I thought it would be an interesting exercise to survey what people were reading around me. As I’m lazy, I’ll just question the people who I happen to talk to at the time. So it’ll be random friends and family. As they are all very different from me and have varied reading tastes, it should be an interesting list – and who knows what surprising recommendations we’ll uncover. I won’t name names, just the titles. I was hoping to make this a monthly thing but realised I don’t actually talk books with that many people … but I’m working on it. Enjoy.

This month my school friends whom I have known for over 20 years have been reading:

A Snowball in Hell by Christopher Brookmyre
The Murder Room by P.D. James
The Last Pope by Luis Miguel Rocha
Labyrinth by Kate Mosse
The Host by Stephanie Meyer
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

Out of these books, I’ve read the 2nd, 4th and 6th books and have the 5th in my TBR pile.

My sister asked if I wanted to go to Portobello Market in Notting Hill on Sunday, and as I hadn’t been there for a while, I thought why not? (Although I will be going to the Electric Cinema there next Sunday to watch New Moon – I cannot wait to see the wolf pack. I can’t help it, I’m Team Jacob.) But it was raining and we found ourselves hiding for cover in the Book and Comic Exchange shop which I had recently read about in Stuck in a Book’s post. Naturally I thought of his post and made a dash for the basement where there were indeed three rooms full of books for 50p, and I came away with 5 books (two were for a pound each)!

Good Behaviour by Molly Keane
The Tortoise and the Hare by Elizabeth Jenkins
The Women’s Room by Marilyn French
Principles of Angels by Jaine Fenn
A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow by George R.R. Martin (Book 3 of A Song of Ice and Fire)

They had a pretty good science fiction and fantasy section in a little alcove at the top of the stairs and I saw someone with two volumes of the Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson (yes, he was clutching a copy of The Confusion which I was eyeing intently but he breezed away with the book and I had to say goodbye to it).

It was raining so heavily we ended up running into several shops but turned back before we even hit the market, stopping by to grab some gelato as we walked back to the car. They had chocolate wasabi flavour which was rather yummy, but I opted for my favourite coffee gelato.

And … I also got these at my local charity shop last week:

True Blood by Charlaine Harris (I am loving the tv series)
The Pursuit of Love & Love in a Cold Climate by Nancy Mitford (I read this years ago at boarding school and have the DVD)

And … I bought this from Amazon:

Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within by Natalie Goldberg – this is for creative research purposes so I don’t feel guilty about purchasing it.

The Turtles
A turtle family decided to go on a picnic. The turtles, being naturally slow about things, took seven years to prepare for their outing. Finally the turtle family left home looking for a suitable place. During the second year of their journey they found a place ideal for them at last! For about six months they cleaned the area, unpacked the picnic basket, and completed the arrangements. Then they discovered they had forgotten the salt. A picnic without salt would be a disaster, they all agreed. After a lengthy discussion, the youngest turtle was chosen to retrieve the salt from home. Although he was the fastest of the slow moving turtles, the little turtle whined, cried, and wobbled in his shell. He agreed to go on one condition that no one would eat until he returned. The family consented and the little turtle left.Three years passed and the little turtle had not returned. Five years… six years… then on the seventh year of his absence, the oldest turtle could no longer contain his hunger. He announced that he was going to eat and begun to unwrap a sandwich.

At that point the little turtle suddenly popped out from behind a tree shouting, ‘See! I knew you wouldn’t wait. Now I am not going to go get the salt.’

Some of us waste our time waiting for people to live up to our expectations. We are so concerned about what others are doing that we do not do anything ourselves.
************ ********* ********* *********

The Frogs

A farmer came into town and asked the owner of a restaurant if he could use a million frog legs. The restaurant owner was shocked and asked the man where he could get so many frog legs!

The farmer replied, “There is a pond near my house that is full of frogs – millions of them. They all croak all night long and they are about to make me crazy!”

So the restaurant owner and the farmer made an agreement that the farmer would deliver frogs to the restaurant, five hundred at a time for the next several weeks.

The first week, the farmer returned to the restaurant looking rather sheepish, with two scrawny little frogs.

The restaurant owner said, “Well… where are all the frogs?”

The farmer said, “I was mistaken. There were only these two frogs in the pond. But they sure were making a lot of noise!”

Next time you hear somebody criticizing or making fun of you, remember, it’s probably just a couple of noisy frogs. Also remember that problems always seem bigger in the dark. Have you ever lay in your bed at night worrying about things which seem almost overwhelming like a million frogs croaking? Chances are pretty good that when the morning comes, and you take a closer look, you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about.

************ ********* ********* *********

The Pretty Lady

Once upon a time a big monk and a little monk were travelling together. They came to the bank of a river and found the bridge was damaged. They had to wade across the river. There was a pretty lady who was stuck at the damaged bridge and couldn’t cross the river.
The big monk offered to carry her across the river on his back. The lady accepted. The little monk was shocked by the move of the big monk.

“How can big brother carry a lady when we are supposed to avoid all intimacy with females?” thought the little monk. But he kept quiet…

The big monk carried the lady across the river and the small monk followed unhappily. When they crossed the river, the big monk let the lady down and they parted ways with her.

All along the way for several miles, the little monk was very unhappy with the act of the big monk. He was making up all kinds of accusations about big monk in his head. This got him madder and madder. But he still kept quiet. And the big monk had no inclination to explain his situation.
Finally, at a rest point many hours later, the little monk could not stand it any further, he burst out angrily at the big monk.

“How can you claim yourself a devout monk, when you seize the first opportunity to touch a female, especially when she is very pretty? All your teachings to me make you a big hypocrite.”

The big monk looked surprised and said, “I had put down the pretty lady at the river bank many hours ago, how come you are still carrying her along?”

This very old Chinese Zen story reflects the thinking of many people today. We encounter many unpleasant things in our life, they irritate us and they make us angry. Sometimes, they cause us a lot of hurt, sometimes they cause us to be bitter or jealous.

But like the little monk, we are not willing to let them go away. We keep on carrying the baggage of the ‘pretty lady’ with us. Why?

Simply because we are not willing to put down or let go of the baggage of the ‘pretty lady’.

We should let go of the pretty lady immediately after crossing the river. This will immediately remove all our agonies. There is no need to be further hurt by the unpleasant event after it is over.

There were some interesting people about this week: On Wednesday, it was back to LCC for another ins

There were some interesting people about this week:

On Wednesday, it was back to LCC for another installment of the Talking Graphics series, this time with a new twist focussing on an area which I seem to be hearing & learning more and more about – service design:

“At a time when design thinking is reaching way beyond the design profession, it’s time to take stock and ask: Is design thinking the way forward for solving complex ‘wicked’ problems such as security and development? Can designers really design anything they turn their hands to? Are there limits to design thinking and, if so, what are they?”
Speakers & Panel included Derek B Miller & Lisa Rudnick (Security Needs Assessment Protocol, U.N. Institute for Disarmament Research), Daniel Dickens (Southwark Circle – who have been letting me help out with stuff recently), Alison Prendiville (LCC/Cranfield), Joe Heapy (Engine) and the think tank for the 2020 Public Services Trust at the RSA (read more about that here)

There’s a podcast of the talk somewhere in the Internet - if anyone’s interested it would definitely be well worth a listen…

Next up was another trip into the D&AD bubble, this time with Paula Scher at the helm:

She is a fascinatingly entertaining woman with mountains of great work to tell stories about, including this lot:

and she said this:

” the goal of design is to improve the expectation of what design could be”…”corporations aren’t bad. they’re just made up of lots of people. And people are difficult.”…”be culturally literate, because if you don’t have any understanding of the world you live in and the culture you live in, you’re not going to express anything to anybody else”

Yup, you guessed it. I somehow stumbled into a secondhand bookshop or two and came away with some books. And it happened a few weeks ago. Who am I kidding, I can’t seem to stop buying books. Anyway, they were gems and I just had to have them. What did I get, I hear you ask. Excellent question. Well, I got the following:

The Great Western Beach: A Memoir of a Cornish Childhood between the Wars by Emma Smith – I can’t seem to resist anything about the interwar years, and especially after this review.

The Language of Bees by Laurie R. King – the latest in the mystery series featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes set during the interwar years. I read the first two books in the series and was pretty impressed with the period details and how well King introduced Sherlock Holmes into Mary Russell’s world without causing offence.

Passionate Minds: The Great Scientific Affair by David Bodanis – about Voltaire and the great mathematician and aristocrat Émilie du Châtelet in Enlightenment France. I’ve been intrigued about Émilie du Châtelet, who popularised Newton, after seeing a documentary about her many years ago.

Picking Bones from Ashes by Marie Mutsuki Mockett – this one I bought new because it’s Mockett’s first book and I like to support new writers. It’s also about Japan and about being mixed (Mockett is also half-Japanese and reminds me of the lovely tribal bellydancer Sharon Kihara.)

Currently I’m two thirds through A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I had tried to read it earlier in the year and only got through about 20 pages, but this time I’m like a hedgehog caught in GRRM’s headlights. It’s brilliant so far, and I cannot wait to see the HBO pilot which I think they’ve finished casting. Hello, Sean Bean!

And with it a new set of hopes and desires – the desire to be free to do and think what I want

And with it a new set of hopes and desires – the desire to be free to do and think what I want, be creative when the mood takes and enjoy laughter with family and friends.

It always amazes me how every day is different, each starts roughly the same way but as the seconds, minutes and hours tick by a new sense of something, no matter how small is realised. Is this what getting old is all about, is there an age where time seems to fly by or do we simply not have the time to stop and be “free” in the busy world we live in. Oh to have time to sit and enjoy the garden or the sun rising or setting, listening to the birds happily chirping in the cool onset of Winter, at what age does freedom really set in and become a part of us so that we able to be one?

Freedom, what does it mean, is it just a word that people use to dream up a satisfactory state of mind, or is it real with some living a totally free life, enjoying each second with relish?

Freedom to me is simply being, happy to be alone or laugh in company. Comfortable at work, enjoying the banter and happily working alongside others in a creative and innovative team. Being able to enjoy the countryside, happy in the knowledge that freedom is all around us, we only have to embrace it.

Freedom by Nan Witcomb

FREE, as the wind upon the ocean,
free, as a bird about to fly,
free, as a tiger in a jungle, -
freedom, that’s the universal cry
but do we cry
for freedom without thinking -
like a child wants everything he sees -
do we know that freedom can be lonely ………..
do we really have the courage
to be free ?
Free, as a gypsey in the winter,
free, as a bird without a sky,
free, as a dolphin without water, freedom -
that’s the universal cry …….

Nan Witcombe, Thoughts of Nanushka

Is it that when we go through change we experience all these things or is it that change instills a feeling of fear even when it is leading to freedom and a new life to live?

Thoughts of a Monday, in a sunny Newcastle!

Chica, a.k.a Yashica G 35.

I got this story from one of my friends in Australia. It is a good and inspiring one. Especially for reminding us the importance of working together and mutual respect.

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, ‘Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.’ The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man’s mouth water. The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful. But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, ‘You have seen Hell.’

They then went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man’s mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, ‘I don’t understand.’ ‘It is simple,’ said the Lord. ‘It requires but one skill. You see they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.’

I know, I know, I just stocked up on Persephones last week and here I am again, writing another list of books I acquired. That’s the problem with running into second hand bookshops. This time it was the Oxfam bookshop on Marylebone High Street. When I was working near there, I used to pop in every few weeks just to see what there was, but these days I rarely go near there, so when I had the chance last Saturday, I scooted right in. And look what I found.

The Tenderness of Wolves by Steff Penney
A Pale View of Hills by Kazuo Ishiguro
The Indian Clerk by David Leavitt
Maharanis by Lucy Moore
Kapitza in Cambridge and Moscow edited by J.W. Boag, P.E. Rubinin and D. Shoenberg

In the book blogging world, people’s thoughts and prospective reading material have slowly turned towards Autumn and the slightly chilly. Considering how much I read, it’s never crossed my mind to read seasonally before. And so many people do so, which surprised me at first, yet makes so much sense. And all of a sudden I felt like searching out Steff Penney’s The Tenderness of Wolves which has had so many great reviews and won the 2006 Costa Book of the Year. And the day after I put it on my wish list, I spy it in the Oxfam bookshop. Once again, I cry fate! And David Leavitt’s The Indian Clerk about the Indian mathematician Ramanujan together with the book on Russian physicist Kapitza is a no brainer, both early twentieth century history of science related books (that includes fiction too!) And the Ishiguro is one I haven’t read but have heard good things about, and Maharanis because I like reading about the Indian Sub-continent and if it’s about the 1930s even better. Pretty good selection and all for £13.

Dei umas barbeiradas com o esquema do filme (tinha que ter né) e acabei perdendo algumas fotos com isso, mas de maneira geral gostei bastante do primeiro resultado com a maquininha.

Vou colocar as melhores aqui pra vocês opinarem.

For books, of course. It was a surprisingly sunny day today, just when I was adjusting my inner cloc

For books, of course. It was a surprisingly sunny day today, just when I was adjusting my inner clock to welcome chilly Autumn, there is sunshine in London. I’ve been reading about the Persephone Reading Week Challenge hosted by The B Files and Paperback Reader in the last few weeks, and although I was too late to participate, I’ve been thinking about visiting the Persephone Bookshop for the last few days. And why not today? It’s sunny, I could go and have a light lunch in one of my favourite cafés in the heart of Bloomsbury, purchase some Persephone books and round off the afternoon with a quick visit to the British Museum. It’s funny how when you live in London, you don’t really do London things. You get stuck in your commute during the week and don’t feel like venturing into the sea of people on your days off. But sunshine changes everything.

So I took a bus down to the British Library next to St. Pancras Station, walked down Judd Street and right at the bottom, just before the Brunswick Centre is a cute little French café called Pâtisserie Deux Amis where I enjoyed my favourite baguette, chicken, bacon, cranberry and mayonnaise. Yum, yum. It’s a tiny place but they have the best baguettes, pastries, good coffee and radio four in the background. It’s where I used to get my lunch when I was writing up my thesis at the British Library and has remained unchanged in the past ten years. They do good soup too and a proper pâté baguette (you don’t get much of that in London).

After feeling nicely full, I walked down to the revamped Brunswick Centre, and what do I find? Skoob! Yes, that legendary secondhand bookshop that used to be in Sicilian Avenue near the London School of Economics but which closed down over ten years ago. I had been lamenting it’s loss for so long and didn’t realise they had reopened elsewhere! I found a couple of books there on the twenties and thirties and stopped myself from buying anything else as they were pretty heavy and I still had to make my way to the Persephone Bookshop.

It was only another ten minutes to walk down to Lambs Conduit Street (I love that name!) and start perusing the shelves of dovegrey Persephones. I had made a mental list of what I was interested in, but totally forgot when I got there. There were only a couple of other people there, so I took my time reading the titles. I caught sight of the Persephone Notebook (I want!) but as I already have a large collection of notebooks at home, I contented myself with purchasing the following:

Good Evening, Mrs. Craven: The Wartime Stories of Mollie Panter-Downes
Family Roundabout by Richmal Crompton
Someone at a Distance by Dorothy Whipple

I confess I bought the the Dorothy Whipple purely for the cover. It’s just so beautiful. I also still have Nicola Beauman’s A Very Great Profession: The Woman’s Novel 1914-1939 safely stashed away in my TBR pile. I came away with their catalogue which I have already marked with the titles that I want, but they will have to wait until I’ve read these.

I finished off my outing with a quick dash around the Great Court in the British Museum. It’s one of my favourite places in London and that roof is just beautiful.

Currently I’m reading The Lost Dog by Michelle de Kretser, longlisted for both the 2008 Man Booker Prize and 2009 Orange Prize which I’m loving. Her prose is sublime and I’m savouring every word. And after that I’m planning to read A Game of Thrones by G.R.R. Martin (finally!), so my Persephones will have to wait.

You can visit Deux Amis at 63 Judd Street, London WC1H 9QT, Tel: 020 7383 7029.

On a day of distressing news about drug dealers, mandatory sentences, and the ensuing political battles therein, you might want to head into the weekend with a really, really nice story from the Star’s Ryan Young about a football player in St. Joe. And in case the story doesn’t tug at your emotions — in which case we’d contend you have a heart of stone — then this video of the event in question certainly will. Nice to know that even in a time of rampant incivility, there can still occur an instance like this in our area. Bravo, Matt.

Mel from The Reading Life has kindly given me this award which I’m loving. If I can add to someone’s TBR pile then my mission is accomplished. It’s great when someone reads a book you like and enjoys it too. If they don’t, at least they’ve given it a go.

Since I’ve started reading book blogs, my TBR list has exploded exponentially. So many different titles in so many different genres. I admit I tend to focus on the genres I like (mysteries, sff, history), but I’m open to suggestion as I occasionally need to read outside my comfort zone.

Here are some of the blogs that I really enjoy reading. I always come away feeling warm and happy and with an extra long wishlist.

A Work in Progress
Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist
Dovegreyreader Scribbles
Writer’s Read
The Elegant Variation
Stainless Steel Droppings
su[shu]

Go on, have a look and see what you can find.
