part of the difficult process of coming to terms about leaving NY is knowing i’ll be leaving a great network of friends who have become like family to me. after dad’s passing and A, E + kids moving to Taiwan, it’s been really hard to come to terms with not having an anchor in NY. A+E were my anchor. for better or for worse, they were my NY anchor. after dad’s passing, i’ve had to reevaluate a lot of things, one of them being the definition of family. and without my own, i’ve looked to my close friends to provide a sense of familial connection. but even though my friends are great and welcoming and supportive and have made a lot of room in their lives for me, it’s still just not the same.

Ay invited me to have thanksgiving with them. as much as i love their company, spending thanksgiving day with them is a bit too much. and for the first time in a long time, S+E are not having their usual orphan’s thanksgiving. M says we’ll really be orphans this year. that rings very true for me. A+L also invited me to have thanksgiving dinner with them. she said if i decided that day that where i wanted to go isn’t where i wanted to go anymore, i am welcome to join them. she’s amazingly intuitive. i love her very much. over the years she’s become like my other older sister, always thinking of me, looking out for me. it’s been very heartening to have her in my life.

so when i leave ny, i’ll have to recreate this semblance of family all over again. how will i do that? it scares me.

Mientras “Bella” ordenó sashimi platter y the king crab, “Edward the vamp ” tomó comida esta vez pidiendo Kobe beef skewers y esparragos.

High schools in New York that have higher percentages of poor African-American and Hispanic students

High schools in New York that have higher percentages of poor African-American and Hispanic students have been receiving the lowest marks, according to the New York Times. African-Americans and Hispanics make up about 77 percent of A high schools in New York, but 90 percent in schools that got C’s or worse.

The study was meant to equalize differences among student bodies. According to Philip Vaccaro, the grades were designed to be as “demographically neutral” as possible. Schools are measured only against those with students scoring similarly on tests.

My suggestions for improving schools with higher percentages of minorities are:

Schools should set a high standard for their students to meet. When there are students who need extra help then the teachers should motivate them to better themselves. When people work together, it makes getting better grades easier.

Offer after-school tutoring from teachers and peers

Tailor teaching methods to attract student from that culture. For example, the students could teach learn a lesson through music they like, by writing a poem or lyrics and pairing it with a song

As a lover of the sweet ant ooey gooey. I’ve always wondered what makes a cheesecake New York style. I’d always thought New York-style meant that the cheesecake had no topping on it or inside. Today I asked 2 New Yorkers who each told me that New York style cheesecakes are always baked and not prepared cold.

Upon further investigation, I learned that cheesecakes weren’t (and aren’t) always prepared with cream cheese. Cheesecakes humble origins began from cottage cheese. Today people make them with everything from ricotta (Italian-style), neufchatel, and even goat cheese.

Come ogni altra cosa, anche Natale a New York e’ amplificato, ingigantito e ubiquitario.

Recently, someone was complaining to me that the photos they were having printed at a well-known pro

Recently, someone was complaining to me that the photos they were having printed at a well-known pro-lab were coming out brown toned.

I asked, “Do you mean ‘muddy’?”

They said muddy was a good description. They said the colors were all off, dull, and washed out, and so forth.

I recognized right off the bat what they did. They shot in Adobe RGB and sent the Adobe RGB file off to their lab. They didn’t tell their lab to convert to sRGB, or the lab’s “color profile”, and so the lab just printed them. (Remember, your lab will do what you tell them to do.)

Although printers are now coming on the market that support a wide gamut of color space, MOST printers are so much more narrow that Adobe RGB, and Adobe RGB was not designed with photography in mind. Okay, neither was sRBG, but sRBG is a safer bet when printing.

So, if you do not want to take the time to learn about color management, at least set everything you own to sRGB. Shoot in sRGB, edit in sRGB, and send it to your lab as a sRBG file. Yes, it is a smaller color space, but you’ll be more pleased with the results than trying to print an Adobe RBG file. You other option is to talk to your lab when you submit your files and tell them what color space you used, and ask them to convert. They MIGHT charge a FEE! Just beware.

Your other, and better option, is to learn how to manage color profiles.

Deluge was the debut feature film by a 23 year-old with the enviable name of Felix E. Feist. Sounds

Deluge was the debut feature film by a 23 year-old with the enviable name of Felix E. Feist. Sounds like a Marx Brothers pseudonym, but it’s the real name of the son of an MGM sales manager, who had an almost-there career in movies until he switched to TV production in the 50s. Deluge was believed to have been lost, until a print surfaced in Rome – accordingly, the suriving version of the film is dubbed into Italian. It is noteworthy mostly because of its spectacular scenes of tidal waves destroying Manhattan, proof that Roland Emmerich didn’t invent the wheel: he just enlarged and nuked it.

The film clips along at an alarming rate. Before the main characters have even been introduced, we’re into a montage of baffled scientists, international news reports of earthquakes, military aircraft being returned to base, preachers predicting the end of the world; this all establishes the communication networks, the babble of opinions that tells us this is global catastrophe affecting even the biggest structures of nation states.

The onscreen declaration at the start really dates this film:

Deluge is a tale of fantasy, an adventure in speculation, a vivid epic pictorialisation of an author’s imaginative flight. We the producers present it now purely for your entertainment, remembering full well God’s covenant with Noah.

Yeah, because nothing kicks off a bit of pure entertainment like a Bible reference.

Note to Roland Emmerich: in Deluge, the buildings start falling – within thirty seconds, millions are dead and the entire Western coast of North America has crumbled into the sea. The radio announces: “Indescribable disaster is causing havoc everywhere. There’s no cause for panic. Shut off all gas items.” Now that’s efficient.

There then follows a remarkable sequence in which all of New York is washed away by the sea. This footage was never lost with the rest of the movie (I wonder if it was a flood which washed all the prints away), because it was reused in the Dick Tracy serial, and in King of the Rocket Men. YouTube helpfully has a clip, though the quality is not stellar:

I wonder if the miniature sets were built especially for the film, or whether RKO had some leftovers from the same year’s King Kong that needed knocking down. It looks like an expensive miniature set, and presumably was destroyed all in one go. The earth trembles, buildings explode into chalky oblivion, and the sea rushes in to wipe out any last traces of life. After this rather definitive destruction, the film follows the plight of survivors. Although a couple of months has passed, within a couple of minutes of screentime, they’re fighting to the death over Claire (Peggy Shannon), who has taken the trouble to wash ashore wearing only her undies.

Shannon has an unhappy biography – a former Ziegfeld girl, she was signed up by Paramount in 1931 as a new “It” girl to replace Clara Bow (who had suffered a nervous breakdown), she drank herself to death in 1941. A couple of weeks later husband shot himself dead on the spot where he’d found her. Incidentally, Feist’s ex-wife Lisa Howard, an actress who became a hugely successful journalist and newscaster, also killed herself in tragic circumstances after suffering a miscarriage. Feist died of cancer a couple of weeks later. Wow, so much death. Back to happier business. In Deluge, Shannon gives a fine account of a self-reliant and feisty (see what I did there?) woman lumbered with the tiresome burden of being the last woman in sight. She sets up temporary home with Martin, who has been separated from his wife and children in the chaos, believing them to be dead.

Elsewhere, life is picking up again, in a sequence of vigenettes from small town life in places where banks, barbers and families are trying to reinstate their old communities. The Italian dub might even allow today’s viewers the fantasies that this is some apocalyptic neo-realist drama. But only briefly. Martin’s wife Helen (Lois Wilson) is still alive and hoping to be reunited with him, but Tom, yet another survivor, informs her that a new law (how quickly people take the chance to pass new laws in the wake of catastrophe!) commands that women of marrying age must marry. Ah, romance.

Tom has other things to take care of, too, leading a mob against the cruel Bellamy gang, who’ve been raping and looting like only a post-apocalyptic all-male crowd of burly guys can. Thus is dramatised the struggle between the opposing factions of society’s remnants – women get the raw deal: stuck between forced marriage and random attacks by randy thugs, they become the fetish objects through which the male survivors differentiate themselves from one another. There’s some nicely ambiguous drama when Helen and Martin are reunited at the end. Claire refuses to give him up just because his wife turns out to be alive – it’s not as if there’s still a church around to give a crap (I’m paraphrasing her words), and for a while it looks as though they’re about to find accommodation as a threeway family, but it all ends with Claire swimming off to sea. An earlier comment that, unable to become an aviator, she became a professional swimmer tells us that Claire is not necessarily swimming to her death, but it looks for all the world like a suicidal martyrdom, as if her brand of trouser-wearing femininity can’t be assimilated with the newest world order. She did earlier escape from one unsatisfactory settlement to another by stripping off and swimming to the next port of call, so I like to think she’s going to keep going until she finds a refashioned society that can incorporate her desires. In any event, God’s covenant with Noah isn’t helping much.

Pace University hosts online chats about every six months, and last Thursday, there was one concerni

Pace University hosts online chats about every six months, and last Thursday, there was one concerning the Publishing degree they offer. It was supposed to be from 6:00 to 7:30. I got out of class at 5:15 thinking I had nothing but time. Logging onto the site, I realized that the chat had already started. Confused at their early start, I nonetheless jumped in. It was only about forty-five minutes later that I realized that there is a time zone difference between Minnesota and New York. Sigh. I’m so on top of things.

The chat was fairly informative, plus I felt super high-tech chatting away with uber worldly New Yorkers. In the chat room was myself, 2 admissions employees, a professor from the department and the director of the department.

I learned some semi-interesting facts. For one, the Publishing M.S. degree at Pace is celebrating its 25 anniversary. I didn’t particularly care, but the Pace staff made sure to emphasize the point.

All applications are looked at holistically. There’s no writing sample unlike the applications for other universities, so my $70 fee, resume, personal statement, two letters of recommendation, undergraduate transcripts and the GRE score need to be awesome. Admissions said they were looking for about a 3.0 GPA or higher and about a 1000 on the GRE minimum. That reminded me that I can’t remember my GRE score exactly, which is just perfect.

At one point, I asked, “what’s the difference between pace’s publishing ms and the editing and writing or publishing and writing degrees of other universities?” I got several responses. Admissions said, “The program prepares stresses publishing, not writing and trains one to work as middle management and execs in the industry. Grads who are successful in the industry are now coming back and teaching courses,” while the director of the program said, “The Publishing degree stresses publishing. All aspects of the industry. It includes marketing, book distribution, magazine circulation, academic publishing and editing. It is not an English degree.”

I was excited when another potential incoming student asked if the degree was right for them if they wanted to be an editor. I listened up, especially as the woman took the question right off of my own list. One professor told her: “This program prepares you to be an editor but it also prepares you in ALL aspects of publishing so that you can move in other areas of publishing if you desire. This program gives one great mobility. You can more from books, magazines, newspapers and the new technologies and from editing to marketing to production etc. You are not locked in to one area.”

This is the link to their scholarship page. Departmental scholarships have to be applied for. Only the graduate scholarship is given at the time of acceptance. A GRE of 1100 is the minimum for the graduate scholarship. There is not a “first-come-first-served” basis. There are only 2 internships available.

There was a lot of info about their online publishing program. Apparently Pace is the only university to offer such a thing (for good reason, I personally feel).

Admissions mentioned that Pace operates under rolling admission: “we get you a decision within 3 to 4 weeks of receiving your complete application. That decision includes your admission scholarship.”

And then everything went a little south. 2 very promising students popped up, one from Bangladesh, both ridiculously experienced and smart. The transcript of the whole chat is in my pages.

This poor old hobo wants a Christmas visit for New York City from Santa Claus. I will watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and try to spread a little cheer to the greatest city in this world! New York folks has had so many troubles, even a politician can’t promise them a Merry Christmas!

I think it would be swell to have a New Orleans Cajun Christmas party for you folks! They got a gift wtih music from the “big easy” that can even make a funeral procession a celebration time to know your family can be happy your departed are dancing in heaven ”When the Saints come marching in”! If I have one wish, it would be to see this country really celebrate our diversity with fun and music from our native American nations to our newest Russian citizens! Al Gore should hang out with our American nations to learn how to live in harmony with the earth. I have to tell you don’t mess with a Cajun or a Cossack! They got proud traditions, just like our New Yorkers.

Don’t get blue or upset that things are getting worse, with more folks out of work, and losing their homes. Even hoboes celebrate Christmas, and we don’t have much but our freedom! That’s enough right now. Pabst Blue Ribbon at the Bonduel Antler Club is only a buck, and I will buy a round for you folks in the best part of America, NorthEast Wisconsin! Cheese curds, bratwurst, beer, and a good time is here waiting for you.

Sorry you folks in New York have to put up with some kind of nonsense trial for the guys that wanted you all to drop dead. I think the best thing would be to invite all them television bums to stay away from your court house. I don’t want anyone to hear a word them cowardly killers say. It’s your town, and you should have a right to keep the reporters busy at the local bar talking to the real people that count.

Santa rides the rails once in a while, and I will try to track him down pronto! Santa is coming to New York soon.

I’m headed back to NY tomorrow for the holiday weekend, and my mind is already racing with all

I’m headed back to NY tomorrow for the holiday weekend, and my mind is already racing with all of the restaurants and coffee shops that will be nearby. During a trip this past spring I was introduced to Grey Dog’s Coffee on University Place. The vibe of the shop was laid-back, the coffee was super strong, and the scenery reminded me of my other home:

Atlanta on the table top

The tabletop had an extensively detailed map of Atlanta, complete with image representation. It was a cool collision of my 2 worlds – and it occurred by happenstance. Another funny, but not completely random occurrence is the focus on Grey dogs. I own a dog named Gray (which was part of the reason my friend chose this coffee shop for our meeting place). Other aspects of the decor reminded me of doggy back in Atlanta:

not the cutest pooch

My little lamb is quite a bit cuter not quite as grey:

I’ve only visited Grey Dog’s Coffee once, but I am left with fond memories and a yearning to go back. Maybe I’ll be able to make it this weekend…..

I spent this past weekend with MH in New York. Good times were had shopping and eating our weight

I spent this past weekend with MH in New York. Good times were had shopping and eating our weight’s worth of hot dogs, gyros, cheese fries, pizza, and halal teriyaki chicken. Man, I do love me some street vendor food.

We also saw Stomp, which was totally unlike any other show I’ve seen in that there was no dialogue or soundtrack or raucous dance number. Basically, it’s a group of 10 performers who use their bodies and ordinary objects (kitchen sink, brooms, trash, etc.) to make these sick rhythms. It sounds kinda not cool when I write about it, but the intricacy and precision was incredible.

The one sour note of the trip was our trip back to Boston. We booked our tickets through Mega Bus, which I had heard was much more reputable than the Fung Wah Chinatown bus. I mean, people really made it sound like the Chinatown buses required passengers to bring their our stools and frequently spontaneously combusted on the side of the road.

Anyway, we were supposed to leave Penn Station at 1:15pm and arrive at Back Bay Station at 5:30. We didn’t leave New York until a full 2 hours after our scheduled departure time.

I’m not really clear as to what happened because no one at Mega Bus would take responsibility for the screw up or give us a straight answer, but it seemed like the bus driver for the bus scheduled to leave at 12:45 never showed up. So at 1:15, the powers that be decided to give the bus designated for us to them. I didn’t have a problem with this, especially since I figured that another bus would come along shortly.

So we waited.

And waited.

And I have to say that the 60 or so of us standing in the 45 degree weather were by and large pretty courteous; most of our grumblings and cursings were kept to a minimum. But by 2:45, people were starting to demands answers, and they flooded the customer service line to figure out what was going on.

At one point, a person in line was assured that a bus was a mere 7 minutes away.

It was not.

Later, an operator told another person that there were 2 Mega Buses around the corner from Penn Station.

There were not.

Finally, customer service stopped picking up our calls altogether and simply forwarded them to a message inbox. But not before having this conversation with a woman about 5 people behind me:

Woman: Ma’am, we’ve been waiting for over an hour and a half, and we just want to know when the bus to Boston is supposed to get here.

Tool: There should be one there soon. The bus just got stuck in traffic.

W: But that doesn’t make sense because 6 of your buses going to other cities have been through Penn Station in the last hour.

T: I’m sorry, but I can’t hear you. You’re breaking up. (Disconnect.)

Breaking up? What the eff? We were standing still in the middle of Manhattan, where even people holding a tube of aluminum foil can get reception. I couldn’t believe that someone actually used that line in real life. On the list of telephone conversation cliches, it’s right up there with the “emergency” call during a first date.

Eventually we made it back at 7:30 on a janky bus that was definitely not one of Mega Bus’.

Moral of the Story: Use Bolt Bus.

Today was pretty uneventful. My morning walk was down to the dock and back. Nothing spectacular to photograph. The sky was kind of boring. Clear. No color. No clouds. And, it wasn’t cold enough to make the canal steam. Oh, well.

There is no snow in the forecast either. (And people in Utah and Idaho teased me about moving here. You’ve already had more snow, but less precipitation than we’ve had. Oh, and colder temperatures. ) That’s fine… we’ll get our snow and I’ll gladly shovel the driveway. I’ll post the photos when it happens.

“…New York was no mere city. It was instead an infinitely romantic notion, the mysterious nexus of all love and money and power, the shining and perishable dream itself. To think of ‘living’ there was to reduce the miraculous to the mundane; one does not ‘live’ at Xanadu.” –Joan Didion, Goodbye to All That

I love Joan Didion. I had very little to do at work today, so I printed off a copy of an essay of hers I’d never read before and started reading, underlining my favorite bits out of habit (though there’s no pending classroom discussion that will require me to refer back to my markings). Little did I know, it’s about being 22 or 23 and working your first job–though she worked at a magazine, a job I still hope to have soon despite the flailing industry.

It makes me feel very young.

One of the articles, entitled “Restroom Advertising“, breaks down a study conducted by Media Life. This article tells the results of research done surrounding the demographics of people who use restrooms in 14 locations across the country.
