“An internet troll, someone who posts deliberately provocative comments on a blog, group or message

“An internet troll, someone who posts deliberately provocative comments on a blog, group or message board with the intention of aggravating the other members and causing disruption”

The topic of “Internet Trolls” has entered my thoughts for the last two weeks since starting a Facebook group in support of a lovely lady who has recently been in the news “Katie Piper”. After only a few short hours of starting the Facebook group I was inundated by offensive comments that overwhelmed the groups wall (for those of you who don’t use Facebook the wall is where comments are left by the group members.) Of course I had the administrative powers to delete the offensive comments and block the members (trolls) from the group, but there were so many comments in such a small space it would of taken me hours to do it by myself. I recruited members to become moderators of the group and help me tackle the trolls and their disgusting comments.

I was always aware of Internet Trolls (aka Flamers, Haters,Spammers & so much more) being a member of a few message boards, forums & groups, although admittedly I often lost interest in most of them. I sometimes laughed at as well as argued with the Trolls who left messages on groups I was a member of . They never really bothered me until I started my own group and I had to deal with them day in and day out.

This afternoon I logged on to my Facebook and immediately realised I had 3 messages in my inbox, to most members of Facebook this is a joyful occasion (Oh wow, I have a message!), I knew straight away before I opened them that it was going to be from concerned members of my Facebook group: “I think Katie Piper is still beautiful!” bringing to my attention that Trolls had been invading my group and leaving offensive comments. My fears were right the first message I opened in my inbox was:

“hey just been reading some of the comments on katie pipers group page, and those guys seriously need to be blocked. i understand your not around all the time to delete posts etc, but if you need a hand then allow me. im so angry right now with their comments and they need to go asap!
anyways sorry for the rant, well done for sorting the group out
hope your ok x “

After reading the message and taking a long (a very long) deep breath I proceeded to my group and was greeted by a tirade of abusive and sarcastic comments from “wannabe comedians”. Unfortunately none of my moderators were online (as we all have lives away from the computer unlike these dreadful Trolls) so I had to go through pages and pages of comments whilst deleting and blocking the offensive messages and it really (yes really) isn’t as easy as it sounds!

Right guys, Sorry I didn’t realise I’d rambled on for so long.. after this morning/afternoon’s surprise attack by the trolls I started to look for information on the internet about them and found this website:

http://www.flayme.com/troll/

It really is worth a read (even just for the LOL’s), provides some relevant information for people who moderate groups as well as explaining what one of those dreadful trolls is.

Keep smiling and have a good weekend!

Ok, so you caught me talking about the pipes. I may have mentioned HYPOTHETICALLY that drilling out

Ok, so you caught me talking about the pipes. I may have mentioned HYPOTHETICALLY that drilling out the cat was an idea SOMEONE had AT SOME TIME suggested that SOME OTHER SOMEONE might do to ENJOY THE SHIT out of their bike.

So…… WINK WINK, I may know who the latter someone is and he might have a blog. A blog a lot like this one!

I realize only a few dozen people read this blog, but if you rat me out, I’ll find out. You know I will. I’ll find you and I’ll smack the crap out of the spouse of the lawyer that makes you testify about what you read here on this blog. That’s you! Or “that’s ME!” he would say as he reads this entry to the jury. “Oh God, not my wife! She’s already got me wearing the horns because I spend all my time at the office!” … that lawyer might say.

SO!

I’m going to upload some videos, probably sunday, with all the work I do on saturday. I’m raping the service manual and hoping to pin down all the little what-if’s (and I’m not bugging anyone on rec.mc or rec.mc.hd since they’ve had quite enough of my speculations and hypotheticals).

Sunday should be in the 60’s and sunny. I won’t be able to lament not having those hand deflectors.

I’d like to give a proper nod to McGill’s Warehouse over in northern Cali. Emailed them from across the land and asked a few specific, unusual things, and they were glad to accommodate me. I love when that happens.

Anyone know a good scrap metal purchaser? One that deals in platinum? Hahaha… DIE, CAT! DIE!

And then I’ll be futzing with the baffles. Technical proposal to come tomorrow if I can swing it. You know me – it’s gonna be trial and error.

Eweka : news.ipv6.eweka.nl – 120 jours.  -> Lent mais bonne rétention

Xs4all : newszilla6.xs4all.nl – 18 jours. -> Super rapide

XSNews : reader.ipv6.xsnews.nl – 107 jours. -> n’a jamais fonctionner pour ma part

Utiliser une passerelle IPV4 to IPV6

Shenanigans on the forums again reminded me of this old chestnut..- a parody of a Gilbert and Sullivan song.

Tom Holt, from a newsgroup posting dated 1998/03/07

I am the very model of a usenet personality.
I intersperse obscenity with tedious banality.
Addresses I have plenty of, both genuine and ghosted too,
On all the countless newgroups that my drivel is cross-posted to.
Your bandwidth I will fritter with my whining and my snivelling,
And you’re the one who pays the bill, downloading all my drivelling.
My enemies are numerous, and no-one would be blaming you
For cracking my head open after I’ve been rudely flaming you.

I hate to lose an argument (by now I should be used to it).
I wouldn’t know a valid point if I was introduced to it.
My learning is extensive but consists of mindless trivia,
Designed to fan my ego, which is larger than Bolivia.
The comments that I vomit forth, disguised as jest and drollery,
Are really just an exercise in unremitting trollery.
I say I’m plain and simple, but that’s merely lies and vanity,
The gibberings of one who’s at the limits of his sanity.

If only I could get a life, as many people tell me to;
If only Mom could find a circus freak-show she could sell me to;
If I go off to Zanzibar to paint the local scenery;
If I lose all my fingers in a mishap with machinery;
If I survive to twenty, which is somewhat problematical;
If what I post was more mature, or slightly more grammatical;
If I could learn to spell a bit, and maybe even punctuate;
Would I still be the loathsome and objectionable punk you hate?

But while I have this tiresome urge to prance around and show my face,
It simply isn’t safe for normal people here in cyberspace.
To stick me in Old Sparky and turn on the electricity
Would be a fitting punishment for all my plain simplicity.

For this post we are going to delve a little deeper into the previous article about Walmart training

For this post we are going to delve a little deeper into the previous article about Walmart training FUD and dodgy PCworld sales reps (in respect of the issue of – who are you talking to?) . I have often mentioned comp.os.linux.advocacy and here is one of its regulars Hadron.

Hadron describes himself as a “freelance SW contractor who relies pretty much 100% on Debian Linux to do his work” so lets see what happens when they notice the previous article being posted in C.O.L.A.

The only people who “laugh” here are the COLAtards who “laugh” at Windows users. Funnily enough, the more aggressive, dumber ones like Koehlmann and Ahlstrom are actually closed source SW developers for … yup. Windows. We (those you listed) laugh at the hypocrisy and the idiocy of the COLA freetards. It’s like a daily show : for free.

Well Im pleased he can laugh (although on the reply I did state I did not find anything funny about Windows and merely I pitied a Vista user), I am also impressed that he can make so many claims without any evidence. Notice the word “freetard” as a way to insult? He sure sounds like a Linux user doesn’t he? Here’s some more from our “Linux user” Hadron:

The masses dont want Linux because Linux does NOT run the SW they use or think they need. Linux does not run most of latest games etc. People want that.

and how about this:

Err, because its fun. And correcting Colatards IS fun.

which is strange because he goes on to say:

No. I’m a freelance SW contractor who relies pretty much 100% on Debian Linux to do his work. Not many others in COLA can claim that. Don#t believe?

But before you start doubting Hadron, have a look at his piece of evidence which he claims will prove that he’s telling the truth:

Find a post from me saying Linux is shit. Go on. Dont just listen to the COlAtards. Think and research for yourself. I dare you. But being a COLAtard and a BN denizen you won’t : you’re too lazy, too stupid and too up Schestoputz’s arse to draw your OWN conclusions.

Well I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m convinced. After that earth shattering piece of information I think theres no doubt what so ever that Hadron is telling “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth”…..lol.

Unfortunately for Hadron, someone did quote him and evidenced this post of Hadron’s:

Except for the fact that Linux is shit for gaming : and young Ernst wants to play games. New games. Not Civ City version 1. And that Linux is notorious for not supporting wide varieties of sound cards : the whole audio subsystem is a mess.

So forcing me to do another addition to Hadron’s profile post. Hadron really does have issues with the truth doesnt he?

There are times when I think some of these “people” are really children. They seem to have no concept on how their posts sound to others and fall into some really basic traps. There was a lie placed about me on C.O.L.A which suggested that I claimed my IQ was greater than everyone else’s (obviously they provided no proof to back up their lie). Whilst that was a complete lie and I had no such conversation, I think in Hadrons case it may very well be true, I have honestly never met one of the MS-Faithful so ground breakingly slow as him. Even Andre Da Costa on a bad day would not make silly mistakes like that.

Talking of silly mistakes, a poster of C.O.LA called William, provides evidence that Hadron has said something quite different in another newsgroup (click the link at the end of this article to see the full post):

I’m a long term Windows user and programmer.

It would appear Hadron needs to learn his story else he will make more mistakes like this. It appears after the above comments Hadron has gone back to his Linux advocacy again:

I have a better idea : why dont you, Marti, Roy and the other loonies piss off and play with your toys while the rest of us continue to use and advocate good OSS SW like Gnome? You are insane. You hurt OSS. You hurt Linux.

So he advocates Gnome now? LOL. Can Hadron ever make his mind up? I think from the course of comments above you can really see who is harming what. Do you trust Hadron? Can you see any consistency in his views? I don’t need to make a comment, you can decide for yourself. I don’t think I will be adding anything more to Hadron’s profile, though check the comments section for any further updates on his ever changing stance and contradicting views.

So now we come (sadly) to the end of one of hopefully a few profiles on the COLA trolls. Its a shame that I can’t go into further detail but since Hadron is so shallow his posting habits mainly revolve around, insult, change subject, insult, change subject..all the while not answering questions put to him. Hadron is one of many who post claiming to be in favor of Linux yet disrupt the community, is this the actions of a proprietary firm paying for this behaviour? are these the actions of a proprietary developer terrified of the FOSS model or is it simply a bored young person who enjoys ruining things for people? I’ll let you decide.

As always, please see for yourself. I invite you to see him in action in the COLA newsgroup and I also invite you to read the entire discussion between myself and Hadron here: http://tinyurl.com/m5h63z

what is Usenet ? Explore Usenet – this is my next silly project. Until now highly depend upon Google search for past 4 years. Many of old senior UNIX administrators and system experts told me that usenet will provide extensive knowledge. But until now i din;t get chance to follow those knowledge rich newsgroups.

Now I got chance and funds to study about newsgroups and Usenet. So started self study along with my pal google and Wikipedia. I am surprised that still Usenet newsgroup are leading source providers in this search engine dominating world.

Here are some questions first I need to answer.

1.What is Usenet ?

2.What is newsgroup ?

3.how to access Usenet or how to access newsgroup ?

4.How much it costs or free ?

5.software requirements

6.Rules and regulation

I will update details related to above questions in my up comming posts. So stay tuned.

I believe he is on the NG simply to distort and fudge. Unfortunately Hadron (just like the LHC) doesn't quite do the job properly.

Or: The desperation of the proprietary shill

There has been many comments recently in regards to the increase in anti-linux FUD and shill posting. We’ve seen this take so many different forms, ignoring the challenge, saying downright lies or simply being vulgar to the point of ridiculous.

Twitter is a common (and in my opinion) important place to present this type of tactic since there is a majority of “average” users who may buy into it. Forums, as the average proprietary shiller has found out, there are now more Microsoft alternative users on them to stand up to the rubbish posted by a member of the Microsoft faithful.

Let me present one from a place some of my readers may never have visited: comp.os.linux.advocacy

Meet Hadron and just like his namesake he doesn’t seem to do his job very well. Now keep in mind he is not a Linux user (or maybe he is and his purpose is to prove how weak the counter argument is?) I believe though that Hadron is on the NG (probably in many guises) to fudge and distort the message of Linux and/or alternatives to Microsoft products. If you look at the COLA stats it shows Roy (from BN) as having the most posts (which is to be expected since he certainly does have a knowledge to contribute) and then you have Hadron. 500+ posts? And what points has he made against Linux or alternatives? It seems he spends most of his time fudging out the message of others with the comments like we will read shortly.

So without further ado, please enjoy some of Hadron’s classics, but please don’t laugh. He has a job to save, but just like his namesake the LHC he doesn’t quite get the result sought. At least his posts are cleaner than the usual MS faithful comment we get, but take note of the tone. Hadron is desperate to defend something and since he can’t do it with reasoned counter, he’s happy to do it with aggression.

“ I am astonished and begin to wonder if you’d sell your own children into slavery to suck up to a clueless arse…..”

“you ARE a sycophantic little suck up”

“You don’t think anyone really pays even the tiniest bit of attention to you loonies do you?!?!?!?!?”

“No you clueless moron”

“Christ – you’re starting to suck up more than Liarmutt.”

We will end on:

“You COLA freetards crack me up.”

P**ng in the COLA hen house seems to be one of the few supporters of Hadron?!?! According to "p***ng" though his name is "Hardon" or is that a freudian slip?

So there’s Hadron and his numerous Linux counters!?!?. Please keep in mind that all we are discussing is IT. Why do these people get so rude and angry? These people are supposed to be adults (but in the case of the next user, they may have other things, non IT related on their mind)

As you can see you are dealing with a poster of awesome intelligence and as always I encourage users to visit the newsgroup and see for yourselves in context. Maybe you can have your own Hadron experience? Like the other Microsoft Faithful we show here, vulgarity or rudeness is always the first port of call for a pro MS argument.

Before we finish, I’d briefly like to mention the poster “Pi**ing in the COLA Hen House” (handle censored for decency purposes) this poster is the double act for Hadron, although he seems a little disturbed with this posted on his message “it’s just your worthless ‘wet dream’ if you can still have one” Which is quite frightening when a typo (or maybe freudian slip) had him call his friend Hadron, “Hardon” Here’s “P***ng in A COLA Hen House” in action:

“What does Hardon have to do with this?”

“it’s just your worthless ‘wet dream’ if you can still have one”

Desperation by the MS faithful? I think so, I’d love to hear your opinions.

I urge anyone who reads this and has not tried an alternative to Microsoft products, to give it a go. Does Hadron sound like someone who has a quality counter to an alternative to Microsoft?

The beauty of this is, if you find a FOSS alternative is not suited to you then theres no harm done, it hasn’t cost you anything. Consider the alternatives to Microsoft you may already be enjoying: Firefox? OpenOffice? these are just a few of the packages you will find on your FOSS travels and whats better, no registration , no cost!

Do PG/MoBlock offer any peace of mind? Are they effective?

Before I begin what I hope will be an interesting article (for some), the purposes of this are two fold (1) to cover briefly two packages which you may or may not have heard of and (2) to try to comment (as best I can) on the position in regards to UK law.

Due to the world we live in today, I feel I have to stress that the text which follows is my opinion. It is not to be taken as fact or stated law (unless links are given, and then those links have the responsibility of claiming themselves as such or as me stating opinion) The best form of personal legal advice is always to acquire your own, the internet (and a personal blog) cannot be expected to act as a definitive guide to the nuances and “finer points” of individual cases.

Moving on, I feel its also important to clarify the Open Bytes position on piracy, lest I have the MS faithful throwing libelous accusations against myself or the site.

The Openbytes position on piracy is against it in any form. Ive often referred to the pirate as a train user who makes a journey without paying for a ticket, everyone else has to pay a higher price to allow for those who dont want to pay (or indeed dont feel they should) As Ive said on previous articles, I dont really want to get into a debate of the rights or wrongs of piracy.

I am quite sure that this article will win me no supporters, it sadly seems that its “fashionable” to infringe someones copyright and if there are any FOSS users who believe piracy is OK then Id ask you to consider how you would feel if a large proprietary firm took software released under the GPL, changed its asthetics and then sold it for billions. You cant have it both ways IMO. If you truly believe in the ethos of FOSS then you cant support/encourage/engage in piracy (IMO).

I think many of the readers here will draw a blank when the package MoBlock is mentioned. Moblock is the Linux version of Peer Guardian for Windows.

So whats Peer Guardian? I hear some say. A package that blocks defined IP addresses (or range of address) Its a popular package amongst our BT protocol sharers who believe in some way that this package helps them do as they please. The belief of its users that it is effective in blocking out the RIAA, BPI or whatever is somewhat amazing. Heres my opinion why Moblock/Peer Guardian really are not as effective as you may believe.

Whilst its true MoBlock/Peer Guardian will block transfers between you and an IP address it believes belong to the IP harvesters, I have a couple of questions that you may want to consider, but before you do and for those that dont know, I would like to explain that Moblock/PG (Peer Guardian) are used predominatley by users of P2P networks who want to share files but dont want to be “caught” doing so. (IMO) Of course anyone who has more than a passing interest in computers will (i hope) agree that the entire theory is completely flawed, but incase youre still undecided, consider the following:

a/ How do you know that the IP addresses Moblock is blocking are really accurate?

b/ Whats from stopping a new IP address being used which isnt on the blocklist.

c/ Who exactly is giving this “blocklist info”?

So lets look at this in more detail:

a/ How do you know that the IP addresses Moblock is blocking are really accurate?

Because the creators and users tell you so. Thats really it. There is no real way for the average user to tell if a blocked IP is blocked because it is legitimately belonging to the RIAA (or similar) or infact its been submitted by a user who wants to block another out of spite.

b/ Whats from stopping a new IP address being used which isnt on the blocklist.

Nothing at all and its really quite simple, if someone is intending to harvest IP’s and collect data on users filesharing then they could easily check to see if they are on the list. If they are its not hard to get around is it?

c/ Who exactly is giving this “blocklist info”?

Who knows? and for what purpose? Users (IMO) are relying on blind faith that the submissions to the blocklist are both honest and accurate

Even if you are sucessful in blocking a company looking to harvesting your IP for file sharing, that only negates for possibility of a file transfer between you and them, they are still privy to the same information on a torrent you are, i.e whos a seeder/peer how fast you are u./l and d/l.

So really what good is Peer Guardian or MoBlock? Ill let you decide.

UK Law & Filesharing

When using a BT tracker (or similar P2P) you become a distributor or sharer which means that whilst you are downloading you are also sharing with others. This leaves you open to legal recourse. For every 1k of data you share it can be argued in court that you are responsible for a loss of revenue. There is provision within criminal law for this behaviour and most noteably your average pirate DVD seller will be affected by this, criminal law will cover the selling and any exploitation issues that are associated. IMO the more important issue for the average user is within civil law.

In the UK, the civil court works under “balance of probabilities” unlike criminal which works under “beyond all reasonable doubt” If you consider how evidence can be harvested, Id say that the “balance of probabilities” would not be as hard to prove as some people will have you believe.

Conversly under UK the act of simply downloading a file for personal viewing (from the newsgroups or IRC for example) has no provision in UK criminal law (providing there is no prohibited material banned already by UK legislation). Of course a company in theory could take you to the small claims court in order to gain from you the lost revenue in you downloading the product, but Id suggest that these cases would be invariably difficult to prove and more importantly not worth the time of the company concerned. That though does not make is acceptable and the person who serves files on IRC or posts copyrighted material to the Newsgroup places themselves in exactly the same position as the filesharer on a BT tracker.

Avoiding the RIAA and copyright issues

Simple answer, dont download/share copyrighted material. If you feel that the prices of goods are too expensive, vote with your feet and dont buy them, but certainly dont download/share them.

This is one of the great things about FOSS. I have no worries about computing costs because I am running FOSS packages completely. Whilst Windows users claim that so many people use Microsoft products, I wonder how many would if they couldnt get them for free (albeit illegally)

The Pirate Bay – FUD?

Ive seen a few sites now reporting (i believe incorrectly) in regards to the Pirate Bay case. Whilst I havent been privy to any of the court documents pertaining to the case, I can draw my own opinion from what Ive read on news sites.

1. The Piratebay were found guilty of a criminal offence and the court awarded costs on the basis of that finding. They were not put in prison by IP holders of material that was available from the metafiles hosted by PB.

2. IMO The Piratebay would have been found guilty by a jury and sentence passed by a judge (if indeed the case was passed to their version of Crown court) or they could have been found guilty by magistrates (if indeed it went to their version of a magistrates court) I fail to see why the judge is being held for a case of appeal, when the guilt will not have been his decision, merely the sentence. Or have I got that wrong? If someone can correct or elaborate on the countries legal system Id love you to post.

3. A court imposed fine, whilst being the subject of much humour within the PB community is actually to be taken very seriously, the court has very powerful means (certainly in the UK) to enforce fines, and even return to prison those who either evade or make a mockery of it.

Whilst many people appear to be taking a “great delight” in the “poke at the system” in regards to filesharing, they seem to like to make points about “real criminals” and “why target filesharers?” as if that somehow justifies their behaviour. Law is not something we can pick and choose the bits we like and abide by them only. For a society to work we either have all laws obeyed or none. Otherwise whats the point? I personally dont agree with UK speed cameras on the roads, but Im not going to break the speedlimit just because I dont agree with them. When the next filesharer says “the police should be looking for real criminals” remind them of that fact.

Of course if the law was changed then it wouldnt be a problem, but since I dont think its likely a law will be passed allowing a filesharing free for all, then you either obey it and call yourself a law abiding citizen or you dont.

Its not just the filesharers that are guilty though!

I think the whole anti-piracy campaign has been badly handled from the beginning. To me it seemed that the anti-piracy ads would claim piracy was funding whatever “hot potato” was being reported in the press. In my opinion they realised this and we saw recently the “Knock off Nigel” ads, which believed a catchy tune and a little comedy would be a good way to put the anti-piracy message across. Obviously it didnt work and instead of people thinking about piracy as an issue, if you look over at Youtube they are actually discussing which “Knock off Nigel” ad they think is better. (IMO)

Of course at the end of the day it comes down to personal choice. I personally dont want to be the rail user who doesnt buy a ticket. So I’ll either buy the products I want or use (IMO) the better FOSS alternatives.

MoBlock/PG – A cause for concern? IMO if you are relying it to evade those who pursue illegal downloaders, then yes. One could argue that a savvy investigation could include a machine on a tracker that is intended to be blocked (and registering the IP of those that refuse connection) this could further add to the evidence against an alleged filesharer in that it further proves intent. (IMO)

After that more lengthy post, lets end on a lighter note, here is my favorite “Knock off Nigel” advert!

In these dreadful days when it seems that the torrent world is set to be caught in a torrent of lega

In these dreadful days when it seems that the torrent world is set to be caught in a torrent of legal action of closures what is a person to do? The Pirates Bay leaders? Convicted! Jailed! They shall stare at the world from behind bars of iron. Already three torrent sights in Malaysia have been forced to closed. It is a black period for torrents.

We all know that black days recover and that torrents aren’t going anywhere, but in this dark times I took the time to research some alternate methods of downloading, and stumbled upon newsgroups. I was warry at first. First of all, you have to pay a monthly fee for newsgroups. What good was that? Also, they seemed needlessly complicated. Get subscribed to a website, use another program to download things, and yet another website to find things? But I decided to bite the bullet and expirement.

For starters I went to Slyck, a really good website that walked me through all the difficulties of newgroups and really helped me understand them.

Slyck refered me to several places to subscribe to. I decided to go with Giganews, all the reviews seemed to say that it was the best way to go. It costs a bit more than other sites, but they are apparently better (offering more rentention and completion statistics) and they offer a 10 gig free trial to get used to the newsgroup world and actually see if it is worth getting into.

The next thing I did was download the actually program to download things. This is similar to the torrent world where you need something like UTorrent or Bittorrent to download things. I went with the suggestion of GrabIt, this time because it was a free program that had good reviews. I am impressed with a few features on it, like it’s ability to pause for a period of time instead of indefinitely like Utorrent does. No more forgetting to turn on the downloads after decided to turn them off and play WoW!

At this point I was all set up, but I wasn’t ready to be converted. Then I turned the downloads on.

2000 kb/s.

That’s all I have to say.

2000 kb/s. Consistently. For everything I have downloaded.

I haven’t given up completely on torrents, and when I turn the torrents on the speed on the newsgroups tends to fall down to about 1500 kbs or so… but I have never downloaded faster in my life. It’s amazing to come home from work and be like, “I think I shall watch Iron Man tonight.” Then download and have time to watch it too! Over all, I rate newsgroups as worth a bit of money.
