Windows Internet Exp

Safari

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

Yahoo

Web Inspector

Top Site

Google Chrome

Camino

Netscape Navigator

Arjen Vrielink and I write a monthly series titled: Parallax. We both agree on a title for the post and on some other arbitrary restrictions to induce our creative process. For this post we agreed to include our personal browser histories in the post. You can read Arjen’s post with the same title here.

Chromium Logo

If you are not interested in Browsers and/or usability, I would suggest you don’t bother to read this post.

I cannot exactly remember the first time I used the Internet. It probably was in 1996 in the library at the Universiteit Utrecht. I wasn’t particularly aware of the browser I was using, but I am quite sure that is was Netscape Navigator with which I did the Altavista searches. I used Netscape throughout my education, only to switch to Internet Explorer 5 when I got my own computer with Windows 98 and a dial-up Internet connection. I then used nothing but IE until I read about Mozilla Firefox in a magazine in 2004. Through Moodle I had started appreciating open source software and I liked working with Firefox and its tabs. I stuck with Firefox for a year or so, feeling quite the rebel whenever a site would only load in IE. At some point I noticed how much faster IE was than Firefox. That is when I switched to Avant Browser, a freeware skin around the IE browser engine which included tabs and some other advanced features. A little while later (somewhere in late 2005 or early 2006) I learnt about Opera. Opera had a lot of appeal to me. I liked how their developers pushed so many innovations in the browser space: tabbed browsing, advanced security features and mouse gestures were all inventions of Opera. I loved how fast it was and how many features they managed to cram in so little megabytes. Its cross platform nature allowed me to stay with Opera when I permanently switched to Ubuntu in the summer of 2006. I switched back to Firefox in early 2007 because of my slightly more hardcore open source attitude and because of its wonderful extensions. The latter allowed me to keep all the functionality that I loved about Opera and more.

About two weeks ago I switched to Chromium. This is Google’s relatively new open source offering in the browser market. I am able to automatically download new builds every day through the PPA for Ubuntu Chromium Daily Builds. Even though it is still beta alpha software, it is highly usable.

So why did I switch? I think there are three reasons:

1. Performance
Since a couple of months my private computing is done with a Samsung NC10. This Intel Atom based netbook is slightly underpowered. You really notice this when you are doing things like recoding a video or doing some CPU intensive image editing. I also noticed it terribly in Firefox. Things like Google Reader, DabbleDB (watch that 8 minute demo!) and the WordPress admin interface were nearly unusable. A cold start of Firefox (the 2.x version that comes with Ubuntu 9.04) takes nearly a minute. Chromium on the other hand starts up in a couple of seconds and is very spiffy with Javascript-heavy web-apps.

I tried to quantify my unmistakable feelings with some benchmarking. Its interface is also still less responsive than I would like it to be.

Another nice aspect about Chromium’s performance is that each tab is its own process. This so called Multi Process Architecture isolates problem webpages so that one Flash page crashing does not affect the other browser tabs, something that happened very often to me with Firefox.

2. Screen Real Estate
Another thing that a netbook lacks is pixels. My screen is 1024 pixels wide and 600 pixels high. Especially the lack of height is sometimes taxing. I have done a lot of things in Ubuntu to mitigate this problem (if you are interested I could write a post about that) and I had to do the same with Firefox.

In Firefox I used Tiny Menu, chose small icons, used no bookmarks and combined many toolbars into one to make sure that I have more content and less browser. To my surprise I had to do nothing with Chromium and still got a bigger canvas with a bigger font in the address bar! Compare the screenshots below to see the differences:

Screenshot Firefox (click to enlarge)

Screenshot Chromium (click to enlarge)

Chromium shows more of the page and accomplishes this by doing a couple of smart things:

There is no status bar. I could have turned the status bar off in Firefox, but I need to see where a link is pointing to before I click on it. Chromium shows this information dynamically as soon as you hover over a link. When you don’t hover it shows nothing.

The tabs are moved into the title bar. It looks a bit weird for a while, but it uses some very valuable space.

Some things only appear when you need them. The bookmark bar, for example, only shows up when you open a new tab.

3. It is a fresh look at what a browser should/could be
Most of my time behind my computer is spent using a browser. More and more of the applications I use daily have moved into the cloud (e.g. mail and RSS reading). It is thus important to have a browser that is made to do exactly those functions.

The developers of Chromium have looked at all aspects of a traditional browser and have rethought how they work. A couple of examples:

The address bar is actually a tool with four functions. It contains your web history, typing some terms will execute a search in your default search engine (saving me two characters compared to how I search in Firefox), you can type a normal web address and you can use keywords to search. If I type w chromium in the address bar it will search for chromium in Wikipedia. The keyword search also works in Firefox, but Chromium has a prettier and more clear implementation.

When you open a new tab, you see a Dashboard of sites you use often (a variant of another Opera invention). That page also conveniently displays recently closed tabs with a link to your browsing history. The history page has excellent search (it is Google after all!) and has that simple Google look.

The downloads work in a particular way. They automatically save in a default location unless you tick a box confirming that you always like to open that type of file from now on. This takes a little getting used to (I like saving my downloads in different folders), but once again the download history is searchable and looks clean.

In conclusion: Chromium is a browser in which some hard choices were made. No compromises. That means that I, as a user, have to worry about less choices and settings and can focus on being more productive. Making tough interface design choices can be a very successful strategy: witness Apple’s iPod.

For now I will be using Chromium as my primary browser and will use Firefox when I need certain functionalities that only Firefox add-ons can provide.

I am looking forward to what the browser future holds!

So I guess it’s time to plug my Commodore 64 into the Asian outlet converter, plug that into the wall while admiring the healthy near flame-inducing spark, reboot MS-DOS to the C prompt, and restart Netscape Navigator (Yes I have a slightly old computer).

I am currently working on a few different

articles, number 1 being an amusing anecdote about a visit to a colleague’s house for lunch. Also, there is some good news in the works – my friend and #1 co-teacher gets to keep her job. You can scroll down this page to the January19th and 21st to find out more about her getting fired (or not) in Korea, and stay tuned for the finale in the series: Getting Less Fired in Korea.

My friends and I are about a week from the halfway point of our first (and perhaps only) year in Korea. Although common sentiment suggests that “time flies”, I’ll be honest when I say that these 6 months have been the longest of my life.

In other news, I have joined a ball hockey league in Seoul that plays on an inline rink adjacent to the Olympic Stadium every Sunday. It’s called Canada Ball Hockey in Korea (CBHK). I’ll be playing a regular shift on forward and experiencing a weekly pulled groin.

Anyways, 6 months of teaching/babysitting/entertaining ahead of me, this blog will likely continue to be my therapeutic outlet for negative energy. That’s what sells papers I guess.

As always, I’ll try to keep smiling sweetly while blinking, and I suggest you do the same.

Don’t get confused by this title. It is the struggle between Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Google’s Chrome that I am describing here. Mozilla’s Firefox has already send Netscape Navigator into the grave. Microsoft’s Internet E

xplorer may be good in appearance but it’s just a piece of trash. It doesn’t have a valuable stuff in it. Only beginners are using Internet Explorer. The main reason behind the failure of Internet Explorer is that it is not as fast as Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla has released it’s 3.01 update recently. Firefox has some of the best and coolest features. The important aspect is that it provides many short programs and utilities called Addons free of char

elease of Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 is also not given them a boost.

World’s most popular Web Services company Google has entered this series by releasing it’s new Chrome – A web browser with minimum options. It has been released in 45 different languages and is now avaiable for free do

wnload in 100 countries. I’ve also downloaded it. It is 7 MB in size. Chrome is better than Microsoft IE and sail in the same boat as FIrefox when it comes to fastness and security. Chrome has built in Security properties. It also comes with Flash Player installed. It is not a built-in plugin in Firefox and Internet Explorer. It gives us a felling of minimal features when compared to firefox. It contains only minimal options.

Sometimes it is hanging up. So, Google has to improve it’s stability.

In the first round of the series, Internet Explorer is expected to die and Chrome is lagging behind Firefox due to minimal features.

I will now rate Firefox as No.1 and Chrome as No.2. IE remains a trash!

I was a child at that times when Navigator was the most popular browser available around. Actually Netscape was some piece of software that was more popular than its Microsoft equivalent, Internet Explorer (something that was really not likely to happen). This was my first feeling of hope and courage for being against this kind of a monopoly in software world (I was a little young to think like this but we may say that this was the seed =)). AOL will no longer give support to Netscape Navigator but the technology Navigator first used will be developing with Mozilla Firefox.

Različni spletni brskalniki so na voljo v paketu popolni sistem.

Jim’s WebLetter
(Now blogged at http://jimonline.wordpress.com)

Hi-ya friends and neighbors! It’s the first day of March, and as we rip off another page from the calendar, it’s time for the weekly Web review from my vantage point. And speaking of Vantage Point, have you seen the movie starring such notables as Dennis Quaid, William Hurt, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker and Sigourney Weaver? I give it a “two eyeballs open” rating as there is no “lull” in this action packed, best car chase scene I’ve ever seen thriller (yea, maybe even better than Bourne Ultimatum). The premise is you see 23 minutes of a scene from different perspectives. It’s well directed, the actors play believable roles, and the whole thing keeps you on the edge of your seat. There are, however, two times in the movie that the language could have been changed and it wouldn’t have hurt the story. I still don’t understand why writers have the need to put words like that into actors mouths. It’s not necessary. But it’s rated PG-13, and a very good story, none the less. http://www.vantagepoint-movie.com

Well, if you were one to finally decide to invest in Microsoft’s Vista for your computer, you should know MS has just slashed the price. The suggested price for Vista Ultimate drops to $219 from $299, while Home Premium falls to $129, from $159. If you have already made your purchase, take the receipt back and get them to give you some money back. Folks like Staples are known for rebating customers for things like this. Call me old fashioned, I still get all the work out of my XP Pro and Media Center systems that I need.

And speaking of systems in need, MAC users should be aware of a system error that leaves passwords on the memory sticks long after they are needed. In other words, someone can hack into your MAC and gain entrance into your private accounts (like bank, credit card, anything you have passwords for). The fix? Uh, they’re working on it …
http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9881870-7.html?tag=nl.e496

Well, Web friends, today is the day we all bid an internet icon a fond goodbye as this marks the day Netscape Navigator goes into obscurity. Now owned by AOL, the pioneer of Web travels will no longer be supported. I remember my first download of the browser and how I thought this was the wave of the future. It was more solid state than Internet Explorer (still is) and it was the single most used browser on the net. Now, it’s all but forgotten. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7270583.stm

How many of you have used the Ask.com search engine recently? Yea, that’s what I thought. Now comes the story that they’re looking to drop the Teoma search device and employ Google as their backbone. So, what’s the point in using Ask, if Google is all you need? http://www.techcrunch.com

Here’s a neat little Web App for folks to take notes on those little sticky notepads. I am a yellow sticky user, too, but all that is coming to an end with the new site called Jjot. Simply, you use it for jotting down notes. Use it to take down class or meeting notes, reminders, or Internet research. You can access your notes from any computer and easily share and email notes to other people. http://jjot.com/

Finally, here’s an online game that will be a real “kick” to soccer players worldwide (sorry, that’s footballers in the EU). 3-D Soccer has come to the web. This is much more fun than any sport game I’ve played thus far. Create your own team, play solitaire or with other teams. The quality of the graphics is the best yet. http://www.powerchallenge.com/

<===HuMoR===>
A Southwest flight was delayed at the gate after everyone had boarded.
The flight attendant said over the intercom, “We’re sorry for the delay. The machine that normally rips the handles off your luggage is broken, so we’re having to do it by hand. We should be finished and on our way shortly.”
(thanks, Jerry)
Joe heard a rumor that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all walked on water on their 21st birthdays.

So, on his 21st birthday, Joe and his good friend Brian headed out to the lake. “If they did it, I can too!” he insisted. When Joe and Brian arrived at the lake, they rented a boat and began paddling. When the got to the middle of the lake, Joe stepped off of the side of the boat … and almost drowned.

Furious and somewhat ashamed, he and Brian headed for home. When Joe arrived back at the family farm, he asked his grandmother for an explanation. “Grandma, why can I not walk on water like my father, and his father, and his father before him?”
The feeble old grandmother took Joe by the hands, looked into his eyes, and explained, “That’s because your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were born in January … you were born in July, dear.”
(thanks, Betty)
+++++++++++++++++++++
A lion woke up one morning feeling really rowdy and mean. He went out and cornered a small monkey and roared, “Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?”
The trembling monkey says, “You are, mighty lion!
Later, the lion confronts an ox and fiercely bellows, “Who is the mightiest of all jungle animals?”
The terrified ox stammers, “Oh great lion, you are the mightiest animal in the jungle!”
On a roll now, the lion swaggers up to an elephant and roars, “Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?”
Fast as lightning, the elephant snatches up the lion with his trunk, slams him against a tree half a dozen times leaving the lion feeling like it’d been run over by a safari wagon. The elephant then stomps on the lion till it looks like a corn tortilla and ambles away.
The lion lets out a moan of pain, lifts his head weakly and hollers after the elephant, “Just because you don’t know the answer, you don’t have to get so upset about it!”
(thanks, dad)
+++++++++++++++++++++
GROANER OF THE WEEK …
A man walks into a fish and chip shop with a fish under his arm.
“Do you have any fishcakes?” he asks.
“Yes, of course,” says the fish shop owner.
“Great,” replies the man, nodding at the fish under his arm, “It’s his birthday.”
(thanks again, dad)
====================
And that’s another week of the Web, JWL readers. Thank you for your time. Have a great weekend and til next, may God continue to bless you and keep you safe.
