Making a difference in Parkinson’s disease: An audit of patient perspectives,   Sharon Reading , Patricia McGee , British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, Vol. 5, Iss. 11, 13 Nov 2009, pp 496 – 501

Abstract:

Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects approximately 120 000 people in the UK with an age range from people in their 30s upwards. The classic signs of PD are slowness and poverty of movement, tremor and rigidity. Patients experience motor and non-motor complications and some papers suggest up to 80% of patients may go on to develop dementia. PD is a chronic progressive illness with no known cure. Treatment is based on individual need as there is much variation in symptoms. Three years ago, National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for the care of people with Parkinson’s were published (2006). However, two leading charities have recently completed surveys which show that large numbers of patients remain unhappy with the overall care they receive.
In Newcastle, a team of Parkinson’s disease nurse specialists conducted an audit of the service they provide. The main aims were to survey the quality of the service from the patients’ perspective and to provide a model for future development based on the findings. The key tool was a patient satisfaction survey of 300 people attending the outpatient clinics.

From 209 completed questionnaires, only two patients reported overall dissatisfaction. This article looks at the areas that patients found particularly helpful such as daily telephone advice lines and home visits and those where there was room for improvement such as access to information.

Cherchant par tous les moyens à faire diversion et à oublier que la Région PACA qu’il dirige depuis 1998 est l’une des championnes de France de l’explosion fiscale et de l’endettement, Monsieur VAUZELLE vient d’annoncer qu’il déposerait « début décembre un texte au Conseil constitutionnel pour dénoncer l’inconstitutionnalité du projet de réforme sur les collectivités territoriales ».

J’avoue tout d’abord avoir du mal à comprendre de quel « texte » il s’agit : soit il veut parler d’une proposition de loi, et c’est alors à l’Assemblée nationale qu’il doit le faire, soit il veut déférer le projet de loi du Gouvernement au Conseil constitutionnel, mais il devra dans ce cas attendre que celui soit voté et être pour cela soutenu par 59 autres de ses collègues comme le prévoit l’article 61 de notre Constitution…. L’éphémère Garde des Sceaux qu’il a été devrait quand même le savoir si le député intermittent qu’il est ne s’en souvient plus…

Mais le plus étonnant ne tient pas dans cette imprécision. Ce qui m’interpelle le plus c’est que Monsieur VAUZELLE a même déclaré à la presse qu’il déposerait son fameux « texte » « le 2 décembre » précisant qu’il avait spécialement choisi cette date « en souvenir du coup d’Etat »… On croit rêver !

Chacun aura compris qu’il fait en effet référence au coup d’Etat du 2 décembre 1851 par lequel Louis Napoléon BONAPARTE renversa la République parlementaire et prépara la restauration de l’Empire…je vous laisse apprécier la référence.

Monsieur VAUZELLE montre ainsi la vraie nature de son engagement acharnée contre la réforme des collectivités locales : comme Louis Napoléon BONAPARTE, il entend ainsi seulement préserver ses privilèges et assurer par tous les moyens sa réélection.

Et comme Louis Napoléon BONAPARTE, Monsieur VAUZELLE peut compter sur l’aide de ses fidèles dans son projet, au premier rang desquels Monsieur LE PEN grâce auquel il a été élu et réélu.

Dan Mangan – Nice, Nice, Very Nice [9.8/10]
I think this is my favourite album from this year. Cute, teddy-bear-ish-looking singer-songwriter from Canada. He makes you feel loved inside. Good, strong and dynamic songs, nice vocals, good instrumental work, wonderful lyrics. The best indie pop album from this year. It’s unbelievable that he’s just 25 (date-material! haha!). Dan’s a keeper and you should keep your eye on him!

Andrew Bird – Noble Beast/Useless Creatures [9.5/10]
Again, a masterpiece made by Andrew Bird. It’s balanced, beautiful and unique. It’s pop, folk, it’s wonderfull. I only miss the electric guitar a bit. Still, great lyrics, interesting, wonderfull compositions and vocally pretty strong. Useless Creatures is the best instrumental CD I’ve ever heard, might have even listened more to that one than to Noble Beast. Good Stuff.

St. Vincent – Actor [9/10]
Annie Clark manages to float above her instrumental chaos. Or at least, it looks like that. Her compositions are actually well made. Vocally, Clark is really strong. It’s a pretty unique CD that you’ll love or you’ll hate. I love it.

Jesca Hoop – Hunting My Dress [8.8/10]
To me, she’s live even stronger. Hoop mixes various styles and makes them her own. Great guitar work, great vocals. It might sound weird during your first listen, but it will grow. Especially ‘Murder of Birds’ is a wonderful track.

A.A. Bondy – When The Devil’s Loose[8/10]
I know I didn’t give A.A. Bondy such a high mark in my review. But the album did really grow on me. I listen to it a lot, so points for that!

Franz Ferdinand – Tonight[7.2/10]
Surprising new album from Franz Ferdinand. Still the have their own Franz sound. Good stuff. Typical Franz.

Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest[7/10]
Pretty interesting album, on moments to difficult for me to understand maybe. There are some ‘killer-tracks’ on it, but overall it’s just a pretty solid, nice, album that isn’t really my cup of tea at moments

Regina Spektor – Far [7/10]
Not as strong as Begin to Hope, but again a very good album. Spektor goes from weird classical stuff to pop, not being afraid of sounding ’silly’. Vocally strong, but you have to love her voice. No complains about her instrumental stuff, but it’s not really ‘new’. (Best tracks of the album are simply ‘Laughing With’ and ‘Folding Chair’, these are perfect songs)

Wilco – Wilco(the album) [7/10]
Wilco deliverd another good album. Still, it can’t beat Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but it’s a good try. It’s again the typical Wilco sound(that isn’t really my sound). But it’s a strong, balanced album.

Le parachutage à Toulon de Razzie Hamadi échoue et Michel Vauzelle s’affiche plus que jamais comme un seigneur qui contrôle son fief. Du coup, ça fait réfléchir aussi les communistes qui trainent des pieds pour appliquer la ligne du Front de gauche.
Les portables s’affolent dans le cabinet de Michel Vauzelle et dans les diverses fédérations du PS de PACA. C’est désormais officiel, l’ancienne icône du MJS national ambitionne un retour aux sources dans le Var. Mais voilà, tout le monde ne l’entend pas comme ça, et sa candidature apparaît rapidement comme un boulet pour Vauzelle et ses camarades. Jeudi soir, l’affaire semble entendue, Razzye Hammadi ne fait plus partie de la liste varoise. Un premier coup de semonce de la part des militants locaux est alors envoyé vers Solferino, le siège du PS. En substance, le message est clair et se résume ainsi : « Nous pouvons garder la région, ne nous plombez pas ! ».

I like my protagonist. She’s a perfectly nice girl who has a good head on her shoulders and makes good choices. I think these are all good things. It’s important to enjoy spending your time with your characters.
But you know something? She’s BORING.

She’s not making any really bad, dumb choices. She doesn’t do anything contemptible or regrettable. She doesn’t take huge risks. This doesn’t make for good drama.

And what’s worse? I’m nice, too. I like to see people succeed. But moreso, I like to see people comfortable. This is part of my personality. I’m a peacekeeper.

But, again, good people doing good things does not make for good drama.

So, what to do?

Well, I need to flesh out my protagonist. I’m going to give her some bigger flaws than just self-confidence issues- and I’m going to make those have higher stakes. She needs to make mistakes. I have an idea of what these may be, but they’ll need to be fleshed out. And they need to be very much extensions of her personality.

The truth is, writing really isn’t easy for nice people. It’s hard for us to put our characters through hell, to see them suffer and screw up. But it’s a job requirement.
Kurt Vonnegut in his “Rules for Short Stories” got it right when he said, “Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — in order that the reader may see what they are made of.”
