Chinese Golf Resorts, Nearly Nonexistent 10 Years Ago, Are Sprouting Up Throughout The Country

Mission Hills looks to become one of the world's top golf destinations

In China, the relatively new sport of golf has become the game of choice for businesspeople and sports aficionados across the country. While golf has long enjoyed strong popularity in neighboring Japan and Korea, where it has long been the leisure activity of the elite, golf has only made inroads in China since the late 1990s. Now, however, golf is booming in China, and the country boasts over 200 courses. Of these, several world-class courses have increasingly attracted enthusiasts from around the world — and the PGA — and none of these courses represents the quality of Chinese golf resorts more than Mission Hills Golf Club in Guangdong Province.

Straddling nearly 17 acres of land near Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Dongguan, Mission Hills is reportedly the world’s largest putting course — with 12 disparate courses and 216 holes — and was designed by American golf course design outfit Schmidt-Curley Design, who has remarked, “There is nothing on the planet that comes close to the course’s size, appearance or playing alternatives…The possibilities are limitless.” But as golf grows in popularity throughout the Mainland, and as more courses spring up to meet the demand of China’s maturing middle class, what will, in the end, set courses like Mission Hills apart from its hundreds of competitors. According to The Examiner, it’s all about the course’s staggering scale and unique localization and personalization efforts:

Big, candidly, is an understatement at Mission Hills Golf Club, which features the world’s largest collection of premier golf courses with 12 layouts designed by many of the greatest golfers and golf course architects from five continents. The facility is also hosting the sixth annual Golfathon, May 1 – August 31, 2009. Open to players of all ages and abilities, contestants will challenge 10 of the club’s 12 golf courses. The Overall Champion will earn an exemption to October’s inaugural Asian Amateur Championship on Mission Hills’ World Cup Course. The AAC winner will be awarded a spot in the 2010 Masters Tournament, arguably the sport’s most-revered championship.

“The Mission Hills Golfathon combines the thrill of golf and marathon into a formula that attracts golf enthusiasts from around the world to our club for the ultimate golf challenge,” said Chu, Mission Hills Golf Club Executive Director. “This year’s exemption to the Asian Amateur Championship is an exceptional first prize. For those who are simply content participating in the event,anyone who can complete nine qualifying rounds of golf within five consecutive weekdays will receive an “Iron Man” certificate and complimentary weekday green fee valued at 1,380 RMB ($200). “We will pamper Golfathon competitors with our renowned, gold-standard personal service,” said Chu. “Come share an unforgettable experience with family, friends and fellow golfers, as no other resort in the world can match Mission Hills’ vast array of activities and first-class amenities.”

For the avid, rabid golf junkie this is a must to add to their resume. Today, Hartmarx Corporation and 51 affiliates filed voluntary chapter 11 bankruptcy petitions in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  The companies are headquartered in Chicago and are represented by Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

According to a press release issued by the company, Hartmarx manufactures and markets apparel under its own brands, including Hart Schaffner Marx, Hickey-Freeman, Palm Beach, Coppley, Monarchy, Manchester Escapes, Society Brand, Racquet Club, Naturalife, Pusser’s of the West Indies, Brannoch, Sansabelt, Exclusively Misook, Barrie Pace, Eye, Christopher Blue, Worn, One Girl Who . . . and b.chyll. Hartmarx also has licensing rights to market apparel and other products under a number of other brands such as Austin Reed, Burberry (men’s tailored clothing), Ted Baker, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Claiborne, Pierre Cardin, Lyle & Scott, Golden Bear, Jag and Dr. Martens.

With respect to the reasons that a bankruptcy filing was necessary, Hartmarx stated the following: “[t]he filing is principally the result of the substantial decline in discretionary apparel purchases by consumers and by the Company’s retail customers, particularly at the luxury price points, coupled with the significant contraction in borrowing capacity under the Company’s senior credit facility.”  As for Hartmarx’s prospects for reorganization, the company further stated the following: “[t]he Company intends to continue operating its business in the normal course as management focuses on developing and executing a restructuring plan, which may include the sale of substantially all of its assets.”

In order to finance its operations during the chapter 11 cases, Hartmarx has obtained up to $160 million of pre-petition commitments as a debtor-in-possession (DIP) credit facility from its pre-bankruptcy lenders.

Well, I did get a chance to play a great course in the Yuchitan, Mexico. Only had “Montezuma’s Revenge” once, the Mayan ruins are unbelievable, & Cozumel is a world class scuba & diving destination. FELICES NAVIDADES & FELIZ ANO NUEVO.

COZUMEL COUNTRY CLUB, Cozumel, Mexico: It’s close to your vacation home in Cancun & the picturesque Mayan ruin Tulum is also not far away. This course is a Jack Nicklaus design cut out of the sub-tropic jungle. Hit the ball straight on this layout or feed it to the fauna. I didn’t see any gators but I could feel them waiting for me to look for an errant shot. I didn’t look for any balls! It’s a special course, very scenic and very difficult. RATINGS: 72.2/133 COST: $105 (after 1:30 PM)-$169 including cart.

For contributions that result in another billboard on I-35.  Although, if something is going to compete with the view, I think this one actually helps.  That’s Marc DeWall there, my model, standing on the third tee at Cordillera Ranch.  (I posted about this earlier, and I’m glad this one made it all the way through.)  I shot this one under the direction of Trish McCabe-Rawls of Creative Noggin, for San Antonio-based KGB Texas.

A few thoughts on this:  The agency wanted to show “the uniqueness of the golf course” on a billboard.  They wanted to include a person, too.  Tall order, for sure.  A billboard has a very short amount of time to get its message across.  Mere glances by distracted drivers busy saving their own lives. Very few have the ability to arrest the viewer, and even fewer contribute to hard cash changing hands.  I suppose they have their place in the smelly darkness of “branding,” but I’m not an ad guy.  I simply don’t know.

The uniqueness of the golf course at Cordillera Ranch rests firmly in three places:  terrain, turf quality and condition. TERRAIN: It’s in the Hill Country, but there are no screwy lies and cliffs and other undesirable qualities of Hill Country golf.  TURF QUALITY:  Bossman David Hill and his team researched grasses and picked out the best for playability and aesthetics.  CONDITION:  There is no better in Texas. Some may be as good, but not one is better.

So back to the assignment.  Marc is a very nice looking guy, he looks like a golfer (because he is one…a damn good one).  The third hole shows the terrain, the turf quality and the condition.  All of it is real.  That is not a composited photo.

Looking back on this, I think we knocked it out of the park.  But again, I’m not an ad guy.

THE BEAR, Acme, Michigan: A Jack Nicklaus beauty that the man was proud enough of to bestow his nickname on. With only a 5 month season, northern Michigan’s courses are in the best shape in the country due to lack of play. Rated among the 20 toughest courses in the United States (public or private) by Golf Digest. Everyman won’t break 100 but will enjoy every minute of the suffering. Photograph the moguls on #16 but don’t hit into them or you will procure a crooked lie. COURSE RATINGS: 76.3/148 COST: $80 (off-season)-$140 including cart

Today Auntie sent me a picture of the granite headstone she had made for Nick. The plan is to place it at his beloved lake. Mom says there are other memorial stones there but I guess I never noticed them. Auntie had called me a couple of days ago asking what I wanted on it. I had the thought from the time she first mentioned having it done of how nice it might be to have Nick’s picture on it. I never really thought about any words I would have put on it. She chose to have the saying…When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. This suits the purpose of this memorial to a tee. That and the fact that we are setting it in cement at the lake. The lake has become very special to us all over the past few years for many reasons but we all remember it was the last time many of us spent time with Nick. Our family continues to vacation there every year in the same weekend (last weekend of July) Last year was the first year knowing Nick would never again gather with us there but his memory very much alive and present. It was sad and wonderous at the same time. More family members come every year. This year there will be more than ever. I love auntie dearly. She is so thoughtful. I know in a way this is her way of holding on to Nick and telling him goodbye but remaining with her forever in some physical way. The granite looks breathtaking in the picture and I can only imagine that the picture doesn’t do it justice. I am attaching the picture she sent me. I, again, have edited the last name but any visitors will get the jist. The picture that my mom chose to have etched into it is of Nicklaus comming out of the lake after going off the rope swing. He was fearless when it came to that rope swing always climbing to the highest branch and pushing off swinging out to the very limit of the rope and letting go only at the last minute. He was amazing to watch.        

Cuando en 1986 el Masters de Augusta echó a rodar, Jack Nicklaus no estaba entre los favoritos. A pesar de ser el golfista más laureado de todos los tiempos, había llovido mucho desde que en 1980 se alzara con el título del PGA, por entonces su entorchado número 17 en ‘Majors’.

Con 46 años, el Oso Dorado -su apodo en el circuito, debido a su complexión fuerte y su cabello rubio-, había dejado paso a una nueva generación de golfistas encabezada por Severiano Ballesteros y Greg Norman, por lo que nadie contaba con Nicklaus en el Masters de aquel año.

Al término de la primera vuelta, Ballesteros, ganador del Masters en 1981 y 1983, tiene dos golpes de ventaja sobre Tom Kite, Greg Norman y Nick Price, todos ellos con -5. A falta de 9 hoyos, Nicklaus está a 4 golpes de la cabeza con -3. Sus opciones de victoria son reales, aunque pocos creen que aguante el tirón final.

Sorpresivamente, los hoyos van pasando y Nicklaus afila las garras. -4 en el 13, -6 en el 14. La gente comenzó a gritar ¡’Jack is back’, Jack is back’!. El Oso se crece ante la manada de jóvenes lobos que le acosan. Afila las garras. Tiene su decimoctavo ‘Major’ en el punto de mira.

Un espectacular ‘eagle’ en el 15 y un error de Ballesteros, que manda la bola al lago, colocan a Nicklaus en el liderato por primera vez en todo el fin de semana, aunque empatado a golpes con el español. Con la edad quizás le falte músculo, pero al Oso le sigue sobrando cabeza. Un par de ‘birdies’ en los dos siguientes le darán el liderato en solitario, y en el último, Nicklaus sólo tiene que embocar para alzarse con el título después de una increíble remontada. El Oso volvía a rugir.

Una hazaña. Thomas Boswell, del Washington Post, comenzó de esta manera su crónica del día siguiente:

“Algunas cosas no pueden pasar porque además de improbables también son imperfectas. El equipo de hockey sobre hielo de USA no pudo derrotar a los rusos en los Juegos de Moscú. Jack Nicklaus no puede hacer 65 golpes para ganar el Masters con 46 años. A nadie le viene eso a la mente”.

El campo de Polaris World La Torre Best Golf será el escenario donde se celebrará, el sábado 26 de abril, el Trofeo Rolex de Golf, que este año cumple su tercera edición.

Más de 120 jugadores han confirmado su asistencia a este torneo anual, uno de los campeonatos que más expectación levanta dentro del calendario de golf. El reglamento del Trofeo Rolex de Golf 2008 establece dos categorías, una masculina limitada a handicap de juego 18 y otra femenina limitada a 24. La modalidad de juego ha quedado establecida en individual, a una vuelta estipulada de 18 hoyos stroke play.

En Murcia, el torneo se organiza conjuntamente con Pedro Luis Olivares Joyeros, propietario del concesionario exclusivo para Rolex en la Región, quien será el encargado de hacer entrega de los trofeos a los mejores clasificados.

It’s a silly debate, really, but here’s one argument in favor of Jack being better than Tiger, no matter how Tiger finishes his career.  Tiger’s birdie on the 72nd hole to win yesterday made me realize this.

I don’t care who you are, all seems right when Tiger wins.  He’s supposed to.  Everyone wants him to.  Everyone except the other guys in contention.  He has massive fan support.  Even people who don’t like him want him to win.  Jack Nicklaus, on the other hand, came along at a time when Arnold Palmer was the Tiger Woods of his day.  Jack won all those tournaments when everyone was pulling against him.  Arnold was supposed to win all those, and he probably would’ve if Jack hadn’t come along.  Johnny Miller certainly would’ve won a lot more tournaments in a Jack-less era.  Lots of other players would’ve.

Some knucklehead (Arron Oberholser, maybe?) was interviewed in one of the golf rags out right now, and he said Tiger is better than Jack because “today’s fields are deeper” and “anyone in the field can win any week” or something idiotic like that.   News flash, phucko: anyone in any field in any era can win.  You all start at even par.  Beyond that, and beyond Jack winning when no one wanted him to, everyone should respect what those who came before us did to make golf what it is today.

And if time travel were possible, there’s no telling what I’d pay to be inside the ropes as Tiger and Jack stepped onto the first tee of Augusta National on a warm Sunday in April.
