It’s Thursday 15th January 2009, and I’m sitting in my underwear playing Football Manager. I’m doing

It’s Thursday 15th January 2009, and I’m sitting in my underwear playing Football Manager. I’m doing this because the previous day, I finished my exams for semester one, and have nothing better to do. It’s not that they were particularly draining or important. I figured I had scraped through History of Latin America by virtue of the only topic I knew anything about appearing on the exam paper, while translation had been a ‘morceau de pipi’ (piece of piss, for those not in the know). I was just playing for the sake of it, really. Football Manager is a horrible game. It wastes away hours of your life in frustration as your virtual players ignore you and your virtual club fucks you about. Even better, the game is kind enough to tell you exactly how many days, hours and minutes you have wasted on it every time you load a saved file. It also offers helpful, sarcastic tips, such as “time to change your underwear”. Well, I wasn’t going to be dictated to by a computer game. So there I was, sat in my dirty underwear, playing a computer game I was coming to hate, when my phone vibrated. This was not in any way an exciting event. Normally, it meant a text from one of four people: my mum, my dad, the phone company, or Louise, a French girl I had had an interest in. But to my mild surprise, it was from none of those candidates. It was from Dave, a friend of mine from school, saying he would be in Lyon the next day, and asking if I would be free to come out for a drink. The two of us had been at school together and although we’d never been massively close, we got on really well and I considered him a good mate. Like my entire group of friends, he had a nerdy side, sharing my passion for history and jokes of dubious taste. He studied History, combined with Politics, at York University, and was taking an Erasmus year in the town of Clermont Ferrand, not far from Lyon. Nonetheless, when I read his text, I wasn’t massively keen. For starters, going out would mean getting dressed, which I was dead against. But weighing more heavily on my mind was the fact that myself and my mate Andy were going travelling on Sunday morning, heading first to Barcelona, and then making our way back to Lyon through the south of France. Andy was a friend of mine from Bristol who was living in the same halls as me. Back in the UK, we had worked together on French projects before, but outside of class we would both have preferred to avoid each other. Nothing personal, we just had different friends and didn’t really know each other. I remember in particular the Languages Ball the summer before, where I had ended up tagging onto Andy’s group due to having only bought my ticket in order to go with a girl who would later turn me down. An awkward night was had by all. But since we had been living together, we found we had a lot in common, in particular a virulent cynical streak, and became good friends. I was pretty excited about going travelling, and wanted to save as much money as I could for it, hence my lack of enthusiasm when Dave told me of his plans. Nonetheless, when a mate says he’s coming to your town, you can’t really sack him off, so I replied to Dave saying that I would be up for a drink. I asked Andy if he fancied coming too – I think his initial reply was something along the lines of “I didn’t know you had any friends”, or something equally twattish. He also appeared loath to leave his Football Manager game (both of us were addicted), but I was able to persuade him to come out for a quick drink. So at around 6.30pm, we set off to meet Dave at a bar in town called Ninkasi. It was a favourite of mine, due to the fact that they brewed their own beers which were like nectar from heaven, or at the very least, good beer. So the three of us got a pitcher of Ambrée, and sat and chatted. Mostly it was me and Dave catching up, and sharing stories of France; Andy later told me he was incredibly bored for most of the time, and wished Dave would shut up. While we were there, Dave mentioned that three friends from Clermont Ferrand had come with him, but were back at the hostel. They were, however, planning on going out later – I’d be up for coming out, wouldn’t I? At the time, the answer was ‘No, not really’, as I said to Andy while Dave was in the toilet. I was trying to work out how I could bail on him. But we went back to the hostel, where Dave said we could do some pre-drinking, and I searched for excuses. When we arrived at the youth hostel, it became clear that it was not a viable pre-drinking destination: having stayed there myself, I knew alcohol wasn’t allowed in the rooms, and the bloke on the desk wouldn’t let me and Andy up to Dave’s room as we weren’t guests. So Dave suggested we go to my halls to drink, which weren’t far away, and I had no choice but to agree. He went to fetch his friends, and I stood around the reception of the hostel, feeling superior to the hordes of gap-yearers and traveller wankers. At this point, I had no idea who Dave’s friends were; I only knew that they were on Erasmus too at Clermont Ferrand. I suppose what I’m trying to say, is that I was expecting three blokes to appear. Instead, he came back with two girls and a morose looking guy, and did the normal introductions. There was Katie, a hyperactive tiny little Irish girl. The morose guy was apparently called Tom – his voice matched his appearance. And there was Jen. I’m not going to launch into a description of her now, as though I saw her and fell in love on the spot, because I didn’t. At the time she didn’t really register with me that much. As we set off up the hill to my halls, me and Dave left the others behind as we carried on chatting and went on ahead.

After I’d received my rejection from Jen, I spent most of Monday in a sort of daze. Almost the first

After I’d received my rejection from Jen, I spent most of Monday in a sort of daze. Almost the first thing I did was log onto iTunes and buy the album ‘Jane Doe’ by Converge. The last time I listened to Converge was when I had had a minor identity crisis/nervous breakdown the year before. The music can best be described in one word as ‘angry’. A very angry man, screaming over walls of angry guitars, bass and drums for 45 angry minutes. It is pain, anger and suffering distilled into music. Even better, this particular album was written exclusively about the vocalist’s (I refrain from saying singer) relationship break-up. As such, it is the perfect album for emotional turmoil. I also bought some other music – my reflex action in such situations is to retreat into the protective shell of music and spending money. But this music, I am less proud of. I bought an album by a band called Matchbook Romance. It was written about a break-up too. But it’s pop-punk. Or even worse, emo. Emo is a dirty word to most serious music fans. It used to be a dirty word to me. My 17-year-old self was a terrible music snob, and full-on hypocrite. I would mercilessly insult anyone who listened to Panic! At The Disco, or Fall Out Boy, and yet in private I had a sneaking liking for these bands. They’ve always been guilty pleasures for me; stick a half-decent pop melody over some power chords and then sing about a girl and there’s a good chance I’ll listen, even if I won’t admit to it. Since I met Jen, this sneaking enjoyment has become full-on, obvious love. A few weeks after I first met her and realised how I felt, I bought a New Found Glory album. And then another. I haven’t stopped listening to them since. I can’t help it; it’s like a disease that I can’t shake off. They’re catchy, cathartic, and bouncy, with great lyrics that speak to the wounded teenager in me. The fact that they are grown men, slightly older than me, but definitely not teenagers, only makes it better. Or worse. Neither does the fact that I am no longer a teenager bother me in the slightest. You see, I have a theory as to why people above the age of 21 don’t listen to pop-punk and emo. Theory seems too grandiose a word, actually, for an idea that popped into me head while walking home, half-cut. But I name it such nonetheless. I’d like to believe that people lose the need for pop-punk when they’re older, because their lives become more settled. They find a girl, and they’re able to keep them. They learn to move on, they learn not to torture themselves over women. They learn from the mistakes of their younger selves. All this would be very comforting, if it were true. But the divorce rate would beg to differ, as would the people in their 20s that I know who have been through horrible break-ups or are alone. People don’t lose their need for pop-punk. For all I know, they carry on listening to it in secret, as a guilty pleasure. But for the most part, they wean themselves off it, out of guilt for their listening habits. Coolness never ceases to be important, no matter what you’re told, and it’s difficult to maintain an image of being a successful, happy 20-something when you’re blasting out ‘My Friends Over You’ from your Bang & Olufsen. I have no such concerns. I have never been cool, or had people believe that I was. So I can listen to whatever the hell music I want. So there.

The gap between the years 2000 and 2010 seems like a good time for me to write about my favourite al

The gap between the years 2000 and 2010 seems like a good time for me to write about my favourite albums of the decade. These also happen to be the years that I went from the angst ridden age of 16 to the slightly (emphasis on slightly) maturer age of 26. It also provides me with a great opportunity to show you that my taste in music is probably not the same as yours (and obviously not as good), and that my list isn’t eclectic in the slightest.

I have fallen in love with hundreds of albums in the past ten years so to name only ten of them is an extremely difficult task. However, I’ve done it and if you’d like a rough idea of my top artists over the last few years, you can take a gander at my last.fm page.

The following list includes ten albums that for me, have either; strongly influenced me in different ways, remain nostalgic and still spark brilliant memories of growing up or simply, still remain extremely enjoyable for me to listen to from start to finish. In fact, these are the factors that helped make my final decision a hell of a lot easier. Oh and don’t expect any of these albums to appear in any other list of ‘Great albums from the last decade’. It just wouldn’t happen…

So let’s get on with it. (Beware – I WILL go over the top when I write about my number 1)

#10. Fenix TX – Lechuza

The number ‘10′ spot was the hardest spot for me to fill, and if I’m honest I’m still not sure what should have truly gone here. This album was released whilst I was in the sixth form and it was usually on repeat during my I.T lessons via my trusty mini-disc player. The eleven tracks on Lechuza have a bit of everything, from angst to emotional with some humour and fun to boot. I guess this albums lasting power could have been due to the fact, the band split up a couple of years afterwards, but I honestly still get enjoyment from it and am now itching to see these guys live once more. I’m pretty certain that the inclusion of ‘Lechuza’ in this list will surprise almost everyone, but I feel it rightly deserves its place in my personal top ten.

#9. Less Than Jake – Borders & Boundaries

So here’s the token ska-punk inclusion in my list. I have to admit I have gone off ska in general an awful lot over the past couple of years but Less Than Jake will always be welcome in my collection with open arms. Borders and Boundaries is another album that spent A LOT of time making friends with that trusty mini-disc player of mine. It’s an album that worked for me all year round and it provided so much fun it’s unreal. It mainly reminds me of bus journeys and walks to work, so technically it shouldn’t be great based on the memories, but the fact is, those bus journeys and walks to work were really great thanks to my favourite Less Than Jake album. Admittedly it doesn’t get played as much these days, but I think I’ve unfairly abandoned it. So 22 tracks of ska-punk fun help to earn Borders and Boundaries the #9 spot.

#8. Coheed & Cambria – In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3

Ok, this is getting a bit harder now. I have the next 8 albums decided upon, but I’m putting them into order as I go. I was slightly late getting into Coheed & Cambria, and probably discovered this album about a six months after its release in 2004. This album is probably one of the few in my top ten that took a while to grow on me, but once it did I’d discovered a new favourite band. At the time of writing this the band have four albums and this remains my favourite by a substantial way. It also introduced me to a new genre of music that I hadn’t really given the time of day prior to discovering number eight in my top ten. Prog-Rock, punk rock, pop and t’riffz all in one near perfect album. That’ll slot it nicely into my list. Thanks Coheed.

#7. Saves The Day – Stay What You Are

So number seven in my list brings me to a band that I’ve never really loved quite as much since the release of this album in 2001. This album is mainly in my list for the memories it conjures up as a ‘just discovered alcohol’ eighteen year old ‘yoof’. I can recall many drunken nights where me and my good friend Greg would recite the dark lyrics off of this album whilst wandering the well known streets of my home town slightly inebriated. ‘Stay What You Are’ is truly host to many anthems of ‘the best years of my life’ and to this day I continue to enjoy them just as much as I did eight years ago. I keep worrying that this album shouldn’t be here, but the more I think about it, the more I realise it still brings a huge smile to my face on every listen. Yeah it’ll definitely remain in my list at number seven.

#6. Jimmy Eat World – Jimmy Eat World (Bleed American)

Jimmy Eat World are easily one of my top three favourite bands from the last decade. Every album I own by them could have probably been here if I’m honest. The reason I picked this one however, was because 1) It’s the first one I owned (and consequently fell in love with) and 2) It easily owns the nostalgia factor over any of the others. The catchy pop rock from start to finish on this album is as fresh to me now as it was the first time I heard it. I’m starting to realise there is a theme of anthems helping these albums into my top ten list, but that’s what it’s all abut for me. The anthems that moulded me into who I am today and were with me through both good times and bad. A little cheesy? Maybe! But I’m not writing the popular classic albums of the last decade list am I now.

#5. Brand New – Deja Entendu

You know, if I had written this list two years earlier, I’m certain that this album would have been a bit higher up the list. In fact it would easily have been number one at one stage in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I still adore it but I just can’t love it as much as I once did. If listening to an album on repeat too many times could break your CD Player then this album would have done just that. Brilliantly written songs, that you can’t necessarily relate to, but they were so good you didn’t need to. I don’t really know why I’m talking in past tense because to this day they still are really good and that’s why it made it into my top five. If you knew me five years ago, the chances are you heard me harping on about how this was the best album since your favourite album of all time. Unfortunately, not many people agreed.

#4. New Found Glory – New Found Glory

I’ve sort of surprised myself here, because I didn’t really expect New Found Glory to rank so highly in the list. I’m unashamedly a huge fan of pop-punk, a genre my peers will say I should have grown out of when I hit the 21 mark, but… I haven’t. This is an album I discovered shortly after Blink182’s album ‘Enema of The State’ (which was painfully released before 2000) and included some of the biggest ‘tunes’ for an eighteen year old who was on the verge of becoming a punk rocker. All the songs on this album are also about girls, and for an eighteen year old me, it was easy to relate to. I can still put this album on and sing along to every single word. My neighbours probably think I’m singing my heart out to busted, but little do they know it’s actually my fourth best album from the last decade. An album that earns it’s place easily. An album that I’ll always have on my ipod.

#3. Alexisonfire – Watch Out

It would appear that most of my list isn’t really the last decade at all. It’s mainly albums from around 2000-2004 and this is no exception. Although it was probably around 2005/6 I actually discovered it. This album for me can do no wrong. I love it from start to finish. Obviously I have my favourite tracks on ‘Watch Out’ but I love every single track on this album. This is probably the heaviest album on my list, but it does have a bit of everything. I’d be prepared to bet this is one of my ‘most listened to’ albums in my life and actually contains a couple of songs that would certainly be on my top ten songs of the decade list. Well written lyrics, well written music and some of the best vocals you’ll ever hear (Dallas Green *ahem*) and I have myself an album that I have no hesitation to put in my top three of this decade.

#2. Frank Turner – Sleep Is For The Week

Anyone that knows me probably saw this coming. Frank Turner has quickly become my favourite song writer of the last decade. I literally could have put any of his albums in this spot, because I love them all but I chose this one for a couple of reasons. I can relate to the lyrics a bit too much to describe my life over the last ten years. This sort of makes it perfect for this list too. Also whenever I see Frank live, I always get an amazing feeling when he plays anything from ‘Sleep Is For The Week’. More-so than any other material. This album helped shoot Frank Turner to the top of my played artists list on my last.fm account, and as a recent discovery that’s pretty good going. I could sing my praises for this album and Frank Turner for another 2000 words, but I guess I’ll spare you the boredom. Just know this was always going to be in the #2 spot.

#1. The Movielife – This Time Next Year

I’m laughing to myself as I fill in the spot for my number one album of the decade. I can hear 90% of the people reading this article going ‘Who?’. Some of you are probably even a little baffled or disappointed. Just hear me out. This album – this band were always going to be here. If you asked me in the year 2000 to state my favourite album I would have said this one. Ask me now? You get the same answer. This album single-handedly defines the last decade of my life. It’s at least played a couple of times a month and has been for the last ten years. It’s the album that made me want to start a band. It even played a hand it me purchasing my first guitar (although Green Day and Blink182 also deserve some credit for that). I very rarely get excited about seeing a band live for the first time, as I did when I first saw The Movielife live. It’s influenced me in so many ways, and even probably convinced me I was punk rock back in the day. Unfortunately the band split a few years after this album was released and I was absolutely gutted. However, last year I got to see a sort of re-union and it was the best gig of my life. This album sits above any other album I own. Its not musically genius, it’s not ground breaking and you probably won’t like it, but to me it’s everything. To me it’s my number one album of the last decade.

So there you go. If you’ve made it this far I congratulate you. If you’ve skimmed it, then I don’t blame you, but you might need to read it to understand why my list is so shocking. If you think my list is crap then I probably think the same about yours. That’s why it’s my list. Oh and I’d also like to list some albums below that could just have easily been in this list. Now I’m finished I’m even a bit confused as to why some of them weren’t.

Finch – What It Is To Burn

Lost Prophets – The Fake Sound of Progress

“And I’d give up forever to touch you ‘Cause I know that you feel me somehow You

“And I’d give up forever to touch you
‘Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You’re the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be
And I don’t want to go home right now”–

I’d waste all my time so I could be close to him simply because I think something might happen. I think he’s the closest to true love I’ll ever find, which is a mistake. And when I have to leave him, I feel sad. When I watch him walk away from band practice, a part of me walks away, too.

“And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
‘Cause sooner or later it’s over
I just don’t want to miss you tonight”-

When I’m around him, I’m very self-conscious and I pick up every little detail about everything he does. But, sooner or later, I have to leave him, and I’ll be stuck thinking about him all night. And I feel bad because I could never date him without Katie murdering me. And she could never date him without me feeling especially desolate.

“And I don’t want the world to see me
‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am”-

I don’t want everyone to see me when I’m thinking of him, or when I see him and blush or giggle. They wouldn’t understand. They wouldn’t see why I like him. To them, he is just another guy in the background. At the same time, when hearts are made to be broken, I don’t want him to get too close to me. I just want him to know my name and not hurt me.

“And you can’t fight the tears that ain’t coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
And you bleed just to know you’re alive”-

He doesn’t know me, so he can’t cry over me. And he doesn’t know that I see truth in what he says even though it doesn’t mean anything. However, when everything is so dramatic around me, I keep hurting to know I’m still living in the present.

I love this song! It’s so amazing. One of my favorite songs. It’s extremely meaningful. Check it out!

Kitsune Maison 8 will be released on November 30. This mix CD is a gem including tracks and remixes from the likes of Delphic, Midnight Juggernauts, Chew Lips, French Horn Rebellion and The Drums, proving, as usual, that the label knowq their shizzle and put these CDs out merely to reiterate the fact that they are le bomb.

http://www.myspace.com/wefelltoearth will be the lucky buggers to support one of the year’s most hyped bands, The Big Pink.

Winter is upon us and so the tootsies are feeling sad. Want to look stylish without getting frostbite? Our new favourite purveyors of footwear are HUDSON. Their new range is pretty much salivate-worthy; from men’s boots and brogues to delicious women’s ankle boots with Westwood inspired pirate straps and sexy two-tone brogues with cutesy bows… yes, we’re sold.

http://hudsonshoes.com/hudson.html

Make up is addictive. Ask any of our girls and they’ll tell you they have truckloads of the stuff. Lipgloss and eyeshadows and lipsticks are the main purchase. At least one a week. Easy. It’s been a solid fave for some time because Sleek MakeUp not only cater perfectly for those with darker skin tones, but they do the BEST eyeshadows in the world. We mega adore their EYE DUST which not only goes on like a dream but stays on like a bastard. Their metallic shades in rust, gold, and silver go on smoothly and with a super block coverage it actually looks like your eyelids are ready to dazzle the universe.

You can get the range at Superdrug and it won’t break the bank. Even better.

normally, i wouldn’t be sitting on wwm at 12:10 a.m. posting a new found glory video, but fuck it. it’s videos like this that made me realize that i secretly never outgrew this band – even though i was the old guy in the back getting drunk at their show earlier this year.

i’m gonna go ahead and ruin it: playing drums with a dead zombie slut’s appendages is probably the coolest thing i’ve seen in a music video in a long time.

Beginning this month, I’m going to be volunteering for the Welcome House and Bark Ark Bully Rescue. I found both of these organizations through Volunteermatch. Time is something every person has the ability to give. I believe giving of yourself and your time is much more powerful than just giving of your money. There are things that more people need to see, even if it is difficult or painful to do so. That is something I am hoping to work on. I would like to learn to look at those difficult and painful things without turning away.

Also, Scot and I are going to test-drive this church Sunday; I have high hopes.

And a sneak peak of something else I have high hopes for if I can pull it off;

Listening to this all night, it happens every year as soon as the weather gets colder;

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a new favorite Postsecret. Even if there aren’t as many happy, hopeful ones each week, I find plenty of sad secrets posted by people I then can pray for. Maybe the fact that their secrets made it onto Frank’s blog that week is more important.
