My friend Bindu recently posted a question on her blog: “If your life were mixed tape, what songs would be on it?”  I thought the question was a good one, and I’ve decided to bring you my own mixed tape.  I’ll preface by saying that musically, it’s all over the map (but, I tend to be that way so it makes sense).

1. You Got It (The Right Stuff) – New Kids on the Block
   I think I was seven years old when I discovered NKOTB, and why my mom let me listen to them I’ll never know.  But, I do know that I was absolutely in love with Joey McIntyre and just sure that I was going to marry him.  So, instead of You Got It, I should probably have one of Joey’s high-pitched crooners up here, such as Please Don’t Go Girl.  And to add more weight as to why NKOTB is on this list, I saw them twice in concert in 2008 – once while standing in the rain at the Today Show and then when they came through DC on their tour. (Yes, I am crazy!)
2. Walkin’ After Midnight – Patsy Cline
   My list just wouldn’t be complete without this song.  As a child, whenever my cousin Rachelle and I would ride in my grandma’s car, Pasty Cline’s Greatest Hits album would have to be playing.  For some reason, as little girls, Rachelle and I loved listening to this.  We each had a favorite song.  My grandma loved Crazy, Rachelle would sing out to Back in Baby’s Arms, and I would belt out Walkin’ After Midnight.  A couple years ago I ended up buying this album on iTunes so I could recreate some childhood memories!
3. More Than a Feeling – Boston / Iron Man – Black Sabbath / Kryptonite – 3 Doors Down
   Yes, I know there are three songs here, but they sort of go together.  My junior year of high school, I met one of my good friends, Tiffany.  She was definitely different than the rest of the girls at Stanton High School, and after awhile we became attached at the hip.  Tiffany infused a little classic rock into my life.  We used to cruise back and forth to Omaha in her HUGE 1984 Buick listening to More than a Feeling and Kryptonite with the windows rolled down, wind blowing in our hair.  And how does Iron Man fit in?  Well, we figured out the melody line on our saxaphones much to our band director’s (and probably everyone else’s) annoyance!
4. Iowa State Fight Song
   This is kind of lame, but I really couldn’t think of any other song that represented my college years.  While I may have had grand ideas on where I wanted to go to college, I’m so glad that I chose ISU.  First off, it was just big enough for me to get lost in the crowd (something that never happens in a small town), and secondly, it was a life changing experience that helped shape who I am today.  I discovered Jesus in college, made lifelong friends and solidified my life goals and pursuits.  So, this one’s cheesy, but just go with it.
5. My Stupid Mouth – John Mayer
   This song is on here for two reasons.  One: Just like Mayer in this song, I have a tendency to stick my foot in my mouth, say things I don’t really mean, or just completely mess up what I say.  This is why I went to print journalism rather than broadcast.  It would be horrible!  Two:  I discovered John Mayer in college, and this song quickly became my favorite.  I probably traumatized my friend Amy because everytime she got in my car this cd would be playing.  Oddly, enough, six years later, John Mayer is still the cd in my car.  Some things never change.
6. Breakaway – Kelly Clarkson
   The first time I ever really listened to this song, I was immediately struck that it was all about me!  Here’s a sample of the lyrics: “Grew up in a small town / And when the rain would fall down / I’d just stare out my window / Dreaming of what could be . . . And I’ll make a wish / Take a chance / Make a change / And breakaway.”  As I moved away from Iowa on my own, first to Dallas and then on to DC, I felt that I made my own changes in life and did my own “breakaway.”
7. O Praise Him – David Crowder Band
   Not long after I started attending Frontline at McLean Bible Church, David Crowder Band put this song out.  I absolutely love this band; they are probably my favorite Christian group.  And this song to me is what it’s all about, to just praise God and the joyous noise we will be giving up to God in heaven.  I sometimes joke that I want David Crowder Band to have their own stage in heaven, because I’m going to be camped out right by them for eternity!
8. Say It Right – Nelly Furtado
   This song isn’t so much about what Nelly is singing about, but more about where I was when I first discovered this song.  I associate it with my mission trip to Romania, even though I heard the song in Budapest.  We were on the tail end of the trip, our last night to be exact, and had to leave for the airport at 4 in the morning.  So most of us decided that we would stay awake the entire night so we’d sleep on the long flight back to DC.  Well, if this was your last night in Europe and you were going to be awake anyway, you might as well explore the city at night, right?  A group of us ended up walking around the city the entire night.  We made a pit stop at what we thought was a jazz cafe on the isalnd in the middle of the Danube River.  Turns out it was a raving night club, and this song happened to be playing when we stopped and it just stuck with me.  I’d probably rank this night up there as one of the most memorable times in my life!
9. Glory Revealed – Candi Pearson-Shelton
   This song really spoke to me while I was in Burma.  One morning I was outside doing my quiet time.  Really, I was skimming through the book of Isaiah, when I came to chapter 40.  Verses 3-5 struck me as what we were doing in Burma:  A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” Our main objective was prayer walking on that trip, essentially preparing the way for the Lord.  Well, I soon realized that the CD our leaders had made for us had this song on it that is based on Isaiah 40.  It was really fitting, and everytime I listen to it, I’m brought back to our time in the mountains of Burma, where we literally forged our own path for God.
10. Home – Michael Buble
    This song is for all the times I’ve wanted to just pack my bags and jump on the next flight to Iowa.  For as much as I love living in DC and wouldn’t trade it for the world, when I’m home in Iowa, my stress melts away and I can just relax.  I probably sleep most of the time I’m home.  While getting my master’s at Georgetown, I made plans to go home at the end of every semester.  I went home more often in those two years than I ever had before.
11. Perfectly Lonely – John Mayer
    Yes, of course John Mayer is on here twice.  If I didn’t know that certain people would give me flack over it, I’m pretty sure all the songs could be John Mayer songs.  Well, this on is off his new album that came out last week.  And for those who know me well, you’d know the lyrics of this song sort of describe the self-imposed state of my heart right now.  But don’t think it’s too depressing, the song ends on a hopeful note, which is where I’m headed as well!

So, I’m going to continue Bindu’s question – if you had a mixed tape of your life, what would be on it?  And to answer Bindu’s other question – no I don’t have a theme to mine.  I told you it would be random!

No es que sienta simpatía por los rufianes. Gracias a dios, dos meses en chirona bastaron para que Mark diera un giro de 180 grados a su vida y aprendiera a ganarse la vida sin fastidiar a los demás. Tras su paso por la música y la publicidad (junto a Kate Moss, muñeca rota de la moda internacional, fue la imagen de la ropa interior de Calvin Klein) Wahlberg comenzó a hacer cine. Un poeta entre reclutas, Diario de un rebelde y sobre todo Boogie Nights, esa descarnada visión de la noche neoyorquina de los años 70, lo consagraron como actor.

En 2007 fue nominado al Oscar como mejor actor secundario por su papel en Infiltrados y acaba de terminar The Lovely Bones, un thriller dirigido por Peter Jackson (El señor de los anillos, District 9) que promete. Además, ha producido varias series de televisión, entre ellas Entourage, y actualmente rueda The Other Guys junto a un reparto variopinto en el que figuran Will Ferrell, Samuel L. In the past I have been accused of always picking on Ticketmaster when it comes to ticketing issues.  This is not true at all.  I am an equal opportunity offender.  If an issue rears its ugly head, I believe we as an industry should bring it up and discuss it.  Today’s blog post is not about Ticketmaster.  Today I am picking on a ticket broker. 

Unless you live in the Boston market, you may not have heard about the ticket fiasco between Ace Tickets and New Kids on the Block.  The New Kids are doing a fundraiser at the Boston House of Blues for Toys for Tots.  Proceeds from ticket sales are going to the charity.  Somehow Ace has lots of tickets selling on their website for as much as $300 per ticket.  The actual cost of the tickets is $60 each. Donnie Wahlberg from the band announced his disgust that ticket brokers were scooping up all the tickets for a fundraiser.  Ace released an apology and said they would give their profits from the sale of tickets to the charity.  Ace claimed they didn’t know it was a fundraiser.

Here are my questions:

1. How did Ace not know this was a fundraiser?  If you are going to be in the ticket selling business, don’t you need to know what you are selling?
2. How did Ace get the tickets in the first place?  I thought Live Nation and Ticketmaster (not picking on TM) have technology in place to prevent this from happening? If so, who gave Ace the tickets? Was it the venue, band, promoter, etc…?
3. Once Ace realized their mistake, why didn’t they give back all the unsold seats?

As an industry, we need to stop all this crap and start marketing and selling tickets in a correct way so that our customers will want to buy our seats. The blame is industry wide.  This goes from the agents & managers, to the acts, promoters, venues, and ticket agencies. Our customers are starting to look at us as not a legit business. We are better then all this. We are not the Wild Wild West.

About an hour ago I was sitting in front of the TV when my brother came home from running errands.  He told me he had been in The Salvation Army and got me something:

Yeah, that’s right.  A New Kids on the Block, Hangin’ Tough Live tour performance on VHS.  It doesn’t get any better than this (ok, it does but this is pretty close).  I love my brother.

I know you’re sad you have to go back to work today, and it’s like hurricane ida outside, and your umbrella broke , so now it just flops around and stabs random angry strangers on the metro who yell at you because they haven’t done anything fun since 1988. and even then, they only saw a new kids on the block concert, and sat in the back row, and they weren’t even tipsy. and you also had to take out the garbage this morning, and accidently spilled eight tons of coffee grounds all over the carpet. and maybe you don’t have sweet weekend plans yet, so you are worried you might stay home cocooned in your ugly black sheets until next summer, when you can finally go roast marshmallows at bonfire parties and make-out with cute people. but don’t panic. take a nap. get a huge hot chocolate and a wheat-free brownie with walnuts.  go see where the wild things are. you will be okay.

The Jonas Brothers

What is it about the Jonas Brothers that makes girls wet their pants? Seriously! Even me!

I’m a 28 year old Atheist who almost always hates pop music and even I have had a naughty thought (or two) about at least 1 of them. (Hey, so have you. At least I’ll admit it.) So finally I looked up and listened to a few of their songs because I was curious as to what they actually SOUND like… an important factor, for me at least, in liking a music group.

I gotta say, it was pretty bad. Granted, I have heard worse and considering how young these boys are, I’m definitely impressed that they write their own songs. These kinds of tween-friendly groups usually don’t. And you gotta hand it to them; to get to the level they have gotten to tells me that they are either really smart or at least managed by really smart people. And you gotta love the hair. Having said all that…

It was still pretty bad. Right on par I’d say with MMMBop but with awful lyrics. If they were not pretty young men, their music would be filed under the same category of importance as the consistency of your last bowel movement. It still makes me wonder though. Girls, young and old and somewhere in the middle, will always be attracted to pretty, well-groomed, big-teethed boys holding (and not necessarily playing) musical instruments while gyrating their loins. Regardless of the fact that what’s spewing out of their mouths and instruments is about as musically meaningful and thought-provoking as a wet fart.

I understand that men and boys also are attracted to untalented but sexy female artists too. But the difference is THEY don’t buy their albums. The boys seem to know on some level, that even though some female  pop stars are super hot and they’d love to give them a free side of sausage, they still know their music sucks. Do you know any straight men who own a Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan CD? Fuck no. I know lots of men who will beat off to a poster of them on a wall though. Girls will also beat off to a poster on a wall as well… but we’ll be listening to their terrible albums while we”re doing it.

So why do us girls get sucked into it then? Why the hell do I still have a New Kids on the Block cassette tape in a box somewhere? It’s almost worn out from all the times I played it back when slap bracelets and crunchy bangs were popular. And… I actually enjoyed it back then too! Thought it was so UNIQUE. And you wanna know why? Because they were cute boys, swinging their hips,  singing about “hanging tough!” What kind of weak disguise for a dick joke is that?

We need to wise up girls; guys are ahead of us in this category. You can think someone is hot, cute, attractive and everything but stop pretending that they have anything to offer other than that. Next time you’re getting all moist listening to your Jonas Brothers CD, close your eyes and picture Lyle Lovett (who actually IS talented) singing the same song.

Still moist? Didn’t think so.

When I was growing up, I had two girl neighbors. They were sisters and they were weird. I wonder where they are today.

Anyhow, they had New Kids on the Block pillows. I was the right age for to be obsessed with them, like every female I could throw a rock at, but I wasn’t.

Phenoms like Twilight Moms just perplex, yet fascinate me. I know one of them. Another friend my age (kidless) read every Twilight book too like the TM I know. I couldn’t make it past New Moon, with the overuse of the word  ”smoldering”.

Each to her own.  What is it inside certain gals that make them so “into” things they act like their life depends on it?  Some seem to have the obsession “gene” and some don’t I suppose.

There are so many amazing things to say about Sharon’s post, but I want to approach them through the somewhat roundabout route of telling you about The Book Fair.  The Book Fair was a magical event for kids such as us, who eagerly awaited new spelling lists and reading assignments.  Now, with the advent of amazon.com and Barnes and Noble, I doubt whether The Book Fair even exists–or if it does, whether anyone would actually send their kids to school with money to spend on it–but at the time, it was wonderful.  Basically, it amounted to a mobile bookstore kids section, which parked itself in the auditorium for a day.  I believe that we might have been allowed to make book purchasing decisions right there in the moment, but for the most part, we had already made our book choices in advance with the help of colorful (yet flimsy) Scholastic catalogs, which listed the newest titles and which were distributed in class the week before.

I remember going through the scholastic catalog each time, circling everything I wanted (usually almost every book in print, except for the boring ones about horses or basketball), and then painstakingly narrowing my list down to accord with the budgetary restrictions imposed by my mom.  When I was younger, the final list almost invariably included some fantasy or coloring book involving stickers or unicorns.  One year, though–I believe in fourth grade–I began to branch out.  My Book Fair purchases that year included 1) a biography of Jesse Jackson and 2) one of the Scary Stories books Sharon mentioned.

To be honest, I have no idea where the Jesse Jackson thing came from.  I have my doubts about whether I actually knew who Jesse Jackson was.  I do remember thinking that the description in the Scholastic catalog made him seem interesting, and that I was beginning to feel weird about the fact that I knew no Black people other than the lovely woman who cleaned our house (Ms. Gertie), despite the fact that I was growing up in a pretty diverse city (which, incidentally, was later ranked by Ebony as one of the best 5 cities for African-Americans to live  in the U.S.).  So I think I must have had vague aspirations of self-education, but these were sadly never realized.  I still remember bringing the book home, and hearing my dad ask why I would possibly have wanted a Jesse Jackson biography–and putting it onto the shelf, never to be opened again.  I’m not sure that he meant to be disapproving, but his tone–the same one he used when asking, “You don’t like those New Kids on the Block, do you?“–was enough for me, a lifelong Type A pleaser, to take the hint (or at least, what I perceived as the hint).

In a way, the Scary Stories book is even more enigmatic to me.  Sharon’s suggestion that I had a “complex” relationship with fear is–for me–putting it generously.  I was a full-on fraidy-cat, wuss, chicken, whatever.  I hated, and still hate, scary movies.  It’s hard for me to remember what things were like then, since there’s something about adulthood self-awareness that makes the childhood versions of our present neuroses seem unrecognizable.  For whatever reason, though–maybe it had something to do with the fact that we were starting to go to camps, and have sleepovers, and ghost stories were a consistent part of the TV versions of these things–I got the Scary Stories book, and read it with Sharon.  That is, I read most of it (minus “The Black Dog,” since I had a black dog of my own).  I still remember some of the more vivid phrasings in Sharon’s voice:

The drum beats grew louder and faster!  Suddenly, Jack pitched forward, dead.

Ah, childhood!  So many beautiful stories.  I do wonder how it was possibly acceptable for us to acquire such a text, given its general morbidity.

Of course, I don’t actually remember The Westing Game being forbidden.  In fact, I was almost certain that we read it in school…or at least, that we read some mystery book that had a cover with a black background and a spooky looking old mansion.  Though this may have happened after I left for the alien world of public school (more on this later!).  Still, I do remember at least one instance of literary censorship at the Unnamed Religious Private School, so it’s far from being out of the realm of possibility.

At some point (I don’t remember when), our class read Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Having seen the movie with Gene Wilder several times (and having had a chocolate addiction from a young age), I was pretty excited about this…though was somewhat disappointed that the book was a bit darker than the movie, with fewer bright colors and decidedly less singing.  Nevertheless, it was an exciting time in my elementary school life, not only because it was a story about chocolate–two of my favorite things!–it also involved getting a new book, copies of which Ms. Ditch (we’ll just say it was her) had passed out to each of us on the first day of the unit.

A couple of days into our reading, we came to the part of the story where Willy Wonka explains to Charlie and his grandfather that they should never ever drink the Fizzy Lifting Drink, since it previously resulted in the death of an Oompa Loompa.  The book description is much more intense than that of the movie, culminating when Wonka recounts the dreadful scene, in which he desperately shouts to the rapidly ascending Oompa Loompa: “Burp!  Burp you silly —, burp!”

Or, at least, that’s what he shouted in my book.  He shouted that in all of our books, actually, because the copies Ms. Ditch passed out to us had that word blacked out.  Interestingly, however, rather than moving along past the offending passage without remark, our class was then forced to have an in-depth discussion of why Roald Dahl (or Willy Wonka?) would have used such terrible language in the first place, thus drawing even more attention to the fact of its censorship.  I don’t remember what the outcome of that discussion was, or whether it was decided that Willy Wonka was a bad person.  But I do remember that, holding the page up to the light, I could barely make out the word: A-S-S.

I didn’t really know what it meant, but I did know one thing: whatever it was, it was worse than The Devil’s Birthday and Jesse Jackson.  And that seemed like kind of a big deal.

I just got an email from a ticketing promoter saying that for the next 72 hours tickets to Seals Brisbane and Adelaide shows are only $70 and that it is a dramatic visual experience not to be missed. Oh my! What a sensational saving of $90 and perhaps I will look at getting a couple of tickets. 

Is what I would say if I had no comprehension of money and if he had more than 2 songs. ‘Crazy’ and ‘Kiss From A Rose’ are not worth $35 each. Also what’s with this “dramatic visual experience” business? Does he get shot on to the stage via a cannon? Does he jump a huge fireball on a Harley? No to both? Well him crooning on a stool in front of a PowerPoint presentation does not a dramatic visual experience make. I declare shenanigans!

And let me get this straight, when Seals ticket sales are bad they can discount the price but when this happens to New Kids On The Block they have to cancel their entire tour? Shenanigans!  NKOTB had twice as many good songs as Seal AND those geriatrics could dance.

Can Seal get me a copy of ‘Point Break’ on DVD, the Slash autobiography and a donut?
Can $70 get me all of the above? Winner.

Oké, waarschijnlijk ben ik een van de weinige mensen die New kids on the block totaal niets aan vindt. Ik weet het niet, ik heb het een paar keer gekeken maar ik vind het eerder lomp en niet nuttig. En natuurlijk weet ik dat het programma ook niet nuttig hoeft te zijn. Maar waarom kijken er zoveel mensen naar? Ik bedoel, de meeste dingen zijn gewoon lomp en asociaal.

Naja, goed, ik hoop niet dat mensen precies zo gaan reageren als in die serie want dat gaat de wereld dus naar de hel.

Other than being a total nympho H-girl is pretty square. I don’t party much. I don’t stay out late. I eat healthy and try to work out regularly. I don’t smoke. I go to school and to church (yes I said church).

H-girl is not much of drinker either, but this week had been so stressful  when my ex-boyfriend/current really good guy friend invited me out for a night of barhopping, I took him up on the offer.

Two bars, one very racy dance to “The Right Stuff” by New Kids on the Block, and a combined 13 drinks later I was on the floor riding my ex-boyfriend’s  unprotected dick.

The sex was great. Wonderful in fact.  (We never really had a problem in that department).

In my humble opinion drunk sex is some of the best sex you can have. The only thing better is “make up sex” or “I’ve been stationed in Iraq for a year” sex.

Let me clarify this statement though. Drunk sex is only good when both partners are drunk.  If the woman is drunk and the man is sober, as long as its not a forcible rape scene or an orgy its kind of erotic. However, if the man is drunk and the woman is sober it usually isn’ t very good. In my experience, the man usually has a difficult time staying hard thus making it impossible for the woman to get any enjoyment out of his Jagermeister-smelling self.

When both partners are drunk, though, it tears down our walls of  inhibitions and loosens our hangups. That’s when the best sex occurs. My suggestion is to apply this no inhibition mindset to all of your sexual encounters and they can all be just as exciting.

Apparently the erstwhile boy band is releasing a new album today, and someone decided to catalog their glorious past. This caught my eye because growing up, I had to endure a younger sister who worshiped NKOTB (look it up kids!).

Her and noted Van Buren Boy/mining expert Stephanie used to fight over their band-themed bedding. Let me tell you, Kabul has nothing on two 8-year-old girls fighting over a boy band.

Anyway, this entire post makes me hate the musical clusterfark that was pop music in the mid 90’s, but the pictures are terrific – just click the link above. Poor Lou Pearlman! (Interesting Trivia Items I Learned While Googling Lou Pearlman: He grew up in Flushing and is a first cousin of Art Garfunkel).

Oh! I forgot to share the celebrity sitings I had in the past month.

I went to the premiere of Whip It in Boston. Drew Barrymore was there to answer questions at the end. It was AWESOME.  Such a cool actor/director. She is pretty ridiculous but that’s part of the reason why I love her so much.

Obviously the pictures aren’t that great because this was inside a movie theatre (no natural light). The flash didn’t help me very much but I was quite close. The movie was excellent by the way!

I also saw Danny Wood from New Kids on the Block perform at the Race for the Cure 5K “Get a Running Start Expo.” I never was a NKOB fan but I can appreciate the guy. He was performing some music he wrote that had to do with how his mother died from breast cancer. That’s really unfortunate. His music sadly, was unfortunate too. If you’ve ever seen “Music & Lyrics” with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, it was exactly like the scene where Hugh plays the show at the amusement park and there is a small crowd of avid supporters but then there are way more people just moseying about doing their own thing. Danny didn’t have a live band, just a DJ/Sound Engineer to press play and make sure the sound worked out. I felt bad for the guy.

That is all… 2009 has proved to be kind of void of celebrity sitings But there is still time!
