and one of the most influential philosophers of art working in the analytical tradition. His ‘Institutional’ theory about the nature of art has both inspired supporters, who produced variations on the theory, as well as being criticized by detractors for being over-inclusive. For him a work of art is an artefact, some aspect of which has had the status of ‘candidate for appreciation’ conferred upon it by anyone who believes themselves to be part of the art world (importantly, craft is not art, though, of course, craft techniques and skills may well be employed in the making of artworks).

‘Nets’ naturally leans towards ‘conceptual art’, which can be said to be any art that is predominantly idea-based – rather than created mainly for aesthetic appreciation. In a broader sense, perhaps almost all art has some conceptual element (religious art, impressionism, cubism); but only where this dominates do we usually speak of a work as conceptual.

On the eve of another ‘Nets’ project workshop, to see ‘where we are going’, it may be worth reading over these notes from the first workshop – back in June. Other strands to the ‘nets’ thread might have been teased out since then, but these responses show that we considered the basic nature of the devices we were looking at to be – in the words of one participant – ‘all about control’.

What are ‘nets’ used for?

- filtering, catching, hunting, hiding, separating , collecting, controlling, excluding, provoking, intriguing, alluding

What do they make you think of (associations)?

- camouflaging/ obscuring/ hiding, display/ façade,

- fire-walls/ filtering/ censoring/ entrapment,

- slipping through safety nets (homelessness),

- by-catch/ collateral damage,

#1 – Atlanta Hawks The best team of the NBA so far. Josh Smith has been superb in the first 14 games

#1 – Atlanta Hawks

The best team of the NBA so far. Josh Smith has been superb in the first 14 games. He has been the horse they have been riding. The Hawks had a weird loss to the Hornets Friday but that’s Ok on the road and on a second of back-to-backs.

#2 – Cleveland Cavaliers

Without Shaq, the team plays better. He just doesn’t fit there and with him out for a while now, they were able to give minutes to JJ Hickson who could be the solution for their problems, certainly not offensively but maybe defensively.

#3 – Phoenix Suns

The Suns remain red hot. 2nd best record of the league so far, even with the loss to the Hornets on Thursday which shouldn’t be a shock because every time that the Suns are dominated on the boards, they lose, and it’s a lock just like that.

#4 – Los Angeles Lakers

Gasol is back and that means the Lakers should make their push to the league’s best record now. With the Spanish Center there, they are just so tough to beat, they are big and physical.

#5 – Orlando Magic

With Rashard Lewis back, they become a matchup nightmare again. The win against the Celtics highlighted that. Vince Carter is coming alive, against Boston he scored 26, turned the ball over a lot but took the game over in the end and that what you expect from your superstar and the reason why Orlando traded for him.

#6 – Denver Nuggets

Carmelo Anthony has been terrific so far and put himself in the MVP race however they are still not on the same level as last season. Their defense has been OK but when Billups doesn’t play well, all of a sudden nobody else but Carmelo produces.

#7 – Dallas Mavericks

Nowitzki has been carrying them because the bunch of injuries already started, Marion and Howard haven’t played together for a decent amount of time, and it’s not close to end.

#8 – Boston Celtics

On back-to-backs they look old. The loss against the Magic can be faced as a problem but when healthy, they are still the best team in the NBA. The question is: for how long will they remain healthy?

#9 – Milwaukee Bucks

The Jenningsmania is all over the NBA, even in this Power Rankings.

#10 – Portland Trail Blazers

Travis Outlaw is out with the same injury that held Webster for the entire season last year and that’s a hit on their second unit. The 3 men backcourt has survived so far but maybe is time to trade Miller.

#11 – Miami Heat

As Wade goes, they go which means that so far, they are a playoff team.

#12 – Houston Rockets

Even I’m convinced that this team needs somebody who can create his own shots on clutch moments. That guy is neither Ariza nor Brooks. Hopefully McGrady won’t screw the good vibe around the team.

#13 – Oklahoma City Thunder

When those four guys score, they are tough to hold. Lately even when they lose, they are on the game until the end. As the season progresses, they progress and the Western Conference should watch out.

#14 – Utah Jazz

With Williams back and Boozer stepping up, the Jazz won all three games this week including one against the Spurs which was their first in San Antonio in 20 games.

#15 – Toronto Raptors

They won 42% of their games. With all the money spent in this team and with playoff expectations around them, they have to perform better.

#16 – San Antonio Spurs

Ginobili and Parker out this week, injuries caught with them like expected. They always start slow, so no worry there.

#17 – Chicago Bulls

Derrick Rose has struggled a lot and that’s a real problem. This is a team that has a lot of variations and formations but it’s only 8 deep.

#18 – Indiana Pacers

They are who we thought they were: a .500 team.

#19 – Detroit Pistons

With Hamilton and Prince out, they have been able to hang in there but the problems are the same, lack of size inside and no rebounders, and when they face decent competition, that’s a problem.

#20 – Sacramento Kings

They are 5-7. Can you believe that?! The Kings won 41.7% of their games and that’s crazy. Tyreke Evans and Omir Caspi have been big so far.

#21 – Los Angeles Clippers

Yes, they have been a disappointment but when Gordon and Griffin return, they should be better. The push to the playoffs is yet to come but Kaman has played the best basketball of his career and Baron Davis is finally finding himself on that offense. Their second unit is amazing.

#22 – New Orleans Hornets

Without Chris Paul and with the new coach, they played well this week. Rookies getting more playing time and when Stojakovic shows up to play, they are not that bad. It’s tough to see them over .500 though.

#23 – Philadelphia 76ers

They are the ones to open a playoff spot on the East. They face problems on offense and defense. With Brand there, they haven’t been as committed to Iguodala on offense which they should if they want to save the season.

#24 – Golden State Warriors

Jackson is gone and the Warriors got cap relief instead. They’ll play shorthanded for the rest of the season but Don Nelson likes it this way. Nelson who, by the way, is 23 wins away from his record which means he’s 23 wins away from retirement what could mean that next season, maybe the Warriors will be OK.

#25 – Charlotte Bobcats

Probably the dumbest team in the NBA. The franchise is for sale but yet they took on Jackson’s awful contract in a move that won’t make them better than those teams they are fighting.

#26 – Memphis Grizzlies

Iverson is now gone for good. It’s time for them to translate talent into wins.

#27 – Washington Wizards

They have been the most disappointing team so far.

#28 – New York Knicks

Apparently they refused going after Allen Iverson, which would at least entertain us, because of Eddie Curry and Toney Douglas. I have no words for that.

#29 – Minnesota Timberwolves

They miss Kevin Love but as expected they would be bad anyway.

#30 – New Jersey Nets

They have been banged up but nothing justifies that awful start. Douglas Roberts is back, so is Harris, which means the offense should be better but the 0-17 start looks real.

Despite the pain of depriving myself of sleep in order to watch the Knicks slump to their worst ever

Despite the pain of depriving myself of sleep in order to watch the Knicks slump to their worst ever start to an NBA season, week 4 gave me reason for hope. Why? Well, the Knicks only had two games on their schedule meaning, even if they lost both, their streak of losing three games every week would definitely come to an end.

As it turned out, the Knicks beat both the Indiana Pacers and the lowly New Jersey Nets on the road to creep towards the cusp of semi-respectability with a less-embarrassing-than-we-are-used-to three wins and nine losses.

The key to victory in Indiana was so clear even I, watching bleary-eyed in London at 2am, was able to spot it. Trailing by 19 points in the third quarter, the Knicks finally started to play consistent defence and make some shots.

In a picture-perfect reversal of their loss to the Pacers on November 4, the Knicks sparked a heartening rally, outscoring their hosts 27-7 in the final seven minutes 30 secnds of fourth quarter to record a much-needed 110-103 win. They forced the Pacers to shoot a miserable 25% in the game’s final stanza, stifling and frustrating Danny Granger to such a degree that the Pacers’ chief scorer fouled out.

On the offensive end, the Knicks bench outscored Indiana’s second unit 65-22 with Al Harrington firing a team-high 26 points, including three fourth quarter 3-pointers that instigated the game-winning comeback. Larry Hughes’ player of the game performance featured 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

The Indiana victory also marked the return of troubled center Eddy Curry who, having shed 50 pounds, literally looked like a shadow of himself. I’m not wholly convinced it was actually Curry on the court.

The slimmed-down big man claiming to Curry looked exactly like Eddy Curry except for the addition of a thin goatee on his chin. It reminded me of Bender’s nemesis Flexo in Futurama, a robot who looked identical to his rival save for a tiny piece of chin-hair. Either way Curry/Flexo Curry looked surprisingly good in a 12-minute cameo that yielded 10 points and four rebounds. The big man has a long way to go to get back to maximum match fitness but , after all his problems, it was good to see him back and looking able to provide an inside scoring punch.

The three-day gap between the Pacers and Nets games was filled with speculation surrounding the potential signing of free agent Allen Iverson. After an initial flirtation, Donnie Walsh surprised most observers by passing on the former MVP. It’s a good job he did this. After preaching patience and the need to development his core of young players, the addition of AI would not only have robbed the likes of Wilson Chandler and Toney Douglas of minutes and shots but would have made Walsh look indecisive, panic-ridden and, at worst, a hypocrite.

Saying no to The Answer allowed Walsh to stick steadfastly to his long-term plan and show a degree of faith in his young stars. Iverson bringing his me-first ball-hog act to the Garden may have given the Knicks a handful of extra wins this year but the potential for locker room disruption – as witnessed in Memphis – would have been huge. To my mind, Walsh made the right choice.

When a team is on a historically bad losing streak, no-one wants to be their first victim. That fear placed pressure on the Knicks as they faced the 0-12 New Jersey Nets, who were boosted by the return of their best player Devin Harris. With a West Coast swing looming, playing the Knicks at home offered the Nets their best chance of recording a victory before they approach 0-17, the league’s worst ever start held, somewhat predictably, by the 1998 LA Clippers.

The usual deathly silence of the Izod Center was replaced by some relatively raucous travelling Knicks fans who witnessed a fairly comfortable win for their team.

The Knicks shot 45% to lead 52-43 at the half. The offence was balanced with Harrington, Danilo Gallinari and Larry Hughes mixing drives to the hoop with outside shooting. It wasn’t such a good night for Nate Robinson who raised the ire of Mike D’Antoni by jacking up a three point towards his own basket at the end of the first quarter. With only half a second left on the clock, Nate launched the shot just after the buzzer. The shot swished home and a beaming Nate returned to the bench. The smile was wiped off his face by a raging D’Antoni who, after berating Robinson, benched him for the rest of the game. Was it an overreaction from the coach or a way to instill the need to focus into all his players? Probably both.

The Knicks extended their lead to 15 points by the middle of the third and, save for a Chris Douglas-Roberts-inspired fourth quarter 16-2 rally that bought the Nets within two, held on fairly comfortably for a 98-91 win. A 3-point dagger from Harrington, who seems to save his best performances for games against the Nets, sealed the deal. David Lee, who combined with Chris Duhon for some crucial baskets down the stretch, finished with 16 points and 12 boards.

A record of three and nine certainly isn’t anything to boast about but, with a home match-up against Boston and road games in Los Angeles and Denver coming up, winning both games this week provides D’Antoni’s men with a much needed boost. They’ll need all the confidence and luck they can muster over the next seven days.

As I said before, I’m no longer picking every game, only the ones I feel most confident in. I’ll see if that helps my falling percentages. I’m still going to give you all of my NFL picks though.

Also, I have realized I need to edit my “Strategies for Success” series as some of my strategies are not successful. I’m still working out the details so hang tight.

NY vs NJ; NJ -2, u-193

Nets are due for their first win, and what better team to do it against?

ATL vs NO; NO +5.5, u-208

Atlanta is starting to fatigue and New Orleans is looking good even without Chris Paul. It’s time for Atlanta’s streak to come to an end.

MIL vs MEM, MIL +3, u-198

I thought I was reading this wrong at first, but the Bucks are the underdog here. Both coming off a win, both played Friday, both traveling to Memphis. Memphis has been looking hot but the better team wins here.

Ah yes, home sweet home. After seven of eight out west, the Raptors are back at the ACC tonight to face Dwyane Wade and the Heat. The boys escaped the trip at 2-5 (wins in New Orleans and LA) and sit at 5-7 on the year — to be honest, a mark I’m pretty, pretty pleased with at this point. As always, a full preview for tonight’s game is available at Raptors Republic, including my world-famous simulation.

Miami enters tonight’s game at 7-4, but don’t be deceived: The Heat’s schedule has been the opposite of Toronto’s — not to hate on the Knicks and Nets, but it’s been a walk in the park, highlighted by eight of 11 at home. With apologies to first-class citizen Jermaine O’Neal, the Heat really have nothing going for them aside from Wade. Case in point: The Band-Aid Man was 6-of-18 for 15 points in Atlanta Wednesday and Miami was pasted 105-90. If the Raptors can keep Wade from going out of his mind, this should be a comfortable win.

With “defensive stopper” Antoine Wright expected out for Toronto, the Raptors will be forced into throwing a host of defenders at Wade, none of which, I’m sure, will be Jose Calderon. With Udonis Haslem unlikely to dress for the Heat, Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani should be set for field days against O’Neal and big softy Michael “Supercool” Beasley. No excuses for Andrea — time to get back to work after a couple nightmarish games.

The Raptors and Heat get it popping at seven.

I have to give my Redskins some props for a really solid win over Denver. Knowing what kind of retarded owner we have makes it difficult to enjoy a win. As a fan, I don’t want to see Dan Snyder gain any sort of confidence from a win against a team that was counterfeit from the start of the season. The last thing any Washington Redskins fan wants is Snyder starting to feel like his moves were the right ones all along. I’m really starting to hate Denver Broncos fans. They’re slowly working their way up my list. The top three most annoying fans in the world, in no particular order, PA fans *gag*, DallASS Cowgirls, and Duke Blue Devils. You know what, I take back the preface about these three in no particular order. That looks about right. Steelers fans suck, Eagles fans suck, Penguins fans suck, you all are vile human beings. Cleveland Cavaliers fans would be next on the list. Cavs fans shouldn’t be allowed to carry that kind of swag just because they lucked out and landed a star like LeBron James. Good luck with that when he bolts and you hear him singing “Tell me how my ass tastes!” while showing off his new New York Knicks or New Jersey Nets jersey. The only reason Denver Broncos fans are inching their way up is because of the blind homer comments I am blessed to hear on a daily basis. I apologize for the digression. Even with this win, I’m looking at the rest of our schedule and it’s hard to find 2 more wins. The way I see it, ending this season at .500 would be the greatest success of Dan Snyder’s tenure. It’s not going to happen. If I imagine the best case scenario, we finish 5-11. The last 2 wins coming from a split with Dallas and, hopefully, a dismantling of the Raiders, an organization that’s actually worse off than Washington.

I’m a little worried about the Nets. They are 0-10. I cannot remember the last time they were this bad. Now, they’re not getting blown out, but they’re also not scoring and doing whatever else it takes to win. 0-10 is a tough hole to dig yourself out of. I don’t think they can do it. Devin Harris can’t keep missing games. I thought we could be competitive this year, but without Vince Carter, it will be hard. I don’t think we are the worst team in the league, but the record clearly says that we are. No free agent is going to want to come to a winless team. Wins (hopefully) are still a priority for a top player. Jay-Z and the possibility of Brooklyn isn’t going to cut it. So I suggest the Nets win the rest of their games, finish 72-10, and tie the Bulls for the most wins in a season. Otherwise, we may be in for a long year.

Another dismal day for me yesterday as my slump continued. I was 3-1 in NBA and 2-2 ATS and 3-1 O/U

Another dismal day for me yesterday as my slump continued. I was 3-1 in NBA and 2-2 ATS and 3-1 O/U. Combined with the MNF game I was 3-2, 2-3, 3-2. I feel tonight may change things around.

Tons of great NBA and NCAAB games today. After just watching some of these early games I’ve realized I need to learn a lot more about this year’s college hoops teams before I start really picking them. For example, I never would have expected Kentucky to win over Miami (OH) by 2, nor would I have thought CSU-Fullerton would beat UCLA. But that’s how it goes I guess. So here are my picks for the NBA games today:

GS v CLE, GS +15, o-215

Without Shaq, the Cavs will be a little lighter on defense than normal. GS knows how to score (only 2 games under 100 points this year), they just can’t play defense too well, which means it may be tough to stop LeBron. But they’ll be able to keep up enough to stay within 15 points. Plus getting rid of Jackson may be a big burden off of their shoulders that will help them relax.

IND v NJ, IND -4, u 188.5

I just know the Nets have to win a game sometime. I wanted to put them over the Pacers here as the Nets almost beat Miami the other day. But Miami has been struggling and Indiana is on fire right now. I can’t pick a team who just beat the Celtics to lose to a team that has yet to win a game in its first 10 tries. Pacers should at least have 6 wins in a row after their game against the Knicks after this one.

OKC v MIA, MIA-5.5, o-179.5

The Thunder has been uncharacteristically good while the Heat has looked a little flat this year. Both teams will look like their normal selves tonight as Miami takes control. People are starting to take notice of Oklahoma City, which means they’ll start playing more aggressively.

LAC vs NO, NO -1.5, u-192

The Clippers have lost 10 straight to New Orleans and have lost the last 3 in New Orleans by an average of nearly 23 points. However, the Hornets are without Chris Paul, their lead man. On top of that, the Clippers looked amazing in their win against the Thunder. They say all good things come in threes. Or something like that. What I’m trying to say is “they” don’t know anything about basketball, as the Clippers will still lose this one. The Hornets don’t need Paul to win and it may even let someone else finally shine.

PHO vs HOU, PHO +2, u-221

The Rockets’ stock is way up as they beat the Lakers on Sunday. Did everyone forget they also lost to the Sacramento Kings on Friday? I just can’t go against Nash and the Suns.

TOR vs DEN, DEN -7.5, u-219

After starting 5-0, Denver went on to lose 3 out of 4 before then crushing the Lakers on Friday. They’ve had 3 long days to think about that game and rest up in Denver for a matchup against the Raptors, who are definitely an underrated team. They have some potential but are very schizophrenic. On top of that, and this being their 3rd of 4 road games and they are playing at elevation, Denver will take this one.

CHI vs SAC; SAC -1, u-198

The Bulls just aren’t looking great so far. They have one of the worst scoring units in the league and their differential is -3.1. Until they can change that, I’ll go with the home team with an undefeated home record.

DET vs LAL; DET +10, u-191.5

No odds up yet but I’ll take the Lakers at home on this one. With Kobe slowed by his groin it won’t be a blowout but maybe by 6-8 points. If the spread is -8.5 or greater I’ll have do a little more research, and if it’s more than -11.5 I’ll probably just go with the Pistons.

The topic I chose to research is the Nets possible move to Newark instead of Brooklyn. While I still believe Prudential Center is the best thing to come to the city in ages, I also believe the Nets coming to the city would be an even bigger boost for both the city and the state. It would pump more revenue in the city and help to change the publics view about Newark. Now that NJ has more sports/concert venues I also feel that this area cant handle another one, it would hurt everyone in the end. Last, New York get too much from NJ. The Giants and Jets playing in NJ but using New York’s name is something I don’t understand, if you play here, your ours! Keep the Nets in Jersey

N.J. NETS pack preseason at Newak’s Prudential Center with Ticket giveaways, discounts

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/10/nj_nets_pack_preseason_at_newa.html

This article details Prudential Center being filled near capacity for the Nets pre-season game. Newark is using this as proof that a move to Newark is the ideal choice, being that there is a strong fan base and easy accessibility. The article also shows that steep discounts were given on the tickets in order to get people to the game. It showcases the fact that not even Izod Center is filled with as many fans.

Prudential Center vs. Izod Center: Proper end to NJ’s dueling arena saga

http://blog.nj.com/njv_editorial_page/2009/10/prudential_center_vs_izod-cent.html

This article talks about the plans to finalize plans for each arena’s use, being a few exits apart from each other on the Turnpike. It would keep Prudential Center as the Sports Arena for the NJ devils and Seton Hall Pirates and use Izod Center as the family and entertainment arena. This would turn a weakness into a strength and keep promoters from pitting the two against each other.

The Nets are coming to Newark! The Nets are coming to Newark! Maybe

http://blog.nj.com/njv_joan_whitlow/2009/10/nj-devils-need-to-pay-the-rent.html

This opinion article by Joan Whitlow discusses the possible move from Izod Center to Prudential Center for the Nets, at least until the Brooklyn arena is ready. The Nets have a contract to stay at Izod Center until the Atlantic Yards complex is ready, however, they received such a positive response in Newark that they could possibly be moving, leaving Izod Center high and dry.

I believe the last article by Joan Whitlow, “The Nets are coming to Newark” is the best article. She makes solid argument as to why the Nets should come to the city and how much it would help with cash flow, as well as regeneration. It also details a plan to have both arena’s under one booking agent to keep them from competing and ultimately hurting each other.

After losing their 10th consecutive game to start the 2009-10 season, the New Jersey Nets elected to buy their first win.

Mikhail Prokhorov, the Russian billionaire who is very close to a deal to purchase majority ownership of the Nets franchise, paid the NBA $10 million for the victory – or what he spends on a posh party during a typical weekend.

“First we’ll buy wins,” Prokhorov said. “Eventually we’ll be able to buy championships, then the NBA. Just watch.”

Cleveland Cavaliers swingman LeBron James may be the offseason’s hot commodity, but Prokhorov isn’t interested in bidding for the budding superstar.

“What’s the point?” said Prokhorov. “We don’t need Lebron. In fact, we don’t need anyone. All you need as money. It buys everything… parties, girls, wins, championships and happiness.”

New Jersey, which was on the verge of becoming the first team in NBA history to go winless over the course of an 82-game season, will have significant cap space in the offseason.

However, according to Prokhorov, the team will instead elect to spend it on future wins.

“There’s no point in paying someone to play when I can just do everything myself,” Prokhorov said.
NBA Commissioner David Stern, who accepted the deal, is facing heavy criticism from the rest of the league for taking – what is considered by many – to be a bribe.

“Economic times are tough for everyone,” Stern said. “I’ll take what I can get, even if it means losing any of my league’s integrity. After all, we never really had any anyway.”

we all know that the nets are off to their worst start in their franchise history. they have fallen into a huge hole. but are they that bad or are the nets just the unfortunate losers. in all 10 games that they have played they have averaged 84.5 points a game. what is mostly troubling is how many games were in reach. they have had 4 games lost by 3 or less points. when it matters most the net seem to be losing. i do not think the nets are as bad as their record. i do wonder however how the nets would be doing if they still had Vince Carter. he was their best player last year. i have no idea why they would trade him. now the team looks lost while on the court. the nets need to win against the Pacers or they will be having some serious moral problems.
