Kavel Rafferty has created 10 images of typical Barcelona bars and bodegas for her exhibition at Heliogàbal. The images mimic faded discarded Polaroid photos from the 70s using the instantly recognisable square format, muted colours and blurred textures . Kavel wants to celebrate these sometimes shabby hidden treasures of Barcelona, cañas, anchovies, formica tables, ashtrays, handwritten signs, tapas, tiled walls, vermouth, cafe con leche, barrels of red wine…
Kavel loves these bars, an integral part of the tapestry of Barcelona, Kavel records some of the details from these bars before they disappear from the city completely.

Exhibition starts 10th of December 2009.
Framed signed cellulose prints are 100€ each.

Today’s nice thing came unexpectedly during our multi-stop lunch adventure WHEN I found out that I can get a 10% discount at Port of Pyraeus (which serves up “healthy portions” of greek salads and other delicitites and is WAY better than the bread-to-filling-ratio impaired sandwiches at Subway).

Oh also my mom is not in jail, which is always nice.

NOT SO NICE THING: other people have to contribute nice things or cynicism will slowly kill us all…or at least crush our souls. and I’ll stop making brownies.

SO I have proven that I am not completely technologically incompetant and have *actually* managed to set up this blog

The tagline was supposed to be “Fighting the good fight against cynicism” (hi Andrew) but for some reason it’s not showing up. Apparently I’m still at least moderately technologically incompetant…we’ll work on that.

Yesterday I found a penny. It was heads up. Still awaiting the supposed good luck that was supposed to come with it…I’ll keep you posted.

Today I found a new place to get lunch. It’s called “The Brown Bag” and is basically a wannabe Au Bon Pain. BUT I got a decent salad in a cool little container so it qualifies as a nice thing.

Lastly, in the spirit of nice things, I’m getting back to baking tonight, so brownies and/or cookies in the cool room tomorrow.

I have finally come up with a name for my gallery *Galeria Kavel* and decided on an opening date.
The short list for names included, Kavelish, Kavelery, Kavelita and Kavel’s Head. I like Galeria Kavel because it’s a Spanish and Catalan word mixed with my name, simple!
I will be stocking work by artists such as Rob Ryan, Lucky Bird, Marcus Walters, Hazel Nicholls and of course lots of my own illustrations
Opening date is Saturday the 12th of December, just in time for some Christmas shopping!

Today I’m going to color my hair (i bleached it the day before yesterday now gotta add in color so its not brassy n stuff.) , paint my nails (black of course), give myself a pedicure (red toe nails look awesome with my gold flip flops), and finish that spring cleaning list I have been working on. My neice and my daughter have offered to help me get this place squared away… for a nominal fee of course. Im hoping $40 a piece will cover it because I cant afford to pay them my rates lol. But with the 3 of us working on it we should have it done in no time. Right? I had to go through the closet and figure out what I can and cant wear since my surgery. It was sad to bag up the size 5s and 8s. I folded everything up and put it in big bags to go downstairs but the bags are still sitting at the foot of the bed. Its like I am hoping that I will magically become a size 5 or 8 again. Sigh. I had to go shopping afterward since I only had 2 pairs of normal pants that fit. How depressing. I had to get size 12s to go around the swelly belly but the butts and thighs are so saggy. But I only got 3 pairs because I refuse to fill my closet up with stuff that in a few months will be way too big. No skirts or shorts either. I have 1 pair of jeans shorts for running around on my days off in (if it ever warms up enough for shorts that is) but those were given to me. I worked way too hard on putting together the wardrobe I have now. I love Goodwill for shopping for stuff I like that I cant afford to hit Kohl’s or Macy’s for. Eventually someone in my size gets rid of perfectly good clothes lol. I did get a really neat catalog in the mail yesterday though and found a couple of maxi dresses I have to have that are reasonably priced. But thats for next paycheck. So its been an entire week on the estrogen stuff. I think I am managing better. I dont feel like I am going to rip someone’s head off and spit down the hole if they look at me wrong. Plus i think its helping that i am blogging stuff that really gets to me. Sorry if i seem venomous sometimes. I promise im not usually but somedays stuff just really gets to me. but atleast not so much now with the estrogen. And I am all excited. Monday I go pick up my new partial. Having your teeth knocked out by your ex sort of does something to a person. It will be nice to smile and have beautiful teeth again. Yep I’ll still have the gap. At least until I can save up enough to go have that fixed. But at least I wont have the gaping hole on the one side of my teeth anymore. Speaking of saving money. I have decided that I am going to save up the money for hair extensions. I think it would be awesome to have really long hair and this ay I can have it without having to wait years for it to finally grow out again lol. Oh and i had an “aha” moment last night about my Fibromyalgia. So how do they test you for it? They poke you hard in a few places right? Well the sweet babboo pokes me last night while goofing around and it hurt like a sumbish. Then he says “wheres my stick?” like he’s gonna spank me and I cant help grinning. (Gawd i love a good spanking) Anyway he says, “whats up with that? I cant poke you but I can beat you with a stick?” I thought about it. Different kind of pain. The poke is in a specific spot the size of the tip of a finger right? But a spanking covers the whole booty. The pain of a spanking doesnt go clear down to the muscles underneath. Its a surface sort of pain. Now if he were poking me all over I probably wouldnt enjoy it at all. Because poking goes clear down to the muscles under the fat and skin. So yay for that lil aha moment. And then on Tuesday is my 6 week checkup. YAY!!! Maybe I will get to FINALLY have sex again. I miss sex. I have been missing sex since the day of the surgery. I woke up from a nap the day I got home having an orgasm. I thought I had lost my mind. For crying out loud I had just had surgery you know? But then I was reading on a forum dedicated to hysterectomies and I was happy to find out that I was definitely not alone. Apparently this is a pretty common reaction to the surgery. Well that kinda sucks because here you are in major pain (and definitely not the good kind) having to deal with being horny as hell and you cant do a damn thing about it until your surgeon releases you to have sex again. 6 weeks or longer waiting time. I swear I thought I was going to lose my mind. I have never cried over a lack of sex before. I mean literally bawling. I didnt think I could make it. But I did! And the sweet babboo made it too so props for him! I just hope he takes things REALLY slowly with me that first time. I dont know how my body is going to react and all. Well anywho I suppose I had better get off this thing and get something accomplished today….. naaaaaaaaah… surfin time lol

1.) You are lying there, feeling fat from your recent surgery, no makeup, hair plastered to your head, trying not to sweat to death in the mugginess when out of nowhere he starts looking at you. You ask “What?” and he says “Nothing, I was just picturing you lying naked on a bed of rose petals.”

2.) He drops you off at work and you point out your “stalker” (the guy who comes in and hangs out for hours while you are trying to get your work done and who came into work everyday while you were out sick trying to find out if you were coming back anytime soon.) on the sly. When your man kisses you goodbye the “stalker” goes out and sits in his car but doesn’t leave. Your man’s hackles go up and he jots down the guys license plate number before he leaves. He then calls you from home an hour or so later and when you tell him the guy is still sitting in his car out front, tells you to tell one of the police officers when they come in. Then at 3am calls again to find out if you are still okay.

3.) He brags to near strangers that you could out-fry the Colonel when it comes to chicken, that your chocolate chip cookies are to die for and that nobody does fish fry better than you… hands down.

4.) You forget to put your new partials in before you run to the store and when you mention it halfway there says “Never mind, you look gorgeous anyway.”

5.) You mention the tortilla chips your are nibbling in bed while watching a movie would taste better with some chili and melted cheese. He hops up throws on his shoes and runs to the store for chili and mozzarella cheese.

6.) It’s 2 am and all you can think about is how nice a 7up would taste. Theres a blizzard going on but he crawls out of bed and drives 3 miles to the nearest open store and buys you the biggest 7up he can get.

7.) The taco bell close to your house is closed and you dont want burgers so he drives across town so you can have a taco salad at 10pm.

8.) You saw a guy using fish bells and mention that that would be fun to do to a couple of the poles. He shows up with fish bells for the next fishing trip.

9.) You usually get mosquito bit all over your butt (literally) everytime you go fishing. So the next time you go out fishing he brings bug dope and practically soaks your butt in it. Or he brings a thick blanket to cover your lawn chair so they wont bite you.

I seem to be thinking of things to blog about faster than I can make time to blog, so there is a bit of a backlog of the trivial stuff of my life to share.

Some lovely gifts – well, I bought the dragonfly hair/shawl pins myself from Etsy.  I’ve found it hard to find shawl pins I like, and not being a button person, I’m keen on using them to fasten cardigans as well as shawls.  These are a good length (most hair sticks are too long generally to use as shawl pins), and will work with chunkier or holier knits.  As they are horn, they are nice and light.

The fabulous cuff is a gift from a friend just returned from New York, and is made from a vinyl record!  It’s by this maker and I love it, it fits so well.  Mr. Foxy wants to try a pin and paper cone to find out what record it was!

And I was lucky to receive more goodies from the Bendigo Woollen Mills Users Group Op Shop swap.  Despite moving house at the time, Kylie managed some great op shop finds.  The Bendigo yarn is a 4ply cotton in a lovely colour I’m unfamiliar with, orchid.  The vintage pillow cases will make great dresses for the girls. 

Most exciting of all for me are the vintage patterns.  A fabulous 1950’s New Idea knitting special and a rare 1940’s pattern book.  I especially love these patterns.  Thanks Kylie!

In knitting news I did finish the Shetland Triangle shawl in time for my aunt’s 80th birthday party (a preview features on my new header), and I have just started on a project for the girls, but I’ll save these for another post …
