Life is so strange, you see those old and middle aged people talking about the old days then today I was up at the farm chatting to my old mate Dave. Dave has been my fitter for many years looking after all my cars and vans. So there we are chatting away about the good old days and things that happened 25 to 30 years ago and it suddenly hit me “I am now one of those people” coming up to 50 I am now classed as old! where has all that time gone we asked one another, surviving was my answer….for some of us that is all we can do survive, when its good it’s good and makes up for the norm. Will I make the next 50 , I very much doubt it, not even sure I want too, but the next 30 well that will no doubt be a challenge too! Sounds Utterly Ridiculous to me, probably end up needing Therapy, with an Eternal Wish , to see Kez happy.Here to Life

What is the one thing essential to the survival of our civilization? What one thing if left uncared for and ignored will result in a complete and utter destruction of everything we have worked to accomplish? The answer is CHILDREN. If a society does not care for and raise up children with values and integrity then the future of the society itself is in danger. So is the case of the church. The church today in most places is exceedingly aging. And while our adults and senior adults are valuable and still have a lot to give we must look toward the future and remember that when we are gone someone has to continue the work. Accept this is no ordinary work this is the honoring of our God and the salvation of souls. If you look around the congregation at Reedy Fork on a Sunday morning you will notice that there is a terrible lack of children and young families in our ranks. And contrary to belief it is not because they are hidden away in children’s church or nursery or somewhere else. It is because they are not here at all. It is an epidemic that is slowly chiseling away at the fabric of our future.

So what is the solution? First, leadership must ask themselves “WHY”. Several weeks ago I sensed that things were declining in youth group on Wednesday nights and I had to take a tough look at what I was doing. I had to be critical of myself and it hurt. I had to make changes to things that I had all planned out and was quite satisfied with but I knew it had to change. We too need to take that same look churchwide whether it be in youth or children’s ministry or in our worship service or any other ministry we must ask the tough questions. Second we need to encourage our families to be here. Note the wording there is encourage and not scold. Fussing and fuming and condemnation will not bring people back into our fold only love, care and concern will. Thirdly if you are a young family reading this YOU need to be here. There is nothing more important than your commitment to God and His church and allowing yourself to drift into the apathy of casual church attendance will do nothing but harm to your relationship with God. I understand that the world is enticing you with all the wonders of what it has to offer but there comes a time when you have to make the decision that God is most important above all and that time is now.

Okay, so…I lied. I wasn’t strong enough to pull an all-nighter last night. I know, I know. So sue me.

When it came down to making the final decision, I sat back and really, truly considered sitting and writing straight through until dawn. But I began to realize that my task was more daunting than I had originally anticipated, as my characters have started swinging way out of my control, getting more and more independent by the second.

It’s overwhelming, really, but I refuse to stop. I am so close to 50,000 I can literally taste it. And once I hit that big 50K, there is an offer that I just can not refuse.

When I say free published copy, I mean full-on paperback book containing the same words that we creative people have strived to get written in this past month. Can I even BEGIN to tell you how exciting that is?? Probably not. It’s fantastic, it’s fierce, it’s the most amazing offer I’ve ever seen given for free.

And I will take advantage of it. I have until June 2010 to finish The Syndicate (as its temporary title is at the moment) and edit the living shit out of it. Is it achievable? Yes. Can I do it? Probably. Will I still have my sanity at the end of it all?

Well, I might be able to salvage a fraction of it. <– A fraction which I am sure to lose come next November when I tackle this endeavor all over again.

I promise you this time: the next blog will be the great announcement of victory.

There are many shops that I dislike going to but yesterday I think I went to the worst shop in the world. There are many reasons why I believe this to be so and will share them with you below but first I am sure you are desperate to know which shop I am referring to. So here goes – the worst shop in the world is officially Next at Forster Square Retail Park in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Why is this? Blimey, where do I start?

It is never going to be a walk in the park shopping for baby clothes while pushing twins around in a double pram but it shouldn’t become a thoroughly unpleasant experience. I have to admit my mood wasn’t lifted by the parking situation at Forster Square either, everyone was driving round trying to find people leaving so that you could park in the spot they had just left. I was sat there with my indicators on waiting for a particular car to reverse out, as soon as they did someone else zoomed along and wedged themselves in that spot! Repeatedly beeping my horn and shouting “f**king w*nker” out of the open car window didn’t seem to prick their conscience either. Once I had calmed down and found another parking spot it was time for Next.

Firstly it was packed with people dawdling round looking at nothing in particular, I know this isn’t the fault of the shop but it is bloody irritating. Through the doors and into the children’s department where they have jammed so many clothes rails into a small space that there is no room to push a pram (even a single pram), there is even nowhere to park up and try and get out of other people’s way. This is a children’s wear department! Do they not expect people to have prams?

Because the clothes rails are so tightly packed everyone knocks clothes off the rails and so the floor is littered with cardigans, hats, clothes hangers etc. So even if there was a bit more room for a pram you would be constantly running over fallen clothing. This problem has a knock on effect – three quarters of the staff are slowly wandering round picking items up, checking that they don’t have footprints on and finding which rail they came from.

The knock on effect of this problem? There is only one person serving on the four tills and so the queue is huge, not that there is room to queue anywhere because the clothes rails are too tightly packed. So after waiting in line for twenty minutes with two increasingly grumpy babies to buy two winter coats which aren’t ideal but are the only items in the whole shop of which they have more than one,  I get near the till. I overhear the very flustered person on the till saying to the customer in front of me “Well I am the manager and even I am serving on the tills, if people can’t wait then they will just have to shop elsewhere”. This is the manager!!! If that is the attitude and customer service you get from someone who has progressed through the ranks what on earth will the attitude of the other staff be like? Maybe if she managed her staff and told them to get a sense of urgency instead of slowly wandering round in a daze replacing one item at a time more of them could come to the tills to get rid of the queue of disgruntled people wanting to give them their hard earned cash?

Grrrrrr!!!!

#158 – Next – “Too Close” – (1997)

Rated Next is the name of the album here… and I don’t think it qualifies as clever. Don’t ask me what the hell the first 30 seconds of the music video is: I have no idea (and one of the guys looks like Wayne Brady). This song was (and still is) incredibly slick. I don’t know why, but this song reminds me of “No Matter What” by the surprisingly Irish, Boyzone.

A inuaguração de uma exposição de arte contemporânea angolana numa galeria do Pelourinho + conferência com o sociólogo angonalo José Octávio Van-Dúnem + concerto da banda NEXT + início da gravação do primeiro CD da banda.

Estive lá fotografando, blogueando e escrevendo um dossiê sobre o assunto, que vai virar uma revista-portfolio.

Pra quem quiser ver um pouco de Luanda contemporânea, vale dar uma espiada no blog. Já aviso que vcs não vão encontrar tambores, negros com os corpos pintados, leões, refugiados famintos e rituais tribais. Sou a maior fã deste projeto todo, que sempre surpreende as pessoas porque mostra arte contemporânea de excelente qualidade, som urbano, pensamentos de vanguarda e outras coisas que muita gente pensa que não existe lá do outro lado do Atlântico.

Também vale espiar o blog da exposição que a Fundação Sindika Dokolo fez em Bordeaux.

No, no, not the literal jobs like the up-to-17% unemployment rate. I mean the Savior-of-Apple Jobs, el Steve-O, The Turtlenecked One, Mr. One-More-Thing. What would our world be like if (gasp) he had never gone back to Apple at all?

Mike Arrington posits that very question today, and while he mostly comes up with “no iPhone, and no Android,” I think the answer is actually more profound than that.  Jobs is responsible for HP’s “The Computer is Personal Again” campaign, for taking mp3 players from the realm of “cute little gadgets that techies and some runners used” to ubiquitous device that no self-respecting person between ages 12 and 40 would be without.

Mostly, Jobs is responsible for returning Apple to mass-market products still driven by exceedingly high quality standards.  He riskily bucked the uber-customization trend: he had better taste than you, and there wre limited options (candy-colored iMacs notwithstanding).  He was a dictator, yes, but a benevolent one.

Jobs’ hyper-controlled and often-criticized ad campaigns transformed marketing strategies not only for the computer and technology industries but across advertising clients.  Everything he touched seemed to turn into a cultural touchstone, without most of the population knowing exactly why they knew what an iMac or an iPod was (remember how revolutionary the original candy bubbles and white bricks were?).

I am, admittedly, an Apple fangirl, but I’m not blind to the many many shortcomings the company has had in product development and brand management over the years.  And Jobs is hardly the Golden Messiah he is frequently (even in this post) trumped up to be – how much more profitable could iMacs have been if Jobs had never insisted on the hockeypuck mouse?

But missteps and egotrips aside, it’s hard to argue that the man has a certain Midas touch.  More importantly, he proved that consumer-driven can also be performance-driven, and beauty-driven, and simplicity-driven, and – the king of them all – highly lucrative.

Video Coming Sooner Than You Think And We Cant Wait!

Now I adore shoes, I wouldn’t quite say they’re my raison d’etre but very close. It all stems from my mum who has probably a good 80-100 pairs of shoes, all kept in their boxes with descriptions on the front so she can see quite easily what & where they are. In direct contract to mine which are shoved in wardrobes, under the bed, under the wardrobe, behind the sofas, in a shoe hangy-uppy thing from Ikea, thrown around the bedroom/kitchen/lounge etc. I have a lot of shoes too. Probably getting on for 50-60 pairs. No Imelda Marcos but still a fair few.

I started buying shoes when I first put on weight. I couldn’t wear the clothes I wanted so I reflected my tastes and personality through my shoes. I wear very sensible, flat, black, boring shoes for work but at weekends and when I go out I love bright colours, wedges, heels, anything that stands out a little bit. My current favourites are silver snakeskin wedge sandals with black straps from Next for night and flat green sling backs with a wooden red ladybird on the front from Office about 7 years ago.

I buy shoes I know I’m not going to wear just because I love them (I’ve stopped doing this though now due to leack of funds). I have a sparkly pair of bright pink stilettos with purple piping that I fell in love with in the Schuh sale and had to have even though I knew I wouldn’t wear them. A pair of green knee high boots that look like Peter Pan boots from New Look. And these. My beautiful red, spotty, Irregular Choice heels with a toadstool on the front (main pic). I wore these to the pub once, crippled myself and now just wear them in the house and look in the mirror at how exquisite they are. I hate my feet but feel it necessary to adorn them in beautiful creations (preferably that show off my tattoos) for my viewing pleasure. I love to wear my Dorothy shoes (bright red glitter, pointed toe) from a cheap shop in Bolton, my ’special needs’ shoes as my sister called them, (flat white Mary Janes with pink pelicans all over them) from Office, my 70’s shoes (7 inch wedges, the front wedge alone is 2 inches! in brown suede with a bow) from Moda in Pelle. Any colour, any kind, any shop, any price. I love them all.

If money was no object I still don’t think I’d buy designer shoes. Occasionally I’ll lust after a pair of Jimmy Choos or Ginas that I see on celebs. I have fallen for the YSL Tribute pumps (thanks to Grazia for introducing me to these completely out of reach lovelies) but the shoes that get me going every time are Kurt Geigers. We have a KG shop 5 minutes from work which is just mean. I go and drool over shoes I can’t afford but that make me want to cry they’re that beautiful.

I don’t mean to wear strange coloured or designed shoes, I’m not projecting my ‘wacky’ personality, I just like bright colours and interesting shoes that few others do. My sister was moaning in Australia that she didn’t have shoes to match a new outfit my parents had just bought. I offered to GIVE her my much adored brown, studded gladiators from Next and she said no! She hates my shoes, favouring classic black sandals, Billabong flip flops (which I am admittedly converted too) and the ubiquitous crocs for work.

I’m struggling to find one pair of shoes that fits my personality. I have a number of guises for which different shoes are needed, mummy (black studded ballerinas), employee (boring black patent Mary Janes from M&S), student (my beloved cherry print Birkenstocks), wife (sensible  grey heels from M&S), friend (knee high black boots), piss head (any high wedges that are totally impractical but look fabulous!). Many Next shoes (my current favourite supplier) reflect my personality, especially these but if I had to choose 1 pair I’d go for these classic Kurt Geigers that I be thrilled to own.  They’re lovely, deceptively comfortable, slightly offbeat, stable and surprisingly cheap. Rather like me.

I can barely say, what has gone through my heart and mind today.  It feels like an entire week and yet only a day.  I went looking around at different things about people who are contacted by ET’s.  I sent my last video to someone, that I never wanted to lose, but never really gained to begin with.

And I tried very hard to stay up.  But when someone pushes you out, then, time to flee.

What’s odd, is, I now feel lighter.  Like a huge burden has just been lifted from me.  Just weighted me down.

I had seen a vision of letting two people go.  I imagined that I let these two birds go.  Except one just flew in circles and the other was so weighted that it couldn’t fly.

Little did I realize till just now actually, that those birds were me.  I literally did not know what to do.  But now that I made my choice for the last time, I understand what the birds were saying to me.  How I spent 1 and a half years going in circles with these people and in the end, I was just completely weighted down.  Couldn’t fly.

I’m a balloon now.

In the world of storytelling in which we work, we often find ourselves sharing stories of need punctuated by endorsements of thanks: An organization which offers a much needed service of support, shaping lives for the better, which then in turn asks for a community’s support so that they may continue to thrive.

The video below was created to highlight a few of the individual success stories of participants in this summer’s Next Generation Zone program. Each year, over 2000 young adults in need of employment assistance find help at Spokane’s Next Generation Zone, which works in partnership with the Spokane Area Workforce Development Council. The successful Summer Youth Employment Program depicted here was made possible by a one-time grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

It is a humbling story that we tell again and again, of folks who have found their vocation in creating opportunities or offering support to those who are struggling. As we approach the holidays, we all have the chance to reflect on what we are thankful for, and to explore our own struggles and generosity.

Kindness and gratitude, when they go hand-in-hand, can be such a divine experience. It is the spark of light in what could be a dark time, when someone is there to say “I want to help.” And the circle is made complete when we give thanks. We each find ourselves in the position of needing and giving at various times in our lives, and it is that lovely dance that connects us all. For that, I simply say thank you.

…lata days

Well, we’ve reached double figures!

I am still feeling a bit “car sick” every day. It last all day and fades in the evening time. I think it might be slightly less than a week ago, so hopefully it’s starting to go away as all the books promise. My boobs are now very tender for the first time this pregnancy too.

Went out shopping for maternity jeans today – my belly is pretty big already and although I can still squeeze into my jeans I don’t really like to in case I’m putting pressure on my tum. I tried on three pairs in Next and then swapped the ones I wanted for a size smaller as they felt a bit loose. When I got them home, I realised I’d picked up a different style…. grrrrrrr…. these ones make me feel like Kris Kross cos they fall down when I walk!! So, back to square one on that front.

Aside from the pregnancy, we’ve had news on T’s job. He works as a courier driver for a fairly small local company. The run he currently does, a cheque clearance one for a big bank, is going as his company have lost the contract. He’s been lucky as they want to keep him on and he has been spared redundancy for the second time. But his new run involves working 3pm until midnight every day – which means we won’t be seeing much of each other during the week, and we’re having to totally rethink all our childcare arrangements. Currently, Tony goes to work at 5.30am (which admittedly wasn’t great either!), I get Lilly up and drop her off at nursery on my way to work. Tony finishes work at lunchtime and has a couple of hours to himself before picking her up at about 3pm. As of next week, he’ll be dropping her off at nursery late morning, I’ll be finishing work early everyday to pick her up from nursery around 5pm and doing the bedtime routine by myself.

Neither of us are looking forward to this, and I think it’s going to be pretty lonely in the evenings once Lilly’s gone to bed, but at least he still has a job. Which is something we can only be greatful for in the current climate. And we’re taking heart in the fact that it won’t be forever – all being well I’ll be on maternity leave in six months time, so even if he hasn’t found anything else by then, at least we’ll have all day together with our babies.

Now we’re looking forward to the 12 week scan – only a week and a half to go – although I feel so nervous about it, I think i’ll be a wreck! I just want to know everything’s all right.

Oh, and I had my first slightly sleepless night last night thinking about the birth. I’d been having a conversation with T’s mum yesterday about Lilly’s birth and how unhappy I was with the way the consultant handled things. When I woke up last night about 3am to go to the toilet, my mind started racing about what would happen this time and I couldn’t get back to sleep for about an hour. I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come…
