Happy Monday, everyone!

Window gazing.

I’m currently sipping on coffee and enjoying the awesome city sights of a brick wall through my kitchen windows. (The difference between NYC and Chicago is that I get to say windows as opposed to window.) C’est l’amour!

Things are winding down for me with grad school– 2 weeks left to be exact– and everything is kicking into high gear. The only difference is that subtle push I feel to persevere to the end. As consultants in our final magazine innovation project, it can sometimes be hard to truly see your work as something that will “matter” in the big scheme of things. Will anyone take our project seriously? Will they be so floored that they grovel at our feet and beg us to consider high-powered jobs at their organization? Probably not, but these are big question/considerations, my friends.

In Chicago, there are very few editorial options. As students, we are made abundantly aware of this truth with many of our guest speakers focusing on their big, debt-inducing move to New York after graduation. (Success always follows shortly after.)

So what gives, Chicago? Does this leave better odds for me as I’m wanting to stay? I can only hope. But until these fateful 2 weeks come to a close, I’ll continue to explore my options and look forward to the next adventure! (Sound cheesy? Maybe it is, but pessimism never got anyone far in a recession…)

BEIJING (Reuters Life!) – A Chinese city with one of the nation’s highest rates of AIDS has opened a government-funded gay bar in an outreach effort that has stirred debate over the use of taxpayers’ money. The health department in Dali, a picturesque city on a lake in southwestern Yunnan province, funded the bar to reach out to China’s increasingly open gay community. Dali is one of the 10 cities in China most affected by AIDS.

Same-sex transmission accounts for about one-third of new HIV infections in China, the minister of health said this month.

“Some readers think that it’s a waste of taxpayer money, or an indirect endorsement of homosexual behavior,” the Beijing News said in an opinion piece on Monday, citing letters to the editor after it ran an article on the bar over the weekend.

“They think if there were another way to reach out to the gay community, it wouldn’t be necessary to open a bar.”

Founder Zhang Jianbo hopes that the bar will be a public gathering place for gay men, especially from rural villages, who used to gather in a patch of woods near the historic town.

The bar offers sex education and free condoms, in addition to companionship, Zhang said in an interview with the newspaper.

Though funded by the government, the bar is staffed by volunteers from a local non-government organization that works to prevent AIDS.

“Each year, the Dali city government spends 20,000 yuan ($2,929) on treatment drugs for AIDS. So if our bar succeeds in reducing transmission, our 120,000 yuan will be well-spend,” Jiang Anmin, deputy director of health in Dali, told the paper.

China’s gay community for decades lived in fear of discrimination and prejudice, with the earliest gay bars often the targets of police raids and closures while homosexuals often married women to avoid family and social pressures.

China now has about 100,000 known AIDS cases, but some health experts worry that HIV could spread easily among migrant workers and other hard-to-reach sectors. The government has switched to a strategy of outreach to the gay community, as part of efforts over the past few years to fight the spread of HIV.

“In the past the government relied on NGOs to reach out to the gay community,” Bing Lan, director of outreach organization Aibai, told Reuters.

“Now there’s a change, in that some local health bureaus feel they are able to reach out to the community themselves.”

But one unintended consequence of outreach efforts in parks, bars and bathhouses frequented by gay men, Bing said, is that some gay men now avoid those haunts for fear of being found out.

“Today I saw a blog, saying that when the bar in Dali has its official opening on World Aids Day, no-one will dare to go because there will be too many reporters there,” he said.

I don’t know if it’s because I was sick and home alone for so many days, or if it’s because of PMS, or what, but now that the holiday season is upon us, I have been struggling with all these conflicting emotions.

I’m excited about having met “Paul”. He is, so far, a really great guy. I saw him on Saturday night; I went over to his place and we spent a low key evening together. He had gotten some fancy cheeses that afternoon at the cheese shop in his neighborhood, so we shared some of that with a baguette and wine, while talking about our different families and Christmas gifts. He is really into music, and was introducing me to some of his favorite new bands, and was playing a sampling on his iPod. And he is a really good kisser. Love that! He even brought up New Year’s Eve. If I am in town (I have been trying to plan a trip somewhere warm for New Year’s but it’s expensive…) I think I might have a date!

At the same time, I have been feeling nostalgic about my ex. Yes, I know that he is what Karen Salmansohn calls a “Prince Harming,” but he did have a lot of good qualities (though some friends of mine would disagree.) I keep thinking about “one year ago.” He first met my family on Thanksgiving. He was the first boyfriend I ever introduced to my family! I met his whole family two weeks later at his cousin’s wedding. We spent Christmas together, had a Holiday Party together, New Year’s together. It’s tough. But I know it’s not worth trying to relive the past. It’s over – behind me now. Gotta keep moving forward…creating new memories for next year…

So last night, I watched, the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary” concert, which took place at Madison Square Garden for two nights in a row in, New York City. The headlining acts included Jerry Lee Lewis, “Crosby, Stills and Nash”, Paul Simon solo, Simon and Garfunkel, Metallica, Aretha Franklin, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, etc.

I must say, it was a really good show, I was impressed with it. The first half of the show was really amazing, but toward the end got kind of boring.

Tom Hanks, opened the show with a little introduction, then Jerry Lee Lewis came on the stage, banging “Great Balls of Fire” on his piano even almost at 80 years old. Jerry Lee Lewis still has it, he can still sing and play killer piano as always. Like he always does at the end of the song, he’ll stand up and kick the piano seat down, then he stood up, picked up the piano seat and threw it on the floor, and he is an old guy doing that!

Crosby, Stills and Nash, came on, and they put on an amazing performance. They still got it after all these years. The crowd in NYC gave ‘em a standing ovation. When CSN invited Bonnie Raitt to the stage to sing a slow acoustic ballad, it blew my fucking mind. Bonnie Raitt has always been amazing and she still is. She’s a helluva singer.

Paul Simon played a solo set that was awesome, he kicked it right off with “You Can Call Me Al” and his vocals were quite impressive during that song. After his set, of course, Paul Simon had to bring out Art Garfunkel to the stage. Simon Garfunkel did their most well known songs, “The Sounds of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, Not Fade Away, The Boxer, Bridge Over Troubled Water and Cecilia”. It was an amazing set. I think this would have to be my favorite performance of the entire show. It was very powerful. I honestly think Art Garfunkel can sing way better than Paul Simon. Art sings beautifully, his voice is haunting.

After this Stevie Wonder came on stage, going from a variety of special guests from Smokey Robinson to John Legend to B.B. King. My favorite songs Stevie did was “Superstition” with Jeff Beck and MJ’s “The Way You Make Me Feel” with John Legend. Stevie Wonder is always amazing, he just never sucks every time he goes on stage.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were very dissapointing, not good. Only great performance that Bruce did was when he played with Tom Morello on the “Ghost of Tom Joad”, now that was an incredibly tight performance. Bruce wrote the song “Ghost of Tom Joad”, and he had Tom Morello perform with him ’cause Rage Against the Machine covered it. Bruce played the song acoustically on the album, this was full band electric. Tom and Bruce were trading licks and solos back and forth. As usual Tom Morello playing very unique guitar techniques that no one else could have played. I think Bruce was looking a little embarrassed up there ’cause he knew that Tom is a better guitar player than him. That was a really good performance but the rest of Bruce’s set was kind of boring.

Metallica however, they were ok, but nothing that great, that time. I wished they choosed better songs. It was kind of boring hearing Lou Reed play the same three chords through “Sweet Jane”, that was all he played, making it look too easy for Metallica to improvise on. The same with Ozzy and Ray Davies, choosing simple songs that the band could play.

Ozzy did a good job, but it was kind of hard to watch him. There is Ozzy the TV reality star, not the metal god he once was. He destroyed his music career and music image by becoming part of the gossip celebrity world, in the reality TV stuff. I lost my respect for Ozzy.

U2 was not good at all. I’m not really a fan of U2 anymore ’cause I’ve about had it with Bono’s ego lately.

Other than that, this was a decent show. I wished Eric Clapton didn’t pull out of this gig ’cause I can see Eric jamming on stage with his old friends like Jeff Beck for starters, B.B. King and maybe even Jimmy Page. That would have been kind of cool to see Eric, Jeff and Jimmy Page on stage together performing old Yardbirds songs which I’m sure would have happened if Eric Clapton didn’t pull out of the gig.

It was a cool show though, I liked it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Savvy Magazine, The Red Carpet Pageant, Karaliene Productions and New York’s own Amaris Acosta invite you to attend The Queens Corner Pageant Networking Event

NEW YORK, NY– NOVEMBER 30, 2009 – Think you have what it takes to be a Queen? Let the experts decide at the second annual Queen’s Corner (www.the-queens-corner.com) pageant networking event, taking place on Saturday, February 27th at the Hilton Gateway in Newark, New Jersey. Hosted by founder and former Miss Caribbean USA, Amaris Acosta, the Queen’s Corner attracted contestants, exhibitors and titleholders from the tri-state area and beyond at last year’s event and has become the premiere social networking event and expo of its kind for the East Coast. This year’s sponsors include Savvy Magazine, The Red Carpet Pageant & Prom andKaraliene Productions.

The Queen’s Corner is a day long series of workshops that provide attendees with advice and tips in various areas including interview, nutrition and competition prep from some of the industry’s premier pageant coaches and top titleholders. Last year’s event featured a keynote address by Miss USA 2005, Chelsea Cooley. This year’s keynote address will be delivered by famed media coach, Don Baker of Don Baker Communications.

The event also provides a platform for many of the pageant world’s top vendors with the opportunity to showcase their wares to a large number of contestants who are seeking to gain an advantage over the competition.

“The Queen’s Corner is currently in its second year and my goal this year, as always, is to make available the best in pageantry to the tri-state area,” says Acosta “ Especially in NY we tend to have access to high-fashion but not pageant necessities. Often we have to travel quite a bit for coaches, pageant attire and photographers. This becomes especially costly for at-large delegates. So I wanted to bring a bunch of pageant resources under one roof and give the girls a chance to network, have an extra appearance under their belt, and be featured in a way that is not often found on the upper East Coast.”

Interested in attending this year’s event? Tickets for the Queen’s Corner are currently being sold via the event website for an early bird discount of $25. For more information about The Queen’s Corner or to purchase tickets, visit: www.the-queens-corner.com.

If you’re attending a conference here and can fit in just one outing, this one should be it.

This 5-mile, 25 minute boat ride from Whitehall Terminal in Battery Park at the tip of Manhattan to the historic city of St. George on Staten Island offers outstanding views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the city’s various bridges. In the waters closer to St. George you’ll enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the city’s skyline. Perhaps best of all, this simple pleasure is absolutely free.

The Staten Island Ferry is a working commuter ferry (no vehicles allowed) provided by the New York Department of Transportation to bring Staten Islanders into the city.

The ferry runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The fleet makes 110 trips each weekday and 64 trips each weekend day, making this an attraction that’s easy to fit into your schedule. Timetables are available in 7 languages.

Ferry history and tips for a pleasant trip (hint: wrap your camera strap securely around your neck or wrist) are available at http://www.siferry.com/

If you have the time, consider hopping off the ferry and taking a meal and a wander in St. George. The area right around the ferry terminal is a historic district sprinkled with architecturally appealing old buildings, including many large Victorians left over from the city’s heyday as a fashionable resort in the 1830s.

Dozens of movies have been filmed wholly or partly on Staten Island, and a recent influx of artists seeking affordable has also contributed to making ‘the forgotten borough’ a vibrant community well worth a visit.

Frank or Jay-Z? Jay-Z or Frank?

MSG Network programmers are setting out to answer that question with an online poll and a night that pits Frank Sinatra and Jay-Z in a head-to-head battle over the best New York theme song.

Sinatra’s “New York, New York” had been the de facto theme song for all things good in the city until Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” hit.

The new song, which features Alicia Keys, became sort of a musical background for the Yankees’ championship.

Wednesday at 10:30 p.m., MSG will re-air “Fuse Presents Jay-Z, Live From Madison Square Garden,” a concert that aired live on Sept. 11, 2009. That telecast will be followed by “Frank Sinatra: The Main Event, Live at Madison Square Garden,” a classic October 1974 concert.

To help decide the debate, MSG is asking viewers to vote at msg.com/sinatra. The polls will be open until Dec. 7 at noon.

Today on Alphabet City: A stranger introduces Jon Paul to a new Big Apple holiday captured in an excerpt from Episode 3

Thanksgiving aftermath is really about the creative use of leftovers. So in case you missed some of last week’s turkey-themed postings, I recommend you reheat a few of these gems: Theme Week & Spit List which sets up a two new excerpts, and Thanksgiving Superpower, a sweet little tale of a little boy’s love for the dishwasher.

My own experience with leftovers continued even after I scraped out the last bits of buttermilk pie, and waved goodbye to the few remaining out-of-town guests. Chef Juan Pablo had accepted an invitation from a client to an “Annual Thanksgiving Party” that happened on the Saturday after the holiday—the invitation promised a full feast including bird, dressing, pies, the works. Who wants to eat another Thanksgiving meal after cooking one for 12? Sounds like just the kind of thing I’d hate, right? Wrong. We were both thrilled with the prospect.

Why? Because when your partner is a chef, you rarely get invited to eat dinner at anyone’s home—people are too nervous and embarrassed about possibly serving anything subpar. With dinner invites few and far between, who am I to be picky? Chef had taught a series of cooking classes for our hosts, an investment banker and his new bride. I was pretty impressed that the student would invite the teacher, and like a true New Yorker, always intrigued with the opportunity to see a new apartment.

It’s been a long time since Chef and I have been to a party where we are so obviously the only gay guys in the room. And believe me, we stood out. While most male guests were in banker casual chic jeans and untucked button down shirts, I sported a brightly patterned Paul Smith shirt, tightly cut Parke & Ronen trousers and my favorite flashy brown patent leather Neil Barrett loafers. Gay as a goose.

Chef and I stood off to the corner asking each other typical gay party questions like, “How would you redecorate this apartment?” A sweet young couple took pity on us, made eye contact, and asked the go-to party ice-breaker question, “So how do you know the host?”

Once they heard the answer, they signed up for cooking classes with Chef, and asked how we met. They didn’t blink an eye when I told them the Gay.com story, although I edited out the well-endowed part (CLICK HERE to read that post/excerpt). Then I asked how they had met, and the answer excited me.

“I was out celebrating my New York Move anniversary,” the young woman named Monet (or Monay?) began. “I had lived in New York for a year and decided to celebrate. So I took myself to a neighborhood taco place, sat at the bar, and he was there with friends. Turns out he lived just down the block from me.”

I’d never heard of celebrating the date of your move to the Big Apple, but I immediately fell in love with the idea. We spent the next 30 minutes telling each other war stories about the good ‘ole days. And now I have a new event to look forward to on my calendar.

Thanks to Monet, the party served up more than just leftovers. And here’s a special serving for you—an excerpt from Alphabet City’s Episode 3: Summering, about my first few weeks in Manhattan. Something I’ll celebrate at my next New York Move anniversary.

Doze Green was born and raised in the upper west side of Manhattan, New York City and was one of the pioneers of the Hip-Hop culture. He first started writing graffiti in his neighborhood in 1974, and started painting subway trains in 1976.
The following year he joined the Rock Steady Crew. The Rock Steady Crew were pioneers of a new style of dance known as breakdancing or B-Boying. The crew first started dancing at art exhibitions and galleries of Soho and the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
During this time Doze was also attending the High School of Art and Design, where some of the most talented and well respected graffiti artists came from. Artists such as Lady Pink, Daze, Ernie Valdez, Seen TC5, Mr. Wiggles, Mare 139, and numerous others. In 1982 Doze showed his artwork in a well known group show at the Fun Gallery. At this same time after appearances in major movies such as Flashdance, Style Wars, and Wildstyle, the Rock Steady Crew was launched into action and the limelight.
From B-boy to graf legend Doze has gone to tagging the hallways of South Bronx projects to designing for clothing lines like Kikwear and Ecko. In the process, he’s become a proponent of the avant-garde “fusionistic” art movement.
Best known for his characters, Doze has begun to concentrate on canvases that blend wildstyle techniques with metaphysical concepts. “I think I’m at the point where I’m movin’ even further, to more distant frontiers like sculpture and 3-D painting”.
“Probably the biggest challenge and the most fun is painting live,” reveals Doze. “There’s a communion between the audience, the DJ and myself. The DJ is feeding off the music, and if the crowd is hype, he goes that extra mile. The same applies to me.”

If you dig Doze Green’s work check out some of the covers he has done for the Future Primative series including the cover work for the Presage cd. He has also done some work for the Deep Concentration series.

Recently I saw the PBS special “Latin Music USA!” which was a great series on the origin

Recently I saw the PBS special “Latin Music USA!” which was a great series on the origins and influences of the diverse styles of Latin Music in the United States. The episodes covering New York City got me reminiscing about my time living there in the mid 1990s. When I moved there in my early 20s for graduate school, it was an overwhelmingly awesome culture shock for this California girl. To be dropped into Washington Heights (Quisqueya Heights if you know) was an mind bending experience. I started a sonic journey into the music of Nueva York ~ fueled by a desire to learn more about my own Latin heritage as well as love of culture and of my Caribbean brothers and sisters.

I love to dance and hit up everywhere from Copacabana and Latin Quarters to the down home clubs in the Boogie Down Bronx and Brooklyn. I saw some amazing bands play live including El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico and Marc Anthony. He hadn’t yet hit the mainstream audiences, but was selling out clubs performing salsa music. Anyhow, I can’t even begin to do justice to the enormity of the music which has come out of New York; all I can do is try to capture a slice of the New York I experienced, the one that lives in my memory.

“Calle Luna Calle Sol” is a Willie Colon song with Hector Lavoe on vocals from the mid 70s. This style of salsa dura chronicled street life and social problems found in the inner cities. The lyrics include the following lines: “mete la mano en el bolsillo; saca y abre tu cuchillo y ten cuidao. Pónganme oido en este barrio; muchos guapos lo han matao.” Translated they say “listen to me, in this barrio many have been killed; so take out your knife and be careful.”

“Lejos De Ti” by Angeles Canales talks about how much he loves New York, but will never forget his beautiful island of Puerto Rico. I recall listening to this song during the Puerto Rican Day Parade broadcast on 97.9 La Mega. What a mix of music ~ I actually taped (remember that?!) the radio that whole day. This version is poignant as his audience sings the entire first verse which leads Angel to get emotional.

Venezuelan bass player and sonero Oscar D’Leon’s “Lloraras” is a classic about heartbreak and karma. To this day, this song will get me on the dance floor:

Living in Quisqueya (the native name of the island of Dominican Republic) Heights, merengue was ubiquitous as well as bachata. Grupo Mania was huge during the mid to late 90s. Here is “Ojitos Bellos:”

This song by Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez and Johnny Pacheco really represents the style of salsa I fell in love with in New York. Most likely I’ll do another post digging even deeper into the clave, salsa dura, Fania All-Stars, and boogaloo/Latin Soul. But for now, enjoy “Sonero”:

I really wanted to post Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez’ version of “Esos Tus Ojos Negros” but I couldn’t find his salsa version online. I did find what I think may be the original, a bolero from Colombia by Oscar Agudelo. It’s the same song but done in a much different style. I hope you enjoy as I did:

My boyfriend at the time put this next song on a mixtape he made me. I learned more from living life to the fullest in New York than I did in grad school. With all the romance, music, and dancing there wasn’t much time left for my studies! The lovely Lauryn Hill with “The Sweetest Thing:”

I also listened to some hard-core hip hop while living in one of the toughest cities in the countries. Here is Smif N Wessun with their Jamaican influenced “Sound Bwoy Bureil”:

New York City~ Washington Heights, Manhattan. San Gennaro Festival. Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Cafe Wha? The Red Train. The Roxy. Copacabana. Habichuelas. Tostones. Pasteles. Boriqua. First real love. Youth & innocence left behind on the subway lines.

From A Lower Eastside Poem:

Just once before I die
I want to climb up on a
tenement sky
to dream my lungs out till
I cry
then scatter my ashes thru
the Lower East Side.

So let me sing my song tonight
let me feel out of sight
and let all eyes be dry
when they scatter my ashes thru
the Lower East Side.

I don’t wanna be buried in Puerto Rico
I don’t wanna rest in long island cemetery
I wanna be near the stabbing shooting
gambling fighting & unnatural dying
& new birth crying
so please when I die . . .
don’t take me far away
keep me near by
take my ashes and scatter them thru out
the Lower East Side . . .

A butterfly on Bryan. I have done a number of larger tattoos on him recently that I am sitting on for an article on the shop coming out in a tattoo publication in Spring.

Recently, my friend Craig and I noticed that the legendary NYC graffiti anomaly PRAY had scratched her moniker into every vertical rung of the front window lattices of the tattoo shop. I was surprised to see them in the area of the shop. In classic style, they were about waist height as they appeared throughout Manhattan and shelters throughout the boroughs.

This is one of the more legible scribes I had photographed.

And here is a article and photograph from the website of my friend Zephyr.

…P * R * A * Y…

“New York City is a land of lost souls. I remember before “political correctness” when we referred to some homeless woman as a ’shopping bag lady’. Such women (barely) survived in the shadows of our (suppsedly) cosmopolitan city. PRAY was one such individual. She is, in my opinion, the most prolific graffiti writer ever.

Over the course of 4 or 5 decades, PRAY has painstakingly scratched small, somewhat obscure inscriptions reading “Obey God“, “Go to church“, and often “PRAY” into glass, plastic, and metal surfaces throughout the city.

To simply call her “prolific” would be an insult to her productivity, an enormous understatement. In New York City her scrathiti was everywhere. In the 1970’s, at the height of her productivity, New York probably had more PRAY tags than residents.

Ironically, there is a strong chance you’ve never noticed her handiwork. That is because her messages are often subliminal. They exist below the surface, literally and figuratively, but if you look in the right places you will find them… And when you do you will realize just how ubiquitous they are. PRAY’s trademark is commonly found scratched into the lower coin box section of public payphones. She often hit the vertical edge-runners of storefront roll down gates. The pillars of subway stations were also fair game to her.

I first became aware of her work in the early 1970’s. Her consistency was impressive, her volume mind-boggling. I discovered that many of my peers were aware of PRAY too. (Of note is Craig Castleman’s 1982 book ‘Getting Up‘ in which the artist Bama speaks at length about PRAY)

In 1978 I had my first encounter with PRAY. I was hanging out on the counter of West 86th St. with a few of my RTW homies. Across the avenue I saw an elderly woman slowly dip into a doorway on the east side of the avenue. For reasons I cannot explain, I immediately knew that it was PRAY. I ran across the street and as I approached her I saw that she had a rolled up newspaper in her left hand. She used it to cover the activity she was doing with her right hand. Her right hand was busy and her hands were gnarled from years of etching her graffiti into hard surfaces.

The top joint of her right index finger was wrapped in tape and her scratching tool was simply a dry-wall screw, also wrapped in tape. Her hands were black from the silt of NYC. She was disheveled, greasy looking, and appeared to have been clearly living on the streets for a long time. She was an elderly woman but possibly younger than she appeared. She was the living definition of ”a hard life”.

I came up behind her, I was awe-struck and I said “Oh wow! You’re PRAY?!”. Not a bright move. I startled her and she scurried away.

I looked where she had stood , and sure enough, she had left her imprint. Since I had startled her she had only left her P-R and first stroke of her A. I felt terrible. I had panicked the queen in “mid-etch” mode and caused her to leave her work unfinished.

In 1982 I was doing cel animation at an office in Times Square. Times Square was really sleazy back then: an ongoing parade of hustlers, hookers, addicts, and eccentric characters. It was great!

I saw PRAY in Times Square a few times during this period. On a couple occasions I actually followed her for a while. No one ever noticed or paid attention to her. She was dirty and forgotten: invisible. She moved at the pace of a sloth. She’d pick through garbage cans as she passed, but I never saw her actually take anything after them. I would follow at a safe distance, not wanting to repeat my mistake from a few years earlier. Sure enough, I’d get to see her do her thing. She moved slow but her scratchiti was very fast. PRAY is without question the all-time queen of graffiti. No one did as much. No one ever will.

Four years later, April 1986, I was sitting in Washington Square Park with a photographer friend. Lo and behold there was PRAY sitting directly across from us, perusing the newspaper. My friend was able to snap a photo of her. At that moment, history was made when the mysterious figure of PRAY was captured on film.

Over the years, I’ve discussed PRAY with countless people. People who were both familiar with her work and those who were not. I have written this out of my unique respect for this odd woman. She seemed singularly fixated on scratching PRAY everywhere she went. How or why she became so obsessed with this practice we will never know. Currently, no concrete facts about her personal life are known.

Among people familiar with her work, rumors abound. One common rumor was that she had a son with whom she collaborated. My research has found nothing to support this. It is also commonly assumed that a large group of people were responsible for these markings. I reject this premise outright. Let’s give credit where it is due. PRAY worked alone. Of course we can assume PRAY produced some copy-cats, but I fully believe these obscure marking still found on the streets of New York City were done by one individual. PRAY. The queen of graffiti.

Every year in NASCAR is different from past years in different ways. This season was no exception, a

Every year in NASCAR is different from past years in different ways. This season was no exception, as Jimmie Johnson made headlines and smashed records previously thought unbreakable in this day and age.

The year started with a wimper, as the Daytona 500 ended up being the Daytona 380, as the rains came to halt the race prematurely. Matt Kenseth left as the winner, his first Daytona victory, and as the teams headed west to California, Kenseth continued to impress, winning the first two races of the season. His success was short-lived, though, as he blew a motor early in Las Vegas and finished last. The remainder of the season saw Matt slowly drop in the points and just missed the Chase for the first time in his career.

The Busch brothers were on a roll early as well, winning the next three races (Kyle at Vegas and Bristol, and Kurt at Atlanta). Kurt Busch experienced a comeback season of sorts, winning two races and playing the role of contender in the Chase. His brother Kyle, on the other hand, saw a four-win season go to naught, as he, like Kenseth, narrowly missed the Chase.

Jeff Gordon led the points standing for a while early on, buoyed by a popular and long-overdue win in Texas, but a surging Tony Stewart grabbed the lead after Dover in the spring. Stewart, in charge of his own team at Stewart-Haas Racing, wasn’t expected to have any success with a team that has been known as a back-of-the-pack team. But, he has silenced the critics in a big way, winning four races (starting at Pocono in June) and qualifying for the Chase, along with his SHR teammate Ryan Newman. To give some perspective, Newman hasn’t made the Chase since 2005.

All the while, Jimmie Johnson played it cool, hanging around the top-five in points with three regular-season wins to his credit, including a second-straight Brickyard trophy. But by the time the Chase came along in September, Jimmie put on his Superman cape, and that 48 team came to life, winning four of the ten Chase races and easily grabbing a record fourth-consecutive championship. His average finish in the 10-race span was 6.8, but if you take out his surprising 38th-place finish at Texas (accident), his average finish is 3.3! Now that is domination.

Mark Martin ended being Jimmies closest competition in the Chase, ending up second in points for a fifth time in his career, adding to those in 1990, ‘94, ‘98, and 2002. Even though he ended up one spot short, the season has been a success for Mark, who, at 50 years of age, ended up with five wins, second behind Johnsons seven. Who says old geezers can’t keep up?

Juan Pablo Montoya made a surprising run at Jimmie Johnson in the Chase. Although he failed to win this year (coming very close at Indianapolis), he posted top-fives in the first four Chase races to close within 100 points of Jimmie before faltering at Charlotte.

Joey Logano ended up the youngest winner in NASCAR history when he outlasted the rain at New Hampshire. (Photo: Drew Hallowell/Getty Images for NASCAR)

Don’t forget the finishes…and first-time winners. Joey Logano, who would ultimately win Rookie of the Year honors, started slow with a 43rd in the Daytona 500, but riding the wave of a few ninth-place finishes, won at Loudon in late June, using strategy against the rain to become the youngest winner in the history of NASCAR, at 19 years and 35 days.

Some fans may say the victory wasn’t earned because he won it when he stayed out while the leaders pitted for fuel, which is very much the same way David Reutimann won at Charlotte, but I say it’s legit because they outsmarted the competition, even though they weren’t the fastest. Strategy is just as important to succeed as having a fast racecar.

My pick for most exciting/craziest/unexpected finish goes to Brad Keselowski’s win at Talladega in April. Brad, running in only his fifth career Cup race, led only the final lap as he pushed and shoved his way past Carl Edwards, who ended up careening into the fence in a spectacular wreck.

David Reutimann, or Rooty-Tooty as I like to call him, won his first race in a rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 in May, and with that win, almost made the Chase, ultimately coming up short. Outgoing Roush driver Jamie McMurray had one more win left in him before leaving for Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing, taking the fall race at Talladega in another wild finish that saw both Ryan Newman and Mark Martin tumbling and flying upside down in the final laps. The victory was McMurrays first since July 2007 at Daytona.

Brian Vickers had a great run up to the Chase, racking up the top-tens and even winning at Michigan in August, which put him in the Chase for the first time in his career, but once the 10-race playoffs started, he fizzled, with no laps led, and no top-tens.

Drivers that experienced disappointing seasons include Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, David Ragan, and Clint Bowyer, who all went winless in 2009. Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards (who won a series-high nine races in 2008) both failed to visit victory lane in 2009, but both made the Chase nevertheless.

With the drivers celebrating in Las Vegas for the first time (instead of the usual ceremony in New York City), 2009 is over with, and we now wait anxiously for the next seasons engines to roar to life once again. Only 77 more days until the 2010 Daytona 500!

I just say that Hip Hop Rap artist Soulja Boy has a new release called The World is Yours.

He has his own channel on youtube and all you have to do is search for his name and you’ll find tons of videos made by him.

I was thinking the other day for the newest artists here on youtube.

I have an idea that you might like.

It involves fashion.

All you interns out there, who are starting out in the fashion industry in New York City, you might want to send a piece to some of these new STARS on youtube.

They can advertise you’re work for free and make sure you have a link set up to a website with you’re designs on it, to order.

It’s an idea, not sure how great it will work but hey!

It gives you mass coverage around the world.

It’s a known fact that most fans love to WEAR the same things that their favorite artists do, so it was an idea that I had while dreaming early this morning.

Russ & Daughters makes great pickles. Sour, with a corona of heat around the edge of each bite.

Russ & Daughters makes great pickles. Sour, with a corona of heat around the edge of each bite.

That’s a pickle.

Russ & Daughters is one of the remnants of the late 19th/early 20th centuries still living in the early 21st: they and Katz’s Deli (packed with tourists as I sidled by) are among the few outposts of the great Jewish neighborhood on the Lower East Side, each nailed into a corner on Houston.

They’re both north of the Williamsburg Bridge, and a few blocks beyond Delancey—does this make them a part of the East Village rather than the LES? I’m no umpire, here, but they’re tugged from behind by the LES; the other side of Houston heads toward a city far beyond the modesty of the LES.

Or former modesty. The Lower East Side is, as everywhere in Manhattan, bending under the influx of money and cool. Not completely—there are sites in the LES and even the East Village which are more rather than less dodgy, and few would argue that the F and JMZ lines are among the city’s best—but gentrification creeps on.

It’s Manhattan. The desire for the Next Great Deal will always out.

I shouldn’t romanticize either the East Village or the LES. I’ve been in some of those apartments, and they’re awful: tiny, dark, and likely to lack basic amenities (such as, say, a sink in the bathroom). The streets are close together, so lower level windows likely never see sun. And twenty-five years ago ‘Alphabet City’ was a warning against trespassing beyond First.

But they (and the Bowery—why not?) used to be places. Not always good places, but there was something more to them than just. . . well, money.

Money is dull. Don’t get me wrong—I could certainly use more of it—but in and of itself it all-too-often adds nothing but that which caters to it. It doesn’t have to be that way, but money makes it too easy to be lazy in one’s tastes. What can I get? What can I buy? What is everyone else getting and buying?

Lack of money is never dull. Poverty or fear thereof can certainly dull one’s sensibilities, especially in a city (or a country) where money is IT!, but sometimes, sometimes, the lack of money drives those so lacking to seek pleasures and meanings beyond that literal coin of the realm.

Again, I shouldn’t romanticize: So many of those who lived in and constituted the history of these neighborhoods scuffled and hustled and did whatever they could to escape those places. They wanted the money they saw flowing from the pockets of those living further uptown. And my own skepticism of community ought to force me to scrape away the sepia from what could be a violent and oppressive past.

But I miss what was there, what is gone. It’s in large measure the cheap nostalgia of the passer-by: the one who strolls through and marvels and doesn’t have to live in the dim and the dank.

But there was life beyond—within—the dim and the dank, a life unseen by the mere passer-by. The people who lived in these neighborhoods were visible in the streets, but there was something more which connected these people to the tenements and narrow streets and one another.

Perhaps it’s still there, or somewhere, in this city. Perhaps I need to open my eyes and see what’s here, now. There is always something more.

As I stared into the vast abyssal plain of my soul last night, contemplating exactly what’s wrong with me- and what motivation I might have for spending all my time hanging out in and photographing cemeteries lately- a sudden peal of cheerful music rose from the hidden backyards of these Matthews Model Flats here in moon kissed Astoria.

It drew me out, onto the fire escape. Then I came back in for my camera. Sorry for the shaky video, but this was so weird.

The whirring and buzzing sound in the second video is a guy on the next block working on his house.

“This year we have been forced to call all hands on deck, to fight the monster of ignorance, illiteracy, homelessness, and the spirit of lack. This year, I am proud to return to my first home where as a child I experienced a life of instability. I was Born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens. Now the Book Bank Foundation movement and I are here for a re-birth of the spirit of the lost, lonely, and forgotten. Our scale is small but our size is big. Our hearts and passion for helping is bigger than the disease of homelessness and illiteracy. This year we had to take a step back in order to push the movement forward. Shelter from the Streets will continue to bring resources, inspiration and light to the people.”- Glenn Toby, Founder of The Book Bank Foundation.

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, my favorite blogs at nymag.com haven’t been posting stuff

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, my favorite blogs at nymag.com haven’t been posting stuff recently. They’re back tomorrow, but I can’t wait until then. I have no patience. I also have nothing else to do but wait and I hate waiting. Waiting makes me feel homicidal.

You know how everyone has a morning routine? Well, the first thing I do when I wake up is check my e-mail, delete all of the ones with pointless jobs that are oddly considered a match with my experience, then check Daily Intel, Vulture, and The Cut. This helps me go about my useless, hungover day. And now that I have nothing to read from New York’s blogs, I’ve been all screwed up in the head.
