No he encontrado a Netshare en Cydia.

According to Gizmodo, it seems that AT&T has given the promise of GPRS Tethering to the iPhone “soon”. What would this mean for the once alive application NetShare? Would Apple perhaps include an option in settings. Could this be a feature reserved for the final build of 2.2? No one can really be sure with Apple. But if AT&T was the only thing stopping Apple from including tethering, well, it’s about time.

When NetShare first came out, I did not download it because … bah, I do not remember why not. However, once it was pulled off the app store, I really wish I did.

I do not need tethering that often, in fact, I only rememeber wishing I had it once, but in the jailbreak world, once is enough.

So here you go folks. Go and get it. I’ve already downloaded and will be mucking with it tomorrow. Remember, jailbreak ( pwn’ers ) only.

As I continue pimping my jailbroken iPhone, I fired up cydia tonight to find out that pdaNet now has an app to assist me with tethering my 3G AT&T service to my mac.

After installing the app I had to restart my iPhone to enable pdaNet wireless rounter option. As you can see in the screenshot.

This is about the fourth tethering app for the iPhone, first was netshare, then it was iPhonemodem.com , iPhonemodem.de and a few other web instructions how to share your connection with your computer.

I have not tested pdaNet with my macbook yet but when I do, I’ll let you know. But one thing is for sure I’m not a fan of the little IE logo on my iPhone. lol

Also this is my first post with the blogpress iPhone app. At least it tells me it going to add a line of code to my post unlike iblogger in the previous post.

Let see how the picture layout works. After embeding a few picture from my library, I really like how it wraps the photos around the text. Now let’s see if I can find tags.

Anyone remember PodCaster? Probably not as Apple banned it because it let people download podcasts d

Anyone remember PodCaster? Probably not as Apple banned it because it let people download podcasts directly to their iPhone without going through iTunes – from the App Store!

What about NetShare? Maybe not because that application allowed the iPhone to be tethered (used as a wireless modem), encouraging some users to jailbreak (enable unofficial application installations) their phones and install the easy-to-use iPhoneModem tethering tool. Guess what… Apple banned that one too!

Well, they’ve done it again! Yet another useful app has been banned, this time because it is too similar to the built in iPhone Mail app.

MailWrangler, by Angelo DiNardi, allows users to add and access multiple Gmail accounts, simply directly loading and showing Gmail inside of an application. MailWrangler also lets users see threaded views and Google contacts, archive (quickly), star messages and get more functionality missing from Apple’s Mail app.

As an iPhone user, I am annoyed that I cannot get the best applications for my iPhone, just the ones developed by Apple (unless it turns your iPhone into a glowstick – really useful!!!).

What do you think about this?

Well time fly’s when your having fun and I have now had my iPhone for a month. I still love it

Well time fly’s when your having fun and I have now had my iPhone for a month. I still love it and it has wedged itself into my lifestyle permanently. Below are some of my experiences with the phone.

SMS / Keyboard Lag
Well after having a bit of trouble at first, I have gotten used to the onscreen keyboard and can smash out emails and text messages quite fast either one handed with my index finder or two handed with my thumbs. The predictive dictionary needed a bit of encouraging to say the F bomb instead of duck but that was resolved by typing it 3 times in notes and pressing the x on duck As reported around the internets I have experienced the keyboard lag, which seemed to appear quite random. Was quite hard to type a message while drunk with the keyboard lagging more than my brain . Even after installing the 2.0.1 software update that was meant to resolve that issue.

MMS – No big loss.
Everyone seems to still be complaining of the lack of MMS. I have not missed it one bit! Optus have a web based MMS service. Although it does not work on the iPhone browser, if someone sends me a MMS I get a SMS notification so that’s no big deal. Also a little known fact with Australian MMS, is that people with MMS enabled phones can send the MMS as an email for the same cost as sending it to another phone. So you can always tell your friends to email you the MMS! Problem solved!

Google Maps / GPS
This feature of the iPhone is awesome! I used it when I was visiting a client in Melbourne. Needed to park the car, so I typed Parking in Google Maps and all the car parks in the CBD were highlighted for me to choose. The AGPS seems to get a more accurate lock on me where I live when it drops back to 2G mode. This may be due to the 2G tower being closer to my house. All it needs now is street view.

Reception and 3G
Although I have not experienced any call dropouts, I have noticed at home my phone will revert back to Optus 2G when I am inside my house. This is something that has not phased me too much as the phone will connect to my home WiFi to access the internets.
Don’t get me started on the winging about the phone’s signal bars! Read this http://www.dansdata.com/gz084.htm.
Good, now you know that your Nokia is only telling you what your mobile carrier wants you to see. The difference here is that the firmware for the iPhone is fully managed by Apple. There are no carrier customised versions (e.g Telstra, AT&T, Vodafone)! This isn’t helped by their being no standard in measuring phone signal either!
Now there does appear to be an issue with it dropping back to 2G when there is good 3G around. It appears that Apple are working on a fix for this. Be patient, remember you did get the iPhone early in its release cycle, I’m sure you were expecting bugs.

App Store
So we have seen a couple of App’s come and go from the store. The most useful of the two Netshare was pulled, put back and pulled again! That really was a pity as that would have deterred a lot of people from jailbreaking their iPhone’s to achieve this. Why should the rest of the world suffer from AT&T sucking!
There have been quite a few simple free fun games appear. My favourite one would have to be Cube Runner. Such a good addictive game and its also free which makes it even better. I am annoyed with the fact that some app’s are available in the US iTunes store but not the Australian one. One example being WinAdmin, but there are quite a few more. I hope in particular that app gets to the Australian store.

Exchange Active Sync
Well the reason I have an iPhone. I have been extremely pleased with the implementation of Active Sync on the iPhone although there are a couple of things on my wish list!

Ability to invite people to meeting requests

Colours from the Outlook Calendar

Ability to customise the folder syncs

Ability to collapse folders

iPod
Having a Pioneer head unit in my car, I decided to purchase the iPod kit for it so I could control my iPhone from the head unit. The iPhone works great in this. Only problem is the obvious one with the FireWire charge pins. I’m hoping to get my hands on one of the adaptors to fix that once they are available. The sound with this dock in the car is awesome and is way better than using the headphone jack.
I also use the iPhone at the gym replacing my Sony HD Walkman. The sound quality of the iPod is the same if not better than my old Walkman. I love the fact that I have one device that can do so many things.

Conclusion
I think my iPhone has faired well for its first month of use. I still love using it and although there are a few things that still have room for improvement, I am not too fussed as this was expected with any new product.

We’ve finally gotten in contact with Apple. Looks like the lack of communication was due to automated e-mail systems being employed on both ends, which resulted in e-mails being lost in transit. We’re working with Apple to get NetShare back up on the AppStore.

Buone vacanze!!

I recently wrote Null River to inquire where the iPhone application NetShare went (For those of you

I recently wrote Null River to inquire where the iPhone application NetShare went (For those of you not familar with the NetShare story: NetShare is an iPhone tethering application that allows users to use their iPhone’s internet connection on their personal computer. It was originally posted in the application store on August 1st, was removed by Apple without warning, was readded later that day, then a few hours later it was removed and never seen again). Here is the response I received:

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry, a lot of users are wondering what’s going on with NetShare.

As of writing it is not available in any country on Apple’s AppStore — Apple has removed it from sale temporarily. Apple is working with us to get NetShare back onto the store as soon as possible. We will be posting updates on this at our web site: http://www.nullriver.com

If you use an RSS Reader such as Apple Safari or Apple Mail you can also keep subscribe to our RSS News feed here: feed://www.nullriver.com/rss

–

NetShare can be used with any software that supports SOCKS 5 Proxies. This includes Mac, Windows XP, Vista, Linux and many other operating systems and devices. We are working on guides to help setup with common configurations. In general however, most configurations are already covered online.

For help with Windows XP:
http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-connect-netshare-to-win-xp-to-use-your-iphone-s-3g-web-225037/

For help with Vista:
http://www.shahine.com/omar/HowToTetherYourIPhoneToVistaIn5EasySteps.aspx

And for Mac OSX Users Apple Insider have put together a 10 step guide:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/08/01/ten_step_guide_to_sharing_your_iphones_connection_with_netshare.html

We have a support section on our website which we hope to expand to cover more issues in future:
http://www.nullriver.com/support/contact/faqs?supportProductId=netshare

Based on NetShare’s answer it is fairly obvious that AT&T simply does not want users to have the ability to tether their phones. I’m sure in the next few weeks the app will make a re-apperance, and all users will have to pay AT&T some exuberant fee to be able to use the tethering feature (AT&T users who have other model phones that support the tethering ability have to pay an extra $30 a month to be able to use it).

NetShare’s story brings up a few interesting points including Apple’s ability to completely control which applications users can and cannot use on their phones (whether or not the application violates Apple’s & AT&T’s terms of use as NetShare DID NOT). Not only can Apple remove applications without warning from the store, but they can also remotely disable apps that are already installed on your phone. If anyone was able to snag NetShare before it was pulled, I’d love to know:

If it still works

If it does not work, did you get reimbursed?

After the MobileMe debacle and the iPhone 3G in-store activation fiasco, now Apple is giving iPhone Apps developers the silent treatment……

Come on Apple, what gives???

For a long time Apple supporter and dare I say it, Fanboy, I am starting to get a sick feeling in my gut about the direction Apple seems to be going.

We have all had run-ins with Apple’s “customer service”. I personally spent three days on the phone trying to exchange an 24″ iMac after two previous ones were defective. (I gave up and got a MacPro)

But what is going on now? This behavior is not the Apple that I know, or thought I knew. Apple has made lots of mistakes in the past along with lots of amazing products, software and hardware. When something went wrong, they eventually took the blame and corrected the problem, at their expense.(usually)

In the last few months, it seems Apple is hiding behind their huge wall of cash, oblivious to what we, the consumers, are going through.

Enough of my rant, here is what nullriver is going through – Posted on their site today:

“NETSHARE STATUS REPORT:

We still haven’t gotten any answer from Apple as to why NetShare was removed from the App Store. Calls to ADC yield wait times of a few hours and we’re forced to give up. E-mails to various contacts at Apple and the developer program have also given us no response. Is this acceptable business practice? We don’t think so. When an application fails to be approved or even more importantly so, when an application gets removed from sale, Apple should be required to provide a valid reason.”

I agree with Giles Turnbull from tuaw, He writes: “What makes this more extraordinary is that developers of App Store products are not just developers; they are an income stream. Thirty per cent of the money we pay for every app goes directly to Apple, that’s how the App Store works.

It’s a deal, and deals work in two directions. Both sides get something. In this case, Apple gets software to offer to users of its exciting new platform. And the developers get access to a secure online distribution system, including payment processing, hosting, everything they need to sell their work.

Deals make partnerships, and partnerships (even unequal 30/70 ones) ought to work both ways. Apple expects (and has a right to expect) developers to behave themselves and act within the rules it has laid down. But in return, developers expect (and have every right to expect) Apple to be a responsible, indeed responsive store owner. At the very least, they have the right to know whether or not Apple considers their work suitable for sale in the Store, and to be told why it has been withdrawn. Then reinstated. Then withdrawn again. And so on.”

A deal is a deal! Come on Apple you are better than that!

In rete c’è incazzatura.

In USA AT&T offre accesso illimitato a internet.

Okay, now this is just plain weird. Nullriver’s NetShare utility for tethering iPhones to computers as a wireless modem appeared on Apple’s App Store, then disappeared–and then resurfaced. That was odd enough. But now…it’s gone again.

Nullriver says that Apple pulled it again, without explanation. I suppose it’s possible that it’ll mysteriously return again, but at this point I think it’s more likely that it’ll remain an application non grata until and unless AT&T formalizes tethering as a legitimate iPhone use. Which, as I keep saying, I hope they’ll do–and it doesn’t seem unthinkable that they will, since other AT&T phones get that option.

Meanwhile, judging from the copy of NetShare that I managed to buy during one of its windows of availability, I’m not heartbroken that this particular iPhone tethering app keeps coming and going…

Curiouser and curiouser. Yesterday, a $10 iPhone utility from Nullriver called NetShare showed up in

Curiouser and curiouser. Yesterday, a $10 iPhone utility from Nullriver called NetShare showed up in Apple’s App Store. It promised to let you share your iPhone’s wireless data service with a computer via the computer’s Wi-Fi connection, giving you the potential to get online in places where you can’t find a hotspot. Shortly after it appeared in the App Store, it disappeared; that was less surprising than the fact it was there in the first place, since AT&T offers no official sanction for using your iPhone as a modem.

Today? NetShare is back in the App Store. I’ve seen no official word from Apple, AT&T, or Nullriver about what’s going on here, and whether using NetShare is okay, not okay, or in some fuzzy area in between. I’ve pined for the ability to tether my notebook to my phone’s modem ever since I dumped my AT&T Tilt phone for an iPhone 3G, though, so I downloaded, configured, and tried NetShare as fast as I could.

I’ve given it only a quick try so far, not an extensive trial. For a few minutes I was up and running, using Safari to surf the Web (including YouTube) at decent speed and chatting on iChat. That was a kick. But other than that, NetShare has been kind of a pain–it’s safe to say it’s not the seamless iPhone tethering solution I’ve been looking for and would happily pay for.

NetShare works by setting up a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi network between your Mac (Windows support is promised soon) and the iPhone, then using proxy access to let your Mac piggyback on the iPhone’s internet connection. This requires some futzing around with network settings on both the iPhone and the Mac; Nullriver provides instructions, but they’re confusing in some places and simply wrong in others, and they’re far from complete. They also don’t mention the fact that they only get you as far as making Safari and iChat work; I had to reconfigure Flock to use NetShare’s proxy myself.

(Side note: A forum member over at MacRumors has provided instructions for using NetShare that are much better than Nullriver’s.)

Every time my iPhone went into sleep mode, my network connection died. I reconnected only by randomly fiddling with network settings and never figured out what I did that would get the connection working again. And when I was done testing and wanted to get back on my Wi-Fi network, I had to undo some of the settings that NetShare required me to change.

In short, if you’re a geek with a need for a way to connect a Mac via iPhone for emergency use, NetShare might fit the bill. But I found it way too much of a hassle to contemplate using it very often, even if AT&T were to give NetShare its blessings.

The good news: NetShare proves that there’s no technical reason why an iPhone can’t double as a modem, and the fact that it’s on the App Store would seem to suggest that it’s not unthinkable that a more polished tethering application along the lines of June Fabrics’ PdaNet couldn’t be approved by Apple and at least grudgingly accepted by AT&T.

But I say it again: If a future upgrade to the iPhone OS had some sort of official “Tether to Computer” option, as my Tilt did, I’d cheerfully fork over money to AT&T.

And I’d love to learn exactly what the deal is with NetShare’s appearance, disappearance, and reappearance, and whether Apple is really selling a piece of software that AT&T doesn’t want you to run…

One of the groundbreaking differences between the iPhone and all other cellular phones is the App Store. You can bet that RIM, Nokia, et al are hard at work on a similar system.

Here’s the app’s I’ve got loaded today:

Flashlight – Turns out to be fairly useful when lost in the dark.

Bloomberg – more detailed stock info than the built-in app.

Monkeyball – Fun, but the motion sensing is not well done. These guys should talk to the Labyrinth guys to see how to do motion sensing properly.

Shazam – This is just cool.

Weatherbug – OK app. Better weather forcasts than the built-in weather app.

WordPress – cool – but it would be pretty difficult to type a REAL blog entry here.

WritingPad – Interesting to see people inventing new input paradigms. This one is so so.

Remote – Cool, but it would be great if it worked with FrontRow on my TV’s Mac Mini.

Jott – Jott is a very cool service, and this app is well done.

AirMe – I LOVE what this app SHOULD do, if ONLY it did it reliably. I’m hoping they release a new version soon.

Labyrinth – THE COOLEST APP. This is what I show people when they wonder what the fuss is about.

TouchCalc – OK.

SpeakEasy – Nice audio recorder but doesn’t upload yet – which is functionality I’d love.

Tuner – Nice to have a radio in your phone.

AccuFuel – Bit of a pain to enter the fuel info, and a pain to configure. Km’s vs Miles vs liters per km, etc.

ezimba – Interesting. The basic need I had was to crop photos, and I couldn’t find it after quite a bit of searching. I know it MUST be there…

eReader – I had an account already so this was a no-brainer. I WISH I could override the motion sensor so I could read while lying in bed…

VNC – Cool just because you can.

Enigmo – Nicely done app. Another showcase app.

Holdem – I’m not into poker enough to appreciate this app.

Dice Bag – This app sucks. I was hoping for a nice simulation of dice rolling. All it does is display a number in the corner of the screen. TRY HARDER GUYS.

Crash Cart – Cool. My kids love this app – but the motions sensing is not as nice as I’d like to see.

OneTap – Very nice movie finder. Lots of nice features.

Remember The Milk – Not strictly an iPhone app, but SO WELL DONE that I’m including it. Nice.

Scrabble – I play this more than anything. The first version sucked HUGELY and crashed EVERY TIME you used it. The recent update is much improved. Also, they’ve improved the load time – but it’s still spending WAY TOO LONG showing me logos and startup screens.

Audio Rec. Guitar Toolkit – Nice app.

WeightTrack – Nice enough – but my phone isn’t near my scale.

NetShare – I’m AMAZED this is allowed, and that this works. I downloaded it immediately, before it’s deleted from the App Store. Hopefully Rogers can’t detect that I’m using this (of course, I never do.)

Exposure – Nice app – I wish I could upload from the phone to Flickr using this.

Sketches – It would be nice to be able to have larger drawing surfaces. Nicely done.
