This is a brand new book and it’s already in talks for a feature film! Rumor is they are meeting with Selena Gomez about the lead role! The summary of the book is:

You are more than you think you are.
That is the anonymous message that Beth Michaels receives right before she starts seeing things. Not just a slept-through my-alarm-clock, late-for-homeroom, haven’t had-my-caffeine-fix kind of seeing things. It all starts with some dots, annoying pink dots that pop up on and over her mom and her best friend’s face. But then things get out of control and Beth is seeing people’s pasts, their fears, their secrets, their desires. The images are coming at Beth in hi-def streaming video and she can’t stop it. Everyone thinks she’s crazy and she’s pretty sure she agrees with them. But crazy doesn’t explain the gold envelopes that have started arriving, containing seeing keys and mysterious tarot cards. To Beth, it all seems too weird to be true. You are more than you think you are? But here’s the thing: What if she is?

The book was written by the writer of Bring It On and Stick It. Are you going to read it?

Banner: Gokulam Films
Cast: Mammootty, Sarath Kumar, Thilakan, Nedumudi Venu, Jagathy Sreekumar, Captain Raju, Lalu Alex, Manoj K Jayan, Biju Menon, Kalabhavan Mani, Suresh Krishna, Subair, Siddique, Roshan, Manikuttan, Kanika, Padmapriya, Urmila Unni, Valsala Menon, Nikhila
Direction: Hari Haran
Pazhassi Raja – Pride of place

In many ways ‘Pazhassi Raja’ occupied news columns in the recent past. It was the most anticipated Malayalam film this year. Its production equalling three big budget Mollywood films in terms of cost and time. And it is the Malayalam debut of Tamil industry’s big gun Sarath Kumar.

The final product as it appears on the celluloid seems to justify every effort and every rupee that went into its making. It tells the story of Pazahssi Raja who rebelled against the British rule in Kerala from ‘Padinjaare Kovilakam’ of Kottayam. It was conceived as a tribute to the legendary warrior and turns out to be just that atleast in spirit.

Hariharan’s choice of Mammootty for the title role is perhaps the best thing to have happened to the movie. His persona lends such power to the rebel’s character that it becomes hard to imagine any other actor as Pazhassi Raja.

The canvas of the film is huge. Hariharan is a master of co-ordination and his genius shows up in every scene. Resisting the temptations of graphics, he has gone for the real and original stuff even for the stunt sequences.

Illayaraja’s music is faithful to the period of the story. The genius has come up with a stupendous work that transports us to the British era. Raja’s music touches the heart.

Oscar winner Resul Pookutty captures the finest details in the clang of swords, the cock’s crowing, and other natural sounds. His mixing is of the highest quality.

Kanika does not have much to do except play Pazhassi Raja’s wife Kaitheri Makkam but Sarath Kumar, Manoj K Jayan and Padmapriya have bold and beautiful roles. Sarath Kumar is Edachena Kunkan, Pazhassi Raja’s army chief. His is another job well done. He understands his role well and plays it with finesse. Manoj plays Thalakkal Chanthu, a Kurichya guerilla warrior. Padmapriya as his fiancee Neeli is a revelation in the stunt sequences.

There isn’t much by way of a storyline either in the movie which is about fights and wars. The romance of Chantu and Neeli which could have provided the much needed relief is told too briefly and the script just leaves Neeli out in the final portions even as it talks about every other character’s end.

There is a feminist point-of-view to this film for which MT Vasudevan Nair can take all the credit. The women in this macho movie have remarkably been portrayed as bold, beautiful, courageous and assertive.

Ramnath Shetty works up sheer poetry with his lens that takes in the darkly enchanting mood of the forest, the lakes and virgin landscapes. Sreekar Prasad’s editing and Ravi Diwan’s impressive choreography all add up to the Pazhassi Raja experience. Not to forget about Jeyamohan’s dialogues, which gives authenticity.

There are no dramatic twists in all of its three hours, due to which some may lose interest in the middle. Also, the aroma of Kerala which is spread all across the movie may not work well in Tamil Nadu.

Finally a word of appreciation for producer Gokulam Gopalan who stuck to the task of completing the movie despite a string of tragedies that happened during its three- year- long shooting.

Twilight: New Moon is a 14 year old girl’s dream movie. It reminded me of the romances I had as a teenager – a wreck.

Something happened before Twilight: New Moon began, what that was, the audience doesn’t know. It’s obvious there is a romance between Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and they really love each other. Oh yeah, and Edward is a vampire but we never actually see him chew on anyone so we know that because…they told us so. All of the sudden, Edward leaves Bella unprotected from Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre) but it’s not clear why. The whole Cullen family is there, but I don’t know why they matter. Then Edward get sad. There is Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) who Bella leads on for most of the movie. He has a dark secret. Then Bella, Jacob and Edward do some stuff and get ready for the next movie. Uhm, that’s like…pretty much it.

Now before you ask me, “Didn’t you see the original?”, no I didn’t and that shouldn’t matter. I have a ten buck rule. If I have to pay ten bucks, it better be worth ten bucks. If I have to pay to rent the movie before, and then pay to see the movie, it’s not worth it. Each movie, even a sequel, has to have a beginning, middle, and an end. Twilight is one hundred percent middle. It’s insulting to the audience that they can’t be bothered to put together an entire movie.

The one plus side is there is a pack of half naked hunky-boys that run around the forest. Unfortunately for me, they are playing teenaged kids, so it’s hard to think of them of as sexy little beef cakes without feeling dirty.

What they do put together is a slapdash bit of soap opera drama. There is no real drama, no real romance, no tension, no real danger, not much of anything. The only thing is has in spades is intense eye contact.

They stare at each other from afar. They stare at each other up close. Their eyes dart back and forth. Their eyes melt. They go cold. They open wide. They close. In extreme cases, they turn away. I’m going to watch the out-takes on the DVD because I will bet dollars to doughnuts there are moments where the actors couldn’t hold it together when they were close and staring at each other and started to break up laughing. It will probably be the most entertaining part of the DVD.

There’s just nothing to Twilight: New Moon. There’s no plot and horrible acting. There is certainly nothing worth watching.

Tried our luck for 2012 and ended up watching Tum Mile. Had some expectation after reading reviews of TOI, B.W.H, Rediff. But the movie turned out to be a big bore.

Ex-lovers meet after six years and the flash back starts. Love story of Emraan and Soha starts in Cape Town and it oscillates bwn the present period. Present period is the fateful day in Mumbai floods, deluge in 26th July 2005.

No chemistry bwn the lead pair, very insipid love, fight incidents bwn the lead pair, very long movie with two and half hours duration with no interesting incidents makes you highly uncomfortable. In satyam where i watched, people started commenting loudly scene after scene. thats how they entertained themselves.

Only saving grace of the movie was the excellent music of Pritam. Pls listen to the music and avoid a visit to theatre.

When I first saw the trailer for this film I thought of Wu-Tang, and how they would make a great addition to the movie soundtrack and/or video game. I figure the inclusion of Murs and Xzibit is a product of their geographic location, and their propensity for networking with movie heads. Give them credit, it appears to be the only rap track on the soundtrack. The track is a little fluffy, cheesy, or whatever relatively harmless diss you’d like to insert. But the movie looks off the hook, peep the soundtrack preview, tell me ninja’s aren’t bad ass. Shinobi stand up!

Tum Mile is the movie from Vishesh Films. It is the movie which has the back drop of Mumbai floods in 2005. Soha Ali Khan and Emran Hashmi played the lead roles. Jannat fame Kunal Deshmukh has directed this film.

Movie is up to the expectations, performance of Soha Ali Khan and Emraan is pretty good. The real hero for the movie is camera man Prakash Kutti only. Movie has all the required things to bag huge success at the Box Office.

But the only problem is Hollywood movie 2012. 2012 is a visual grandeur and became huge hit in India than Hollywood. This effect reduced the Tum Mile collections.

I may read US Weekly religiously, but I am not celeb-struck. I don’t swoon over leading men and fantasize about someday marrying them (here’s looking at you, Katie Holmes). I wonder about their “real lives” and what they’re really like, but I’m not overly invested in what they are or aren’t doing. But I was really, really impressed by John Krasinski at his Q & A after Interviews with Hideous Men on Friday night.

The most impressive thing about John Krasinski was how open and intelligent he was. He was happy to revel in the analytical side of his work, honest about how he caught a lot of breaks to get this movie to fruition, and his intelligence really showed through. I mean, the guy went to Brown BEFORE he made it as Jim, so obviously there’s something cooking up top. But he hasn’t lost sight of that or let it slip, which is really great.

Without further adieu, a not-verbatim (I typed as fast as I could on my iPhone) transcript of my favorite parts of the Q & A:

I started writing the script before I had the rights while I was waiting tables. I knew who I wanted to cast. No one was allowed to read script until they talk to me. They were like, What?? Only Spielberg does that. And these actors’ agents were like, c’mon, it’s fine, it’s just Jim.

I cast all the people I was watching as I was writing the script. I’m all about breaking the rules.

I just put the words of book into the actor’s mouth and that’s it.

I never wanted to direct. That’s true. We were out looking for directors at lunch at Sharky’s in LA and I was with Rainn Wilson [the crowd ooohs a collective "ohmigod"] Ohmigod? … Wow Rainn never gets ohmigods. I’m gonna text him right now.

Anyway, he said why don’t you do it?

The best way to direct is in ignorance. Have fun … I compare it to bowling when they put down the bumpers. [He surrounded himself with other experienced Hollywood heavyweights like his director of photography] I’m directing and I’m like, I’m amazing! and they’re like, whoa, easy there, we put down these big gray things … you can’t fail…

All the other guys in the movie are playing insecure … they’re showing you, ladies, if you let us talk we will shoot ourselves in the foot. Start clapping.

The unforgivable thing is when you know what you’re doing is wrong and you continue to do it.

My character was a selfish character. He is gross. But he’s fun to play, I’m not gonna lie.

I had the equivalent of money fall from the sky and that’s not a joke. My roommate from college, I showed him the script. He said he wanted in and I said no, you can’t mix friends and money, blah blah and he told me how much money he wanted to put into it and I said, You are my producer. That was amazing. He trusted me.

There’s still time to see Interviews with Hideous Men this week at Alamo Ritz, here for tix.

What can I say about 2012? Well, it’s three years away…two years in to a new decade

What can I say about 2012? Well, it’s three years away…two years in to a new decade…and supposedly the end of the world. What about the film? Well, the film is 40 minutes too long, 1 story line short and 17 special effects over the top.

The majority of the film follows Cusack’s character who was apparently a writer. Overcome with some crazy superhuman skills and some information retrieved from a typecast Woody Harrelson, Cusack embarks on a mission to find the arks being built by the super powers of the world. Amazingly, his fast and the furious driving skills allow him to reach his ex-wife’s house and get his kids (+ex-wife and her new guy). Somehow his car manages not to fall down in the cracks splitting the earth and they end up escaping via small passenger plane. The rest of the film is cookie cutter action, with the only really intriguing part being the “end of the world” mind-f$#% they propose.

The entire story is lacking any sense of continuity and sense of importance. It is crazy difficult to sympathize, let alone empathize with the characters thrown at the audience, despite the horrible situation they find themselves in.

Now, I also feel slighted by this film for another reason. The whole idea behind the 2012 mindset, is that it REALLY is the end of the world. This movie presents the idea that it MIGHT be the end of the world, but it really is not. I went in expecting a disaster film and left jaded by another piece of Hollywood trash. It wasn’t “the End of the World” it was just the “really big earthquake, tsunami and volcano incident that killed of people but left africa untouched, changed the south pole to Wisconsin (wtf?) and let John Mother Effin Cusack drive, fly, drive, fly and climb his family to safety from California to China in the span of several hours.

Words cannot express the how disappointing this film was. It had potential, though the cast and the end result came up more than lacking. SOA Reviews refuses to give this film a stamp of approval and suggests you see it at your own risk. Expect nothing more than a SMASH UP of special effects and celebrity faces thrust into a patchy story line. Avoid if you want something more than a cookie cutter action flick.

from http://geektyrant.com/: This new Amy Heckerling film is the last this we need to see get made.

from http://geektyrant.com/:

This new Amy Heckerling film is the last this we need to see get made. Heckerling made classic films such as,Fast Times At Ridgemont High and Clueless. But this next project she is writing and directing sounds pretty awful. Here’s what the movie is about.

The film will be a modern-day tale of two young female vampires living the good life in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardise their immortality.

So there you have it! That my friends is Sex in the City with vampires, and the last thing we need right is another weak-sauce vampire film. This whole vampire movie phase is getting out of hand.

Actress Krysten Ritter will take on one of the female leads and additional casting is underway. This will mark the first feature starring role for Ritter, who most recently appeared in Confessions Of A Shopaholic and will next be seen in DreamWorks’ comedy She’s Out Of My League.

Production is set to start in March 2010 with Red Hour Films.

This is a review from a normal guy who is not into movies but was impressed with the movie The Stepf

This is a review from a normal guy who is not into movies but was impressed with the movie The Stepfather.

The movie is directed by Nelson McGormick who turns out to have directed the movie Prom Night.

“The Stepfather” was captivating from the start, with unexpected twists which leads to a riveting end. The Stepfather deserves a “thumbs up” and a rating of four out of five ( in my book).

The movie begins with David Harris (Dylan Walsh), a father who killed his entire family. He moves to Portland and meets a divorcee Susan Harding (Selah Ward) who falls in love so fast, she is blinded by his violent and secretive life.

One of the reasons I like this thriller is because it moves pretty fast with interesting twists. Kelly Porter (Amber Heard) and Michael Harding (Penn Badgley) the son shares a beautiful relationship. There are some sexy scenes with Kelly that I’m sure every guy would enjoy. I mean she’s always in her underwear. The styling was average, I wanted Susan Harding, the divorcee to be more of a diva – but it works.

On the reality side of things, I thought the wife would have been more critical. She was too easy but guess what; it’s a movie so expect that – dumb things happen. The movie was not as bloody like other horror films (which I liked), very conservative on the bloody side. The music was great though, scary at most points and I felt the gruesome passion involved.

The ending is not what I had anticipated; but it works. It ends with a message of continuity, or it hints at it.

This blog endorses The Stepfather. Love it.

Where the Wild Things Are is a live action adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children

Where the Wild Things Are is a live action adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book. The book not being very long no doubt gave director Spike Jonze a lot liberties on the direction the film could go, but he has to tackle the difficult task of how far to take it. Does he go deep and maybe a little dark and stay true to the creator’s vision and risk losing people or head for a lighter tone and a formula sure to be huge family favorite? Give Spike Jonze a lot of credit because he sure didn’t go the safe route.

Max is an energetic restless young boy who already has his fair share of problems. Max is misunderstood and feels his broken family is moving farther away from him. The night his mom brings home a date, Max dresses up like a wolf and misbehaves and bites his Mom out of anger. His Mom scolds him, causing Max to run away from home. Max finds a boat and sails away somehow, landing on a strange island with giant scary creatures. To avoid being eaten Max convinces the creatures that he is actually king from a far away land with mystical powers not to be messed with. The creatures accept him and slowly become good friends living everyday just to have fun.

Where the Wild Things Are very easily could have “movie by the numbers” with great special effects. It would have been more successful and created tons of fans. Instead, the movie tries very hard to dig deeper to the true meaning of the book. The movie looks at how scary the world must look at for child who just learns at school that one day the Sun might be gone. Max is dealing with his innocence and impulsiveness with reality. More importantly, his anger and insecurity. Now like the book, you could say the creatures are different parts of his personality, but to me the creatures all represent things or people in his life. The creature Carol is basically Max. His Mom is K.W. If you pay close attention all the events on the island are the events prior to him arriving. Carol just wants K.W. affection and attention, but she seems to care more about the owls Bob and Terry, who represent his Mom’s boyfriend. When K.W. brings Bob and Terry to their newly built fort, Carol throws a violent fit only earning K.W.’s distrust and fear. Max wants to control of everything and keep everything the same, but he can’t be the king of his emotions. There is no such king.

There is always a flip side of taking a risk. The movie is very psychological in a sense that the raw emotions will leave children confused on why the creatures are fighting among themselves and some might even find the monsters too scary and intense. The story pace will make some viewers feel like its moving to0 slow and wonder whats the point of it all. The best way I can describe the explanations in Where the Wild Things Are is that everything is introverted. When Max returns home and greets his Mother, she welcomes him home in open arms but never really says a word to him. Emotions come across and Max understands that he is loved and accepted, but with little dialogue it will leave most people thinking to themselves, that’s it?

Where the Wild Things Are is a ground breaking film in understanding the pain and confusion of youth. Some may find it very depressing and pointless, which is understandable, however, there is a great and powerful message underneath. The movie peels back the dangers of insecurity and anger and the maturity it takes to conquer them. The film could have used more mass appeal, but the film worked for what it was trying to do. It might not be for you, but then you can’t sit back and complain when Transformers 7, X-men 10, and Saw 23 come out and wonder gee I wonder why Hollywood can’t make anything original and full of passion once in a while. Where the Wild Things Are will get overlooked, but I recommend you give it a try, you might hate it, or you might find your own reasons for thinking its genius.

4 STARS

I am pumped for Joe Dante’s new upcoming movie, The Hole. As you may already know Joe Dante was responsible for such classics as Gremlins, The Howling, Innerspace, The Explorers and horror classic Pirahna (now being remade) in the late 70’s. Most recently I rewatched “The Burbs” which was another great movie he helmed as well as Twilight Zone: The Movie. His movies always have that almost family friendly 80’s quality to them, even his later “horror” films and I mean that in a very good way. A feel that you don’t find so much in modern cinema anymore. Well his next movie is supposed to have that old school feel to it. He compared it in recent interviews to the 80’s classic “The Gate” which is one of my all time favs. He also stated the film will be in 3-D and will deliver some classic chills. I personally would love to have that feeling again I had when I first saw Gremlins. I have a feeling this film is going to be ALOT of fun…check out this Interview with Joe as he gives a little more insight on this family friendly horror movie:
