As promised in last week’s post, we’ve got some great ideas for New Year’s Eve this week: a family New Year’s Eve in Niagara Falls, elegant dining north of Toronto and in our nation’s capital and an Algonquin Park wilderness adventure complete with a log cabin lodge stay.

The Americana Conference Resort & Spa in Niagara Falls has “Family Spectacular” – non-stop New Year’s Eve fun for the whole family. It’s a big hit every year with an all-you-can-eat buffet and lots of entertainment like The Smudge Fundaes and the Zero Gravity Circus. More info here.

Water bucket and wave pool at the Americana in Niagara Falls

The Americana also has one- and two-night packages with the new Rink at the Brink. The one-night package includes tickets to the Rink at the Brink which is right by the falls, passes to Americana’s Waves Indoor Waterpark as well as your accommodation. Two night packages are the same except they’ve added a $50 meal voucher for the in-house restaurant and Waves snack bar.

Check out Tourism Niagara for more news on Rink at the Brink and other things to do in the Niagara region.

Holiday decorations at the Millcroft Inn and Spa

In the Caledon Hills, 45 minutes northwest of Toronto, the Millcroft Inn and Spa will ring in the new year with its “New Year’s Eve Gala Getaway”. You get two nights at the inn, a welcome reception on December 30th and then a three-course dinner from their a la carte menu. On December 31st there’s a Country Continental Breakfast Buffet, an Al fresco Lunch (on the Pinnacle or wedding garden, weather permitting). The New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner has live entertainment with the Brenda Lewis Jazz Band, festive party favours and a champagne toast at midnight. January 1st starts with a light breakfast buffet. But if you sleep in, you can catch the New Year’s Day Brunch a little later.

Gratuities on food and beverages are included. This package starts at $299 CAD per person, per night (plus taxes, based on double occupancy and a two night stay, subject to availability). Valid December 30-31, 2009.

To get in touch with the Millcroft, call them at 1-800-383-3976 or check them out on the web. Also see the post we did on them last August and some comments about their food from last week.

Brookstreet’s four-diamond Perspectives Restaurant

The elegant Brookstreet Hotel might be the way to go in Ottawa. It has a seven course New Year’s Eve dinner planned. The food at Brookstreet is exceptional (CAA four-diamond rating for both hotel and restaurant) and the place has a real contemporary feel. You can get late night seating times for dinner priced at $149.95 per person and, if you decide t0 make a night of it, they’ll throw in a room for $99/double occupancy. Taxes and gratuities are extra. Personally, I have my eye on the 850 square foot Master Suite with Jacuzzi and balcony, but I haven’t called for a price on that yet. There are a lot of package options at this time of year, so check out the website for details and pricing.

The Algonquin Log Cabin

This next New Year’s Eve idea combines a log cabin stay in the Canadian wilderness with traditional Canadian winter activities. The place is Algonquin Log Cabin near Algonquin Park. Nothing beats a jump in the snow fresh out of this lodge’s wood-fired sauna! But hey, that’s just my opinion. If you want black dresses and high-heels on New Year’s Eve, you may prefer the Brookstreet or the Millcroft.

“Snowshoeing, Torch Lit Skating and Backcountry Skiing” are planned from December 31, 2009 to January 2, 2010 at Algonquin Log Cabin. This spectacular split log lodge with its huge fieldstone fireplace is on a lake bordering Algonquin. In winter, the park is a land of frozen lakes, waist-deep snow, and lots of crisp clear air.

Accommodation at the lodge is double occupancy with shared indoor washrooms, as well as a sauna and shower cabin. Group size is limited to 12 guests and two guides who prepare all the meals. After an invigorating day on the trail, it’s the perfect place to hang out. This New Year’s Eve getaway is priced at $475 per person. Add-on activities include ice fishing and dogsledding. Return transportation from Toronto is available for $175 per person. See the website for further details.

By MEL NEWELL, Gulf Coast Kayaks, PineIsland-Eagle, com, link to original post

So you’re at a picnic and you hear the word kayak. You go over to the small crowd and join in on the conversation and you find out you had no idea about how many kinds of kayaks and kayakers there are. Not wanting to be a bonehead and not knowing what you are talking about, the next time you are in front of a dictionary or a computer with Google, look it up. The first thing you will find out is that it’s not spelled like it sounds ki–ack? Try kayak.

The dictionary says it’s a small human- powered boat. It typically has a covered deck, also, and a cockpit covered by a spray deck also known as a skirt.

Native Ainu, Aleut, and Eskimo hunters in sub-Arctic regions of northern Asia, North America and Greenland use the kayak. It historically was, and is often still, propelled by a double bladed paddle in the hands of a sitting paddler. Modern kayaks come in a wide variety of designs and materials for specialized purposes. Kayaks are, in some parts of the world like the United Kingdom, are referred to as canoes and vice versa.

We first look at the far-end river running and waterfall dropping. Yes, I said waterfall dropping. (Just the sound of it scares the heck out of me.)

Jesse Sharp — ever hear of him? In 1990 at Niagara Falls [Horseshoe Falls], a 28-year-old bachelor from Tennessee attempted to ride over the edge of the falls in a kayak, and paddle four miles down stream. It would have been one heck of a stunt to add to the many others he had done before, as he was an up-and-coming stunt man. Sharp’s kayak paddle is in a museum in Niagara; sorry to say Sharp has never been found to this day.

Palouse Falls is a Washington state park. Tyler Bradt is a record holder for waterfall descent. Palouse falls 186 feet from the top pool to the main drop to the plunge pool, and he now has the world insane record, shattering all other records for this kind of drop.

Whitewater kayaks are rotomoulded plastic, usually polyethylene. This is one tough yak, as it can withstand repeated bouncing off rocks and scraping on the bottom.

Kayakers doing this kind of kayaking use a boat called a “rodeo” boat to ride down swift currents and rapids. The other boat is a Creek boat, very stable used in downstream races. Then one more for fast down river running and flipping over is the Squirt boat filled with foam and custom fitted to the paddlers so he or she can ride in the boat completely submerged.

Racing is your thing? Then you could get a flat water-racing kayak. They come in single, two paddler and four paddlers models; you may have seen them in the Olympic races on TV. They are made of fiberglass, carbon fiber, and Kevlar and run for a modest $4,000 each.

Another racing boat is the surf ski — open cockpit and about 21 feet long, but only 18 inches wide. [Not made for us big guys].

Let’s get back on the river … a new boat that is getting a lot of attention is the “ducky.” It is an inflatable kayak pointed on each end and is a very slow mover but also a lot of fun.

Still talking about inflatable, there is the multi-hull kind with outriggers. They come so you can inflate it with two large tubes, one on each side, with a seat or webbing between. They are great for river fishing and sailing.

How about a folding kayak? This is one amazing little boat. They come from ancient boats made of animal skins stretched over frames made of wood and bones. Combine modern technology with ancient design and you have a boat that can be packed in two small packages — small enough for the trunk of a compact car. The military forces of many nations use them for their strength and portability.

New on the scene are motor powered kayaks with small electric motors, and foot paddle models also; they are good for when you are trying to get close in the mangroves fishing. You can keep your hands free to do casting as you work your way up along side the mangroves with foot pedals or an electric motor.

Now for the kind you see right here in Matlacha. Sea kayaks are the long thin ones with rudders or without. They are for going long distance; they have a small cockpit, foot pegs and usually a few hatches for gear.

Next you have the smaller recreational kayaks around 9 to 12 long and are great for the back bay.

Let’s not forget the SOT or sit on top. This is a very good kayak for fishing — one in every three kayaks sold is a SOT, which is basically a paddle board equipped with a seat.

A few weeks ago I was on the beach at the Jersey shore riding the waves in my sit on top when I saw a new kind of kayaking, well maybe not new, but not something you see every day here in Matlacha. It was a stand on kayak, like a surfboard and a long single blade paddle. The guy who was on it was just learning how to catch the waves. It looked like a lot of work, but he was having a good time. After a few days time I saw him again and he had it down. He started out off the beach waist high, then hoped on and started to paddle over the waves standing up. Once out there, he looked over his shoulder like a surfer to catch the next wave. That day the surf was good and we had some good rollers. He was having a good time, and that is what kayaking is all about.

Is this kayaking or surfing? Who cares what you call it, board and paddle? Surf yakking. I know if I was younger and thought I could get up on the board? Yep, I might be crazy enough to try it.

Well I know we will be getting some e–mails saying, “But what about this or that kind of kayaking, single, or double up stream, or down stream?” Folks, it’s all good.

And remember, it’s always a great day in Mat-La-Sha.
(Editor’s note: Matlacha, pronounced Mat-La-Sha, is a small fishing village/artist colonly on an island in the Gulf of Mexico coast of Florida, north of Fort Myers.)

Smile……..

It is wonderful to see, and of course to shop for the small or big budget items you have liked to get for your special Christmas tree for your home: Santa’s in all kinds of styles, Angels, Birds, Mice, Christmas Balls, Bells, Stars, and Trees. Red or Yellow Dogwood Branches for your fresh ornaments you have welcoming your Guest and Friends by the Front Door.

So many choices…and the nice time you have just looking at it and having fun sharing it together.

Well, we’ve experimented with our stores hours for the two months since we’ve been open.

We had been open only five days a week and had closed on Sundays the past month and a half. Part of the reason was that there are so few places open in our area on Sundays. The Library, both nearby pharmacies, the Chinese restaurant and the neighbouring barber shop among other are closed on that date.

We kept our official hours as ‘closed’ on Sundays but decided to do a test run just in case.

Lucky we did! For some people, Sunday is their only day off in the week or the only time they are free from other obligations. While we still are going to close at 4:30 (though last minute stragglers are always welcome!) we may experiment with evening hours in the future.

So for now, we are now open each and every Sunday, 1 to 4pm.

And the added Sunday bonus? Free parking!!!

Invited by an awesome photographer who I’ve known for years (see B.F.D studio or I’ll beat you), the bff & I attended the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center open house/”Holiday Extravaganza” last night. It was so fucking cool, I have to blog about it. I so do wish I’d brought my camera, though.

Starting with the NACC itself – The community center is located in the old Niagara Falls high school, which closed in 2000. The building was saved from demolition for its historic qualities (having been built in 1924), & now serves home to over 70 artists. I don’t think any better building could have been used to this community, especially since it already has auditoriums, stages, & whatnot.
The place was booming last night – each room provided a different artistic medium (from music to paintings to jewelry to dance), and visitors from every social class & age wandered the halls with excitement. Food & drinks were served (mostly free of charge) from not only the NACC but also from individual artists. Wonderful, friendly hosts abound.
It really kind of reminded me of a squat my ex used to live in a few years back, except a much cleaner environment lol – If I could live at the NACC, I probably would x)

As for Brook’s studio – She said it was her old science classroom lmao. She divided the room in half – one half being the studio (backdrop/s, lighting, costumes & props galore), the other half for hanging out. It’s beautifully cluttered with decor & photos & gifts. Brook’s a very talented young lady, & it shines through every crevice of her studio.
Here’s one of my favorite pictures that she’d been commissioned for – If you’re in Western New York & need a photographer, I’d highly recommend her. She prides herself on being a personal photographer, & she’s quite flexible to work with.

Only some natural wonders stir the passion as does the famous Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls – o

Only some natural wonders stir the passion as does the famous Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls – one of the must see tourist attractions in the globe presents an awesome & breathtaking views to every visitor. There is no single falls called ‘Niagara Falls’. It’s actually the name of the collection of falls – these being Horseshoe Falls & America Falls. The Niagara falls, which include the boundary of Canada & the USA, include three separate sections: The American Falls between Prospects Point & Luna Islands; the Bridal Veil Waterfalls between Luna Islands & Goat Islands & the Canadian Horse shoe Falls between Goat Islands & Table Rocks.

The greatness of the falls, second in volume only to Victoria Falls in South Africa, has long been a motivation to world artists, writers, travelers, entrepreneurs, film producers, & conservationists as well as a broad range of daredevils, acrobats, & assorted advertising seekers. Carved more than 11,000 years ago by the Wisconsin Glaciers, Niagara Falls has roared through the ages power-driven by waters from the Huge Lakes channeled through the powerful Niagara River to a stunning destination. Niagara is one of the mainly commercially utilized falls in the globe. The facilities offered to the travelers make this place a heaven of enjoyment seekers. Fireworks scheduled all through the summer season add to the stunning effect. It’s no wonder that this waterfall remains as one of the most excellent money spinners to the tourism branches of both US & Canada. Niagara Falls is a bit of a tourist Mecca. On your travels you will shortly realize – you are in the pits of the tourism whirlpool.

The Niagara Waterfalls on the River Niagara is in reality a cluster of four falls coming between two nations, Canada & the US. It is just 18 miles southeast from Buffalo New York & 80 miles from Toronto Canada. The waterfalls in the Canadian section -known as the Horseshoe Falls; is the largest of the four. The United States side has two falls The American falls & the Bridal Weil Falls. Niagara Waterfalls that discharges three million cubic liters of water every sixty seconds is the largest in the Northern American continent. In winter, water flows constantly, though mist & water creates ice structures along the banks of the falls. This ice bridge sometimes extends for several miles.

Niagara Waterfalls has something for everyone to see & enjoy. Niagara Waterfalls holds mystery & intrigue for people around the globe. For travelers Niagara sites have got an atmosphere of saga; wind that Cave of the Wind, the thundering waters, & its high speed breeze, invigorating the sagging soul & spirit! , the neighboring are is too much entertaining with lots of activities to do. Historic combat zone dating back to the War of 1813 offer an afternoon of exploration & education. Museums, forts, & taverns provide a glance into a life that was completely different from what we know & expect.

Topics: legends, Native Americans, sacred places, Wampanoag, Seneca, Niagara Falls, Navajo, Cherokee, Papago, Hopewell, Cheyenne, Hopi, Abenaki, Walapai, Grand Canyon

Units of Study: Content-Area, Nonfiction, Talking and Writing About Texts

Tribes: mutual respect

Reading Skills: envisionment, interpretation

My Thoughts: This is a great read aloud for integrating map skills. Using the clues in each legend, students could try and figure out which place is being described. A copy of the map in the back of the book could be distributed to students during the read aloud and partners could work together to locate each sacred place on the map.

It’s on Stoney Lake in the Kawarthas, 90 minutes northeast of Toronto. Each of Pine Vista’s cottages and townhouses come with a fully equipped kitchen so you can cook your own Christmas turkey. They also have jacuzzi tubs, TVs, DVD players, woodburning fireplaces and decks with BBQs. There will be horse-drawn sleigh rides too, along with skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and tobogganing. An indoor hot tub and games room are available and if a spa treatment sounds good, the resort can arrange that too.
We visited The Briars earlier this year and blogged about its fascinating new history room. The resort is in Jackson’s Point, Ontario’s first cottage country, an hour north of Toronto. People used to travel to this little Lake Simcoe community from Toronto by radial railway (somehow that sounds incredibly civilized!). Two and three-night Christmas packages are available. If you’re a crowd, look into their lakeside family lodges. They sleep up to twelve comfortably. Highlights of a Briars holiday itinerary include a mulled cider welcome, an Irish Coffee party, a champagne breakfast followed by guided country walks or horse-drawn sleigh ride. They’ve even got a treat-making workshop for winter birdwatchers. On Christmas Eve, a festive buffet dinner with live entertainment and a visit from Santa is planned. Christmas Day includes the resort’s annual snow golf tournament followed by a punch party and a Christmas feast with all the trimmings. There’s also an afternoon at the movies, and to work off all the food and drink, a fitness centre with indoor pool, sauna and hot tub. Yoga lovers, don’t forget your mats! There are yoga classes here too, along with a wonderful spa.
Two more inns sent us their Christmas menus this week. Both have loyal food-loving fans:

The Little Inn of Bayfield, 45 minutes west of Stratford on Lake Huron, is Ontario’s oldest hostelry. In the 1830s it operated as a stagecoach stop. Today it caters to those with a nose for fine food and wine. Cooking class weekends and winemaker’s dinners are held every month. Positive reviews have come from a long line of respected Canadian and US food writers. Every year, the Little Inn posts its Christmas menus on its website. A quick peek by yours truly made my mouth water. All Christmas meals will be paired with outstanding Ontario VQA wines and depending on the meal, meal prices range between $45 and $100 per person. If you and your significant other or the family want to make an overnight of it, check the Little Inn’s selection of one to four-night Christmas packages.

In early September, I blogged about my visit to the Millcroft Inn & Spa with a Canwest food writer. Roberto Fracchioni is the well-loved chef here. He hosts monthly cooking sessions that always draw a crowd. This holiday season Chef Fracchioni has planned a Christmas Day Dinner menu as well as two Christmas menus suitable for larger family gatherings. Lots of house delicacies are on all three menus. Dinners run between $56 and $65 per person. Chef Fracchioni and Pastry Chef Enrico Schulze will also create a customized menu experience if you want your own holiday event. Now, that would be a treatl! The Millcroft has a spa that is one of the largest in Ontario. Its spa menu for men has received a lot of attention. A Winter Bliss getaway ties this inn’s spa and culinary together nicely. It includes a three-course dinner for two, breakfasts, a $100 spa credit, and an ovennight at the inn. Priced per person from $282, double occupancy, Sunday through Thursdays. On Saturdays, the price is slightly higher at $295 pp/do.

I always enjoy the rush at the last minute when I’d be shopping like mad on December 24th for my last minute gifts.

The mall would have midnight madness at the Seaway Mall, Pen Center or Fairview Mall . Here you will find a website where you will find a phone directory, fashion, designer and La Moda Shoes.

It’s time for the ladies to go buy some lovely boots and coats for themselves.

I found some great deals at Winners and Zellers.

Coats are 30% off at Zellers and it’s just what Santa ordered.

I found some really nice boots there too.

As for my Christmas Shopping, I’ll be checking out the flea markets in several cities.

That’s the best place for deals on designer hand bags, hats, scarves and purses. (London rocks for Flea Market variety in this category)

There’s also unique furniture and custom made dressers, tables and bookcases. (Pickering Flea Market has a great selection)

The St Catharines Flea Market has specials on baked goods, meats, candies, collectibles, Betty Boop, furniture, pets (rabbit and bird food at a discount).

Fresh produce, furniture, tools, books, fishing gear, stereo equipment, cds, and records.

My favorite stand is Fuzzy’s.

She sells books for $1 and makes the best banana bread for $1.50.

Dave sells incense, special herbal products.

You can even buy a bunny for $10, finches for $10, doves and budgies for under $25 including the cages and food.

We go to the Flea Markets all the time, and find all sorts of cool things to clutter our house with.

Sometime’s we’ll go there for breakfast or lunch, everything is under $5.

Some Flea Markets have a cover charge from 50 cents to 1 dollar.

While other’s charge nothing.

When times are tough you’ve got to look for the best bargains.

I was sad to see that my XPress chinese store was no longer at Niagara Square.

I loved buying Chinese art pieces for my home.

However there is a good gift shop at Niagara Square that sells meditation and classical CDs for $15. (everywhere else they are $30 to $35 for the same ones)

I’ll keep you posted if I see any more bargains out there.

The Niagara Falls are voluminous waterfalls on the Niagara River, straddling the international borde

The Niagara Falls are voluminous waterfalls on the Niagara River, straddling the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. The falls are 17 miles (27 km) north-northwest of Buffalo, New York and 75 miles (120 km) south-southeast of Toronto, Ontario, between the twin cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York.

Historically, the Niagara Region is one of the richest areas in all of Canada and much of that history has been preserved and is available to the visitor.
While not exceptionally high, the Niagara Falls are very wide. More than six million cubic feet (168,000 m³) of water falls over the crest line every minute in high flow, and almost 4 million cubic feet (110,000 m³) on average. It is the most powerful waterfall in North America.

The Niagara Falls are renowned both for their beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Managing the balance between recreational, commercial, and industrial uses has been a challenge for the stewards of the falls since the 1800s.

The mighty river plunges over a cliff of dolostone and shale. Niagara Falls is the second largest falls on the globe next to Victoria Falls in southern Africa.

One fifth of all the fresh water in the world lies in the four Upper Great Lakes-Michigan, Huron, Superior and Erie. All the outflow empties into the Niagara river and eventually cascades over the falls. The water flow on the American side of the falls is much less in strength because of Goat Island, whereas Horseshoe Falls has no obstruction to divert it. It should be noted that a third much narrower falls exists. Over the years these falls have been called at different times; Luna Falls, Iris Falls and is currently named Bridal Veil Falls.

The tremendous volume of water never stops flowing, However, the falling water and mist create ice formations along the banks of the falls and river. This can result in mounds of ice as thick as fifty feet. If the Winter is cold for long enough, the ice will completely stretch across the river and form what is known as the “ice bridge”. This ice bridge can extend for several miles down river until it reaches the area known as the lower rapids. Until 1912,visitors were allowed to actually walk out on the ice bridge and view the Falls from below. February 24th of 1888 the local newspaper reported that at least 20,000 people watched or tobogganed on the ice. Shanties selling liquor, photographs and curiosities abounded. On February 4th 1912 the ice bridge broke up and 3 tourists lives were lost.

This is a video of me (sitting in the lawn chair at the start) and my little brother, Mathew (behind the shed yelling bear noises at the start).
I posted this video on YouTube about July 2008 (the summer before ninth grade, I believe. I was thirteen, Mathew was … nine, I think?).
It was about a year and a half ago, I believe. It feels like it was longer, though.
There’s been a lot that’s happened since then.

I started high school.
I won an art award.
I went through 9 exams.
I went camping at a beautiful provincial park with the student’s council.
I gained like, 10 of some of my best friends in the world at pathfinders.
I got a facebook account.
I got a blog.
I’ve attempted to finish writing several novels.
I got an iPod.
I went ‘out west’ for the third time in my life.
I visited Vancouver for the first time in my life.
I dipped my feet in the Pacific ocean.
I went to my first high school dance.
I went to Niagara Falls on a (geography class) field trip with some really great people and got in trouble with the teachers because we brought too much sugary pop and chips for our own good and all had sugar rushes at midnight.
I had the time of my life in Dinner Theatre.
I discovered a secret passageway in my school’s proproom hidden behind shelves.
I invented the word ‘AWESOMAZING’.
I’ve made a zillion more people laugh.
I joined my city’s youth council.
I met the mayor.
I discovered Twilight a few weeks after the above video was filmed.
I’ve come to terms with myself. (I am not so ashamed of who I am anymore. Because I am awesomazing.)
I spent a night in a haunted hotel.
I contacted a ghost. (One of my BFF’s birthday party. Her place was haunted so we pretended to be like TAPS.)
I sang ‘Tomorrow’ (from Annie) at the top of my lungs in the middle of a forest while cleaning an outhouse.
I sang ‘Tomorrow’ (from Annie) at the top of my lungs in the middle of a forest with some of my very best friends.
I have learned that everything has flaws but that doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful and perfect by all means.
My kitten turned three years old.
I discovered that I truly would prefer world peace over all the money in the world anyday.
I have done way more than I ever thought I would and today it has occured to me that the past two years of my life have been worth every second, and I wouldn’t change anything at all.
I really truly wouldn’t.
