Times Mac

Download “Feedreader (Windows): Feedreader

That’s it!

“Australian newsreader Peter Hitchiner has been surprised by a special guest during a bulletin – a giant seagull. The bird stole the show as it walked past the studio’s camera filming the Melbourne skyline. The Channel 9 newsreader was reading a story about a 27-year-old being murdered at the time.

Peter Hitchiner told a Melbourne radio station: “I was reading away…and I suddenly thought ‘Oh gosh that seagull’s back again’, because we had a bit of a problem last night.”

I was chatting to some Spanish mates the other day about my favourite newsreader, a certain Mónica Carrillo, who sends my heart aflutter everytime she says ‘crisis economica’ – but they were fairly dismissive and instead raved about a certain Patricia Conde, who presents a comedy review / current events TV show called Sé lo que hicisteis (trans. ‘I Know What You Were Up To’). Check her out in action below:

Well, I still say Monica is tops. Now don’t get me wrong here: Patricia is clearly a top babe. But here in Spain, while I’m still regularly knocked sideways by these dusky latin beauties, for the locals they’re just ten-a-dozen. Blondes, on the other hand, get special attention and even an average looker will get herds of men tripping over themselves to chat them up. It’s clearly a rarity thing. In the UK we have a shortage of dark latinas and thus I find them exotic. In Madrid, they have a shortage of blondes and thus find them exotic. Well, that’s my theory anyway and I’m sticking to it.

And BTW, Monica, if you’re reading this, pls get in touch. I’m not rich and I’m not handsome but I have all my own teeth and can make a great Cosmopolitan.

Anna Coren, do you feel familiar with that name? Switch your TV to CNN (if you are subscribing to cable TV). If you’re lucky, you’ll get Anna Coren as the newsreader.

Anna Coren began her journalism career at Nine Network Australia.

Anna Coren reading Channel 9’s morning news show in 2002

Then, she moved to Seven Network Australia to host public affairs show, Today Tonight. There are three Today Tonights in Australia; East Coast edition (Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney), Adelaide and Perth. Anna co-hosted the East Coast edition of the show.

Anna was there to replace former co-host Naomi Robson (above). Of course, both of them (Naomi and Anna) were targets of ABC’s Chasers’ War.

The East Coast edition of Today Tonight was broadcasted from Channel 7 studio in Melbourne during Naomi’s era and moved to Sydney when Anna took over. Not all the time, though, she presented the show from Martins Place.

Anna Coren at Channel 7 studio in Mt Cootha, Brisbane. Also on the video, Seven News Brisbane co-hosts, Rod Young and Kay McGrath. Sports reader Pat Welsh and I don’t know who is the guy presenting the weather, where was Talitha Cummins?

Anna didn’t last long. She only stayed at Today Tonight for only one year, compared to Naomi’s ten years in the show.

Matt White, former Seven News Sydney sports reader, replaced Anna.

And now, she is in Hong Kong working for Cable News Network (CNN). Here are some pictures I took only this morning when I saw Anna accidentally on CNN.

There was one occasion though when she came back to Australian screen, it was during a breaking news of Sri Lanka cricket team attack.
How does it do it? It regularly fetches the feeds you gave it, and looks through them for the keywords you gave it. If it finds any, it puts the appropriate tag on the news post. At the end it generates a html page out of all the tagged articles, and you can read them.

I had long harbored a desire to get my computer to compose a news digest for me. I was thinking along the lines of regularly fetching a list of websites for me, and looking for certain keywords. But it always sounded like an awful amount of work to get it to work decently, so I never did it.

And then I discovered the rawdog RSS aggregator. It supports plugins, and according to the website, the plugin “article-filter” could filter articles, and “tagcat” could tag articles. Maybe I could combine them to generate a nice news site for me? Turned out that I could not get the result I wanted to have out of the existing plugins. But in looking over the source code of the plugins I saw that writing a custom one really shouldn’t be all that hard (says me, who has hardly ever programmed python before, and has not become a fan of the language during this project).

So what does the result look like? It looks like this:

HTML site containing news articles (click for full size)

Setting it all up:

Preconditions:
-a debian based OS. As long as you are on a unix-like system where a rawdog port exists, you should be able to adapt the instructions, though.
-a browser with javascript activated

Instructions:
(Note: everything following a ‘$>’ should be entered on the command line)

Become superuser:

$>su

Install rawdog:

$>apt-get install rawdog

Give your normal user account write access to /var/www (which is where we want to generate the news site):
(replace <userName> with the name of your normal user [try 'ls /home' if unsure])

$>chown <userName> /var/www

Release your superuser privileges:

$>exit

Create the rawdog configuration directory:

$>mkdir ~/.rawdog

Download the zip archive rawdog.zip, then extract it into the just created directory:

$>cd ~/.rawdog

$>unzip <pathToRawdogZip>

(Note: the configuration you just installed tells rawdog to overwrite the file /var/www/index.html. If you are already using your computer to serve html from that directory, you may want to change that setting…)

Tell rawdog to use the configuration to generate the html page:

$>rawdog -uwv

The Result

Alright, if you followed the instructions this far, take a deep breath and open the url “file:///var/www/index.html” in the browser of your choice (but remember, you need java script activated).

If everything worked, you will be greeted by a “Loading Rawdog Latest News…” headline, which shortly changes to “Rawdog News Loaded”.
To the left of the headline you can see the time the page was generated (meaning that it should show a time no more than a minute or two in the past).

Below that, you should see a listing of tags, containing “Linux”, “Debian”, “Drivers”, “Graphics”, “KDE” and “aseigo” (You see these tags because I left them in the configuration file to give you a starting point for your own configuration.)

The main field in the lower right should be empty. As soon as you click on one of the tag links, the articles matching the tag appear there.

Everything worked? Cool! (And if not, drop me a note, and we’ll figure out what went wrong.)

Look into ~/.rawdog/config to change tags and feeds. The file is well documented.
Try adding different tags and feed sources, build tag hierarchies using “subtags” lines, and rerun “rawdog -uwv” to recreate the web page.

Improvements you can make if you intend to keep using the news aggregator

How do you get the computer to recreate the web page without having to enter “rawdog -uwv” on the command line?

That’s a job for cron:

$>crontab -e

The editor you just entered is (probably) vi, which makes the following a bit tricky…
->You want to enter the line */30 *  * * *   rawdog -uw
Press the Ins key to switch vi to insert mode (you should see — Insert — on the bottom line).
Go to the end of the first line, press Enter, paste the line in, press Esc.
Finally, type :wq to save the file and exit vi. (crontab prints
crontab: installing new crontab
)
To check, you can type
crontab -e
again. If the line you pasted appears again, you did it right, and can exit with :q
(crontab prints
No modification made
)

Alright, from now on you should get the file var/www/index.html regenerated every thirty minutes.
A short aside: If you are unsure whether cron is executing your commands, try entering
*/1 *  * * *   touch ~/.cron_running
into your crontab, and look at the file modification time of ~/.cron_running (it should change every minute).

Why are all tags marked in green, and all the articles framed in green?

Unless your browser is better than mine (or you now more about how to configure it [In which case: Please tell!]), every time you open the url “file:///var/www/index.html” anew, every tag is marked in green, and all articles are surrounded by a green border. That is supposed to indicate new articles, so why do they all stay green?

The reason is that your browser doesn’t remember that the cookie belongs to your file. It lets the newsreader store a cookie, but not retrieve it. And without a memory, all articles will always be new to the newsreader…
The difference between your file and a normal website is that since you open the file directly, it has no domain associated. But the browser uses the domain to identify the correct cookie.

The only solution I have found for that, is to give the browser a domain, by opening the website using a http server:

Become superuser:

$>su

Install lighttpd, a small, and (relatively) easy to configure http server:

$>apt-get install lighttpd

Open /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf in the editor of your choice
-replace the line
## server.bind = "localhost"
with
server.bind     = "ip6-localhost"

(ensures nobody from outside can connect to the http server)
-remove
#### handle Debian Policy Manual, Section 11.5. urls
and all following lines
(these lines restrict which files the server may access, which is good, but way more work than we want to do…)

restart lighttpd:

$>/etc/init.d/lighttpd restart

(if this fails with

getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known ' ip6-localhost '
,
try replacing
ip6-localhost
with
localhost
in the line you edited in /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf . One or the other should work…)

check that the server is only running locally:

$>netstat tunap | grep lighttpd

This should output a line like
tcp6 0 0 ::1:80 :::* LISTEN 5736/lighttpd
.
If you see “:::80″ instead of “::1:80″, you have not restricted lighttpd to your local computer only, so go fix it!
If you don’t get any output at all, lighttpd is not running.

Open your browser, make sure you allowed cookies for the domain “ip6-localhost”, and access “http://ip6-localhost/“.

It should display the same webpage you got when opening “file:///var/www/index.html”, but it should remember which articles are new, and which were already seen. The green background behind a tag name should vanish when clicking on it (as before), and stay vanished until a newer article is tagged with the tag.
The green borders should vanish the next time the page is regenerated by rawdog (except for articles which are added during that regeneration.)

Well, did it work? Drop a note on how it went

What is still missing?

It’s definitely not perfect yet, but I’m not in the mood right now to fix the remaining shortcomings. I will post if I improve the news aggregator significantly though.

Generating the website can take a bit

If you find yourself adding dozens of different global tag rules, and enough feeds so that rawdog accumulates a few thousend articles, well, just think about how many times rawdog will have to scan the summaries looking for specific keywords (assuming this is what you match against)…
The solution would be to remember which tags matched which article, and on rescan only examine new articles, or all if the configuration changed. Will be implemented if it gets too bad for me…
A few hints to reduce the number of necessary scans:

Try to combine multiple tag rules for the same tag. It’s better to write ‘tag Debian summary “(?i)debian|sidux”‘ than ‘tag Debian summary “(?i)debian” ; Debian summary “(?i)sidux”‘. It’s shorter too

Use the possibility to throw all asigned tags away by ‘-*’ where it makes sense: The plugin is intelligent enough not to check whether they would have matched if they are to be thrown away anyway, so you can safe a lot of checks.

Loading the website takes quite some time

Quick fix: Increasing cache size for your browser should help quite a bit, but not enough.

The problem is that even though the articles are all hidden to start with, your browser still loads all the images linked from the feed articles. With a lot of tags, that number can easily grow into hundreds or thousands.

I see two ways to avoid that: One way would be to set up a proxy like squid, and tell your browser to use it. Squid can be configured so that it does not refetch the images, but serves them from local cache. Squid is by far more flexible than your normal browser cache, which means this can be fine tuned until the solution is good, but that also means that setting this up is work…

The second way would be to set up wget so that it rewrites the links contained in the html page to point to the local disk, and prefetches the images. I prefer this solution, since it could be easily expanded to fetch the linked news articles too. Which means you could read news on your laptop even without having an internet connection…
I actually had that solution kind of working (having a http server installed helps to achieve this). My problem is that for the life of me I can’t figure out how to keep wget from refetching stuff that is already on disk. Not just ask whether there is a newer version on the server, but just plain ignore those files. Sounds simple, but there doesn’t appear to be an option for it (and wget has literally hundreds), and I have yet to figure out a way around that omission. Anyway, since I don’t have the laptop yet, I postponed solving that problem.

If I change the configuration, not all newly matched articles are marked as new

Yes, true. All that the website remembers via cookie is the time of the newest read article for each tag. All newer articles are considered new, all older ones as already known. This breaks down if newly matched articles slide in behind the newest read article.
The problem is that cookie space is limited to 4kb, and if I remember stuff for every single article, the cookie would simply get to big. And everything that uses something other than a cookie as memory immediately becomes way more complicated.

Credits

Most especially: Many many thanks to Adam Sampson for writing rawdog, and giving it such good documentation. All I did was use the plugin structure it provides to make it jump through my hoops. If it were not such a great and flexible (and well documented) program, I would never have gotten the idea to train it to do tricks.

He’s also the one who wrote the filter plugin which I slightly modified (fixed the error messages to actually work, and made the “filter” argument work globally).

Also:

Gutemberg A. Vieira for writing the sidebarfeedwise plugin, which showed me how to get a side bar of links, and make them trigger java script to hide or show the actual articles. This would have not been nearly as easy if I had to figure all that stuff out myself.

Decklin Foster for writing the tagcat plugin. Even if it was not what I was looking for, it gave me the inspiration to implement tagging the articles, without which this project would not have happened.

I’m a bit of a news junkie and I waste far too much time reading RSS news feeds. It doesn’t help when there’s apps like NetNewsWire which make it all so easy. I’ve been using NetNewsWire since I got my Mac and it’s one of those apps I’d install on any new Mac (note to self – no you can’t afford that new 15″ Macbook Pro you’ve been lusting after).

Anyway, for all this time I’ve been happily using NetNewsWire with its clean, uncluttered interface and happily keeping it in sync with my iPhone and with FeedDemon on the one or two Windows machines I find myself obliged to use every so often. And then the holy grail of features comes along in NetNewsWire 3.2beta… synchronization with Google. That’s right, you can now sync NetNewsWire with Google Reader making it even easier to satisfy your news feed habit wherever you are. Unfortunately there’s a catch and that’s adverts – that’s right, in order to support the free version of NetNewsWire, you now have adverts popping up in a little window at the bottom left of your news reader.

I HATE ADVERTS! Every time I tune in to a commercial TV station I seem to get the start of a 5 minute advert break. A 30 minute TV show is actually 10 minutes of adverts, 2 minutes of credits and only 18 minutes of actual TV. And the web is becoming saturated with adverts now, there’s barely a web page you can look at now that doesn’t try and sell you something (including the very page you’re reading if WordPress has anything to do with it).

Now I know you’re going to tell me that the adverts make a lot of this free software viable, and enables a lot of great content to be free and you’re probably right, but it doesn’t stop me from running Firefox extensions like NoScript and AdBlock Plus to try and minimize the amount my eyeballs get fried with animated banners trying to sell me something I don’t want or can’t afford. Ok, enough of me ranting about the commercial world, how did I get rid of the adverts in the latest version of NetNewsWire? Simply by using LittleSnitch to block where NetNewsWire is getting its advert content from.

What you need to do is to deny NetNewsWire access to www.northmay.com, either just on Port 80 or on any port to that site. You may need to go into LittleSnitch and delete the rules for NetNewsWire to then allow LittleSnitch to recreate them by prompting you for what access NetNewsWire is allowed when you next launch it. So far this workaround has worked a treat. The advert box is still there in my reader, but thankfully it doesn’t contain anything distracting that changes every 30 seconds or so.

Look Ma, no adverts!

I was fortunate in that I picked up LittleSnitch as part of a MacUpdate Promo Bundle last December, so I got it for a great price, but it’s well worth the full price as an extra level of security and control for your Mac. If you don’t have LittleSnitch and want an alternative, then I’d highly recommend the free and opensource news reader called Vienna. I’ve been using Vienna for less than twenty four hours, however the look and feel of it is just as good as NetNewsWire, and it’s got the functionality to match – apart from the sync features that the NewsGator products have of course.

When NetNewsWire 4.0 is released in however many weeks time, I guess it’s going to be a choice of a free version with adverts or a paid version without. Whether or not the above trick will still work remains to be seen as I’m sure the NetNewsWire developers are well aware of this sort of workaround already. Will I upgrade to the next free version of NetNewsWire or end up buying an ad-free version? Maybe, maybe not. I have been trying out Vienna and apart from sync’ing it ticks all the boxes for me, and in fact anything that helps ween me off spending hours reading newsfeeds by not offering sync between multiple devices, might actually be a good thing!

The one-time TV sports commentator and father of Channel 9 newsreader Dixie Marshall said his house of 10 years was “on the best block on the canal” because of its dual water views.

“From a canal’s point of view it is on what is called a T-junction. You look right, left and ahead and all you have are water views,” he said.

With an estuary to the west and the canal to the east, every room in the home has a water view.

Two studies, a bedroom and the open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen are on the ground floor.

Tall windows reach to the second storey, allowing breathtaking water views. A wide entertaining area leads to a private jetty.

There are three bedrooms upstairs, including the master with ensuite, walk-in robe and balcony overlooking the canal.

The other bedrooms have built-in robes and a shared main bathroom.

A lounge with a balcony makes it ideal for guests or a teenagers’ retreat.

“I asked the architect to make it feel like you were on a ship and when sitting in the lounge upstairs, it is just like it, with water everywhere,” Mr Marshall said.
The home has airconditioning, an alarm and double lock-up garage.

“One of the best things is the huge reserve next to the house,” Mr Marshall said. “Not only is it great to kick a footy with the grandkids and go for a walk, but it allows for plenty of visitor parking.”

For a long time, NetNewsWire was my RSS reader of choice. Recently I took a look at Times and was really impressed by its interface—lots of innovation. Instead of e-mail as the metaphor for news, Times was more like a newspaper. The look of it was spot on.

It was fun to look at my news feeds in Times, but after a while, I got tired of clicking from tab to tab. Doing this felt a little sluggish…like a wet sponge. Also, if you have more than 4 feeds on a page, it’s somewhat tedious to scroll each section up and down.

I didn’t really want to go back to NetNewsWire—for some reason, reading news this way made me feel a little anxious. It was like I had to read every article. I was about to punt until I remembered that the browser I was using for organizing my social media accounts could also manage news feeds. That browser was Flock.

Flock is Awesome

If you haven’t used Flock, you should really take a look. It’s rare to see an app that integrates so many things feel and still feel well-architected. Let me just show you how Flock’s feed reading interface compares to NetNewsWire and Times:

Flock isn’t prettier than Times, and it’s not more powerful than NetNewsWire, but it presents information in a way that I find easy to consume. Its ability to integrate newsfeeds with social media feeds in one overview is extremely helpful. Whenever I take a break from work and want to see what’s going on, I just bring up the “My World” page and am instantly up to date. It lets me see what’s happening right now alongside what people are saying right now.

Give Flock a try. If you haven’t seen it before, it will change the way you think of browsers.

browser.contentHandlers.types.0.title = NewsAlloy
browser.contentHandlers.types.0.type = application/vnd.mozilla.maybe.feed
browser.contentHandlers.types.0.uri = http://www.newsalloy.com/?act=default&rss=%s

Aaah, reading the news. Some people wait years to get to do it. Some people have to fight, and beg,

Aaah, reading the news. Some people wait years to get to do it. Some people have to fight, and beg, and slog it out to get a chance.

And if you work in radio – particularly local radio – you could find yourself behind the mic weeks out of college.

Many big media groups offer on the job training and voice coaching. But what else must the newsreader know?

Image: Adam Westbrook

Here are 9 questions for a newsreader to ask themselves after every bulletin:

01. it legally sound and accurate?

Possibly the most important one. Have you remembered your ‘allegedlys’ your ‘he denies the charges’ and your Section 39?

02. Did you treat stories in a responsible way?

Sometimes it’s easy to exaggerate the stories, especially if you’re trying to make it a lead, or even in the pursuit of creativity.

03. Were they appropriate for a family audience?

Dogs die in hot cars, and kids cry in hot cars when the radio’s talking about graphic violence and sex.

04. Would the listener trust you? Have you left any questions unanswered?

It’s vital you are straight with your listener. Keep your scripts simple, and for the love of God, don’t include phrases, terms or explanations when even you don’t know what they mean. This is even more important during the recession. When you tell your audience a local company has gone into receivership, what does that mean? Getting it wrong, or skimming over it doesn’t help anyone understand these difficult times.

05. Have you been creative, but not confusing?

Being creative with your audio and your writing is what makes you stand out in a competitive market. That’s split clips (sometimes called turbos), creative voxes, asking questions, even being poetic. But don’t confuse your listener or distort the story in the pursuit of creativity.

06. Did you involve the listener?

Radio was creating virtual communties long before social networking. How can you involve your listener? Can they text or email their thoughts? Do you have an answerphone line they can call? A montage of listener calls on the hot topic of the day is always a winner.

07. Did you help increase web traffic?

Use every opportunity to throw listeners to your website. But be wary of reading out a web address after every story. The website is very useful if there’s an important story, like the Middle East, which is just too dry. Give it two lines, and then tell your listener to go online if they want more.

08. Did you speak directly to your listener?

That means phrases like “as we told you earlier” “you might remember we told you about” “you’ve been getting in touch with us about…”. The old adage of radio remains: you’re talking to a single listener not a million. It is a personal medium. Talk to them, not at them.

09. Did the stories you chose reflect what your listeners are talking about?

It’s difficult to know what the talking point is when you’re stuck on a newdesk. Use your reporters. Watch the news channels. But don’t be pressured into a lead, just because your rivals are.

Taken from a selection of questions Bauer Radio journalists are often asked to ask themselves.

C, my media savvy better half (she used to work at Granada) also explained that, apparently, when choosing people to read the news, the producers try and select a man who resembles a stereotypical father figure and a “lady” who is the perfect mistress! Well, that puts a whole new perspective on the Bill Turnbull and Sian Williams thing on BBC Breakfast.

Ever since I caught wind of RSS newsreaders I always was fascinated by them. Without having to go to each individual website I could see all the articles from every type of news site in one place.

But is there such a thing as too much? I have 24 feeds; 9 Apple-related, 11 tech-related, 3 World News and 2 Humor sites. I’ll admit that I don’t look at the world news ones as much as I should but those for some reason I now go to their actual sites because I believe they deserve more of my time than simply reading a one-line excerpt (although the BBC is VERY good at putting excerpts in their RSS feeds).

But to be honest I do LOOK at every feed just to see if there’s something that interests me…I just don’t look at every story (aka click on it). I just headline-surf and see if I like then click it. Is that a bad thing necessarily? I really don’t know if it’s just some infernal obsession I have created or what not, but idk.

(If you’re wondering I’m using NetNewsWire 3 btw).

So what are your thoughts about RSS feeds? Do you use them often? Not at all? If you use them, how many do you have in your newsreader?
