After nearly being bored to death by the immensely overrated Where the Wild Things Are, the most recent field trip into the BNE was salvaged by good food. It seems that nothing matters when you have something tasty to slide down your gullet.

There was also an impromptu visit to the newly opened Culture Kings and catchup with our friends at Apartment. We had a go at snapping some pics at Apartment but weren’t happy with the results so we’ll bring you a proper pile of shots next time we’re around that neck of the woods. Culture Kings on the other hand… we’ll leave you to make up your own minds about why we wont be featuring them on this site.

Little Singapore – Sunny Bank Hills

Gotta love Asians and their random cartoon characters, this lemon ice tea was made more awesome by the mob of badass ice cube gangsters on the lid.

First up was Roti with Chicken Curry. This had the tell tale signs of a good curry with a nice ripple of oil on top and really fragrant and just the sort of stuff that makes you over eat, awesomely tasty finger food that you simply cannot eat too much of, but that didn’t stop big T from polishing it off.

The big T decided to dig into the misleadingly named Dry Noodles with Chicken and Prawns, which turned out to be anything but dry and was a text book noodle and broth dish, not worth trying to be frank.

Meanwhile the smaller brethren opted for the Singapore Style Fried Fish, which is basically like the KFC of the sea. Although a bit lacking on its own the sweet chilli sauce was too sweet adn syrupy but the dish was rescued by some nice Pickled Chillis and Sambal. Mainly I was just glad I didn’t have those lame dry noodles.

Freestyle Tout – West End

To round out the evening we headed to Freestyle Tout in the Westend for a G&T and the Sorbet Supremo which actually kicked arse, even with the somo aura of 2 dudes sharing a sorbet desert.

All-in-all, aside from the bitter disappointment of the movie, a chilled night filled with good food and conversation. Now time to get prepped for next Saturday with the release of the Skippy New Balance at Laced and Sneak and Destroy’s One Offs show. Now that should be entertaining.

Concepts, in Cambridge, MA got together with New Balance to create the “Freedon Trail” Collection. It features two silhouettes: the classic 1500 sneaker and the first-ever 875 boot (pictured here).

The 875 is a brand new style launched to the public for the first time via the Concepts Collection. The boot was designed for comfort and durability. The sole unit includes New Balance Rollbar™ technology for maximum support and stability. Additionally, NB designers used a PU Wedge in the heel (similar to the wedge that offers superior support in the NB 993) and compression molded EVA in the forefoot. The 875 features a full grain leather upper, pigskin leather lining, and embossed tongue tag.

Its always nice to see new styles being introduced with store colabs. The 875 came out really nice and are perfect for the season. December 5 marks the release of Sneaker Freaker’s “Skippy” 850. These babies feature gen-yoo-ine kangaroo leather on the toe and a green/gold hits. Doesn’t get much more patriotic than that… strewth! New Balance has been making some major waves this year with some quality projects only they could bring you. So it comes to no surprise that Hanon picks NB to work on an up coming three way project which also includes the company Eschler (this is not the first time Hanon works with NB). They call it the “Bionic Project“. The idea of the project is to explore possibilities of combining a performance fabric, to one of the iconic NB shoes.

This latest project helmed by Hanon will incorporate innovative fabrics by Eschler of Switzerland. Eschler is known for manufacturing state of the art textiles for the outdoor and the sports industry. The fabric they will be using is called Ceramic E3+; Ceramic E3+ is printed with a polyurethane ceramic coating and embedded with diamond hard particles. The material is lightweight, water resistant, breathable and extremely durable.

The trend towards using finer and softer fabrics in the production of outdoor wear contradicts the clothing’s practical specifications which require robustness and durability. Eschler E3+ pushes these boundaries as the ceramic printed fabric offers the perfect synergy for both wearing comfort and resistance to mechanical wear.

Fabric Characteristics

• Significantly higher wear and abrasion resistance than regular fabrics.
• Lightweight performance fabric. Breathable and weather resistant.
• Polyurethane based coating embedded with diamond hard ceramics particles.

There will be two shoes that compromise the Bionic Project. Each model will have a fully customizable upper that will feature distinct details unique to the release. Both of these models will be constructed at the world famous New Balance Flimby Factory using only premium materials. These will be unveiled in December.

Yes, New Balance made a sneaker that you will have to spend around 200+ dollars (after taxes… that is if your state actually collects sales taxes). I guess this is priced for the serious runner and I will admit it just makes me curious as to how comfortable it is to charge so much.

One of the occupational hazards for bloggers dealing with future trends and products is that sometimes you get hung up on something that will only be released next season or later, while you want it NOW. Já falamos sobre isso, o rock está na moda, mas claro, a rockeira de boutique, que talvez nem ouça rock de verdade, mas para quem curte rock mesmo, em Sampa tem um lugar específico para isso, a Galeria do Rock.

Tem um visual bem anos 50, 60, o que deixa a visita ainda mais interessante, sim, fica no centrão de São Paulo, na Rua 24 de maio, 62, tem uma frequência diferente, dependendo do horário claro, mas a maioria é aquela moçada que só se veste de preto, camiseta de banda, alguns “emos”.

Choosing a good quality shoe need not be expensive.  The 681 from New Balance in an entry level running shoe that not only looks good, it also performs well.

First Glance

At first glance the 681 looks good and upon closer inspection you’ll notice the Abzorb cushioning is also placed in the forefoot area.  The shape of its sole is also unique that it seems to aide forward movement especially for forefoot strike runners.  You can’t really tell that it is an entry-level shoe until you’re reminded when you see the insole.

The Test

I tested this first walking a few kilometers to and from a nearby running specialty store and it passed with flying colors.  The shoe fits well and it very comfortable.  Cushioning was sufficient and is breathable enough.  Things changed when I finally tested it for a seven kilometer test run—you immediately feel the slightly narrower front as you feel your fingers rub on its sides.  Coming from Asics Kayano I can feel the difference with the cushioning which was sufficient although I wouldn’t recommend it for runs longer than 10K or exceeding an hour.  It’s also not as bendable as other running shoes but it’s very negligible.  On the good side though the slightly concaved shape of the front sole really aide runners with forefoot strike.

Conclusion

New Balance 681 is a very comfortable shoe that looks good and fits well.  It provides good cushioning not just in the heel but also in the forefoot and it sole is shaped to aide forefoot runners.  The narrow front may be its biggest fault making it unsuitable for long runs, but for casual use or easy runs it fits well.  Overall this is a good shoe for those 5K or even 10K runs, or simply for just walking around.  This shoe may have been designed for those who just started running and didn’t want to risk spending a huge sum, or those looking for some affordable everyday good trainers.
