Let’s get one thing straight: Nickelback are bad. It doesn’t matter what tangible measures you use t

Let’s get one thing straight: Nickelback are bad. It doesn’t matter what tangible measures you use to gauge their talent, the end result is the same- unless, of course, you value commercial success above and beyond anything else. In which case, I’d like you to stop reading now (I’m joking- please read, I’m desperate for the attention!). On the other hand, AC/DC (it’s a shame we can’t replicate the lightning bolt in type form) are regarded as rock legends, instrumental in the mainstream recognition of heavy metal. They too have sold unbelievable amounts of music, yet retain their musical credibility for their originality.

But is there really such a gap between these two bands? Are Nickelback a modern incarnation of AC/DC; are AC/DC perhaps a devolutionary Nickleback? As a long-time Acca Dacca basher (since when was a nickname deemed worthy if it was longer than the original name?), I would argue that the bands are, in essence, one and the same. Here’s why.

The musical origins of both bands remain murky, mysteries wrapped inside enigmas (translation: I don’t know how they started, and frankly don’t care). But this I can be sure of: their names, whilst semi-memorable, were derived from some of the most anti-rock activities ever. The name AC/DC? Depending on which story you believe, they got it from either a vacuum cleaner or a sewing machine. To paraphrase Bob Dylan, how can the name of such a band be in the palm of some fool’s hand? What kind of extenuating circumstances causes the heaviest rock band ever (at the time) to feel that a brand name of a domestic appliance would accurately convey their MO?

Similarly, Nickelback supposedly got their name from a band member’s stint at Starbucks; when a customer paid for a coffee, he’d give them their change with “and here’s your nickel back!” I can’t say that I expected too much more from them, but once again, isn’t this a really, really dumb name? It’s memorable, I’ll give them that; though hepatitis-memorable isn’t the kind of memorable anyone wants (exception: Tommy Lee).

Another aspect of Nickelback that you probably didn’t know or care about is that they have a pair of brothers in the band: Chad and Mike Kroeger. And being a true blue Aussie (i.e. drinking an ice-cold stubbie as you simultaneously read this and check out your ute’s siiiiiick V8 engine), I’d assume that you knew about the Angus/ Malcolm Young parallel that exists in the AC/DC universe. So what, you say. Well, I know that including your younger brother in your jamming sessions is a sure-fire way to get in Mum’s good books, but doesn’t it stymie your musical potential as a band? I mean, all the greats- Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin etc- they mightn’t have got along famously on a personal level, but when it came to music, they were kindred spirits. Now how can that happen when two of your guys are continually trying to outdo each other and argue over who gets the top bunk? I don’t care what anyone says; brotherly competitiveness cannot be overcome, and thus is detrimental to a band’s progress.

An undeniable fact about Nickelback is that basically all of their music sounds the same. Now it’s granted that I’ve never actually listened to their entire discography, but the ones I’ve heard, the ones everyone’s heard, are effectively carbon copies in so many respects that it isn’t even funny. (Okay, maybe it is a little funny.) Each song starts off with some heavily distorted guitar playing a few basic chords, then follows the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge pattern, culminating with a rousing chorus taking the place of the proverbial icing on the cake. Only thing is, the icing’s made of shit.

But here’s the thing: AC/DC’s songs? They all pretty much follow the same format. A few months ago, when I actually had a job, I was regularly subjected to the horrors of commercial radio for 12 hours at a time. Generally, there would be a gross overabundance of mega-hits in their prime, mega-hits on the decline, and mega-hits from the 80’s and 70’s. (Actually, the songs from the 80’s weren’t mega-hits as much as they were just randomly selected songs to take the baby boomers back to a younger, skinnier version of themselves. And since every station is run by baby boomers, these songs were played basically non-stop.) Occasionally there would be a half-decent Pearl Jam or Bob Dylan track played, but that’s beside the point. I discovered during this time that AC/DC were played incessantly, as if there were some kind of local content rule which required at least ten of their songs be heard each day. So when they released a new album last year, the lead single was obviously played non-stop. But my first thought upon hearing it? “Wow, haven’t heard this one in a while!”

The point of this: their songs are horrifically repetitive.

So if Nickelback are essentially the evolutionary AC/DC, how did they come to be so maligned? If you say AC/DC were the innovators of hard rock, I can argue that Nickelback established kid-friendly rock (apologies to Matchbox Twenty). Sure, the latter mightn’t hold much esteem in the music canon, but surely Chad Kroeger and co. deserve some respect for squeezing every single inch of their musical talent and making high-selling, tremendously crappy records.

My theory is that because AC/DC made it big in America, we have placed them on a pedestal- a totally undeserved accolade seeing as Nickelback are Canadian, and their success in the USA is as unlikely as Mugabe and Tsvangirai having Christmas lunch together. Since America is a notoriously self-absorbed country on the whole, to break into its market either requires impressive musical talent, a stupid gimmick, or a combination of both. AC/DC fell into the third category- as well as being a great guitarist, Angus Young brought back the school uniform look, then kept on wearing it for the next 30 years, even though it was as out of fashion as Hammerpants (girls, they’re ridiculous!). They also benefited from the Kurt Cobain corollary- that when the frontman of the band dies, their musical output becomes ten times more appreciated- especially when the band releases their defining album just 5 months later. Actually, there is a strange phenomena relating to this within AC/DC; whenever you ask someone who the singer of AC/DC is/was, more often than not they’ll say Bon Scott. Um, I don’t mean to be insensitive, but he was only with the band for about 5 years, they hardly had any hits with him, and they only really took off when Brian Johnston took over on vocals; it really seems like an egregious overstatement to say Bon was ‘the heart and soul’ of a band that has continued to prosper well after he left them.

Back to the point. Since we fancy our country as a mini-America, AC/DC’s acceptance into their musical culture has massively inflated their importance, much like Jet when they inexplicably achieved the same. But Nickelback’s popularity has led to backlash and ridicule, highlighted by Chad Kroeger’s JFK-style assassination (no, this didn’t happen- just checking if you’re still reading). Regardless, as long as both bands continue to make music, I will continue to ignore commercial radio completely. And could someone please make Rob Thomas mute? Thankyou.

Nickelback – Never Gonna Be Alone Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Time, is going by, so much faster than I,
And I’m starting to regret not spending all of it with you.
Now I’m, wondering why, I’ve kept this bottled inside,
So I’m starting to regret not telling all of it to you.
So if I haven’t yet, I’ve gotta let you know…

[Chorus]
You never gonna be alone!
From this moment on, if you ever feel like letting go,
I won’t let you fall…
Your never gonna be alone!
I’ll hold you ’til the hurt is gone.

[Verse 2]
And now, as long as I can, I’m holding on with both hands,
‘Cause forever I believe that there’s nothing I could need but you,
So if I haven’t yet, I’ve gotta let you know…

[Chorus]
You never gonna be alone!
From this moment on, if you ever feel like letting go,
I won’t let you fall.
When all hope is gone, I know that you can carry on.
We’re gonna see the world on,
I’ll hold you ’til the hurt is gone.

[Verse 3]
Ooooh!
You’ve gotta live every single day,
Like it’s the only one, what if tomorrow never comes?
Don’t let it slip away,
Could be our only one, you know it’s only just begun.
Every single day,
Maybe our only one, what if tomorrow never comes?
Tomorrow never comes…

[Verse 4]
Time, is going by, so much faster than I,
And I’m starting to regret not telling all of this to you.

[Chorus]
You never gonna be alone!
From this moment on, if you ever feel like letting go,
I won’t let you fall.
When all hope is gone, I know that you can carry on.
We’re gonna see the world on,
I’ll hold you ’til the hurt is gone.

I’m gonna be there all along the way
I won’t be missing one more day
I’m gonna be there all along the way
I won’t be missing one more day

This album reminds us why we love Nickelback so much, easy to listen to however lyrically articulate

This album reminds us why we love Nickelback so much, easy to listen to however lyrically articulate. Nickelback are a band of contradictions – half the songs are about skanky ladies and their antics yet they also have rock ballards talking about their love for presumably the skanks. Musically they will never be RHCP or go in the league of the great guitarists however lyrically each song is themed, understandable and most have a hidden sub text that takes a few listens to understand.

My gripe with Nickelback is that they sound like Nickelback doing Nickelback, their sound has become embedded and they are lacking in adventurousness however that is exactly what makes this album so palatable at the first listen. It is like replacing your 20 year old favorite blanket with a new but nearly exact replica.

With age Nickelback have become amazingly good social commentators. Its true that they see life through Hollywood-tinted glasses but its clear that they see things as they are and in spite of sounding somewhat jaded and disenchanted they give a fair assessment of what we all know goes on and happens. Shakin’ Hands is a particularly great example of this and particularly touching is Never going to be alone.

Overall I give the Album 3.5 stars out of five and it is on my iPhone and driving playlists.

Check this out:

Variety is reporting that Universal Music Group, home to a massive roster of artists such as the Black Eyed Peas, U2, Weezer, Kanye West and Nickelback have apparently inked a deal with an Australian based company called Guvera to allow folks like you and I to legally download music for free from the artists signed to UMG’s stable of labels. And it’s a huge stable. UMG distributes Interscope, Island, and Motown to name just a few. The service will be advertiser supported, and it’s the advertisers who will be paying the labels, not you. The service is planning a February 2010 launch.

No word yet if the service will be limited to certain tracks by certain artists or the whole shebang, or more importantly, if the service will be available in Canada. Stay tuned. Literally.

Here’s the latest from Weezer. I like this one.

Good afternoon friends and followers. I have been bad about running and updating since I got back fr

Good afternoon friends and followers.

I have been bad about running and updating since I got back from San Diego. I think there’s one thing that those of you who are avid runners can agree with, and that is that running is not something you just pick up and do. You have to be committed to it. You need to run on a schedule and with a purpose.

For me, while the upcoming half-marathon on Thanksgiving Day is my short term goal, and better health is my long term goal, one of the things that drives me to get up and run every morning is the fact that i know that I am committed to bring daily updates to you.

Over the past two weeks, I’m not sure if it’s the chicken or the egg, but I stopped updating and I stopped running. Sure, I was still able to go out and run on Saturday in the Hog Jog, but I skipped my scheduled long run on Sunday.

Traveling is an excuse, and not a good one. but the more insipid excuse, and probably to more dangerously real one, is that I’m starting to feel confident that I can do this. Some of the longer runs in the past have been so scary to me, that I knew I had to do them just to take that next step toward the final goal of the half marathon.

Now, I feel relatively certain that I can finish the half-marathon without any major problems. I think that takes a little of the urgency off of my training runs. That complacency can be dangerous.

So this morning, I reminded myself that I needed to get back on the bike (metaphorically speaking) and keep my training going. To my surprise, this was a very good run. I finished in 28:56, which was just 10 seconds off my pace from the race on Saturday. That leaves me feeling a little better about my pace, and my ability to maintain a pace near 10-minute-miles for the half-marathon.

Thank you for your words of support. One week from right now I should be inhaling some turkey and mashed potatoes, knowing I’ve completed one of the biggest challenges of my life.

Day five — and the battle continues. Today the devil tempted me again, this time with meatlove

Day five — and the battle continues. Today the devil tempted me again, this time with meatlover pizza, KFC and a bacon & egg roll while walking the main street in Randwick. Yesterday (Wed 18/11) the devil came in the form of Kristy and tempted me with ham. On Tuesday the devil disguised himself as a dinner party hosted by Shell (talking about biofuels) on the 42nd floor of the Chifley tower — with oysters, salmon, shrimps & succulent steak. And on Monday (16/11) the my workmates were doing satan’s bidding by arranging a pub dinner, were I was surrounded by steaks & burgers.

I’m feeling weak; dizzy; disorientated. I’m having visions of bacon rashers, or fried chicken, floating in front of me. Kristy looks like a hamburger. I’ve taken to wandering the streets, unshaved and bedraggled, mumbling to myself. Or hiding in the corner of a room swaying back and forwards chanting “tofu, tofu, tofu”.

But the battle goes on. I started my “week without meat” on Sunday (15/11), along with a general detox that includes alcohol, cigarettes, illegal drugs, caffeine, taurine and junk food. I’d like some wine or a coffee… but it’s hard to get upset about missing those things when I’m being deprived of meat. Now I know how Gandhi felt when he fasted for three weeks.

Two days to go. By then either I will have triumphed against temptation, or gone mad trying. And just to make the exercise a bit more difficult, on the last day of “vegetarian John” I’ll be going to a beer & BBQ day at Parnell’s house as she tries to sell the books in her late father’s library. If I can make it through that day, then I have nothing to fear from US water-boarding.

One strange thing I discovered is how many people have had a “vegetarian” moment in their life. Terje tried it out for six years, Jess for 10 years, and Oliver for 12 years. All have since recovered. And now I too will have my vegetarian war-story… my one week in the trenches.

Kristy and I had been talking about doing a detox for a while… but it had to wait until after last weekend. Super-Joe came down from Brisvegas for the weekend and we had a massive Friday night (Friday the 13th) at the Nickelback concert followed by another big night at a friend’s housewarming.

The Nickelback night was a lot of fun. Joe had two tickets from his work in a corporate box, where we were served only the best food & drinks all night. Suffice to say, we had a “binge“. Sorry Kev. Strangely, another guest in the corporate box came up to me and asked me “are you Karen Gullo’s brother”? Well, yes. “Yeah, I thought I recognised you… you came to our house party seven years ago at the Sunshine Coast”. WTF? Clearly, some people have a much better memory that me.

It turns out it was some of Karen’s church friends, and I made an impression that night because I had just been caught DUI. My blood alcohol was 0.06, which is legal in most countries… but let’s not get side-tracked in the story here. We discussed religion; Joe pretended he was a member of Opus Dei, and we said we’d try to get to church that Sunday morning.

The plan was this: we spend Saturday recovering, then go to Alan’s housewarming party and have another “binge”, and if we were still awake in the morning then we go to church instead of sleep. The recover, party (excellent), binge, stay awake part all went according to plan… but at 8am we checked the address of the church and found out it was up in Manly. Bah. Maybe it would have been possible if we had some cocaine or ecstasy… but in our drunk/stoned haze we decided to sleep.

So that was the pre-detox weekend… and a nice contrast to the last five days of purity. And now here I sit on Thursday night, having just had a salad sandwich & pasta salad for dinner, and feeling strangely morally superior. Hannah said this would happen. Of course, not as morally superior as Ben & his vegan friends who scoff at us milk-drinking and cheese-eating animal abusers, but morally superior nonetheless. I can’t believe you people kill animals just so that you can eat their flesh. You bastards. For two more days I will look down my nose at you… and then on Sunday I’m going to eat burned pig flesh.

So, in our last blog regarding deathcore, you may recall that I openly referred to it as the most artistically bankrupt form of music currently in existence. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that was due to the breakdowns. And while I still feel that breakdowns are terrible, I believe that to be a blatant over-simplification. Though breakdowns may inspire retarded shit like this…

…they aren’t the only problem deathcore faces (though they are the most irritating.)

Above all else, breakdowns represent the rampant homogenization of creativity within the metal community. While I might have a modicum of respect for the fact that someone is in a bro-core band and and playing shows in places other than mom’s basement, it’s hard to really take it seriously when it’s uninspired trash. Whatever effectiveness a breakdown might have had when it was originally created is moot now. It now stands as a proud flag of mediocrity, waving proudly to audiences worldwide.

“But good sir,” you may protest in a phony British accent, “why must you devote so much time to something you hate? Would you not be better off ignoring such foul noise?” Rightly so, if not for the fact that such mediocrity has risen to prominence and been given legitimacy by those in the “metal press”. Plus, it gives me something to write about.

It would be rather easy to blame the music industry for forcing this shit upon a hapless public. But it would be even easier to blame people like you for buying into this trash. To an A&R rep, every breakdown might as well be the chime of a cash register for all the money people keep throwing at these shitty bands.

Who are these people? Much like the nebulous “Nickelback fan”, I’ve never met a single person who will admit paying good money for a Suicide Silence album. But believe me, they’re out there. Leaving comments on youtube videos and going to Dude Fest (oh wait, there really is a Dude Fest?)

Breakdowns are the NASCAR of metal, appealing to shitheads who don’t know any better. Much like the way NASCAR emulates real sport, breakdowns would also appear to reflect the qualities of anything musical, yet offering little more than a percussive jud jud, (save for The Meshuggah Exception.) Though, the simple thud likely speaks to something primal within, explaining why those with damaged chromosomes would latch on so fiercely.

Rock music is a different beast then it was in 1999. Thank god. Nu-metal is a bad dream I’d like to forget. But out of all that shit some good things did come. Mainly, the incredible crop of bands that took rock music to either: it’s classic roots, new sonic heights, or found a sound and perfected it. So I give you the Top 3 Most Influential Bands of the 2000’s

Number 1. Coldplay

No one could foresee the success that these 4 British boys would have when they released their first single in 2000. After Yellow exploded many bands hopped onto their sound. Not that Coldplay were impressively original, but Jeff Buckley died too soon and Radiohead didn’t care about being the biggest band in the world. But Coldplay did, and so they created a sound that was just as big. Coldplay’s soaring guitars with Chris Martin’s piano and honest lyrics made for an equation that millions of people loved. To this day their are still bands making music that sounds like A Rush Of Blood To The Head and Parachutes. Luckily Colplay have moved on and are still influencing songwriters with their self described “very heavy soft rock.”

Number 2. The Strokes

We’ll be writing more about The Strokes in the next few weeks, but I think the influence of The Strokes cannot be over stated. Well maybe the NME would overstate it, but like The Velvet Underground, and The Ramones, The Strokes gave us a new hope for rock and roll. All of a sudden we remembered that you don’t have to be a douche bag to make rebellious rock and roll. The greatest compliment that can be paid to The Strokes is that after people heard Is this it they started bands.

Number 3. Nickelback

I found a Guitar World magazine from 2001. In it Chad Kroeger talks about Silver Side Up, the album that not only would make Nickelback a household name, but create a standard for the modern rock radio song. The success of This is how you remind me was so effffing epic that nearly ten years later there is little on modern rock radio that doesn’t follow or pay homage to Nickelback and their sound. My local rock radio station jerks off Kroeger and Co. so often that my friends and I have stopped playing the Nickelback drinking game because we can’t be tanked at 10am. But why do we drink? Because Kroeger writes a hell of a hook, and he knows it. In Guitar World Kroeger says: “We are all about the music. There’s not one tattoo or piercing on any member… we’re not trying to fool anybody … we’re a rock band that tries to write really contagious melodies that are going to weld themselves into your subconscious.” Once again it’s all about the songwriting.

Also worth noting are the honorable mentions:

Radiohead: Too omnipresent

The White Stripes: Too Jack White-y

Arcade Fire: Too pretentious

Wilco: Too country

Linkin Park: Nope

Never Gonna Be Alone – Nickelback

Music & Lyrics: Chad Kroeger, Nickelback and Robert John “Mutt” Lange

Time, is going by, so much faster than I
And I’m starting to regret not spending all of here with you
Now I’m wondering why I’ve kept this bottled inside
So I’m starting to regret not selling all of it to you
So if I haven’t yet, I’ve gotta let you know

You’re never gonna be alone from this moment on
If you ever feel like letting go, I won’t let you fall
You’re never gonna be alone, I’ll hold you ’til the hurt is gone

And now, as long as I can, I’m holding on with both hands
‘Cause forever I believe
That there’s nothing I could need but you
So if I haven’t yet, I’ve gotta let you know

You’re never gonna be alone from this moment on
If you ever feel like letting go, I won’t let you fall
When all hope is gone, I know that you can carry on
We’re gonna see the world out, I’ll hold you ’til the hurt is gone

Oh, you’ve gotta live every single day
Like it’s the only one, what if tomorrow never comes?
Don’t let it slip away, could be our only one
You know it’s only just begun, every single day
Maybe our only one, what if tomorrow never comes?
Tomorrow never comes

Time is going by so much faster than I
And I’m starting to regret not telling all of this to you

You’re never gonna be alone from this moment on
If you ever feel like letting go, I won’t let you fall
When all hope is gone, I know that you can carry on
We’re gonna see the world out, I’ll hold you ’til the hurt is gone

I’m gonna be there always
I won’t be missing a word all day
I’m gonna be there always
I won’t be missing a word all day

De música no entiendo mucho, por no decir nada. Me gusta escuchar música, escucho mucha música. Hast

De música no entiendo mucho, por no decir nada. Me gusta escuchar música, escucho mucha música. Hasta ahí.

Guitarras facilonas.

Nickelback

3 Doors Down

Seether

Un par de vídeos

Me ha costado decidirme… aquí queda “Kryptonite” de 3 Doors Down

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q233CxlIZtk

Y ya que “ha salido” el tema, cover de “No quarter” (Led Zeppelin) by Tool (una obra de arte)

The other day I was browsing apps for my iPhone and came across the CBS radio app, which I was stoke

The other day I was browsing apps for my iPhone and came across the CBS radio app, which I was stoked on because now I can listen to some of my favorite out of market stations on my phone whenever I have wifi in my life. I think this is fantastic and I’ve got a couple of radio apps on my phone for this, because I can take it into the bathroom or bedroom to listen to while I get ready to go somewhere.

So I downloaded the app and popped open the menu and wow, was I shocked at seeing this:

did you throw up in your mouth too?

WHO THE FUCK WANTS AN ALL NICKELBACK STATION? I mean is this seriously something people wanted and demanded? And do these people hate themselves? And is there actually ENOUGH Nickelback to fill an entire channel on AOL radio? WHAT THE FUCK?

Needless to say I scrolled by that shit with the quickness. All Nickelback… barf.
