Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In 1965, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced an unusual take on an espionage agency led by former WWII soldier Nick Fury. Named S.H.I.E.L.D. (Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division), the organization debuted as co-star of Strange Tales with Doctor Strange the Sorcerer Supreme. S.H.I.E.L.D. was made up of gun-toting daredevils willing to lay down their lives in defense of world peace. From jetpacks to flying roadsters and massive doomsday devices, S.H.I.E.L.D. fought the forces of Hydra on a monthly basis… until their dissolution last year. S.H.I.E.L.D. was often presented as having extensive intelligence resources in addition to cutting edge weapons design. As such, they were the presiding global police force as spectacular and stunning as the superhuman community… until their dissolution by Norman Osborn.

Rising bullpen writer Jonathan Hickman (of Secret Warriors fame) and Dustin Weaver, artist of X-Men: Legacy have recently announced a new monthly title focused on S.H.I.E.L.D. and its importance to the structure and development of the Marvel Universe. Hickman had already developed a name for himself in the independent comic book scene with the critically acclaimed Nightly News. A brilliant writer, Hickman is unique in the modern comic book scene as he has not only a seemingly limitless supply of ideas but also a magnificent grasp of character. His take on Marvel’s Fantastic Four has been gathering support as bringing the series to the level of greatness that it deserves. A third monthly from Hickman may be stretching the author a bit thin, but I have to confess after hearing his pitch that it sounds like a great comic.

For readers of Hickman’s Secret Warriors, the influence of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been hinted to stretch back to ancient history. The struggle for supremacy over the free world has been waged by Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. for generations on end, and now it will be revealed.

“We jump back through time and see the first alien invasion that happens on the planet. I’m not talking about the Celestials or any of that stuff. This is more along the lines of a straight up, ‘humans repel alien invaders’ event that happens. We see what gets born out of that, how it transforms society, and how that evolves through the history of man,” Hickman revealed. “We start our flashbacks in the third dynasty of ancient Egypt with a man called Imhotep. He’s considered the world’s first polymath, which is another word for what’s commonly referred to as a ‘Renaissance man’. We never state this in ‘Shield,’ but that kind of becomes the requirement for somebody to be part of the organization. That’s the type of men and women that the Shield is looking for. It’s only natural that Renaissance men big guns, like da Vinci and Galileo, feature and feature prominently”

“I would say our main cast is around eight to ten characters. Very early on, we’re introduced to Nathaniel Richards, the father of Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards, and Howard Stark, the father of Iron Man, Tony Stark. The young man I talked about above is named Leonid. He’s the Eternal Dynamo… the great engine of the human machine. He represents progress, the advance of society and all that other cool stuff,” Hickman said. “There’s also a guy called The Night Machine who is the opposite of Golden Age Renaissance heroes like da Vinci, Michaelangelo, and Galileo. We’ll see the dark dreams of Nostradamus and we’ll unflinchingly answer the long-standing question of whether Isaac Newton was the first man of the age of reason or the last of the magicians. And, hey, why be boring… let’s stick a Celestial, Galactus, and the Brood in the first issue and see what happens.”

“This series is operating on what is roughly a 7,000 year time line, and that’s exactly how I like things. In fact, this book is probably the perfect synthesis of all my indy and Marvel work to date. I think it’s easily the best thing I’ve ever done. It just feels right,” Hickman said. “Everyone at Marvel, and all my friends that have gotten early looks, really seem to dig the book. And honestly, even if you think I’m an idiot and can’t write worth a damn, you should check out this book just for Dustin Weaver. He makes murdering trees for print a holy and righteous thing.”

Shield premieres April 2010.

It had been a pretty long while since I started expecting the sequel to Marvel Ultimate Alliance (20

It had been a pretty long while since I started expecting the sequel to Marvel Ultimate Alliance (2006) sequel and finally, I have got it and finished the game twice. It is a bit odd, because I had really expected much more from this game and at the end, it kinda feels like a dissapointment. Because of my console, the version I will talk about is the Wii version of the game.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, previously known also as Fusion, basically follows the same path of the original game in terms of gameplay. Up to four players can join during anytime of the game, choosing 4 characters among 26 playable Marvel heroes and villains and overcoming each obstacle on their way. One of the new aspects of the game is the fact that now, thanks to the fusion power the characters are able to combine their powers, realeasing a powerful blast of mixed abilities. This new feature, apart from the story, are the only new attractions of the game, so we can say there’s a bit lack of originality.

The characters have improved in a lot of aspects, specially the visual one, but surely fans of the previous game will be struck by the fact of not having really new superpowers. Indeed, almost all the attacks of the first game have come back, with the exception of few that were changed, into something a little bit better, or something even worse. Teamwork is still the same, and the enemy’s level of intelligence becomesa challenge in some moments of the game, but there’s nothing really splendorous. Expectations about the new characters like Jean Grey, Penance, Psylocke, etc. fade quickly, as you realize some are the obvious replacement of the ones in the first game that didn’t enter in this second round (like Psylocke, who is basically Elektra). Some others continue being as good as they were, and pretty few have become really stronger.

The game’s plot follows the Civil War story, on which the heroes have to choose between accepting the Act of Registration from the Government, or not. Depending on what you choose, some characters will be available or not, and missions will change, according to the story you’re playing. Nevertheless, the way the plot is told becomes sometimes quite boring, and you just skip the info in order to start playing the missions. The S.H.I.E.L.D. blue points, where you save your progress and change your team are now spread in not very useful locations, unlike the previous game, and you can’t change characters who have died in battle anymore. You have to bring them back to life using the Fusion, and in the Wii version, there are no costumes for the characters.

Bosses have a balanced level, and the locations, although they are not as exotic as in the prequel, are now made with more detail, giving the game a pleasant visual effect. Missions have become shorter in lenght and not very dinamic in some moments. A good improvement from the first Wii version is that the Wii Remote Control is now more enjoyable without being an irritating feature. Attacks are not made by the control’s movement anymore, and isntead, it is required only in specific actions.

So, in general, MUA2 it’s the same game as the first one with some improvements but no really outstanding feature, a story that can be sometimes hateful, and cool characters that still, have something which doesn’t really fit at all. A good avergae game, but the first one is really missed by the player while he plays this one.

So, here’s a list of all the playable Wii characters, with a brief opinion of mine (based on my playing with them), and more images. Leave your comments as you wish!

1.- Captain America: He’s basically the same as in the first game, and his attacks are overpowered by most of all the other characters. A shield is not very useful, really… Grade: Useful in some moments.

2.- Iron Man: With some new improvements, Stark’s armor is not only a reliable backup, but also quite an offensive fighter. He’s not only powerful but also resistant. Grade: Essential for victory!

3.- Thor: The mighty Nordic God might not seem trustful in this game, but hides great power in his hammer. Strong and offensive, clearly a great choice. Grade: Good choice!

4.- Hulk: This new ally it’s powerful by nature. His only “but” is that he requires “rage” for some of his attacks, but it’s a good companion in rooms full of enemies… Grade: Good choice!

5.- Spiderman: The web-head neighbour it’s the master of agility, and along with his spider powers becomes a useful tool whether for running away, or fighting multiple enemies at a time… Grade: Essential for victory!

6.- Mr. Fantastic: Thanks to his elastic powers, he can reach enemies that are not close to him, but his physical power from the last game, went from 5 to 2 so think about it… Grade: Not the best, not the worst.

7.- Invisible Woman: Susan’s powers have increased from 5, to extra 5, becoming quite a good heroine to play with. Not only will she protect her mates using big shields, but also her “fusion” abilities end up with massive destruction! Grade: Essential for victory!

8.- Human Torch: Johnny’s fire power is strong, and used in a proper way, becomes destructive, besides, his combinations with the other heroes always result in total blast, surely, one hell of a flame! Grade: Good choice!

9.- The Thing: Ben’s physical power it’s the same, but unlike the first game, he’s a little bit faster. This allows him to act like a big bull enemies can’t run from!!! Grade: Good choice!

10.- Wolverine: The iconic X-Man, remains the same as in the prequel, but his lack of power is far more visible. It’s not a good idea to use metal claws against metal armors… Grade: Useful in some moments.

11.- Storm: Storm’s lightnings are a good weapon when a lot of enemies surround you, but… apart from that she has nothing really good to add, except (maybe…) her fusion compability… Grade: Useful in some moments.

12.- Cyclops: This new player seems to have a poor gameplay, but his optical powers ban that statement and make him a good mate rivals can’t deal with. Grade: Good choice!

13.- Jean Grey: She’s probably one of the best newcomers to the game. Not only can she revive with her powers, but also ask her Phoenix’s soul for help and play with telekinesis as if she were playing with dolls. Grade: Essential for victory!

14.- Iceman: Basically the same as always, Iceman icy powers are useful for freezing enemies once and for all, trapping them in what can become a massive punching bag. Fast, agile, and a good shooter… what else do you ask? Grade: Good choice!

15.- Gambit: Another newcomer who impresses with her explosive cards. His shooting ability is stunning, and more when his cards fly everywhere without even aiming at an enemy! Grade: Good choice!

16.- Psylocke: This lady’s pink powers are not very realiable and you’d prefer to take Jean instead of her. Her pink blade is probably a good weapon, along her butteflies, but she’s not the latest warrior… Grade: Useful in some moments.

17.- Deadpool: This mercenary is everything but rubbish. He shoots as fast as you blink your eyes, teleports, jumps, throws granades and starts the massive attacks as fast as he says: “Hello!” His resistance and health powers… make him the perfect back-up. Grade: Essential for victory.

18.- Daredevil: Not a very impressive character, Daredevil shows us agile movements and baton-based hits. Nothing really amazing. Grade: Not the best, not the worst.

19.- Songbird: Another newcomer who seems to offer a lot, but at the end is just another normal mutant. Her sonic powers are only impressive when the fusion is made. A bad point: she can’t attack while she flies… Grade: Not the best, not the worst.

20.- Blade: The old vampire hunter was weak and this new version of him… is still weak. Surrounded by all the other mutants, he barely even disappears among them. Some attacks have become stronger, and the gunshot is probbaly his best feature. Grade: Useful in some moments.

21.- Ms. Marvel: We still wonder why did she return. She’s not amazing and her attacks do a damage level of mediocrity. The only plus is that she’s strong, but in that case… better take Hulk or the Thing. Grade: Stay at the base.

22.- Penance: This mysterious guy doens’t seem to be strong or physically impressive, although visually, he is. Has energy attacks based in getting pain, but his really strong point is the “fusion” move, that ends up sometimes in total destruction. Grade: Not the best, not the worst.

23.- Luke Cage: This warrior is anything but spectacular. Maybe his fists against the ground are something but aparte from that… the chain, the punch… just don’t really work. Grade: Stay at the base.

24.- Venom: One of the two villains available, Venom it’s one of the best newcomers. His slow melee moves are compensed by really good attackas using his symbiotic abilites, which are able to drain enemy’s life in less that 1 minute! Grotesque, sometimes is the best… Grade: Essential for victory!

25.- Green Goblin: The explosive pumpkins he throws make up for his lack of physical damage. Basically that’s all he does… oh, did I mention he launches missiles? Grade: Not the best, not the worst.

26.- Nanyte Nick Fury: This android version of Nick Fury is strong, and has some good attacks… but he’s lack of visual compability with the rest of heroes, makes him a little odd. Apart from that… his sniper rifle deserves some views. Grade: Not the best, not thw worst.

We do feel sometimes the need of using Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider, Moonknight or Colossus right? Hahaha… among all the mentioned, who’s your favorite???

PD: Sorry for writing such a long entrance…

Chissenefrega?

By Jonathan Hickman (Writer), Alessandro Vitti (Artist), and Sunny Gho of IFS (Colors) Some Thoughts

By Jonathan Hickman (Writer), Alessandro Vitti (Artist), and Sunny Gho of IFS (Colors)

Some Thoughts Before The Review: While it’s slightly sidetracked the main Secret Warriors plot, I’ve been enjoying “God of Fear, God of War” quite a bit. The dynamic between Ares and Phobos has been so well written that both characters have climbed up a few spots on my list of favorite Marvel characters.

The Story: H.A.M.M.E.R. and the Dark Avengers launch a strike on one of Fury’s bases. The kids fight back with all they’ve got as the base’s self-destruction sequence counts down. Meanwhile, Nick Fury and John Garrett continue the investigation that leads to the events that take place in Dark Reign: The List – Secret Warriors.

What’s Good: For as much as I like Nick Fury and the way Jonathan Hickman writes the character, I’ve been waiting for kids to finally take front and center in Secret Warriors. In Secret Warriors #9, the kids finally get another chance to shine and that’s really the issue’s greatest strength. Fury wouldn’t have picked the team members if they weren’t capable to taking the fight to the bad guys, but until now, few issues of Secret Warriors have shown exactly why Fury chose the kids that he did. Seeing the Warriors stand tall against the Dark Avengers is a real treat that goes a long way towards establishing and legitimizing Hickman’s team in the Marvel Universe. From Yo-Yo’s epic return to Edin Fesi’s explanation of the logic behind his powers, it’s clear that, as far as bringing the pain is concerned, the Warriors have serious legs as a team for the future.

I continue to find myself impressed by Jonathan Hickman’s character work. He never allows the reader to forget that the Warriors are, for the most part, just kids helping to fight the good fight. From the way the team members interact with each other to the individual personalities that are starting to form, Hickman does a fine job of keeping the series grounded and defined by the characters.

Artist Alessandro Vitti handles all the action in Secret Warriors #9 really well. It’s chaotic and crazy, yet executed in a way that’s easy to follow and a blast to look at. On nearly every page of action something really cool happens. My favorite thing, Yo-Yo going all “Ed Norton in Fight Club” on Hawkeye/Bullseye.

What’s Not So Good: Since I already knew how Nick Fury’s part of the story ended thanks to Marvel’s odd releasing schedule for The List, his entire segment felt painfully tacked on. I suppose it was a necessary part of the story, but knowing how it ended left the scene completely devoid of surprise or tension. More Hickman-written Nick Fury is always a good thing, but I wish I had yet to read The List – Secret Warriors.

Conclusion: Secret Warriors #9 is loaded with action and makes the team really look like a force to be reckoned with. Be sure to pick it up.

Grade: B+

A settimana prossima, kids!

BONUS!

Eh, già… altro che Samuel L. Jackson…

I don’t know about you but I love fan films. I hate having to wait two or three years before being able to see the squeal. Some of these fan films I wish could and will be turned into movies. I’m sure if we promote one enough though someone will decide it’s just good enough to be produced.

So I would like to hold a World’s Greatest Fan Film Competition, I’ll go ahead and start it off with three of my personal favorites. I’ll add more as I come across the good ones. In the mean time why don’t you go ahead and use the comments section to tell us about some of your favorites. If their good enough I’ll add them to this post.

Jon Favreau spoke to MTV and confirmed that Incredible Hulk star Edward Norton won’t be appearing in Iron Man 2 and that Favreau won’t be directing The Avengers, the filmmaker shared some thoughts on his approach to making the Marvel movies all tie together.

“We want to reinforce a lot of the stuff we started to tip off,” Favreau told MTV News. “‘The Avengers’ is a much larger concern for Marvel and Kevin Feige, who runs Marvel. They’re going to be doing ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America,’ and the way we might start to tease those things in this movie, some of it is stuff that we’ve discussed [and] some of the stuff you do last-minute as you figure out how that stuff is coming together.”

“It’s an evolving, amorphous thing,” he explained. “If we decide and commit too early, the secret always gets out.”

Case in point: the post-credits cameo by Sam Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. chief Nick Fury at the end of “Iron Man.” Favreau and the studio went so far to keep the scene a secret that it was even left out of early screenings of the film for press. However, the secret still managed ot get out well before the film premiered.

“As soon as we shot the Nick Fury thing—we had a closed set and nobody was supposed to know about it—a week later somehow it was all over the internet,” said Favreau. “It’s a little bit of a cat-and-mouse game.”

As far as his more direct involvement in “The Avengers” goes, Favreau flat-out denied rumors that he’d direct the superhero team-up extravaganza.

“They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available,” he explained. “It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say.”

“It’s going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with ‘Avengers’ you’re going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor,” he continued. “How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it’s going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we’ve created.”

Favreau also confessed that his focus on a single member of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” might not be the best fit for the team-up film.

“That’s why it’s good that you have the guys from Marvel like Kevin Feige, who knows the books well and has been involved with the making of all the movies, and he’ll be very involved with ‘Thor’ and ‘Cap,’” said Favreau. “You need somebody who has the perspective of all the different franchises to bring them together. I have the myopic vision of just knowing and loving Iron Man.”

Let’s face it, Hollywood is never going to fund a big-budget original movie ever again. Search

Let’s face it, Hollywood is never going to fund a big-budget original movie ever again.

Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Marco and I have been talking for a while about doing a series of posts on movies that should be made. Now don’t get me wrong, the projects we’ll be proposing shouldn’t actually be made. In a better world, the budgets would go to real artists who do good work, but that’s not the world we live it, and at Counterforce, we believe in making the best out of a bad situation. Just like Liam Neeson.

no thank you

So, let’s get right down too it. You know, you know they’re going to make an ID4:2 some day, so we might as well make it enjoyably bad. Hell, just the idea of watching this movie instead of some Michael Bay cartoon-adapted crapfest gives me a boner. You can never ever go wrong blowing up as many international landmarks as possible.

Thus, The Counterforce Casting Couch: Independence Day 2

PREMISE:

This is gonna be a little rough, we can fill in the blanks during lighting shifts on the set. So, it’s like 20 years after the event of ID4. Will Smith is the President, obviously. The White House will have just finished being rebuilt and look exactly the same as before. Jeff Goldblum will basically be playing Al Gore. Sorta Green Living Apostle / Technocrat in Chief. Shia LeBeouf is Goldblum’s rebellious kid and Aaron Yoo is his buddy who films all their wacky adventures on his Flip Camera. There will be some drama because Shia doesn’t know his dad was a hero because Goldblum’s role was classified or something.

Ryan Kwanten from True Blood will fill in the Hick Character contingent with his little jailbait sister, Dakota Fanning. I threw a lot of brits into the cast so there can be other groups of characters in the UK and Australia, Iraq, etc. Famke Janssen will play somebody’s wife. Maybe Bill Pullman’s.

So, the Aliens come back, only this time, they come in peace and claim to be seeking asylum. Apparently these aliens are the not-evil faction of the bad guys. Will Smith will have all these mixed feelings because he hates aliens, but doesn’t want to be prejudiced to the nice ones. It will be like that scene in Star Trek 6 where Kirk talks about the klingons who killed his son, only this time it will be Will Smith saying it, and he’ll be talking to the First Dog.

Obviously, the bad aliens come back and destroy a shit-ton more monuments and landmarks. They’ll be led by Nic Cage, who is some kind of evil billionaire who helps the Aliens in exchange for world domination. Definitely gotta sack the Burj Dubai, the White House, Big Ben, the Golden Gate, the Vatican, etc. But this time, the good aliens have shared some of their technology, so the fight is slightly more fair, but earth still gets its ass kicked and the bad aliens occupy the planet. This would all take place on July 2nd.

yeah, that shit's gonna fall

The next day would be a lot of failed counter-offensives and characters hiding from Alien stormtroopers. Then Shia LeBeouf will decide to form a resistance and Aaron Yoo will do all the tech shit to get the word out on the internets. Ryan Kwanten will be there with Dakota, and he’ll turn out to be some kind of hillbilly ass-kicker. I see a scene with him, shirtless, feather tied to the back of his head, destroying enemy food supplies boston-tea-party style. Then we’ll cut to Said Taghmaoui in Iraq with a British accent and he’ll be all, “It’s the Americans, they want to organize a resistance, about bloody time!”

And then July 4th will be the big counter-attack. Aaron Yoo will die. Will Smith will fly an alien fighter ship with Bill Pullman as his wingman. They’ll fight their way to the mothership, land on it, then fight their way to Nic Cage’s lair on the bridge. Somehow, Jeff Goldblum will be there too. A big fistfight later, Will Smith wins, then escapes and Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum pilot the Mothership into the sun, sacrificing themselves. Shia hooks up with Dakota Fanning, and then after the credits roll, Samuel L. Jackson walks into a bar to talk to him about the Avengers initiative.

And… scene.

Fuck yeah!

You know you’d pay to see it.

By Jonathan Hickman (Writer), Ed McGuiness (Pencils), Tom Palmer (Inks), and Chris Sotomayor (Colors).

Some Thoughts Before The Review: I’m utterly confused by Marvel’s decision to release Dark Reign: The List – Secret Warriors before the Secret Warriors issue it’s supposed to take place after. I guess I can understand why Marvel would want to release one List book a week, but if there’s another in the pipeline for next week, why not just release that and hold off on the Secret Warriors one-shot until the monthly series is in synch with it? The mind…it boggles.

The Story: Nick Fury and Norman Osborn must put aside their differences for the greater good in order to bring down a federal employee that could cause trouble for them both…and the country.

What’s Good: The best thing about Dark Reign: The List – Secret Warriors is that it delivers all the excellent espionage action and awesome character work you’ve come to expect from the Jonathan Hickman series. Simply put, Hickman doesn’t skimp at all. From the introduction of the Leviathan organization and the dialogue between Osborn and Fury to the brutal interrogation of Seth Waters (the shady federal employee) and the use of Ares, Hickman’s script is top-notch. It successfully drives the Secret Warriors plot forward while functioning as an effective one-shot story at the same time. Now it doesn’t necessarily read like a true one and done (it definitely helps to have some familiarity with the Secret Warriors series), but it tells a satisfying Nick Fury story regardless. And, as you should know by now, nobody writes Nick Fury, or his stories, better than Jonathan Hickman at this point in time.

What’s Not So Good: Dark Reign: The List – Secret Warriors has two major problems that it never manages to completely overcome. The first problem is that the story, while entertaining and easy enough to follow, gets off on the wrong foot right from the start because it’s supposed to be telling about events that happen after a comic that has yet to come out. While reading the one-shot, the lingering feeling that I missed something never quite went away. Now I realize that I didn’t actually miss anything, but it’s frustrating to feel as though you missed a crucial event that set up whatever it is that you’re reading about.

The second problem is more of an issue than the first. I’m an Ed McGuiness fan, but the second problem with The List – Secret Warriors is that McGuiness’ art style just doesn’t fit the tone of the story Hickman tells. While Tom Palmer’s inks and Chris Sotomayor’s colors are moody enough, McGuiness’ exaggerated, slightly cartoony style just doesn’t feel right at any point. From the goofy, bug-eyed expressions of shock to the ‘roided up characters, the artwork just doesn’t work like it should. With all that said however, if you ignore the style, the artwork does a fine job of telling the story and executing the action of the script. So it’s not all bad.

Conclusion: Art and release schedule issues aside, Dark Reign: The List – Secret Warriors is worth checking out. Hickman’s script is very cool and the seeds planted for the future will be worth keeping an eye on.

What can I say, deadpool new series has been very funny since the beginning of secret invasion, but

What can I say, deadpool new series has been very funny since the beginning of secret invasion, but it stays strong now in dark reign. Last time we saw old Wade in San Francisco, trying to find his call in life, now that he’s decided to be an X-Man he only faces one problem, they don’t want him. First, Daniel Way makes a great characterization of deadpool, we see his crazy gun loving side, but also his strategic part. Also his representation of Cyclops and Wolverine is very in character, it’s an excellent issue.
Brian Bendis and David Lafuente reintroduction of Spiderman to the ultimate universe is going the right way. Bendis kick ass dialogue plus Lafuente’s art (Which isn’t one of my favorites) make the great gap between spiderman regular series to this new instalment. We see the reapareance of ultimate Mysterio (as seen in ultimate spiderman annual) and we uncover part of the story of how Pete broke up with MJ and ended up with Gwen “Carnage clone” Stacy.
Jonathan Hickman’s work with F4 has been pleasant, as now he has succeded Brian Bendis in Secret Warriors he still does a great job (although he commited some continuity mistakes). In dark reign the list secret warriors Nick Fury must help Norman Osborn in order to keep his country safe, revealing terrifying secrets about SHIELD, Hydra, AIM and more. I dislike Ed Macguiness art since his run in Hulk (too bulky and cartoonized). It is definitively worthwhile reading.
Ironman and the armor wars 3 is entertaining but not a must read, more like for kids .

by Andy Diggle (writer), Pop Mahn & Carlos Rodriguez (art), Frank Martin & Rain Beredo (colors), and Albert Deschesne (letters)

The Story: Black Widow and Songbird find themselves in a bad spot, as a divide begins to form between the Thunderbolts.

What’s Good: It’s really quite tragic that in Diggle’s final issue, the team finally feels fully established, with its members feeling legitimate and competent. Each character is fully defined, and I found myself caring about each and every one of them. The bad guys on the team felt like nasty, powerful adversaries, while I was firmly cheering for the good guys on the team. While Ghost has been awesome for some time, Headsman is now very lovable in his own right, Paladin gives off a twisted Scott Summers feel, Ant-Man is in intriguing character that’ll be trouble later on, and Mr. X is the evil, all-powerful badass that he should be.

All of this comes courtesy of the team breaking apart early on in the issue, which allows each character to shine in his own right. It fully manifests the sort of bizarre team dynamic that should define the Thunderbolts; Diggle spends much of the issue with half of the team acting like heroes, or at least anti-heroes, while the other half are flat-out villains. This is the sort of moral impasse that can make Thunderbolts such a fascinating comic, as while none of the characters are good guys, each represent a different sort of villainy.

Beyond that, the action has the fast, slick, and frenetic feel that you’d expect from Thunderbolts, with fancy explosions aplenty and a fun chase sequence. This is really dynamic, yet shadowy stuff with the great shading that has come to be a requirement in a Thunderbolts book.

What’s Not So Good: It’s hard not to feel a little frustrated as you realize that Diggle has left his book in a state where nothing has really changed. Through some rather convenient techno-wizardy, Ghost ensures that the team will have no memory of their infighting – meaning that the roster stays the same and the internal strife that made this issue so interesting is put back into the closet. Meanwhile, a “new” member introduced at issue’s end essentially undoes the biggest twist of Diggle’s entire run.

Diggle just feels overly concerned with making the series as accessible as possible for incoming writer Jeff Parker. It’s as though we’re back to issue 3 of Diggle’s run, with Parker merely inheriting Diggle’s original team, but almost none of the events that came after that roster selection.

The unmasking of Scourge was also underwhelming. It really is a C-list character, one I can imagine many people being totally unfamiliar with. Worse still, those who are familiar with the character probably saw this coming a mile away.

Also, perhaps due to having a larger art team, things can feel a bit scattered and a little too frantic, with a few too many angular panels, some faces looking off, and some panels being clearly done by a different hand.

Conclusion: A great issue that makes me feel that Diggle’s leaving too soon. It’s too bad that so much is undone.
