Kelowna Family Photographer ~ I met this family up at beautiful Knox Mountain! They haven't had a family photo taken of all them for 15 years and they were excited to get one done . It was raining lightly the day we had planned but we decided to go ahead anyways. I am glad we did because the light was amazing! Thank you for asking me to capture your family. I love taking a more natural approach to photographing newborns, not a lot of poses, a couple of different set-ups and I usually do a lot of photos with the parents & family. I loved spending time with her and her Mommy, watching her interact with us, holding her… Babies can be difficult in that I haven’t held a newborn in so very long~ you think about how fragile they are and that fear that you’re going to break them all comes rushing back. I love meeting the family members of past clients and the M family was no different. As they welcomed the birth of their second daughter, they called they studio to set up a newborn session. M’s older sis, K was shy and sweet when I first arrived but warmed up as soon as she got to dress up in her Easter best. Baby M was an extremely light sleeper and didn’t like being undressed much, but we were still able to capture some amazing moments and family portraits in between awake moments. Enjoy!

Lachlan Anthony Dunn - 14 days

Lachlan finally arrived on 6th March at 7:33pm. It was not like he was over due but after capturing Mum and Dad’s pregnancy at 34 weeks I was anticipating his arrival. My impatience and the down side for me of a Bump to Baby Package – I cannot wait!!!

Lachlan came on day 14 and proved to be quite a challenge. He loved been wrapped in a bundle and let you know if he was not happy otherwise. He was also a pooing machine! Now I have had my fair share of poo but never have I experienced this much since another little Lachlan visited me around the same time in 2012!!!!

In the end we captured him in a number of different poses and even got him in Daddy’s tool box.

Congrats MariClare and Mark, he is a firecracker!

As many of you probably know, my family and I recently made a decision to stay in Sherwood Park for the foreseeable future, and I hope this means that you will keep me as your photographer. Over the past month, I’ve been slowly but surely working on a few different packages to offer my wonderfully valuable clients. The first is the Baby’s First Year package, and I’m really excited about the prospect of selling a few of these, because watching the changes in kidlets is definitely one of my favourite things about my job.

5 sessions: newborn (in first two weeks), 3-month, 6-month, 9-month and 1-year/cake smash

Session fees total: $550 (regular $750)

10% off all print and digital packages

First year PLUS package

6 sessions: maternity, newborn (in first two weeks), 3-month, 6-month, 9-month and 1-year/cake smash

Session fees total: $700 (regular $900)

15% off all print and digital packages

Ultimate first year package

7 sessions: maternity, newborn (in first two weeks), 3-month, 6-month, 9-month and 1-year/cake smash, family session

Looking Back- becoming a Baby Photographer

It’s easy for me to look back on past work and be very critical of myself. In terms of knowing how to use my lights, pose a baby to look natural-but-really-we-know-it-wasn’t-natural, fix those little skin imperfections, polish the entire image, I have worked hard to improve those skills. I have several photos from the beginning of my official photography career that I wish I could “do-over”, Where the baby looks awkward because of my posing, Where the lighting is too bright or too dim…. BUT- then today I came across a few images from BEFORE I actually decided to start a photography business, when it was just me and my camera and a close friend or a cousin’s baby girl in front of a window; BEFORE I put pressure on myself to meet a certain standard; BEFORE I was trying to get specific poses; BEFORE I was comparing myself to other photographers; in short, BEFORE I was overthinking this whole thing, and I was simply taking photographs for the pure enjoyment of it all.

Don’t get me wrong. I still enjoy it. I still REALLY enjoy photography, baby photography in particular, but I look back at these images and realize that maybe I don’t need to be so self critical, maybe I just need to relax and enjoy the process. I don’t know if it’s obvious to the viewer, but there is something simple, spontaneous, uncomplicated and natural about these photos. My “middle” body of work lacks this simplicity- and now with more experience I am trying to step back to that simplicity- although with a bit more technical experience and skill to ensure that I get the images consistently.

I could fuss about slightly imperfect skin (which is actually a much discussed topic among photogs I follow recently… if a newborn isn’t perfect enough, then who is???) I could fuss that the lighting could be better, but REALLY, I just want to enjoy babies SIMPLY. NATURALLY. PEACEFULLY. Keeping that simplicity in mind, here is one of my favourite recent images:

February 7, 2013 we were blessed with our second child. A beautiful baby girl. I can’t believe that she is already almost 2 months old! I figure what better way to get back into blogging than to tell the story of my own baby through pictures. As a photographer it is my job to make each portrait both a story and a work of art. As I said our daughter is our second child, we made extra sure to include our now three year old son Julian in every part of preparing for the new baby. We took him to every appointment, and he was there at the ultrasound where we found out that we would be having a girl. Since we already had picked out her name we told him right away that his sister would be named Grace. He didn’t want to give us back the Ultrasound pictures he insisted that they were “his baby Grapes” lol

My amazing husband took these portraits for me in Netherland CO

Grace Irene Mae Tavera, which for those of you who, like me, love to know the meaning of names means “Great Grace, Peace and Truth”, was born February 7, 2013 at 8:10am. She was 7lbs. 4oz. (tiny in comparison to our 8lb 9oz son!) and 20.75 inches. Our healthy happy baby girl looks like me with the exception of her nose and slightly darker skin tone. (Grace 1 and 2 weeks old)

She has already become my little product model. Several people gave me beautiful handmade items to use in her portraits. (If anyone else would like her to model anything for your website just let me know!!)

Julian would not stop running back and forth and getting into my shot. Of course at the time I was annoyed but now I actually really love this one with him in the background!
